DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I have had the honor and pleasure of serving on the Board of Directors for the past 2 years. Brentwood is so fortunate to have such a dedicated team of board members and chamber staff who are genuinely concerned with and actively support our ever expanding community. The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce truly understands that in order to have a strong economic environment, you must have a strong, dedicated community that supports and encourages growth and innovative thinking in a positive way and who recognize that we all share in the responsibility of creating economic success and stability as well as a healthy community for leaders, business owners, educators, and private citizens. Our board members and chamber staff volunteer their time and expertise to guide the Chamber’s efforts to make our community a better place to live, conduct business, and raise our families. I did not realize the power of networking as a tool to establish your brand, develop a business reputation, earn the respect of other business professionals, and ultimately grow your business. I have come to develop many great friends, colleagues, clients and referral partners, not only here in our community, but all over the Bay Area. I’ve been able to grow my business network through many of the events the Chamber holds throughout the year. I also have a voice in the community, and get to learn where our community, both from a business and local aspect, is going. I have been an Account Manager for California Payroll for the last 6 ½ years. We are headquartered Brentwood with an office in Southern California. I am very fortunate to work for such a great company and terrific group of co-workers. We provide Payroll Services, Time & Attendance Management and HR Software and Services. In addition to being SAS-70 Certified, we also provide a Worker’s Comp “Pay-As-You-Go” Program, 401K Reporting Services and Training & Customization Services. We also process payroll in all 50 states including Puerto Rico. The differences between us and our national competitors are numerous. Through us, clients can confidently focus on their core competencies because we will consistently, quickly, and effectively meet their ever-changing needs. California Payroll is also involved with many payroll professional groups such as the APA, IPPA, TPG, and NCHRA. Don’t forget to check out our website at www.californiapayroll.com. You can also subscribe to our complimentary bi-weekly eNewsletter. I believe the success of the Chamber is measured by the success of its members. I promise you the Chamber Board and staff will continue to work hard and diligently so that we may all succeed! The Chamber offers wonderful benefits to its members, including email blasts, educational opportunities, business referral services, directory listings, grand openings/ribbon cuttings, to name a few. Take advantage of these great benefits! You’ll be glad you did. I look forward to meeting many of you at the next Chamber event and welcome you to our wonderful community! Lori A. Ambassador's Corner My role as a representative of Paychex, as well as a Chamber Ambassador is to ensure that local small business owners are aware of their responsibilities in regards to hiring and maintaining employees and to provide them a low cost solution for outsourcing those responsibilities. I am here to be a resource for the community and to help educate small business owners on how to stay in compliance with payroll tax liabilities among many other topics. One hot topic that I get questions about daily is human resources; what can I and can’t I do as an employer? Below are eight critical human resource functions that small business owners need to be familiar with. Better Employee Management: Eight Critical Areas for Small-Business Success Hiring, payroll, health care, and retirement benefits; it’s enough to make a small –business owner’s head spin. While most recognize that these are critical human resource tasks, they also know that their time is at a premium. While their efforts are best spent on the nuts and bolts of improving their businesses, if small-business employers can address the most critical human recourse topics, they will be ahead of the competition in securing and keeping the best talent. Certain human resource areas must be managed properly to help keep employees productive and happy, and to help a small business thrice. These eight critical areas include the following: 1.
Payroll is a complex process that must be carried out accurately, on time, and in compliance with state and federal wage and hour laws.
2.
Employee communication helps a workforce focus on business objectives and mission.
3.
Benefits can make a small company look bigger, and more attractive to potential employees.
Joe Trebino, Delta Pure Water, Etc.
4.
Worksite safety and loss prevention reduce risk and help avoid accidents and fines.
Pat Trombino, First Bank
5.
Compliance helps keep a business in line with employment statutes and regulations.
Kimberley Victor, Mary Kay Cosmetics
6.
Interviewing and hiring, when done effectively, may help to maximize the potential for employee success.
Olga Vidriales, Travis Credit Union
7.
Lorraine Whitehouse, Synergy Homecare
Employee motivation and development may be critical for employee learning and advancement.
8.
Employee separation, whether voluntary or involuntary, requires certain HR tasks that are critical to business operations.
Kathi Regan, Maxx Worms Paul Roman, Window Innovations, Inc. Patti Schneider, The Right Choice Kurt Tomicich, KRT Services

Landmark Mortgage Group Landmark Mortgage celebrated the opening of its fourth branch with a Ribbon Cutting held on August 25th, 2011. Linda LoGrasso is the Branch Manager and is pictured at left cutting the red ribbon. Also in attendance were Mayor Bob Taylor and several Ambassadors of the Brentwood Chamber. Final Rule for Notification of Employee Rights The National Labor Relations Board has issued a Final Rule requiring most private-sector employers to notify employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act by posting a notice. Employers should begin posting the notice on November 14, 2011. Copies of the notice will be available on the NLRB website and from NLRB regional offices by October 1. Similar postings of workplace rights are required under other federal workplace laws. The 11-by-17-inch notice is similar in content and design to a notice of NLRA rights that must be posted by federal contractors under a Department of Labor rule. The notice of rights will be provided at no charge by NLRB regional offices or can be downloaded from the Board website and printed in color or black-and-white. Translated versions will be available, and must be posted at workplaces where at least 20% of employees are not proficient in English. Employers must also post the notice on an intranet or an internet site if personnel rules and policies are customarily posted there. The poster is available for download at www.nlrb.gov.
