Brighton Early Music Festival 2008 The history of the British Isles and Ireland is a fascinating one of constant influx of new peoples, cultures and languages, shifting borders, tribal wanderings, complex trading patterns and rich mythologies. Played out over thousands of years, traditional cultures have swapped stories, songs, instruments and ideas, which in turn have evolved in countless different ways. Some of these have become part of high culture for a while and then been used in popular folk practices – or vice versa. This year at BREMF we are celebrating some aspects of this very long tradition and exploring that often disputed territory where the boundaries meet; both between national styles and between what we nowadays understand as ‘classical’ and ‘folk’. To open the main festival we welcome our neighbours from Wales, Scotland and Ireland in a series of events spanning the weekend. This will feature traditional and medieval songs in Welsh, Irish and Middle English, Celtic fiddling alongside virtuosic baroque violin playing, and a variety of different harps including a beautiful gold-strung copy of the famous Trinity College Dublin harp – the national emblem of Ireland. This year there will be four BBC broadcasts from the festival, including our very first Performance on Three, featuring the celebrated Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.Another will be a documentary about our Brighton Early Music Live scheme, which we piloted last year. It returns again this year with some of the most talented young musicians emerging from the London conservatoires, playing together with local musicians from the traditional folk scene. As usual we will be taking our festival theme into schools throughout Brighton and Hove, as well as offering a range of workshops for singers and players of all levels – sometimes leading to participation in festival concerts. This year we also launch Sing Brighton! – a three year project that will actively promote singing throughout the region. As an inspiration to all, our opening Sing Brighton! concert will feature Tallis’s glorious 40 part motet Spem in Alium, along with multi-voice works by the Scottish composer Robert Carver. This event brings together a number of local choirs in a taste of things to come over the next three years. Clare Norburn and Deborah Roberts BREMF GOES DIGITAL. Are you on Facebook? If so, keep up-todate with all the latest festival news, by becoming a fan of the new Brighton Early Music Festival page. A Most Sunshiny Day presented by Shirley Collins with Pip Barnes
£10 (£8 conc)
A fascinating and timely look at the remarkable song culture of the rural labouring people of Sussex, illustrated with field recordings and pictures. This music had a great effect on the work of Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth, and remains a source of inspiration to many young singers today. These songs represent a direct and essential connection to our roots and history. Shirley Collins, author and English folk-singer, narrates, and the readings are by actor Pip Barnes. “These people were the last of an old school and they clung on to singing the old songs as one of the few things that remained constant in a rapidly changing world. And it's not only the songs, it's the life they stand for that matters". Bob Copper

Treasures of Tudor England
Thy Muse Lives on
The 2008 Choral Pilgrimage revived!
The Sixteen Harry Christophers director The 2008 Choral Pilgrimage is devoted to music by three composers born in,or just before, the reign of King Henry VIII: Robert Parsons, Christopher Tye and Robert White. They not only survived the Reformation and the turbulent years of King Edward VI and Queen Mary, but also lived to enjoy the relative security of a more established church under Queen Elizabeth I. In an age of conflicting ideologies, tormented consciences and extreme political reactions, these three composers created some of the most sublime music ever written. “Since singing is so good a thing, I wish all men would learn to sing” William Byrd The 2008 festival sees the launch of Sing Brighton! - a programme to spearhead access to singing across the city and beyond. Sing Brighton! will comprise a range of activities and performances from 2008 onwards, culminating in a number of high-profile community performances in the 2010 festival. It will include the formation of four new vocal groups, as well as: ✩working with existing choirs to broaden skills ✩bringing in outstanding performers and workshop leaders to inspire participants ✩Providing training for teachers, young singers, community/youth workers ✩Programming a series of high profile vocal events Why Sing Brighton! Many have experienced how singing can bond communities, increase the overall sense of wellbeing and even improve brain function and academic performance in the young.
