Meet Our New Brentwood Chamber Executive

Harry York Kathi Reed, President of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, announced the hiring of a new Chamber CEO. Harry York is the former Executive Vice President of the Concord, California Chamber, and CEO of the Reno-Sparks, Nevada Chamber. Reed noted, “We are extremely pleased to bring Harry on as our executive to assist the Chamber and or community in these times of economic Photo courtesy of Ruth Roberts of the Brentwood Press change. With his experience and background he will be able to help us move the Brentwood Chamber to a new level of involvement in the community and the region. We set a very full agenda for Harry as soon as he arrived, introducing him around to the Chamber and Community leadership.”

Chamber speaks out on Proposed City Zoning Ordinance At the March 25th Brentwood City Council meeting, Chamber President Kathi Reed raised the Chamber’s concerns regarding a proposed City ordinance that would require all new businesses to obtain a Zoning Approval Certificate when applying for a City business license. Along with the required process is a proposed one-time fee of $182 in addition to the business license fee. The City is also proposing increasing the Home Occupation Use Permit from $50 to $117. After hearing from other Chamber members and new Chamber CEO Harry York about business concerns regarding the proposed changes, the City Council unanimously voted to postpone any action until the Chamber and the City staff sit down and review the various issues. The Chamber will inform the membership of future developments.

The Brentwood Farmers’ Market will begin on Saturday, May 10 in Downtown Brentwood! York, who retired from the Reno-Sparks Chamber in late 2006 stated, “I am excited about the opportunity to be able to return home and be able to do what I love to do, be part of growing a community and helping businesses of all sizes prosper. My first priorities will be to expand the great business networking opportunities the Chamber currently offers, update the internal organization of the Chamber, and get the Chamber very involved in governmental activities at all levels.” Search Committee Chair Karen Spann remarked, “We are very lucky to land not only a very experienced chamber executive, but someone who grew up, worked in, and knows our region very well. He will help all our businesses grow and succeed.” York is married to Sharon, has two sons, John and David, and two daughters, Christina, a senior at St. Mary’s College, and Ashley, a freshman at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Creative Writer Carma Dutra Imparts Useful Information at Business Luncheon Valuable advice was taken to heart by members of the business community as Carma Dutra of “Carma’s Word” shared tips that can easily be put into action whether your business is large or small. Attendees had many positive things to say about this information that everyone can use in their daily business life. Comments included: 1. Most important to me was the information regarding business card and brochure content. 2. I learned that 80% of interest is from “headline.” Three to five seconds will grab a reader’s attention. I will use this information for my business, as well as for my clients who are either writing content for a website or in a profile, etc. 3. Well done! Well covered! Most useful to me was the information on how to create better “grabbing” headlines. Thank you, Carma, for your motivating and inspiring presentation! Carma Dutra can be reached at 925-625-4142. (by Lori Knudsen of California Payroll) Questions for Better Interviewing One way to waste less time in doing applicant interviews — and at the same time improve the quality of your hiring decisions — is to ask applicants good questions. You can improve the value of what you learn in an interview by taking time to prepare productive questions. Don’t ask questions just to ask questions and have a pleasant social conversation. Ask only questions that will do the following:

1. Questions that will relax the applicant. When the applicant is relaxed and comfortable with you, he or she will often be more open, off-guard, and more likely to tell you more. Example: What’s the most exciting or most enjoyable work you’ve done? What about it did you enjoy most? Answers to these two questions may also give you clues to the applicant’s behavior/performance style. (See #4 below.)

2. Questions that will cause some stress for the applicant. If the job requires dealing with stress, have two, three or four questions that surprise the applicant and that, possibly, create a little discomfort...to see how well the applicant deals with unexpected stress. Example: If the applicant’s response to the two questions above (about the most exciting or most enjoyable work) reveal a type of work different from the position the applicant is interviewing for...ask this follow-up question...Why don’t you pursue this type of work instead of applying for this position? Another example: What will your three most recent supervisors tell us about your job-related weaknesses and problems?

3. Questions that will verify facts you already know about the applicant, and questions that will give you facts you can verify in background checks. Example: Ask specific questions about work history, and breaks in the work history. Ask questions to verify and clarify information and statements given on the application form or in the applicant’s resume.

4. Question that give you clues to the applicant’s behavior/performance style. Know in advance the kind of behavior/performance style the job needs, such as: a stable, steady worker, not a talker, not a socializer. Example: Ask an open-ended question that invites the applicants to reveal themselves. What about you and your work and life experiences would help us believe you will perform this position well? Another example: What’s the most boring job you’ve ever had? How long did you have it? What made this job boring for you? What did you do to keep yourself reporting to work for this boring job? Another example: What do you do to have fun? What kind of volunteer activities have you done or are you currently involved in? Tell us about why you’ve done this.

5. Questions that give clues to the applicant’s attitude toward work, work ethic, reliability and willingness to do the job. Example: Think about your three most recent jobs. Where do you see you could have improved in your work-related performance and skills? The response may also give you information you can verify with previous supervisors. Another example: What would your last two employers or supervisors tell us about your job attendance and your punctuality? Approximately how many days of work did you miss in your last two jobs, not counting your approved vacation and sick leave? This response also may give you information you can verify with previous supervisors.

6. Questions that give you clues to the applicant’s attitude toward coworkers and supervisors, the applicant’s likelihood of getting along with others on the job. Example: Tell me about the strengths and weaknesses of your previous supervisors. Listen for criticisms of previous supervisors and managers, and for criticisms of previous workplaces. A pattern of past unhappy relationships can be a prediction of continued unhappy relationships in new jobs.

7. Questions that deal with the essential job functions and job qualifications given in the job description. Example: A job duty in this position is to efficiently assemble boxes for shipping a 3-ring binder. Tell us what you have done in the past that especially qualifies you to do this. Then give the applicant an opportunity to demonstrate this ability.

8. Two key questions that help you decide if the applicant really fits the job: First, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all and 10 being excellent, how would you rate this position? Then the follow-up question: What type of work (or what other type of work) would you give a 10 to? The answers to these two questions will indicate whether or not the applicant’s interests really fit the job. If the applicant gives your job a "6"...but gives another kind of work a "10"...the odds are that in time this person will not be happy in the job you have open.

9. Another question that helps you decide if the applicant fits the job: If we don’t hire you, where will you most likely end up working? What type of work will you be doing? If the answer describes work that is different from the position you have open, the applicant may not be a good fit for your job.

Shadow Lakes Golf Club hosts March Mixer in their new Event Center

Business Card Drawing Winner: Pictured above right are: host Ron Parish of Shadow Lakes/Deer Ridge Golf Clubs and winner Rusti Woodruff of Boresha, An Exotic Coffee. Happy golfing, Rusti!

No one can transform a “cart barn” into an exquisite event center quite like Shadow Lakes has done. Although we had a large crowd at this mixer, there was plenty of room to roam. The new event center is perfect for large weddings, meetings and, in fact, our Employee Appreciation Luncheon which will be held there on April 23! If you missed this mixer, stop by and check out the decor and the special lighting. It’s functional and charming. Thank you, Shadow Lakes, for hosting this great mixer! Below left, President-Elect Karen Spann of the Monthly Grapevine announces the winner of the $112 Share-the-Pot money. Lucky new member Renee Woodruff of MAP held the winning raffle ticket! Renee is pictured below right showing the money! Congratulations, Renee!

Super Volunteer Bill Putman of Delta Community Services, Inc. is shown presenting winner Sal Cutino (of East County Woodworks) free tickets to the Chili Cook-Off and Auction to be held May 17 at the Community Center. After a “losing streak,” the often lucky Mr. Cutino suddenly roared, “I’m back!” And, indeed, Mr. Lucky will be eating great chili at the Cook-Off! Alternate Director John Fink of Delta Ranches and Homes will also be going to the Chili Cook-Off for free! We’re happy for you! A big thank you to all the generous Chamber Members who donated raffle prizes! We appreciate you!

Bob Nugent of MAP is pictured at left with Realtor Sandi Carson. Sandi held the winning ticket for a free hour of consulting with MAP. Bob will be our guest speaker at the Business Luncheon on April 8. Make your reservation at the Chamber office by April 4. (Sign-up sheet on page 9 of this newsletter.)
