CORNFEST 2011 A GREAT SUCCESS! The 19th Annual CornFest took place the second weekend in July in its third location in as many years. Despite the challenges this presented for festival Chair Dirk Zeigler and Co-Chair Ken Seamann and the CornFest committee, the event had very few glitches. Crowds were estimated at 40,000 over the three days. The weather was mild, parking and space were plentiful, corn was delicious and the entertainment was one of the best lineups ever. Some favorites were back this year such as the car show and the tractor races, which were not held last year due to limited space in the downtown location. New this year was a heritage area that highlighted Brentwood’s agricultural roots with displays from the East County Historical Society and FFA. There was also a corn recipe contest sponsored by KSFO and the Brentwood Press. The carnival was bigger than ever as California Carnival brought new rides including a 7-story ferris wheel that lit up the night sky right along with the Friday night fireworks extravaganza. This event could not go on without the hundreds of volunteers and nonprofit groups that get involved to make CornFest a success. This year’s CornFest was profitable and the non-profit groups will be sharing in that success with a share of the profits to support the work they do right here in our Brentwood Community. Mark your calendars for CornFest’s 20th Anniversary on July l3th, 14th and 15th, 2012!

Looking for a new and educational way to network at lunch? Come have a N.I.C.E. Lunch at the Chamber (Network, Interact, Connect, and Engage). No more old school brown bags. As a Board, we know that offering programs that provide value for your membership is important. We know many join the Chamber as a way to increase business and exposure to the community. How do you get it though? Well, it is simple… INVOLVEMENT. I know it sounds cliché but it really is true, the more you put into your membership, the more you get out of it. A great way to start getting more involved is taking a break out of your day and have lunch at the Chamber. Once every month the Chamber board and staff work hard to provide what used to be a ―brown bag‖ lunch with a speaker. We want to take this idea to the next level. We have revamped the old brown bags to give you more. We will incorporate a true structured networking aspect to these meetings with tips and ideas to increase your networking. We will continue to have speakers on rotating topics that support the core values of the Chamber – topics will include business development, technology, personal development, local issues and politics, as well as quality of life topics. Our goal is to provide topics that will interest many of our members as well as nonmembers. Additionally we want to tap the resources of our Chamber membership for speakers for these lunchtime events. If you have a topic that you feel would fit into our categories, please let the Chamber staff know so they can forward your ideas and contact information to the appropriate board members. If it weren’t for my involvement with the Chamber, I can honestly say my business would not be where it is today. Barbara Frantz and I formed our law practice at the end of 2009 after a meeting and discussion at a Chamber Mixer. Our business together is better than when we were in business apart. Ambassador's Corner Taking Financial Responsibility: What’s Your Game Plan? How’s your financial strategy coming along? That old adage, ―People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan,‖ can be especially true when it comes to finances. And, given the current economy, the best time to start taking control of your finances is today. Being financially responsible doesn’t just happen. It’s a conscious decision you make to live within your means. Slowly, U.S. consumers may be catching on. A nationwide survey on the financial state of U.S. households, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, found only 13% of households are currently saving 7% or more of their disposable income, although fully 36% of households expect to save at this level in 5 to 10 years. 1 While that trend may be encouraging, there remains ample room for improvement. It’s Never Too Late to Plan No matter what stage of life you’re in, you should have a strategy that helps meet your current financial needs while creating a path to help you reach long-term financial goals. Whether you’re just starting out or nearing retirement, a strategy is necessary, and the good news is no matter what your age, it’s never too late to start. A proactive approach now can help avoid heartaches and disappointments later on. Consider the following scenarios: If you’re single and just starting out, it’s never too soon to start a savings plan. By just saving a small amount today, you can make a huge difference later on. What financial goals can you set today to help make your dreams a reality? If you’re the head of a new household, perhaps with a new baby, how do you protect your family’s standard of living in case anything happens to you or your spouse? If you died today, how would your family manage financially? If you have young children, it’s never too early to start saving for their college expenses. How can you start a college education fund so they won’t be burdened with student loans and can attend the college of their choice? If you’re thinking about retirement, consider what amount of your current income you can allocate into retirement savings vehicles, such as 401(k) plans, IRAs and other investments. With retirement possibly lasting 20 or 30 years, the more resources you have the more likely you’ll be able to enjoy it. Do you want to just get by or be financially comfortable so you can enjoy life with your family and friends? No matter where you are in life, a financial strategy is a necessity. With a proper strategy, you’ll always be in a better position to help achieve your financial goals, whether it’s buying a home, driving a new car or retiring. I am excited to become an Ambassador at our Brentwood Chamber. As a Brentwood resident since 2002 I am eager to serve and participate in seeing our community, families and businesses grow. 1

CalChamber Opposes Workers’ Comp Bill Costing Employers $210 Million
(August 25, 2011) A California Chamber of Commerce-opposed bill that increases employers’ costs by broadening the definition of the types of injuries that qualify workers to receive temporary disability (TD) benefits for an extended timeframe has been placed on the Senate Appropriations Committee suspense file, pending review of the bill’s fiscal impact. AB 947 (Solorio; D-Anaheim) extends the time frame that injured workers may receive TD benefits from 104 weeks to 240 weeks, depending on a physician’s requirements. ―AB 947 adds huge new payroll costs for private and public employers in California while our 12 percent unemployment rate remains among the highest in the nation and government is struggling to protect public services,‖ said CalChamber Policy Advocate Thomas Vu. Last week the state Department of Finance announced its opposition to the bill based on the fiscal impact to the state. California businesses, schools, local governments and the state will pay an additional $210 million annually for workers' compensation TD benefits under AB 947, according to a recently released analysis by the Senate Appropriations Committee. Senate Appropriations published the analysis based on work by staff to the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC). Increased costs of $210 million annually amounts to a 1.5 percent increase *to the $14 billion workers' compensation system, the legislative analysis said. Total paid state workers' compensation costs in 2009–10 were $503 million. Current law includes a number of exceptions under which injured workers may receive TD payments beyond 104 weeks, to a maximum of 240 weeks. The injuries cited in the statutes are very specific and include hepatitis B and C, amputations, severe burns, injuries to the eyes, lung disease and several more. AB 947, however, includes broad provisions—rather than specific types of injuries as under current law—thereby circumventing TD benefit statutes. As written, the bill allows for extending TD benefits to 240 weeks for an injury depending on the requirements of a physician. Although there certainly is a need for the physician to make some type of determination, the allowances for the types of injuries are open-ended. AB 947 is a broadly written bill that would unintentionally include cases where TD payments do not need to be extended to 240 weeks. As a consequence, workers’ compensation costs would increase for all employers, both public and private, at a time when the economic recovery is still frail. It is estimated that AB 947 will have a system wide cost of more than $200 million, of which $8.5 million would have a state impact for employees’ workers’ comp claims. AB 947 will be reviewed by Senate Appropriations at the committee’s next hearing and may be voted off the suspense file and sent to the full Senate for a vote. Contact your senators and members of the Senate Appropriations and urge them to oppose AB 947.

MARSH CREEK CLEANUP Looking for a great volunteer opportunity in our community? Well your chance is right around the corner. Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed is holding its annual Marsh Creek Cleanup event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 17th. Last year over 500 volunteers came out to clean up Marsh Creek and picked up over 5.25 tons of trash over 14 miles of creek.

Lions Club collects these to recycle and sort for distribution to people in need in developing countries. Lions 2nd Annual Walk for Diabetes Awareness September 24th, 2011 The walk will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Creekside Park, on Claremont Dr. and follow Marsh Creek Trail to Veteran’s Park on Balfour Road., then circle back and finish at Creekside Park.
