The past decade has brought an unprecedented period of growth in our enrollment
which has created new challenges in the area of student housing. As a result, the university has developed a long-range plan to increase the availability of on-campus housing and greatly enhance the on-campus experience. The first phase will include the renovation of Bankston Hall, to create suites with shared bathroom facilities and eliminate the old community showers and restrooms. Our long-range goal includes the construction of new residence halls behind the John F. Gibson University Center adjacent to the intramural fields. The new structures will offer suite-style accommodations but should maintain the community atmosphere of traditional residence halls.

Biofuels Impact
T
he study of microscopic algae may seem to have little practical application to those unfamiliar with the science, but a current project being conducted by two UAM scientists could have a farreaching impact on both the biofuels and nutritional supplements industry. Dr. Karen Fawley, associate professor of biology, and Dr. Marvin Fawley, associate professor and assistant dean for science and research in UAM’s School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, recently received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation totaling $152,273 to study Eustigmatophyceae, a little-known group of microalgae. According to Karen Fawley, the principal investigator on the project, these microalgae have “significant potential for the biofuels industry, which is a current national priority. Some species have high levels of omega fatty acids and could be used to produce these lipids as nutritional supplements.” A portion of the research grant will fund travel to the Czech Republic, where the Fawleys will meet with scientists at The Charles University in Prague, who

are conducting similar research and are collaborating with the Fawleys. According to Karen Fawley, current research has revealed that the Eustigmatophyceae are much more common and diverse than previously thought. “Our DNA sequence analyses for these strains have shown that the existing classification of these species is flawed,” said Fawley. The Fawleys, in collaboration with their colleagues in the Czech Republic, will characterize new strains of the microalgae with the goals of creating a description of new groupings and species, and revising the higher level classification of Eustigmatophyceae. “Understanding the taxonomy and the evolutionary development and diversification of these algae as well as providing new taxonomic groups and strains could positively impact both practical and commercial uses,” said Karen Fawley. The project will also have an impact on undergraduate research at UAM. The Fawleys have mentored 18 undergraduate students since 2006, including minority students who are part of the Arkansas-Lewis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, and will use students to assist with the microalgae project.
rkansas faces a critical shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers, but help is on the way. The University of Arkansas at Monticello recently graduated a record number of teacher education students, many who are choosing mathematics or science as their content area. UAM has also doubled the number of mathematics and science teachers currently enrolled in its master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) degree program who will graduate in 2013. The increases are a result of a collaborative effort between UAM’s School of Education, School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, the UAM STEM Center, and the Education Renewal Zone to encourage students majoring in mathematics or science to consider careers in teaching. Last August, Governor Mike Beebe and his Workforce Cabinet created a pilot program called STEM Works to improve education in high schools and universities in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “Improving education in these areas is vitally important to the future of our state,” said R. David Ray, former provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “It is essential that we work to increase the number of STEM teachers in this region.” “Arkansas and the nation as a whole need more highly qualified math and science educators,” added Dr. Peggy Doss, dean of the School of Education. “It has become increasingly more difficult for school districts to find and employ qualified teachers in these areas. That’s why these numbers are so encouraging. Increasing the number of 2013 M.A.T. math and science students from 6 to 12 is a beginning, but only a beginning. We still have much work to do.” UAM graduated 53 students with bachelor’s degrees in various licensure areas of teacher education, representing a 179 percent increase over last year’s 19 graduates. The School of Education has also made significant changes to ensure
the quality of its graduates. UAM has the only teacher preparation program in the state that requires a year-long internship in which education students complete an academic year in the public schools during their last two semesters. UAM recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with four school districts – Monticello, Drew Central, Rison, and McGehee (with more to come) – which will commit those districts to pay tuition for an M.A.T. student in a high-need licensure area in exchange for a commitment to teach in that district. The length of the teaching commitment varies from four to five years depending on the school district. “The steps we are taking are important ways to improve science and mathematics education in the region and state,” said Dr. Morris Bramlett, dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. “We are letting our students know that they have options following graduation, and one of those options is to teach. It’s vital that we increase the number of skilled science and math teachers.” Bramlett, with the support of Tracie Jones, director of the UAM Education Renewal Zone, recently organized a reception for all mathematics and science majors and invited Doss and her faculty as well as public school administrators to speak to his students about teaching careers. McGehee Superintendent Thomas Gathen was among the school administrators from southeast Arkansas to attend the event. “Thomas Gathen went above and beyond,” said Doss. “He came over and met with our math and science students and encouraged them to consider teaching as a career path. He helped blaze the trail.” Doss and her faculty are also looking for ways to alleviate the next teacher shortage in the areas of English and foreign languages. Doss and Mark Spencer, dean of UAM’s School of Arts and Humanities, are exploring ways to encourage students in the humanities to consider teaching careers. “We have developed a unique

Peggy Doss, dean of the UAM School of Education, has been named to a seven-member committee which will review and rewrite the state’s agreement with a national accrediting agency for teacher preparation programs. The committee is called the Arkansas Department of Education / Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation Partnership (CAEP) Committee and is chaired by Dr. Mike Lucas of ADE. Doss joins Lucas and the deans of education from UA-Little Rock, the University of Central Arkansas, Lyon College, Ouachita Baptist University, and Southern Arkansas University to revise the current state partnership with NCATE, which will soon become CAEP. CAEP is the result of a merger of the nation’s two principal accrediting agencies for teacher preparation programs – the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). “Every state has a partnership between the state and its accrediting agency,” explained Doss. “Arkansas’ partnership with NCATE was about to expire and now, with the two primary accrediting agencies merging, it’s time to review our previous agreement and create a new one that reflects the priorities of the new accrediting agency.” According to Doss, the state partnership program with NCATE was established to integrate state and national professional educator prepa-

In 2000, the state partnership program expanded to include a commitment by NCATE and its partner states to align state teacher education standards with NCATE’s national professional standards for professional teacher preparation. “Some states often defer to NCATE standards or use them in their own standard-setting process,” said Doss. “Many states rely on NCATE’s program review process.” Currently, 39 states have adopted or adapted NCATE standards as their own and apply them to all institutions for the purposes of state approval. The boards of NCATE and TEAC agreed in 2010 to create a new accrediting organization to consolidate the work of both agencies and create an agency to enable the education profession to speak with one voice concerning the preparation of teachers, administrators, and other P-12 professional educators. The transition to CAEP is expected to be completed by December 2012. Doss served as both a public school teacher and administrator before coming to UAM in 1993. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from UAM, a master’s degree in elementary education from UA-Fayetteville, a master’s in gifted and talented education from UALR, and an educational doctorate, also from UALR.

ampus bookstore operations at UAM will now be managed by the Follett Higher Education Group (FHEG). A selection committee consisting of administrators, faculty and students selected Follett to manage the bookstore operations based on the company’s technology, experience and resources, according to Billy Hogue, bookstore manager. According to a news release from Follett, the company’s Rent-A-Text program offers savings of, on average, 50 percent or more compared to purchasing new without sacrificing the ability to take notes and highlight within the normal wear and tear associated with course work. For tech-savvy students, Follett’s CafeScribe digital textbooks, which combine the benefits of digital access with the power of social networking, save students 40 to 60 percent and feature efficient tools for smarter studying.” All current UAM Bookstore employees have become Follett associates, accepting positions with the new bookstore operation and will be provided with training and development opportunities specifically designed to enhance each associate’s retail and customer service skills. “We are excited to have an oncampus resource that is focused on affordability and ready to cater to both
our school and student’s individual needs,” said Jay Hughes, vice chancellor for student affairs. “We look forward to working with Follett to offer an outstanding bookstore and promote a rewarding and pleasant customer experience for the entire UAM community.”

Since coming to UAM, Strong has served as a research mentor for her students while actively pursuing her own research. Strong and her students have presented research papers and posters at conferences and meetings ranging from The World Without Walls conference in Berlin, Germany to meetings of the Midwest Political Science Association in Chicago to the Arkansas Political Science Association conference and the Arkansas Student Congress. Two of Strong’s students, Nicholas Provencher of Monticello and Tiffany Reed-Tucker of Cabot, have presented research at conferences across the U.S. and in Europe.

azz Band I, UAM’s headline jazz ensemble, has been invited to play for audiences ranging from music educators across Arkansas to an international gathering of music professionals during the 2012 fall semester. Jazz Band I is one of four college jazz ensembles invited to perform at the 66th annual Midwest Clinic of the International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago December 19-22. The UAM ensemble will also be the featured jazz group for the annual convention of the Arkansas Music Educators Association in Hot Springs November 1-2. “This is a huge honor,” said Gary Meggs, head of UAM’s jazz program and director of Jazz Band I. “It’s a tremendous
honor to be the featured jazz ensemble at the state convention and then to be asked to perform for an international audience in Chicago is over the top. We’re very excited to have this opportunity.” The Midwest Clinic will feature performances by Leonard Slatkin, the Star Wind Orchestra, and jazz legend Wynton Marsalis. Jazz Band I will perform in the 1,000seat ballroom of Chicago’s McCormick Place West Convention Center on December 21 at 4 p.m. Other college jazz ensembles invited to the clinic are the University of Missouri-St. Louis Jazz Band, the Columbia College Jazz Ensemble, and the Conservatory at Sea Six O’Clock Jazz Band from Belgium.
UAM’s invitation came at the urging of jazz saxophonist Lou Marini, former director of the Saturday Night Live band who performed with Jazz Band I last spring. “After playing with us, Lou encouraged me to submit an application to the Midwest Clinic,” said Meggs. “I told Lou that we weren’t ready for that and he said ‘Yes, you are.’ So I submitted the application along with a CD of our performance with Lou and almost immediately got an email back with an invitation.” According to Meggs, Marini will perform with the UAM group in Chicago. “I think Lou kind of fell in love with our band when he was here last spring,” said Meggs. “We’re all excited about performing with him again.”
“Blue Lou” When UAM’s Jazz Band I takes the stage in Chicago in December, they’ll be joined by jazz legend Lou Marini, the former conductor of the Saturday Night Live band. Marini became an unabashed fan of Jazz Band I after performing with the group in Monticello last spring and will once again perform with the band at the International Band and Orchestra Conference.

he director of the state’s largest environmental policy and regulatory agency, a successful insurance executive, a Texas school superintendent, the Provost Marshal of the 39th Brigade Combat Team of the Arkansas National Guard, and a retired administrative law judge have been selected to receive the 2012 Alumni Awards for Achievement and Merit from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Teresa Marks, director of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality; M. L. Mann, retired general manager for The Hartford Insurance Group; Jody Clements, superintendent of the Kilgore, Texas School District; Lieutenant Colonel Tommie Brasfield of the Arkansas National Guard, and Judge Eugene Mazzanti, will be honored at Homecoming. Also honored will be Monticello businessman Dr. W. J. McKiever, who

will receive the Continuing the Connection Award, presented annually to the alumnus who best keeps alive the connection between UAM and Arkansas A&M, UAM’s name before joining the University of Arkansas System in 1971. The awards will be presented during the annual “Alumni Awards Dinner” for Arkansas A&M / UAM alumni on Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in the John F. Gibson University Center. Lt. Colonel Tommie Brasfield (Class of ‘95) Pine Bluff, Arkansas • Provost Marshal, 39th Combat Brigade Arkansas Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Tommie Brasfield is a 20-year veteran of the Arkansas National Guard. He was deployed to Bagdad, Iraq at the time of the capture of Saddam Hussein and served as chief of police during his capture. A 1995 UAM graduate with a degree in accounting, Brasfield served as a trainer for the Iraqi Police Force and has been deployed four times. He is currently the Provost Marshal of the National Guard’s 39th Brigade Combat Team. As Provost Marshal, Brasfield is a principal advisor to the Arkansas National Guard’s senior leadership in issues related to force protection, law enforcement, anti-terrorism, physical security, and domestic threats.
Jody Clements (Class of ‘87) Kilgore, Texas • Superintendent of Schools Kilgore Independent School District Jody Clements became superintendent of the Kilgore (Texas) Independent School District in 2007. A Kilgore native, Clements attended UAM on a track scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1987. He also holds an MBA in accounting from Louisiana Tech. Clements began his professional career on the faculty at Stephen F. Austin University. He joined the Kilgore School District in 1992 as a mathematics teacher and coach. He spent two years at Kilgore High School and one at Maude Laird Middle School before joining the Trinity School of Texas as assistant headmaster and athletic director. Clements returned to the Kilgore School District in 1997 as principal of Elder Alternative School, a post he held for four years. He spent six years as principal of Maude Laird Middle School, then moved to the central administration office as director of human resources before becoming superintendent.
M. L. Mann (Class of ‘56) Monticello, Arkansas • Hartford Insurance Retired El Dorado native M. L. Mann spent 37 years in the insurance business as a claims representative, field manager, regional manager, and finally general manager for the Hartford Insurance Group before retiring in 1992. A 1949 graduate of Pine Bluff High School, Mann was a prep football star who accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Arkansas before transferring to Arkansas A&M in 1950. He left A&M in 1951 to fight in Korea before returning in 1954. Mann was an All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference tackle for the Boll Weevil football team and helped the Weevils capture the 1955 conference championship. He earned a bachelor of science in education degree in physical education in 1956. He is a member of the UAM Alumni Association board of directors, The Centennial Circle, the Campaign for Athletics, and the UAM Sports Association. Fall 2012

Teresa (Brown) Marks (Class of ‘80) Little Rock, Arkansas • Lawyer and Director Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality Teresa Marks is a 1980 UAM graduate with a degree in history and social science and later earned a law degree from UALR. As director of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, Marks oversees an agency with the task of protecting, enhancing, and restoring Arkansas’ environment. Marks began her professional career as a high school teacher before attending law school. She is a former deputy prosecutor with the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and worked briefly in private practice before joining the law school faculty at UALR in 1990. In 1995, Marks joined the staff of the Attorney General’s Office, drafting legislation and working the areas of consumer protection and antitrust. She eventually became the Deputy Attorney General overseeing the Department of Public Protection before her appointment as director of ADEQ by Governor Mike Beebe in 2007.
Judge Gene Mazzanti (Class of ‘55) Little Rock, Arkansas • Attorney and Administrative Law Judge Boyd Law Firm Gene Mazzanti earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration from Arkansas A&M in 1955 and later earned a law degree from the Arkansas Law School which became the UALR School of Law. He went on the build a successful career as both an attorney and judge, receiving an appointment from Governor Winthrop Rockefeller to the State Claims Commission. He was appointed to an administrative law judge position by Governor Frank White, conducting hearings in a five-county area of northeast Arkansas. He retired from active practice in 1999. Lake Village native, Mazzanti was part of the beginning of an Arkansas A&M football dynasty in the 1950s. He lettered four years as a fullback and linebacker under head coaches Jim Benton and Convoy Leslie. Mazzanti was part of the Weevils’ 8-2 team in 1951 and the school’s first AIC championship team in 1953.
Continuing the Connection / Dr. W. J. McKiever Dr. W. J. McKiever, this year’s Continuing the Connection recipient, is a well-known Monticello pharmacist and businessman who attended what was then Arkansas A&M in 1955-56 before moving on to pharmacy school at the University of Tennessee-Memphis. He returned to Monticello shortly after receiving his pharmacy degree in 1959 and began a lengthy career as a pharmacist in his hometown. A Drew County native and graduate of Drew Central High School, McKiever owned City Drug for 21 years before selling the business and opening McKiever’s Drug in 1984. He sold the business in 2007 and is currently semi-retired, working one to three days a week as a pharmacist at Save Mart in McGehee. 10

Nothing But Winners O
ne of the winningest collegiate coaches in the state’s history, a pair of dominating pitchers
from different eras, and two heroes from a 1950’s football dynasty comprise the 2012 induction class for the University of Arkansas at Monticello Sports Hall of Fame. Alvy Early, whose 1,023 career wins as a women’s basketball and softball coach, rank him among the state’s most successful college coaches, leads a class that includes one of Early’s star pupils, softball pitcher Lindsey (Kight) Carmical, baseball pitcher Gene Franklin, fullback Charles Grassi, and the late Don Sawyer, a quarterback who led the Boll Weevils to a pair of Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championships. Monticello businessman George Harris will receive the UAM Spirit Award. The Class of 2012 will be formally inducted at a dinner October 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the John F. Gibson Uni-
versity Center as part of Homecoming Week festivities. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased by calling the Athletic Department at (870) 460-1058. The Hall of Fame selection committee waived the organization’s rule requiring coaches and athletes to be separated from the university for five years before they are eligible for induction to select Early. “Alvy Early is not just the winningest coach in UAM history, he is one of the most successful coaches in the history of intercollegiate athletics in Arkansas,” said Chris Ratcliff, director of athletics. “The committee felt it was only appropriate that we make an exception for an Fall 2012

Hall of Fame exceptional coach. We feel like this year’s Hall of Fame class is outstanding.” Before he became a coach, Early was a three-sport athlete at what was then Arkansas A&M, earning letters in football, baseball and tennis. Early was a successful high school coach at West Fork before returning to his alma mater in 1979 to become head women’s basketball coach. In 21 seasons, his teams won 425 games and lost 211. Early was four times AIC coach of the year, NAIA district coach of the year twice, produced 11 AllAmericans, won or shared four AIC titles, and led the Cotton Blossoms to the brink of an NAIA national championship, losing in the finals in 1990. Early became UAM’s softball coach in 1997 and immediately built a powerhouse. In 2000, the Blossoms won the first of five consecutive Gulf South Conference West Division championships. They won two more division titles before UAM joined the Great American Conference in 2011. Early promptly led the Blossoms to the first GAC regular season championship and the league’s first postseason tournament title as well. Early was the Gulf South Conference West Division Coach of the Decade (2000-10) and has produced eight All-Americans, 42 Academic All-Americans, and two players of the year, including Hall of Fame inductee Lindsey Kight. Kight was chosen to the GSC’s AllDecade Team (2000-10) as a pitcher after compiling a record of 89-26 from 2001-04 with a miniscule earned run average of 0.96, which is still a school record. Kight threw six career no-hitters, posted 49 shut-outs and recorded 985 strikeouts. 14

He’s Got Spirit! Anyone who’s ever sat near George Harris at a UAM football game will understand why he is the 2012 recipient of the UAM Spirit Award. Harris is a 1966 Arkansas A&M graduate and president of Commercial Bank of Monticello who is a long-time supporter of the Boll Weevils and Cotton Blossoms. The UAM Spirit Award is given to Harris in recognition of his support of the school’s athletics program and student-athletes.
Kight led the Blossoms to four straight GSC West Division championships and was a four-time All-GSC selection as well as three times AllSouth Region, GSC Freshman of the Year (2001), and twice the GSC West Player of the Year (2003-04). Gene Franklin pitched – and won – both ends of a doubleheader three times as the durable linchpin of an Arkansas A&M baseball team that won Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championships in 1963 and ’65. Franklin was a first team All-AIC selection in 1963, ’64, and ’65, and is one of two baseball players (and six athletes in UAM history) to earn first-team all-conference honors three times. Franklin once pitched an 11-inning, 1-0 shutout over UALR while recording 15 strikeouts. He pitched 13 innings and recorded 15 strikeouts against UCA and threw a no-hitter against Harding in 1964. That same year, Franklin led the AIC with 77 strikeouts, issued just 13 walks, posted an almost invisible earned run average
of 0.25, and complied a 6-2 record. Charles Grassi came out of Lake Village to play for both Jim Benton and Convoy Leslie as part of an Arkansas A&M football dynasty of the 1950s that saw the Boll Weevils win five AIC championships in six years. In an era of one-platoon football where players played both offense and defense, Grassi was a standout fullback and linebacker, earning second team All-AIC honors in 1953, the year the Weevils won the school’s first AIC football championship (and the first league title in any sport). Grassi earned first team All-AIC honors as a senior in 1954 in Leslie’s first season as head coach. The late Don Sawyer was the first team All-AIC quarterback in both 1957 and ’58 while leading the Boll Weevils to a pair of league titles and records of 9-2 (’57) and 7-2 (’58). In an era of run-first and pass only when necessary football, Sawyer’s 1958 statistics included 803 yards and 12 touchdowns passing and 999 yards total offense.

COACHING GOES HIGH TECH UAM receives approval for a new master’s degree program in physical education and coaching which can be completed online.
T
he Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools has granted formal approval of a new master’s degree program at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. UAM has received approval to offer the master’s degree in physical education and coaching, an online degree program designed for individuals who want to coach in college and public schools as well as those in an athletic-related field who want to increase their knowledge, earning potential and career options. “We are pleased by the Higher Learning Commission’s decision to approve this new graduate degree,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “The ability to offer more options in graduate education to the people of this region is vital to our mission of serving the needs of our constituents.” The degree requires completion of 30 hours of online course work covering topics such as strength and conditioning, risk management, laws that guide athletics and protect athletes, and current issues and trends in athletics. The program is designed to be completed in one year plus one semester with the final semester used for conducting a capstone research project. The program does not include or require a recommendation for state teacher licensure. Persons who enroll in the program must have a baccalaureate degree in education or an athletic or physical education-related discipline such as kinesiology, exercise science or recreational activities. “There is not another institution in this region that has a graduate degree for people in coaching or physical education,” said Dr. Peggy Doss, dean of the UAM School of Education. “There are similar degrees but none addressing both physical education and coaching or with this cur-
riculum model. There was really no option for another degree of this design in the UAM service region. If they didn’t have a teaching degree and license, they had no other graduate degree options.” R. David Ray, recently-retired provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, called the new program “an exciting addition to our academic offerings. This was a case of the university seeing and responding to a need. This new degree will open doors and increase employment opportunities.” Prior to implementing the new degree program, School of Education faculty surveyed coaches, teachers and physical education teachers in the region as well as current UAM physical education majors. Faculty members involved in the groundwork were Dr. Donna Hunnicut, Dr. Dwayne Massey, Dr. Kathy King, Barbara Johnson and Memorie Frazer. Seventy-five percent of survey respondents indicated a high interest in a master’s degree in physical education and coaching. “As an online program, there is the potential for students to enter the program from any location in the United States,” said Doss. “This is a tremendous opportunity, not just for our students and the coaches and teachers in this region, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity for the institution to raise its profile nationwide.” Chris Ratcliff, UAM’s director of athletics, said the program will “open doors for our coaching staff to employ graduate assistants who can take the program online and work with our coaches in all sports. T
hree-time All-American softball pitcher Kayla Jackson capped her spectacular playing career at the University of Arkansas at Monticello recently by being named Female Athlete of the Year by the Great American Conference. Jackson was presented the award at the first-ever GAC Night of Champions at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Little Rock. Arkansas Tech basketball player Johnie Davis was named the Male Athlete of the Year. Both awards were voted on by the league’s sports information directors or designees, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Jackson led the Cotton Blossoms to a 40-14 record, a 21-5 mark in league play, and the inaugural Great American Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2012. The Hallsville, Texas native accumulated a lengthy list of postseason honors, including selection to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America second team, making her the first softball player in UAM history to earn All-America honors three times. Jackson was the GAC Pitcher of the
Year, earned first team All-GAC honors as a pitcher and was second team AllGAC as a first baseman. She allowed just three runs during the 2012 GAC Softball Tournament, earning tournament MVP honors. Jackson was an All-South Central Region selection by both Daktronics and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. During the season, Jackson led UAM on a 16-game winning streak and was the primary reason the Cotton Blossoms did not lose a series throughout the year. Jackson’s season statistics included a 31-6 record, a 1.07 earned run average, 26 complete games, 10 shut-outs, and two no-hitters. Jackson led the league in wins, earned run average, opposing batting average (.168) and strikeouts (185). In addition to her pitching numbers, she was also among the league’s best offensive players. Jackson tied for the league’s home run title with 11, led the league with 42 runs batted in, ranked third in slugging percentage (.632), third in on-base percentage (.453), third in hits (61) and second in total bases (103). Jackson graduated in May and is now coaching volleyball at Hallsville (Texas) High School.
Peter Cruz Is New Volleyball Coach
P
eter Cruz is UAM’s new head volleyball coach. Cruz comes to UAM from American University in Washington, D.C. where he served one season as an assistant coach. He helped lead American to a 23-11 record, a 13-1 conference mark, the Patriot League regular season and postseason titles, and a spot in the NCAA Div. I tournament. Cruz spent two seasons as an assistant coach at West Alabama. He helped lead the Lady Tigers to the program’s first Gulf South Conference regular season championship. Cruz entered the collegiate ranks as a head coach at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He tallied a 31-18 two-year record and two runner-up finishes in the Carolinas Junior College Conference. Since 2000, Cruz has been the head coach of nine club programs in North Carolina, Alabama and D.C. In addition, Cruz was the head coach for the U.S. Marine Corps men’s volleyball team from 2008-10. He led the squad to the gold medal in 2008 with a 6-0 record and was selected to coach the All-Armed Forces team in the World Military Volleyball Championships in Germany. Away from volleyball, Cruz supervised 12 resident advisors as a community coordinator in the housing department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served two years in the Peace Corps, teaching English and life skills to teenagers in Rommani, Morocco from 2004-06. Cruz is a 2003 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.

ifty-two percent of the student-athletes at the University of Arkansas at Monticello posted a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the just-completed spring semester, according to Chris Ratcliff, director of athletics. According to Ratcliff, 103 of UAM’s 199 student-athletes posted GPA’s of 3.0 or better, including 14 with perfect GPA’s of 4.0. “The performance of our studentathletes reflects a nationwide trend at NCAA institutions where students involved in some form of athletics outperform the general student population and graduate at a higher rate as well,” said Ratcliff. “We are proud of all of our student-athletes for taking advantage of the opportunities athletics has provided.” The overall GPA for UAM student-athletes during the 2012 spring semester was 2.739. Female athletes in five team sports posted a 3.176 GPA led by the softball team’s 3.39. Fifteen of the 17 members of the softball team had a GPA of 3.0 or better, including two with GPA’s of 4.0. Male athletes in five team sports posted a 2.58 overall GPA, led by a 3.26 average by the cross country team. Matt Whiting has been named assistant athletic director for external operations. Whiting’s primary responsibilities include planning, organizing and implementing an annual fund-raising program for athletics. Whiting comes to UAM after spending one year as a graduate assistant at the UALR. In that role, MATT WHITING he coordinated the chancellor’s leadership corps summer orientation, coordinated freshmen week and parent/family day activities, assisted with the reconciliation of the department budget, and represented UALR at the Arkansas College Personnel Association annual meeting and the NASPA Student Affairs annual convention. Whiting is a 2010 UAM graduate with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He earned a master’s BRIAN RAMSEY degree in business administration from UALR. The Monticello native is a former member of the Boll Weevil baseball team. Brian Ramsey, former assistant commissioner for communications of the Great American Conference, has returned to UAM as assistant athletic director for media relations. Ramsey was UAM’s sports information director from 2007-11. A native of Harrison, Ramsey directed all media relations for the 10-member Great American Conference for all of the GAC’s 13 NCAA Division II sponsored sports. He also served as webmaster of the GAC internet site, coordinated GAC social media outlets, directed the league’s player of the week program for all sports, coordinated all-conference and special award programs, and supervised championship tournament planning and game operations. Prior to becoming UAM’s sports information director in 2007, Ramsey served as a sports information graduate assistant at Henderson State University, worked as a summer intern at KFSM 5 News in Fort Smith, and as a sports information student assistant at Arkansas Tech. Ramsey earned a bachelor of arts degree in print and broadcast journalism from Arkansas Tech in 2007.

AM’s oldest and most storied football rivalry will take on a new name this year as the Boll Weevils and Southern Arkansas will meet in the “Battle of the Timberlands” with the winner taking home a newly-created traveling trophy. The Weevils and Muleriders have met 87 times since their first game in 1913. “In all sports, UAM versus SAU is the oldest and fiercest rivalry on our schedule,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Every year during homecoming activities, alumni relive stories from the past that always involve games played against Southern Arkansas. Dr. David Rankin, president of SAU, and I decided that we needed to continue some type of classic rivalry involving our football teams. We look forward to housing this new trophy in Monticello.” “The games between UAM and SAU in all sports are always exciting,” said Chris Ratcliff, athletics director. “Even if the result has no bearing on the conference standings, there is always that sense of pride of beating your rival. The 2012 Battle of the Timberlands is scheduled for September 29 at 6 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.

The Centennial Circle As part of the university’s 100th birthday celebration. UAM is seeking pledges of $10,000 each to be used to create a $1 million unrestricted endowment for the UAM Foundation Fund. Earnings from this endowment will be used on an annual basis to meet priority needs of the university. These priorities will be determined by a joint committee of administration, faculty, and students. None of the endowment earnings will be used to augment salaries. Members of The Centennial Circle have their names, or the names of whomever they designate, inscribed on the Centennial Clock Tower. FOUNDATION Scholarship Honors the late James Hancock (Class of ‘39)
T
he family of the late James Hancock has created an endowed scholarship in the School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The James Hancock Nursing Endowed Scholarship honors the late James Hancock, a 1939 graduate of what was then Arkansas A&M College. An initial gift of $15,000 was presented to the UAM Foundation Fund by Mr. Hancock’s widow, Carolyn Grubbs Hancock of Conway. Additional gifts of $1,000 each were added to the endow-
ment by the Hancock’s daughters – Hilda Hancock Malpica and Becky Hancock Crossett. “We are most grateful for the generosity of the Hancock family for their gift to the university and our School of Nursing,” said Dr. Clay Brown, vice chancellor for advancement. “Endowed scholarships are unique in that they create a lasting legacy of educational opportunity for future generations. This gift will touch the lives of countless future students.”

Take Me Out To The Ball Game UAM Alumni and Friends Gather to watch the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Park Hot dogs, hamburgers, cold drinks and baseball! What better way to enjoy a warm summer evening for UAM alumni and friends who gathered in the Right Field Pavilion at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock in July to watch the Arkansas Travelers take on the Tulsa Drillers. The gathering, which is quickly becoming an annual event, included drawings for door prizes, such as UAM caps and memorabilia. If you’ve never made the trip to Dickey-Stephens Park for this event, make plans to join us next year. And you don’t have to be from central Arkansas to be part of the evening. UAM alums from Hamburg, Warren and McGehee were among the baseball watchers who made the trek.

Kermit C. Moss Kermit Charles Moss, who organized the Department of Business at Arkansas A&M in 1952 and served continuously on the school’s faculty from 1957 until his retirement in 1981, died July 27, 2012. A certified public accountant who ran for Governor in 1981, Mr. Moss was a native of Bearden and a graduate of New Edinburgh High School who joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served the in China-BurmaIndia Theater in World War II, receiving two bronze battle stars during his service. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Michigan in 1949 and a master’s degree, also in accounting, from the University of Arkansas in 1951. He was a former president of the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, a Paul Harris Fellow and District Governor of Rotary International, and maintained a successful private accounting practice in Monticello.
