Welcome to the Brighton Early Music Festival 2011 The theme of ‘Dance’ has provided us with the perfect follow on to last year’s ‘Ritual’. It again allows us to look into the very origins of music and its place in human culture from the dawn of civilisation. Music and dance have always been intimately bound together – each influencing the other – throughout human history, and dance can be the physical expression of how music makes us feel, as well as being an integral part of how we have always enjoyed ourselves. Quite apart from music that actually accompanies dance, or grew from dance forms, the spirit of dance is at the heart of more music than we perhaps imagine. In this year’s festival we will be kindling that spirit in the flowing and ecstatic lines of chants by Hildegard of Bingen, in the thrilling dance of interweaving notes in great polyphonic works like Thomas Tallis’s forty-part motet Spem in alium, and in solo arias by Bach and Handel. This year we have included more public participation than ever. You can learn to belly dance (with a five week course from early September, see www.bremf.org.uk for details) and take part in a concert with Joglaresa, join a period dance workshop, sing the Victoria Requiem or Arab-Andalusian choruses. We’ve lots for kids too: watch them fuse ancient dances with contemporary STOMP-style percussion, or see a teen take on The Beggar’s Opera. Bring them to our great half term concert and take advantage of the fact that under 12s get in FREE at every event! And what better way to open the festival than with a ball? See you there!

The Victoria Requiem: workshop & performance Come and sing this glorious work to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Spain’s greatest Renaissance composer. This project has been possible thanks to generous support from the Newby Trust Limited Music students from Brighton and Hove have been working with Glyndebourne and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) to explore Handel’s opera Rinaldo. With the help of a professional team of artists, the students will play alongside professional musicians to perform extracts from Rinaldo, as well as their own compositions inspired by Handel’s setting of the story. Music and Dance in Remote Antiquity: an illustrated talk Dirk Campbell From the iconography of the ancient world, particularly Egypt, we can see that music and dance were central to life then as now. We can also deduce that where postures and instruments of modern times resemble those of the ancient world, then the instruments and dance are likely to have been similar. In this fully illustrated talk Dirk Campbell will explore fascinating connections between the ancient and modern worlds of the Mediterranean and Middle East, and play examples on a large number of traditional and reconstructed musical instruments. The Sixteen Harry Christophers director For their eleventh Choral Pilgrimage, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of perhaps the greatest composer of the Renaissance, Tomás Luis de Victoria. Like Palestrina, Victoria is a master craftsman, but he is more than that – he brings to his music qualities which one simply does not find in other composers of this era. We know him today for his penitential music, especially his glorious Requiem of 1605; but, on this pilgrimage, the group is exploring some of the sumptuous music Victoria wrote in honour of the Virgin Mary. Written in 1692, Fairy Queen is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There is, however, no Shakespeare used in the text, but rather each act is a series of Masques, introducing us to many diverse characters, such as Sleep, Mystery, the Four Seasons, Hymen and Phoebus; combining magic, metaphor and comedy. The Theatre Royal will provide the perfect backdrop for this exciting and new semi-staged production, giving a fresh look at Purcell’s finest theatre music.

Volunteer at BREMF Be part of a friendly team – the BREMF ‘family’ Attend concerts free • Meet festival artists BREMF relies on its voluntary helpers for many aspects of its activities – not just at concerts during the festival but throughout the year. If you are a student or young person looking for some work experience in the arts we can provide the opportunity for you to develop useful skills. In return we will happily provide references for potential employers. We also offer a couple of internships each year aimed at giving applicants the very best opportunity for gaining the skills to help them secure jobs in the arts. Volunteering as a student can be a useful first step. We are looking for reliable people who can commit themselves to helping with one or more of a wide range of activities.
We would particularly like to recruit people who can help with any of the following: • Assisting with publicity – at home or around the region • Driving performers (in your own car) • Driving the BREMF van during the festival • Helping with sound and lighting set-ups • Help with setups: chairs, staging, harpsichords etc. before and after concerts • Helping with admin (by email and telephone) • Helping with our education projects during the day (mostly January) • Helping at daytime events such as that in Jubilee Square on 1st October and at the late night events on White Night (29th October). Booking information Booking for most events other than workshops opens to members of the Friends of the Festival Scheme (see page 19) on 18th August and to the general public on 1st September. For additional information on booking for Event 24, and information on registration for workshops (events 1A, 4, 5) please see below. There are 4 ways to buy tickets in advance for most concerts promoted by Brighton Early Music Festival: 1. E -tickets: you purchase these from www.bremf.org.uk, print them on your own printer and bring them to the concert together with the credit card with which you made the purchase. There is no booking fee for e-tickets. 2. O nline Box Office tickets: you purchase these online but have the tickets issued to you either by mail or on the door. These are a practical solution if you are buying for people who may arrive at the concert separately from you (and your credit card – see above) or if you cannot easily print your own tickets. There is a handling charge of £1 per transaction for online Box Office tickets. 3. B y post using the form on page 23 (£1 handling charge). 4. B y phone (transaction fee £2.25) or in person (no fee) from the Brighton Dome Ticket Office, New Road, Brighton BN1 1UE (01273 709709), open Mon-Sat 10am to 6pm. Tickets for events 1A, 3-6, 9 and for the free BBC event (8) cannot be purchased from Brighton Dome Ticket Office. Tickets for Event 24 can also be obtained from the Theatre Royal Box Office (New Road, Brighton BN1 1SD; 0844 871 7650). Tickets purchased from this Box Office cost an additional £1 per ticket (in person) or £2.50 per ticket plus £2.85 transaction charge if booked by phone. Brighton Early Music Festival has held most prices for 2011 at 2010 levels, and there are some excellent money-saving deals listed below! Please note that tickets, once paid for, cannot be refunded except in the event that the concert is cancelled. In general, seats are unreserved (including for Event 24), but for most events we provide an informal seat reservation service for BREMF Friends at Supporter level and above (see page 19). 22
BOOKING FOR WORKSHOPS Pre-registration at www.bremf.org.uk is essential for workshops (Events 1A, 4, 5). Deadlines are given on the website, but in all cases booking may be closed earlier if all places have been allocated. Please visit www.bremf.org.uk to book for the belly dancing course (deadline 1st September).
CONCESSIONARY TICKETS These are available to young people (age 12-25 inclusive), those aged 60 or more and those in receipt of state benefits. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult. However, a Child Ticket must be obtained. Unaccompanied children under 16 cannot be the responsibility of the festival. Free child tickets for Event 24 cannot be obtained from the Theatre Royal Box Office.
FESTIVAL TICKET SPECIAL OFFERS Save 40% with our Season Tickets. A Season Ticket, giving you a top price ticket to all events except Events 1A, and 3-5 costs £155 (£134 concessions) Season Tickets can ONLY be obtained from www.bremf.org.uk or by using the postal booking form in this brochure.
