PASSION

25th October to 10th November

BREMF 2013 explores the theme of ‘Passion’ in all its guises and moods. Artists and events include Emma Kirkby and Jacob Heringman, Red Priest, Joglaresa, L’Avventura, Bach’s St John Passion and two new music dramas: one on the life of eccentric composer and murderer Gesualdo, and a new adaptation of a novel by Sarah Dunant performed by Musica Secreta. Friday 25th October SONGS OF SINNE & SUBVERSION With more than a passing nod to Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and the Sex Pistols, Joglaresa explores links between songs from the Crusades to the present day.

Saturday 26th October (lunchtime) PASSION, BODY & SOUL Philomel plays a wide range of instruments in a medley of sacred and secular renaissance songs.

Saturday 26th October (evening) EARLY MUSIC ‘LATER’

The pick of the young artists from Early Music Live! over the years come together, with a celebrity presenter, in a late evening spectacular.

Sunday 27th October 40 SHADES OF SPEM IN ALIUM BREMF Consort of Voices is joined by Choir of the Year winners Chantage in music by Byrd and Tallis, including his great 40-part motet.

Friday 1st November CANDLE IN THE WIND

Red Priest is back with emotionally charged music by Handel.

Saturday 2nd November (lunchtime)

INSTRUMENTS OF PASSION

Trio Goya (Kati Debretzeni, Maggie Cole and Sebastian Comberti) plays music by Haydn and Beethoven.

Saturday 2nd November (evening)

IN THE COMPANY OF THE COURTESAN

Musica Secreta and BREMF Consort of Voices present an adaptation of another of Sarah Dunant’s gripping novels.

Sunday 3rd November BREAKING THE RULES

The Marian Consort and Celestial Sirens are joined by a celebrity actor as the extraordinary composer and murderer Carlo Gesualdo, in a new drama by Clare Norburn.

Thursday 7th November PUBLIC MASTERCLASS WITH

EMMA KIRKBY & JACOB HERINGMAN

Providing a fascinating insight into the art of interpretation, two lute-song duos work on John Dowland’s songs with two of the world’s greatest experts.

Friday 8th November THE IMAGE OF MELANCHOLY

Emma Kirkby and Jacob Heringman are joined by the two duos from the masterclass in songs and lute solos by John Dowland, celebrating the 450th anniversary of his birth.

Saturday 9th November (lunchtime) TALL TOWERS,

HUSBANDS – AND OTHER OBSTACLES TO LOVE Medieval group The Telling explores courtly love through the songs of the Troubadours and Trouvères.

Saturday 9th November (evening) ‘PROFANE DELIRIUMS’

– PORTUGUESE LOVE SONGS

L’Avventura raises the temperature with love songs ‘most seducing, the most voluptuous imaginable’.
