CITIES

Musical centres and the journeys between them

WELCOME TO THE BRIGHTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2014 If you are thinking you have just picked up a posh travel brochure, you are not far wrong! This year’s festival will take you on a number of musical journeys, not only to great cultural capitals such as Paris, Venice, London and Rome, but also on some pilgrimage treks and visits to unexpected places, often via intriguing means. Ever keen to encourage new audiences, we have made some innovations this year. Virtually all concerts now have a £5 Prom Ticket – available only on the door – allowing you a restricted view seat (RVS), or a standing place (SP), depending on the venue. Or get a Bargain Prom Pass online for only £50, giving Prom Ticket access to all relevant concerts. In response to advice from fire safety inspectors and comments about the acoustics in St Bartholomew’s Church, we have changed the audience layout there for all events. This will provide a much better experience for most of the audience, albeit with a reduction in the number of seats and of cheaper tickets to some events. B tickets may well sell out early on, but the situation is still under discussion, and more B seats may be released closer to the festival – subscribe to our e-newsletter to keep informed.

Clare Norburn and Deborah Roberts, Co-Artistic Directors

We would like to thank our Artistic Directors’ Circle Members, and Friends, Supporters, Contributors and Premium Contributors. Without your support, Brighton Early Music Festival simply could not continue to bring top quality artists to Brighton. Thank you! Brighton Early Music Festival gratefully acknowledges financial support from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts (funded by the National Lottery) and Brighton and Hove City Council for their ongoing championship and support of the festival. In addition, without the support of trusts and foundations, Brighton Early Music Festival could not continue to support outstanding young performers and undertake community and education work in 2014/15. The Festival gratefully acknowledges financial support from the following organisations: The Dutton-Downing Trust, The Fenton Arts Trust, The Stanley Picker Trust and the Angus Allnatt Charitable Foundation. We would also like to thank the Mark Williams Foundation, East Brighton Trust and Southern Water for their generous support for Watercycle – a collaborative education project with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

THE GRAND TOUR SHORTS

EARLY MUSIC LIVE! YOUNG ARTISTS DAY New to early music, or just curious? You can drop in for a 30-minute concert over a drink or coffee, or attend the whole series of four during the morning, or repeated in the afternoon. Featuring the most exciting new talent on the early music scene, this day of events is inspired by the 18th-century English craze for taking ‘The Grand Tour’ around Europe. It provides a great introduction to an incredible variety of music spanning several centuries. Tickets: morning or afternoon ticket (all four concerts) £12 (£10 conc); standing tickets for individual concerts £4 each (on door only)

Morning 11am Ars Eloquentiae 11.45am Harmonia Artificiosa 12.30pm Fieri Consort 1.15pm Colin Scobie and Tom Foster Afternoon 2.30pm Ars Eloquentiae 3.15pm Harmonia Artificiosa 4pm Fieri Consort 4.45pm Colin Scobie and Tom Foster

SEX, LIES & VIOLINS Ars Eloquentiae

László Rózsa recorder James Toll and Guy Button violins Gavin Kibble cello Chad Kelly harpsichord

Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy was first published to huge acclaim in 1768 and remains a classic today. Heavily based on Sterne’s own experience (including several scandalous liaisons) the novel satirised the cult of travel literature and poked fun at the emerging bourgeois ideal of the ‘Grand Tour’. Featuring the music of Rameau, Tartini, Philidor, Porpora and others, this programme explores the musical landscape of a somewhat neglected period of European history; a time of stylistic eclecticism, formal trickery and wildly exaggerated emotion.

SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER THE COSMOPOLITAN BAROQUE Harmonia Artificiosa

Elicia Silverstein violin John McKean harpsichord

Virtuoso music from 17th-century European city centres Diverse and dynamic 17th-century music by Dario Castello, Francesco Rognoni, Heinrich Biber and Arcangelo Corelli. Ranging in sentiment from religious fervour to virtuosic caprice, this programme features music that shares a daring sense of experimentation, improvisation and spontaneity. Composed in the major cosmopolitan centres of Venice, Milan, Salzburg and Rome, this music thrilled contemporary audiences throughout Europe and beyond, reaching even as far as the Jesuit courts of Imperial China.

THE CRIES OF LONDON Fieri Consort Join the Fieri Consort within the hustle and bustle of the streets of Tudor London. Hear the market sellers shouting their wares in The Cries of London by Orlando Gibbons, and enjoy bawdy catches and English madrigals by Weelkes, Ravenscroft and others. Fieri are a young group of eight singers who perform without a conductor, exploring early music from a fresh perspective. Here they will expose the seldom-heard uncouth and raw side of England’s capital city. Ruth McElvanney and Camilla Harris sopranos; Rose Martin and Nancy Cole altos Ben Clark and Tom Kelly tenors; Ben McKee and David Maguire basses

TORINO! Colin Scobie violin and Tom Foster harpsichord After negotiating a descent through the Alps and into Italy, the 18th-century traveller’s first major port of call would be Turin. Here, he would be very unlucky not to encounter at least one outstanding violinist of Continental renown. Colin Scobie and Tom Foster revive some of the popular numbers by three of the local fiddling virtuosi.

Tickets: £12 (£10 conc); Prom Ticket/SP (on door only) £5

Journey back in time to the world of the Paris Opéra from the 1640s to the 1760s. Our guide for the evening is a quicksilver figure who delights in sprinkling mischief. He watches the political intrigue as the great composers Lully, and later Rameau, rule with rods of iron. While everything is grace personified under the spotlights, behind the scenes mischief runs riot. Powerplay weaves together baroque dance, drama and scenes, arias and dances from the operas of Lully and Rameau. It also includes an aria from Italian upstart Luigi Rossi’s opera Orfeo, famous for provoking a nationalistic riot at its Paris premiere in 1647.

These elements combined to produce an outpouring of creative energy in the arts, nowhere more evident than in the music of Purcell and Handel. This evening’s music celebrates all these aspects of London, from Purcell’s great ode, ‘Hail Bright Cecilia’, extolling the power of music itself, to Handel’s joyful Utrecht Te Deum, first performed in St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate the Peace of Utrecht. BOOKING INFORMATION Booking for most concerts opens to members of the Friends of the Festival Scheme (see page 18) on 20th August and to the general public on 3rd September. Promenade tickets (RVS or SP) can only be purchased on the door. For information on registration for workshops (Events 1-4, 8) please see below. There are four ways to buy tickets in advance for most concerts promoted by Brighton Early Music Festival: 1. E-tickets: you purchase these from bremf.org.uk, print them on your own printer and bring them to the concert together with the credit card with which you made the purchase. There is no booking fee for e-tickets. 2. Online Box Office tickets: you purchase these online but have the tickets issued to you either by post or on the door. These are a practical solution if you are buying for people who may arrive at the concert separately from you (and your credit card – see above) or if you cannot easily print your own tickets. There is a handling charge of £2 per transaction for online Box Office tickets. 3. By post using the form on page 23 (£2 handling charge). 4. By phone (£2.50 handling charge) or in person (no fee) from the Brighton Dome Ticket Office, New Road, Brighton BN1 1UE (01273 709709), open Mon-Sat 10am to 6pm. Bookings for Events 1-4 and 8 cannot be handled by Brighton Dome Ticket Office. Event 13 is promoted by Brighton Dome. Please see page 8 for specific pricing and ticketing information. Tickets for this event do not qualify for BREMF discounts (see below). Tickets for Events 19-21 can also be purchased from The Old Market Ticket/Box Office, open MonFri 1-6pm (theoldmarket.com, 01273 201801). However, tickets purchased in this way do not qualify for BREMF discounts (see below). Please note that tickets, once paid for, cannot be refunded except in the event that the concert is cancelled. Seats are not numbered and are unreserved, but for most events we provide an informal seat reservation service for BREMF Friends at Supporter level and above and members of the Artistic Directors’ Circle (see page 18).

BOOKING FOR WORKSHOPS Pre-registration at bremf.org.uk is essential for BREMF workshops (Events 2-4, 8). Deadlines are given on the website, but in all cases booking may be closed earlier if all places have been allocated. For Event 1, visit semf.org.uk

CONCESSIONARY TICKETS These are available to young people (age 12-25 inclusive), those aged 60 or more and those in receipt of state benefits. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult; however, a Child Ticket must be obtained. Unaccompanied children under 16 cannot be the responsibility of the festival. Please see pages 5 & 8 for specific concession criteria for Events 5 & 13 respectively.
