FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR NOTRE DAME COMMUNITY, The theme of this year’s ND Journal is Devoted to Learning. This simple phrase encompasses a constitutive element of the Notre Dame High School Mission Statement which reminds us that ND is a Catholic college preparatory high school “dedicated to educating young women and men to realize their full potential through a faith-filled environment.” For the past 66 years, Notre Dame has been fulfilling its mission as the premier Catholic high school in the Diocese of Trenton. As you browse the pages of the ND Journal, you will see the phrase Devoted to Learning come alive in the stories of our students, faculty and staff, alumni, the Board, and so many other stakeholders who recognize Notre Dame as a home for learning more about God, neighbor, and self. This year, we placed the spotlight on nine of our faculty and staff members who have committed their careers to teaching the students who enter our doors each year. The “40-Year Club” includes Ms. Julie Campo and Mr. Greg Schafer. The “30-Year Club” includes Mr. Lou Gibilisco, Mr. Joe McLaughlin, Mrs. Tracey Reed, Mr. Bill Rowland, Ms. Pam Verdi, Ms. Diane Wargo and Ms. Peggy Wroblewski. I am sure as you read more about their stories inside this issue, many of you will reconnect with your memories of them teaching you at ND. I know personally, in speaking with the many alumni who come back to visit our campus, the impact that these exceptional teachers had in their lives. As these teachers have dedicated themselves to teaching, their students devoted themselves to learning and became successful in both their professional and personal lives. What a blessing these faculty members are to our community! Our Strategic Plan (please see pages 2 – 3), Building on Excellence, is our vision and roadmap for the present, and preparation for our future. One of the highlights represented in this section is Goal 3 of Academics and the creation of a new four-year comprehensive College Counseling Plan. A special ad hoc committee was formed which resulted in this plan to better serve our students in the college planning process. As I begin my fifth year of service as President of Notre Dame, I also truly feel Devoted to Learning. The fundamental obligation of every Catholic high school is to help our students not only receive the intellectual and academic tools they need for success in their future careers and lives but also an education that prepares them for eternity and our vocation that comes from God alone. As always, thank you for your support and prayers.

Go Irish!

Kenneth E. Jennings President

Devoted to LEARNING

There is no greater testament to a teacher’s devotion to education than their longevity. Why do teachers remain in positions in a Catholic high school when often they make less money than their counterparts in public education? The answer to that question can be found in the statements below. Each of the following Notre Dame faculty are members of what we are fondly referring to as The 30 or 40-Year Club. Their motivation is clear. It is their love for teaching and the time spent with students and colleagues. Each of them believes Notre Dame is a family, a home away from home.

JULIE CAMPO ★ 41 YEARS Mathematics Faculty When I started at Notre Dame 41 years ago, it was like coming home, and it was the best working environment imaginable. Over the years, the thought never crossed my mind to look for another teaching position. I have always thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie shared with my colleagues and the personal satisfaction of sharing knowledge with my students. I have never wanted to do anything else but teach math, and ND has given me the gift of doing that in my own style. LOU GIBILISCO ★ 33 YEARS Performing Arts Director and Department Chairperson Coming into Notre Dame in 1990 the Performing Arts and Visual Arts programs were struggling. However, the Administration and Notre Dame Community were so welcoming and supportive that it fostered an atmosphere where these programs could flourish. Over the years whether it’s the musical, dance program, Concert Band, the Madrigal, or the Art classroom our kids and parents have embraced, embodied, and grown these programs to excellence far beyond anyone's expectations! My biggest blessing has been the privilege and honor of leading the ND Community in worship through music at our monthly Liturgies. The atmosphere at our Liturgies, I feel, doesn’t exist anywhere else and makes Notre Dame the special place that it is! JOE MCLAUGHLIN ★ 36 YEARS Student Life Office, Head Coach Track and Cross County When I came to Notre Dame in 1988 to apply for an assistant coach position, I had no idea how long I would stay or how much coaching would impact my life. Here I am, 36 years later, and I could not be prouder of where I work and what I have accomplished. I am very grateful for the opportunities Notre Dame has given me to grow personally, spiritually, and professionally. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching and mentoring the numerous athletes that have come and gone and am beyond grateful for the years I coached with my mentor, Joe Wroblewski. l am very fortunate in that I have built many friendships and relationships over the years while at Notre Dame. Notre Dame is family. TRACEY REED ★ 32 YEARS Religion Department Chairperson Thirty-two years ago in 1991, when I came to Notre Dame as a student teacher, I remember thinking that this was where I belonged. Former ND President and Principal, Mary Liz Ivins was my mentor and it was her example that inspired so much of my growth over the years. When I experienced my first Kairos (Kairos V), I was in awe that a program could provide the opportunity for so much connection, healing and hope for students. This year we will offer Kairos’ CXXII – CXXIV and I am still in awe. I still see students on social media as adults with their own children proudly wearing their Kairos cross. I hear stories of people connecting at college, in the grocery store, and once even in a traffic accident when they recognized that cross. God has touched so many lives through Notre Dame and being a part of that is all I’ve ever wanted in a career.

4 NDJournal

BILL ROWLAND ★ 30 YEARS Religion Faculty When I first came to Notre Dame 30 years ago I felt accepted immediately as part of the ND Family. The spirit, warmth, and camaraderie were evident and greatly appreciated. As I look back I realize time does go by quickly, and I have been mentored by many great people. As a coach of 28 years I had the pleasure of seeing many great athletes, but more importantly, fostering growth for all who were on my teams. Through the victories and defeats, I have learned many life lessons. To me, that's what education is all about, learning lessons that you take with you for life. Notre Dame is a place of growth, friendship, and spiritual development. That's why I have committed my adult life to Notre Dame. A passion that will never be replaced in my heart. GREG SCHAFER ★ 43 YEARS Physical Education and Mathematics Faculty, Head Coach Tennis I entered the halls of Notre Dame in the fall of 1981. The magic of the school was captivating and still is for me. There has not been a day where I have not looked forward to coming to work. Teaching and coaching have been a pleasure. Nothing beats the feeling of a student solving a difficult problem or developing and using a skill that was taught. I have had that feeling every day for the past 43 years. Go Irish! PAM PIRONE ‘79 VERDI ★ 38 YEARS Mathematics Faculty As an alumni of Notre Dame High School, I was given an invaluable education and I have many fond memories that I will always cherish. I truly believed, then and now, that Notre Dame is a great place to be a teenager. To me, we are much more than just a high school. Promoting Christian values coupled with providing an exceptional education is why Notre Dame is special. I stayed for over 38 years because I view Notre Dame as a community that truly cares about not only its students, but the entire school. I can sometimes be heard saying that Notre Dame is like my second family. I was happy to be able to give my son who graduated in 2014, the opportunity to experience the same as I did. DIANE WARGO ★ 37 YEARS English and Performing Arts Faculty For 37 years I have proudly had the privilege of calling Notre Dame my home. It really is the community that sets ND apart from other schools. There is a palpable sense of compassion, caring and love when you walk into the building. For me, being able to teach, direct, coach, and serve has been a true blessing in my life. My job has been to foster the light in others and I have found that those who worked with me in the classroom, on the stage, in the gym, or serving the community, are the same people who reach out to me as adults to hold my hand in dark times or celebrate milestones. You can always find the comfort and friendly face of an ND alum whether in a hospital, restaurant, or even an airport in Italy. What ND does is create relationships that span a lifetime. Notre Dame is the golden thread that ties us all together and I am forever grateful for my career that was built upon a family foundation. PEGGY CALAMIA ‘75 WROBLEWSKI ★ 37 YEARS Social Studies Faculty Not only was I educated at Notre Dame, but I have been fortunate to spend the last 37 years teaching here. Notre Dame is a school committed to educating the whole child and making faith the focus of that education. Every day I am blessed to watch our students grow not only academically but also spiritually. Notre Dame is more than a high school…it is a faith-based community that together celebrates life’s triumphs and supports each other during the difficult times in life. Notre Dame will always hold a special place in my heart. It is a great place to be a teenager AND a teacher.

NEW NOTRE DAME FACILITIES RECEIVE BISHOP’S BLESSINGS

Notre Dame has always been a home away from home for our students, so what better time than before our Homecoming Game on September 23 to celebrate some special moments. Before the game against Robbinsville, three new Notre Dame spaces were blessed by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop O’Connell blessed our newly renovated boys’ and girls’ locker rooms named in honor of legendary coaches Chappy Moore and Barb Major. Coach Chappy Moore is the all-time winningest football coach in ND history. Coach Moore was known for his tenacious and demanding work ethic combined with a leadership that inspired young men to greatness on the field and off. Coach Barb Major was the all-time winningest Field Hockey Coach in ND history and served a long tenure as Notre Dame Athletic Director. Thanks to the generosity and major gifts from Tracey and Jim Fisher, for the Chappy Moore Boys’ Locker Room, and Kathleen and Michael Castellano, for the Coach Barb Major Girls’ Locker Room, the ND student-athletes have two of the very best facilities in the state of New Jersey.

8 ND Journal

Making his way outside, Bishop O’Connell blessed the path that our athletes take before each game played on Msgr. Walter E. Nolan Field. That pathway has been beautifully paved and embellished with shamrocks and will forever be known as Coach John McKenna Way, in honor of Notre Dame’s legendary and beloved coach who passed away in 2021. Coach McKenna also served as Moderator of the Catholic Athletes for Christ, which began in the Diocese of Trenton. Coach McKenna believed that athletics was a means to encounter God and faith as well as a sense of community in teamwork. The last blessing was for the new soccer and lacrosse turf field built in partnership with the Players Development Academy (PDA). In November the field was officially named after legendary and all-time winningest soccer coach, Mike Perone. A beautiful statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe was placed at the entrance to the field as a sign of our devotion to Our Lady, Notre Dame, and as the patroness of the Americas, an acknowledgment of the strong Hispanic/Latino influence of the game of soccer. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only apparition of Mary in North America.

PODCASTING IN JOURNALISM Mrs. Cindy Bannon, a faculty member in the English Department, has been working to incorporate instructional media into her students' everyday lessons. “The digital landscape has been changing how we consume media,” said Mrs. Bannon. “I wanted to create a more modernized way to get our news out.” Very few of her Journalism students get their information through newspapers or the radio. Instead, they listen to podcasts. So she decided to let her students create their own. She credits her former Journalism students, Francesco Morabito ‘22, Kerith Watson ‘24, and Sonny Durkin ‘24 with the idea for podcasts.

Their efforts put in motion the creation of a podcast studio in Mrs. Bannon’s classroom. As a first step, she put together a ”wish list” of equipment and software they needed. When the purchase was approved, they were off and running. Mrs. Bannon uses the podcast system in her classroom on a regular basis. It has been added as a final project option for Journalism I students. Mrs. Bannon’s goal for the future is to incorporate video reporting into her classroom, moving Notre Dame further into 21st century technology in the classroom.

PHYSICAL COMPUTING AND ROBOTICS CLASS SHOWCASE Students in the Physical Computing and Robotics Class demonstrated their capstone projects during a showcase. They created prototypes of automatic watering devices, robot candy dispensers, motion detectors and security systems, and a student-driven attendance system. The capstone projects were a pinnacle of what students learned in the class about sensors, microprocessors, and output devices.

CATHOLIC MISSION NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL DIVERSITY STATEMENT Notre Dame High School is a Catholic community that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion by building empathy, respect, understanding, and unity with people who are different from each other by honoring each individual as unique and made in God’s image. Notre Dame High School is dedicated to ensuring that our community has equitable access to available resources needed to enhance academic, spiritual, and social development regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, cultural background, ethnicity, linguistics, cognitive, and/or physical ability.

MASS FOR DIVERSITY We gathered to celebrate our annual Mass for Diversity on January 31. Fr. Jason Parzynski celebrated the liturgy assisted by Deacon Dr. Curtis Turner, Head of School for Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore, MD, who was also our guest homilist. Our SHADES students did an excellent job organizing and assisting in various ways during the liturgy. Following mass, special guest speaker and alumni, Mr. James Gee ‘90 gave a moving speech to a captivated audience. We were blessed to kick-off Black History Month with this special Mass for Diversity. It is truly in celebrating our differences we find unity in Christ.

MERCY DAY LITURGY As is the tradition at Notre Dame High School, we celebrated our annual Mercy Day Liturgy in September in honor of the Sisters of Mercy who helped establish Notre Dame in 1957. Liturgy was celebrated by our Chaplain Fr. Jason Parzynski, assisted by Deacon Rich Hobson. During Mass, members of the Executive Boards for Student Government and National Honor Society were commissioned by Principal Joanna Barlow. Student Government representatives from all grades also took an oath to serve our student body.

CATHOLIC MISSION

HOLY WEEK LITURGY The Notre Dame community was blessed to have Bishop David M. O’Connell C.M. concelebrate our school-wide Holy Week Liturgy on April 3 with our Chaplain, Fr. Jason Parzynski, assisted by Deacon Rich Hobson. This liturgy was special as we were able to witness three Notre Dame students, Gannon Herman ‘25, Merritt Long ‘26, and Isabel Urban ‘26, receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This was the culmination of their faith-filled journey as candidates in the Notre Dame’s RCIA program. RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and serves as a welcoming organization for those who desire to enter into a faith-filled community with the Catholic Church. We have been blessed to be able to implement the RCIA process and Confirmation preparation at Notre Dame High School.

FACULTY AND STAFF SPIRITUALITY DAY FOCUSED ON SERVICE "We joyfully extend our energy and resources on behalf of the poor, sick and uneducated working to relieve misery and address its causes where possible." — Mercy Core Value of Service Notre Dame faculty and staff gathered together for a Spirituality Day. Similar to the ICAN/Spirituality days for students, they heard from speakers, spent time doing community service and attended Mass together. Faculty and staff members prepared 10,152 meals for the Rise Against Hunger organization.

ICAN/SPIRITUALITY DAYS Every school year, each class has a day of spirituality and community service with their classmates. This year, students attended workshops, listened to guest speakers and completed community service projects some of which included packaging 20,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger and decorating Easter eggs for retired priests.

CONGRATULATIONS to our EAGLE SCOUTS The Notre Dame Community is proud to spotlight the following students who achieved the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America. The road to becoming an Eagle Scout is a tremendous undertaking. Requirements include earning many merit badges and completing a final community service project, including raising funds, designing and executing the project. All three of these Eagle Scouts chose projects that enhanced the Notre Dame campus. PARKER STERGION ’23 Parker knew he wanted to incorporate his faith into his project idea. He installed 14 Stations of the Cross near the ND Grotto and Rosary Walk, alongside of the pathway to Msgr. Walter E. Nolan Field. Appropriately, he completed the project during the Lenten Season. THOMAS BLACK ’23 Thomas created a sign to provide information related to the underappreciated historical site from the Revolutionary War located on Notre Dame property. Specifically, a battle that took place during the ”10 Days That Saved the War.” Thomas created this visual aid to highlight the important details of the event while also improving the surroundings of the area to make it an appealing, historical setting for all who visit. SEAN GEHERTY ’23 As a member of Notre Dame’s Cross Country Team, and both Winter and Spring Track Teams, Sean decided to choose a project that would benefit those teams, specifically Cross Country. Sean’s project entailed leading a team of 30 scouts and fellow ND runners in renovating and securing the 300 ft. boardwalk area of Notre Dame's Cross Country Course.

WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE eSports has made its way to Notre Dame! Under the supervision of team moderator, Mr. Jaime Gibilisco ’10, the Notre Dame eSports Team will be participating in two potential leagues in the winter and spring: the High School eSports National League and the Garden State eSports League. In both leagues, the potential to win scholarship money is available if teams place high enough and apply to colleges that have eSports programs. The games that we will be competing in are: Rocket League, League of Legends, Super Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Overwatch 2, Valorant, Apex Legends, and Brawlhalla, among others. eSports is a form of competition using video games. Most commonly, eSports takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players and teams. Although organized online and offline

competitions have long been a part of video game culture, these were largely between amateurs until the late 2000s, when participation by professional gamers and spectatorship in these events through live streaming saw a large surge in popularity. By the 2010s, eSports was a significant factor in the video game industry, with many game developers actively designing toward a professional eSports subculture. Participants and teams compete in seasons or tournaments similar to athletic sports, and compete for prize pools from hundreds of thousands to several million dollars. At the high school level, players generally compete for cash prizes of thousands of dollars and scholarships. Hundreds of schools now offer scholarships for eSports athletes; Harrisburg University made the news in 2018 as the first school to offer full scholarships for their entire team consisting of 16 students. The CORNERSTONE

G I F T S T H AT L A S T A L I F E T I M E

The Cornerstone Society honors donors who have pledged a planned gift to Notre Dame High School. These gifts indicate a commitment to the long-term success of the School and are generally made through bequests and trusts. Planned Gifts help ensure the long-term financial strength of the School, and help provide future generations of students with the exceptional learning experience Notre Dame students enjoy today. If you have already included Notre Dame in a bequest or other planned gift, we hope you will let us know. Your willingness to be named as a member of the Cornerstone Society inspires others to consider a similar gift. If you have an interest in learning more about the Cornerstone Society and how you can make a gift to the School that will last a lifetime, please contact Elena Caccavale in the Advancement Office @ advancement@ndnj.org.

LOCKER ROOM CAMPAIGN In August of 2021, Notre Dame began to renovate our Boys and Girls locker rooms The locker rooms, built in 1957, definitely served their purpose through the years, but the new and upgraded facility, which made its debut in September of 2022 is a dream come true. With the lead gifts from Kathleen and Michael Castellano and Jim and Tracey Fisher we were able to launch this successful campaign raising a total of $280,000 to create our brand new state-of-the-art locker rooms. Thank you to all that made this possible. Anonymous Accurate Professional Billing Inc.
