149 SUSTAINING DONORS NUMBER OF DONORS WHO HAVE GIVEN FOR 7+ CONSECUTIVE YEARS
Brentwood Academy continues to invest in essential elements of our mission and ministry to nurture and challenge each whole person to the glory of God. Giving to The BA Fund helps to provide an exceptional academic experience in a Christ-centered environment.
A WORD FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Every one of us has more influence than we sometimes realize, and it’s also the case that each person needs more encouragement than others might think. Recognizing our opportunities to influence, and appreciating the impact that encouragement can have, leads to intentionally investing in others, with the possibility of making a difference that ripples through generations. This pursuit of encouraging others, or to aid in the flourishing of others, as stated by former faculty member Mrs. Cindy Tripp, can provide a reminder of how each person’s gifts can be used to the glory of God, shifting the focus from what can be gained to what can be given.
This edition of the Impact Report includes stories about the influence of others throughout a lifetime, including the sacrifice of service to our country, the influence of lasting relationships with teachers and coaches, and the forwardlooking Portrait of a Graduate, a depiction of qualities that we want our students to develop while experiencing BA’s mission. These stories share a common theme of gratitude for the deep and enduring impact that one person can have on others. The value of the relationships, built over time through periods of both celebration and difficulty, becomes apparent as we look back with appreciation. We can see
God’s blessing through individual men and women whose lives continue to remind us to encourage each other, to learn to thrive under adverse circumstances, remembering that God is always at work and that we always have a choice in how we respond.
As we move into a new school year, may we remember the lives of those who have impacted us as we also look for ways to be used by God to encourage and love others well through our gifts, talents, time, and resources. Thank you for your continued support of Brentwood Academy through prayer, financial resources, and encouragement as BA continues to nurture and challenge each whole person–body, mind, and spirit–to the glory of God, supporting the continued development of resilient, problem-solving, critical thinking, thoughtfully-communicating Christ-followers.
With gratitude for the many ways our community supports the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy,
Curt Masters, Head of School

PORTRAIT OF A BRENTWOOD ACADEMYGraduate
Brentwood Academy’s Portrait of a Graduate expresses the specific characteristics actively cultivated in our students, aiming to articulate what it looks like to hit the target of living out the mission and ministry of Brentwood Academy: an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school dedicated to nurturing and challenging each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God.
Brentwood Academy aims to help people choose to be a certain way–to give up something to become a certain way, where immediate gratification isn’t possible in fine arts, academics, or athletics. In the long path of life, while it may be tempting to measure immediate outcomes, the outcome is in the life lived well: “a long obedience in the same direction,” as said by Eugene Peterson. Steps toward the target are not always linear–sometimes there’s suffering that leads towards resilience, and sometimes there’s grace that leads to repentance that leads to God’s goodness. The Portrait of a Graduate qualities reflect the outcome of stages where students respond well to their experiences over time.
The Portrait of a Graduate developed after meeting with five groups of stakeholders to articulate the characteristics most important to Brentwood Academy as an institution. The qualities selected, based both on the long and storied tradition of Brentwood Academy and on what the school aims to do aspirationally, help define how it looks when BA reaches the goal of the mission statement in each person. With a realistic expectation for the experience of a Brentwood Academy education while also reaching for something not yet attained, the five guiding qualities help define the pursuit of who students become, beyond just what they know. Brentwood Academy aims to develop resilient, critical thinking, thoughtful communicating, problem solving Christ followers, equipping them to use their gifts to live out the calling God has on their lives.
Critical Thinker
Critical thinking is developed through analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information to make carefully reasoned arguments and judgments – and to do this in community. Thinking beyond the surface to analyze and define a situation includes recognizing the difference between truth and falsehood, learning to speak clearly in the process of exploring, and listening and understanding what someone else is thinking and feeling. A critical thinker is someone who can see the truth and share the truth.
Resilient
Resilience is being equipped to thrive under adverse circumstances while maintaining mental and emotional stability because of an identity grounded in the image of God, not only when faced with challenges, but also in good times when tempted to depend on something other than God.
Thoughtful Communicator
A thoughtful communicator is someone who will speak the truth with boldness and who will be kind in the presentation of the position believed most important. Thoughtful communicators can clearly articulate ideas while carefully using the power of words, learning to see neighbors as fellow imagebearers who have infinite value.
Problem Solver
Problem solving includes using an array of cognitive, analytical, and interpersonal skills to effectively identify, analyze, and respond to challenges, along with the ability to serve others who are facing challenges. Problem solving represents not having an answer for all the problems, but rather having a willingness to step in to make a difference when a situation isn’t like it should be, acknowledging how God positions people to make a difference and to offer hope when there isn’t any or to give peace and comfort when needed.
Christ Follower
This quality recognizes God’s authority in our lives and how He calls us to accept Christ as our Savior, reflecting the need for a daily, personal relationship with Christ. Our students come from varying backgrounds and our hope is that each of them will become a Christ follower and learn to know and love Him.

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE PERSONIFIED
This is a printed version of Upper Schoold Director Mr. Andy Bradshaw’s introduction of the 2024 Paul Compton Valedictorian Award at BA’s Commencement.
“Brentwood Academy seeks to develop five characteristics that we hope to see when students graduate from BA.
These characteristics describe Lucas Creed Watkins, recipient of the 2024 Paul Compton Valedictorian Award.
• Resilient – Mr. Golenor, his AP Calculus BC teacher, says Lucas is relentless in his pursuit of the “why,” with an insatiable curiosity.
• Critical Thinker – His AP Physics C Mechanics and Electromagnetism teacher Mr. Ullein says he regularly demonstrates the ability to unravel the most challenging problems that the AP examiners can create. Mrs. Buachiero, Lucas’s AP Spanish teacher, says that Lucas is the type of student that makes his teachers better.
• Thoughtful Communicator – Mr. Linus Nguyen says Lucas loves to engage in deep conversations and ask questions to see where the conversation could go. He loves having conversations about anything and everything; he is truly inquisitive and loves to let his mind and conversations wander.
• Problem Solver – Dr. Tom Cox remarks that Lucas is a critical thinker and a problem solver, which perhaps is the single highest commodity in today’s global market.
• Christ Follower – One teacher commented that Lucas’ humility and desire to help is refreshing, and he is a loving servant to those around him.
Obviously, our faculty is impressed with Lucas and his powerful academic and cocurricular footprint:
• Lucas took 12 honors classes and 10 Advanced Placement classes.
• Lucas has made only A’s at Brentwood Academy, earning a 4.7 GPA.
• Additionally, Lucas earned a perfect 36 on the ACT, 1540 on the SAT and 5’s on all AP exams and counting.
• He has never failed to make the Headmaster’s Roll and has earned academic awards in Geometry, Algebra II, AP World History, Jazz Ensemble, AP Chemistry, AP Physics I, AP U.S. History, AP Literature, AP Language, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Biology, AP Physics C, and AP Calculus BC.
• He has been a member of the National Honor Society and is a National Merit Commended Scholar.
• Lucas was the Massey Writing Award Winner (a literary award recognizing superior criticism and general writing style).
• Lucas was a member of and a delegate for BA’s Model United Nations Team, served on our Student Leadership Team, is the founder and president of the BA chess club, and is a contributing writer for the BA Literary Flight Magazine. He is also a four-year member of the jazz ensemble and was in the cast of Murder on the Orient Express and Footloose
Lucas does all of this with a self-deprecating sense of humor and a posture of humility that is beyond his years. He is attending Vanderbilt University this fall, and it will be exciting to see how God positions him to impact His kingdom.

Kingdom Impact
Making an Impact Beyond Brentwood, Tennessee
By Zach Watson
Over spring break 2024 a group of 30 parents and students from Brentwood Academy embarked on a transformative mission trip to Baja, Mexico. Their efforts focused on serving the local community, leaving a lasting impact through various projects and activities. One significant accomplishment was the construction of an additional classroom for the Los Reyes School, providing much-needed space for additional growth. The group also organized a carnival for the community, including activities such as a jump house, games with prizes, and a mobile clinic. Before the trip, the group also collected school supplies and clothing and distributed them to the Los Reyes School and the local community.
On Sunday, they led worship with a Papalote Church translator. One of the most inspiring aspects of the trip was witnessing the Papalote Church’s service
to the community. The church’s involvement in supporting the Los Reyes School and providing an after-school program left a profound impression on the group.
The team also contributed to the opening of the Casa Amor (an independent living facility) by engaging in cleaning tasks and landscaping to prepare for its opening. In addition to the many opportunities to serve, the students from BA enjoyed a memorable night of games and worship under the stars with local Baja teens, where pizza and s’mores were served.
Through their collective efforts, the Brentwood Academy group exemplified a spirit of service and compassion, leaving a positive impact on the lives of those they encountered in Baja.
DON’T TAKE THE LAST BISCUIT
JimmyGentry
1925-2022
By Kristin Vazquez
Perched on a stool in the Brentwood Academy gymnasium, microphone in hand, Coach Jimmy Gentry regularly shared the stories of both his early years in Franklin, TN during the Great Depression and his experiences in WWII. Tales of catching rabbits to help support his family financially when he was young also included the lesson of not taking the last biscuit, saving it in case someone showed up at their house who needed it more than they did. He learned to hunt creatively to help his family survive, sticking a piece of twisted barbed wire into a squirrel hole to catch the squirrel by the tail, making snares for rabbits, and reaching hands underneath riverbanks to let catfish latch onto their fingers.
Although his childhood included challenges related to providing food and basic needs for his family, his fond memories show a perspective rooted in unselfishness, gratitude, and the ability to thrive under adverse circumstances as he developed his skill of problem solving, resilience, and kindness that became a theme in so many of his stories. The character built throughout his childhood experiences laid the foundation for the significant sacrifice of his service in WWII.
Year after year as he shared his story, he would close his eyes at a certain point, saying he couldn’t tell this part of it while the eyes of students were looking back at him–they reminded him too much of the eyes of the people looking at him from within the concentration camp at Dachau. With closed eyes and intense emotional effort, Coach Gentry boldly yet gently shared his memories of the suffering of the people and the intensity of his experience, providing
an eyewitness account of the horror endured by millions. Also recorded in his memoir An American Life, he recalls interactions with people as they were freed from the concentration camp, along with the experience of having his own head shaved and being sprayed down before leaving because of exposure to the lice and other diseases rampant among the prisoners at Dachau.
Mrs. Gale Payne, former BA faculty member, assisted Coach Gentry in the early stages of writing his memoir by transcribing some of the videos of his storytelling recorded by the Franklin Historical Society. “I can see why he made such a wonderful coach and teacher,” reflects Mrs. Payne. “He was such a gifted storyteller, and I could have sat and listened to him all day. He knew how to draw listeners in and keep them listening. But it wasn’t any story. It was his stories, and they were told with meaning and purpose. The story of his life as a child, his life in a small town, his time in the army during WWII, marrying his
high school sweetheart, and his years of teaching and coaching. There was much hardship during his life, but his stories never reflected that. Some of his stories were told with tears in his eyes while trying not to get emotional, but he was so thankful for what he had been given and for his Lord above that was always with him. While you are listening, you don’t realize but you are learning manners, respect, appreciation, love, and faith. His stories had a point–life is good, live it right, be kind to others, and have faith. Coach Jimmy’s faith showed every day–the way he lived and the way he treated others. He didn’t have to tell you about his love for a higher God; it was evident in his speech and actions. I still think of Coach Jimmy often and that wonderful summer I got to spend so much time with him.”
Coach Matt Brown ’97 recalls, “As with all of our coaches at that time, our character was of utmost importance. Coach Gentry took every opportunity to instruct us in qualities like humility, kindness, and determination. He always did it with humor or a story in a way that made you feel loved, not talked down to. I
Coach Gentry coached and taught at Brentwood Academy from 1976 through the early 1990’s
Coach Gentry coached and taught at Brentwood Academy from 1976 through the early 1990’s, although he continued to assist with coaching through 1998, then again with Coach Flatt from 2002-2006, and once again assisting Coach Flatt with middle school football from 2009-2014. In his last stretch of coaching middle school linemen, although he was losing strength and mobility, he still came out to practice every day to coach but brought a stool with him so he could sit.
was deeply impacted by the love, humility, wisdom, and character he displayed daily. Even as a teenager, I knew I wanted to grow into the kind of man who displayed these as well as he did. The qualities that stand out most with Coach Gentry’s communication style are his incredible storytelling ability, his humor, and the simple principles of character that he worked into everything. For some reason, one of my most vivid memories of him is what he did the few times someone got the hiccups in class. He would immediately stop class, pull $2 or $3 from his pocket, and lay them on the desk. He would tell the person, ‘If you can hiccup again, I’ll give you that money.’ And no one was ever able to do it. As middle schoolers, we felt like we were witnessing magic.”
A common sentiment among those who share memories of their relationship with Coach Gentry: it is difficult to put his impact on their lives and on the lives of their families into words. “Words cannot express what I felt about Coach Jimmy and what I learned from him,” states Mrs. Payne. “Those months
working with Coach Jimmy were some of the best months that I and my kids have experienced. Coach Jimmy was kind, patient, and encouraging. He would sit with me and my children and tell stories and pass on life lessons that you didn’t even realize you were getting at the time. My kids still say, ‘don’t take the last biscuit.’”
Similarly, Mrs. Sharon Wade Kinser ’86 notes, “His impact on me is hard to put into words, but in summary it’s almost like he was like a grandfather I never had.” Mrs. Kinser continues, “For me it is a layered scroll through memories spanning over 35 years. It all began when I was in 7th grade at Brentwood Academy as one of Coach Gentry’s students. Next, I was able to attend the summer camp at Gentry farm and spend time with Coach Gentry outside of the classroom/school setting. This went on for several years until I later became a counselor at the camp as well. Being able to spend time alongside Coach was a gift. The un-air-conditioned days filled with sweat, laughter, games, art, and learning about farm life were some of the best memories I have for those years. After graduating college and moving back to the area, I was fortunate enough to visit Coach regularly. It was incredible watching his artistic ability provide a pathway to unlock and express sensitive memories he kept deeply stored. Lastly, both of my children were able to form their own special relationship with
Coach through the camps, farm visits, baseball, and other shared interests. He certainly holds a special place in all of our hearts.” Reflecting on the impact of Coach Gentry on so many people, Mrs. Kinser concludes, “Coach touched thousands of lives and many deeper than mine. I don’t think my stories are anything special; I just think my timeframe spans across more decades than most.”
While many BA faculty heard Mr. Gentry speak multiple times over the years, each occasion remained captivating because of his ability to paint a picture with words, often encouraging his listeners to follow along by reminding them, “Now, stay with me.” Generations of BA students, far removed from his life experiences, stayed right with Coach Gentry through his stories as they learned and benefited from his wisdom and faith. Coach Gentry earned the ability to impact the development of the character of others because of his own character that was built through his faith, his resilience when faced with personal suffering and the suffering of others, his ability to solve problems through hard work and creativity, and his gift of thoughtful communication as he shared his life experiences with truth and kindness. Coach Gentry left a legacy of character that will always stay with us.
“Coach Gentry was good,” recalls Coach Carlton Flatt, former Brentwood Academy football coach. “He concentrated, he had something to do, and he went out and did it. He was able to take different kinds of people, put them together, and create a situation where they could be successful. He was able to do so many things well, so that’s one thing that drew me to him. He could help you in any way. He just got along with everyone. He pulled people together. Even before he got to BA, he didn’t just do it his way. He would think it might be best to involve some eighth graders, maybe some 10th graders, maybe some seniors. He covered a wide range of people, and I wanted him to be on my team more than anything.”
After seeing a picture of himself with Coach Ray Dalton and Coach Gentry, Coach Flatt reflected, “I wondered how in the world did I ever get beat having helpers like I did. Gave me such confidence.” Former BA faculty member Mrs. Judy Flatt, remembering some of the earlier years of coaching, added, “I remember one game in particular; we were up in Kentucky at one point. We were playing a really good team, and the opponent’s coaches came out with matching shirts and everything, and then out comes Carlton with the toboggan cap with a hole in it, Jimmy Gentry, Ray Dalton, and others, all looking hodgepodge, but BA won!
This was in the late ’80s, maybe early ’90s. The toboggan was Carlton’s signature hat. Ray wore a toboggan cap too. They finally got matching shirts at one point, but it didn’t happen for a while.”
“I remember Carlton saying how Jimmy could be pretty stubborn,” recalled Mrs. Flatt. “There were three stubborn men. They called Carlton iron-headed. Anyway, he would tell Jimmy that he wanted such and such done, and he would act like he would agree with him, and then Jimmy would do what he wanted.” Coach Flatt replied, “Yeah. I know. But I would do the same thing. When Jimmy did it his way and it came out ok, I left him alone. I’d shut my mouth and walk off. It was a fun group to have because you didn’t have to worry about hurting their feelings.” Mrs. Flatt remembered fondly, “They all had such mutual respect for each other. The camaraderie was so strong that we would all take trips together. We would really have a lot of fun. After the home games I’d have everyone over to the house (coaches and wives) and have pizzas or Subway sandwiches and hang out and talk about the game. If we lost, no. The coaches’ wives would all ride together for the games. I got
“Everybody loved Jimmy... He was like family.”
to know Rebecca Gentry, Betty Dalton, Bari Jacobs, and Ann Harris really well. We all had a wonderful time because we’d all go out to eat a nice dinner together before the game.”
While reminiscing about Coach Gentry, Mrs. Flatt brought out some drawings, noting that Coach Gentry often created humorous drawings for his close friends. One of these drawings depicts a moment after Coach Flatt had driven through a blizzard to get to a hotel while on vacation on New Year’s Eve, and he couldn’t wait to get back to the room to watch the football game. When Coach Flatt arrived at the elevator in the hotel lobby, with Mrs. Flatt standing with their daughters Lisa and Lara, Coach Flatt jumped to hit the arrow pointing up instead of pressing the button to call the elevator. After hearing this humorous story, Coach Gentry recorded it in a drawing to capture the moment for the Flatt family. Coach Gentry also illustrated the pictures lining the training room at Brentwood Academy, along with the pictures in his book An American Life, using his artistic ability to document stories throughout his life.
“He could help you in any way. He just got along with everyone. He pulled people together.”
Mrs. Judy Flatt added, “Jimmy was one of Carlton’s best friends, and we know that he loved God, he loved his country that he served during WWII, loved his family, loved his friends, and loved being around people and telling stories and hootenannies. He was always very outgoing. Those hootenannies were the events we had at his barn on his farm–the Kennedy brothers would come out and entertain and bring out some big name entertainers, all have a pitch-in dinner. It started with the coaches and their wives and was really small and just grew and grew. He’d meet someone on the street in Franklin and say, ‘Hey, if you aren’t doing anything, why don’t you come to the hootenanny.’”
The Flatt family also remembers how Coach Gentry loved his farm (dubbed “West Heaven” by singer Amy Grant) and shared it with others through his summer camps, strawberry picking, and most recently, the fall pumpkin patch. “One of Coach Gentry’s favorite spots on the farm was the falls, and they put a picnic table back there,” commented Mrs. Flatt. “We would often visit Coach Gentry on Sunday afternoons, and one afternoon Coach Gentry took both of us on his 4-wheeler back to the falls. He was in his 90s then!” Mrs. Flatt also remembers that children were really drawn to Coach Gentry because “he was really good with them, and he would draw pictures for the kids.” Lara Flatt and her daughter Riley also remembered how Coach Gentry would welcome them to his farm and would let them fish and camp, with many memories made with Coach Gentry over the years.
“Everybody loved Jimmy,” said Mrs. Flatt. “He was very easygoing and friendly. Jimmy liked to joke and tease a lot; he was a lot of fun.” Coach Flatt concluded, “He was like family.”
The City of Franklin, TN honored Gentry with the unveiling of a bronze statue April 1, 2024, called, “The Lost Heros Memorial.”
SPECIAL PROJECTS
ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENTS
Our student athletes are benefiting from some exciting improvements because of the vision and generous support of several families.
Baseball Field/Turf
“I like how the turf is a lot truer than a dirt infield. I also like how smoothly I am able to slide without tearing my knees and elbows up.” - Will Rooney ’26
“Having turf this year allowed us to be able to practice and play games when few other schools could. The decreased amount of time that the coaches and players had to spend on field maintenance was also a blessing. It allowed everyone to get home 30-45 minutes earlier than in previous years.” - Coach Michael Brown
Soccer Lights
“We are incredibly excited to add lights to our soccer field. The lights will allow us to host games on our own field at the end of the middle school season and at the start of the boys’ varsity season that we would otherwise have to play somewhere else. We already play on one of the best fields in the state of Tennessee, and the addition of lights will only solidify that status. The players are thrilled as well to be able to play games under the lights!” - Coach Phil Masters ’06

“I am excited to announce that with the help of generous BA alums, parents, former parents, and friends of the program that we were able to complete a $300,000 renovation to the 20-year-old locker room. The ‘facelift’ consisted of 104 new lockers, a wall dedicated to the BA professional players, a memory wall dedicated to the history of BA football, and BA logos throughout the room. We also added recent photos and new carpet to round out the project.” - Coach Paul Wade

“We are excited for the new Nutrition Fueling Station that was built this summer in The Rock Strength and Conditioning Facility and are grateful to BA parent Brandon Jenkins for building out the space. We’ve partnered with Nutrishop and will feature ready-to-drink protein recovery shakes as well as protein bars. These will be of the highest nutritional value and will allow for optimal nutritional recovery and timing after workouts. Through our partnership with Nutrishop, ALL BA students can schedule a free nutrition and supplement consultation as well as an In Body scan with a certified professional at their store location. This is going to take our program to the next level!”

MEMORIAL TEACHER GRANTS
Each year, faculty members are offered the opportunity to apply for and receive grants that have been established to honor and memorialize two former Brentwood Academy employees for their dedication to Brentwood Academy’s mission.
Charlotte Callis Grant
Long-time teaching faculty members Mrs. Janet Laws (Fine Arts) and Mrs. Bonnie Hall (Mathematics) are the recipients of the Charlotte Sherrif Callis Memorial Teacher Enrichment Grants.
Charlotte, a 1984 BA graduate and a member of our business office staff, had a long history with our school. Her family was integral in the establishment of Brentwood Academy, with her father serving as a founding board member. After her death, her family established the grant to honor Charlotte’s memory and add joy to the lives of BA faculty.
Mrs. Laws will attend a weeklong creative art retreat in Tuscany, Italy with instruction by Jeanne Oliver where she will follow her own advice by immersing herself in the creative process in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Mrs. Hall traveled to Turks and Caicos to seek reconnection and rejuvenation. There, she will kayak, paddleboard, sail, and snorkel, reconnecting with
God by removing the distractions of life and work and concentrating on growth and restoration.
Cindy Tripp Grant
The Cindy Tripp Memorial Endowment Grants are given in memory of Mrs. Cindy Tripp—former Dean of Faculty and an esteemed educator who was an integral part of the BA community for almost 30 years.
In the spirit of her mission “to aid in the flourishing of others,” the Cindy Tripp Memorial Endowment Grants are awarded to BA faculty and staff who develop a unique plan to enrich their personal and professional experience. Recipients also take part in an interview with a committee of their peers.
This year’s recipients are Mr. Matt Nygren (Fine Arts) and Coach James Wilhoit (History).
Mr. Nygren’s experience will include rejuvenating his love of golf by purchasing new golf clubs and receiving lessons from a professional golf instructor. He hopes to use this as a form of exercise and stress relief. Mr. Nygren also looks forward to the challenge of redeveloping his golf skills and compares learning golf to his years of becoming a seasoned trumpet player.
Coach Wilhoit is excited to travel to California and drive along part of the Pacific Coast Highway. He fondly
remembers a trip to California with his parents as a child and would like to re-explore some of the towns and attractions he saw on that trip years ago. He plans to use this opportunity to relax, recharge, and reflect while reconnecting with positive family memories from his childhood.

Grandparents’ Day 2024
What a treat to host one of our biggest gatherings of BA grandparents yet for our annual Grandparents’ Day Celebration! The April morning began with a glimpse into a day in the life of a BA student with various stations set up in the dining hall for grandparents to visit, including Academics, Athletics, Christian Life, College Counseling, Fine Arts, Robotics, and Student Support. BA grandparents were also given the opportunity to tour campus. Later in the morning, host grandparents John and Sue Gering welcomed guests to the main program where grandparents enjoyed student performances, videos, speeches, and athletic updates. The program wrapped up with a special time of prayer with students praying over their grandparents. After the program, grandparents visited classrooms, met teachers, explored campus, and took commemorative photos with their grandchildren.

SUPPORTING THE
Mission
Brentwood Academy’s continued growth and success is due to the generous giving of parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Because of each donor, we are able to fulfill BA’s mission to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God. Thank you to all our donors and the many ways they offer support to Brentwood Academy.
Opportunities to Give:
THE BA FUND
A gift to the BA Fund results in a direct impact on the daily operations and programs at Brentwood Academy. Annual gifts help bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of a Brentwood Academy education.
CAPITAL GIFTS
Captial giving invests in the future of Brentwood Academy by supporting special projects and improvements. Donations fund initiatives such as facility expansions, renovations, technology upgrades, and campus enhancements, ensuring that BA can provide top-level experiences for current students as well as future students.
ENDOWMENT GIFTS
Gifts to Brentwood Academy Endowed Funds provide income to BA in perpetuity. They are a source of long-term financial stability for the school and its mission, ensuring that future generations of students continue to benefit from a high-quality education.
IRA ROLL OVERS
After 70.5 years of age, income tax generated by mandatory income distributions from IRAs can be avoided by giving a gift directly from the IRA to Brentwood Academy.
MATCHING GIFTS
Company matches can double or even triple the impact of a gift to Brentwood Academy. Many companies have a matching gift program, and experts estimate that billions of dollars in matching gift funds are unclaimed each year. Asking a company’s HR department to see if a matching gift program exists or might be considered can result in the increased impact of any gift.
ALUMNI BRICKS
We invite Brentwood Academy alumni and parents of alumni to participate in BA’s Alumni Garden by purchasing an alumni brick to honor a BA alum. Each brick symbolizes the foundation and the path taken by our Brentwood Academy graduates. Every brick purchased is inscribed with the alum’s name and graduation year. The bricks are a focal point of the garden and a beautiful way to recognize one’s time at BA.
PLANNED GIFTS
The generosity of those who create an enduring legacy through giving to Brentwood Academy will guarantee that BA can pursue its mission for the benefit of generations to come. BA’s Vivat Veritas Society honors individuals and families who have made planned gifts of any size to benefit Brentwood Academy. Many donors choose to remember the school through their estate plans or other deferred giving arrangements. Planned gifts, such as bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance policies, retirement plan assets, or real estate make a significant impact while providing tax benefits and a lasting legacy. BA’s team is ready to work with individuals, financial advisors, or attorneys, in confidence and without obligation, to help explore and achieve personal, financial, and philanthropic goals.
PRAYER
Support Brentwood Academy through the power of prayer. Lift up BA students, faculty, staff, and leadership in prayer, asking for guidance, wisdom, and blessings as we strive to fulfill BA’s mission of nurturing and challenging each whole person - body, mind, and spirit - to the glory of God.
On March 26, Brentwood Academy launched the second annual Alumni Day of Giving. This 24-hour online fundraising event served to bring alumni and parents of alumni together to celebrate and support the BA Fund by offering an opportunity for these donors to contribute to a common goal.
New this year, each graduating class competed against one another – based on class participation – for bragging rights and the opportunity to win a swag bag from the Alumni Office. “It was so fun to watch the Class of 1973, who had just recently celebrated their 50th class reunion a few months prior, work together to ‘win’ the competition,” said Kelly Smith, Assistant Director of Development.
The Alumni Day of Giving pushed our alumni giving to over $100,000 from over 200 donors, with 88% of gifts coming from alumni and 17% from parents of alumni. Alumni from ten states made gifts during the Alumni Day of Giving.
Next year’s giving day will be renamed to reflect the interest in giving from our parents of alumni. On April 15, 2025, we will launch our first Alumni and Parent of Alumni Day of Giving.
Alumni share why they chose to
be a part of the
Alumni Day of Giving.
“I give back to Brentwood Academy because of our unwavering mission to nurture the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, to the Glory of God. It was true 30 years ago, and it is still true today as we watched our son, Jack, graduate in the class of 2023. The relationships I developed with classmates, teammates, coaches, and families while at BA, as a student and again as a parent, are some of my longest, dearest, and most cherished. I want every student and family who is part of our community to have that experience. Giving back is one way to show my gratitude for the legacy Brentwood Academy has given me, my parents, my husband, and now my children, and to ensure it continues for future generations.”
Terri Bolden Ward ’93
“In a world of shifting values, I give with great gratitude as an alum to contribute to the growth and success of BA and a Christian education.”
“Brentwood Academy was an amazing experience for both me and my wife. We built skills and knowledge during our time there that set our lives off in a fantastic way, allowing us to achieve goals that would not have been attainable at other schools. I want that for current students and, one day, my own children. We make it a priority to give so that the school can continue to follow its mission and thrive into the next decades to come.”
“The contribution that Brentwood Academy made to the foundational years of our kids, Meredith ’16 and Alex ’23, encompassing the triangle of body, mind, and spirit, continues to impact their lives after graduation. We believe in the mission, purpose, and vision of BA and the opportunity for community that it creates. Our reaction is to support and participate in this community with our giving of time and financial gifts.”

BAPA DONATIONS TO BA IN THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR:
Purchased a new van for BA faculty and staff to use. This was an asset to all of those who do not have a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), enabling all teachers and coaches to have access to an additional form of transportation for their students and athletes.
Purchased leather ESV study Bibles for all upper school students in a Bible class.
Provided Bibles for all middle school students to use in morning devotions.
Helped fund the upper school grade level trips. The cost was fully covered for students to attend off-campus experiences which not only served as a day away from the classroom, but also an opportunity to build relationships.
Provided weekly breakfast for BA dads.
Provided money for the freshman and senior classes to have Homecoming dinners on campus.
Funded a lunch, food, coffee truck, and other treats for Teacher Appreciation Week, along with multiple breakfasts, snack bars, and an end of the year lunch for faculty and staff.
Provided funding for school spirit items to encourage our student body to attend and support our athletes at games, matches, and meets.
Provided money for each student in the school to experience a communitybuilding grade level event in both the fall and the spring.
Provided money for all students to receive locker treats the first week of school.
Provided our senior class with the funding for Senior Survivor, Senior Breakfast, Homecoming decorations, and multiple snacks, treats, and meals on their Senior Trip.
Purchased t-shirts for all rising seniors.
Made a $20,000 donation to support The Covenant School from the proceeds of the 2023 Barn Bash.
Hosted by BAPA in April at The Loveless Barn, The Brentwood Academy Barn Bash is always a highlight of the school year! It is always exciting to see a mix of current families, alumni and even new parents who are joining us in the coming school year. More than 300 guests enjoyed a wonderful reception, dinner, live auction, and a fantastic line-up of some of Nashville’s best songwriters, including current BA parent Dave Turnbull, parent of four BA alums Brett James (Cornelius) and Jim Collins. BA alum and parent Scott Holmes ’91, along with fellow BA parent Blake Fulton, kept the audience laughing in
their role as emcees and auctioneers. In addition to the entertainment, at the BA Barn Bash is a great time for community building and learning more about how BA has impacted students and families beyond their academic experience. Thank you to event chairs Leigh Ann Witt, Deanna Cornelius, their entire committee, and all the volunteers who worked so hard to create such a memorable evening. Lastly, thank you to our families and guests who purchased tables, tickets, and auction items. The money raised will help fund all the wonderful activities and items BAPA provides to the BA community.
Innovation and Arts Center
LEARNING SPACES FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP, ROBOTICS, FINANCE, AND ARTS
As Brentwood Academy continues to develop its campus through the Forward in Faith vision, there is a unique and time-sensitive opportunity to meet the need for more learning spaces and to provide dedicated space for our innovative programs.
We invite donors to invest in a new 6,300-square-foot addition that will provide four new spaces. This two-story addition to the upper school, extending west toward the Quad, will provide two classrooms on each floor. In response to student requests, we have also incorporated a balcony into the design, providing a space for relationship building, which is so important to the student experience at BA. With donor support, these new spaces will enhance learning beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Business and Entrepreneurship Center
This learning space will facilitate our vision to deepen our students’ understanding of a biblical perspective on business, entrepreneurship, and financial stewardship. The center will be home to business-related courses, including a middle school entrepreneurship exploratory, an upper school business entrepreneurship elective, and AP Economics.
This will also serve as a space for co-curricular student engagement through experiences such as student investment and business formation clubs. A key part of student learning will be their engagement with BA alums and parents who will serve as guest speakers, workplace visit hosts, and internship mentors. All students, including those unfamiliar with business and entrepreneurship concepts, will benefit from this program.
Middle School Robotics Lab
BA’s Iron Eagles Robotics Program is the most decorated in Tennessee, and this year it boasts 60 students and 10 coaches. This new home for middle school robotics provides a dedicated space to collaborate. It will free up the 8th grade den, allowing the den to serve its intended purpose of helping create community and build relationships, which are the heart
of a BA education. Students in the robotics program learn skills, including teamwork, programming, iterative design documentation, and electrical and mechanical design. BA’s robotics programs truly encourage innovation and inspire a passion for teamwork and technology.
Visual Art Classrooms
In these two new classrooms, students with abilities of all levels will learn the fundamentals of art, explore the elements and principles of design, and develop their artistic gifts. Students engaged in visual arts gain improved verbal, reading, and math skills and show a greater capacity for analyzing data and problem-solving. BA offers a wide array of visual art opportunities, including drawing, painting, printmaking, digital design, photography, sculpture, and ceramics.
The classrooms will provide modern learning spaces and allow for the demolition of the current art house in preparation for the new entrance and future campus development.

OF PHILANTHROPY Celebration
The Vaco offices provided a sleek and modern backdrop on a Sunday afternoon in March for Brentwood Academy to celebrate and thank our leadership donors. Guests enjoyed wonderful hors d’oeuvres and fellowship. Curt Masters shared updates about the school and a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has provided. We want all our donors to know how grateful we are for each of you!
April 12 was an exciting day on campus as community leaders, neighbors, parents, and students gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the next phase of Brentwood Academy’s “Forward in Faith” vision.
After a welcome and prayer from Head of School Mr. Curt Masters, selected students and faculty shared scripture and thoughts on the significance of the upcoming campus enhancements before key Brentwood Academy and community leaders used branded shovels to break ground.
“This is a significant day in Brentwood Academy history as we honor those who helped build the foundation of BA, and at the same time, we look toward this exciting time of progress and growth,” Curt Masters shared.
The campus additions include a new main entrance on Granny White Pike, a new chapel, and an additional 60 parking spaces. The entrance/exit with a traffic light will be at the intersection of Virginia Way and Granny White Pike, making traffic flow more efficient and offering families and
visitors a more visible and safe welcome to campus. This also allows for the much-needed addition of 60 parking spaces on the grounds.
The enclosed glass and timber chapel, located next to the middle school, will seat 175 people and provide a place for student and parent Bible studies, worship nights, parent events, student gatherings, and professional development.
“Each of these campus enhancements will allow us to better serve our student and parent communities as well as visitors to campus.” - Curt Masters.
Construction was well underway before the end of school.
If you’d like more information on any of these projects, please reach out to Curt Masters, Head of School, or Jason Powell, Director of Development.
The Brentwood Academy community’s legacy of generous giving is the foundation of what our BA families experience today. As we celebrate God’s faithfulness in bringing the BA family together, we are so appreciative to each of our families who not only pay tuition, but also to the many donors who sacrificially give above and beyond to uphold the BA mission to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind and spirit – to the glory of God.
BA ended the 2023-2024 school year with strong re-enrollment and a completely full 6th grade class (Class of 2031) who are just beginning their BA journey.
These charts illustrate BA’s budget for the 2024-2025 academic year. Thank you for your partnership, trust, and support that continues to propel Brentwood Academy forward.
Brentwood Academy gratefully acknowledges the following donors for gifts during the 2023-2024 fiscal year in support of the mission and ministry of BA. If you have made a donation in the current school year, your donation will be noted in next year’s report. Every effort has been made to ensure that all published information is true and accurate. Please inform Director of Development Jason Powell or Gifts Manager Lee Lee Robinson of any errors or omissions, and please accept our sincere apologies.

ADMISSION DAY
For more than 50 years, Brentwood Academy has served students in grades 6 through 12. Students are taught and coached by faculty who are experts in their field and serious about their faith, driven by the mission to nurture and challenge each whole person – body, mind, and spirit – to the glory of God.
