Beach Proposal leads to Fall Wedding

Karla Gartner is Houston’s new Billboard Bride! You’ll see her beautiful smile on billboards all over the Houston area very soon.

-5-

-6-

After three and a half years of dating, Jared Miller gave Karla her birthday present, something every girl wants… a new set of break pads. However, the box did not contain clunky auto parts, inside were two tickets to a Royal Caribbean cruise (one in Jared’s name). The ship sailed through the beautiful Caribbean to Honduras. It happened during a private excursion, just the two of them on a Honduran beach with a backdrop of beautiful

blue water. “I was staring at a diamond ring and he was down on one knee,” says Karla. “With tearful eyes of joy I mumbled out yes and our forever story started.” Karla was eager to share this magical moment with family and friends; unfortunately, deserted Honduran beaches don’t have reliable cell service. When she finally reached an area where her phone picked up a tower, Jared convinced her to wait for one more surprise. “What other surprise

could follow such a perfect proposal?” she wondered. Jared pulled out his laptop and clicked on a “work” file. This file was actually a work of love. A video began with photos of them. Then her parents appeared congratulating them on their engagement. Soon her friends were sharing their excitement. “My fiancé loves me so much he asked all our closest family and friends to meet one night at my house and they each recorded a special message congratulating

us,” she recalls. “I now treasure this 18-minute-long video Jared created just for me.” Jared wanted her to feel the excitement from their friends and families while they were away at sea. Back in Houston, this Dobie High School and San Jacinto College graduate is now working around a busy nursing schedule to plan her dream wedding. Her sister married last November and Karla was with her every step of the way as maid of honor. Planning is going well. “It was suppose to

be more complicated, but after helping my sister last year, I just stepped into it,” says Karla. Things are getting done. Karla had a budget, location and look in mind for her venue. The Citadel near Reliant Stadium fit the bill perfectly. She loves the romantic feel, the shiny beautiful white marble floors and clean, transformable interior. Her desired colors and weather preferences call for a fall wedding. Her big day in October, 2019 will feature burgundy and blush color palettes, plentiful candles on the dramatic stairwells, and tall centerpieces to complement the tall ceilings. Her 250-person wedding reception will be preceded by a full Catholic mass at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church where five bridesmaids will be by her side. A nod to her Hispanic heritage, the Ceremony will include the presentation of the Lasso, Las Arras, a Bible and Rosary. All her girls were involved in picking the dress. “I really want the dress to be a surprise, so shopping was the one and only time the gown was seen.” Only her sister has a picture of her true wedding gown. The dress that she’ll wear on billboards is the perfect fitting Maggie Sottero from Ventura’s Bridal. “Venturas is very exciting,” says Karla. She took her mom and her sister with her to the fitting. When the perfect gown fit her body type it was an emotional experience. “You see yourself dressed up and you see yourself in jeans. But to see yourself as a bride for the first time is amazing.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Themes: Themes are so fun and everyone gets really excited. Even our older family members really enjoyed our Harry Potter theme. So bringing in a bit of personality is always fun for you and your guests. We had a super fun wand bar where guests could pick out their own wands!

Vendors Ventura’s Bridal Fashions Al’s Formal Wear Divisi Strings Reverent Films The Sweet Boutique

Bride’s Advice: First I would say plan out your budget with some room for growth. Guest counts can increase so it’s always good to plan for that. I would also recommend that you plan early. A big detail I would say you should never ever forget is to do a timeline with your vendors and check on it one week before the event so nothing is off time. Finally, it’s ok for things to change and you shouldn’t focus too much on it because at the end of the day you get to marry the love of your life.

REAL WEDDINGS

This couple met in High School in the south Texas town of McAllen. “I knew who Rene was because of mutual friends, but had never actually talked to him. I thought he was so handsome. I would always tell our mutual friends jokingly that he was my boyfriend. We dated his Junior year and my Senior year of High School.”

November 10th, 2018 Jana Cantua Photography

We planned this beautiful, small Mexican themed wedding in only two weeks. The actual plan had been to get married at the courthouse and invite our immediate family. Next thing we know, all of Rene’s family from Mexico City booked flights to McAllen. The invitation list kept expanding. My parents decided, “Let’s just invite the 80 people we were planning on having and do this thing!” So we did.

Yazmeen’s Advice: Every bride should hire a wedding planner. No matter how organized you or a family members may think they are, no bride or family member should run the show. Even if it is only a day-of coordinator, it relieves so much stress and allows the bridal couple to enjoy themselves on their special day.

Proposal Story: Thomas and I were in the process of building our first house together. Thomas had gone to the house earlier that day to set up pretty lights around the kitchen and fireplace. That evening we went to check on the progress as he kept asking, “Hey do you like the lights?” I hadn’t noticed the lights! REAL WEDDINGS

They met at Oklahoma State’s Camp Cowboy where they were both camp counselors. At Sarah’s very first camp, she met a boy named Reilee. Little did she know this meeting would change her life.

SARAH SAUER REILEE BERGER

May 27th, 2018

Villa Antonia, Austin, Texas

Their friendship blossomed. “One of my funniest memories of our budding relationship was a night when he asked if he could kiss me. I said no. Looking back now, it makes me laugh, but at the time I could tell he was mortified. Several months following, our friendship had grown stronger and I knew I had a crush on him. Knowing that he thought I had friend-zoned him after the whole kiss incident, I knew I would have to make the first move. On our Labor Day holiday, we went to see a drive in movie, and following, I proposed to him with a ring pop… to be my boyfriend of course.”

- 78 -

Sarah Libby Photography

Reilee’s proposal took place at a park. He hired a photographer who pretended to be taking pictures of her kids. “We set up the picnic, but instead of food I pulled a book out of the basket. I read a short story I had written for her, and at the end asked her to marry me and I pulled out the ring” says the groom. Of course she said yes, and that evening Sarah’s friends surprised her with an engagement party. “And if you all might be wondering, it wasn’t with a ring pop this time,” says Sarah happily.

Amber Kelley Photography

We were moving to Texas for Michael’s job and decided to drive a U-Haul from Boston. We made a few stops on our road trip, but I was most excited about our stop in Memphis. I have been an Elvis fan since I was a child and was so excited to visit Graceland. After our tour through the mansion, we gave our phone to a security guard to take our picture and Michael got down on one knee!

Bride’s Advice: Enjoy the process and don’t get caught up in the details. The most important person while planning my wedding (aside from my husband) was my wedding planner. She made sure that my vision came to life and that we enjoyed our day without worrying about what was going on behind the scenes. If you can’t afford a planner, or choose not to have one, be as organized as possible. Lastly, as fun as it is to plan with family and friends, the opinions can get overwhelming. Try to remember that this is your special day! Make final decisions with your partner after taking other people’s opinions into consideration.

REAL WEDDINGS

Proposal: I had planned for us to take couples pictures in December, but kept having to reschedule because of the rain. On December 13th, 2015, we decided to take our pictures inside at the Museum of Natural Science. My friend took pictures of us in the butterfly garden and captured the moment when I turned around to see Diego down on one knee. The best part of it was that he proposed to me with his grandmother’s diamond in a new setting, making it even more meaningful.

STEPHANIE BARKER DIEGO RUBALCAVA by Ainsley Mandell

How you met: We knew of each other in middle school and occasionally talked to each other in the hallway once we got to high school. We shared mutual friends but never truly had the opportunity to get to know each other until we both attended Stephen F. Austin after high school. We became close, but never treated each other as anything but friends until several people pointed out to us how compatible we were, and we finally realized that we liked each other. We had our first date during the summer of 2012 and began to fall in love.

- 94 -

Alexander Cross Photography

December 11th, 2016

Bride’s Advice: Wait to pick your bridesmaids. It’s worth the wait to see who truly cares about you and who is interested in helping you plan your wedding. Create a binder and stay organized with what has been completed and what still needs to be done. Leave space in your budget to go on your Honeymoon. Finally, I definitely suggest taking a premarital class. We took a class through our church and have a couple that mentors and helps us with the challenges married life brings.

Dream Photo & Video

We love walking our dogs, so one Wednesday in May we walked down to Silver Sycamore and he had the ring waiting for me by the lake. He got down on one knee and proposed. We were both so excited we can’t remember a thing either one said, which always makes us laugh!

AUBREY ERIN SPIGENER CHASE ALLEN HOFFMAN by Brogen Woodward

How We Met: My parents own a coffee shop called Sycamore Grounds, and I came to town to help with the opening. Chase was hired as a barista and throughout the summer we would occasionally chat. Then one day he asked my dad if he could take me on a date. We decided to be friends since I was attending Baylor. A year later we met back at the coffee shop, went to a New Year’s Eve party together, and have been inseparable ever since.

- 98 -

September 23th, 2017

Venue Choice: My parents built and own Silver Sycamore and because of them I met my husband. It was a no brainer to choose the place we first met!

Bride’s Advice: Do not stress, you will not even notice if one centerpiece is off or if someone didn’t sit in the right place. The day goes by so quickly, so slow down and take the time to soak it all in and be happy!

Unique Details: We had a mix of English and Spanish speakers at our wedding so our first dance was a Bachata song that has both languages in it. PRISCILLA PEQUEĂ‘O JUSTIN MOLINA

June 25th, 2015 Maribel Gardea Designs by Creo

by Stephanie DiCiro Priscilla and Justin got married on a Thursday at St. Leo, the Great Catholic Church in San Antonio. Priscilla walked down the aisle with a gorgeous ivory chiffon A-line dress with a sweetheart neckline that was purchased from David’s Bridal. The cocktail hour and reception were held at The Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio. The Sheraton stood out to Priscilla and Justin for its character and historical charm that was evident throughout the hotel. There was also an

- 106 -

incredible terrace that provided a beautiful view from Houston Street and the Crystal Ballroom. This added the perfect amount of elegance to the wedding. The Crystal Ballroom had eye-catching chandeliers that were a luxurious touch for the reception. There were stunning centerpieces that were a unique combination of hurricane vases and votives with candles. These were complimented by incredible floral arrangements from HEB Weddings by Design.

Bride’s Advice: My advice would be to shop around. We must have seen almost ten different venues, five different bakeries, and five different florists. We had an idea of what we wanted and what our budget was and we stuck to it. Each vendor we met with, we ranked on a scale from 1-10 and considered what he or she offered, [their] price, etc. We were able to narrow it down quickly and chose the vendors that we did. We were extremely satisfied with the quality and service we received with each and every one of [the vendors we chose] and they all contributed to making our big day that much more special. So, take the time to shop around and stick to your budget!

your Core in Treat your gals to a wellness retreat at The Resort at Pedregal

Get wedding ready by participating in the wellness retreat, a multi-day fitness experience led by Elite Fitness. The staff at Elite fitness understands most of Pedregal’s guests have access to the best gyms, trainers, and chefs as part of their daily lives, so they created an out of the ordinary fitness experience to impress the most discerning participants. It starts when Naturopath Dr. Wendy comes to your room to conduct a private BioFeedback Body Scan. She connects wrists, ankles and head to a computer, it feels kind of like having your

blood pressure taken. During the process she asks about lifestyle, heath goals, and diet. She compares body scan results with your goals, identifies deficiencies and offers solid steps for improvement. Her message may be to reduce toxins interfering with the brain and daily functions of vital organs, start intermittent fasting or make new/better dietary choices. Once a baseline and goals are set, it’s time to select activities.

BEACH BOOT CAMP Wake up early and Elite Fitness will push you beyond your normal workout by combining cardio, weight training, cross training, and more. Although it’s beautiful, the coarse Cabo sand makes easy squats become wobbly, cumbersome and

challenging. Throughout the weights, squats and high and low impact exercises, fellow participants motivate and cheer on the group. It’s a team project nobody quits. If the pain starts to win focus on the ocean and your new friends.

FARM TO TABLE Visit a nearby farm where locals and Ex-Pats grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. Enjoy a tour of the gardens, yoga on the farm and a farm to table meal.

STRETCH AND BREATHE The group stretch and breathe workshop focuses on Foundational breathing. (Breath work is beneficial for men too!)

The goal is to open up the chest and back to combat the effects of constant laptop and smart phone usage. A beautiful hike follows with gorgeous views of the Baja. Discover the gravesites of the original family as well as the remains of their first home. Along the way small changes will be discussed: quinoa instead of pasta, chipotle instead of sauce, and steeping your own tea. The recommended dessert is particularly noteworthy --healthy ice cream.

YOGA Sunrise and sunset deserve their own salutations, yogi style. Join the Elite Fitness crew on a luxury yacht at the nearby Marina Cabo San Lucas. Your yoga practice commences just as the boat sails past the famous Cabo Arch at Pelicano beach. The onboard workout is a combination of yoga, mat Pilates and sculpting. This combination workout offers the best of both worlds and is great for people on

The waves waft off the day’s workout allowing time to consider small lifestyle changes.

Locals keep this area secret. I’ve been traveling, skiing and staying in the finest accommodations around the Salt Lake City area for over 25 years. Yet, I’ve only recently heard of Alta. The best-kept secret of Utah skiing is the talk of the town since the 50 million dollar renovation of Snowpine Lodge, an original lodge built right in the mountain.

O

nly 25 minutes from the Salt Lake City airport, you can literally be skiing 70 minutes after landing. It’s an easy drive; shuttles are plentiful and reliable. The new Snowpine is a quaint mountain lodge with a whole new look. Grays and browns accent western artwork throughout the resort. The small, inviting lobby has a pleasant fireplace open on two sides, heating two cozy seating areas. A large inviting patio provides additional seating when the weather permits, perfect for sipping hot cocoa, cocktails or coffee as skiers zip by. Similar lobbies are found on most floors.

New lodge ups luxury ante in Alta

The lodge is family owned and built for families. Board games litter the lobby and a kid’s zone is set up on level C with video and table games, plus toys for every age. There is even a bunny slope with its own chair lift so kids can ski without leaving the hotel property. Snowpine is located on the mountain so guests enjoy skiin-ski-out convenience. It’s a two-minute ski to the Albion basin, home to ski school, daycare, dining and two lifts. Despite our crowded Saturday in February, the kids signed up for ski school in no time! Alf

The Texas hill country ambiance is breathtaking. Along the leisurely walk to the rooms is the Body Mindfulness Center, Yoga Barn, Life in

Texas line dancing, salsa, morning stretch, body & barre happen often. You can dig a little deeper with classes in the power of intuition, chakras and the elements or astrology. The gym, with its shiny new exercise equipment, is part of the Body Mindfulness Center. The yoga barn is a spectacularly Zen building boasting high ceilings. Natural light

Trust and respect are time-honored traditions at Vista Verde Ranch. his magical place is in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The all-inclusive, family-owned, luxury dude ranch caters to the adventurous with mountain activities winter and summer. Adventures at Vista Verde Ranch start with luxury lodging. Think high-end cowboy-chic: rooms and cabins have vintage western chairs and tables, beds constructed of rustic pine logs, topped with cozy mattresses and comfy linens. But you will want to get out of bed at some point; all honeymooners have private Jacuzzis with stunning mountain views.

Guests select their own activities, one morning and one afternoon, from a preplanned list. Each evening at dinner, a friendly staffer asks, “What would you like to do tomorrow?” When you wake up, your excursions are set up and ready. It’s that easy!

Our visit was in winter. We started with a trail ride around the 587-acre ranch. Astride a trusty steed, we plod through a blanket of snow as we take in the mountain views and learn the history of the ranch. Every now and then a few new fresh flakes fall and enhance

the ambiance. Our afternoon activity is on a frozen lake inside a heated tent. Using an auger, we bore holes through the ice in and around our tent and have fishing lines baited with worms and lures dropped through the holes. The fishing rods are designed to set the hooks automatically when a fish nibbles, so we concentrate on warm beverages and socializing until a rod springs up; then reel in our catch, which includes rainbow and lake trout. Every excursion comes to an end, as we pack up our fishing camp a bald eagle flies down lands on the ice. God Bless America. Snowshoeing is like hiking in the snow. morning we set out into nature for spectacular views of Mount Zirkel and the Elk River Valley. We track a moose who came down from the mountains to nibble on willows. As we duck walk through the snow (proper snowshoe technique) we learn about the Utes. Historians widely agree they are the longest continuous residents of Colorado. Steamboat Springs is near the northern edge of the Ute territory, which stretched from what is now northern New Mexico up to the Green

River area of Wyoming. The Ute believed the Aspen trees have eyes, the eyes of their ancestors. Looking at the black marks as we hike through an Aspen colony, we see eyes too. We spend the afternoon snow tubing. The hill is on property and reserved for Vista Verde Ranch guests- no crowds, no lines, no hassles. This experience is pure fun; slide/bounce your way down and ride a snowmobile back to the top of the hill. Repeat.

The ranch is known for programs and clinics on horse training and care. The horse barn is state of the art. Classes include working ranch horse clinic, intro to horsemanship,

A stay at Vista Verde Ranch is a luxurious step back in time. Make your honeymoon what you want it to be. Go crazy with active adventures, relax in the luxurious rooms or Jacuzzis, experience the educational programs or work with the livestock; or do all of the above. Either way, you’ll meet new friends and have an unforgettable honeymoon experience. www.VistaVerdeRanch.com

SUSTAINABLE FARMING A marriage remains viable through love, compassion, and shared joy. But even true love has seasons. So too is it true for the

earth and her production. Eating seasonally allows for supportable pastoralism, and Front Porch Farms, a working farm and event venue practices this sustainable edict.

Cowgirl Creamery’s “how cheese is made” tour, is a stop worth making in the quaint town of Point Reyes Station, CA. Co-founder Sue Conley was inspired to build the business back in 1997, when she met Ellen Strauss, matriarch of the Straus Family Creamery. The Straus family is famous for their development of organic dairy techniques, which has evolved since the seventies. Due to the Straus’s efforts, nearly 90% of the dairy farms in Marin and Sonoma Counties in Northern California are certified organic today.

TRUE LOVE Stays Vulnerable HOW TO KEEP AN OPEN HEART? VOW TO LISTEN. BY SONDRA SNEED TRUE LOVE EXPERT & SPIRITUAL ADVISOR

Sondra Sneed is an author & psychic-soul reader. Her upcoming book Love’s Highway is a conversation with God about love and relationships.

W

e all have emotional wounds from childhood. They come from an open heart that gets shut down when our feelings are hurt.

Kindness toward one another in adult relationships means paying attention to outbursts of emotion. Because an

inflamed temper indicates a pattern of grievances that came long before the arguments in a relationship. If you can hold your tongue and listen, first, you’ll go far to help each other mend and forget old emotional scars.

The soul records and holds onto broken-hearted programs until they are reprogrammed with new, healing experiences. These unconscious, damaged thought systems originate from a loss of control. Unable to manage our own lives as children, frustration set-in early when we had no power of our own. So, as a matter of pure habit, we’ve learned to govern ourselves by manipulating others for two reasons. We either wish to avoid further emotional injury, or we want something that we think won’t be given. Here’s the problem. Manipulation doesn’t work in adult, committed

Open Heart:

relationships, at least not without damaging vulnerability, because the heart shuts down when it senses manipulation. As adults, we have a responsibility to find agreement. No longer children without control over our situation, our beloved is also not a parent over us. Compromise then is the only way for true love to stay vulnerable and open.

Open the Heart and Listen Give only what is yours, preserve what is theirs. Don’t try to take from your mate what’s not yours to take. Kindness requires you ask with respect, for more time, more consideration, etc. Making demands never gets anyone anywhere. Never take pain for granted. If you’re in an argument, it’s pretty telling. It says you’re not being heard. But it also means they aren’t being heard by you, either. Learn to keep what your mate is saying not as the reason they can’t agree, but as a reason for you to identify what they need.

Never think your pain is important to someone who is hurting. The key to finding out what’s wrong is to notice what’s being held on to. For some people, it’s just the fear they won’t get what they want that motivates a need to be right. Acknowledging what they need instead, without giving up what you need, will provide a great deal more breathing room, and may even end the argument immediately. In a closed heart, love is conditional. It requires that all needs are met before love is given. It requires everyone do what is desired before it will love. It requires that everything is settled before it is warm.

As adults, we have a responsibility to find agreement. No longer children without control over our situation, our beloved is also not a parent over us.

An open heart does not need someone to say words in a particular way to be what it is, because it knows what it is, with or without those words. An open heart takes only what it needs, to be reminded of love, and nothing more. For example, when your beloved asks you to do something you’d rather not do, don’t explode or implode, simply say what you don’t want to do. Be firm, kind, and gracious about it. Make sure you know yourself enough to know this is what you prefer, not as a matter of disagreement but as a matter of preference. Eventually he or she will find someone else to do that thing with, or drop it all together. In a heart that is untrue, being right is more important than the health of the heart. A strong heart will not allow the words of a closed heart to remind what is untrue. A strong heart feels the feelings of another and chooses compromise over being right.

A childish heart has to be right and has to have the attention of the other on their being right. True love vows to meet needs with at least sympathy. Especially one’s own needs. Marriage is an experiment in monogamy. It is a land of making peace with the fact you are two, unique individuals. Your words are symbols of what’s needed, and not to be used as projectiles from old wounds. Learn to be fair with each other by staying vulnerable and open-hearted. Remember, before engaging the mouth, listen. Finding agreement is not always easy, but so much more fun than closed-hearted defense and disagreement. Love matures as the mind finds ways to make arguments a thing of the past, and compromise a way to be present and open.
