Competition Work for Tropical Architecture Design by Singapore Green Building Council

Why a Hive ? Inspired by beehive shape that maximizing uses of the space, and hexagonal shape that fostering resident and neighbours to interact between floor levels

This project is situated at the same location of 'Spiral Hotel' project, but using a different approach. Interconnecting urban lifestyle The concept of mixed-use housing is based on Abraham Mashlow's theory: hierarchy of needs. The fourth is esteem, all humans a need to feel respected, this includes the need to have self-esteem and self-respect. The fifth is self-actualization, this level of needs refers to what person's full potential and desire to realization of that potential.

Function : Residential Site Area : 11,566 sqm Company : PT. Arta Estetika

Dago Giri RESIDENCES DAGO GIRI HILLS

The project is located on suburban area of Bandung. The housing are surrounded by low level housing, green nature and valley. Modern-suburban living in Bandung The site has unique features, which located on sloped land and fairly steep. So the design is planned to adapt and to maximize its natural potential.

Types of Houses and Configuration on The Site

The type of the houses are divided into two categories, eight houses at the front are couple-house type, and the houses at inner zone are singular type houses. The type of the houses are differentiated to suit the place its been built. The front site has more steep land, whilst on the back not as much as it is. The facade of the couple-house are designed quite similar, but the layout of the rooms can be distinguished into type A and type B. This difference was created to give privacy between houses, so the window did not face each other directly, but still able to maximize the scenery. The difference between type A and type B can be seen on the back face of the couple-house.

Master Plan

Tapas Bar & Beach Club

This building initially functioned as tapas bar adjacent to beach club, where people can hand around while enjoying sunset but less crowded than beach club. Therefore the designer placed couples of dining tables, and lounge style sofas while the other can hang around on tapas bar area. The sails tied to the palm trees being used here to bring beach style atmosphere into the dining area, while the play of the floor levels and curved shape make the tapas bar more groovy.

Later on further developments the tapas bar was merged with adjacent beach club, which located in front of tapas bar. This is done to reduce amount of the function that available in the complex and more ease for operational management later on. Then former land for tapas bar will be changed into garden for residents.

Beach Grill

The owner's desire to have beach grill building was came quite late compared to others building. This building being made to complement beach recreation venue alongside with beach club & tapas bar. Main concept of this building is to be completely different than others but still maintain its suitability with surroundings. The results is design using the combination of white-washed brick to create lombok pattern packed in industrial styled building.

Boutique

This boutique located at far front of the site, surrounded by parking area. The aim is to make this boutique building stand out and be seen by the guest. The boutique are shrouded by large glass exterior facade, so the display can be seen by the people outside. The display window specifically designed to make the object clearly visible by making the platform ascending to the corner. Interior design quite playfull to express chicness of the design and items inside.

Gym

Gym is another complementary function for this complex. The design quite simple, yet still maintain the suitability to the other buildings. The shape adapt from the shape of the villas, with oblique columns and low pitched roof. The building located not far from the boutique and parking area, so this gym building is easy to be accessed.

Lenmakana, West Papua - Indonesia

Function : Resort Site Information : Lenmakana & Banos Island, Kab. Raja Ampat, Prov. Papua Barat Company : PT Inspiral Architects

Waikahutu LENMAKANA ISLAND

RESORT

Waikahutu resort located on Indonesia's internationally renowned diving spot cluster, Raja Ampat. The resort will be built on Lenmakana Island. Exclusive luxurious resort on remote island with exquisite view The resort intended for people who wants to withdraw themselves from city crowd, and take peaceful holiday with numerous outdoor activities.

The proposal looks to create a series of villages throughout the site. This creates the feeling of exclusivity in each zone and allows some variation in the type of accommodation. It also means that the site usage can be maximized and gives flexibilty for phasing and further growth if required. For the resort compex itself, it creates a series areas of interest which encourage guests to stay for long periods of time and use the full extent of facilities to offer. Zones: Main resort 1. Security & dock 1 2. Diving center 3. Reception 4. Kayak & snorkling port 5. Multi function platform 6. Sunset beach club 7. Tapas bar 8. Tennis court & playground area 9. Aquarium Lounge

The owner of this resort specifically requested extravagant features to make this whole resort stand out compared to other resort ever been built around. Thus the aquarium lounge catch their interest. As the first place to welcome the guests, this lounge offers a unique dome attached with layers of shades which allows natural light and air to penetrate into the building and create natural comfort inside. The experience inside is like entering a gentle whirlpool taking you down into the sea to experience first hand the magical sea life below. The space and structure takes on the spiralling effect and at its centre is a double spiral stair taking the guest down into the aquarium lounge. Here guests can relax and enjoy the clear view of the colourfull surrounding coral and marine life.

Dive Center As diving is perhaps the main recreational attraction for guests coming to the resort, the dive centre will need to be a fully equipped, first class facility. Therefore every aspect of diving from learning facilities, briefing rooms, sales, equipment preparation etc will need to flow smoothly from one process to other. Its overall location is close to the main jetty for ease of access for both guests and reloading dive boats. The design mainly based on requirement fucntions, and packed in a natural-look building. The roof using thatch just like one of traditional papua's tribe houses, and wood material as wall element.

Reception This building will hold significant importance as it is the first sense of the resort in operation upon arrival. It therefore must portray the resorts brand, icon attributes and quality from the offset. A process will then emerge of welcoming and then hosting the guest. The main feeling that that is presented here is that the integrity of the island has been maintained. Therefore the buildings look to merge into the existing rock formations as if these spaces emerged from the hillside. The roof of the reception are accessible, it will lead to natural rock tunnel right above the reception.. Their covering is green and very natural. In a practical sense, this also helps to maintain as much beach space as possible. The tunnel also one of the outdoot activity feature of Waikahutu resort This area will be multi functional, as it is a space to relax by the beach and enjoy cinema over the sea, with a bar plus the requirements of a meeting room and a library.

Tapas Bar The tapas bar is located on the route from the beach club towards the other beach areas and intended to be a stopping point for a lighter alternate dining destination. Its design still correlate with reception building by using natural rocks as roof and apparent structural elements. Because this tapas bar also located right next to rocky cliff. While the rock itself is a sturdy figure of the nature, then the membrane which floats above the dining space is a portrayal of flexibility. A balance is created by combining the design between rocks, trees and membrane. The purpose is to gives a secure yet calm and breezy atmosphere at the bar.

Two Bedroom Landed Villa This two bedroom landed villa took concept based on mountain shape, because this Lenmakana island has many pointy rock formation and it appear just like a mountain. The triangular shape in this building are combination between simplicity and semiotik design for the mountain. This accommodation would need to feel connected to the surrounding landscape by using soft flowing forms made up of tactile natural materials. They would also help to form a further identity of the resort through their unique appearance. The space themselves would be fairly generous with options for open living while designed in way which minimize energy consumption. To maintain quality and for ease of construction, it would be most efficient if they were designed as knock down structures, constructed on nearest city then assembled on site.

One Bedroom Landed Villa This one bedroom landed villa took same concept from two bedroom landed villa. This one bedroom villa just cut the triangle shape of two bedroom villa shorter. It is done in order to maintain strong connection between one bedroom and two bedroom landed villa. Both one bedroom and two bedroom villa has open sky bathroom at ground level, and also has open back terrace facing right to the white sandy beach.
