WILLIAM BREMAN JEWISH HERITAGE MUSEUM 2020 Annual Report July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020

MISSION

Connect people to Jewish history, culture, and arts.

VISION

A community filled with mutual respect and understanding that resonates with Jewish values.

Photographer Henri Dauman gives a gallery talk for the exhibition Henri Dauman: Looking Up.

Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners, The Breman Museum’s 2019-2020 year was filled with exceptional programs, events and exhibitions that were a testament to the museum’s distinctive history, the quality of our growing collections, and the boundless energy of our staff and board. Even though we were faced with unexpected challenges, the past year continued to surpass expectations and it is our pleasure to share the highlights with you. The popular photography exhibition, “Henri Dauman: Looking Up,” featured images of iconic personalities of the 20th Century—the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley—by Holocaust survivor and self-taught photographer Henri Dauman. The Joe Alterman Trio, with special guest Lena Seikaly, gave us an afternoon filled with music and romance for the Molly Blank Concert Series. And in partnership with First Congregational Church and Neranenah (formerly the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival), we presented a wellattended talk “African Americans, American Jews & American Popular Music” with composers/musicians Ben Sidran and Rev. Dwight Andrews. In March, the COVID-19 pandemic required us to close the museum to the public. Even though this disruption necessitated changes to the schedule and modes of presentation, The Breman has continued to

bring high-caliber programming to the community. For example, our new virtual speaker series averages 250 live participants per event and is seen by hundreds more on demand on The Breman channel on YouTube. The Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education at The Breman began presenting speakers via Zoom and is developing methods to present virtual museum tours, speakers, and to create other digital resources for educators. As we look forward to the day when we can once again gather in person, we are already seeing, and taking advantage of, the positive impacts of this shift to online programs. We have had an increase in constituent engagement through social media and since The Breman has been presenting more online programming, we’ve seen a 20% increase in participation from people in the 18-24 age range. We have also seen a greater geographical reach with online audiences from across the nation and even worldwide. We are very excited about expanding audiences and deepening impact through virtual experiences. We are enormously proud of our role in our community’s cultural life and the incredibly positive impact The Breman Museum has had on the lives of so many. Thank you for joining us on this journey and for your continued support along the way.

Of Note • Since the COVID-19 closure, we have developed virtual programming to provide meaningful and fun digital experiences and using social media to keep audiences engaged. • In April, over 300 people watched a livestreamed performance by awardwinning pianist Joe Alterman, cosponsored by The Breman with Neranenah (formerly the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival). • A popular virtual Southern Jewish History Series has been attended by hundreds of people from the local area and across the United States. • As a founding partner of the multiinstitutional initiative Atlanta Museums at Home (ATLMuseumsatHome.org), the Breman shared content from 11 organizations, culminating each week with a virtual “Field Trip Friday” event. For example, The Breman posted an online presentation by local magicians Joe M. Turner and Tommy Johns who gave a lesson teaching magic tricks and illusions for children. • Since the museum has been presenting more online programming, there has been: »» a 20% increase in participation from people in the 18-24 age range; »» growth in online engagement with a 20% gain in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter followers; »» our email list grew 18%; and »» there has been a 35% increase in website pageviews.

Signature Programs

BEARING WITNESS

1,490

Attendees

As we see misinformation and anti-Semitism continue to rise, the Weinberg Center’s Bearing Witness is one of the most critical educational programs we offer. Last year we presented six speakers with unforgettable stories from the Holocaust (pictured clockwise): George Rishfeld, Henry “Hank” Lewin, Ben Walker, Helen Weingarten, Murray Lynn (z”l), and Paula Neuman Gris. Consistently, surveys show that more than 60% of Bearing Witness attendees had never heard a survivor, indicating there is still an enormous audience for us to reach.

MOLLY BLANK CONCERT SERIES

185 Attendees

The Molly Blank Concert Series with the Joe Alterman Trio and special guest Lena Seikaly gave us a sweet afternoon filled with music and romance. “Let’s Fall in Love” featured songs from the Great American Songbook including iconic tunes from Sinatra, Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. This performance was presented in partnership with Neranenah (formerly the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival).

HISTORIC JEWISH ATLANTA TOURS

418

Attendees

The Historic Jewish Atlanta Tours continued to be popular with four out of seven tours being sold out. Tour excursions included Five Points (sold out), Historic Oakland Cemetery (sold out), Factory Town (sold out), The Temple, The Roosevelt, a Civil Rights Trolley Tour (sold out), and a virtual tour for Field Trip Friday “Atlanta in Time of Crisis.”

Lillian and A.J. Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education The Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education makes authentic resources on the Holocaust available to teachers, students, and institutions. Last year, Volunteer Museum Educators (VME) gave tours of the “Absence of Humanity” exhibition to more that 7,000 students (grades 5-12). Since COVID-19, the Weinberg Center has successfully presented speakers online and is investigating methods to present virtual tours, speakers, and expanded digital resources that connect to the Georgia Core Curriculum for 5th through 12th grades. The Yom HaShoah 55th Annual Community-Wide Holocaust Commemoration on April 19, 2020 occurred at a time of increasing concern about COVID-19. A large gathering, which typically draws 500 including many elderly, was out of the question. Working with event co-sponsors — Eternal Life-Hemshech and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta — we were able to quickly pivot to an online presentation featuring Holocaust survivor Ilse Eichner Reiner, in a rare appearance, with a personal Yom HaShoah message to the world followed by remarks from Anat Sultan-Dadon, Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States. These video remarks have been viewed by more than 2,000 people.

volunteer docent recruits. Docent Candidates are required to complete oral and written assignments, pass a qualifying exam, and make a commitment to guide at least one tour a month (12 a year). We have seen major improvements in the quality of docents and their ability to be effective communicators as a result of work done by the Gutenstein Museum Educator Fellows on updated docent scripts and preand post-visit lesson plans. Ida Pearle and Joseph Cuba Archives For Southern Jewish History The Ida Pearle and Joseph Cuba Archives for Southern Jewish History is involved in a variety of efforts to grow and share the collection, the largest and most complete repository for Jewish history in the Southeast. This year the Archives began implementing an upgrade of its collections platforms to expand online digital access for researchers and elevate the museum to the highest standards in the archives field. The project is on schedule to be completed by the end of the calendar year. The Jewish Genealogical Society of Georgia (JGSG) began presenting online sessions even before the closure when three speakers from the Shapell Manuscript Foundation were unable to travel to Atlanta to present their Civil War Roster project. The subsequent virtual webinar was attended by well over 100 people from all over the world. What would have attracted half the in-person audience was doubled overnight. Subsequent virtual meetings have garnered ever-growing attendance and fostered partnerships with genealogy societies throughout the region.

Curating Your Family Story, a program created by The Breman in partnership with Beit Hatfutsot Museum of the Jewish People in Israel, engaged 6th-grade students from Congregation Shearith Israel and led them on a search into their own pasts. The research, interpreted artistically, connected students to their family stories and to the greater narrative of Jewish heritage. CYFS winner Benjamin Rudisch won third place overall for English Speaking Countries at a ceremony at Beit Hatfutsot in Israel.

The Breman Museum with Repair the World and AgeWell Atlanta began a project, L’dor Vador: Oral Histories of Resilience, inviting the Jewish community to record an oral history about how the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is affecting them, their families, and the community. After recording the interviews, they will be processed and added to the museum’s archives where they will be made available online for anyone to read.
