WELCOME TO THE BRIGHTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016 Welcome to the 2016 festival celebrating Nature and Science, two interconnected subjects that run closely alongside the history of music. Experiments with sound and instrument making were always associated also with the evolution of pitch and tuning systems; something far from standardised in all of the music we call ‘early’. At the same time, the sound of birds and other creatures was a musical inspiration, and possibly the origin of ornamentation and variation. Just listen to a blackbird or skylark, not to mention the rich polyphony of a dawn chorus! Even the earliest materials used to make instruments: bones, antlers, skins and sinew, derive directly from the natural world. This year’s range of events will delve into this fascinating world while also examining the influence of the sheer beauty and majesty of nature upon composers and the writers of the texts they set to music. From delicate flowers associated with love and devotion to awe-inspiring storms and earthquakes, features of the natural world have inspired us to develop the science of music. Join us for our free introduction day on Saturday 15th October and sample some of what is in store this year.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE SCIENCE OF INSTRUMENTS
A 45 minute concert ideal for 2-5 year olds but younger children also welcome (must be accompanied by an adult) Prepare for an exciting journey around baroque Europe, and meet the instruments that live there – get up close with the wise old double bass, the fun-loving oboe and the troublesome horns. Join players from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for these interactive concerts and be ready to clap, sing and bounce your way through the 17th century. THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC: THE MUSIC OF NATURE Festival introduction and preview day Chaired by Flora Dennis (University of Sussex) A day of free talks, tasters, live music and open discussions on subjects and ideas arising from this year’s theme – Nature and Science. Topics will include the development and conservation of instruments, an introduction to historic pitch and tuning, the inspiration of the natural world and an introduction and background story behind several festival events. NATURE: FOUR SEASONS OF MUSIC Workshop for loud and soft winds, plucked and bowed strings and consort singers Led by Alison Kinder Former BREMF Live! multi-instrumentalist and inspiring workshop leader Alison Kinder runs a day designed for consort players and singers with some experience. This workshop welcomes all voices, strings, wind, brass, house-trained windcaps and tame double reeds, for a musical exploration of the seasons. Mistress Winter giving way to the sounds of the Suffolk owl and the merry minds of All creatures now, as The leaves be greene... Some pieces will be instrumental so singers would be wise to have an instrument to hand, and not all pieces will require loud winds so double reed and windcap players should have an alternative instrument or voice. ATHANASIUS KIRCHER: MUSIC, SCIENCE, AND NATURAL MAGIC L’Avventura London Žak Ozmo director, baroque guitar, archlute Emily Baines recorders Jim O’Toole violin, fiddle Natasha Kraemer cello, percussion David Gordon harpsichord with Grace Davidson soprano Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) was a 17th-century German Jesuit polymath who published over 40 works on subjects ranging from music to Egyptology. He also used alchemy and mathematics to explain such musical phenomena as the cure of Saul’s melancholy by David’s harp, the cure of the tarantula’s bite, the harmonic organisation of the human body and the power of birdsong. This innovative and entertaining programme will illustrate the most memorable chapters from nine books of Kircher’s masterpiece through music by Kircher, Biber, Vivaldi, Rameau, and Handel (among others), with improvisatory dance music (including tarantella, of course!), traditional Hebrew songs, street songs, and much more! THE WOODS SO WILD Piers Adams recorders and David Wright harpsichord Recorder maestro Piers Adams and his Red Priest companion, harpsichordist David Wright, take a meander through the crazy world of the early Baroque era, with an emphasis on the wild and the woody! From trilling songbirds to the thrill of the hunt, the programme showcases the extraordinary virtuosity and bizarre flights of fancy which characterise the 17th century stylus phantasticus (as featured on their new CD Wild Men of the Seicento) – together with a brief visit into the 18th century for a transcription of Vivaldi’s famous Goldfinch Concerto. Lighting design by Pitch Black Dramatic moments in the life of Galileo, astronomer, physicist and philosopher; tried by the Inquisition, excommunicated and subjected to house arrest for his scientific beliefs. But he also had a passion for music. His father, brother and son were all musicians and his father’s practical studies into pitch and string tension may have influenced Galileo away from abstract theory towards practical scientific experiments. Music will include much that Galileo would have known himself, including lute duets written by his father and works by Monteverdi, Carissimi, Gabrieli and Lassus. THE ART OF FUGUE Fretwork Asako Morikawa Reiko Ichise Sam Stadlen Emily Ashton Richard Boothby viols As Bach’s final great work shows, his understanding of reason, ‘science’ and mathematics was profound, even if his religious conviction was equally deep. Bach’s brilliant, exuberant handling of his strikingly original theme shows both his scientific understanding of how notes fit together with mathematical precision, and how the unfolding of the counterpoint can seem entirely natural; as he would no doubt have said, ‘God-given’. Celebrated viol consort Fretwork will introduce and play this ‘unfinished’ work in a new completion. Recent scholarship suggests that Bach deliberately left the final contrapunctus incomplete as a puzzle to be worked out. Richard Boothby will explain just how this has been done, including the use of clues left in Bach’s obituary. This modern take on the 16th-century intermedi spectaculars brings together music and drama from the 16th and 17th centuries with contemporary equivalents to the impressive stage machinery of the original intermedi. Film, projections, lighting effects, mime, yoga and dance are integrated with the music to tell the story of our Earth and how we have perceived it through the ages, from the core to the skies. Music ranges from extracts from the powerful ‘Earthquake’ mass of Antoine Brumel, through selections from Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Marco da Gagliano’s La Flora, pastoral Italian madrigals and instrumental dances to grand motets celebrating the Queen of Heaven. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Andy Watson, a wonderful volunteer and member of the BREMF Community Choir. He is greatly missed but still part of Gaia. Although Francis Bacon, 17th-century philosopher, statesman and visionary, is widely regarded as the father of modern science, his investigations into the nature of sound are little known. He was intrigued by seemingly magical effects like echoes and sympathetic vibration and sought to explain them through a series of experiments. Combining modern sound technology with ancient instruments, this programme explores the aural illusions that so intrigued Bacon, linking fresh interpretations of 17th-century music with newly composed pieces.

BOOKING INFORMATION Booking for most concerts opens to members of the Friends of the Festival Scheme (see page 18) on 22nd August and to the general public on 5th September. Prom Tickets (RVS or SP) can only be purchased on the door. For information on registration for BREMF workshops (Events 7 and 9) please see below. Registration for Event 1 is at semf.org.uk. Tickets for Event 6 may be booked from late August in person at any Brighton Museums venue or on 03000 290902. There are four ways to buy tickets in advance for most concerts promoted by Brighton Early Music Festival: 1. E-Tickets: you purchase these from bremf.org.uk, print them on your own printer and bring them to the concert together with the credit card with which you made the purchase. There is no booking fee for e-tickets. 2. Online Box Office Tickets: you purchase these online but have the tickets issued to you either by post or on the door. These are a practical solution if you are buying for people who may arrive at the concert separately from you (and your credit card – see above) or if you cannot easily print your own tickets. There is a handling charge of £2 per transaction for online Box Office tickets. 3. By post using the form on page 23 (£2 handling charge). 4. By phone (£2.50 handling charge) or in person (no fee) from the Brighton Dome Ticket Office, New Road, Brighton BN1 1UE (01273 709709), open Mon-Sat 10am to 6pm. Bookings for Events 1, 6, 7 and 9 cannot be handled by Brighton Dome Ticket Office. Please note that tickets, once paid for, cannot be refunded except in the event that the concert is cancelled. Seats are not numbered and are unreserved, but for most events we provide an informal seat reservation service for BREMF Friends at Supporter level and above and members of the Artistic Directors’ Circle (see page 18).
BOOKING FOR WORKSHOPS Pre-registration at bremf.org.uk is essential for BREMF workshops (Events 7 and 9). Deadlines are given on the website, but in all cases booking may be closed earlier if all places have been allocated. PROM TICKETS A £5 Prom Ticket is available on the door for Event 3 and for most Main Festival concerts (Events 10-26 except Events 14, 18 and 22), which admits you to a standing place (SP) or a restricted view seat (RVS) depending on the venue. These tickets are sold subject to availability on the day. A special Bargain Prom Pass (£50) is available at bremf.org.uk giving Prom Ticket access to all relevant concerts, subject to availability at time of purchase.
CONCESSIONARY TICKETS These are available to young people (age 12-25 inclusive) and those in receipt of state pension or benefits. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult; however, a Child Ticket must be obtained. Unaccompanied children under 16 cannot be the responsibility of the festival.
FESTIVAL TICKET SPECIAL OFFERS Save up to 30% with our Season Ticket. A Season Ticket costing £178 (£161 concessions) gives you a top price ticket to all Main Festival concerts (Events 10-26) except Events 18 and 22. This is subject to availability of tickets at the time of purchase – if the best seats for an event are sold out we will supply the next best available. Season Tickets can ONLY be obtained from bremf.org.uk or by using the postal booking form in this brochure. Save 10% by buying tickets for four or more different Main Festival concerts (Events 10-26, except Events 18 and 22) in one transaction. For the same qualifying events you can also save up to 20% with our group rate savings for multiple tickets for a single concert reductions start at 10% for a group of ten.
