[ FEATURED ARTIST ] JENNIFER FRAUTSCHI Two-time GRAMMY nominee and Avery Fisher career grant recipient Jennifer Frautschi has garnered worldwide acclaim as a musically adventurous violinist with a wide-ranging repertoire. As the Chicago Tribune noted, “violinist Jennifer Frautschi is molding a career with smart interpretations of both warhorses and rarities.” Equally at home in the classic and contemporary repertoire, her recent seasons have featured innumerable performances and recordings of works ranging from Brahms and Schumann to Berg and Schoenberg. She has also had the privilege of premiering several new works composed for her by prominent composers of today. Ms. Frautschi has appeared as soloist with Pierre Boulez and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Christoph Eschenbach and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival, and at Wigmore Hall and Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival. Highlights of recent seasons include Barber Concerto with the orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo Opera House in Naples, James Conlon conducting; and performances with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Boston and Buffalo Philharmonics, the Eugene, Jacksonville, Milwaukee, New Jersey, Tucson, and Utah Symphonies, as well as return engagements with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Alabama, Arkansas, Belo Horizonte (Brazil), Chattanooga, Portland, and Phoenix Symphonies. Selected by Carnegie Hall for its Distinctive Debuts series, she made her New York recital debut in Weill Hall; and as part of the European Concert Hall Organization’s Rising Stars series, debuted at ten of Europe’s most celebrated concert venues, including the Salzburg IV
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Mozarteum, Vienna Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, La Cité de la Musique in Paris, and Brussels’ Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. She has also been heard in recital at the Ravinia Festival, La Jolla Chamber Music Society, Washington’s Phillips Collection, Boston’s Gardner Museum, Beijing’s Imperial Garden, Monnaie Opera in Brussels, La Chaux des Fonds in Switzerland, and San Miguel de Allende Festival in Mexico. Her extensive discography includes several discs for Naxos: the Stravinsky Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, conducted by the legendary Robert Craft, and two GRAMMY-nominated recordings with the Fred Sherry Quartet, of Schoenberg’s Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra [nominated for ‘Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (with Orchestra)’ in 2006] and the Schoenberg Third String Quartet [nominated for ‘Best Chamber Music Performance’ in 2011]. Her most recent releases are with pianist John Blacklow on Albany Records: the first devoted to the three sonatas of Robert Schumann, including the rarely performed posthumous sonata (released in 2014); the second, American Duos, an exploration of recent additions to the violin and piano repertoire by contemporary American composers Barbara White, Steven Mackey, Elena Ruehr, Dan Coleman, and Stephen Hartke (released in 2015). She also recorded three widelypraised CDs for Artek: an orchestral recording of the Prokofiev concerti with Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony; the violin music of Ravel and Stravinsky; and20th century works for solo violin. Other recent recordings include a disc of Romantic Horn Trios, with hornist Eric Ruske and pianist Stephen Prutsman, and the Stravinsky Duo Concertant with pianist Jeremy Denk. Born in Pasadena, California, Ms. Frautschi began the violin at age three. She was a student of Robert Lipsett at the Colburn School for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles. She also attended Harvard, the New England Conservatory of Music, and The Juilliard School, where she studied with Robert Mann. She currently teaches violin in the graduate program at Stony Brook University. She performs on a 1722 Antonio Stradivarius violin known as the “ex-Cadiz,” on generous loan to her from a private American foundation. For more informaiton, visit JENNIFERFRAUTSCHI.COM.

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)
Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. After battling emphysema, he died of heart failure at the age of 72, on October 14, 1990, in New York City. Today’s program is the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s l ov i n g t r i b u te a n d “ to t a l embrace” in celebration of the centennial of the birth of America’s most influential and revered musician. We hope that this evening’s program will provide you with a glimpse into the stunning genius of our national treasure, adored here at home and far abroad.

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Bernstein’s career trajectory was diverse and varied, encompassing composer, conductor, pianist, educator, philosopher, author, broadcaster, and humanitarian. Whatever paths he engaged in, creativity, excellence, and passion defined them all. To The New York Times, he declared: “I don’t want to spend my life, as Toscanini did, studying and restudying the same fifty pieces of music. It would bore me to death. I want to conduct. I want to play the piano. I want to write for Hollywood. I want to keep on trying to be, in the full sense
of that wonderful word, a musician. I also want to teach. I want to write books and poetry. And I think I can still do justice to them all.” It is small wonder, then, that he became known as an American “Renaissance Man” (Time). It can be argued that Bernstein’s insistence on a wide-open door creative life may have very well compromised his overall musical excellence. Following a performance in Boston of the musical On the Town, the young composer’s conducting mentor Serge Koussevitzsky, notwithstanding warm approval for the show, pulled his protégé aside and delivered some tough love. Bernstein revealed: “He was furious with me. He gave me a three-hour lecture the next day on the way I was going.” Although Bernstein never abandoned his all-encompassing approach to making music, he did admit that greater focus was in order to move his career forward. The message from the venerable conductor was clear: Bernstein’s potential of becoming a truly great conductor—indeed one for the ages—is immense and must not be squandered away by a compulsion to take on all opportunities, no matter how attractive. Many diversions were to follow, but when all is said and done Bernstein has come to be regarded as one of the great conducting geniuses of the twentieth century. (However, he did go on to write many more fine and moving compositions, as noted below.) As a conductor, Bernstein’s legacy is profound and vast, spanning nearly a half-century as a dynamic and even flamboyant figure on the podiums of the world’s pre-eminent orchestras. He was the first American to gain international prominence, having forged especially close relationships with the Israel Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic, both with whom he recorded extensively and conducted in numerous live performances. But it was his storied and successful tenure with the New York Philharmonic that leaves perhaps the greatest impression. In November of 1943, after filling in for the orchestra’s renowned guest conductor, Bruno Walter, who had fallen ill, Bernstein stepped in at the last minute and scored a triumphant debut. The applause was ecstatic and The New York Times published a front-page article about his performance. Eventually, he was appointed Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958, a position he maintained until 1969; thereafter, as permanent Laureate Conductor he appeared frequently with the orchestra. Over the years, he amassed a discography of over SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON
VII
500 recordings. Altogether, he was awarded 16 Grammys in various categories, and was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 1985. On the podium, in sharp contrast to the more buttoned-up, controlled, and staid conductors of the time, Bernstein cut a flamboyant and controversial figure. Above all, Bernstein was never boring. He would conduct with broad and flailing gestures, feet leaving the ground, head bobbing and weaving, and with exaggerated expressions on his face. He had a legendary gift for bringing people to classic music, almost through the sheer force of his extroverted personality. His educational enterprises were unprecedented, bringing in new listeners both young and old. He understood the power and reach of radio and television through the programs Omnibus for adults (airing in the 50s), and most famously the Young Peoples Concerts, which were televised on CBS from 1958-73. Originating from Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the programs were a great hit. He was an outstanding educator and took immense joy in communicating and sharing his profound love of classical music. Bernstein’s successes as a composer include the Broadway stage – West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town, and Candide – and extend to performance venues internationally, where his orchestral and choral music enjoys continued popularity. His most significant concert works include three symphonies – subtitled Jeremiah (1944), The Age of Anxiety (1949), and Kaddish (1963) – along with Serenade (1954), Mass (1971), Chichester Psalms (1965), Songfest (1977), Divertimento for Orchestra (1980), Missa Brevis (1988), Arias and Barcarolles (1988), and Concerto for Orchestra (1989). For the opera stage he wrote Trouble in Tahiti (1952) and its sequel, A Quiet Place (1953). He partnered with choreographer Jerome Robbins on three-major ballets – Fancy Free (1944), Facsimile (1946), and Dybbuk (1975). Despite many positive career experiences in New York City, Bernstein was very much aware of the town’s seedy underbelly. He knew that balanced against the City’s high spirits and sophistication were people whose lives were set amidst corruption, squalor, tragedy, and violence. This understanding of the kaleidoscope of New York is manifest in many of the composer’s subsequent works: the film score for Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront (1954), the musical Wonderful Town (1952), and his supreme masterpiece, West Side Story (1957).
VIII
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Overture to Candide: Conceived during the same period as West Side Story, Bernstein’s comic operetta Candide was initially unsuccessful but eventually gained steam and found enormous popularity. Lillian Hellman provided the original libretto, later to be supplanted by a version from Hugh Wheeler. Candide is inspired by the satiric masterpiece of the same name, penned by the 18th century French firebrand and wit, François-Marie Arouet, known by his nom de plume, Voltaire. After Candide’s original Broadway run, Bernstein’s rousing Overture to Candide was given its first successful concert performance on January 26, 1957, by the New York Philharmonic under the composer’s baton. It soon became popular and earned an enduring spot in the orchestral repertoire. Only 4 to 5 minutes in duration, this brilliantly scored overture encapsulates the vibrancy and wit of Voltaire’s comic novel, weaving together such famous tunes from the operetta as “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.”
Simple Song from Mass: The Mass was commissioned for the opening on September 8, 1971 of the new John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In 1963, as he was finishing the orchestration of his Third Symphony, Bernstein was devastated at the news of the assassination of President Kennedy. Always sympathetic to the President’s progressive ideals, the composer decided to dedicate the Kaddish to his memory. The generosity of that gesture greatly moved Jacqueline Kennedy, perhaps prompting the President’s SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

widow to choose Bernstein for the honor of the opening. In turn, Bernstein fortuitously chose young composer/librettist Stephen Schwartz to co-write the lyrics. Subtitled “A Theater Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers,” the Mass includes: Broadway rhythms and bongos, hymns and electric guitars, pop, rock, and dissonant modernist writing, Middle Eastern dances, blues, jazz, and classical traditions. According to biographer Humphrey Burton, the Mass was “the closest Bernstein ever came to achieving a synthesis between Broadway and the concerts.” He could have added, “and everything in between”! Mass opens not in a church as may be expected, but rather abstractly in limbo. After the commotion of a four-part Kyrie, the Celebrant appears accompanying himself on electric guitar and singing, “Simple Song.” Dressed modestly in street clothes, he stands for a simple faith, unencumbered by liturgical conventions or entrenched religious beliefs. Burton observes: “The role of the Celebrant will never be easy, either technically or spiritually. When he sings ‘Simple Song’ he must be not only St. Francis, and the Celebrant, but also an incarnation of Bernstein himself—the child inside the man who, like his image of Beethoven, ‘never grew up and to the end of his life remained a creature of grace and innocence and trust.’” This evening’s performance of Simple Song features a lovely setting for flute and strings by Robert Longfield.

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 1
Fancy Free Ballet Suite & On the Town Rhapsody for Violin & Orchestra: The creative partnership of Leonard Bernstein and choreographer Jerome Robbins bore numerous fruits, beginning with the ballet Fancy Free (1944), extending to On the Town (1944), and culminating in West Side Story (1957). And to think it all began on a napkin. Considering Bernstein as the composer for a new ballet (Fancy Free) he wished to choreograph, Robbins asked if he could hear a music sample. “Funny you should ask that,” Bernstein wryly recalled, “because this afternoon in the Russian Tea Room I got this tune in my head and I wrote it down on a napkin.” As he sang the melody, “Jerry went through the ceiling. He said, ‘That’s it, that’s what I had in mind!’ We went crazy. I began developing the theme right there in his presence…. Thus the ballet was born.” Bernstein condensed the story line as follows: “From the moment the action begins, with the sound of a jukebox wailing behind the curtain, the ballet is strictly wartime America, 1944. The curtain rises on a street corner with a lamppost, a side-street bar, and New York skyscrapers pricked out with a crazy pattern of lights, making a dizzying backdrop. Three sailors explode on the stage. They are on a twenty-four-hour shore leave in the city and on the prowl for girls. The tale of how they first meet one, then a second girl, and how they fight over them, lose them, and in the end take off after still a third, is the story of the ballet.” Fancy Free consciously intended to raise morale and spirits on the home front. At the same time, it was given as an exuberant ode and valentine to New York City, the city the creators so dearly loved. Bernstein and Robbins wanted something distinctly American and contemporary that would address the reality of wartime while uplifting the spirits of the city. And they wanted the audience to laugh. Robbins observed, “The humor is incidental… I wanted to show that the boys in the Service are healthy, vital boys: there is nothing sordid or morbid about them.” Bernstein responded with a score that was a tonic for the times: vibrant, diverse, and loads of fun. He successfully blended elements from all over, including cartoon music, boogie-woogie and stride, the blues, and swing jazz. At other times, one can hear traces of the ballet music of Aaron Copland, Kurt Weill, and Sergei Prokofiev; in other words, there is something for nearly everyone. Audiences loved it and so did the critics. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Fancy Free was first performed on April 18th, 1944 at the Ballet Theater, Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It was an unqualified success, breaking all box office records, which led to numerous additional performances and a nationwide tour. “Fun? I’ll say! I’m still not over it,” he wrote to Copland. A mere eight months later that same year, Bernstein and Robbins realized they were on a roll and produced yet another smash hit. This time it would be the musical, On the Town, inspired by the scenario of Fancy Free but by no means would it be an imitation. Oliver Smith, who had been so taken with Fancy Free that he suggested Bernstein and Robbins expand it, set the show in motion and offered to produce along with his friend Paul Feigay. At Bernstein’s insistence, his friends Betty Comden and Adolph Green were brought on board to write the lyrics. It was agreed that the spirit would be lighthearted, but the creative team approached the show with considerable seriousness. Lyricists Betty Comden (whose own husband was away at the war) and Adolph Green proved critical in making sure that On the Town would take a deeper direction than its predecessor. Following a try-out run in Boston, the musical opened as an instant hit on Broadway in December 1944 and ran for 463 performances. (It was eventually made into a film starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra, sadly missing much of Bernstein’s music.) Inspired by and mirroring his colleagues—Robbins, Smith, Comden and Green—Bernstein wrote an entirely new score. He brought together disparate elements in an mélange of jazz-infused dance, boogie-woogie and stride, the blues, poignant ballads, and dynamic ensembles. Looking back on Fancy Free and On the Town, Bernstein wrote that it was only natural “that dance should play a leading role in the show On the Town since the idea of writing it arose from the success of the ballet Fancy Free. I believe this is the first Broadway show ever to have as many as seven or eight dance episodes in the space of two acts; and as a result, the essence of the whole production is contained in these dances…. That these are, in their way, symphonic pieces rarely occurs to the audience actually attending the show, so well integrated are all the elements.” However, the ballet and the musical are distinct ventures; not only are the story lines different, so too is the music. Bernstein himself did emphasize, “In another important sense, On the Town was not an expansion of Fancy Free; there was not a note of Fancy Free music in On the Town.” On the Town premiered on Broadway at the Adelphia Theater on XII

December 28, 1944. It was wildly successful with audiences and critics alike, prompting Jack O’Brien of the Associated Press to gush that it is rare when a “reviewer gets to heave his hat into the stratosphere, send up rockets and in general start the journalistic drooling over a musical comedy that puts an end to all adequate usage of superlatives.” Lewis Nichols of the New York Times called it “the freshest, gayest, liveliest musicals I have ever seen.” In 2016, Charlie Harmon - an esteemed music editor, archivist, and former Personal Assistant to Leonard Bernstein - created the On the Town Rhapsody for Solo Violin and Orchestra. This engaging work captures the spirit of Bernstein’s score, presenting the show’s best-known songs in charming and virtuosic settings for solo violin with orchestral accompaniment. It receives its World Premiere performance this evening, featuring acclaimed violinist Jennifer Frautschi as soloist.
West Side Story Concert Suite No. 1: West Side Story made its way to Broadway on September 26, 1957, running for some 973 performances. It made a tremendous splash and was nominated for six Tony Awards including Best Musical. The subsequent 1961 musical film adaptation was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won ten, including George Chakiris for Supporting Actor, Rita Moreno for Supporting Actress, and Best Picture. West Side Story is Bernstein’s magnum opus. It proved above all that the musical could extend beyond mere entertainment into the realm of profound emotional intensity and social commentary. with brilliant young lyricist Stephen Sondheim, Bernstein fashioned a romantic yet realistic big-city, modern-times adaptation of the enduring Romeo and Juliet story. Bernstein was hardly the first composer to be inspired by the Shakespeare tragedy. The tale of the star-crossed lovers was also tackled by Berlioz in his “dramatic symphony” Romeo and Juliet in 1839. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture (1869) still woos audiences, and Prokofiev’s ballet (1936) continues to attract admirers. The list goes on and on but nothing compares to the powerful multi-leveled impact of Bernstein’s exceptional musical. Never before and not since has a musical been stretched so much and taken so far. Following the New York premiere on September 26, 1957, Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times declared it “a profoundly moving show… as ugly as the city jungles and also pathetic, tender and forgiving…. Everything contributes to the total impression of wildness, ecstasy and anguish. This is one of those occasions when theater people, engrossed in an original project, are all in top form…. The subject is not beautiful, but what West Side Story draws out of it is beautiful.” The West Side Story Concert Suite No. 1, for two vocal soloists and orchestra, features for songs from this groundbreaking score: Maria – One Hand, One Heart – Somewhere – and the Balcony Scene (Tonight).
