Who needs One Hand Piano Pieces? • Piano teachers with the inevitable pupil with an injured wrist/arm/shoulder... • Pianists who want to develop their weaker hand • Music-lovers of all ages who, through physical constraint, are temporarily or permanently forced to play with only one hand • Anyone looking for a very original way of showing their ability in competitions or recitals! ONE HAND PIANO comprises 40 very easy to quite tricky pieces, including new original pieces as well as arrangements from the Renaissance to the Comedian Harmonists.
“How many times have we searched for appropriate music for injured students – in vain. We heartily welcome ONE HAND PIANO. This collection will keep motivation high.” (Linda and Douglas Bischoff, NY, Piano Teachers)

Preface All piano teachers have been confronted with this situation: A pupil sprains his wrist, breaks his arm – four, six, even eight long weeks he won’t be able to play a note. The piano lessons must go on – but how? What can one do with just one hand?
of which is now presented in this edition. I hope you will enjoy One Hand Piano!
Notes on this Edition Of course there is Brahms’ arrangement of Bach’s Chaconne, as well as all the pieces written by Ravel, Britten, Hindemith and others for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. But these are so overwhelmingly difficult, that only a very few professionals would dare to attempt them. And they are all exclusively for the left hand – not very helpful if you can only use your right hand! Are there really no playable pieces for one hand? I searched and found that they are about as rare as blue Steinways! But through the internet, I discovered that there is a surprisingly large number of people who would gladly play one-handed pieces if any existed. These are not just children with a broken arm, they are music-lovers of all ages who have had a stroke or other injury, temporarily or permanently forcing them to play with one hand only. In addition, one-handed pieces are a valuable bonus for the daily practise of all pianists. Playing them can be an excellent way of strengthening one’s weaker hand. They are also an unusual but very distinguished way of showing one’s ability in competitions and recitals! I saw this as a challenge and started composing truly playable pieces for one hand. Soon, I found that experimenting within the limitations of what one hand can play was a great stimulus to writing which I enjoyed immensely. Thus in the last few years a collection of one-hand pieces was formed, a selection
This collection comprises a selection of pieces as stylistically varied as possible. Hence the inclusion, not only of my own compositions, but also of arrangements of some familiar and not-so-familiar classic, folk and film music. There are also several songs, but in only one (Cowboy Duck) is singing actually required. For this song, and a few others, where the pianist might enjoy singing along, the first verse of the lyrics has been included. Most pieces are playable by either hand (R/L); when this is not the case, only R or L indicates for which hand the piece was written. The fingerings are merely suggestions. The upper numerals represent fingerings for the right hand, the lower, italicized numerals are for the left hand. When the piece is specifically only for the left or right, all fingerings are upright and positioned normally. As is common in keyboard music, there are a number of long notes which are actually impossible to hold for their full written value. Remembering the words of Daniel Barenboim that the art of the piano is the art of illusion, the notes can be “heard” as though they were held their full length – with a little imagination – and the help of the sustaining pedal!

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules, Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these. But of all the world’s great heroes, there’s none that can compare With a tow, row, row, row, row, row to the British Grenadiers.
Sample page
Yankee Doodle went to town, A-riding on a pony; He stuck a feather in his hat, And called it macaroni.
Refrain: Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step And with the girls be handy.

This is actually a German folk-song Alle meine Entchen that absolutely every German child knows – but not a single Cowboy – except maybe one who has been reading Karl May’s works – stories of Wild West in which the Good Guy always happens to be a German!!

25 Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme; * Remember me to one who lives there, For once she was a true love of mine.
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are symbols for gentleness, spiritual strength, loyalty and courage.
