I found it interesting that participants across all age groups thought they had changed a lot in the past 10 years but felt they would change very little over the next 10 years. Two constants in life are change and our fight against it. What would it look like if we took a jackhammer to the concrete-like image we have of ourselves? our ever present self image. It could be said that clothing is the very first emoticon, the smiley faces and icons used in text messages. There are more than 700 emoji icons. I probably use 20 on a regular basis to express mood or emotion. In a season that could best be described as a series of moods rather than trends, there's no better time to experiment with our fashion emojis.

Take your Facebook news feed for example. People don’t post pictures of themselves getting out of bed pre-makeup in the morning. People post the most filtered, airbrushed and posed pictures. I admit my own guilt in this. I believe this leads us to cling to the familiar. We don’t try new things for fear we won’t do it as well as the images that inspired us. Sounds silly, but nothing could be more true. The

new language. “Ugly” often translates to different. “It makes me look old” rephrased may mean a shoe has a strap. Yes, the struggle is real. However, the opportunity is even more real! Before my mother and I were having all kinds of fun implementing new things into her visual vernacular, she had a very real image of how she was supposed to dress and had been wearing the same thing for 20 years. If that describes you, it doesn’t mean you aren’t fashionable. With kids and or a career, who has time to keep up with it all? We all dress the way we dress because we are comfortable with it.

Here is the opportunity of a lifetime. Yes, the only constant is change but we spend more time fighting it than making it work for us. Maybe you’ve been thrown into the clutches of change or perhaps you're secretly tired of the way things have been for decades. Merriam-Webster’s first definition of frontier is; a border between two countries. This season give yourself permission to travel across the border of the world in which you live and explore the opportunity waiting for you in a new land. Unlike the early settlers of the Americas, you don’t have to hop on a covered wagon and travel far from home, but

Talking Points noun A talking point in debate or discourse can be a succinct statement designed to support persuasively one side taken on an issue. In the world of fashion, carefully crafted talking points can be the perfect preparation and necessary confidence to participate in a conversation with any fashionista.

Last fall the spinning wheel and its byproduct took center stage on the runway and this fall continues the theme. Knitted sweaters, coats, scarves and gloves are found in virtually every collection. Despite the differences, all reinforce the movement toward old school skill paired with new world fashion. Lindsay Thornburg’s entire collection is comprised of the most whimsical knitted pieces. Soft wool sings a beautiful song throughout the collection. Ralph Lauren showcased knits in both his signature collection and

9

across the Polo collection. Greg Lauren, the newest on my list of favorite designers, took a more rugged and elemental approach to his most visible knits with a collection of scarves that were almost completely comprised of chunked yarn. When an element, material or craft spans the collections of top billing magnetos of the fashion world like Ralph Lauren, through newer presentations, like M Patmos, you can feel confident working it into your season's lineup.

January 16th DSquared2 presented their Fall 2015 menswear collection in Milan. Celebrating 20 years of the DSquared2 label and their Canadian roots, the brothers overwhelmed the world with wolf pelts used in an epic way. Wolf hats, coats, vests, cuffs and scarves made an unforgettable, and as usual, over the top presentation. Since that day, I’ve been saying “PETA is going to have a field day with this season's runway.” In the first 30 years of the 20th century fur placed its goliath footprint in the fashion world. While the public

view of fur turned in the 1980’s and 90’s, like all pendulums, things swing the other way. Tom Ford showed lustful pelts as pallets throughout his collection. Kate Spade showed a fur clutch, Gucci did a series of long hair slippers, Elie Taharie did wonderful cuffs and collars. Wear what you dare and proudly enjoy your fur coats this season. If you have a fur piece going unused, consider having it altered, and made into something you would enjoy more regularly.

During the last decade, the traditional men’s wardrobe has evolved and with its own touch of femininity now finds its self on the other side of the his and her's closet. 2015 has been the year of "Boy For Girl” dress. I would say it is one of the few, very few, elements that could even be called a trend this season. Some call it the death of the lady, others could call it the most beautiful evolution of modern day feminism. While I, as much as anyone, appreciate the days of shoes matching handbags in the “hi, honey I’m home” era,

there’s something undeniably beautiful and glamorous about Ralph Lauren’s man tailored woman’s tuxedo for formal wear ( #10 ) and the Henry Tudor's style structured top by Louis Vuitton (#7.) Giambattista Valli, creative mind behind Moncler Gamme Rouge, showed a parade of riding coats that paid homage to historic British crown and sport. My favorite is the red coat and keys of her majesty’s Yeoman Warders, often called Beefeaters ( #9.) Smother the most manly things in girl power this season.

Let’s be honest. Atlanta isn’t the city most in need of heavy coats and there’s little new about the use of layers in fashion. However, there is so much that can be done to make one's wardrobe fresh and current by layering pieces you may already have while adding one or two new pieces for a plethora of updated combinations. Banana Republic’s collection is comprised of almost all very simple pieces that have been paired together to create a technical and polished look. For example, image (#2) may seem a bit avant guard for

many, but broken down, its a cute corduroy vest over a black camisole with a jacket on top. Yes, winter white is very in right now and though the red belt probably wouldn’t have been your first thought, it totally makes the outfit. One outer layer that I’ve seen repeatedly is the poncho. Last year there was a vast array of houndstooth, scotch and herringbone across many collections. It seems that tweed has prevailed and continues to trend. Have some fun, and remember that the right confidence can make just about anything work.

At first thought, you might quickly peg the broach as an accessory for the lady over 70. But much like straps on shoes and seamed stockings, broaches have not only become mainstream for all ages, they span the collections of designers in every psychographic category. Like all old things made new again, the bigger, glitzier and more fabulous they are, the better. There's little doubt that many of you will have a drawer full of broaches you either used to wear or inherited from a mother or grandmother. It's time to move them into

9

10

your daily lineup. In keeping with the gender-bending trends like "boy for girl," this ladies' fashion accessory has jumped over to menswear as well. While Coach and Fausto Puglisi use the collage approach, others present a more traditional single piece. Interestingly, as many "hey, look at me," busy, glitzy pieces as were shown, there were also a large number of simple, oversized safety pins as well. Show off all those great broaches in the back of your jewelry drawer this season. You'll be right on point.

Skinny Jeans

Ok... You might think I am crazy, but this isn't a joke and let me tell you why. Have you been buying the same cut of jeans for years? Well, it is time to jump out of your comfort zone. I'll let you in on a secret. When you're in a shop looking at jeans, you'll probably find a few cuts; Boot, Straight, Slim and Skinny. While Boot, Straight and Slim are typically 100% cotton/ denim, Skinnys are almost always part Spandex. I can't even get slim jeans past my knees, but in the right brand, I feel great in the skinny! Give it a try this season.

tions Sandy Springs. People complementing my shoes, now, happens all the time. I’m still not used to it. I have been wearing ugly shoes for years! When i was 21 years old I tore some tendons in my right foot. After a long struggle to recover from that, at 32 I started suffering from bone spurs in each of my heels. I had been in pain for years and to add insult to injury, my shoe situation always left me feeling depressed when getting dressed. When you’re stuck wearing really ugly shoes, your desire to get dressed everyday slowly fades away. What’s the point? Dressy dinners and events were the worst. When I met Marsha and Brian my “shoe life” changed. In one meeting, the potential for having shoes I liked went from 0-60. I had struggled with bulky orthotics for the better part of my life. Marsha made new inserts for me that were less cumbersome. The new inserts and gorgeous shoes with removable inserts have been a significant change in my life. Each season I look forward to adding styles and colors to my closet. The exciting and special shoes from Think! were previously, something I had only dreamed of. I enjoy getting dressed each day with shoes that provide the support I need and style I love. I encourage everyone to try something new. You, too, may know the joy of being stopped in a parking lot or when you enter a room and being told what wonderful shoes you have on. ♥

We are all familiar with the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." The same applies to style and fashion. Not a day goes by that someone comes in and says, "oh, no that's so ugly." Just a few minutes or hours later, someone else picks up the same shoe and it's their absolute dream! The truth is, many of the shoes we carry come from Europe. We in the States are often slower to catch on to European trends. While you may think some of our styles look "old" they might just be a little ahead of what you're used to see-

11

ing. These are some examples of styles shown on this season's runway. Notice anything common amongst them? Man tailoring, ankle straps, rounded toes, patent for fall / winter, white sneakers and lots of flat or lower heels. One concern I encounter over and over questions short boots and cropped pants. Since short boots are the current trend, it is not only acceptable to see a little skin abover the boot and below the hem line, its very fashionable. Forget your preconceived notions, it is the age of trying, even rocking something new.

I've always loved knowing just a little bit about everything so that I could participate in most any discussion intelligently. Here are 4 excellent factoids to keep in your pocket for that "aha" moment. First, Dolce & Gabbana have created a line of epic headphones. You, too, can look like a queen, listen to music and take a call. Secondly, pearls are huge. Little is as classic as a strand of pearls, or 10. Chanel turns heads with the collar in image #2. Stella McCartney caught my eye with some beautiful arrangements, especially the structured pearl necklace in image #3. 6

If you watch Game of Thrones, you'll be familiar with Brienne of Tarth. If you don't, let me introduce you to factoid three and what has been dubbed her belt treatment. Extra long belts have been wrapped and are on everything with and without belt loops. Note the use and juxtaposition of the very dressy coat and skirt synched with a very casual belt in image #7 from Donna Karan. Lastly, structured bags are the ticket this season, including a new series of handbags and train cases from Louis Vuitton.

Has anyone ever found that while your husband always wants you to look nice, he hasn’t tried anything new in years? Well, lets get them up to date. As I continue to suggest, simply update their jeans. If nothing else, every time you’re at the mall, bring home a different number of Levi’s for him to try. From the original 501’s to 569’s, there’s bound to be something you can agree on. Please note the resurgence of the vest. Three piece suits are everything at the moment. Whenever vests are trending there will also be pocket watches as shown

This is an amazing use of denim with the vest, coat and tie. Tweed, bomber, knit cotton or sailor's pea coat, update your look with a great coat. Loose the nylon windbreaker, pull out the blue jean jacket from the 80’s or find a nice new piece to make you feel great.

section 2

The Worksheet compound noun A worksheet commonly refers to a sheet of paper with questions for someone to record answers. Regarding ones personal fashion or sense of style, a worksheet is a tool to organize ideas and desires for personal evolution in the coming season.

29

Follow These Easy Steps! 1 Preparation This process should be fun! To ensure maximum enjoyment, make sure to put a smile on your face and a drink in your hand.

2 Purge! Martini in hand, head to the closet. No matter how big the closet is, it always seems full, right? Make 3 piles. One, "love it, keep it, I wear it." Two, "I don't wear it but I'd like to." Three, "give away."If you haven't worn it in more than a year, it is probably safe to get rid of it. If you haven't worn it in 10 years, it's gotta go! If you haven't worn it in 30 years... It might actually work again.... but probably not. Ahhh! Doesn't that feel better?

3 Mix-n-Match It's easier than it sounds. Once you get the ball rolling, things fall into place. With your fully charged iPhone, open the camera. Lay out your favorite outfits, one by one, including shoes and accesories and snap a photo. For best results, make sure there's plenty of light. Yes, this works with other brands of phones ;)

4 Identify Your Favorites Ever feel like you're always wearing the same things? Take a look through what's left. Let's find some patterns. Are all your favorites the same color, material or cut? Knowing your favorite cuts for separates is useful. It makes shopping easier later. So lets make a list for easy access later! Also, it helps to know sizes for specific brands or cuts within a brand when you head to the mall.

5 Missing Something? Now the real fun begins! There are probably some holes in your wardrobe. Look at the pile of things you wanted to keep which didn't have a pairing. What pieces had only one or two matches? Is there an outfit that is just missing shoes or accessories? Take another look through this book. Check out the Talking Points section. See what you love and what might work with what you already have. Lets make another list. Keep it general... "Marsala colored top to go with jeans." "Long brown belt to wrap." "Audrey Hepburn shoe on page 43." "Awesome crisp white 'boy for girl' dress shirt!"

6 Time to go to Foot Solutions! Phone in hand, with your pictures, lets look at the holes in your shoe wardrobe. Let us help with ideas and new styles. It amazes me how a fun new shoe can, by itself, make so many of the outfits already in your closet look and feel new. Despite the name, Foot Solutions, we do actually know more about fashion and making it work for you than one would expect.

7 The dreaded mall, made easy... Since we got your shoe situation all figured out for the season, the only thing left to do is head to the mall and finish up your clothes. Whether you dread the mall or can't wait to go back, here are a few tips to make your trip a little more fun. Rule #1 in Brian's Shopping Bible, when you're trying something on, don't cower in the mirror. Having taken countless people shopping, I find that when someone is trying something on, they almost always slouch. When trying on something outside of your comfort zone, stand tall and smile. You wouldn't slouch like that in public. Rule #2 I've borrowed from my parents' years of experience in the photography industry, "If it ain't pretty, hide it." Let me explain. You've found the perfect pair of shoes for the season, at Foot Solutions Sandy Springs, of course. As perfect as the shoes are, the pants you normally wear just won't work. Trying on new skinny jeans or some leggings you see that it's almost perfect, but you're not thrilled with just above the button... Time to find a long shirt! The right length top can make things you've always avoided suddenly work. Rule #3 Shop for one category at a time. Few people like to stay at the mall for hours on end shopping for clothes. While I always keep my eyes open for an off schedule find, I like to shop for one section of the wardrobe per trip. If I'm looking for pants, I wear a shoe that's easier to get off and on, skip the button fly, empty my pockets and wear one of my favorite tops. Shopping for tops and outerwear; very best jeans or slacks, and shoes that will go with the catagory. Wearing a button up shirt when shopping for tops saves your hair at least 2 passes of your own clothes per dressing room. Rule #4 is paramount if you expect to have any success. I'm a huge proponent of having a shopping buddy, but they MUST be selected carefully. Many people that have a great sense of personal style aren't very good about helping others craft theirs. Choose someone that doesn't make you feel vulnerable, you probably know if your daughter will be the right choice... Try on everything you take to the dressing room AND show it to your buddy. Even if you think something is totally wrong, it might end up being just what you've always wanted.

Most importantly, don't forget your tools, including this book. My hope is for it to be helpful for more than just showcasing our excellent shoes. If you've read this far, hopefully you will have written your list on the previous page. I'm sure I'm not the only one that forgets what they are looking for after 5 minutes at the mall. Good luck and have fun!

Season after season I find myself amused at what the designers are wearing to their shows. Everyone knows Ralph Lauren. Do you know what he looks like? What do you think he wore to his runway show? To a room filled with rows of the fashion elite, Tuscan columns in the background, grand chandeliers hanging over the runway and the roar of applause, Lauren walks out in a blue and white flannel shirt, light wash blue jeans and hiking boots. While the avant guard of the runway may be the face of fashion, you may not be that

different from the creative minds behind it. Diane von Furstenberg is a reminder that we can rock the runway at any age. Stella McCartney looks wonderful in her short boots and gaucho pants. Next time you think big jewelry looks silly, remember the necklace Donna Karan has on. Marissa Webb’s rocking her white bell bottoms while Tory Burch has on something that might just surprise you. It doesn’t take their name to try something new, its the confidence of their personality.

#3 Life In Color

Contrary to popular belief, black doesn't go with everything. Of course, we all need a black shoe, maybe two, but try a little something new. We love reds. Red is an excellent choice for a neutral. Try a cooler red or chianti a try this season!

M•A•C Makeup

It's true, at first glance, the MAC counter looks a bit more like a place your children or grandchildren may shop. Despite the enveloping edginess, the kind and talented people there are always happy to help! My mom says, "As we get older, less is better." We got her started with the Studio Fix powder. If you're feeling like your makeup is a bit heavy... Give MAC a try this season!
