[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 65th Anniversary Season! As the area’s only fully professional orchestra, the BSO’s talented musicians enjoy the support of an extended family, including our outstanding Board of Directors, hundreds of dedicated volunteers in our South Guild and Treble Makers, our hard-working Administrative Staff – and most importantly – our loyal Patrons, Subscribers, and Audience Members. Together, we bring the best in Live Professional Symphonic Music to our entire community! Our 2018-19 Subscription Series features great music from many eras and genres, including favorite masterworks by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff and many more. In addition to the BSO’s 65th Anniversary, other milestone anniversaries in our community are celebrated this season. In November, we partner with students from the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra to celebrate their 35th Anniversary Season with a special Side-By-Side performance. The 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission is commemorated by the premiere of a newly commissioned work by James Beckel: From the Earth to the Moon and Beyond, narrated by Shuttle Astronaut and Community 8

BREVARD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Leader Winston Scott. And our Opening Night: A Bernstein Celebration honors the 100th Anniversary of the birth of America’s greatest musician, Leonard Bernstein. I am immensely proud of BSO’s outreach efforts, which serve thousands of residents from every part of Brevard County, and every walk of life. Our Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event serving thousands of audience members of all ages. And my favorite event of the season, our Fifth Grade Concerts, introduces the thrill of live symphonic music to every fifth grader in Brevard County. These and many more events each season are an integral part of the BSO’s enduring legacy. As we celebrate our orchestra’s special anniversary, I am thankful for the generous and enthusiastic support from you, our loyal audience. YOU have kept the music playing for more than six decades, and we dedicate every performance to you. Here’s to a great anniversary season, and another 65 years of inspired music-making! [ FROM THE ] BOARD CHAIR I am honored to have been elected to serve as the Chair of our BSO for the 2018-19 Season, and I will do my utmost to serve our BSO’s Board of Directors, Executive Director, staff and, most importantly, our Brevard County Community. The importance of the BSO cannot be understated, because the existence of our BSO and the music that is provided to our community under the leadership of our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, and our talented musicians, is what makes Brevard County a great place in which to live. We are so very fortunate to have our BSO provide us with a fantastic quality of music in our own backyard. Our Board of Directors are well aware of the need our community has for the level of quality music we seek to provide to you each year, while recognizing that our BSO serves a broad range of interests and appreciation. We continue to do our very best to provide you with musical experiences that make you smile, laugh, cheer and feel joyful. We are, of course, receptive to receiving and considering the suggestions we receive from you, our audience. We are so grateful to have as our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, who, with his forward thinking and musical vision, enables us to experience wonderful and enriching musical programs. Our Maestro’s success is also the result of our talented orchestra members who put their respective talents and enthusiasm for symphonic music together as an orchestra that serves to provide us with world-class musical entertainment. As you have experienced in prior seasons, the skill and passion of the musicians is evident at every performance. Please join me in thanking all of the individuals who expend their time, skills and energy to bring us BSO’s 2018-19 season. Bring your family, friends, work colleagues and neighbors to our BSO concerts; spread the joy. Charles Nash BSO Board Chair 2018-2019 SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT SEASON 15

[ FEATURED ARTIST ] RICH RIDENOUR Critics hail pianist Rich Ridenour as amazingly versatile, masterfully musical and wickedly funny. Mr. Ridenour established his career performing his own musical arrangements of classical masterworks and today’s popular piano favourites. With hundreds of engagements to his credit, Mr. Ridenour has recently performed with the orchestras of Indianapolis, Atlanta, Kansas City, Topeka, Harrisburg, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Charleston, West Virginia, Elgin, Owensboro, Mazatlan, Mexico and the Bravissimo Festival Orchestra of Guatemala City. Each season Mr. Ridenour serves as pops director for the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Ridenour has collaborated with renowned performers such as Martin Short, Carol Lawrence, Robert Guillaume, Smokey Robinson, Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo), Larry Gatlin, David Ogden Stiers, Jim Nabors, Richard Hayman and Jennifer Holiday. He is frequently heard with his son Brandon Ridenour who played trumpet for 8 years with Canadian Brass. Mr. Ridenour has created over 50 recordings. Most notable are a two disc set he developed with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra called Piano Pop that feature arrangements of Billy Joel, Elton John, Vince Guaraldi, Richard Addinsell plus George Gershwin’s two Rhapsodies. Mr. Ridenour has collaborated on CDs with Patrick Sheridan (tuba), vocalists Linn Maxwell Keller, Diane Penning, Kathy Wagner, violinists Barry Ross and Steve Brook, the Richmond Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, West Shore Symphony, Sheboygan Symphony and a two set disc called Trumpet Invasion and Encores with Brandon Ridenour. A lifelong passion has been music education. As Education Director for the International Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mr. Ridenour conceived and developed Camp Gilmore at Sherman VI

SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 4

Lake YMCA, Keys Fest and educational piano labs in the public schools and juvenile center (working with day treatment and lock up youth). Mr. Ridenour taught in all these programs that today are a part of the Festival’s year long programs offered to young musicians to explore and grow in music. Mr. Ridenour also created two student shows for the Gilmore Festival: Invention Mania and the Piano Student of Mrs. McCalfrey. Mr. Ridenour also founded the non-profit organization Grand Rapids Musicians League serving over 400 young musicians in after school programs. Affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs, GRML provides student scholarships to music camps and musical programs to enrich young musicians in the greater Grand Rapids area. As a component of GRML the Keller Cooler Music Series was launched at the Meijer Botanical Gardens. This series inspired Fred and Lena Meijer to build an amphitheatre which led to the Fifth Third Bank Summer Music Series. Many of Mr. Ridenour’s students have succeeded in musical careers while others have instilled a lifelong pleasure in music. Working with Education for the Arts in Kalamazoo, Mr. Ridenour developed Music for Life giving high school musicians an after school opportunity to explore disciplines in all styles of music. This included work in music theory, history, composition, performance, computer music arranging programs and video capture/editing. Mr. Ridenour has also instructed piano at Aquinas College, Grand Valley State University, Calvin College and Western Michigan University. In 2011 Mr. Ridenour co-introduced City Keys to the city of Jacksonville, Florida. Six upright pianos painted by area professional artists brought energy to the downtown sidewalks for everyone to play and explore. In 2014, Mr. Ridenour worked as an advisor with the Sarasota Arts Alliance where currently 11 painted pianos grace the community for people to explore. Since 2013, Sarasota has been home for Rich and his wife Stacy, who serves as development director for the Sarasota Opera. Rich and Stacy have two children. Brandon is a professional trumpet player and Ross is a Chief Captain for Air Wisconsin serving United Airlines. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mr. Ridenour received a Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree from the Juilliard School of Music. Mr. Ridenour is an international Steinway Artist. For more information, visit RICHRIDENOUR.COM SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON
