HEADMASTER

Dear BA Family,

In our efforts to live out the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy, we have been consistently using a common theme with the simple question, “Well? Well? How was it?” In first day assemblies, we use the question to remind students and faculty that the answer someone else gives to that question may depend on the interaction he or she has had with us that day; we each have more influence than we realize. Similarly, at the final assembly of the school year, with the same question and principle in mind, we invite reflection on our experiences, our growth, and the many ways in which we were supported and encouraged by others. In the process, we recognize that God puts us to use for His purposes as we encourage one another, making each person uniquely positioned to play a vital role in the Brentwood Academy community and culture.

While we pursue the goal of nurturing and challenging each whole person, we remember and acknowledge the lives that have contributed to shaping the BA community from the beginning, in addition to current faculty and parent roles that continue to support the BA ministry and mission. Thanks to generous giving, our faculty continue to develop

their skills through continuing education, to benefit from grants that allow them to explore interests, and to share their expertise with BA faculty and students in return.

Investing into the people in our BA community continues to provide immeasurable returns as our faculty continue to learn, grow, and rest, resulting in a faculty prepared to lead a transformational experience for our students and their families.

As we reflect on the past year and look forward to the coming year, we are reminded of the many ways the Brentwood Academy community at large has supported BA through prayer, encouragement, and financial contributions. With confidence in God’s love and his continued work, on behalf of all the BA community, thank you for the part you play in living out our mission for His glory. I am grateful for the generous hearts and open hands that have allowed us to partner together to impact young men and women to make a generational impact for eternity.

With thankfulness to God for his work in us and through us

Barbara Stewart

A GENERATIONAL IMPACT ON BRENTWOOD ACADEMY

It is said that the impact of a great teacher can never be erased; his or her influence in our lives never stops. This statement epitomizes Barbara Stewart and the impact she had on the students of Brentwood Academy for 50 years. Mrs. Stewart’s effect was not limited to the classroom and her knowledge of history. She also influenced students by being the faculty sponsor for Youth in Government, Model UN, and the National Honor Society. Her presence encouraged growth in character and virtue, deeply affecting the lives of her students, colleagues, and friends.

Mrs. Stewart dedicated her life to making sure that her students understood their past. She was passionate about history and used her love of art as a way to make it more tangible. Sitting in Mrs. Stewart’s classroom, history came alive. Her vivid descriptions of King Tut’s tomb allowed her to explain ancient Egyptian life. Her story of Pheidippides running 26 miles to Sparta to warn of the Persian’s advances on Athens showed the disadvantages of the city-state as a form of government and the reason for the eventual rise of the Roman Empire. Her passion and dedication to her craft inspired many of her students to major or minor in history and inspired others to become teachers themselves. Her love for learning has also encouraged many of her students to travel all over

the world to see what she so accurately described from memory and in detail through slides on an overhead projector.

Mrs. Stewart’s classes not only instilled knowledge, but they also prepared her students for their next endeavor: college. Each test she gave ended with one or two essay questions whose value amounted to at least a quarter of the total point value of the test. In order to pass, students were required to synthesize vast amounts of information into overarching themes and were required to lace their answer with details and/or dates, thus proving thorough knowledge of the subject. Analysis and evaluation of these historical events and their meaning challenged students to think critically and

to reason through problems as seen throughout history. Although many students probably dreaded these challenging questions, Mrs. Stewart’s tests gave her students an advantage by preparing them for what was expected of them in college, giving them the confidence they needed to succeed.

By sponsoring Youth in Government (YIG) and Model UN, Mrs. Stewart showed her students the importance of their civic responsibility on both a local and global level. Involvement in YIG gave students an interactive understanding of the three branches of government and inspired countless students to become lawyers and lobbyists, to work in campaigns and administrations, and to faithfully be active in the political process at a variety of

12
13

levels. Her sponsorship of Model UN gave students a love for international affairs and a real yearning to look beyond the world of BA, Tennessee, and even the United States. She encouraged her students to see what was happening around the world and to recognize how humanity is interconnected.

Mrs. Stewart revered the example of Tip O’Neill and Howard Baker—adversaries who could fight by day on the Senate floor and have dinner that night laughing and joking about the day’s events. Today our country is politically divided, and people are vocal about their opinions, but Mrs. Stewart offered an alternative approach. She encouraged her students to have respect for each other and to listen before speaking. She respected all views, never imposing her opinion on any student but instead challenging each person to think and defend their perspective with facts and integrity. At YIG and Model UN, she truly loved nothing more than hearing her students’ accounts of the day’s events each night. As she was fond of reminding her students—especially when they were to representing BA—it was imperative to “behave with actions becoming a lady or a gentleman, using proper etiquette and decorum,” and “early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.”

As the sponsor for the National Honor Society (NHS), Mrs. Stewart impressed upon others her value of academic excellence and her belief in serving others. She expected the most of her students, raising the bar and challenging them to do their very best. She made a point of continuing to learn new things throughout her life and encouraged others to do the same. Service was an integral component of membership in the NHS, ensuring that academically gifted students were engaging with the world outside of their books and helping others along the way. In this role, Mrs. Stewart exhibited quiet but strong leadership, modeling for others how to lead with grace and excellence.

Finally, for those who sought out Mrs. Stewart as an advisor or mentor, she was a loyal confidant and dear friend. Someone close to me upon her passing said, “she took many of the secrets of my high school years with her to the grave.” She knew how to listen intently, giving wise counsel and advice only when it was asked of her. Mrs. Stewart encouraged cooperation and made the most mundane things (cleanup in the girls’ bathroom two years in a row) fun and purposeful. When my last child graduated from BA in 2015, Mrs. Stewart started insisting I call her Barbara, saying, “because we are friends.” At first, this was unthinkable;

I struggled with the concept. Yet, as our conversations continued even as I moved away from Nashville, I realized that this was her gift to me—her sweet and dear friendship—and that influence will never end.

W hy Relationships are the Heart of BA

As I was sitting with Mr. Brown, the founding head of school, and fellow classmate, Jeri Campbell Moore ’73, at Mrs. Barbara Stewart’s celebration of life, memories of the last 50 years rolled through my mind. Jackson Peden ’21, Gif Thornton ’80, and Suzanne Graf McLemore ’77, spoke of similar recollections of Mrs. Stewart’s passion for history, travel, and education. Although decades apart, much remains the same.

The Academy Singers beautifully sang “Be Wise,” and true to form, we wept or at least got a little teary, as we listened to the powerful yet simple lyrics Jenny Oldham, longtime fine arts chair, arranged 34 years ago. 8th graders process in the 8th Grade Celebration to this longstanding traditional song and are told that in four years, they will hear it again at Commence¬ment. The impact of the words is eternal: “Wise men still seek the Savior. Be wise.” The community known as Brentwood Academy parents, teachers, coaches, and students taught us this truth as we learned together. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 1:7. Although decades apart, much remains the same.

Sitting behind us at the celebration were retired and much revered faculty members: Judy Flatt (Spanish faculty and wife of legendary Coach Flatt), Sue Gering (director of admission), Judith Reynolds (science faculty), along with parent volunteer Raja O’Brien. They are mothers of eleven alumni children who invested their lives working and volunteering incomputable hours at BA.

All three of these women left strong legacies of dedication through prayer and work, as have thousands of parents since 1969. Although decades apart, much remains the same.

Mr. Masters regularly reminds our students, faculty, and parents that “you have more influence than you know.” As I gazed around the theatre, I recounted such sweet and difficult memories with almost everyone present. Victories, defeats, joys, and sorrows all in a community called Brentwood Academy that the Lord brought together under His providence, faithfulness, and kindness. With a heart of overflowing gratitude, our community comes together for celebrations and grief. Oh, how very grateful I am for the people who have come through the doors on Granny White! The mission of Brentwood Academy to nurture and challenge is still very much alive! Although decades apart, much remains the same.

“Wise men still seek the Savior. Be wise.”

A CULTURE OF Generosity

It’s through your generous giving that Brentwood Academy flourishes. We are able to fulfill our mission to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God because of our generous community of parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff, trustees and friends. Please know how grateful we are for all you do and the many ways you support the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy. We always welcome the opportunity for a conversation with you regarding the many ways you can support BA:

THE BA FUND

Your yearly gifts to the BA Annual Fund bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of a Brentwood Academy education. It supports the general operating budget and additional programs and activities that directly benefit students.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Gifts to Brentwood Academy Endowed Funds provide income to BA in perpetuity.

CAPITAL GIFTS

Capital gifts allow Brentwood Academy to plan and build for the future.

PLANNED GIFTS

Donors can remember the school through their estate plans or other deferred giving arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts, life insurance policies, retirement plan assets, or real estate. A deferred gift through your estate is a simple way to make a positive impact on Brentwood Academy. Larger deferred gifts may establish endowment funds, creating a lasting impact. By providing for Brentwood Academy in your estate plans, you enhance the lives of future students for generations to come.

IRA ROLL OVERS

If you are 70 ½ or older and taking mandatory income distributions from your IRA, you can avoid the income tax generated by these distributions by directing a gift directly from your IRA to Brentwood Academy. You can direct up to $100,000 per year – it’s a great tax planning tool.

ALUMNI BRICKS

We invite our alumni to participate in our Alumni Garden by purchasing an alumni brick. The bricks are a focal point of the garden and a beautiful way to recognize your time at BA. Each brick symbolizes the foundation and the path taken by our Brentwood Academy graduates. Every brick that is purchased is inscribed with the alum’s name and graduation year. Alumni bricks are a wonderful way to honor a Brentwood Academy graduate!

MATCHING GIFTS

Did you know you can double or even triple your impact to Brentwood Academy with a corporate match? Experts estimate that billions of dollars in matching gift funds are unclaimed each year. Do you or your spouse work for one of the many companies with a matching gift program? Check with your HR Department and ask if your company has or would consider a matching gift program.

Forward GROWING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

BA’s middle school experience was enhanced by increased student academic support, new exploratory course offerings, and a dedicated Middle School Christian Life Director for the 2022-2023 school year. These additions, made possible because of the generous financial support of our donors, had a direct impact on students, faculty, and parents in our BA community.

Enhanced Exploratory Offerings

Middle school is a time for exploration when students often learn of new interests and gifts. Our 8th grade exploratory courses are designed with this end in mind, and students experienced two new exploratory classes this year, Capstone and Communications.

Our Capstone class stretches our students to think critically while developing their research and presentation skills. This is accomplished by students researching a great idea and synthesizing what they learned. Next, the students present the idea by developing and telling a compelling story, including graphics and public speaking, while learning to effectively receive feedback.

In our digital age, so much communication occurs through text messaging and social media. At the same time, it is essential that our students develop strong interpersonal communication skills, and our new Communications class focuses on intentional skill development in this area. Students learn about aspects of positive verbal communication skills, including having meaningful conversations. Students have learning experiences that help with memory techniques, powerful introductions, and building confidence in public speaking.

Middle School Christian Life

A Middle School Christian Life Director role was created to focus on the unique developmental aspects related to middle school students’ spiritual formation. J.D. Binger, middle school teacher and coach, enthusiastically accepted this position. While reflecting on the first year in the role, Mr. Binger shared the following highlights:

• Expanding mentorship opportunities by developing deeper relationships with students,

• Developing and refining Middle School Christian Life class curricula, and

• Further developing and focusing on current and new Middle School Christian Life events such as Operation Christmas Child.

Mr. Binger recently shared that for the 2023-2024 school year, he plans to explore ideas to further facilitate middle school spiritual formation. These ideas include on-campus prayer gatherings and off-campus Bible Studies as well as partnering with our Middle School athletics department to strengthen the connection between faith and sports.

These advancements are a few examples of how the growth-focused mindset of our faculty and the generous financial support of our donors allows Brentwood Academy to best serve students, parents, and faculty.

MEMORIAL TEACHER GRANTS

Brentwood Academy faculty have the opportunity to apply for the Cindy Tripp Memorial Endowment Grant and the Charlotte Callis Memorial Teacher Enrichment Grant, both available to full time BA faculty with more than three years of experience. These grants, generously funded by the Tripp and Callis families, aid in the flourishing of BA faculty by providing an opportunity for financial support to pursue activities that are restful, exciting, and refreshing, with the goal of inspiring personal growth and adding joy to their lives.

Charlotte Callis Grant

This year’s recipients of the Charlotte Callis Memorial Teacher Enrichment Grant are Ms. Mandy Skaggs Allender ’97, middle school math faculty, and Coach Buddy Alexander ’84, middle school athletic director.

Ms. Allender will traveled to Savannah, Georgia with her four children. In addition to enjoying the rich culture and history of the city, Ms. Allender will had the opportunity to take her youngest adopted son to his birthplace.

Coach Alexander was a classmate of Charlotte’s and enjoyed the opportunity to attend the College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Nebraska where good friend

and BA Dad Scott Cline (Easton ’17) will served as an umpire at the series. Coach Alexander is a former college player and coached baseball at Brentwood Academy for 24 years. He says it has been a lifelong dream to attend the MCWS.

Cindy Tripp Grant

This year’s recipients of the Cindy Tripp Memorial Endowment Grant are Mrs. Jane-Ann Myers and Mr. Jimmy Ker.

Mrs. Myers enjoyed a time of rest, relaxation, and reflection as she used her grant to explore San Antonio, Texas and made her way through a stack of books.

Mr. Ker, a motorcycle enthusiast, rode his bike through the East Tennessee mountains to take part in the BMW U.S. Rider Academy. Located at the BMW Performance Center near Spartanburg, South Carolina, this is North America’s premier motorcycle and automotive training facility.

Celebrating Retiring Faculty & Staff

Faithful Service

Thank you to two long-time members of our Brentwood Academy family who retired at the end of the 2023 school year.

Whether setting up tables and chairs or in coat and tie to greet families on Admission Day, Dan Billington served the school for 13 years as BA’s Director of Maintenance, maintaining and assisting with campus facilities, events, and programs on campus. No task ever seemed too small, and Dan was always on call, willing to meet the many needs of our faculty and staff. He cared about every part of the BA mission and was an integral part of delivering it. Many mornings he could be found reading scripture and praying with students before they started their Saturday School assignments. Dan’s spirit of cooperation and love for the school will be missed.

Long-time Science Department faculty member Col. Kent Bradford retired after a 17-year teaching career. Col. Bradford joined BA in 2006 after serving 30 years as a USMC Colonel. “The Colonel,” as he was respectfully known at BA, held the position of Dean of Students for seven years and taught several science subjects including Marine Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology. Col. Bradford helped lead the Brentwood Academy WILDerness Club, facilitating trips throughout the country, and served as an integral part of BA’s security team.

ALUMNI DAY OF GIVING

This spring, Brentwood Academy launched the inaugural Alumni Day of Giving. Designed to bring alumni and parents of alumni together, this 24-hour online fundraising event celebrated and supported BA’s Annual Fund by offering an opportunity for these donors to contribute to a common goal.

Each decade of alumni competed with one another through an online platform, resulting in donations of over $100,000 from 11 states, with representation from every graduation year. Of the donors who gave during Alumni Day of Giving, 85% were alumni and 15% were parents of alumni.

“We were particularly excited to see the enthusiasm from so many young alumni, including about 20% of the graduates from the Class of 2022, who chose to give back. Many young alums chose to give their graduation year, for example $20.22,” says Kelly Smith, Assistant Director of Development.

24

“BA is where I found my lifelong friends who I consider family. It brought me the greatest memories from my teenage years. I feel that BA prepared me for the aspects of life I have already experienced since graduation. BA is where I grew up and where I discovered many of the people I adore to this day. I would hope future students will have a similar experience. I want to give back to a place that gave me so much, including memories, friends, and a foundation of life.”

Emma Grace Thrasher ‘19

EMMA GRACE WILL GRADUATE IN DECEMBER FROM MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY WITH A DEGREE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION.

“I choose to give back to Brentwood Academy because of the impact I see daily in my life as an alum. There are so many key people from my days at BA that poured into me on both the good days and the tough ones. There are many former teachers that I still have close relationships with today. I’m one of four siblings impacted by this school and my dad, uncles, and many cousins are BA grads as well. Giving back is an easy way to show my appreciation.”

Luke Collins ‘20

LUKE ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, CHATTANOOGA AND IS NOW WORKING AS A TOUR MANAGER IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

“The impact that BA has had on me is something that I not only see day in and day out, but in my life as a whole. I wholeheartedly believe that I am better able to show the love of Christ to others because of the love that BA has poured into me. Giving to Brentwood Academy is a small way to try and give back to a place that has given me more than I could ever return. I think that it is important that future students can receive the same stellar opportunity that I was given through the help of others, which is why I chose to give.”

Lindsey Lumsdaine ‘22

LINDSEY IS MAJORING IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES AND SOCIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

“Brentwood Academy has impacted my life in many different aspects. Whether it is academically, physically, or spiritually, there are many things I still cherish from my seven years spent at BA. One way I have been impacted the most is by the community I gained from my time there. BA has blessed me with many friends and teachers that now feel like family. I am confident in the people that surround me and lift me up and know that I could depend on them for anything and at any given time.

I care about the future of BA because I want students younger than me to also be surrounded by a community that cares for them throughout their time there and after. It’s a place I want to always cherish and continue to come back to, which is why I gave and will continue to give to the school.”

Guests gathered at the Loveless Barn on April 6, 2023 for the BA Barn Bash. BAPA (Brentwood Academy Parents’ Association) once again put together an unforgettable night. The evening featured dinner, a live auction, and a fantastic line-up of some of Nashville’s most talented hit songwriters, including BA alum and Big Machine Recording Artist Conner Smith ‘19 who was joined on stage by singer/songwriters Josh Kerr and Parker Welling, the very talented daughter of Suzanne Taylor Welling ‘82. Scott Holmes ‘91 kept the crowd laughing throughout the evening as the emcee. The event not only raised funds for BA, but a portion of the proceeds from the auction were also given to The Covenant School’s parent association to help them meet the many needs of the Covenant family. Thank you to everyone who made the BA Barn Bash such a success!

2023

OF PHILANTHROPY Celebration

On Sunday, March 5, 2023, Lanesia and David Strange graciously opened their home so Brentwood Academy could celebrate and thank our leadership donors. Guests were able to enjoy wonderful hors d’oeuvres poolside in the Strange’s lovely backyard while the BA Jazz Band played in the background. Curt Masters shared some updates about the school and prayed a blessing of Thanksgiving for all that God has provided. Whether you were able to be with us in person or not, we would like all our donors to know how grateful we are for each of you!

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Why Give to Brentwood Academy?

my pleasure to serve as Brentwood Academy’s Director of Development. When asked what I do, I say that I help our school partner with the Brentwood Academy community to create a culture of philanthropy. A generous school culture ensures that students, faculty, staff, and trustees leave a better BA than we found for the generations yet to come. We are standing on shoulders of supporters who went before us over 50 years ago, and it is now our turn to steward this great mission.

fellow Christian School colleague, Bruce Lockerbie, has written, “Christian schools are bathed in prayer and fueled by dollars.” parents invest many dollars in tuition, yet Brentwood Academy’s mission and ministry depends on generous giving beyond tuition to deliver exceptional programming and facilities for both today and tomorrow. The facilities and real estate we enjoy today were all funded by former families through voluntary gift support rather than tuition. We need the support of all parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and trustees to ensure BA’s light shines brightly now and in the future.

far, the case I have made for “why give” is the same case for any quality independent school. It is the nature of the independent school funding model. So, what makes Brentwood Academy any different? Why give to BA? Giving to Brentwood Academy supports so much more than a student’s education. Giving provides resources to facilities and programs that support Christian student leadership, athletics, the arts, tuition assistance, and more. Your gifts are an important part in helping launch young men and women into the world well, so they can be salt and light to all they encounter.

Brentwood Academy the gospel of Jesus Christ is boldly proclaimed and advanced. We hope that our donors see their gifts transformational investments in the Kingdom of God and trust that He will do immeasurably more than we can imagine through our mission and ministry.

Our vision and plans are grounded by our mission statement and the four pillars of our Forward in Faith Strategic Plan:

• The Whole Person

• Academic Excellence

• Community

• Financial Strength

Brentwood Academy has an all-encompassing facilities master plan that is reviewed annually and updated as needed. The phasing is complex because some projects must be completed in order for other projects to be feasible. Progress on the master plan relies on continued, generous support from donors. Generous gifts over the past year have advanced our master plan forward with planning and design work and we want to thank our donors who gave during 2022-2023.

We are focused on two immediate projects with another on the horizon. These projects impact each pillar of our strategic plan and will impact every student and family.

Main Entrance

Parents, staff and visitors have recognized a need for a main entrance enhancement to provide safer access to and from campus on an increasingly busy Granny White Pike, as well as parking for school events. We have city approval for a new main entrance including a traffic light, attractive landscaping, and more than 60 new parking spaces.

BA’s First Chapel

We are called to live our lives in communion with God. Our first chapel will be a tangible sign of our mission and commitment to uplift Christ and to do all things to the Glory of God. This enclosed space, with flexible seating for up to 175 people, will allow people to worship, learn and fellowship with one another and the Lord.

Bill and Beth Brown Center for Academics and Student Life

After these two projects are complete, we will be fully focused on the Bill and Beth Brown Center for Academics and Student Life to address needs for classroom and relational space and our new front door to BA.

Common gathering areas, a new academic quad and the spirit store will be rich settings for fellowship and relationship building. We will also enhance the dining hall with indoor and outdoor seating and a Grab & Go café. Our academic support and college counseling will also be centralized here with an experiential learning center.

If you’d like more information on any of these projects, please reach out to Curt Masters, Headmaster, or Jason Powell, Director of Development. curt_masters@brentwoodacademy.com

BUDGETED REVENUES $27,490,000

Your Support Makes an Impact

God’s provision, through the generosity of donors, advanced the mission and ministry of BA during the 2022-2023 school year with over $820,000 received for The BA Fund. A robust annual fund provides for current-year budgetary needs and supports enhancements that benefit students, parents, and faculty. We are so grateful for our community’s partnership and investment.

Since Brentwood Academy’s founding in 1969, donors have played an active role in propelling Brentwood Academy forward. Generous donors help to further equip our faculty and staff to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God. Years from now, today’s students will look back and remember the special moments when a faculty member, coach, advisor, or staff member made a difference. Your investment into BA helps to guarantee those special moments now and for generations to come.

Our future is bright as we continue partnering with families by investing in their students’ growth and success as they develop into young men and women. The charts illustrate our budget for the 2023-2024 school year. Giving sustains and enhances our unique community, bringing together BA families, alumni, and friends of all generations through a shared commitment to student success.
