Page 2 CHAMBER HOURS Is anyone still cleaning the champagne flutes and dusting the confetti off the floor? Of course not! 2010 is in full swing, and we’re already looking forward to the summer. This year has already presented quite a few changes and opportunities, and for me, the invitation to join the Board of Directors for the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce has been one of the most flattering and fulfilling to date. For the first few months of this new year, I chose to develop myself by attending sales training and marketing conferences, and the thing that continues to strike me is how many people are still saying that good sales people don’t sell on price. That goes back to Selling 101: someone will always sell the same thing for less, so you better be able to differentiate yourself and your business on something else. For me, it’s been exceptional customer service and an outstanding experience with California Payroll. But something struck me during all this professional growth…if people don’t have the money to spend, then they are going to buy on price! It seems pretty basic. If I need something and only have $5 to spend on it, no matter how great you tell me the value-adds are at your company, I can’t spend $7! It’s wonderful to differentiate yourself and your business by the value you add, but in today’s economy, we all need to know what our clients can afford to pay! I’m excited to take this opportunity to share my thoughts with other business people because I believe that this economy gives us the opportunity to really understand what our customers’ needs are and provide them true solutions. My clients need affordable payroll and HR services, and I strive to make that available to them while also providing exceptional customer service! I believe that being in touch with the needs of my customers is how I can win their business and their loyalty. Does that make me different than the norm? How are you differentiating yourself today? And now imagine a world where you, as a customer, walked into any buying situation and were treated with respect. The sales person listened to your needs. Then he/she provided you what you said you needed for a price that was within your budget. Would you buy? Would you tell other people? I would. And I have. So for the remainder of 2010, I’m going to listen to people. And if price is a motivating factor (if not the MOST IMPORTANT) driving force to making a buying decision, I’m going to respect that. And I’m still going to add my value, too. That’s the only way I know how to do business. Lori Knudsen California Payroll 1240 Central Blvd. Ste. Hello Brentwood!!!! I’m Maurice J. Daroy, a local Farmers Insurance Agent and Ambassador for our Brentwood Chamber of Commerce. My Chamber life started back in 1998 as a new member attending everything under the sun. Mixers after Mixers, Ribbon Cuttings after Ribbon Cuttings it’s been wonderful meeting new and old members month after month. For 2009 I was asked “Hey, Wanta be a Chamber Ambassador?” Without hesitation “Yea!” Then I started thinking about ……. What’s a Chamber Ambassador? It’s the opportunity to become more involved in our community, a chance to meet new people and make more friends. It’s a door opener for new conversations and new relationships whether business or just casual. So is there really a value in being a “Chamber Ambassador”? Oh you bet there is, just ask any Ambassador. There’s really something to be said about our Chamber, it has a positive buzz to it. From way back to when it was just our dear Bonnie, to now with a full staff and more. It’s been a blessing watching the Chamber grow from about 300 members to nearly doubling that. Now a little about me, I’m a father of three wonderful boys Reese (16), Dustin (13) and Ryan (10). I have a beautiful wife Angela Marie, my High School sweetheart and best friend for over 20 years. I have a mad passion for wheels, whether its motorcycles or bicycles; if you can fall off it I want to ride it! Oh did I mention I have a local Insurance Agency? It’s called the Delta Valley Insurance Agency located right here in Brentwood. So for all of your insurance needs, think of me Maurice J. Daroy, LUTCF your local Farmers Insurance Agent. I’ve been serving Brentwood and the rest of California for the last 13 years. Maurice J. After recommendations from the Chamber’s Business Development Committee the Chamber Board of Directors took action on the following issues: To Support the “City of Brentwood Initiative Adopting a Voter Approved Urban Limit Line.” The city limit line adjustment is to include 700+ acres of land area to the west of Heritage High School, to the south of Balfour, and east of Deer Valley Road. The passage of this initiative would bring the land into the control of the City of Brentwood as a Planned Use Development. In the action to support this initiative the Chamber Board made it clear that this is not a blanket support of Urban Limit Line adjustments and that it would look at each adjustment on its own merit.
To Oppose any mandate by the State of California to require withholding tax on Independent Contractors.
To Support SB1335 a California legislative bill that simplifies the establishment of an alternative workweek between employees and employers.
To Support June Ballot Measure, Proposition 17, a measure that allows insurance companies to give a new auto insurance customer credit for their “Good Driving Record” from a previous auto insurer.

What does the Health Care Reform Law mean to your business, to you, and your family? The Chamber has received a number of outlines regarding the two Health Care Bills. We have started a binder of information that the office has received and we are providing you links to some of the information and links to our two Congressional Offices that have links to information on the Health Care Legislation. Some of the Health Reform Laws go into affect right away and some do not go into effect until 2014. The Chamber office has received many inquiries on this subject and hopes this will help answer some of those questions. As more information arrives we will add that information to our Health Care portfolio. Press Release March 25, 2010
Brentwood Chamber of Commerce/Linked Local Brentwood A new Business Alliance has been formed in the Greater Brentwood area to serve local businesses and professionals. The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and Linked Local Brentwood (a subgroup of LinkedIn) have formed this business alliance. The purpose of the new group will be to provide a new informal networking occasion for local business people that centers around the business social networking internet site LinkedIn. The group will hold once a month evening functions, similar to mixers, at various locations around the Far East Contra Costa County. The first “Business After Hours” will be held Thursday, May 6, at 5:30 pm, at Sweeney’s at Oak and First Street in Downtown Brentwood. The Linked Local Brentwood’s membership on www.linkedin.com is the cornerstone of a networking effort with its huge database and ease of use. One of, if not the most important, networks that determine your success both professionally and personally is your local network. It is Linked Local Brentwood’s intention to provide the area’s LinkedIn members with greatly enhanced opportunities to build their connections and networks. Linked Local Brentwood welcomes all LinkedIn members from the greater Contra Costa County, CA area. The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to advance Brentwood businesses through connections in four major areas. Those four areas are Business Advocacy, Business Promotion, Business Training, and Business Networking. The Brentwood Chamber serves both large and small business of all types. Coordinator for the Linked Local Brentwood group, Joe Randall, noted, “This is an excellent opportunity for non Chamber Members to meet Chamber members and the Chamber leadership to discuss the advantages of Chamber membership. Brentwood Chamber CEO, Harry York stated, “I see this as an expanded membership benefit for the Brentwood Chamber Members to connect with other businesses outside of the Chamber.” For more information go to the local LinkedIn Local Brentwood site at: http:// events.linkedin.com/Local-Linked-Brentwood-CA-Live/pub/259425 Chamber’s website: http://www.brentwoodchamber.com/Calendar-Month.28.0.html .
