ANNUAL REPORT Fiscal Year 2019 July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019
A Year of Magic and Transformation at The Breman! We hired our passionate new Executive Director, Leslie Gordon, to lead the dedicated staff of The Breman! We are moving forward with our goal to be a hub of Jewish education, literature, arts and culture! We are continuing to be true to the foundations of The Breman! Nothing is more inspiring than seeing teenagers dealing with issues of homelessness learn about Holocaust Survivor Bebe Forehand’s experiences in the Holocaust and how those experiences relate to their own lives, and hearing them sing with Bebe about the beauty in the world! In addition to our Chop Art summer program, we were able to teach more than 13,000 students and 41,000 members of the public about the Holocaust this year. We have continued the sold-out Historic Jewish Atlanta Tours, and expanded our audience for Southern Jewish History with a popup exhibition in libraries developed from materials in our Cuba Family Archives. Speaking of magic, we broke all previous attendance records with our exhibition on Harry Houdini, and we gained national attention with our Molly Blank Jewish Concert Series! We plan to continue to learn, teach, entertain, sing, play music, dance, awe, inspire, and celebrate together as we enter our 25th year! Your Board Chair,
Lori J. Shapiro
This year has been a transformative one for The Breman Museum as we institute new programs, design new exhibitions, continue to expand our reach with our Holocaust Education, and grow the amazing Cuba Family Archives. During the past year, our outstanding staff has initiated new partnerships and strengthened old ones in order to build towards the future. The Breman is an institution that acknowledges, highlights and fosters a sense of the immeasurable contributions of Jewish culture and history both locally and globally; a place where we see respectful remembrance and outstanding creative expression side by side. Given my roots in Jewish culture and my Southern identity, I was thrilled to be chosen to lead the Museum during this exhilarating time. As you read this annual report, may it remind you of our recent successes and may it help to energize you about the future of The Breman Museum in 2020 and beyond. I know you are as excited as I am about all we’re working to accomplish. Thank you all for your confidence in us and for your invaluable support. You’ve made The Breman what it is today.

YEAR AT A GLANCE OF NOTE:
Having served as the interim director of the Lillian and A.J. Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education since 2017, Rabbi Joseph W. Prass was made the permanent director in May 2019. Rabbi Prass has more than 20 years of experience teaching about Judaism and the Holocaust in schools, colleges, synagogues, and summer camps. In April 2019, the Breman Museum and the Georgia Public Library Service announced a new statewide partnership. The program allows library patrons to check out a Breman Family Pass, good for four free general admissions, from any of the 407 public libraries in Georgia. Patron-level members and above now have two new benefits from the Reciprocal Organization of Associated Museums (ROAM) and Southeastern Reciprocal Museums (SERM) providing free general admission to Breman members at participating museums.

Bearing Witness is the most popular and wellattended event offered at the Museum with approximately 400 attendees at each event requiring the Museum to rent additional chairs to accommodate the audience. Last year we presented six first-generation Holocaust Survivor speakers: Ben Walker, Bebe Forehand, Robert Ratonyi, Helen Weingarten, Murray Lynn, and Henry Birnbrey. Approximately 40% of those attending the Bearing Witness speaker series are first-time visitors to The Breman Museum. Last year a generous grant from the Sara Giles Moore Foundation allowed the Breman to provide this program free to attendees.
The Molly Blank Jewish Concert Series had two sold-out performances: Salute to Hollywood: Jewish Contributions to Academy Awards® Best Original Songs and The Music of the Marx Brothers: An Evening of Song and Comedy. The performance of From The Top Hosted by Lara Downes was broadcast on NPR stations providing airtime to more than 300,000 listeners nationwide. As with other programs, the partnerships with other organizations including Theatrical Outfit, the Atlanta Jewish Music Festival, and From the Top to produce these events is a mutually beneficial relationship bringing new audiences to all.
The Historic Jewish Atlanta Tour Series explores history at its source. Once a month, the Museum goes beyond the walls of the Museum and provides guided tours of historic sites related to the Jewish history of Atlanta. Such sites include the Temple, Oakland Cemetery, and a Civil Rights Trolley Tour. The series was inspired by our smart phone app, “Historic Jewish Atlanta,” which can be downloaded for free on both Apple and Android platforms.
LILLIAN AND A.J. WEINBERG CENTER FOR HOLOCAUST EDUCATION The main purpose of The Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education is to make authentic resources on the Holocaust available to teachers, students, and institutions. The Breman Museum also conducts and facilitates original Holocaust research maintaining exceptionally high standards of scholarship while conserving and passing on the memory of the Holocaust so that the lessons of past horrors may continue to inform future generations.
Yom HaShoah continues to be a successful event with about 400 people in attendance. The featured speaker was Hershel Greenblat who was born in the caves of Ukraine and survived the Holocaust because of the resourcefulness and determination of his parents in evading the Nazis. This year’s 54th Annual Community-Wide Holocaust Commemoration was attended by a wide delegation of people, including, for the first time, the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp. Participants in the Summer Institute on Teaching the Holocaust consistently give high praise to the quality of the program. Said one participant, “I have learned a pedagogical approach and a deeper appreciation for the human aspects of the Holocaust.” For four days, educators were part of in-depth seminars on topics central to understanding the Holocaust. This includes daily meetings and discussions with Holocaust Survivors and instruction by renowned Holocaust educators from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies,
and other important Holocaust education organizations. We are committed to providing educators with first-rate Holocaust teaching resources across grade levels, subject areas, and curricula, while addressing Georgia Performance and Core Curricula We Are Here! Teaching the Holocaust to Jewish Families highlights the courageous responses of Jewish people and provides a balanced understanding of the Holocaust, strengthening Jewish pride in participating families. Families learn about the personal impact of the Holocaust together. Time is split between on-site at the Breman, and off-site at various Jewish organizations and religious institutions across Atlanta. For three years, the Breman Museum has partnered with ChopArt, an organization dedicated to empowering youth experiencing issues related to homelessness through creative expression. Through the program From Generation to Generation, teens learn positive methods for constructive self-healing. Last year, teens met with Bebe Forehand, a Holocaust Survivor from Belgium, Breman Holocaust educators, ChopArt counselors, and teaching artists for a week-long summer program where they created journals and an art project collage. The new Gutenstein Museum Educator Fellowship program was launched for graduate-level, paid fellowships in museum studies. Last year we had a student from the University of West Georgia, who is not Jewish, join the Weinberg Center staff. This fellow contributed greatly to the Weinberg Center by creating a universal docent script, writing pre- and post-visit lesson plans to enhance the educational experience of student visitors, researching and rewriting text to create a short biography for one of our local Holocaust Survivors, and assisting a few of our Holocaust Survivor speakers with their Bearing Witness presentations.

CUBA FAMILY ARCHIVES FOR SOUTHERN JEWISH HISTORY In partnership with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Georgia, the Archives served 133 people at genealogical workshops to foster an interest in Jewish heritage and family research. Attendees learn research tips, Holocaust genealogy, the basics of DNA research and more.
The Cuba Family Archives for Southern Jewish History at the Breman Museum is the largest and most complete repository for Jewish history in the Southeast. The archives department is responsible for processing collections, updating the catalog, reviewing new additions to the collection, aiding researchers, leading programs and initiatives to make the archives accessible to the public, overseeing archives internship programs, and providing counsel to the curatorial team. The museum draws upon the collection for in-house exhibitions and programs as well as online exhibitions so these critical stories of Jewish history from the South can be explored by researchers around the world. Curating Your Family Story has greatly benefited from the partnership with Beit Hatfutsot. Much of the program management is handled by Beit Hatfutsot which has led to high rates of participation and engagement at the Museum as well as an increase in the quality of family story submissions. In the last year, the program was restructured to include an orientation with parents and youth at The Breman Museum. This allowed for participants to the see parts of the Museum that gave context and provided inspiration for their own storytelling. As part of the orientation, students were able to practice their interviewing skills on their parents.
We had five interns in our archives department and one intern with our exhibitions department last year. Interns with the archives team gain a basic introduction of archives and do a basic, hands-on, supervised project that introduces them to archives and museum studies. Several of these interns gained class credit towards their graduate degree programs.

EXHIBITIONS & PROGRAMS The Breman’s three exhibition galleries consist of a permanent gallery dedicated to the Holocaust and two galleries for special exhibitions on a variety of mission-related topics with unique programs such as talks and workshops to accompany the exhibitions. Attendance from exhibition-related programming increased more than 300% from last year, and general attendance set new records for the Museum in May and June.
from local area magicians. Magical Mondays brought many first-time visitors and nonmembers to the Museum.
PERMANENT EXHIBITION
Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 1933-1945, presenting a detailed history of the events leading to the Holocaust, is the cornerstone of the Museum’s exhibitions program. TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS Eighteen Artifacts: A Story of Jewish Atlanta, (2015-2019), showcases important artifacts representing major turning points in the story of Jewish Atlanta and the Jewish men and women who were instrumental in creating essential social, business, and educational organizations. Inescapable: The Life and Legacy of Harry Houdini, (April 14-August 11, 2019), was very well-received and provided an opportunity to design exceptional adjunct programming related to the exhibition which, in turn, drove attendance numbers. For the Houdini exhibition, the Museum brought in a program advisor, magician Joe Turner, to assist with designing a series of events including Magical Mondays, where youth learned magic tricks
Vedem Underground: The Secret Magazine of Terezin, (October 14, 2018-March 10, 2019), told the story of a secret society of teenage boys who set out to defy the Third Reich’s ban on free speech and undermine the propaganda machine behind the regime’s biggest hoax by launching what would become the longest-running underground magazine regularly produced by Nazi camp prisoners. Vedem, which means “In The Lead” in Czech, unflinchingly documented life within the walls of the Terezin Ghetto, a Czechoslovakia “show camp” designed by the Nazis to obscure their plans of mass extermination for the Jews. TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS Eighteen Artifacts: A Story of Jewish Atlanta, is a pop-up traveling exhibition created by The Breman Museum based on the gallery exhibition of the same name. It is currently on display at Georgia Public Libraries through a partnership with the Georgia Public Library Service, libraries statewide. Who Am I? Young Minds Forced to Choose, on display May 15-August 1, 2019. This pop-up exhibition created by the ArnoldLiebster Foundation examines the lives and experiences of young Jehovah’s Witnesses who suffered due to their refusal to accept Nazi ideology.
