on speed.” (Audiophile Audition) Her next solo album, “The Tempest”, will be released in 2019 and will feature music inspired by the writings of William Shakespeare. An avid chamber musician, Gogova performs regularly in iAN&ANi Duo with Russian cellist Ian Maksin. Their performances have been featured on NPR’s Worldview, Bulgarian National Radio, WFMT Chicago, TED Talks, and have been selected as Critics’ Pick by Time Out Chicago Magazine and the Chicago Tribune. Their multimedia concert “Tango Obsession” was sold out for 5 consecutive nights at the Chopin Theatre in Chicago. In 2012 iAN&ANi Duo released their debut album “Tango plus” featuring music by Piazzolla, Ravel, Ginastera, De Falla, Shchedrin, and a world premiere of a work by Chicago-based composer Ilya Levinson commissioned by the duo. The duo is frequently invited to perform at the Chicago Cultural Center, Mostly Music in Chicago, Unity Temple Concert series in Oak Park, Northeastern Illinois University’s Jewel Box Series, Live on WFMT from PianoForte Studios, Southwest Michigan Symphony Music Series, Atlantic Classical Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series and others. Equally at home as a performer and producer, Ani Gogova is the Executive Director of Anima Productions. In this capacity, she has been in charge of numerous productions, most notably the world premiere recording of music for baritone and string quartet by Ricky Ian Gordon presented at Lincoln Center in New York last season, as well as productions at the most prestigious concert halls in New York and Chicago including Carnegie Hall, Harris Theatre, and Old Town School for Folk Music featuring artists such as GRAMMY award winning soprano Barbara Frittoli, Metropolitan star Elizabeth Norberg Schultz, and world-music phenomenon Theodosii Spasov, to name a few. In addition, Gogova has co-produced several music films directed by Russian director Sergei Kvitko, most notably “Moments” featuring her on the piano in collaboration with Lucas Segovia of the Joffrey Ballet and “Strings Detached” featuring iAN&ANi duo and ballerina Abigail Simon. Gogova came to the US to complete her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on a full scholarship and has made her home in Chicago since 2003 when she was appointed at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, becoming the youngest professor to join the world-renowned faculty of the Music Conservatory at the time. Her dedication to education and collaboration with young musicians has led to numerous master classes, adjudication at national and international piano competitions, and teaching young pianist from all over the world at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. Sought after master class teacher, Gogova was the featured artist in residence Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in Valdeblore, France in the summer of 2018. For more information, visit ANIGOGOVA.COM

[ NOTES ] Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Hungarian Dance No. 1 Although the German composer Johannes Brahms wrote music imbued with intense passion, expressivity, and the fer vor associated with late nineteenth century Romanticism, he often felt like a man who lived in an era before his own time. Not only did Brahms have a penchant for the forms and styles of the Classical and Baroque traditions, he actually felt rooted in them. When you think “Brahms, what often comes to mind is music that goes so far as to epitomize the Romantic spirit. But never does Brahms drift afar from the discipline and structure of a Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven.

However, whether for nostalgic reasons or an innate fondness for folk music traditions, Brahms did turn to the Hungarian Roma styles for amusement and inspiration. Born in the port city of Hamburg, he was well acquainted with the authentic folk melodies and czardas of the Roma people who lived in the region before the Austrian government quashed their uprising in 1848, forcing many
to relocate, although thousands remained behind. As early as his late teens, Brahms befriended the Hungarian violinist Eduard Hoffmann, touring with him throughout Europe as his accompanist and learning the Roma style of playing and absorbing and transcribing the irregular rhythms and minor-key melodies presented by Romani violinists. In 1852, Brahms began his own arrangements of this material; setting in the ensuing decades 21 dances for piano-four hands, eventually published in four volumes in 1869 and 1880. These sets of dances proved immensely popular and revealed another side to the more formal and serious (and innovative) side of the composer who gave us such magnificent chamber music, the Violin and Piano Concertos, the Four Symphonies, and the German Requiem. Ever self-deprecating, Brahms described the Hungarian Dances to his publisher Fritz Simrock as “perhaps the most practical [pieces] so impractical a man as I can supply.” Over time, the wide appeal of the Dances led to orchestral versions, whether penned by the composer himself (as with Nos. 1, 3, and 10, in 1873), his friend Dvorak, or others. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso Andantino semplice Allegro con fuoco In 1874, Tchaikovsky was in his mid-30’s, barely eking out a living by teaching harmony at the Moscow Conservatory and writing music criticism for a local journal. These activities provided a modest income and were rewarding up to a point, but the composer saw them as burdens that took precious time away from his creative musical work. He felt it was time to break free from the Conservatory and become a composer full-time. Building on his successes with Romeo and Juliet and the Symphony No. 2, at the end of the year Tchaikovsky decided to write a piano concerto. He hoped the new work would bring him the artistic and financial success needed to SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

move forward as an independent composer. By this time Tchaikovsky was highly trained and confident, but recognizing his limited technique as a pianist, he sought the advice and guidance of Nikolai Rubinstein. The encounter was a colossal mistake. In a letter to Madame von Meck, Tchaikovsky described the experience vividly: “On Christmas Eve, 1874… Nikolai asked me… to play the Concerto in a classroom of the Conservatory. We agreed to it… I played through the first movement. Not a criticism, not a word. Rubinstein said nothing… I did not need any judgment on the artistic form of my work; there was question only about its mechanical details. This silence of Rubinstein said much. It said to me at once: ‘Dear friend, how can I talk about details when I dislike your composition as a whole?’ But I kept my temper and played the Concerto through. Again, silence. “Well? I said, and stood up. There burst forth from Rubinstein’s mouth a mighty torrent of words. He spoke quietly at first; then he waxed hot, and at last he resembled Zeus hurling thunderbolts. It appeared that my Concerto was utterly worthless, absolutely unplayable; passages were so commonplace and awkward that they could not VIII
SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT 3
be improved; the piece as a whole was bad, trivial, and vulgar. I had stolen this from that one and that from this one; so only two or three pages were good for anything, while the others should be wiped out or radically rewritten. I cannot produce for you the main thing: the tone in which he said all this. An impartial bystander would necessarily have believed that I was a stupid, ignorant, conceited notescratcher, who was so impudent as to show his scribble to a celebrated man.” A proud and highly sensitive man, Tchaikovsky was offended and enraged, storming out of the classroom. “I could not have said a thing. Presently, Rubinstein joined me and, seeing how upset I was, asked me into one of the other rooms. There he repeated that my concerto was impossible, pointed out many places where it would have to be completely revised, and said that if within a limited time I reworked the concerto according to his demands, then he would do me the honor of playing this thing of mine at his concert. “’I shall not alter a single note,’ I replied. ‘I shall publish the work exactly as it stands!’ And this I did.” With this courageous and momentous decision, Tchaikovsky proved that he had the confidence to strike out on his own as a composer. In the autograph of the Piano Concerto No. 1, Tchaikovsky indignantly scratched Rubinstein’s name from the title page, just as Beethoven did to Napoleon in the manuscript of the Eroica, and inscribed instead the name of the pianist and conductor, Hans von Bulow. Von Bulow went on to be the soloist in the Concerto’s world premiere performance in Boston, Massachusetts (curiously enough not in Russia) on October 25, 1875. The reaction from both the critics and audience was tumultuous and wildly enthusiastic. It has gone on to become one of the cornerstones of the repertory, serving as the standard against which all virtuosos must prove themselves. It is a heroic test for the soloist’s reserves of endurance and technique, as well as charisma and personality. Hans von Bulow offered this fitting statement of praise: “The ideas are original, so powerful; the details are so interesting, and though there are many of them they do not impair the clarity and unity of the work. The form is so mature, so ripe and distinguished in style; intention and labor are everywhere concealed. I would weary you if I were to enumerate all the characteristics of your work, characteristics which compel me to congratulate equally the composer and those who are destined to enjoy it.” SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) On the Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz The Strauss family dominated the Viennese social scene from about 1830 to 1900. It consisted of composer-performers who became famous for popularizing the Viennese waltz and for creating many of its most impressive examples. The family consisted of Johann Strauss, Sr., known as “The Father of the Waltz”; the Elder’s most successful and talented son, Johann Strauss, Jr., known as “The Waltz King”; and several other less gifted sons including Eduard Strauss and Josef Strauss. Johann Strauss, Jr., born in Vienna, October 25, 1825, was both enterprising and prolific; over time, he would achieve the greatest fame and success. Johann Strauss Jr.’s legacy lies in his achievement of elevating the classical Viennese waltz to the point where it became as much a feature of the concert hall as the dance floor. As the critic Eugene Eiserle observed: “What makes Strauss’s compositions attractive is the careful, inspired and bold development and charming instrumentation… He is a master of musical effect, and knows how to exploit it with nobility and fine taste. In a word, he has become the reformer of dance music.” (Ironic, considering that Strauss maintained that he was unable to dance himself!) In 1865, Johann Erbeck, choirmaster of the Vienna Men’s Choral Society, commissioned Strauss to write a choral work. However, the composer’s schedule was so crowded that the project never got underway. However, the following year proved unkind for their country as Prussia defeated it in the Seven Week’s War. Anxious over a post-war depressed economy, and suffering from bruised morale, Erbeck encouraged Strauss to contribute a patriotic waltz song to raise Viennese spirits. He responded with the penultimate waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube, inspired by a recurrent line from a poem by Karl Isidore Beck. However, the lyrics were penned by an inferior poet, who managed to disparage the city and results of the lost war. Later, Franz von Gernerth wrote more respectable and positive lyrics: X

Danube so blue, so bright and blue, through vale and field you flow so calm, our Vienna greets you, your silver stream through all the lands you merry the heart with your beautiful shores. However, On the Beautiful Blue Danube only took off when Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the 1867 World Exposition in Paris. It was a resounding triumph and brought the composer international fame and prestige. In addition to its status as the most famous waltz ever written—actually not one waltz but a series of five intricately linked waltz themes—the work has come to function as Austria’s second national anthem. In wintertime, it is seemingly omnipresent in Vienna’s boutiques, restaurants, and lodgings. Without fail, it brings to a close every New Year’s Day concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic. In short, it’s inescapable and why not? It’s the perfect waltz and the envy of any composer. When Strauss’s stepdaughter asked the great composer Johannes Brahms to sign her autograph-fan, he wrote down the first bars, adding “Alas, not by Johannes Brahms.” Austin Wintory (1984- ) N a s ce n ce a n d A p o t h e o s i s from Journey “Gaming’s Eclectic Outspoken Maestro” ~Game Informer Magazine

Austin went on to study at NYU and USC with composers Morten Lauridsen, Charles Fussell, and Erica Muhl. Never satisfied with working in a single medium, Austin has worked in the concert world, film music, video games, and miscellaneous others. Passionate about education, Austin is a regular public speaker at schools and events around the world, in addition to pre-concert talks and workshops. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Education Through Music – Los Angeles, as well as the Board of Directors for the Society of Composers and Lyricists. In March 2012, the PlayStation3 game Journey was released, after three years of work. The game instantly became Sony’s fastestselling PlayStation title, and the soundtrack album debuted on the Billboard charts higher than any original score in gaming history. In December 2012, more history was made when it was announced that Journey had become the first-ever Grammynominated videogame score. Wintory describes video games as having evolved into “a full-blown art genre that is right alongside literature and any other form of storytelling.” [Bio via austinwintory.com]
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Capriccio Espagnol Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the most influential composers in the Russian nationalist movement of the end of the 19th century. He was a central member of the group of composers known variously as the “Mighty Handful” and the “Russian Five,” which also included Alexander Borodin, Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and leader of the pack, Mily Balakirev After a military career that included over a decade of active service in the Russian navy as inspector of navy bands, Rimsky-Korsakov became – despite limited formal music education – a professor of composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, a position he held until death. He became expert in counterpoint, harmony, and musical form, and learned to play many instruments in order to improve his understanding of orchestration and conducting. Over XII

the course of his career, Rimsky-Korsakov achieved a well-deserved reputation as one of his generation’s finest orchestrators, with writing that is brilliant, colorful, and evocative. His book Principles of Orchestration remains a classic of the subject and his name has become synonymous with exotic and rich orchestration. Notwithstanding ascribed membership in the “Russian Five,” RimskyKorsakov was not afraid to look elsewhere for musical inspiration. For example, he succumbed to the exotic allure of the Orient and the tale of The Thousand and One-Nights (The Arabian Nights) when he conceived his orchestral masterpiece Scheherazade. Similarly, the scents, smells, and sounds of Iberia captivated him when he came across a book of songs by the Spanish composer José Inzenga. Originally intended as source material for “a virtuoso violin fantasy on Spanish themes,” in the summer of 1887 Rimsky-Korsakov favored a broader palette and shifted his efforts to “an orchestral piece with virtuoso instrumentation. [The Capriccio Espagnol] was to glitter with dazzling colors . . .” In the fall of 1887, Rimsky-Korsakov’s aspirations and hopes for the Capriccio Espagnol were fully realized when he conducted the orchestra of the Imperial Russian Opera House of St. Petersburg in the premiere. Enjoying a particularly close relationship with its 67 members, the composer drew from the orchestra a wildly successful performance. In rehearsal, the musicians became enamored of the score from the outset. “At the first rehearsal, [Rimsky-Korsakov fondly recalls], the first movement had hardly been finished when the whole orchestra began to applaud. Similar applause followed all the other parts wherever the pauses permitted. I asked the orchestra for the privilege of dedicating the composition to them. General delight was the answer. The Capriccio went without difficulties and sounded brilliant.” As much fun as this piece is for us to listen to, it is perhaps even more fun for the musicians to perform. No doubt, this accounts for the smiles we’ll being seeing both in the audience and with the musicians of our Brevard Symphony Orchestra! No less than the great Tchaikovsky was similarly impressed when he reacted to reading the score: “Capriccio Espagnol is a colossal masterpiece of orchestration and you may regard yourself as the greatest master of the present day.” This letter was followed the day after the premiere with a silver laurel wreath. Nevertheless, Rimsky-Korsakov was careful to distinguish between SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

notions of the Capriccio’s garb and its essence. He wrote in his autobiography, My Musical Life: “The opinion formed by both critics and the public, that the Capriccio is a ‘magnificently orchestrated piece,’ is wrong. The Capriccio is a brilliant composition for orchestra. The change of timbre, the felicitous choice of melodic design and figuration patterns, exactly suiting each kind of instrument, brief virtuoso cadenzas for solo instruments, the rhythm of the percussion instruments, etc., constitute here the very essence of the composition and not its garb or orchestration. The Spanish themes, of dance character, furnished me with rich material for putting in use multiform orchestral effects. All in all, the Capriccio is undoubtedly a purely external piece, but vividly brilliant for all that.” As the composer alludes to above, he saw every member of the orchestra as integral to the Capriccio’s success. It is in that spirit that the form of the work largely employs the venerable Baroque tradition of concertante playing, i.e., it features the virtuosity of the musicians in successive instrumental and small group solos. It is cast in five brief sections, which are arranged into two larger divisions. The first such division consists of a dazzling Alborada for full orchestra (an aubade or morning serenade); a set of five Variations on a theme stated by the horns, the first handled by the strings, the second by the French and English horns, and the last two by full orchestra; and a reappearance of the Alborada with a new tonality and with a different orchestration highlighting the good-natured virtuoso escapades of the solo violin. The second major division follows a snare drum roll and brief brass fanfare, which announce the Capriccio’s penultimate movement— the Scene and Gypsy Song. This section is a sequence of five cadenzas for various solo instruments or small groups, including virtuosic passages featuring violin, flute, clarinet, and harp. The movement is capped by the emergence of the impetuous Gypsy Song in the strings. Abruptly, the piece catapults to a close with the fifth and final movement, the fiery and sensual Fandango of the Asturias. This energetic dance comes from the Asturias region of northern Spain. Rimsky-Korsakov clothes it in swirling orchestral colors and marks its rhythms throughout the percussion section, involving emphatic cymbals, tinkling triangles, and snapping castanets. Themes from the preceding sections are recalled—including the Alborada—as the movement rolls along to a high-spirited and vibrant conclusion.

Another alternative is to return your tickets, seven (7) business days prior, to the BSO. If resold, your purchase price will be considered a tax-deductible contribution for which you will receive a receipt following the performance. Resale of tickets will be more likely the further in advance they are returned. Lost Tickets: If you misplace your tickets, call the BSO Office and a location pass for your seat will be issued and can be picked up at the King Center Box Office the night of the performance. Special Seating: The Brevard Symphony Orchestra encourages attendance by physically disabled patrons. For special seating information, please call the BSO Business Office. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit orchestra, the BSO depends greatly on the generosity of individuals like you to help us continue to fill Brevard County with beautiful music. From $1 to $100, every note counts. Donate today at BrevardSymphony.com.
