Notre Dame High School ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013

IMPACT

U

im·pact (im’pakt’) n. 1.The effect or impression of one thing on another: 2. The power of making a strong, immediate impression. U

Our Cover A drop of water, squeezed

gently from a cloud hovering above the surface of a pond on a sun-spackled day in summer, disturbs the calm of that pond and sends out waves that ripple and reach all the way to the pond’s edges. Everything in the path of those waves is impacted. Flotsam is redirected and disbursed, skater bugs and leaves bounce rhythmically up and down, and the patterns of sunlight are fractured and shattered. Somehow, the pond and all it contains is transformed and a new life is begun.

Letter from the President and Principal

Dear Friends of Notre Dame High School, “Impact” is the theme of our Annual Report this year. As life-long educators, our highest goal, like most teachers, has always been to somehow make an impact on our young people and through them, on the world. It is for this purpose that we have joined with our community to craft our comprehensive Strategic Plan for Notre Dame High School: A Road Map to Transformation. The plan is a bold one in its outlook. It seeks to strengthen our Catholic Identity and our faith development programs so that all will know and appreciate God’s love. It identifies the challenges we face in the areas of finance, enrollment and facilities, and prescribes workable and achievable solutions that assure our future. It intends to give our students the tools and the support they will need to function in the twenty-first century. It intends to disturb their complacency and their comfort by teaching them to challenge the status quo and their untested secular notions and media-induced assumptions of what is real, true and valuable. Finally, it intends that they then become that drop of water that transforms our world, unsettling its pallor, fracturing its light and impacting it to twinkle and shine brightly as God’s Kingdom on earth. As we have prepared the pages of this year’s Annual Report, we are proud of the indisputable impact that those who serve here as teachers and coaches have had on our students this year. The number of graduates attending top quality colleges, the number of those succeeding in challenging AP courses, the number of National Merit Commended students all attest to uncommon success in the realm of academics. It has been another great year for the performing and visual arts. And the three Mercer County and seven division championships our sports teams have earned confirm the ongoing strength of our athletic programs. We are proud of the transforming power our students have generated for themselves and for society. Impacted by their Kairos retreat, Christian Service and liturgical experiences, it is clear that they have become more faith-filled in their own lives and more loving and sensitized to the experiences of others. Their generosity and willingness to serve, their goodness and willingness to welcome, their indomitable spirit and willingness to share their talent, lift and inspire us and transform our world each day. And we remain proud of you, dear friends of Notre Dame High School. As the subsequent pages of this report will attest, it is your investments that have given breath to the dreams and strategies of the Strategic Plan and made possible the impact we celebrate today. Your gifts – your prayers, involvement and financial participation – are truly the treasure of your heart that you have shared to support those building the Kingdom so that others might benefit. As Paul proclaims, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.” And thanks to you for yours. You make us better. You make a difference. You make an impact.

Sincerely,

Barry Edward Breen, President

We would like to thank the many families and friends who contributed a memorial gift to Notre Dame High School in 2012-13. A gift in memory of someone you love can be a very meaningful way to contribute to Notre Dame. Memorial gifts are directed to the Annual Fund. The family may decide to designate the donations to a more specific area, for example tuition assistance, athletics or faculty development. If you would like additional information, please call the Advancement Office.

Notre Dame High School

Notre Dame is extremely proud of its faculty, staff and administrators. Their dedication, support and commitment to our students are extraordinary. We are blessed by their efforts each day. This past year, 60 ND employees contributed $22,885 to our Annual Fund Campaign – a true testament to the belief they have in ND and its advancement initiatives. We greatly appreciate their monetary contributions. For all that they continue to do in their classrooms and beyond, we say, “thank you.” Roberta Anderson Meg Apriceno Courtney Ashe Cindy Bannon Joanna Barlow Isabel Berko Deborah Berzinski Barry Breen Ann Shelly `74 Brown Kevin Callahan Julie Campo Kathy Leszczuk `80 Clemency Christopher Collier Joseph Coppola Mary Curtis Ann-Marie Delworth Ann DeMille

Join the President’s Club for 2013-2014 The President’s Club comprises members of the Notre Dame High School community who support the Annual Fund Campaign with leadership gifts at a minimum level of $1,000. Last year, President’s Club members accounted for 70% of all dollars contributed to the Annual Fund. The belief of these individuals and organizations is that by contributing at this generous amount, they are advancing the mission of Notre Dame in a significant way by making a faith-filled investment in the high school experience of our 1,300 students. The Annual Fund provides critical funding towards all areas of school life including tuition assistance, technology enhancements and expansions, facility improvements, new academic and co-curricular programs, faculty and staff development, athletic programs as well as fine and performing arts. President’s Club members will receive an exclusive Vineyard Vines custom-made silk tie or canvas wine tote, embellished with our Notre Dame logos. These items are limited to President’s Club members only. Membership will also include invitations to special events and member gatherings. The Notre Dame High School 1957 Society was established to recognize our friends who in the past have included Notre Dame in their estate plans or wills. This planned giving society will have many valuable options for the donor and NDHS. Donors may make “the gift of a lifetime,” while at the same time gain significant tax advantages. Choices available include: bequest by will (making a perpetual gift to ND), designating Notre Dame as a full or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan, or establishing a charitable remainder trust, which allows immediate tax savings to the donor. Leaving a legacy for the students of tomorrow gives you the ability to play a significant role in the development of their high school years at ND. Your tax consultant, financial advisor, or attorney can give you more detailed information about developing an estate plan or determine the planned giving option that best fits your needs. Thank you for considering “making the gift of a lifetime.”
