Point Of View ~otreDame:

a world of rushing business . . . rush in late, rush home, hurried assignments, too little time, just get it done .. . a world of loneliness . . . crowded halls and being alone, not talking to the p r who sits next to you except to ask for answers, knowing people but not being their fri d, not able to be or say what you are . ..

My feelings toward Notre Dame are mixed. I resent this school. I resent taking an individual and trying to destroy his individuality, making him one of "them." I resent having my spirit knocked out of me. I resent making trivial matters into major issues, while ignoring major things that are really so important. I resent being told, "If you don't like it, leave" and "That's your problem not ours." I resent the term papers and tests, the library work and home assignments that make me give up things I really want to do. I resent feeling as though in their" eyes I am only another source of $350. I resent the pedestals we are or aren't put on depending on the position we hold. I resent the people who have given up and don't care, and I feel sorry for those who never did. I resent the people who make an effort to make things worse instead of better. I resent the bitterness and hyprocrisy, the hardness and coldness. Yet, despite these things, I realized this year that I love Notre Dame. Not Notre Dame the building, the rules, or the courses, but Notre Dame, the people. The people who have cheered with me at foot ball games, have shared lunch periods, have understood and given a little less homework, have been interested in others, not only themselves. In general, those who have done more than just their job, whether as a student, teacher, cafeteria staffer, maintenance or whatever. And, if you really look closely, you will see that they are very plentiful at Notre Dame. Debbie Owens 11

a world of rules . . . three lates equal one detention, three detentions equal one suspension, four inches above the knee, not below the collar

a world of unspoken anxieties . . . wanting to reach out, but afraid of rejection or laughs, being cared about and not knowiing how to care back, being somebody different to live up to others' expectations, not saying what you want to ... a world of excitement . . . yelling and cheering and throwing confetti and being hoarse, laughing out loud, running, doing something bad and not being caught and still laughing ... a world of people ... cruel, kind, cold, sincere, phony, dull, interesting, insecure, confident . . . a world of potential cared about . ..

friends, learning, growing, caring, and being

a world of emotion ... fears, tears, dreams, hopes, sorrows, and frustrations . . .

When I think of the years that I've spent at N.D. -I want to cry When I think of the people I've been withI want to yell When I think of me during High School I'm smiling and happy When I think of it all together I don't know what to do Nope, it wasn't that bad. Clare Brunner

I did not ask to come to Notre Dame. In fact last year at this time spending my senior year at any place other than Cathedral High School would have been the last thing that I wanted. But a lot has happened since then. I have been accepted at Notre Dame, not as an outsider, but as a friend and fellow student. School is not just a place for academics. It is a time for sharing and growing with friends. Notre Dame has provided this setting for me. I have been taken up with the spirit of the Fighting Irish as well as the general atmosphere of the school. Although I will never forget C.H.S. a d the good times we had there, on June 3, I will be graduating with the knowledge that my life has been made richer because of my presence at .D. Anne Marie Riether

Notre Dame may not have the best facilities of all the area's high schools, the rules may seem absurd at times, but obviously a lot of kids don't mind. I like N.D. because of the kids here . . . If you don't have friends, N.D. is probably hell. If I were looking for a perfect learning atmosphere, a full range of electives, I don't think N.D. would be the place to find it. I just want a place from which I can get to college and have a good time. Good times come easy at N.D. Tom Root, Junior

notre dame taught me pressure and competitonnotre dame taught me that the greatest challenge in 'life is learning to accept oneselfand notre dame taught me growth. Anonymous Change- for good or bad is a definite fact of life about any dynamic institution and Notre Dame is no exception. It's been ten years since this author walked down the aisle to bid fond farewell to his alma mater, and reflecting over the past ten years one can see many changes at Notre Dame. The building is a little older, or gaining character; the style of dress has changed; there are a lot more lay teachers than before, and one can list numerous superficial contrasts between Notre Dame of '63 and '73, but when you get down to the basics, that intensive thing, the spirit of Notore Dame, I don't feel that it has really changed, but rather adapted itself to new times. Maybe the students are a bit more sophisticated than they were a decade ago, but I think deep inside they will find that their short stay at Notre Dame was one of the best times of their lives, but maybe they won't realize this until they reflect back ten years from now. Mr. Joseph Wroblewski Class of '63

Notre Dame has been my school for almost thirteen years. I have a strong affection for it and its students have been good to me. I cannot imagine now not having a share in the life of the students of Notre Dame, no matter how vicarious. My life is interwoven with their successes and failures, heir hopes, and despairs. I have the greatest respect for today's students. Their potential is tremendous; their responsiblities to the future of their community, so demanding. In my opinion they will meet the challenge of the future more than adequately. They are so much more concerned about their fellow-man and about the welfare of those around them than I was at high school age. They are earnest individuals with a flair for the humorous and boisterous, grown-up children in a world which promises no stable future. I admire the students of Notre Dame and respect their opinions. This year has been a limbo, in my opinion, as far as the academic life of the school is concerned. It has been e tremely difficult to get students to participate in extra-curricular activities because of the split sessions. The school as a whole, has not been unified, and students have not had the singleness of purpose about school work. Assemblies and pep rallies are well-ordered and comparatively quiet. I miss the camaraderie and potential Saturday detentions of a full-school meeting. Lest this seem like a paid advertisement, I admit that there are weaknesses in our program as there are in all organized activities, but like an old die-hard Mets fan, I have to confess that I think Notre Dame offers a superior educational program to a ''superior" group of students, who inevitably measure up to expectations when the "chips are down." The number of students who give extra time to school affairs and the number of teachers who are always on hand to help and encourage the students give testimony to this. I am happy that Notre Dame has been such a fulfilling part of my life in the past few years. Mrs. Mary Palenchar

About last year. When I was here. At Notre Dame. Fun? Lots. Hard? Definitely. Time consuming? My whole life ... practically. Warm? Sometimes. Cold? Too often. Would I do it again? Without question. "You don't know what you've got 'til its gone." Is that how the song goes? But if you,did the most with it when you had it, then you don't lose at all. You win. I won. Notre Dame is still with me and within me. When I've stopped living it, I've lost. And time goes on, there's no returning. But at least I've been there. Notre Dame is still with me because I decided to take it along. Meredith Esposito Class of '72

THE WIRE FENCE The wires are holding hands around the holes; To avoid breaking the ring, they hold tight the neighboring wrist, And it's thus that with holes they make a fence.

Lord, there are lots of holes in my life. There are some in the lives of my neighbors. But if you wish, we shall hold hands, We shall hold very tight, And together we shall make a fine roll of fence to adorn Paradise. Michel Quoist PRAYERS
