From the Chancellor

The past year

has been a wonderful time of celebration as we looked back on 100 years of achievement and service to the people of the state and region. Now, as our centennial celebration draws to a close, we look forward with excitement and anticipation to the challenges and opportunities that await the institution as we begin our second century. I feel confident that, with your help, and the hard work and dedication of our outstanding faculty and staff, we will meet those challenges. One of our most immediate and pressing challenges is replacing the cooling system in the Science Center, which went down in the middle of a very hot summer. We were able to keep the building operational with window units in classrooms and laboratories, but offices were not so fortunate. I commend Dean Morris Bramlett and his faculty for making the best of a difficult situation. The good news is the cooling system as well as a new central heating system should be in place by October, thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new heating and cooling system is the first step in a long-range plan to upgrade and renovate the Science Center. We are also in the planning stages for renovations of the Babin Business Center and Music Building to make them more accessible for disabled students. I am also pleased to announce that construction of a much-anticipated annex to the School of Forest Resources should begin this fall. Look for details on this important new facility in this issue of UAM Magazine. Autumn means football, homecoming, and the UAM Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet. The Boll Weevils will make three appearances on television this year as part of the Gulf South Conference Game-of-the-Week package. Ask your local cable or satellite provider for details. A complete football schedule, homecoming schedule, and profiles of this year’s Hall of Fame induction class may be found in this issue. We are also preparing for the next legislative session and are excited that one of our own from the Southeast Legislative Delegation, Robert Moore of Arkansas City, will serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives. We also look forward to working with returning delegation members Senator Jimmy Jeffress and Representative Eddie Cheatham as well as the incoming members of the delegation. UAM has always been blessed with outstanding representation in the General Assembly. As always, your alumni association is looking for new ways to connect with you. We are on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. If you want to receive regular updates and newsletters, be sure to send us your current e-mail address. If you would like to host an alumni reception in your area, we will cover the primary cost and mail the invitations. As an alumnus of this institution, you represent not just our past, but our future as well. Stay involved with your alma mater, and remember, my door is always open. Sincerely, Jack Lassiter Chancellor

T

he names and faces are the same, but the job titles and responsibilities have changed. In a major administrative reorganization announced recently by UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter, Dr. Clay Brown, formerly vice chancellor for student affairs, has been named vice chancellor for advancement and university relations. Jay Hughes, formerly dean of students, will replace Brown as vice chancellor for student affairs. Scott Kuttenkuler, formerly director of advancement, will become dean of students and director of governmental relations. Director of Admissions Mary Whiting is now dean of enrollment management while Controller Debbie Gasaway and Business Manager Lathan Hairston have been named associate vice chancellors in the Office of Finance and Administration. Lassiter said the new titles and reorganization “reflect the institution’s efforts to recognize the talents of our

UAM MAGAZINE

administrative staff and to maximize those talents for the benefit of the institution. Each of these individuals has shown a willingness to take on new challenges and each has a long record of outstanding service to the university.” Lassiter said Brown will be asked to “expand our advancement efforts at a time when private fund-raising is critical to offset shortfalls in state funding. Dr. Brown has a broad background in higher education and understands the importance of cultivating relationships with alumni and friends of the institution.” Brown came to UAM in 2001 as assistant vice chancellor for student affairs. He was appointed vice chancellor for student affairs in 2005 and became vice chancellor for student affairs and university relations in 2009. Jay Hughes has a long connection with UAM, beginning as an AllAmerican football player for the Boll Weevils in the early 1980s. Much of

Hughes’ career was spent as a public school administrator before joining the UAM staff as partnership coordinator for the School of Education. After a return to public education, Hughes returned to UAM in 2009 as dean of students and director of residence life. “Jay’s experience as a public school principal and his background in higher education made him the logical choice to replace Dr. Brown as vice chancellor for student affairs,” said Lassiter. “As a former student of this institution, Jay has a unique insight into the challenges faced by our students as well as their needs to be successful, not only in the classroom, but as well-rounded individuals.” Mary Whiting’s new title of dean of enrollment management is a “reflection of her expanded role in not only admissions, but in recruitment and direction of our scholarship program,” said Lassiter. “Mrs. Whiting is one of those unsung heroes who works very hard behind the scenes to get UAM’s message out to potential students. Her efforts are a big reason for our phenomenal growth over the past five years.” Whiting joined the UAM staff in 2000 as an admissions representative before becoming director of admissions, scholarships, recruitment and international services. She also oversees the university’s program in special student services. Scott Kuttenkuler came to UAM in 2003 as an instructor of speech and eventually assumed leadership of the university’s award-winning debate and forensics program in 2004. He became director of advancement in 2009 before being named dean of students and director of government relations. “Scott’s first love has always been working with students and this gives him an opportunity to do that,” said Lassiter. “He was doing a wonderful job in advancement but missed his association with students. I expect great things from Scott as our dean of students.” Debbie Gasaway graduated from (Continued next page)

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Library hours are Sunday from 2 to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. During their journey to the Pacific coast and back, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their small group of voyagers crossed the traditional homelands of more than 50 Native American tribes. The exhibit examines the encounter of different cultures and examines the past and present effects of that encounter on the lives of the tribes which still live in the region. “What often gets lost in the story is that Lewis and Clark did not explore a wilderness—they traveled through an inhabited homeland,” says Fred-

If you’re not doing any of the above, you’re desperately behind the times. To make sure UAM isn’t behind the times, the university’s Advertising and Marketing Committee is exploring new ways to connect with students and potential students through social media. “Social media is how young people connect with each other,” says Mary Whiting, dean of enrollment management and committee chair. “If you have children, particularly teenage children, texting, tweeting, posting

National Praise

n the small town of Hamburg, Arkansas, Tonya Higginbotham is a student, a teacher, and a role model. It’s not her job to also mow the grass outside the elementary school, but she does it anyway. A single mother, she wants the best for her two sons, her school, the community she serves, and the school district that paid her way to college. As in many rural areas, Hamburg’s schools are the center of community life, and partnerships with the education system benefit the entire community. Hamburg has teamed with the University of Arkansas at Monticello to train engaged parents like Higginbotham to become early childhood teachers, creating a pipeline of talented, passionate and motivated teachers with a personal stake in the success of their schools. Working together, parents, schools and the university are preparing Hamburg’s children to be successful from the moment they enter elementary school. They are attempting to create better outcomes for students as they progress through secondary school and enter college and the career of their choice. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan toured Hamburg’s pre-kindergarten program recently and praised the partnership between UAM and the Hamburg schools. With approximately a million teachers expected to retire over the next five years, Secretary Duncan is touring rural schools to emphasize the need to explore more ways to recruit and develop the next generation of great teachers. Duncan says the economy, national security, and America’s standing in the world depend on it. According to a news release issued by the Department of Education, “small rural communities, like Hamburg, are showing how partnerships and an investment in their community can empower parents and career-changers, and set an example for students to follow. They are meeting their immediate need for quality

early-learning programs and planting the seed for students to follow into a career in teaching, where they will have the power to positively influence the lives of children.” Case in point: Ms. Higginbotham’s son Blake attended Hamburg’s preschool program as a boy and is now in his third year at the UAM School of Education. A former Americorps volunteer, he wants to return to his old grade school to teach. “I want to be here,” he says. “I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

The graduates included Jason Scheffer of Cabot, a December 2009 graduate with a bachelor of science degree in spatial information systems (SIS) with a surveying option; Will Posey of Nashville, a 2010 graduate with an SIS degree with a surveying option; and Daniel Kyle Pennington of Prescott, a 2010 graduate with an SIS degree with a surveying option. Current students who passed the exam are Justin Mallett of Arkadelphia, a senior forestry major who is also pursuing an associate of science degree in land surveying; Chris Bussell of Monticello, a senior SIS major with a surveying option who has also earned an associate degree in land surveying; and John Mark Henderson of Conway, a senior SIS major with a surveying option. “We are very pleased with the achievements of our students and graduates,” said Dr. Richard Kluender, dean of the UAM School of Forest Resources. “Their success on this exam, which is difficult to pass, is a direct reflection on the SIS and forest resources faculty as well as the academic rigor of the program.” The national pass rate for the exam is 62 percent. The exam is developed, administered and scored

MAKE A WISH The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) of the University of Arkansas at Monticello raised $1,500 during the 2009-10 academic year to present to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The committee, which consists of two members from each intercollegiate sport, held three main fund raising projects during the past year. The projects included “Kick For A Cause,” a field goal kicking contest during halftime of UAM’s home football games, a silent auction, and “Make A Shot, Grant A Wish,” a shooting contest held during halftime of UAM’s home basketball games. SAAC also hosted “Trunk-ofTreat Night” on Halloween, giving away candy to local children. by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Passing the exam results in certification as surveyor interns by the Arkansas State Board. Surveyor interns spend at least two years working under a licensed professional surveyor. UAM offers surveying as an option in the bachelor of science in spatial information systems program; as a two-year program in the associate of science in land surveying technology degree; and as a minor.

AWARD WINNER Julius Adewopo of Nigeria, a graduate student in the School of Forest Resources, placed fourth in the student poster competition at the International Conference of the Forest Products Society. American sprinter Roger Franklin, the late Boyd Miller, a basketball standout in the late 1940s, and the late Quentious Crews, an All-American end and later head football coach. The Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Green Room of the John F. Gibson University Center. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased by calling Jim Brewer at (870) 460-1274 or Reginald Glover at (870) 460-1028. A reception, which is open to anyone attending the banquet, will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the home of UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter and his wife, Judy.

Kevin McCarn McCarn came to UAM as an unrecruited walk-on from Mountain View in 1997 and promptly won the starting quarterback job as a freshman. Over the next four seasons, McCarn rewrote both the UAM and state collegiate passing records, passing for a then-state record 7,864 yards (a mark since broken by UCA’s Nathan Brown and David Knighton of Harding). McCarn, who currently coaches at Hamburg, still holds UAM records for yards passing in a career, career touchdown passes (61) and passing yards in a single game (499 yards vs. Arkansas Tech on October 23, 1999). He finished his UAM career with 563 completions in 1,056 attempts and his 96-yard touchdown pass to Corey Rider vs. Henderson State in 2000 is the longest pass play in UAM history. McCarn threw five touchdown passes in a single game twice.

Anthony Giovingo One of McCarn’s favorite targets was Anthony Giovingo, a third team All-American wide receiver and a 1998 finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, presented annually to the best player in NCAA Division II. Between 1995 and ’98, Giovingo set UAM records for career receptions (187), receptions in a season (81 in 1998), and career receiving yards (2,646). He caught 17 touchdown passes while earning first team All-Gulf South Conference and All-South Region honors in ’98.

Quentious Crews The late Quentious Crews laid the foundation for the renaissance of the UAM football program in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. Mr. Crews served as head football coach for three seasons (1975-77) and recruited most of the players who won the 1979 AIC football championship, UAM’s first conference football title in 12 years. Mr. Crews was an outstanding athlete at UAM (then Arkansas A&M) in the 1950s, earning first team All-AIC and honorable mention All-America honors from the NAIA in 1955. He set a single-game receiving record (since broken) of 12 receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns vs. Henderson State in 1955.

Fall 2010

Boyd Miller The late Boyd Miller was the school’s first basketball star of the postwar era, lettering four years at forward from 1949 to 1952. He was a three-time first team All-AIC selection in 1950, ’51 and ’52 and is one of just six players in school history to earn first team all-conference honors three times. Mr. Miller was a successful basketball and football coach at Stuttgart High School before leaving coaching.

Roger Franklin Roger Franklin was one of the top track and field athletes in UAM history, earning NAIA Division I All-America honors nine times while competing at distances of 200 and 400 meters outdoors and 400 and 600 yards indoors. Franklin was the NAIA Division I indoor national champion at 600 yards in 1989 and 1990 and the 400-yard national indoor champion in 1990. He earned outdoor All-America honors in the 200 and 400 in 1988 and ’89 and was an indoor All-American at 400 and 600 yards in 1989 and 1990. Franklin was a three-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference selection and the UAM record holder at 200 and 400 meters outdoors, 200 meters, 300 yards, 400 meters and 600 yards indoors. In 1990 he received the Leslie Beard Outstanding Athlete Award.

The 1956 AIC Champion Boll Weevils The accomplishments of the 1956 Arkansas A&M basketball team remain unique in the school’s athletic history. The ’56 Boll Weevils weren’t supposed to contend for a league title against heavily favored Arkansas Tech. Their coach, the late Troy Bledsoe, was a rookie fresh out of the high school ranks; their point guard wasn’t recruited; another guard was a reject from the football team; and they lost their first game by 43 points. Jack Jordan, who became one of the state’s top amateur golfers, was the unrecruited point guard. Levin Johnson, a highly successful basketball coach in later years, was the guard who went out for basketball only after suffering an injury in football practice. Together with Billy Joe Thurman, Jim Trimm, Eudell Ragland and the late Sid Ragland, they formed the nucleus of the only men’s basketball team in school history to win

a conference championship. The other team members included Luke Thornton, John Ellington, Bobby Evans, Virgil Grice, Don King, Eugene Jennings, and manager Leon Smith. The ’56 Weevils clinched the school’s first and only AIC basketball title on February 26, 1956 with a 7366 victory over an Arkansas Tech team that had ruled the conference for much of the previous decade. The induction of the ’56 Weevils marks the first time an entire team has been selected for the UAM Sports Hall of Fame. “We felt that, because of the unique nature of their accomplishments, the ’56 Weevils deserved to go in as a group rather than recognize one or two individuals from that team,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “They remain an important part of our athletic history and I am glad the Hall of Fame Committee chose to honor them in this way.”

W

hen Arkansas’ 88th General Assembly convenes in Little Rock next January, the interests of the University of Arkansas at Monticello will be ably represented by a veteran group of legislators. Robert Moore of Arkansas City, representing District 12, will begin his third term in the House of Representatives and his first as Speaker of the House. Moore will be joined in the House by Representative Eddie Cheatham of Crossett, representing District 9 and also beginning his third term in the legislature. In the Senate, Jimmy Jeffress of Crossett represents District 24 and begins his sixth term in the Senate after serving two terms in the House of Representatives. Together, Moore, Cheatham and Jeffress have 24 years experience in the General Assembly, experience that in an era of term limits, is an invaluable benefit to their constituents. “UAM has always been fortunate to have outstanding representation at the State Capitol,” said Chancellor Jack Lassiter, “and this session should be no different. Each member of the Southeast Legislative Delegation recognizes the role this university plays in southeast Arkansas and the impact it has on the region. We couldn’t ask for better representation.” Jeffress and his brother Gene, also a former state senator, both graduated from UAM in 1971. Jimmy Jeffress earned a master’s degree from Northeast Louisiana and taught music for many years in the Crossett school system before entering politics. Jeffress is currently fifth in seniority in the Senate and chairs the Senate Education Committee. He is a member of several important committees, including the Joint Budget Committee, and the Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development Committee. Robert Moore is a lawyer and farmer who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2007. He was elected by his fellow representatives to serve as Speaker of the House at the end of the most recent legislative session. Moore is a member of numerous committees in the House, including the Arkansas Legislative Council, the Joint Budget Committee, the Arkansas State Game and Fish Commission Oversight Committee,

the House Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development, the House Committee on Education, and the House Committee on Revenue and Taxation. State Representative Eddie Cheatham was first elected to the General Assembly in 2007 after serving on the Crossett City Council. Cheatham is a former administrator at Forest Echoes Vocational-Technical School and the UAM College of Technology-Crossett. Cheatham is a member of the Academic Facilities Oversight Committee, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Oversight Committee, the Educational Institutions Subcommittee of the Legislative Audit, the House Committee on Education, the House Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development, and the House K-12, Vocational-Technical Institutions Permanent Subcommittee on Education. Jeffress, Moore and Cheatham will be joined in the legislature by Efrem Elliott of Altheimer, who faces no opposition in the November general election and replaces retiring State Representative David Rainey of Dumas. “I had the good fortune to meet with Representative-elect Elliott recently and was impressed with his commitment to higher education, said Lassiter. “Along with our new representatives from Monticello and Warren to be determined in the November election, we look forward to strong representation in Little Rock.”

Coming Soon A project in the planning stages for the last several years will soon become a reality when UAM breaks ground October 15 on a new annex to the School of Forest Resources. The new building, which will be funded by a combination of state and private revenue, will be connected to the east side of the existing forestry complex, extending toward Jeter Hall, which will be razed to make room for additional parking. The $5.1 million project will add much-needed classroom, laboratory and office space to the School of Forest Resources. Plans also call for the expansion of the existing conference center. “This project is the result of a lot of hard work by our legislators, the foresight of Governor Beebe, and the generosity of Mrs. Maxine Clippert of Camden, whose late husband, George, was a long-time friend and benefactor of the forestry program,” said Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “We are excited by the possibilities this facility will create for our School of Forest Resources in teaching, research and extension.”

UAM NIGHT at dickey-stephens

Play Ball! UAM Alumni and Friends Gather For a Night at the Ballpark The weather was warm, the food was delicious, and laughter and conversation filled the rightfield pavilion at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock as UAM alumni and friends gathered for an evening of baseball and fellowship. UAM’s own Reginald Glover, his named emblazoned on the scoreboard, threw out the first pitch.

SPORTS Goodbye Gulf South Conference

T

he University of Arkansas at Monticello is leaving the Gulf South Conference.

UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter recently joined the chief executive officers of eight universities in Arkansas and Oklahoma to announce their intentions to apply to the National Collegiate Athletic Association for permission to create a new NCAA Division II conference. The members of the proposed new conference will be UAM, Arkansas Tech University, East Central University, Harding University, Henderson State University, Oua-

chita Baptist University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Southern Arkansas University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. “The intent of the conference is to group together similar institutions in terms of budgets and goals,” said the presidents, chancellors and directors of athletics from the nine institutions in a joint statement. “Furthermore, the conference is intended to be made up of universities that field an intercollegiate football program. Our

most important goals in this new endeavor are to limit time away from class and limit our travel costs.” The nine member institutions plan to submit a conference strategic plan, a conference constitution and conference by-laws to the NCAA by Dec. 1, 2010. If approved, the new conference affiliation will begin on July 1, 2011, and athletic competition in the new conference will commence at the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year. No decisions have been made regarding the name of the new conference or the location of the conference office.

New Look

U

AM is completing final preparations for the launch of a new athletic website. The new site was expected to be operational by September 1 with a new look, better graphics and easier navigation. Director of Athletics Chris Ratcliff and Sports Information Director Brian Ramsey have spearheaded the new website, which is being designed by Sidearm Sports. “We felt the athletics website needed a new look, something a little more sophisticated and less dated,” said Ratcliff. “We also wanted to add some features to the site to make the experience a better one for our fans and provide them with the information they want most.” Among the features of the new site are instant links to UAM’s athletic news on both Facebook and Twitter as well as a simplified design to make finding information easier. “One of our top priorities in the website redesign was creating a site that is easy to navigate,” said Ratcliff. “We don’t want our fans to wonder where to find information. We want it at their fingertips.” Ratcliff said the new website will also be beneficial to recruiting.

The same tickets are $25 for faculty, staff, and persons with athletic passes. Season tickets with guaranteed reserved seating for volleyball are $50 per ticket, $25 for faculty, staff and persons with athletic passes. Season tickets with guaranteed reserved seating for both men’s and women’s basketball are $100 per ticket, $40 for faculty, staff, or persons with athletic passes. All-sports season tickets with guaranteed reserved seating for football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, plus the Boomtown Classic football game vs. Southern Arkansas in El Dorado are $150 each. Cost of the all-sports ticket is $75 for faculty, staff, and persons with athletic passes. For information, call the athletics office at (870) 460-1058.

Ready To Go

P

oised and ready might be an apt description of the 2010 UAM football team. With 23 seniors on the preseason roster, the Boll Weevils could be a factor in the Gulf South Conference. After a 5-6 overall record in 2009 and 4-4 mark in GSC games, the league’s head coaches voted UAM to finish 8th in 2010 despite a leaguehigh five selections to the preseason all-conference squad. Beginning his sixth season at UAM, Head Coach Gwaine Mathews knows the Weevils hopes for a run at the league title rest in the hands of preseason All-GSC quarterback Scott Buisson. Defensively, the Weevils return all four starters on the defensive line while the linebackers are led by 2009 All-GSC honoree Carlton Johnson.

UAM TECHNOLOGY Cantrell Named Assistant Vice Chancellor

S

haron Cantrell has been appointed assistant vice chancellor at the UAM College of Technology at McGehee.

A Dumas native, Cantrell holds a master of education degree from UAM and has been part of the UAM-CTM staff for 18 years. As assistant vice chancellor, Cantrell will supervise instructional programs with a focus on quality assurance and consistency of courses and instructional programs, said Ware. Cantrell previously served as director of special projects, including workforce development, supervised the Carl Perkins Federal Grant Program, adult education, and the early care education projects. She also coordinated the first Arkansas Minority Contractor Training State Pilot Project, one of four in the state. Cantrell also co-coordinates the South Arkansas Adult Education Professional Development Institute at UAM and has been instrumental in writing state and federal grants to obtain additional funding for the McGehee campus.

Renovation

W

hen the Ashley County Adult Education program merged with UAM College of TechnologyCrossett in July 2006, the Hamburg Public School District agreed to lease an existing building at 311 North Mulberry to UAM. Three years later, the Hamburg School District donated the building that has been used for adult education and literacy since the mid-1980’s to UAM. Chancellor Jack Lassiter accepted the donation and now the UAM-CTC is undertaking the renovation of the building that houses one of its three Adult Education Program sites in Ashley County. According to Linda Rushing, UAM-CTC vice chancellor, the renovation project will cost approximately $375,000. The building will not only get a facelift and be more

energy efficient, but the interior of the building will be completely redesigned and will include a computer lab, classrooms, testing room, a student break area, and offices. “We are very excited about the renewed presence this will give UAM in the Hamburg community,” said Rushing. “It is our intention to use the renovated facility to expand our college course offerings in addition to the adult education courses that already exist.”

Earth Mover

W

hen UAM needed its baseball field excavated and leveled to solve a drainage problem, school officials didn’t have to look far for help, thanks to the newest acquisition of the Arkansas Heavy Equipment Operator Training Academy (AHEOTA). The Academy, which is part of the UAM College of Technology-McGehee, recently purchased a $310,465 tractor and scraper which was used to level and reconfigure Weevil Field. The tractor and scraper, along with a new bulldozer recently added to the inventory, got the job done.

Charlie Baker ‘69 Charlie Baker (BSE ‘69) has always loved the Boll Weevils and Cotton Blossoms. You’ll find him at most football and basketball games, which isn’t all that surprising. Baker has been closely associated with UAM athletics from his days as a trainer and equipment manager for Red Parker’s football teams in the 1960s. That love of the Boll Weevils and his long-time devotion to UAM athletics is why Baker will be honored with the Boll Weevil Spirit Award at this year’s Sports Hall of Fame banquet. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor than Charlie,” said Harold Steelman, an Arkansas A&M assistant on Parker’s staff. “We never had to worry about equipment with Charlie Baker in charge. He was a guy who worked very hard and was a dedicated as anyone to the success of the Boll Weevils.”
