>> Initial focus.

Lemonaid | Brian Groudan Â&#x; Cristina Mele Â&#x; Molly Samuels

>> initial assumptions.

• Parents don’t enjoy nagging their kids • Involving children in household chores will alleviate stress from parents • Children will want to help if it feels like a fun game • Parents need tips on how to run a large household

Research & Findings

>> directed storytelling.

• What activities are the kids involved in? • What tasks do the kids help out with at home? • Do you currently have a way to organize tasks or chores? • Are there any problems you find with your current system? Tell us about a time when your system went wrong. • Do you ever experience resistance from your kids when you ask them to do household chores? How do you deal with this?

>> bricks & mortar.

>> Contextual inquiry.

• Jen (mom) tells Jordan (son) that he’s watched enough TV today • Jordan explains that he actually didn’t watch that much TV • Once parents leave, he really wants to watch even though not allowed • Usually have to negotiate turning TV off (during commercials) • Both children wish there were more kids playing outside

>> observations.

• Toddlers love to be helpful so they don’t ever sulk when you ask them to do something • They love to clean things (give them a rag or broom) • Regular incentives not necessary (occasionally give them a quarter)

>> selected quotes from surveys/interviews.

I wish I had something that made it seem like the kid’s mom was watching him.

I want a house that would tell me the rules for the kids and find things for me.

I usually ask the parents how they discipline their child because I want the child to feel consistency.

Lemonaid | Brian Groudan Cristina Mele Molly Samuels

I would like to show the kids that the parents agree with what I say without having to call them.

I feel nervous that the kids will give me a bad report to their parents. It’s funny to think I care that much about what a six-year-old might say about me.

Scenario

>> scenario.

Tara is babysitting Tommy and his brother Jon for the first time. Their previous babysitter, Marci, went away to college and recommended that the family call Tara. Tara really wants the job to go well so that they’ll hire her again. After the parents leave, Tara makes the boys dinner. Oh, no! Tommy’s acting up and spitting his macaroni all over the kitchen. Now, Jon’s doing it too! Luckily, Tara has a lemonaid.

Lemonaid | Brian Groudan Cristina Mele Molly Samuels

>> video sketch outline.

Scene 1. The kids are throwing and spitting food in kitchen. Lemonaid “dings” to let Tara know this has happened before. The device recommends telling the boys if they don’t stop, she’ll take away dessert. Tara follows the instructions and it works. She votes this tip up for future babysitters.

Scene 2. Tommy is really bored and is complaining because he wants to watch TV. Tara recommends he do an arts and crafts project. Tommy really enjoys it, so Tara tags this moment for future babysitters.

Lemonaid | Brian Groudan Cristina Mele Molly Samuels

Scene 3. Gary and his wife are at a restaurant. He wonders what the kids are up to, so he checks his phone. He sees that Tommy is doing a crafts project and is really happy about this. Gary decides he will definitely hire Tara again to babysit.
