A NEW PERSPECTIVE.

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” – Norman Vincent Peale Peering out of my office window I can see that the whole world has gone twinkly. As twilight sets in, fairy lights abound, and there’s a glow to the air that fills it with hope and sends signals to all that there are special things to come. Of course the clichés of Christmas are all around us, and sometimes it’s tempting to turn into an anti-festive Grinch and hide beneath the duvet until the safety of January. But this issue we’re not doing that. In fact, we’re celebrating Christmas in all its vibrant glory (but still stylishly of course) and embracing every bauble, family gathering and flamboyant festive jumper with glee. To help us do that, we met with three foreign families currently based in Malta. Taking inspiration from around the world, they take us through their mélange of holiday traditions on page 87 – and that’s everything from Thanksgiving turkey to Swedish herring! We’re also delving into the celebrations of well-known faces, and meeting the mums of some of the island’s best-known personalities to discover what Christmas means to them, on page 69. Of course, we’ve also been hearing all about the Christmas plans of our beautiful cover interviewee, Kim Darmanin Demajo (page 15), and decorating with style on page 97. And, looking to the future, there’s travel on the cards, as we interview some of the world’s top travel experts for their insights into where’s best to book your vacation in 2014 (page 53). So, there are plenty of pages to be turned and lots of planning to be done! On behalf of all of us at Style, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy!

STYLE INTERVIEW

A

MODEL MUM

Sophisticated KIM DARMANIN DEMAJO spent years in the spotlight as one of Malta’s most successful models. Today, even though she may have hung up her catwalk heels to be the handson mum of twins Sophie and Sebastian, 3, she still finds time to run a restaurant along with her sister Lisa, and is as stylish as ever.

“MY TIME REVOLVES AROUND MY CHILDREN AND THEIR ALREADYBUZZING SCHEDULES!”

Here she tells JO CARUANA what she’s most looking forward to about the festive season, as well as about her transformation from‘model’ to ‘mum’!

PHOTOGRAPHY: BRIANGRECH MAKE-UP: SHANICE CHIRCOP USING IT STYLE MAKE-UP BY IT STYLE HAIR: GORDON AND PENNY AT TONI&GUY CLOTHING: MISS SELFRIDGE JEWELLERY: STERLING JEWELLERS

“My modelling journey started when I was 14, and I think it really shaped my personality and future in many ways. I was one of a group of girls who were among Malta’s first models, and we were given all the modelling jobs at the time. My first was at a hair show, back when models would be asked to walk among revellers at a party showcasing hairstyles or clothes. That led to me being asked to do photo shoots and fashion shows, and it quickly became an important part of my life, as there was something happening every weekend.

“Back then, though, it was never a career option locally. We used to enjoy it and the vibrant social scene that came with it, but it stopped there. Malta’s fashion scene was finding its feet at the time, and I think it’s come a long way since. “When I was 17 I decided to see if I could take my modelling adventure further, so my sister Lisa (who’s always been a huge support) and I went to London to put together my portfolio. One of my father’s cousins had a studio in the city where he would regularly shoot for Elle and Vogue magazine.

Kim wears rose gold with black diamonds horsebit necklace (€6,490), rose gold with black diamonds horsebit earrings (€3,750), rose gold with black diamonds horsebit ring (€9,500) and watch (€725) by Gucci.

STYLE INTERVIEW

“I MODELLED FOR SEVERAL YEARS, BUT GAVE IT UP TO START A FAMILY.”

It was an exciting few weeks building a ‘book’, taking shots, and then knocking on agency doors around London. It was a daunting process and, even though it didn’t work out, I got it off my chest and then came back to reality. After that I worked as a model for another eight years or so and then gave it up to start a family. “My partner Pierre and I really wanted to have children. It took us three years and three IVF attempts to finally get pregnant. It was a challenging time, made more poignant by the fact that my best friend, Debbie, had just had her first baby. As it turned out, I found out that she was expecting again just before getting the news that I

16

was pregnant too, while our third friend, Caroline, was also going into her second trimester! It was brilliant being pregnant together, and our children are already best of friends. “Finding out that I was going to be a mum of twins was absolutely incredible. Sophie and Sebastian have just turned three now; my time revolves around them and their already-buzzing schedules! Of course there are challenges to having two little ones, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, and I’m so lucky to have the very hands-on support of my mum Linda too. I am also thrilled to be a new aunt and godmother, to Lisa’s little boy Dave. He’s gorgeous and I’m completely in love with him. It’s a fabulous feeling watching our family flourish and knowing our children will grow up together. “To me, part of the fun of being a mum is dressing the children up, and I am totally addicted to shopping for them! When I travel I return with a suitcase full of little dresses and cute suits, and can’t wait to dress them up. I try to give them a bit of everything – a designer item if it’s a special occasion, and lots of highstreet things too. Sophie is already a little fashionista in the making and she tells me exactly what she wants to wear; she really reminds me of me at that age! “Seb, on the other hand, couldn’t really care less about clothes, but he’s a huge perfectionist in every other aspect of his life. He’s also so loving and affectionate, which is a lovely trait in a little boy. Seb loves football, as do I; it’s something I grew up with and some of my favourite memories are of accompanying Dad, Norman, who is the president of the Malta Football Association, on UEFA trips or watching him play. It’s been a huge part of our lives, and I think some people would be surprised by what a tomboy I can be when it comes to football! “As for my own style, well it hasn’t really changed much since I became a mum. I prefer classic outfits, and don’t tend to go for patterns or bright colours. Despite working as a model my fashion sense isn’t really that adventurous at all! I do like to keep up-to-date with the latest trends, but I prefer to adapt them to my style rather than adapting myself to suit them. “Now we’re eagerly looking forward to Christmas in our house. It’s definitely my favourite time of year, and having the children has made it all the more special. I am already filling up their stockings and collecting presents, and we’ve been watching festive films together since November! This is the first Christmas that the twins are really going to understand what’s going on, so it’s great fun. “Christmas has long been important to our family, and we’ve always celebrated it in a big way. I remember all the things that made the season special for me when I was growing up, and now I am doing my best to recreate that magic for Sophie and Seb. “Looking to the future, I am excited by what’s to come. Lisa and I are focusing on our restaurant Chez Philippe and developing it day by day. I also get so much joy from just watching the children grow up, seeing their personalities emerge and having fun as a family. There’s a lot to enjoy and be thankful for, particularly at this special time of year.”

Kim wears rose gold with MOP Mediterranean Eden necklace (€14,000), rose gold with MOP Mediterranean Eden charm bracelet (€14,500), rose gold with MOP Mediterranean Eden charm earrings (€4,900), rose gold with MOP Bvlgari ring (€2,400) and rose gold with diamonds steel Serpente watch (€13,700) by Bvlgari.

STYLE INTERVIEW

KIM’S John Galliano would have to be one of my favourite designers. He pretty much created the nude look, which is a hue I love and have a lot of in my wardrobe. I bought a few of his pieces back when he was artistic director at Dior; it’s a shame he got fired! New York is my favourite shopping destination. I’ve been a few times now and it always blows me away. I turn into a complete shopaholic! I do buy a few key pieces from designers but am also a huge fan of highstreet shopping. To me, nothing beats Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, although I recently discovered shopping in Soho and that’s a pretty unique experience too. I am very much an accessories girl – I couldn’t live without bags, shoes or belts; they’re my downfall! I don’t have lots of them but prefer to have exactly the amount I need, although I do add to the collection every so often. I’m also most likely to be found wearing ballerina pumps, as I find them far more comfortable than heels, especially for running after the children! When I think of my social life now, most of it revolves around my children, and I love taking the kids out on play dates. A good dinner is probably my idea of a great night out, although we did spend some time in Ibiza this year, so I enjoyed my fair share of clubbing! Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year, and I am very organised when it comes to planning it. I keep things simple – we have a large Christmas tree and we gradually collect presents underneath it. At this stage, my list is completely ready and I know exactly what I’m getting everyone. This season certainly brings out the planner in me! I’m very passionate about spending time with friends. I have three groups of friends and they have always been a fabulous support system over the years. As I’ve grown up I’ve realised how important that is, and I treasure it. o

“SOME OF MY FAVOURITE MEMORIES ARE OF ACCOMPANYING MY FATHER, NORMAN, TO INTERNATIONAL UEFA GAMES.” Kim wears Tahiti pearl necklace (€9,900), cultured pearl earrings with diamonds (€3,110), cultured pearl ring with diamonds (€2,300), cultured two-tone pearl ring with diamonds (€5,200) and Corum watch with diamonds (€11,500).

STYLE IN-DEPTH

Discovered at the age of 13, ELKA PACE went on to become Malta’s representative for the Supermodel of the World competition, but realised later that her true calling was to delve into the world of health and fitness. I was 13 when I auditioned and was chosen to model for Hot Couture by Marisa Grima. Some might say I was too young, but Malta’s modelling scene is obviously different to the international one, in that it’s not all sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Here you know people and they are more sensible about what to model at what age. One of the biggest highlights from my modelling years was winning Malta’s Supermodel of the World competition

and competing in Puerto Rico with Ford Modelling Agency. It was great working with them and I was rather overwhelmed by the whole experience. I’m in a different scene now, but I think modelling was more fun back in the day when the industry was just a small, tightknit group of friends. Unfortunately, it’s never been the best-paid job in Malta, so I only did it because I enjoyed it. I’m lucky enough to have found my passion in life as a pilates instructor, and that Bryn Kennard, who was my mentor, has taken me on as his partner at Body Works. The best thing about my job is that it’s not about making people look good but about making them feel better and giving my clients a better quality of life.

“AT 13, SOME MIGHT SAY I WAS TOO YOUNG, BUT MALTA’S MODELLING SCENE IS OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT TO THE INTERNATIONAL ONE.” ELKA 24

Working for the likes of Zuhair Murad is what saw JOY GATT rise to become one of Malta’s most commercially successful models. As well as being heavily active on the local fashion scene, she is now also a qualified aesthetician and recently opened her salon – Joy Aesthetic and Wellness Clinic. I was discovered at the age of 14 by Marisa Grima and, after winning the titles of Miss Maltese Beauty and Miss World Malta, I never really looked back. It was great fun, especially when I had to go overseas and meet models and agents there, and ultimately, that was how I ended up working abroad. At one point I spent some time travelling round the world to work as a model and some of my biggest career highlights were in Lebanon, including doing a whole catalogue for Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad – who normally uses two or three models – and working with Vivienne Westwood. As someone who’s still active on the Maltese modelling scene, I can vouch that,

“AFTER WINNING MISS MALTESE BEAUTY AND MISS WORLD MALTA, I NEVER LOOKED BACK.” JOY over the past couple of years, the modelling industry has got better, but unfortunately payment hasn’t. Many people still expect models to work for free without realising that taking care of your looks can be expensive. I’ve also studied anatomy and physiology for body therapy and am CIBTAC qualified. I now specialise in semi-permanent make-up and hair loss micropigmentation. It’s something I really enjoy and I am very much looking forward to the challenges ahead. When it comes to my careers – being an aesthetician and a model – I’d have to say they’re both very ‘me’!

With a career that spanned 15 years, XANDRU GRECH became one of Malta’s most recognisable faces and names, but it was health and fitness that would ultimately claim his undying devotion, and he recently opened his second Move Fitness Centre. I actually started out as an athlete, but then someone suggested I should model and I did. I was 13 at the time and my career, if you want to call it that, lasted until I was 28. Some of the key moments included working for Weekend Moda, Noelene Miggiani’s TV show Gallarija, and doing fashion shows for Next, but my proudest moment was the international advert I did for Sky TV to promote Malta. I think that, nowadays, things have become very serious, but back when I was in it, the

modelling industry was different. People had a lot of heart and time, but today it’s much more professional in terms of photographers and props – before it was done for fun: ‘let’s take a shot!’ and that was it. I used to find modelling very artistic, but I could never do a stiff fashion show. In fact, I remember once modelling when we had to go down a flight of steps; I missed one and went tumbling to the bottom! It was funny for everyone else but me, obviously. Nowadays, I own my own chain of fitness centres, with outlets in Sliema and Ta’ Xbiex. Running a business is a totally different thing to modelling, particularly because I live my job day and night. Then again, my career has allowed me to be financially independent and, as cliché as it may sound, has also given me the chance to make my dreams come true.

“MY PROUDEST MODELLING MOMENT WAS THE INTERNATIONAL ADVERT I DID FOR SKY TV TO PROMOTE MALTA.” XANDRU 27

STYLE IN-DEPTH

JUSTIN HABER is one of Malta’s bestknown footballers with a modelling portfolio to match. He is also the founder of the Justin Haber Academy, which trains young athletes in the art and etiquette of the world’s favourite sport. The funny thing is that it all started in a really coincidental way. I used to hang out at a local lido and one day I spotted stylist Carina Camilleri eyeing me from the other side of the pool. A few days later she asked me to model for her and I said yes because I didn’t want to be rude! My first modelling job was a bed commercial with one of my favourite models. But it was in a bed! Throughout the shoot I kept saying the silliest things, but I loved every second of it. From then on I worked for many major brands, including McDonalds, Vascas, Franks and Coca Cola, but I think my biggest break was doing the video for Ira Losco’s 7th Wonder. It hasn’t always been easy to balance football and modelling. In fact, I once got dropped from a team because my coach had told me to quit modelling, but I did a shoot all the same. Most of the time, though, it’s worked out. When I set up the Justin Haber Academy, I wanted to give kids something I didn’t have: good, professional coaching combined with the back-up of a health instructor, a psychologist and a football etiquette expert. I also play with the national team and have a shop called Just Water, which supplies around 60 per cent of the tropical fish on the island, so I’m always quite busy. One thing I’ve really come to believe, however, is that when it comes to life, it’s personality and being a decent person that really make a difference.

“WHEN I SET UP THE JUSTIN HABER ACADEMY, I WANTED TO GIVE KIDS SOMETHING I DIDN’T HAVE.” JUSTIN 28

STYLE IN-DEPTH

Having placed seventh in Mr World and made a name for himself as a corporate lawyer, both of MATTHEW SALIBA’s careers have proven to be as successful as the man himself. I am a very shy person by nature and being a model is something that just happened. It was a question of luck but, once I was in it, I worked hard at it. Modelling is not just about standing there and posing, you need to make sure you’re always prepared to take up a modelling job by taking care of yourself. I began modelling when I was 15 and had a full-time job, but then I started reading for a Doctorate of Laws at the University of Malta and, after a while, I decided to give modelling up and focus on my studies. I had been modelling for at least nine years by then but, now that my studies are over, I am getting back into the modelling scene, but only in a very limited way. I wouldn’t say that my looks affect my job as a lawyer or how I do it, but the confidence I got through modelling definitely has. When a person is confident – not only in their knowledge, but also their appearance – it gives them an advantage. I have had some great moments in both careers. As a model I placed seventh in Mr World and won two fashion awards, while as a lawyer I’ve been entrusted with dealing with some big transactions, so that’s been great as well. In fact, I love being a corporate lawyer because it’s a mix of law and business, which gives me a very holistic role in the company.

“I WOULDN’T SAY THAT MY LOOKS AFFECT MY JOB OR HOW I DO IT, BUT THE CONFIDENCE I GOT FROM MODELLING DEFINITELY HAS.” MATTHEW 30

STYLE IN-DEPTH

If I could pick one modelling job in the future it would be a campaign promoting education, while also focusing on social life and health. I feel that these things are rarely put together even though they affect each other so much, and it would be good to shed light on them and help people. o

THE STYLE REPORT The new season items we covet for a life of style… RAISE A GLASS

For a piece that will really stand out at your Christmas party, why not pick this skirt by Indian-American fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra? This unique, fracture organza jacquard skirt features a solid high waist, shattered glass effect embroidery throughout and a single vent at the back. Very striking! bibhu.com

KEY SIMPLICITY

Despite not having the chicest fashion reputation, the humble turtleneck is infinitely wearable. It keeps you warm and layers brilliantly – perfect! For the ideal mix, wear a basic cotton style under a heavy-fabric coat with plenty of character. Alternatively, inject personality from the get-go with this beautiful turtleneck, which features a contrast leather trim and an exaggerated, asymmetric hemline. donnakaran.com

DRIVING A WEDGE

Both chunky and stiletto heels are out this season – thankfully replaced by something far more practical: the wedge. Perfect for when you want to dress up without compromising on comfort, the resilient wedge is handy and stylish. Complete your look with a statement scarf and skinny jeans. emubronte.net

PINK LADY

Forget Rudolph and his red nose. This Christmas, the colour to be seen in is pink. Bright hues and pastel shades both work brilliantly, but the more patterns you can sport the better. In fact, we love this coat by French fashion designer Leonard. leonard-paris.com

TRAVELLING IN STYLE:

WHERE SHOULD YOU GO IN O? From magazine editors to leading travel agents, Malta recently welcomed 100 top travel industry experts for the News UK Travel Awards 2013. Here STYLE ON SUNDAY asks four of these international jet-setters for their thoughts on Malta, as well as their advice on the best hotels, restaurants and attractions in the world. INTERVIEWS BY IGGY FENECH AND JO CARUANA SHOT ON LOCATION AT THE CORINTHIA PALACE HOTEL & SPA, ATTARD PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIONEL GALEA

Ed Grenby is the editor of the UK’s Sunday Times Travel Magazine. He is also, consequently and independently, an avid globetrotter who has been to some truly remarkable places, including Mount Everest. “My job is usually to send others to various destinations, but truth be told, it’s great when they can’t and I have to go myself. I also love it when I get to meet readers and they tell me that they loved a place we had written about. “I think perceptions of Malta are just starting to shift in Britain. It’s always had a reputation as a beach island, but it’s slowly becoming somewhere where you can go for the architecture, the history and much, much more. As for its main competitors, I think they’re undergoing a change as well, but I would say anywhere in the Mediterranean. “I’m only on the island for a short time but I found myself lost in Mdina; and it was fantastic! The views from there are terrific, and the weather has been wonderful too… I really wish I were staying for longer! “I’m lucky to have travelled quite a bit and people often ask me what my favourite things are, but when it comes to restaurants, I’d have to say the burger joint at Le Parker Méridien in New York. It’s funny because you just go in and it looks like a normal hotel, but then there’s this ‘secret’ burger

restaurant hidden behind a curtain on the left of the lobby. It’s a proper, down-home, no-frills burger joint with loud music and graffiti, but when you’ve been flying for eight hours, there’s nothing like a burger! “My top picks for 2014 are probably Bhutan and Myanmar (Burma); so, places most people haven’t heard of basically, particularly because when I think of my readers I know they want the best and newest places. I also can’t fail to mention Brazil, as they’ll be hosting the World Cup. It’ll definitely be a fun destination as I remember when I was there last year and everyday was a carnival! “I feel a bit guilty saying this – but countries such as Greece and Turkey have become really good value, particularly since airlines and hoteliers are reducing their prices to bring in more people. So they are also destinations worth looking into.”

Ed’s Favourites Destination: Antarctica. There’s nowhere on the planet which is so unlike everywhere else: no people, no buildings, just ice, snow and penguins. It’s out of this world. City: New York is the ultimate city. It’s got food, culture, people, buildings, green spaces and attitude. Attraction: Tower Bridge in London. It’s the most touristy thing in the city but it’s so iconic that you can’t miss it. It’s also part of the city, and something that you can actually use.

Jane Knight is the Travel Editor of the UK’s Times newspaper. Her career has taken her across the globe and she is renowned for her in-depth articles on some of the world’s most fascinating destinations. “I’ve always loved to travel, so a career as a travel journalist made sense. After years in the business I can now choose the destinations I go to and it’s wonderful. I am definitely one of those people who adore their job! “I’ve really enjoyed my time in Malta. Until recently, I think the island suffered a little thanks to its reputation as a destination for retirees but that’s changing now. There’s lots going on – including the Renzo Piano project in Valletta – to draw younger crowds. I think of Malta as an ideal ‘city break’ destination with all sorts of things for people to look forward to. “When it comes to competitors, I think Malta has to stand up against places such as Andalucía and Granada, but I believe it can do that very well. For instance, I didn’t know I was coming to the country with the largest signed Caravaggio painting until I got here – it’s incredible! I do think Malta is now on the cusp of changing. Majorca certainly made the jump from a low-budget sun-sea destination to a hip location with loads to offer a high-end traveller; Malta could definitely go the same way. “I have been lucky to travel extensively, but if I could only go to one country ever again it would be France. I love the people, the food and the pretty villages. I have been there so many times

54

Jane’s Favourites but it never fails to surprise me! More exotically, I was also very charmed by Sri Lanka as it has everything I look for – beaches, culture, delicious delicacies, great shopping and fascinating sites. “As for my ‘hot destination of 2014’, I am going to pick Brazil. The World Cup will be held there next year, so it is on everyone’s radar, plus the Olympics are coming up. I would suggest Bahia, for its stunning beaches, and Rio as it really is an unbelievable city. Book your tickets as soon as possible!”

Hotel: Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons, in Oxfordshire. It’s run by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc and it’s absolutely perfect! The restaurant there has two Michelin stars, but I think it should have three. City: Paris. It’s magical, even if you’re not going there for romance. It has so much ambience and I love the joie de vivre that you can feel enveloping you. Attraction: Universal Studios in Florida. My son and I love to go there together. It has the right mix of scariness and imagination, and I guess you could call me a thrill-seeker!

Alison Couper is the Senior Director of Global Communications at Hotels. com, Expedia.com Ltd. With the world as her office, she is also a blogger for The Huffington Post. “There’s nothing better than travelling as a job, particularly because I get to go to anywhere from Columbia to India. I think travelling is fantastic and, in fact, holidays are one of the last things people give up, even when times are tough. “This is not my first time in Malta as I had come four years in a row as a child. We had stayed in Gozo and one of my fondest memories from those trips is eating prickly pears with a little spoon. “I have to admit that, as an adult, I’m really surprised by Malta; the food and wine are really good, everyone’s been really friendly and there’s loads to do; it definitely makes for a fantastic weekend break. “Ibiza and Morocco are probably Malta’s main competitors, especially for a short break. Nevertheless, although I think people have always seen Malta as a nice place, the numbers are on a par with Morocco’s now, and Malta has a lot of Scandinavians booking trips. “With so many countries to visit and things to see I try not to go to the same place more than once, but my favourite city has to be Rome. The weather, the food,

Alison’s Favourites the history, the art – it’s just a wonderful place. It’s also really busy but then quiet in some places – Valletta actually shares some of these traits and reminds me of it. “I think people have done the traditional Majorca, Ibiza and so on and, in 2014, they’ll be looking further afield. I think places like Malta and Turkey – anywhere you can get the sun – will be quite popular next year. A lot of people are also going to Cambodia, Vietnam, and even Burma (Myanmar) – the latter might become the new Thailand, in fact.”

Destination: New Zealand is beautiful and there’s so much to do. I jumped out of a plane and white-water rafted while I was there – it was incredible fun. Beach: Jervis Bay in Australia. Beautiful white sand, great for surfing and it’s not full of tourists. Attraction: The Taj Mahal in India was pretty spectacular. Maybe it’s a cliché because it is so special!

Marie Allen is the marketing manager for Elegant Resorts, a leading luxury travel company that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Marie’s many career highlights include finding herself in the Mojave Desert with none other than Richard Branson! “I love the variation that working in travel offers. When it comes to marketing you’re constantly juggling all sorts of activities and every day is different. When you have a new product to get out there it’s pretty

58

stressful as you need to work very quickly, but at the same time I do get to travel to some incredible destinations – after all, you can only market something once you really understand it! “Over the years I’ve attended some exciting events with some pretty high profile people, including celebrities on occasion. I’ve also found myself in some amazing money-can’tbuy situations, such as at the press launch of Virgin Galactic’s Space Ship 2, in the desert with Richard Branson! We were the first tour operator to sell Virgin’s trips into outer space, but you can only do that once you’ve had five days of training and become accredited space agents! Each seat on the Space Ship is priced at around $250,000, and we’ve sold 10 so far. “This is my first time in Malta and I’m loving it. The people are so friendly and the hotel team is incredibly welcoming. Malta feels very British in many ways, and it also reminds me of somewhere like Madeira. It suits a certain market. It’s got beautiful beaches, coves and bays, and it’s great

exploring the little fishing villages. I think it could have quite wide appeal if marketed correctly. “My favourite destination would have to be South Africa – you’ve got cities, beaches, safaris and wine; it’s got everything! As for my ‘hot pick’ for 2014, it would have to be Mauritius, which ties in well with a stay in South Africa too. o

Marie’s Favourites Exotic destination: In the Caribbean I love St Bart’s. It’s not your typical Caribbean island and it actually reminds me of the south of France. Expect excellent dining and beautiful boutique hotels. Restaurant: Le Caprice in London. It’s part of the same chain as the Ivy and the food blew me away. I only had fish and chips, but it was so simple and so special! Hotel: The Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru in the Maldives. It’s like having your own private villa with the benefits of a resort. There’s also great diving to look forward to.

MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS Christmas is a time for family, and each has its own traditions and special ways of making the most of the holidays together. Here, three Maltese personalities’ mums share their special Christmas stories from over the years.

Left to right: Joe, David and Tina Camenzuli.

INTERVIEWS BY SARAH MICALLEF

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIONEL GALEA

TINA CAMENZULI

Tina Camenzuli and her family, including her model son David, have spent Christmas in Sweden, Thailand and Australia over the years. Here she shares the special memories from their Christmases abroad. “David was a fantastic little boy, but very naughty... he was always up to something! When it comes to his modelling, I’m very pleased for him, but he likes to keep a low profile. He doesn’t like to make a big fuss about what he’s doing. “When the kids were young we spent many lovely Christmases in Sweden with my family. Swedish Christmas is completely different to Christmas in Malta. It would all start at 3pm on Christmas Eve when everybody watched Donald Duck on TV – it’s just something everybody did! Then, we’d have a big buffet of Swedish food, and later my brother or another family member or friend dressed up as Father Christmas would come out of the forest on skis, carrying a sack of presents which he gave to the children. “Besides Sweden, we would often go away for Christmas. We spent a few in Thailand which we really enjoyed – we were in this lovely hotel and the boys woke up and went swimming – it was completely different, but very nice. We also spent a few Christmases on the beach in Australia when we were living there. “We love Christmas, and we try to spend it together. But in recent years it’s been a bit difficult with David living in Dubai and his brother working on cruise liners, travelling around the world. This Christmas we are finally going to spend it together, after five years. We will travel to Bali to relax – Christmas is all about spending quality time together.”

“CHRISTMAS WOULD START AT 3PM ON CHRISTMAS EVE WHEN EVERYBODY WATCHED DONALD DUCK ON TV – IT’S JUST SOMETHING WE DID!”

Brenda Farrugia has four sons, the oldest of whom are Nathan and Toby (DJ Toby). She recalls how they mix Maltese and English traditions come Christmas.

BRENDA FARRUGIA

“We’ve always been fans of Christmas. The house would be bedecked with lights and decorations, and my mother and sister would visit from the UK. I would prepare Christmas pies and pudding while the boys helped decorate, climbing up ladders and hanging off the ceilings. The Christmas tree would be piled with presents, and they would get up at around five o’clock on Christmas morning to rush down to open them. Toby always liked musical things while Nathan loved books. Nathan used to study and read, while Toby was more into the arts. On Boxing Day, we’d have Maltese family and friends over, and play board games. “One year, I took Sam, my youngest, Christmas shopping. It was a small shop, with breakable things on the shelves. As soon as I let go of his hand to tell the shop assistant what I wanted, he ran over to the other side and picked up a near life-sized Baby Jesus. I shouted out and must have startled him, because he dropped it! I picked it up and the index finger dropped off, rolling away. Everyone in the shop looked for the missing finger, but we never found it. I had to buy the Baby Jesus, and he now comes out every year. Another time, Nathan and Toby knocked over the Christmas tree. The tree is about 7ft tall, and Toby was flat out, completely hidden, with the tree on top of him! “We always made a lot of Christmas, and still do. We miss close family that has passed away, but still have a house full of people, with friends joining in. I think the more people you are at Christmas, the more fun you have. It’s about bringing people together.”

Every year the girls and I make them while listening to the Gold Album by ABBA and the Phantom of the Opera – they have nothing to do with Christmas but that’s what we always put on! “When the girls were little we used to take them to the novena at the Sacro Cuore. The religious side of Christmas, which everybody seems to forget, is also important. “During her first year at school, Ira was the drummer boy in her nativity play. I think every little girl wants to be the Virgin Mary, so she wasn’t too happy about that! She did a good job with the drums because she was on time with the beat – she always had perfect timing when it came to music. One year, we got Ira a toy microphone and amplifier for Christmas. I remember it was yellow and blue – she really loved it. “Music was always Ira’s dream, and she has given up a lot to pursue it. I’m proud that she is doing what she wants to do. As a parent, when you see your children growing up and being good kids, you think to yourself that you didn’t do such a bad job – they turned out ok! “I lost my brother seven years ago, and the following Christmas was tough. Christmas is family time. Family shouldn’t just be at Christmas, but it’s a jolly good excuse to get the family together, and if there are differences within the family I think it’s a time to resolve them. Life is too short.” o

“DURING HER FIRST YEAR AT SCHOOL, IRA WAS THE DRUMMER BOY IN HER NATIVITY PLAY.”

THE

AUDI

A LUXURY CAN BE SMALL If you were to be blindfolded before entering the A1 and your blindfold removed on sitting at the wheel, you would struggle to determine which Audi model you were in. And perhaps this is the secret behind the huge success of the smallest Audi to be produced todate. There is no compromise whatsoever on luxury and refinement in the A1. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALAN CARVILLE

We’re used to accepting compromises when it comes to comparing small cars with their larger counterparts in terms of luxury and refinement. Audi’s brief must have been different – they wanted to produce a small car that is refined and luxurious to their own standards – and they did just that. There is huge competition in almost every car segment but one segment that was perhaps always overlooked was the small luxury segment. So take the compact executive segment and competition is massive. Take the budget small car segment and again there is heavy competition. But in terms of the ‘small luxury’ segment, this didn’t even exist before the birth of the A1. And Audi left no stone unturned to execute the mission – they did not compromise with

luxury or with plastics on the inside; they did not compromise on refinement or specs; they did not compromise their brand. The A1 comes in three doors or in five doors; the latter known as the A1 Sportback. For the test drive that took us to Buskett, we drove the A1 Sportback with the Admired Pack.

The equipment on all A1 standard models is indeed very generous and includes the automatic Start-Stop function for greater fuel and CO2 efficiency, 15” alloy wheels, audio system with CD/MP3 with three-inch monochrome display and four speakers, three spoke sports leather steering wheel (adjustable for height and reach), airconditioning, a sophisticated airbag system, light and rain sensors, and many other extras. The Admired Pack that we drove features a series of optional extras including the renowned S-Line Exterior Package, 17” alloy wheels, parking sensors, Xeonon lights and LED exterior lights, contrast colour roof arch, multifunction leather steering wheel, Bluetooth mobile interface and metallic paint.

GET THE LOOK!

SMOKEY SOPHISTICATION

STEP

Begin by applying a light shade of concealer to your under-eye area and over the top lid. Next, apply foundation all over your face, being careful to blend it in properly. We really like Guerlain’s Tenue de Perfection foundation, which gave flawless skin for hours – so it’s ideal for going from party to party this season!

This may not be a new look as such, but it was certainly the key make-up trend from New York Fashion Week this winter – and we’ve followed suit! Taking inspiration from the catwalks of Christian Siriano, Jason Wu and Thakoon, this style is all about unadulterated glamour with smouldering lids and luscious lashes.

STEP

Next, line both the top and bottom rims of your eyes with a pencil, paying close attention to go into the lash line itself. Add intensity with a strong shade of eye shadow. The must-have Guerlain Collector Eye Palette has a selection of both matte and iridescent colours that can be used wet or dry. The best colours for this look are charcoal and silver.

Make-up: Karin at Franks, using Guerlain Hair: Chris Galea, Michael & Guy Model: Veronika@models.com.mt Photography: Valentina Lupo

STEP

Complete your look with a slick of lipstick – we love Guerlain’s Rouge G Collector Colour in its striking black lacquer packaging. We’ve chosen their special edition colour number 863 in the ‘Provocative’ shade, which will beautifully complement the dramatic look of your eyes.

3

STEP

Finish off your eyes with a deep, black mascara that will stay put all night. We recommend Guerlain’s Cils D’Enfer, a new breed of mascara with an innovative texture and efficient brush. Its polymer film sets the formula on the lashes so you don’t need to worry about smudging or flaking, while its artemia salina extract helps to fortify the lashes with long-term use.

STYLE TIP:

5

STEP

Finally, give yourself added allure with Guerlain’s Collector Shimmer Spray – this year in the shape and scent of their popular fragrance La Petite Robe Noir. Its shade reflects light onto the skin, and it can be used all over your face, hair and body.

Erase eye shadow mistakes without ruining your make-up! Dip a cotton swab in concealer, then skim it over the skin. The concealer will pick up shadow without smudging. Perfect!

A VERY

COSMOPOLITAN CHRISTMAS

From Irish pubcrawls to Indian Diwali decorations, JO CARUANA meets three foreign families now living in Malta to learn all about their traditions, as well as their plans for a very international ‘Christmas 2013’ in Malta! PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIONEL GALEA AND ALAN CARVILLE

Line and Jani Young Peteri lived in London before moving to Malta, and quickly fell in love with the lifestyle here. Together they run the Young Peteri Creative. Their young children, Lucas, two, and Chloe, ten months, will enjoy traditions from all over the world this Christmas – including South Korea, Denmark and Sweden. J: Malta has a really wonderful soul, culture, history and passion, and we’ve really settled in here; this will be our fifth Christmas in Malta and the preparations are already in full swing.

L: I was born in South Korea and adopted to Denmark, whereas Jani is Finnish but grew up in Sweden – so our lives are pretty international! We have lots of Christmas traditions from around the world – some from our respective homes and others that we’ve collected along the way. L: In Denmark we celebrate Christmas on 24 December, with activities in the evening – so we do that here too! If we were there we’d put our tree up that morning (and it would be a real tree, of course), but here ours goes up before. Celebrating with different friends and family members on both days has become a tradition of ours. L: One of my favourite traditions is making marzipan shapes in the days leading up to Christmas – a true Danish custom. I’ve already got my marzipan and, this year, Lucas and I are going to have a go at making some together. L: These gold Georg Jensen decorations are very popular back home and one is released every year. As with anything you’ve grown up with, you don’t really appreciate them until you’ve moved away! I now get the new one as soon as it comes out. Last year’s shape was a star, and I look forward to my parents bringing me this year’s soon.

J: Royal Copenhagen Porcelain are also very traditional – the finest and most expensive porcelain you can get. They’re the perfect addition to the Christmas dinner table, and we have quite a few pieces. J: In Sweden it’s traditional to eat herring served with schnapps – it’s the best way to impress a Swede at Christmas! Delicacies from Denmark, meanwhile, include sweet brown potatoes, which are delicious. We also cook a selection of duck, roast

pork and Christmas ham, so there’s always a great selection to choose from. L: In Malta I know it’s traditional to have an angel on the tree, but in Denmark it’s a star – the star that led the wise men. We’ve stuck with that tradition since moving. Meanwhile, this Finnish Christmas angel is something Jani has hung on to – one of the decorations that has travelled the distance with us!

The Casey family – mum Nina, dad Liam, and little Alex, six, Sophie, four, and Ruby-Mae, one-and-ahalf, moved from Dublin to Malta last year to facilitate Liam’s job in an iGaming company. This will be the first Christmas they spend in Malta, and they are very much looking forward to it. L: We were excited to be moving to Malta, even though we knew so little about it at the time. We feel very safe here and have had a fantastic experience so far. N: We are a very Christmassy family! Liam tries to slow me down as I am always very excited about getting the decorations up as quickly as possible – and the longest I can wait is 1 December! We both come from Chirstmassy families, so I think it’s pretty ingrained in us.

L: With such a young family we’re now at the stage when we’re starting to make our own traditions. I come from a family of six kids, and we developed things we would do every year. Now we’re at the beginning of that, and our children have definitely brought out the magic of Christmas again. Their faces are always priceless! N: I’ve made some strong connections with people already and now have a wonderful group of friends in Malta. In Ireland, the men have a tradition of going round the ‘12 pubs of Christmas’; this year we’re adopting that for our girls’ night. We’re planning to wear the tackiest Christmas jumpers too! N: The kids always help with the tree and come to the shops to choose decorations, as I like to have new ones each year. We have some personalised ones too – like this Waterford Crystal (which is poignant as that’s where my parents are from). Alex and Sophie were both given one on their first Christmases, but Alex’s sadly broke; and they’d stopped making them by the time Ruby came along! L: This will be our first Christmas away from Ireland. It’ll be a little strange, but travelling with three children is pretty stressful. We’ll miss

“MALTESE GENEROSITY BLEW US AWAY.” home but we’re looking forward to doing our own thing. We’ll retain the tradition of smoked salmon and champagne on Christmas morning, and we are going to cook traditional turkey and ham for lunch, following my mum’s recipe! N: I really want to teach our kids that Christmas isn’t just about the presents. So, last year, I started a gift drive for local orphanages. Maltese generosity blew me away, and I think our children learnt a valuable lesson – especially as the gifts were all here before they were taken to the orphans! They also came with me to speak to the sisters at the crèche; I want them to learn it’s about giving as well as receiving.

The American Embassy’s deputy chief of mission, Michael DeTar, and his Indian wife, Nupur, a talented interior designer, lived in Haiti, Germany, Nepal, Austria and Morocco (to name but a few) before their move to Malta. Together with their children, Liam, 15, and Anneke, 13, they enjoy injecting a good dose of international Christmas flair into their home. M: I stumbled into the foreign service a little later in life and met Nupur on my first foreign service tour. We’ve lived all over the world since then and are pretty international really – I grew up on the East Coast of the United States, Punur was born in Wales but raised in Kolkata, while our children were both born in Europe. M: We’ve adopted a lot of our Christmas traditions from the US. For instance, we usually have a big party during the holidays for colleagues and friends, and we play a particular game called Yankee Christmas. Everyone has to bring a present and place their gift on the table, before drawing a number. ‘Number one’ goes first to pick a gift which they unwrap and ‘number two’ can then choose a new gift – or take away ‘number one’s’ instead! This carries on and it’s great fun. N: Our tree is bursting with decorations from so many places. Haitian voodoo balls, trinkets from Germany and Austria, chilli peppers from Sri Lanka, camels from Morocco, and so much more! Each one is linked to a memory. N: Our crib is a little unconventional too – angels from Haiti, animals from Morocco and baby Jesus from Germany!

N: This ‘Christmas village’ actually started out as a little house I picked up in Austria, but it’s grown quite a bit since! We now have a Moroccan mosque (which is actually an ink pot), a village house from Nepal and a Dutch house. I’m still hoping to add a temple to the collection!

M: We have a collection of nutcrackers and smokers (or incense holders); they’re very typical of Germany and Eastern Europe, and you will probably recognise them from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. N: We got this Buddha from Sri Lanka and he often gets dolled up to suit the season. He’s got a Santa hat on now – but it was a Halloween hat a few weeks back! N: I wasn’t actually raised celebrating Christmas – but I grew to love it when I travelled round Europe. Back home we celebrate Diwali, a Hindu festival known as the ‘festival of light’. To us it is as important as Christmas, and I like to mark it every year. To do that, Anneke and I draw Indian symbols on the floor. These designs are mostly freehand, but we also paint the footprints of the goddess Laxmi near the front door as she is said to bring prosperity into your home. M: I was raised celebrating Thanksgiving and it’s still one of my favourite holidays. I handle the cooking for it, and it’s my culinary achievement of the year! I love the fact that we can use the local produce here; it’s delicious. One of my favourite aspects is our tradition of going round the table to say what we’re each thankful for – before we dig in to a feast! o

CURED FISH TERRINE WRAPPED IN LOBSTER CARPACCIO WITH PAN-FRIED QUAIL EGG AND CARAMELISED LANGOUSTINE - Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 x 100g grouper fillets; 1 lobster; 4 quail eggs; coarse salt For the terrine: 750g cooked prawns; coriander; 20g lard; 3 egg whites; 50ml white wine; salt and pepper For the caramelised langoustines: 1 langoustine (per person); 50g sugar; 20g butter

Cure the grouper by burying the fillets in coarse salt for 24 hours, then remove, wash thoroughly, dry using paper kitchen towels and put aside. To prepare the terrine, chop the prawns and lard, pour in the white wine, egg white, salt and pepper, and mix. Shape the mixture with the coriander into a terrine and steam in a steamer for five minutes. Allow to chill and insert into your desired mould to fit the cured grouper. Shell the lobster, slice into ¼ inch medallions, wrap around the terrine and steam for one minute. Chill immediately. To prepare the caramelised langoustines, remove them from their shell and poach for three minutes in water at 90°C, and chill immediately. Then, put the sugar and butter in a pan, bring to caramel stage and put the langoustines in it for three minutes. Crack the quail eggs gently into a pan on a very low heat and add some oil. To assemble, place the cured grouper on a plate, top it with the prawn terrine, then the poached langoustines and finally the fried quail eggs. Serve immediately.

Clean the pork belly and put aside. Toast the fennel seeds and peppercorns in a dry frying pan for a couple of minutes, then transfer to a mortar and crush. Add flaked sea salt, thyme and garlic, and mash into a paste. Mix with two tbsps of olive oil and rub all over the flesh of the pork belly. Allow to marinate overnight. To make the braised belly, rub the skin with salt and olive oil, cover it and place in an oven at 175째C. When ready, remove from the liquid and let it rest overnight. Before serving, remove excess fat, seal the fat side for four minutes and warm for 15 minutes, covered, in an oven. Chop the herbs and breadcrumbs for the crust and put aside. Clean the pork fillet, seal in a hot pan and cook to your liking. Brush with French mustard and roll it in the crust mix. Put aside. To make the shank croquettes, cook the pork shank in vegetable stock for two hours. When ready, flake the meat and mix with chopped onions, mascarpone cheese and herbs. Shape into small balls with the palms of your hands, pass through flour, eggs and breadcrumbs, and fry in hot oil. To assemble, reheat belly and fillet, and place a slice of pork belly first, top with the fillet and place the shank croquettes around. Serve warm.

RASPBERRY AND WHITE CHOCOLATE TERRINE, APPLE CRUMBLE AND PRALINE ICE-CREAM

To make the terrine, boil the sugar with a little water and pour over the egg yolks while whisking. Fold in the purée (made buy whizzing the raspberries in a food processor) with the gelatine, then add whipped cream and the melted white chocolate. Spoon into the desired mould and put aside. Before serving garnish with fresh raspberries. For the tart, start by making the pastry. In a large bowl add the flour and butter, and rub together using the tips of your fingers, add the 150g of sugar and rub together, mix in the egg and some milk to create the soft dough. Then, line a tart tray with the sweet pastry and refrigerate. To make the crumble, pre-heat the oven at 180°C. Place the flour, oats and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl, and rub the butter into the flour using the tips of your fingers. Stir in sugar and rub again. Drizzle the syrup over and mix with a knife to create small clusters, and put aside. Finally, chop and cook the apples in butter, sugar and vanilla. Allow to cool and spoon into the lined tart tray, cover with the crumble and bake for 30 minutes. To make the praline ice-cream, you first need to make the praline paste. Line a large baking tray with baking paper and put aside. Put the sugar and water into a saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves, then bring it to the boil without stirring. Once the caramel is a deep, golden brown, add the nuts to the mixture and swirl around. Place the nuts onto the baking tray and allow to cool, then crush in a food processor until they reach a ‘paste’ state, put aside. Bring the milk together with the cream and half of the sugar to a boil. Then whisk the egg yolks in a large mixing bowl and temper them while slowly and gently pouring in the milk mixture, whisking continuously. Add the rest of the sugar and the vanilla extract, mix well, and place in the ice-cream churner with the praline paste. To assemble, place the tart on the middle of the plate, put the terrine next to it and place a dollop of praline ice cream on top. Serve immediately. o
