(UN) CHARTED KOSOVO URBAN RESEARCH ELECTIVE NICK SEARLE + SUZANNAH WALDRON
ELECTIVE SYNOPSIS Kosovo has a land area of 10,900km2 and a population of 2.1 million, comparable to Melbourne with a land area of 8,800km2 and population of 3.8 million. Many European countries have a low growth rate. Unlike Europe, Kosovo has young population and strong population growth rate of around 1.7% (Australia 1.2%). If current trends continue by 2050 Kosovo will have a population of 5.2 million, a similar number to Victoria with 1/20 of the land area. High rates of population growth present a challenge for Kosovo as demand on resources such as food, services and infrastructure increases. There is a trend toward growth in the cities of Kosovo leading to depopulation in rural villages. At the same time urban sprawl threatens to engulf the whole country with illegal settlements and the increasing dominance of the car. The challenge was to compile and condense research data on Kosovo; to simplify information and convey it via graphical means of expression. Investigations ranged from the sociopolitical to the geo-political from infrastructure to capital. The goal was to communicate the maximum message through minimal means.
CHARTING - KOSOVO RESEARCH - ASSIGNMENT 02
Students were divided into research groups: 1. geography / demographics / neighbours 2. history / war / ‘urbicide’ 3. geopolitics / foreign government agendas / NGO policy 4. capital / infrastructure / resources. They were challenged to investigate Kosovo graphically via diagrams, montages, maps, charts, phrases and found imagery.
DESIGN-A-STATE - NETWORKED URBANISM - ASSIGNMENT 03
Students were asked to consider the Republic of Kosovo designed as a single urban concept. Students developed an ‘Urban network concept’ diagram as well as a propositional ‘Macro Spatial Plan’ integrating parameters of mobility, density and infrastructure with their own chosen variables derived from researched investigations.
DESIGN-A-STATE - MICRO SCALE - ASSIGNMENT 04 Students were to take their urban design proposal and utilise, test and expand the urban ideas to address a different scale, by zooming into the city of Ferizaj/Urosevac. The scale or range of scales chosen to intervene is up to each student to decide. The intervention could take the form of problem solving or an initiative (temporary or permanent) that enlightens the macro planning.

HIGH DENSITY URBAN CENTRE
The creation of dense linear urban strips along major transportation arteries helps to curb suburban sprawl by limiting growth to high-density zones near the centre.
By demarcating linear zones of arterial transport (rail),and a high density composite mix of city/commercial, residential and green/agricultural spaces, the linear city will begin to grow upwards before it grows outwards. As the zones reach maximum foreseeable density, outer zones are gradually released for development as needed.

FERIZAJ : RAILWAY TOWN
The rail network in Kosovo has great potential for becoming the country’s main means of transport due to it being reasonably extensive and as an alternative to poor quality roads and highways. Direct integration between the rail nework and city infrastructure will be vital in the Linear City model.

FERIZAJ URBAN SECTION
DENSE URBAN FABRIC
As a regional urban centre on the Kosova City linear strip, Ferizaj is a central hub for the municipality and its surrounds. The inner city radiates around improved rail infrastructure and is composed of high density commercial, public/social and residential development.
The high urban density makes local services, schools, energy and public transport systems feasible. The variety of development types may also help to create new urban villages, or ‘cities within cities’ such as London’s Notting Hill and Stockholm’s Sodermalm, as ideals of cost-effective infrastructure and resource networks.
TIME-RELEASE BOUNDARIES Realizing the reality of sprawl, a high density Ferizaj proposes that bands of new development be released in stages to combat the spread of unnecessary suburbia. New generations of dense urban growth are released every 25 years. Each new composite layer of (city, + residential + green/agricultural) is self supporting in terms of in amenities.
