CANTICLE '82 Notre Dame High School

601 Lawrence Road

Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Voluflle XXII

Dedication

As freshmen we feared him; his posmon was not very appealing to us. Don't do this or that or you would be called to his office and later you would see him at detention. In our sophomore year, we still had a touch of fear; do this or that still meant detention. Questions about him still entered our minds. Juniors with only one year to go, we were very confused about his position; he still enforced discipline, yet we noticed his funny jokes, his multi-colored socks, his kindly advice. In our last year, seniors at last!, he had changed! He had seen us grow up and mature; he was our guide away from home. As seniors we not only came to know the many dimensions of this man with the impossible job, but we came to appreciate and respect him as well! We took great pleasure in fondly dedicating the 1982 CANTICLE to Mr. Albert Verdel.

When we turned around and looked at our tracks in the snow . . . some looked strange, but look where we were headed .. we kept going . .. what should we do tomorrow? Who would we be? Into Fall Sports

The sounds of chanting, cheers, and laughter carry from the classrooms. People whiz by, making final preparations and watching for the judges. The band plays the victory march over and over. The pep rally is so loud you wonder why the roof doesn't lift off. This is the fuss and fun of Blue and White Day. Blue and White Day is when we at N.D. show our spirit of togetherness and of friendly competition. In the morning homerooms compete for the best decorated and most spirited; in the afternoon during the pep rally, class levels compete in cheering and in tugs-of-war; after school we unite in spirit and competition as we meet Trenton in our traditional football clash. Blue and White Day makes us stronger as a school, gives us confidence, and keeps our spirit of togetherness alive. D anielle Lettiere

Irish Pride Sparks From the beginning of freshman year, the team was told about pride ... Irish Pride! Mid-way through the year the Iri h stood 1-4. With the guidaI!ce of Mr. C. Moore and the devotion of the N.D. squad, a turnaround came. The '81 season became a winning one as the Fighting Irish posted a 5 -4 record. The scrappers earned their reputation as a hard hitting, tough, young defense. The offense, both "SaturdaY's heroes" and "the proud , the few , the O-line," pulled together to put the points on the board. A the seniors graduated and the other team members prepared for next year, Irish Pride remained the tradition of N.D.'s football team . Brian Bralynski

I Follow the bouncing ball

After last year's winning season, Coach Mike Perone welcomed returning lettermen in expectation of improving 1980's 12 -8- 3 log. The Irish opened up the '81 campaign by reeling off five impressive victories which set the pace for the remainder of the season. Although at times the Irish lacked consistency, the N.D. booters were a mainstay in the Mercer County Loop, as runners-up in the CVC race. Misfortune plagued the Irish Eleven, as injuries felled several key players and sidelined Irish mentor Mr. Perone. Nevertheless, the Irish waltzed through their first victim of the state tourney, Camden Catholic, with a 5-0 whitewash. However, their season was rudely interrupted as they suffered a 3-2 loss at the hands of an outplayed Christian Brothers squad in the semi -finals. Overall, the booters finished 14 - 7, thus epitomizing the valiant, Fighting Irish spirit, both on and off the pitch.

Hustle, Hustle, Score! Determination, discipline, and sacrifice were again the first steps to a successful season for the soccer team. Next came the drills, the drills, the drills - strategy, team work, more drills. Occasionally there was frustration; always there was fatigue; at times, there were thwarted expectations and a step back, but in the end, the 1981 Girls Varsity Soccer team had one of its best years. It had the best offense with 82 goals and ,56 assists, and the defense allowed only 32 goals. Goalie Christina Fritz, who recorded five shutouts, Kirsten Veale and Kristina Veale made First Team All-County. Sandy Mahon was second leading scorer with 45 goals in three seasons to Vicki Hebeler's 69 goals. The team rook second place in the Colonial Valley Conference and made the semi -finals of the Mercer County Tournament. They went on to the second round of state play against top-seeded Delran, ro whom they lost a tough 2-3 decision in double overtime. Through fulfillment and frustration, this unique experience created deep friendships among players and players and coach. Coach Sandy Koschek kept the Wenches wailing and winning! N. D. Dollies DOfllinate N.D.'s Field Hockey team started out the season with a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross. The DoVies defeated Princeton at Princeton for the first time in N.D. history and then went on to beat them two more times, once at home and the third time in the semifinals of the Mercer County Tournament. Eleven returning senior lettermen helped the team to victory with their spirit and enthusiasm as they initiated six new varsity members to the team. Known as the 'Jekyll and Hyde" team in midseason, they ended the season with a victory over Ewing. Kris Joy and Donna Tursi were the team's leading scorers with nine goals each, and Cheryl Nerwinski tied N .D.'s previous record holder Pam Costigan ('80) with twelve assists. Though the loss of those eleven seniors may seem like a lot, as Coach Barbara Major put it, "It will just require a period of adjustment" for the Dollies. Laurie Holsneck & Anita Huslin

School Steps The early years at N.D. provide a strong foundation for N.D. students to grow. From September to June, the students demonstrate personal dedication and willing sacrifice by accepting each new challenge given them in their classes. On each level, courses are offered which meet the students' needs and encourage them to develop their abilities and responsibilities. Step by step, with greater knowledge come greater confidence and enthusiasm. As time passes, the example of our teachers and the richness of our friendships with our fellow students help us grow in dimensiol}. The burden of each new challenge, each new goal set, is lightened by our physical, spiritual, mental, emotional maturing. Ambition forces us to struggle to grasp all the kn~wledge and to achieve all the personal growth which are possible at N.D .. Tracy Cicco

Side Steps Pacing is an essential step in finding and using one's inner talents and abilities. It is also essential to keeping one's sanity and not ttrigging out" with a mere mile to go. There are those souls, nevertheless, with seemingly endless stamina who take part in many different activities, such as, student government, theater productions, musical presentations, athletics, Koininia, the National Honor Society, the school literary publications, photography, Forum and Debate, just to name a few. For these people, there is no such thing as tttunnel vision." They veer off in various directions and add colorful dimensions to an otherwise predictable school day. In order to grow socially as well as academically and mentally, N.D. students take part in extracurricular activities which serve as catalysts for their growth. There are numerous opportunities for involvement at N.D., and N.D. students make use of them and thereby open themselves to new enriching experiences. Kristina Veale

This year, the fall of '81 was a special one. With the Middle States Evaluation closing in, the fall became a fury of activity among the faculty, students, and the maintenance staff. When Middle States finally arrived in the early part of November, the tension was heavy as each aspet of N.D. life was evaluated. Notre Dame faired very well according to the report that was given to Father Hughes and the faculty. The Harvest Moon Ball was an appropriate end to a busy autumn. The affair was put on by the Band Parents and held in the school q.feteria. Dinner and dancing were the main part of the evening's agenda. With the presence of colder weather and snow, N .D. found itself caught up in the excitement of the Christmas holidays. As soon as the joy of the season took hold, N.D.'s Christmas tree was put up in the main foyer. With the help of Mr. Butler and the Key Club, N.D. was alive with Christmas spirit. The class levels did their part to spread the holiday spirit by collecting money and presenting various organizations and groups with donations and gifts. The Christmas Cotillion was once again an important part of Christmas. Students attended an evening of dinner and dancing.

N.D.'s clubs are numerous and varied; they range from athletics to chess to dungeons & dragons to honors to literary publications to service to varsity letters. They offer the students many ways to use their talents and ideas to benefit not only the school and the community but themselves as well. The clubs are often u ed to allow opportunities for scientific experiments outside of the classroom as in the Science in Life club, for community service through many of the clubs such as the Koinonia Club, and to channel innovative ideas such as through the Drama club. Often, the members play host to guest speakers from the worlds of business, journalism, and the arts. Clubs offer another necessary dimension for expression and growth to N.D. students.

A salute to N.D.

The 1981-82 Marching Band, Color Guard , and Drill Team were certain1y kept busy, participating' in competitions, the Bo nfire , and o f course, the fo otball games. They began learning their drills in August in the Band Camp, and were busy most afternoons after school perfecting th eir ro utines. They marched for events from Blue and White Day throug h H o meco ming , and they impressed both the audiences and the judges in competitio ns from which they came away with a ' First Prize and two Third Prizes. The dedication and the hard work of the students, Band Parents, Drum Maj o r Lugene Kennebrew, and Band DirectOr Mr.Joseph Biancosino, have resulted in much enjoyment, recognition, awards , and school respect. Every year's graduating class takes with it many valuable members, but the talent keeps coming in, and we are certain that the Band, Drill Team, and Color Guard are sure to be even better next year. Top Steps Setting the pace for us and helping us keep our stride are the administration and faculty of N.D. From the time we enter as freshmen until we graduate, they are there to set us on the right road, to guide us along the way, to help us when we stumble, and to turn us back in the right direction if we should lose our way. With love, kindness, sternness, and authority, they are our guardians throughout our years as students at N.D ..

Guiding

The banners around the altar read "For His Mercy Endures Forever," "Different Ministeries but the Same Lord," "Different Gifts but the Same Spirit, and "Happy Are We Who Love His Ministry." They added up to a love story between God and the Sisters of Mercy and to a life given freely to doing God's will without counting the cost. For 150 years the "Mercies" have communicated wisdom and knowledge, set an example freely and recognizably, and have led prayerful lives. In 1981 on their Sesquecentennial celebration, they used as their theme "Renewing a Service of Mercy. " Helen Keller said that "life is an exciting business and most exciting when it is lived for others." The Sisters of Mercy translated this into "My Legacy to the Community is Charity." Anita Huslin

Thoughts to carry with you as you walk life's paths. With each step I take ... DREAMS FILL MY THOUGHTS Dreams of castles in the sky, Dreams of love that never dies, Dreams of adventures that forge heroes, Dreams of power that transforms nations. With each step I take ... EMOTIONS STREW MY PATH Fear humbles my every move; Hope calls me to take a chance; Sadness allows me to reach my inner self; Love frees me to reach out and touch someone. With each step I take ... FRIENDS SUSTAIN MY FRAGILE LIFE Close to me, friends listen to my every word; Far from me, their thoughts sustain me. In joy, their presence excuses me; In sorrow, their presence heals me. With each step I take ... EXPERIENCE IS MY INSTRUCTOR Each year expands my understanding of life. Each day brings new dimension to people. Each event causes time to move on. Each person helps me grow as he shares himself. With each step I take ... DIFFICULTIES SHADOW MY QUEST FOR SUCCESS Hard times uncover my need for strength; Burdensome tasks coerce me into taking oine more step. A wesome challenges teach me the art of good planning Tackling the unknown often builds heroes. With each step I take ... LET EVERY MAN SEE ME AS UNIQUE Let my mind perceive in a way no man perceives; Let my heart which can love - but a secret few. Let my eyes see beauty in what they behold. Let my strength lie in the conviction I possess. With each step I take ... LET HAPPINESS BE MY TREASURE A smile can be a gift untold; A laugh permeates the heart that shares; A peace that comes from silence is precious; A joy in one's presence attracts others. With each step I take ... LET GOD EMBRACE ME His presence affords wonder His message brings meaning to life His power generates power His love conquers all. May God walk with you and embrace you.

Setting The Pace By definition teachers "give knowledge, lessons in, or instruction about." The N.D. faculty gives much more - of themselves. They give their time and talents as moderators of our many clu bs, chairmen of different departments, coaches of various athletic teams. Their day doesn't end at the final bell, nor does their concern for our welfare and success. They want us to do well and help us to do the best that we possibly can in any of our endeavors - in school and extra-curricular. They give of their knowledge; they give us lessons in life, and they instruct us in being the best that we can be. Kirsten Veale

In Fond Renlenl brance Reverend Father John D'Onofrio

Some people knew him as a teacher, some as a coach, and some as a priest, but many more of us knew him as a special friend. In the short, precious time that we knew him, we thought of him as a man of character, personality, and kind understanding. Not only did Father John treat us as if we were his children, but he understood us, he stood by us, and he loved us as we loved him. Father John was also unique in many other ways. He lived his calling as a priest, yet he was an individualist.

Also, even though he was a man of great intellect, he was never too quick to speak or judge us from his own superior knowledge. Instead, he taught us and then gave us a personal point-of-view. We at Notre Dame feel that we have lost not just a man, but that we have lost our priest, our teacher, our coach, and most especially, we have lost our special friend.

Angel Mariano

93

Stepping Out Mrs. Mary Palenchar looked back on twenty -two years of teaching, and, some of that time, of being Chairperson of the Language Department. When a woman gives a good part of a lifetime to us, we must stop, take notice, and ... remember how for us she has been aunt, stand-up comic, diplomat, singer, guide, dancer, friend, and, most important, teacher. We must recognize how lucky we were to have been among her students, to have known her, to have benefited from her knowledge, and, even more, from her wisdom. Our N.D. community has had, in Mrs. Palenchar, the epitome of scholarship and culture. She is multilingual, widely traveled, and an invaluable source of knowledge on European culture and tradition. She has been blessed with an infectious wit, vigor, and ageless youthfulness to the enrichment of N.D. Mrs. Palenchar has our gratitude, love, and appreciation, and we treasure her special gift - a better understanding of the word . . . teacher. Anna Bevilacqua & Coleman O'Donovan

She's "Number One" with N.D.'s Gang too!

Mrs. Palenchar works on pronunciation.

Now comes the paper work.

94

But Not Forgotten Father Walter J. Nolan was chaplain at N.D. for ten years. As chaplain, he made Mass very special for us. His homilies always left us with some bit of practical wisdom that we could apply to life. Father Nolan was also involved in many activities. He was especially proud to be Athletic Moderator and he gave a lot of himself to that job too. He ran the Flea Market; he encouraged the parents of the athletes to form a Parents' Club; he worked to get lights for the football field so that we could play night games, and with the help of the parents he got them. He encouraged the teams to do their very best, and they loved his support. Most important of all, Father Nolan was our friend. He listened to us and counseled us, and we all knew that when we needed a friend , he was always there. Susan Keirn

Stepping Stones For three years the underclassmen work to get in step for their senior year. As freshmen they wander the halls looking for their classes, getting lost, thoroughly confused. As sophomores they know their way around and love having someone to whom they feel superior. As juniors N.D. students no longer worry about being babies. Instead, they worry about PSAT's, Junior Ring Day, the Junior Prom, and other such important things. Put these three groups together - wanderers, strutters, and pace setters and you have the underclassmen of N.D .. Anita Huslin

Stepping up with the class of '85.

Standing on our own two feet Thinking of our past experiences Enjoying the present but Prepared to take a Step toward the future. Carleen Fritz

For me the biggest step was from elementary school to high school. My freshman year at N.D. has been a good experience. I have met many new people and made some very good friends . I hope that the rest of my years at N.D. will be as successful and rewarding as my first one. Arlene Gutierrez

The course of life has many steps N .D.H.S. is one of the more important. Susan Joy Eagerly awaiting the next step that leads to where? The next step, more struggle, more work, and the glorious feeling of completing a new challenge. Kim McNamara The end of my freshman year!! I've reached some of my goals, but there are others ahead on my life's journey. Agatha Dzikiewicz Freshman year was a big step in life. Feelings and outlooks on life changed, while you grew and matured from your experiences. Lauren Baier

Being a Freshman it's tough it's humiliating it's hard it's degrading it's awful it's crazy it's GREAT! Kathv Lund

The good times you remember The bad ones you forget The decisions you like And the ones you regret Are all part of life and Especially, freshman year; If you really want what you're aiming for My friend, you have nothing to fear. Craig Sost

If you ever are frustrated because of schoolwork, just think of each of the four years in high school as stones in a stream, each of which must be stepped on to make it to the other side. At times you may slip, but if you believe, you can regain your balance. Hopefully, the N.D. step is a surefooted step for the class of '85. Kurt Horendza

Freshman's lament to N.D.'s upperclassmen: Remember when you were a freshman! Everyone, please stop calling us the "little" freshmen; Show some appreciation for our support, Help us to do things for our class; Make our freshman year fun not frightening, And, last but not least, Stop Nagging us about being the littlest in the school. Beth Mosner

Becoming a freshman was one of many steps that I must take. Now it's behind me and it's one less step for me to take. I have just seven more steps (years) to go until I reach my goals. Thomas Braun

S - is for the subjects we must struggle through T - for the troubles that trip us and cause us to stumble E - is the effort that we make to survive, and P - for the people who help us keep our stride. U - is for our uniqueness, and P - is four our pirde in our class of '85. Bridget McLaughlin

I was a freshman this year. I enjoyed meeting people from different areas and making new friends. I feel that I've become more responsible and independent. At the same time, I'm enjoying high school and all of its activities. The N.D. spirit makes it fun to be a freshman here. Barbara Sosna New ways of Doing things; taking Steps leading Toward our future Everyone working, Plodding determinedly; Striving to read their goals. Linda Y<'>sua

One in a million N ever the same Everyday - -reaching Full of hope Relishing the moments Eager to learn Shy and inept Human and Marveling at life Always enthusiastic Now moving on Striving for perfection Time to advance Ever ready to Pursue the rest of life. Denise Cochran

The step from class to class, The step from day to day, The step from grade to grade, is taken the same old way. Whichever step you're taking, no matter how large or small, It's a shorter step for you than it is for freshmen . Yet, to paraphrase what a famous former freshman said: "A small step for a freshman , a large step for mankind ." Susan Heller

Contrary to popular belief, Freshman are people too! One day, if we're good and eat our vegetables, we'll grow up to be seniors. Joellynn Monahan

I travel through the years Just as I travel on this road . I follow the road carefully So that I don't lose my way. Each time I come to a crossroads, I must decide which road to follow. At times I take the wrong road, But I go back and go the right way. This road is my life, this road I follow. I do make the wrong decisions, But each time, I learn from my mistakes. As each milestone passes, I am a mile closer to my goal. Daphne Tams

Being new and fresh, we were open to a lot of taunting and hurt. I think that perhaps this was because upperclassmen felt threatened; they knew someday they'd be replaced. The steps we took as freshmen and those we'll take the next three years will sometimes be large, at other times - small and timid, but they'll always go forward. Marita Sciarrotta

Throughout these high school years, the failures we encounter, the trials we endure, the joys we experience, the contentment in our accomplishments, are all mere steps on the ladder to our destiny. Janet Cieslin

Start using your Talents, freshmen. Every time that you Put your best foot forward , you take a Step ahead . Valerie Baker

As freshmen, we've been on the bottom rung of the ladder. We're not the freshmen we were in September, however; we're now a step above; we have a feeling of belonging to N.D. We're making our way up the ladder and on to sophomore year. Carmel O'Donovan

As a freshman , I have already taken many steps. The first steps I took were through the doors of N .D. My second steps were getting to know my teachers and the school. My third step was making friends. My last was working toward my goals to keep the friends I've made, get good grades, and not leave N.D. until I'm satisfied with myself. Carol Trippa

Time is ticking away as we are getting older. Our time has come to grow. Yesterday is but a mem0ry .... Good or bad, it's whatever we made of it. Eric Veale

Starting out was kind of hard Trying to fit in Everyone is totally different Picking new friends was fun Piled up homework - Wow! It's strange to be here, yet Now everything's turned out great Growing up is really fun ... Under pressure we're really shy Picking N.D. was the best choice. Karen Grussler

Taking a giant step means going from grammar school to high school. Many changes are happening around me and within me, my freshman year. I've more responsibilities, new teachers, new friends, new surroundings, and new goals in life. High school is a giant step in my life. Peter Kusenko

Freshman year was a happy one; we met new people and made friends (and enemies); explored new areas of life, new ways of thinking. We became acquainted with ourselves. It was a learning year. Susan Francis Take a step forward in the right direction; and with just one step at a time you'll make it. Diane Kra wczun Being a freshman was a big step. It was time to pace ourselves for the coming years so that we could be what we want to be and the best at that. Lisa Haller

Fighting to be accepted. Reaching out to touch someone Exhilirating our "elders" with our Strong School Spirit. Hoping for success in years to come Moving towards our goals Accomplishing the impossible Now we know we're Number One! Kristina Muchleisen

As Freshmen, we come into N.D. confused and caught off guard by the commotion of a new school; a new people, and a new environment. But with each new day, we grew with new knowledge, new friends, and in this new environment. In our growth, we made greater strides toward our destinies, our goals in life. For each one of us, our goals may take on risks~ and for this reason, we must reach out and strive to do the best we can. Many times we'll fail, but it'll give us more incentive to succeed. This is a goal to strive for in the years to come and the next challenge to succeed at is our sophomore year. Mark Grygon

First Steps Toward '85

This year the Class of 1985, surpassed all the levels, plus all past Freshmen classes, in the magazine drive. The race for the highest homeroom was a close one, with Mr. Bill Romano 's 9A competing closely with Mrs. Alice Goldsteirn's 9]. The contest was won by Mrs. Goldstein's homeroom with over $1500 in subscriptions. Mrs. Goldstein's homeroom has a knack for winning; 9J also won the Blue and White Day door decorating contest. Christmas was a time for giving and our Freshmen at N.D. really know how to do it right. They collected $175 among the homerooms and donated all the money to Anchor House. Along with the giving spirit, the class of '85 has just plain spirit. Their spirit came forth during spirit week. Their theme was "we got the beat"; the outfits were new wave and punk styles. The best costume was judged at Freshman lunch. The Class of '85 was a spirited addition to N.D.

Moving, always moving; adults telling you to progress and don't look back. Everyone is carried along into the mainstream by the same current. We look towards vacation and end of the year and finally to that day so long awaited: Graduation. Then we are told, look beyond that into the world. Look ahead, plan ahead and take great strides to find your place. Find a job, go to college and press On toward the final goal of being able to look back, see what you've done, and move on again.

I'm a sophomore this year at N.D., and I'm new. Last year I went to Stuart Country Day School and I find that I have experienced much more here than I ever did at Stuart. I am very glad I made this change because here I can relate more to others and to my academics.

Each person has a dream, a goal, something they wish to succeed in, but we have only begun to "tryon our dreams", and there are still many more to be explored. I wish for me, as well as for others, that each step I take in life, I can come closer to that dream, and reach a level of success.

Recipe For a Sophomore Directions: 1 cup of love, (add more to taste); a pinch of intelligence makes no waste; 2 dashes of spirit and 1 teaspoon of cheer with a drop of anticipation for our junior year; 1 gallon of memories of the times we have had' fold i~ the good times, sift out the bad. Result: With these ingredients, a sophomore is complete. Now, you have admit, we sophomores are a treat.

Mary Suro Always changing, moving down that long, mysterious path; where will it take us? We're not sure. As sophomores we have just begun to walk that path. We are full of hopes and dreams that someday may become real. As we move on we will meet different challenges, see new faces and understand things we never did before. We may look back at what used to be but we will always be looking ahead to what is to come.

Anna Lieggi

As a member of the sophoIT\ore class, building a ladder to the top of success, I always strive for superiority. Future ambitions, moral judgments, and education play an important role in what I firmly believe. As a student at Notre Dame, I believe that dedication, self-confidence, and hard work will carry me/my class to the top.

As I walk down the corridor of life, I see a door in the distance. The door has 'Junior" written on it. I look back and see a door with "Sophomore" written on it. I want to run back and open the "Sophomore" door, but something is pulling me to the other. I open the 'Junior" door and realize why I chose this one. I see a new school year with challenges to overcome and goals to be reached.

I feel that as a sophomore, we are growing experienced in many different things. We are no longer the youngest, but yet we're not too close to the oldest. Our feelings start to change, and we start to see the world as better or worse. N.D. helps us with those views, and with its help we have a better chance of seeing the good and not the evil.

Carol Serock

Cyndi Gilleo

Teresa Pizzuti

Fiona Curtain

Although we feel we are grown up we aren't. We shouldn't rush things through. This is our one and only chance to be silly and crazy and get away with it. Time goes so quickly and there's too much time spent worrying about everything. We're only sophomores and even though we've come a long way, we've got a long way to go. Let's be silly and have the best time of our lives while we still can.

Tim Bp.rryman

Was it yesterday we started here? We looked at the years behind us and the years ahead of us. We thought we were right in the middle of nowhere forever behind us and fo~ever ahead of us. Then our first year was over, and all of a sudden it was as if life was going too fast. We have some idea of where we're going. Each of us, in our own way, look forward to our remaining years left with a new outlook, thanks to the time we've already spent here.

At the end of the year, looking toward the next, I say to myself, "Good, now I'm one step ahead, going up!". But how do you really get one step ahead in life? I may say the same thing every year, every month, or every day, but I can't figure out what I'm stepping toward, what r m nearing, and what good it will do me. Just the same, I keep on going, struggling' just to see what's at the end of a long and winding road.

As sophomores we've only just begun to climb the ladder of success at N.D. We're moving on to bigger and better things and taking on more responsibilities. Taking another step along the way surely and carefully, we gain more confidence and independence; we stride to reach our goals in life, taking it slowly. With Notre Dame guiding our steps, we'll reach our goals in no time.

Seeing new ideas Outgoing in sports Patient in achieving our goals Having difficulty with work Outstanding in spirit Making decisions On top of everything Reaching out for help Encouraging to the freshmen Surviving so far

Coming to N.D. was a great step in my life. It consists of a combination of four steps. I have already taken the first two, which are ending my freshman year and beginning my sophomore year. Now I have two more. I know they will be tough, but I'm strong. The fact that my ladder is at N.D. makes my struggle even lighter.

Diane Miller

Kara O'Donnell am unable to pinpoint the way that I feel or realize the difference between dreams and what is real. My questions have been answered. It's the answers that I question and the feelings and emotions I've shown! It's just a stage I'm going through, or perhaps I have more growing up to do.

Beth McManimon

The class of 1984 is really on the move. They made it through a trying freshman year, and survived the conflicts of sophomore year. With Mrs. Mary Ivins as moderator, this year they began to establish themselves as a group that does everything together, through good times and bad . Their class spirit and activities soared to great heights and was seen in their pep rallies, attendance at dances, the candy drive , and spirit day. This year they stood out amoungst the one thousand other students at ND with their "Go For More in '84" t-shirts; at the same time they established their slogan and symbol. At the end of sophomore year as the class that will "go for more," they prepared to meet new challenges and face new problems, taking everything in their stride. Suzanne Foster

Being in the Junior class at Notre Dame is like being a step ahead and above everyone else. With only one more year to go, we'U make it the best ever. I thought this year was the best and I'm going to try to make next year even better. Tom Glock

The Junior class is pacing forward to our final step.

Although we have more to go we can now look back and say that at least we made it this far. The road to success is not easy bu.& with faith in ourselves in what we do we will make it. We don't know everything and I dou bt if we ever will, but we are young and can make the world better. Sonya Boatwright

Tim e marches forward as the steady flow of events, the stream of my self rushes toward the open sea of the real world . At times my life seems slow. Flat land and uninteresting terrain nearly stop my pace, yet the hope of the sea and the compelling force draw me ever onward. I pass between mountains, which lengthens my path, discouraged with sadness and failure. Over the years, the days, and the minutes my stream widens joined by parallel streams of knowledge and learning which quickens my pace and builds my momentum. At times I feel I can not be stopped but there are always mountains. Just once, I wish I could see the coming terrain, rise above the river, see my direction and my obstacles - see the essence of the sea which is beyond the hills. I cannot be stopped. Happiness is a great reward. Eric Heitzman

The past three years with the friends you have made You shared the tealS but the smiles can not fade. Strange as it maybe in the three years gone by we have changed more than we see and we never had to try. The future years will hold many more steps; we must leap stories to be told and new friends to keep. Tonia Wronski

We must look forward; it can be done if we try. We will succeed, but it demands time and patience. Rob Lyons

On setting out upon our High School trek, the final goal in mind was Senior year. Closer now, is not yet in sight a break? Our hopes in dou bt, the end is nor so near. The steps go up as far as we can see, yet looking back our gait has been quite swift. Even so welcome would be the escalator's lift. Joseph Nolan

Nothing compares to Our times here Though at times we wish we were home Rather than at school we know that we make Each other's day brighter and cheerful. During the years we have all felt A loss but we know that we can Make it through with the help and Endurance of our friends to pull through. Lance Brown

Looking back at the times which have passed I sometimes wonder if it has all happened to me. Knowing the unexpected can become reality widens my view for the future. I can't say that everything has gone right, but trying your best and learning from faults makes the future seem better and easier to acquire. Hopefully what I see now is the good that is soon to be my happy memories. Stephanie Souza.

As a Freshman, I' looked at life as a dark road, not knowing where I was going. As a Sophomore , I began to understand why the road was dark. Now as a Junior, the dark road lightens with dawning light. I know where I'm at but not sure where I'm going. Soon I will be a Senior and I will understand where I'm at, where I've been, and where I'm going. Walt Pullen

Thanks, Seniors, for making your mark. Thanks, Sophomores, for showing me where I've been. Don't worry Freshman, for you've shown me where I started and God Bless the Juniors- for they showed me where I am. Juditra Burgess Striving Towards Everything The Class of Possible '83! Successfully? Jane Mihalko

Being a Junior at Notre Dame is a time to experience the joys of being part of the Notre Dame community. It is a time when we reflect on the past, on the memories we will always cherish, and the good times yet to come. It is a time to reflect on our maturity and the people who helped us grow. The future for us is scary. Before we know it our lives at N.D. will end. We will challenge the future with goals to attain, yet we will always take time to reflect on our experiences at Notre Dame. Lisa Tomlin

Junior year is an extremely special one; it was time for working and a time for fun. A time for us to be one year smarter, one year wiser, and one year more mature, as we grow and discover who we really are. We made plans, dreamed, and now we look forward to our Senior year. This Junior year is one to be remembered and cherished , and for all of us it is one that will not be forgotten. We always consider it one of the best years of our lives. Cathy Seidenglanz

The steps are high, bllt wide and filled with opportunity. We think we will never reach step #83, but eventually we do. As we climb up the steps, ever reaching for a dream, we encounter new experiences, we meet new people, we grow. Sometimes we fall down some steps, but we pick ourselves up and begin to climb again. Soon we will reach step #83, only to start to climb a new stairway more challenging than the first. Carlene Jaruszewski Entering new territory, discovering the inevitable path of life. Sometimes falling behind the rest but always trying to do my best to survive. Stumbling over rocks set in my way yet friends and family will lead me to the day of graduation. Too soon we've reached this trail's end only to find a new one begins. Rosemarie Piconf.

Time! Time! Everybody wishes they had more. You wish that time would stand still when you 're having fun. You wish it would fly when you feel down. But in reality, time goes on and on and on. Our lives are short and we must make the best of it. Anthony Valenzuela

Life always seems to add a higher step to take on the ladder of success as we get older. I look forward to the time when I have finished my uphill battle and can just glide on the accomplishments I have taken the time to conquer. Sue Sellers They tell me just what life's about and I listen to what they say. To laugh, to love, to live, and sing, oh yes, even to cry, these simple gifts of wisdom I will treasure 'till I die. Caryn Bralynski

I've been here at N.D. almost three years. The time I spent in the books, some people just overlooked. But to me the time was spent well. So listen to what I have to say, school days are the best days of your lives. Eugene Keegan

Who are these extraordinary peopie? They are the ones who have made it as Freshman with uncertainty, as Sophomores with ease and finally mad<.: it through as Juniors with joy. As we move through our Junior year; we learn to overcome the obstacles which cause us to stumble. The small ones we walk over with ease and never think twice about the ones which seem impossible. We strive until we break through and then we move on. Ron Kopec

Forging ahead into Unknown Territory Utilizing your learned skills and Resources to Enhance life in the years to come Cyndy Iwan

Our years here are almost done; all were full of work and fun. People caring, sharing, showing all the things we need for growing. We all grew up so very fast but we won't forget the happy past. Lisa Cipriano

Three years have passed and here we are; how can things be so close yet seem so far? As Freshman we were scared and afraid to be shown. As Sophomores we were crazy, and a little closer we had grown. And now Junior year is behind us, and what is ahead we don't know. We're coming back as Seniors, just one more year to go. But in our memories we will remember all that we've shared - the laughter, the tears, and the people that have cared. So look ahead to the future, but don't forget the past. One Step Away The year for the Class of '83 began on September 9, with the Junior class orientation. The officers put together a slide presentation to get psyched for the year ahead. Moving on to November was the Middle States Evaluation. For three days we showed the committee the pride we have in our school and will continue to have. In November, the Junior class sponsored a night at the movies, following the bonfire on November 25; the movie shown was "Young Frankenstein." It was a night of spirit and fun for the Junior class. December 17, was the date of one of the most special days in the Junior year. Ring Day. The Ring Day ceremonies included a special liturgy, the distribution of rings, and a small reception in the dining hall. Ring turning and good wishes ended the day. Then the Juniors turned their attention to candy canes. The proceeds from the sale of candy canes went to Anchor House,]anuary's redeeming quality was the ski trip after mid-terms. Junior Spirit Day was February 2; its theme was "Spirit of the Sixties." Many free-spiriters came dressed in the fashions of the sixties. There were contests for the best, and a dance contest was held. Music was provided by a band from the Junior class. Also in February, the Junior class sold carnations for Valentine's Day to remember that "special someone." April marked another special occasion, the Junior Prom, which was held at Angeloni's on April 30. Music was by Dephyr and it was another time for memories. Finally, June 1, marked the closing of our year as Juniors. Our last activity was a class picnic for the best class at N .D . Anne Marie Sagarese

Last Steps Seniors at last! We climbed to the top of the ladder. It was not always easy trying to get there. Some of the steps were slippery, but we tried to keep on our feet. As freshmen we climbed with the enthusiasm of pioneers. Then as sophomores and as juniors, we sometimes skipped steps, even tripped over a few. Finally, we reached the top - we were seniors! We looked around and thanked God that we were not afraid of heights. We looked up to sight a new goal and began our next ascent . .. step by step. Anne Flynn

Stepping Through In '82 .The Class of 1982 looked back on all the steps we took in our years at N.D. Freshman year we had the first car wash, then our class trip to Great Adventure. We stepped into our sophomore year with relief - we were no longer freshman. We had a successful volleyball night and a class picnic in the grove. We jumped into Junior year - finally upperclassman! First we tackled the PSAT's, then we had our Ring Day, Our Junior Prom, and another trip to Great Adventure. Senior year we didn 't walk, we ran! Everyone was excited; we were finall y at the top of the steps! We had our last Blue and White Day, the Senior Halloween party, and took the dreaded SAT's. We cheered at the Homecoming game, and took a ski trip to Bolton Valley. We had a Senior Valentine Party and waited for our college acceptences. They finally came. With only a few months to go, we couldn't wait for our class trip to Florida. When it came, it was over too fast! We took our final exams; patiently went though graduation practice, our Senior Night, our Baccalaureate Mass, and finally reached our final step - Graduation. We could only look back and wish that it had gone a little slower!

The taciturn thief stands before us, yet steals away unnoticed. His hands conceal his face; each punctual finger signals out a wealth of fleeing opportunity ... but he has no heart. He is an unrepentant murderer ... an ally of hesitation ... a fickle liar. Undeterred, his silent scythe mows us down in one fell swoop.

Coleman O'Donovan Being a senior means leaving behind all the things that you did and going on to start a new life with new experiences.

Mashing your brain for something they claim is the right change You throw out some lies, hold in a sigh, and then cry Open roads and open arms Open your eyes, not asking you why And you ramble along singing a song Of a time when you were not alone. Then you're off with a bang to a place where you hang with some beat gang Only laughing outside and flaunting some pride you should hide. Another day has passed you by Another life has passed away And while you sat around sipping tea Another child has come to play.

Greg Gocke The past is important but don't waste your time thinking about what was or what could have been. What you make of yourself is more important.

Throughout the climb to the top step, senior year, I have learned this important lesson - you never stop learning nor do you ever stop growing. Like time, people constantly change and progress to a higher step. Every experience has meaning to it. Nothing done is a wasted experience. Each and all is important in the steps you take to arrive at your final destiny.

Kim Kates

Wendy Jamison It's been fun and a long four years. If I could change it all, I don't think I would . Getting a chance to go to high school is a privilege, although it's a requirement. Some kids don't have or ever get the opportunity, and that's rough. I'll always try not to take things in life for granted because they're God's blessings.

Kevin Graham

I look on everyday of my high school years as waves breaking on the beach at Seaside. No two waves are the same; they're always changing and different.

Then I was ready to stride off to Sept .[i.Oer, carefree and confident ... to make new and exciting discoveries.

There were times when you just wanted to drop everything and cry. A lot of times you did just that, but you didn't give up because you knew that diploma was within reach. So you learned a lot of things, met a lot of people, grew a lot, and reached the time when you looked back on your accomplishments and sawwhat you'd done, and you smiled .

Here today, gone tomorrow, Always changing, never ending. Confusion sets in - Life is a carousel. Should we continue? Should we try? Is it enough to say, "Don't worry." Or should we say, "This is Life!"

For me, being a senior was like being in the eighth grade again. I looked forward to graduation and our class trip, but I also remembered being a freshman, being put back down to earth, being responsible for making important decisions that would affect the rest of my life. I wasn't afraid, however, because I had self-confidence and faith in God . With those, I'd be successful in all my endeavors. De Wanda McRae I have grown and I have learned in my high school years. Now they 're behind me. My future is filled with goals which I hope to reach. Many thanks to my Mom and Dad; they encouraged me and gave me strength when I was weak and uncertain. They worked hard to make my goals more realistic. Love you both very much! Senior year has passed like the whisper of a moth's wings which flutter and shimmer in the luminous glow of the moon. Recording Our Steps Producing a yearbook involves not just moderators and a staff, it involves administration, faculty, students, office personnel, and many, many others. The production of the '82 Canticle was made possible by the support, encouragement, and contributions of Fr. Joseph W. Hughes, Sr. Mary Harold, the members of the English Department, the coaches, the class and the clu b moderators, in short, the faculty of N.D .. It was made possible by the help given us by the students, such as our pinch-hitters in photography, Matthew Beechold in developing, and the students who wrote copy for us: Anita Huslin, Coleman O'Donovan, Martha Sullivan, Anne Flynn, Mary Jo Layton, Susan Keirn, Molly Thompson, Anna Bevilacqua, Brian Bralynski. Jim Hines, Chris Lynne, Robert Spilatore, Donna Bacso, Gary Foy, Kirsten and Kristina Veale. Angel Mariano, Danielle Lettiere, Suzanne Foster, Tracy Cicco, Laurie Holsneck, and a myriad of others. It would be impossible to try and name each and every person who did so much for the '82 Canticle, so we'll just mention Kevin Sheridan, our photographer, and Frank Ball, our publisher's representative, as two more people whose contributions were invaluable. Lastly, to all of you who gave of your talents and whose assistance made this yearbook a reality, we say "Thank you!". We hope that you en joy your book. Nylda R. Huslin, Patricia Leoniec & the Canticle Yearbook Staff .
