WORD FROM THE

HEADMASTER

Dear BA Family,

As we consider one of our common exhortations, “Another GREAT day at BA!,” we acknowledge two truths that stand behind that expression: God is always at work, and we always have a choice in how we respond. Looking back, as we do in the following pages, we are thankful for the many ways we can see God’s faithfulness always at work as he has provided though parents, faculty, students, and all who have together contributed to the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy. We can also see a reflection of the way people have responded to both joyful and difficult circumstances, choosing to live in community by seeking to care for and encourage one another.

A passage from Colossians, our faculty summer reading, comes to mind when thinking about our BA community as we move forward into this new school year: “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Colossians 1:9-12)

In the stories here, we share a glimpse into the nurturing and challenging of our students and faculty alike, creating a community where both will thrive. Thanks to generous giving, opportunities abound for students to experience the temple and tabernacle virtually, connect with our new service dog Winston, and enjoy the ongoing development of our campus. Faculty have benefited from the visionary generosity of others as well, resulting in travel around the world for rest, play, and service. We are thankful for those who contribute in various ways to support the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy, and we look forward to seeing the impact of those gifts in the years to come.

Looking to our future as we reflect on God’s goodness and mercy, we have confidence in God’s provision as we seek to live out our school’s mission, “dedicated to nurturing and challenging each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God.”

With confidence in God’s love and his continued work, on behalf of all the BA community, thank you for the part you play in living out our mission for his glory.

In Him,

Our School’s Best Friend

Winston

Last year during an assembly, Upper School Director Andy Bradshaw announced that an unconventional student would be joining BA—one not required to shave, to wear a uniform, or to sit in the Dining Hall at lunch. As students and faculty puzzled over the identity of this unique student, in walked School Counselor Alyssa Hall with a picture of Winston, BA’s new facility dog, on the screen. Although the moment was three years in the making, now it seems as if Winston has always been part of the BA family as he offers a calming distractibility to our students and faculty alike.

As part of the research process, Mrs. Alyssa Hall consulted Daystar Counseling Ministries on the use of their therapy dogs, along with researching how various schools approach the use of therapy dogs on their campuses. Winston is a service animal trained as a facility dog paired specifically to BA, and parallel to Mrs. Hall’s experience acquiring Winston, alumna Anna Grace Rawls ‘22 was behind the scenes as one of the two trainers working with Winston’s puppy litter. Anna Grace’s passion for dog training overlapped with her desire to share her experiences with her peers, and she eagerly and creatively participated in the process of educating BA students about how to interact with Winston as he adjusted to his new job at BA.

12

Winston is BA’s dog even though he lives with the Hall family, and Mr. and Mrs. Hall went to camp with Winston for 7 full days to learn about how to support and continue Winston’s training as his handlers. After their camp experience, a trainer observed Mrs. Hall with Winston at BA. Although Winston passed his test of walking down the hallway without interacting with any students, now Mrs. Hall encourages hallway visits, and it often takes her an hour to walk from one building to the next with Winston by her side. His magnetic presence draws students to him, and their connection to Winston has provided Mrs. Hall with additional moments of connection with those students as well.

Although Winston’s presence is powerful in the hallways, Mrs. Hall believes “he is at his best in a counseling session.” His special training includes applying three different levels of deep pressure when instructed: a “visit,” where he places his head in a lap; a “lay on,” when he acts as a weighted blanket, putting all of his body weight on a person’s legs; and a “hug,” his “show trick”—he puts his head on a person’s shoulder, leaning his weight into that person. This application of weight relaxes people by bringing them into the moment instead of focusing on the past or on the future. Mrs. Hall states, he is “the perfect grounding dog because he activates all five senses to help reduce stress by calming the nervous system.”

Observing Winston in action confirms the delightful benefits he brings to our BA family, providing opportunities to draw us into deeper community with each other.

Learn more about Winston’s training process by visiting the website for Retrieving Independence at www.riservicedogs.org or by clicking on the QR Code to watch the video introducing Winston.

CHARLOTTE CALLIS

The Charlotte Callis Memorial Teacher Enrichment Grant, available to full time BA teachers with more than three years of experience, intends to honor faculty by encouraging teachers to think outside the box to design a program that could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, adding joy to their lives in the same way that Charlotte added joy to the lives of people who knew her. Charlotte lived her life valuing experiences and how places brought people together to create lasting memories, and the grant provides teachers with the gift of that type of experience. Charlotte graduated from Brentwood Academy in 1984, and her classmates donated a bench to the softball field last spring in honor of her memory as well. This year’s recipients of the teacher enrichment grant are Jim Chapman, Austin Groves, and Ally Sneed.

Inspired by a pottery competition show, art teacher Jim Chapman intends to travel to Ireland with his wife. They plan to visit some of the places viewed in the show, along with leisurely exploring the country. Mr. Chapman remembers Charlotte Callis as being others-focused, doing anything she could to help, as evidenced by the way she and her husband Jay consistently volunteered for roles on the swim team when Mr. Chapman coached their children. Jim states, “I was humbled and honored to receive an award from someone I had a friendship with,” noting that even after her passing, her life continues to give to others.

Memorial Teacher Enrichment Grant

Forensics coach Austin Groves plans to visit Jamaica with his wife, continuing a special connection to Jamaica that began when his wife took several trips there to work with a school for the deaf. While they plan to spend time on the trip relaxing at a resort, they are exploring taking a visit to that school as well, as a result of both his wife’s experience there and Mr. Groves’ connection to sign language, having taken American Sign Language in college as his World Language. They are looking into taking their trip this fall break.

Spanish teacher Ally Sneed used her grant to go to Cartagena, Columbia for two weeks this summer. She explored the culture of the old city by taking a horse drawn carriage tour, experiencing beautiful artwork unique to the area, and seeing vibrant azalea flowers laced around buildings with intricately designed architecture. After five days of immersion in the city, eating delicious seafood and enjoying mango smoothies and ice cream, Ms. Sneed joined with a church to help work at their school and volunteer as part of their worship team. Reflecting on how Columbia has been on her heart for decades, Ms. Sneed comments, “seeing God’s hand in all of this is the biggest blessing, to see Him work in ways that I could never hope or imagine, and it is received with a grateful heart.” Ms. Sneed is looking forward to the possibility of having her Spanish students at BA connect with some of the students she worked with while in Columbia.

First Three-Generation Family of Eagles

LEGACY

When Anne (Adams) Edmonds entered Brentwood Academy as an 8th grader for the first time in the summer of 1969, she walked into a trailer on empty land to interview with Mr. Brown. While Anne de scribed her experience at Brentwood Academy as a “dream come true to be attending a school with incredible family values and a nurturing atmosphere,” she never dreamed that more than 50 years later, she and Mr. Brown would both have the experience of having their children and grandchildren attend BA. While Mr. Brown’s youngest grandchild graduated last year, Anne’s oldest grandchild will attend BA this year, and her family will become the first family to have three generations attend BA as students.

At the time Anne started school, there were only four classrooms, the school’s campus was surrounded by fields, and Maryland Way was still a gravel road. Mr. Brown taught her Algebra and coached her in basketball and tennis, and Coach Flatt taught her Geometry and coached her in basketball as well. Anne describes the school as having

a “family feel,” which has literally been true for her as she married Darryl Edmonds, also a BA alum, and has continued to keep in contact with Mr. Brown over the years, a friendship of the kind only found in families.

Anne’s daughter Elizabeth (Edmonds) Walker entered BA as a 7th grader in 1997, and her son Addison entered BA as a 7th grader as well in 1999. The school had grown significantly, including a gym provided by the first capital campaign led by Anne’s father, Dr. Crawford W. Adams. Mr. Brown was still the headmaster until 2000, when Mr. Curt Masters joined the BA family as headmaster at the start of Elizabeth’s sophomore year.

when an adult asks you to show up, and not giving up when faced with challenges. Elizabeth experienced those values in action as a student at BA, and she now shares them with the next generation in her classroom, on the track, and with her children as her oldest daughter Annie will be attending BA in the fall.

When Elizabeth was in Middle School, she tried out for every sport but didn’t make any team. Anne encouraged Elizabeth to run track, but Elizabeth was not interested in running. One afternoon, Elizabeth found a note in her locker, along with her running shoes, saying to show up at the track ready to run at 3:30. Anne had actually written the note, but she signed it, “Mr. Brown.” At 3:30, Elizabeth showed up at the track, ready to run but also a little baffled that Mr. Brown had personally written her a note with that request. That started Elizabeth’s running career in high school, which extended to Elizabeth returning to assist her high school coach when she was in college, and then resulted in Elizabeth teaching science and coaching track and cross country at BA. Although Mr. Brown did not actually have a part in writing that note, Anne had written it in the spirit of her experience at BA—participating to help a team, responding

Annie’s experience at BA will be different from her grandparents’ experience in some ways: she won’t have McDonald’s at school every day for lunch, she won’t be asked to run sprints if she talks in study hall, and she will have structured Bible classes in addition to weekly devotions. Annie’s experience will also be different from her mother’s experience in other ways: she will attend Middle School in a dedicated Middle School building, she won’t have math class in Mr. Brown’s basement on Fridays, and she will have a parent teaching at BA while she attends school. While those experiences will be different, Annie will have the same experience as her grandparents and her mom as she attends a school with “incredible family values and a nurturing atmosphere,” seeking to do all things to the glory of God.

Annie’s presence at BA will continue to weave together the Edmonds/Walker family with the BA family as she represents the first of many third generation BA families yet to come, a dream come true for both their family and for BA.

TAKE FIVE WITH BARBARA STEWART

Five questions with Barbara Stewart who retired after 50 years of service at Brentwood Academy

Q: Devoting your entire career to Brentwood Academy is truly incredible. What would you say kept you at BA all these years?

A: It was the children and the philosophy of the school that made me stay. I had taught for two years in a big public school in Atlanta, and I couldn’t believe this place existed. The children were delightful, and the faculty were wonderful. I thought, “Oh my heavens. This is a nice place!”

Q: What is something you’ll miss about teaching at BA?

A: I’m going to miss the students, the faculty, and the staff. Our staff is incredible. The maintenance team, the technology guys, they’re just wonderful. And of course I’m going to miss the teaching part. But really, that’s what my career has been. It’s the people. It’s a series of people. And of course the philosophy of the school as well. All of that has allowed me to do what I love, which is teaching.

Q: Your students have learned so much from you. What are a couple of things you have learned from your students?

A: I’ve learned how interesting students are. I’ve learned that when you take the time to talk with them, you learn all the things they’re involved with, things you’d never know. I had a 9th grader this year who had been to Egypt. I learned her perspective from what I taught her in class and what she actually experienced in Egypt. It gives them a confidence level too. They can say, “Mrs. Stewart, I learned that.” Another girl came back years ago. She had done a European tour, and a tour guide asked what year of college she was in because she knew so much. He was amazed that she was still in high school. I have learned from them to listen to them, to listen and get them to talk to you.

Q: What are you looking forward to about this new chapter in your life?

A: I have been very, very blessed over the years that I have a number of friends from childhood to today. It will be fun to see them, physically see them, instead of just texting and talking. I’m also looking froward to traveling and taking some more classes. I think just having more time to do what I want to do.

Q: When you look back on your teaching career, are there any stories or memories that make you laugh?

A: Yes, but most of them I can’t tell you.

Faithful Service

Eight Brentwood Academy retirees were honored with a reception on May 31 in the Kennedy Gymnasium. Family members, co-workers, students, and other members of the Brentwood Academy community dropped by to share well-wishes and fond memories of the decades of service from each of them. Retiring this year:

Barbara Stewart 50 years

Troy Putney 25 years

Carolyn Dobbins 23 years

Barbara Carney 20 years

Lynda Fadler 20 years

Beth Taylor 19 years

Lulu Clark 18.5 years

Lea Ann Renner 11 years

Dear Lulu, “You have forever left an impact on me and my time as a student at Brentwood Academy. When I think about our time together planning the junior year prom or advisory, I am taken back to your soft disposition and gentle heart. You were always so intentional during each time spent together. You are truly a very special woman. Thank you for all that you have done for us students along the way.

20
Celebrating Retiring Faculty

Dear Mrs. Dobbins, “When we talk about a Brentwood Academy student being known and loved, Mrs. Dobbins embodies that love. She has the unique ability to make each child feel incredibly special and has instilled in them the desire to work hard to be their best, do their best, and love each other well. There are hundreds of BA grads who will never forget the ‘momentous occasions’ spent in the 6th grade classroom of Carolyn Dobbins and many others who, like Cooper and Conner Smith, still have their little red pencil. You’ve made the greatest of impacts, and we love you!”

– ~Cooper ‘16, Conner ‘19, Jennifer & Marty Smith

Dear Ms. Stewart,

“You were the hardest and best teacher I had in high school, and I will be forever thankful for what you taught me! You taught me not to accept easy answers and taught me the beautiful nuance of history that often defies quick explanations. I’m not sure you know this, but I ended up majoring in history at UVA in large part due to your influence. Thank you for a lifetime of service! I wish you a wonder ful retirement.”

“I have so many close colleagues who have listened, laughed, encouraged, and cared for me over the years. These are the people that I will carry with me long after my days at BA have ended. My prayer is that these people know, and never forget, how special they are to me.”

“I have lots of special memories, but traveling with students for Winterim and Robotics tournaments were some of my favorite times, especially since I did not work directly with students on a daily basis. I also enjoyed having my Advisory groups over the years.” – Beth Taylor

21

“I think faculty meetings and the faculty/ staff devotions will always hold a special place in my soul. All of us singing the Doxology together surely makes the angels shout for joy, and is a constant reminder to ‘whom’ this school really belongs.”

– Barbara Carney

“Mr. Putney changed my life in high school. He took me under his wing and helped me get through so many difficult times in my studies at Brent wood Academy. He always was available if I needed something right at a deadline or didn’t understand something before a big test. Thank you Mr. Putney for taking the time to mold me into a large part of who I am today.”

Dear Mrs, Fadler, “You have an amazing gift to motivate and encourage your students and foster a love of Latin because of your passion and enthusiasm for the subject. I can think of no finer quality for a teacher. Elise worked so hard in your class because you motivated her, and she wanted to please you as her teacher. Thank you for blessing our girls and the BA community with your grace and quick wit. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

– Elise ’24, Sarah ’21, Lee & Joseph Cazayoux

The Brentwood Academy Barn Bash, presented by BAPA (Brentwood Academy Parents’ Association), was a huge hit as the BA family gathered at the Loveless Barn for an evening of dinner and music. Hit songwriters Matt Jenkins, Josh Osborne, and Old Dominion’s Brad Tursi, Matt Ramsey, and Trevor Rosen (BA Dad) kept the audience laughing and singing along to some of the biggest hits to come out of Music City! Special thanks to BAPA for planning this incredible evening and raising funds to continue support of BAPA’s community-building efforts.

CINDY TRIPP Memorial

Cindy Tripp, longtime BA faculty member, lived her life to aid in the flourishing of others. After she passed away, her husband chose to honor her life by continuing to support the flourishing of BA teachers through the Cindy Tripp Memori al Endowment Grant. Full time BA teachers with more than three years of experience can apply, and the grant recipients each year are selected by a panel of faculty comprised of the previous year’s grant recipients. The grant provides teachers with an opportunity for financial support to pursue activities that are restful, exciting, and refreshing that will inspire per sonal growth and pique their curiosity. Previous grant recip ients have traveled, learned the guitar, taken photography lessons, and more. This year’s recipients are Holly Shepherd and Lindsay (Fowlkes) Wade, ’86.

Mrs. Shepherd plans to travel to Poland to volunteer with an organization working with refugees from Ukraine, raising funds to rebuild classrooms so children can return to school. In addition to having a personal connection to the area through her husband Jan Urbanowicz, this trip also reflects Mrs. Shepherd’s heritage. Her grandfather was Ukranian, and

her grandmother was Romanian. Both Jewish, they were pushed from their homes in the early 1900s, immigrating to New York City after traveling through Europe. Thoughts of their experience will certainly impact Mrs. Shepherd’s per spective as she volunteers, and she states that this opportu nity given from the Cindy Tripp Memorial Endowment Grant will “feed her soul.”

For English teacher Mrs. Wade, longtime friend and col league of Cindy Tripp, this grant award has special signifi cance. They often talked together about their connection to the beach, and Cindy Tripp would tell Mrs. Wade, “spend the money, go to the water.” Mrs. Wade will carry those mem ories with her as she wanders the coastlines of Acadia in Maine, reigniting her passion for photography while taking pictures along the coast.

VR Students

Walking across the stone floor of the temple, I gaze upward at the flames burning and read the accompanying scroll explaining how the temple assistants light the fire, using their clothing as wicks. Turning, I walk up the stairs to the platform where sacrifices were made and see four fires burning brightly, surrounded by specks of blood on the stone floor. I imagine bringing my own sacrifice to this place, in a time before that sacrifice was made for me. Then I walk further into the temple, passing through intricately ornate doors, and move towards a large curtain as I approach the Holy of Holies. The texture and design of the curtain remind me of a thick woolen rug. I marvel at how much force it would’ve taken to tear it in two at Jesus’ death, giving us each access to God, with a force that literally shook the world.

I hear Mr. Matt Brown’s (’97) voice say there are 36 acres to explore as part of Herod’s Temple Mount, and I reach up to remove my Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Goggles. I had almost

forgotten that I was actually standing in his classroom on the Senior Hall at Brentwood Academy.

Thanks to a generous gift from Epika Studios and Clifton Lambreth, BA students can experience both the temple and the tabernacle campuses through VR Goggles. These goggles use technology to give students an immersive experience, creating memories that far surpass reading about a place in a textbook or watching a documentary. Mr. Brown has used these goggles in his Senior Bible classes and has asked students to find different scrolls, to notice various details, and to interact with their environment by moving through each program with the tour guide’s instructions. Although Mr. Brown has used these goggles with the programs designed specifically for his class, he imagines applying this technology for students in other classes as well, adding depth to their classroom experiences at BA.

The Brentwood Academy Board of Trustees and school leadership have developed a facilities master plan to support our strategic vision to serve current and future generations of Brentwood Academy students, faculty, and families.

Key aspects of this vision include the already completed fitness center renovation, Brentwood Academy’s first outdoor chapel, the Center for Academics and Student Life, additional student academic support offerings, and further investment into the endowment of BA to strengthen long-term financial stability. These features will expand opportunities for student enrichment, support, and connection, aiming to further enhance the nurturing and challenging of each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the Glory of God.

27
THE VISION FOR BRENTW OOD A CADEMY | PS ALM 100:5

This plan involves a phased approach that ensures forward progress while having a minimal impact on daily campus life. BA students have begun experiencing the benefits in our completely renovated fitness center inside The Rock, which now accommodates twice as many students, along with two full-time strength and conditioning professionals. The addition of Elite Form technology at each station allows for personalized programs to improve fitness outcomes for each student.

The next phase includes building the outdoor chapel and tennis center on the south side of campus, followed by the Center for Academics and Student Life. This will be a 51,500 square foot building, located at a new entrance at the intersection of Granny White Pike and Virginia Way. The Center will include a College Counseling suite, Admission suite, Head of School suite, Common Gathering Area, a new Dining Hall with a Grab & Go Café for after hours, and an Academic Quad and Spirit Store. It will also include seven new classrooms, an outdoor classroom, expanded space for Student Academic Support, and an Experiential Learning Center.

We would like to acknowledge donors who have stepped forward in faith to give generously toward this important work. We have bright hope for our future as we continue Forward in Faith, and we invite you to consider the role God may be prompting you to play in the future of Brentwood Academy.

THANK YOU FOR GIVING!

Strong Stewardship

A day in the life of a Brentwood Academy student begins early each morning and extends late into the evening. Days are filled with nurturing and challenging experiences that shape the body, mind, and spirit of each student. The excellent programs and deep relationships our students experience are made possible by the financial sacrifice and investment of our parents and supporters. This generosity is thoughtfully stewarded by our board of trustees and school leadership.

We ended the 2021-22 school year with strong re-enrollment and a full 6th grade class enrolled to begin their journey this fall. The charts illustrate our budget for the 2022-23 school year. Thank you for your partnership, trust, and support that continues to propel Brentwood Academy forward as we focus on our strategic priorities of The Whole Person, Academic Excellence, Community, and Financial Strength.
