VISION
A community filled with mutual respect and understanding that resonates with Jewish values. Photo: Mechanical blue horse used for promotions, Montag Bros. Co., c.1960. The company was founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1889 by Sigmund Montag and his four brothers.
Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners, We are pleased to report that we had an incredible year of resilience, re-imagination and renewal that extended our impact around the globe. We did not have the number of in-person visitors as in previous years due to being closed to the public when our fiscal year began in July 2020. However, thanks to innovative virtual programs and collaborations with diverse community partners, we extended our reach in other ways. As the year progressed, we saw ways to open our doors safely and in April 2021 we resumed in-person visitors on a limited basis. We look forward to the day when we can welcome you back without restrictions and we see the future of our organization as a happy marriage between our wide array of virtual options with the vital experience of providing a dynamic on-site experience. In 2021, we reached a major milestone—The Breman’s 25th anniversary. Although we were not able to hold some of our planned anniversary events, they are not canceled, merely postponed. Soon we will celebrate with you, in the manner that such an occasion deserves! In conjunction with the anniversary, our founding executive director, Jane Leavey, and founding archivist, Sandra Berman, put together the wonderful exhibition, “History with Chutzpah: Remarkable Stories of the Southern
Jewish Adventure 1733 – Present.” The exhibition, which opened in September 2021, tells the stories of the many people – past and present – whose experiences, achievements and perspectives are reflected in The Breman’s expansive archival collections through more than 250 objects, documents, photographs and oral histories. During this past year, we continued to be exceedingly grateful to our members who joined or renewed their memberships, even when physical access was limited. We also give our thanks to our many donors, community partners, and visitors (inperson and virtual) who have helped to preserve, share, and enjoy Jewish history, art, and culture. The Breman remains firmly rooted in the community—poised and positioned to advance its mission of connecting people to Jewish history, culture and the arts. We’re proud to showcase what we are today, and prouder still to build an institution with continued relevance and dynamism as we leap into the next 25 years and beyond.

2021 marks the 25th Anniversary of The William Breman Jewish History Museum. Since its founding in 1996, The Breman Museum has become a leader in Holocaust education, a trusted steward of archival materials related to Southern Jewish history, and a cultural center presenting programs that educate and entertain audiences of all backgrounds. With a theme of CHUTZPAH, we are honoring those who have contributed to the rich legacy that serves as the foundation of Jewish life in Atlanta today. We are deeply indebted to the countless individuals who have supported The Breman over the years.
Philanthropists Walter (z”l) and Frances (z”l) Bunzl were active supporters of Atlanta’s art and culture scene and a broad range of organizations that help others. Photo: Frances BunzI, 2005, Esther and Herbert Taylor Oral History Collection
Thanks to the generosity of the Frances Bunzl Family Trust, the new Walter and Frances Bunzl Family Foundation Exhibition Fund will allow The Breman to broaden its impact and develop engaging, interactive, and pioneering exhibitions for many years to come.

PRESERVING JEWISH HISTORY
This year, the Molly Blank Concert Series was rebranded with new and expanded cultural programs as the Molly Blank Cultural Series. In addition to presenting concerts, the series will diversify its offerings to include author talks, Jewish history, music, comedy and more. While most events in FY21 were presented virtually, plans are in the works to expand performances, exhibitions, and more to additional venues throughout Metro Atlanta when it is safe to do so.
As Atlanta’s only Holocaust survivor speaker series that is open free to the public, Bearing Witness provides first-person accounts that are critical to understanding history and ensuring that we learn from the lessons of the past. Hershel Greenblat, George Rishfeld, and Manuela Mendels Bornstein told their unforgettable stories of Holocaust survival that reached more than 4,500 people through livestreamed presentations and on-demand video.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we were challenged to find new ways to tell the story of Jewish history in the South. A new virtual program titled the Southern Jewish History Speaker Series was an immediate success and featured scholars, authors and more. The online speaker series has averaged 100+ live participants per event and is seen by hundreds more on demand on The Breman’s YouTube channel.

LILLIAN AND A.J. WEINBERG CENTER FOR HOLOCAUST EDUCATION The Weinberg Center produces educational programming for diverse audiences including the popular Bearing Witness conversations with Holocaust survivors. In addition to serving students (grades 5-12) through tours and innovative programs, the center offers resources for educators that empowers them to effectively teach the Holocaust.
This year marked the 56th Annual Community-wide Yom HaShoah Commemoration on April 11, 2021 which was attended by more than 1,000 people. The Atlanta and greater online communities were invited to this special virtual event which included the story of the Memorial to the Six Million at Greenwood Cemetery and a special in-home candle lighting ceremony spotlighting local Holocaust survivors. The event was jointly sponsored by Eternal-Life Hemshech, The Breman Museum, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta.
Online Resources for Educators and Students Although COVID forced us to suspend in-person group tours, the important work of educating students and adults about the Holocaust has not stopped. Utilizing virtual tour software and Zoom, students and adults virtually walk through The Breman’s Holocaust exhibition with a live docent (tour guide). Supplemented with lesson plans for educators and prerecorded videos of Survivor stories, students learn about the Holocaust through the lens of the four R’s: Resourcefulness, Resilience, Resistance and Rescue.
Other Events of Note 18 Voices: A Liberation Day Reading of Young Writers’ Diaries From The Holocaust | Presented in partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage on the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The Righteous: A Play Reading & Discussion | Playwright Jeff Cohen, Dr. Michael Berenbaum, and Kelley Szany in conversation with Richard Salomon on the story of a man who risked his life and the lives of his family to stand up against evil.
Sophie Scholl in Atlanta, America, and the World | Following a year of civic unrest and resistance in the United States, the Goethe-Zentrum asked the communities in Atlanta and the Southeast what Nazi resistance fighter Sophie Scholl’s legacy might mean for protest and democracy in the 21st century. White Supremacy in 2021: Putting Violent Extremists on Trial | Amy Spitalnick, Charles Chavis, Rabbi Joe Prass, and Rev. ARTS & CULTURE Through art, music, dance, and other forms of artistic expression, The Breman connects audiences to Jewish history, culture, and arts through creative experiences. We celebrate Jewish contributions to culture through the Molly Blank Cultural Series, art and history exhibitions, programs, book talks, and more. Jewish history goes back thousands of years and the Jewish diaspora spread people across the globe. We have many stories to tell through a broad range of exhibitions and performances.
Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 19331945, presenting a detailed history of the events leading to the Holocaust, is the cornerstone of the museum’s exhibitions program. The exhibition was designed by local architect and Holocaust survivor Ben Hirsch z”l), and features historic photographs, personal memorabilia, family documents, and videotaped interviews with Atlanta-area survivors. In the last year, the exhibition has been updated with new text labels and other changes to make it ADA accessible.
Google Arts & Culture (May 2020 – present) has been a leading platform in virtual exhibitions and digital collections since 2011. The Breman launched our Google Arts & Culture page alongside an Atlanta rollout with more than a dozen arts and culture institutions in the city. Stories include Abe Goldstein and Prior Tire, Eighteen Artifacts: A Story of Jewish Atlanta, The Temple Bombing of 1958, Women Air Service Pilot: The Story of Evelyn Greenblatt Howren, and The Arbiser Family Collection.
A Jazz Memoir: Photography by Herb Snitzer (September 4, 2020 – March 31, 2021). With a career covering more than 50 years, Snitzer is known for his photographs of prominent African American musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, and others. Snitzer’s photographic, social and political interests cover a wide spectrum of issues especially freedom, equality and justice, which find their way into his visual work. Additional programming for the exhibition includes live virtual tours of the exhibition led by curator Tony Casadonte.
Terra inFIRMA (September 7 – December 31, 2020), was a virtual exhibition curated by The Breman of 60 artists presenting works inspired by the urgent need to address global warming and heal our natural environments. The original exhibition was curated by the Dr. Bernard Heller Museum, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, New York.
