A Note from the Publisher / Editor-in-Chief
From Mira Jantz, Publisher / Editor-in-Chief
Welcome to the sixth issue of Bridal Couture Magazine! The Central Valley is overflowing with wedding inspiration and we are delighted to pull in our favorites elements to share with you. Throughout this issue and on BridalCoutureMag.com we’ve included details from our Featured Weddings to the latest in wedding fashion, our favorite hair styles, choice wedding rings, and more. Most important I have found the significance in keeping up with changes and 2013 marks a momentous time in the wedding world as same-sex marriage becomes legal in California. Refining our publication to unite all newly engaged couples in context was of great urgency. As you turn the pages of this issue I hope you find friends, family, loved ones, ideas, creative thoughts, talented vendors, but most of all inspiration to create your special day no matter what format, arrangement, theme, or style. —Mira Jantz Publisher / Editor-in-Chief Mira Jantz Copy Editor Publisher / Editor-in-Chief Mira Jantz with her husband, Mike and daughter Betty Mantel Lee Kaitlin at UNVEILED 2013 Contributing Writers Tiffany Jantz Layout Design Mira Jantz Contributing Photographers Stephanie Baker, Jamie Bearg, Lori Makabe, Kori & Jared Heuvel, Charleton Churchill, Scot Woodman, Amber Collins, Holly Smith, Bogdan Condor To our readers: Bridal Couture Magazine welcomes your feedback. Aisle Style Downton Style Cue “The Suite” by the Chamber Orchestra of London as we find wedding inspiration of the early
1900’s.
Those who loathe Lady Mary’s dreadful decisions are at the same time enraptured in her love for Matthew. Amid tales of love, scandal and perfectly placed china, the Downton Abbey effect is much like the Real Housewives, but with proper etiquette and poise.
While most wedding details were not seen in the long awaited walk down the aisle, Lady Mary’s attire was not missed. Consider these looks inspired by the Edwardian Era to set the tone for your nuptials.

No, you may not have your own footman, but consider the formality of the time starting with a refined and formal wedding invitation announcing a black-tie affair, tray passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails before a plated dinner, and not forgetting the importance of a choreographed duet of the wait staff. Be sure to hit the dance floor in 1900’s style, following the example of Irene and Vernon Castle by doing the Foxtrot or Tango. Kalyn & Nicolas Belletto Married May 11, 2013
Sparks first flew for Nic and Kalyn when they met at a 2009 stock car race that Nic was driving in. From there, Nic and Kalyn’s romance took off, culminating in the couple’s enchanting wedding on May 11th, 2013. The guests gathered for the reception held in the Stortroen family’s masterfully-restored, brown barn in Lodi, California. “My sister Jennifer & I grew up playing around the old barn while visiting our grandparents,” Kalyn shared. “It has held many wonderful childhood memories.” To add some sparkle for the day of the wedding, the bride and groom’s families adorned the brown barn with mercury glass and chandeliers. Guests were welcomed to their seats with Belletto family almond favors. The wedding decorations were colored in classic grey and white which was juxtaposed with a splash of color from Kalyn’s handmade bouquets. As the sun went down, Nic and Kalyn joined with their friends and family in dancing late into the night to the music of Tongue & Groove. According to the couple, all of the moments of this magical event added up to create “truly the best day ever!” Congratulations Kalyn & Nicolas

Brooke & Nick Gaither Married October 20, 2012
Nick and Brooke first met at their favorite burger spot when they were each 17 years old. After eight years of friendship and romance, Nick proposed to Brooke at Brook’s father’s 50th birthday celebration. “It was so special to have all of our family and close friends with us,” Brooke recalls. Eighteen months after he popped the question, the couple said their vows at the dazzling Palm Event Center in the Livermore wine valley. The couple chose black and white as their wedding colors to establish a simple, yet elegant look for the occasion. Their monogram logo, B & N, was printed on the save-the-dates, the invitations, and the menu cards. The couple said their vows in the exquisite Estate Room, in front of an arch created from soft-white drapery and embellished with flower rings. In place of traditional favors, the couple gave donations to the American Cancer Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation on the behalf of each guest. The fun music of KJ and the All Stars had everyone on the dance floor late into the evening giving everyone a night to remember. Nick and Brooke were thrilled with the way that the event came together. These happy newlyweds look forward to a bright future together: enjoying time with friends and family, boating, and catching some Giants games. Congratulations Brooke & Nick

Samantha & Yaser Herrera Married May 4, 2013
Yaser first met Samantha when she began working at his family’s restaurant, La Parrilla. Samantha’s “beautiful smile and captivating personality” are what first drew him to her, Yaser explains. After a six-year-long loving courtship, Yaser proposed to Samantha on his birthday. During the year of wedding planning, Samantha used several websites to help inspire and organize the special day. The couple took on many DIY projects such as their monogrammed cake topper, place cards, and even adding a little flare to the bride’s shoes. Guests had a fun time posing with props in the photo booth. The resulting photo strips made for great favors! The wedding celebration was a complete success. Yaser and Samantha advise couples who are currently planning their wedding to, “stay organized…don’t let the planning bog you down…and enjoy every minute [of the wedding day] because time flies!”
Congratulations Samantha & Yaser

Ashley & Ricky Hogan Married August 4, 2012
For more of Samantha & Yaser’s wedding, visit bridalcouturemag.com Ashley and Ricky met during their junior year of high school when they exchanged numbers at a baseball tournament. In their eight-year-long relationship leading up to their engagement, Ashley and Ricky’s love bloomed despite having to overcome the obstacles of demanding college schedules, divergent career paths, and distance. The couple had to plan their special day while in school, but with lots of help from their families the day came together perfectly. Held at The River Mill in French Camp, the wedding was full of DIY projects from escort keys to cups for the candy bar that read, “Love is sweet. Take a treat!” The colors and decorations were inspired by the mum flower. Ashley “love[s] the color of the flower and the way that it sits among other flowers.” Perhaps the most unique DIY project was the paper mustaches that each guest received upon arrival at the ceremony. The couple’s friends and family were asked to hold up their mustaches as the bride walked down the aisle. Everyone had such a fun time with the mustaches, many of the guests ended up using them on the dance floor which made for a memorable ending to this beautiful wedding.

Carissa & Brittney England Married March 22, 2013
Six months after meeting through mutual friends, Carissa and Brittney’s romantic love story began-over a bowl of fried ice cream. “The story changes depending on whose telling it,” revealed Carissa. Brittney recalls Carissa showing up to a friendly lunch and ordering dessert rather than an entrée suggesting that what Carissa really wanted was to spend time with Brittney. Carissa playfully contests that she just really likes the dish. Regardless of how their relationship began, the couple say that they fell in love soon after. After becoming engaged, the couple faced unique obstacles to their marriage because of the issue of marriage equality in California. “When you become engaged, there are sad, uncomfortable, and unavoidable questions like, are you engaged indefinitely until same-sex marriage is legally recognized?” the couple noted. According to the couple, “becoming domestic partners… definitely [felt] like settling for second-class status.” Despite the legal barriers, Carissa and Brittney knew they wanted to make a life-long commitment to each other and so they began planning their dream wedding.
M 58
BRIDALCOUTUREMAG.COM
Brittney always dreamed of having a large wedding. She valued more traditional wedding practices, such as not seeing Carissa’s dress before the wedding. On the other hand, Carissa wanted a more intimate ceremony. Her vision was a more modern approach to the affair as evidenced by her feather-bodice dress. The two met a happy compromise with a medium sized wedding and a co-ed wedding party. The wedding dÊcor was in black and white with deep red accents which the florist described as a combination of drama and romance. Guests enjoyed several personal touches created by the couple such as the cigar bar accompanied by custom matchbooks and mini Gallo Cabernet wine bottles personalized by Carissa and Brittney with some of their favorite pictures.

Carissa and her son, Ethan, walked down the aisle to the sounds of a harpist. With their hands bound together, Brittney and Carissa exchanged individually-written vows of love and devotion. Brittney also exchanged vows and a gift with Carissa’s son. Though their wedding took place in March, Carissa and Brittney participated in their official ceremony on July 1st, after proposition 8 was overturned in California, thus allowing the state of California to recognize their love and commitment to each other as equal and legal.

Melissa & Blake McCall Married November 2, 2012
When Blake and Melissa went on their first ever blind-date, they didn’t expect it would also be their last! The happy couple hit it off instantly, sharing common beliefs, priorities, and plans for the future. On the day the couple was getting baptized at Folsom Lake, Blake asked Melissa to marry him- and they were married that same day! While Blake and Melissa were dating, they often talked about having a wedding on the gorgeous beaches of Carmel. They agreed that, though already married, they still wanted a wedding with their family and friends in Carmel. The bride and groom worked non-stop on the event arrangements and in just three short months, the couple was on their way to their dream destination wedding.

Each guest received a hand-written invitation to the event which arrived in its own bottle. Inspired by Melissa and Blake’s love of the ocean, the wedding was nautical themed complete with a sea shell wedding cake! During the ceremony, the over 24 members of the wedding party walked bare-footed down the aisle. As part of the sand ceremony, Melissa and Blake broke sand dollars and poured the sand into a frame which held a picture of the loving couple. Guests were invited to their seats with sea horse place cards and sea shell menus set atop a picture of the couple. Dolphins were spotted jumping in the distance and a friendly seal came up to congratulate the newlyweds. The sun set on a wedding day couldn’t have been more enchanting for Blake and Melissa.

With their matching relaxed personalities and taste for adventure, the two hit it off right away. After the couple became engaged, they agreed that they wanted a stress-free, intimate occasion that reflected their fun-loving attitudes. Christine and Andrew decided on the magnificent shores of Cancun, Mexico. After a couple of years of friendship and love, the two decided to get married. The couple agreed on hosting an outdoor wedding celebration almost immediately. For the ease of the guests, they chose to have both the ceremony and reception in the same location. “Our planning mantra was ‘We want our guests to have fun’,” Lindzi noted. From the lawn games, to the ice cream station, even down to the details of the bridal gown, the couple’s unique personalities were infused into every detail of the enchanting event. The theme of the wedding, vintage simplicity and rustic effortlessness, was conveyed with burlap and lace in the décor. The palatte of the wedding included neutrals with a peachy-pink undertone. On the wedding day, the couple exchanged their own unique messages of love in front of their dearest friends and family. Guests enjoyed dancing the night away to the sounds of Whiskey Picnic and Sounds in Motion or playing a friendly game of bean bag toss. Favors included a DIY ice cream bar created by the bride and the maid of honor as well as custom honey jars from Burch Bees. While the two have family in sunny Florida, they decided to have their wedding in warm California, where Jessica was stationed. The couple was able to work around their demanding military schedules by dividing up the wedding planning and multiple DIY projects amongst themselves and their friends and family. When two old souls collide and share a love of modern art, style, and sophistication, they are bound to have a breathtaking and timeless wedding that is a statement within itself. Heather and William did not spare any expense to create their perfect wedding. The fine paper invitations embellished with satin set the tone for this memorable, black-tie event. As guests arrived, they could view the Rolls Royce that William purchased for Heather as a gift for their special day, thus upholding a tradition that William’s father began on his own wedding day. The couple held their ceremony and reception on their contemporary, private estate at the base of Camelback Mountain. Guests were enveloped in a breathtaking view of the mountain’s form while the crooning sounds of Frank Sinatra played overhead. Jennie & Chris Irwin Married October 5, 2012 Passion is to kiss or to hug and to prove that
action speaks louder than words
Chris and Jennie’s paths first crossed when their boats sailed by one another on the lake. Their eyes locked, the couple shared a smile, and then Chris waved Jennie over to talk. “Before you know it we were laughing and dancing like we had known one another forever,” Jennie recalled. Before these two could exchange numbers, the waves of the lake knocked Chris into the water. Jennie, thinking they would never find one another again, posted a picture of them together on a social network site. Chris saw the picture online and jumped on the opportunity to meet with Jennie again. Jennie regularly met up with members of her bridal party at Jennie’s official wedding planning station- Las Casuela’s. By sharing much of the planning with their friends and family, Chris and Jennie had an easy and fun time creating their perfect day. DIY projects included cork place card holders, “hubbie” and “wifey” chair signs, and the bridesmaid’s pearl and rhinestone wine glasses.

With the support of their friends, family, and 20 members of their wedding party, Tara and Ryan were able to create a magical, memorable day. The men in the wedding party wore rolled-up sleeves and bow-ties. The women were encouraged to express their own personalities with their dresses and hair styles. While celebrating their anniversary in romantic Carmel, California, Andrew asked Michelle to become his wife. The two fell in love with the intimate and sophisticated atmosphere of the Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento. During the 16 months of planning, the bride’s mother was a great help to the busy couple. The wedding was peacock themed, incorporating teal and purple into the decorum. The bride’s garter, however, was orange and black. “I thought the guys would really fight over [a Giants colored

Krista and Brian never guessed that they would someday be wed when they first met as teens. Eight years later, after running into each other several times, Krista and Brian became good friends while reminiscing about their youth. But, it wasn’t until they both attended a mutual friend’s wedding that their romantic relationship began to bloom. “It’s all about timing! Everything seemed to just fall in to place and we both knew our relationship was meant to be,” Krista explained. Finally on New Year’s Eve, over a decade after the two first met, Brian proposed to Krista on the beautiful shores of Pismo Beach. At Woodbridge Country Club under a large oak tree, against a backdrop of the sun setting across the vineyards, Krista and Brian said shared their vows of love and devotion. The couple’s 13 month-old son was the charming ring bearer. The colors of the event were eggplant and lilac. In lieu of the traditional guest book, guest’s signed fabric pieces that would be later incorporated into a quilt. For favors, guests received personalized plantable seed card favors and miniature bottles of a custom cocktail with a picture of the happy couple alongside a note that read, “We took a SHOT at love!” Krista and Brian are happy that they were able to share their special day with those closest to them.

T he E volution
of
W edding E tiquette
After a 5-year hiatus, same-sex marriage resumes in California leaving many questions around modern etiquette for those preparing to wed, hundreds working in and around the wedding industry, and those with loved ones that may plan their own wedding soon. All wedding celebrations are based on the same principles: two people have made a commitment to one another, they want to express their love and devotion to each other, and they want to share that ceremony with their family and friends. With that in mind, here are a few tips for those BCM readers who are excitedly looking forward to a day that is long overdue.
Invitations
As ceremonies continue to evolve based on the desires of each unique couple, terminology on the invitation can be a point of uncertainty for many. To keep it simple, the invitation design should reflect the nature of the service and taste of the couple, and include the basics of who, what, when and where. When address the envelopes, modern etiquette now calls for couples’ names to appear on the same line. So whether the invited guests are married or not, their names can appear together above the address to which the invitation is being sent.
When addressing the envelope to a same-sex couple (or straight unmarried couples who live together), modern etiquette now calls for the couple’s names to appear on the same line.
Attire
As always, attire should express the tastes of the couple and reflect personal style. Attire should also fit the setting of the ceremony.
Guest Seating at the Ceremony
Because our society is now so connected, and thanks to Facebook we all know how many ‘mutual friends’ we have, seating at ceremonies has evolved from the typical “your side” and “my side.” Family members can be asked to act as ushers and seat people as they arrive according to the couple’s wishes. Another option is to create signage with quotes such as the one Carissa and Brittney England used for their
wedding. It read, “Today, two families become one. So please pick a seat, not a side.”
Terms of Endearment
As everything surrounding ceremonies evolves, so too will the traditional introductions of the couple at the end of the exchange. “Husband and Wife” may no longer fit for many reasons. Inviting the guests to congratulate the couple and their family following the exchange of vows would fit, and be appropriate for, many scenarios. Other than twisting the culture of what one may be use to it’s actually quite simple. The traditional “fiance” or “fiancee” during the engagement is practical. After the ceremony, many couples will introduce each other as a “spouse” or “life partner”. Regardless of which verbiage is used, the meaning is the same and easily understood by others.
Things You Wouldn’t Say At Any Wedding “Which one of you is the bride?”
celebrating with, each other. Skip this question and focus on celebrating with them.
At any wedding, it isn’t important to designate into which roles the couple is categorized. They are two people in love, exchanging vows and making a commitment.
“Why isn’t your family member here?”
“So, is this a real wedding?” One definition of wedding is “the act or an instance of blending or joining.” Whether you call it a “civil union” or a “commitment ceremony,” if you are in attendance as a real guest, with real people joining together in a real celebration of love, then yes, it is a real wedding.
“When are you going to have kids?” The couple on their special day is probably more interested in focusing on, and
M 94
A wedding is a time to celebrate and enjoy the company of those excited about, and willing to affirm, the couple’s relationship. Bringing up relatives who have chosen not to attend could be hurtful to the couple.
“Thank you for the invite… I’m so excited to make a political statement by attending.” If you are attending a celebration of love to make a political statement to your social circle, you are attending for the wrong reasons. Leave the politics out of it and reflect on the privilege of being invited to witness one of the most special days in your friends’ lives.
“I wonder who will walk down the aisle.” “Congratulations! I’m so supportive of your sexual preference.”
Every couple is different. Enjoy the element of surprise. You’ll see many variations on the processional as couples blend families and design their ceremony to reflect their union.
Read that statement one more time, and reflect on the absurdity. Congratulations to all BCM readers who have found that special someone to love and cherish. Best wishes for celebrations that reflect you and lives together that inspire you.
