plan!

It’s time to Congratulations on this exciting time in your life. It’s time to focus. The Bridal Extravaganza Show can help. Narrow down your options. Make decisions. Book your vendors! As your big day approaches, get the major items out of the way first. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most brides focus on the wedding location. Once you’ve secured a date, the rest of the items will fall into place. Next, dive into the enhancements that will make your day creative and memorable. You may experience some stressful days and sleepless nights as you plan your big day, but remember, it’s all about you: the engaged couple.

On the following pages you will meet Texas brides, just like you. You’ll also meet the vendors who bring their dreams to life. Look for advice from brides and learn from their mistakes; be inspired by their creativity, then push the envelope to make your dreams come true. As you navigate the sea of big day decisions and engagement hurdles, always come back to the center of why you said yes in the first place. We wish you love and happiness, Laurette Veres

Love

at the Dance Hall

Kelly and Dylan met at a dance hall in Victoria, Texas and kept in touch on social media for a several years. Five years later, Kelly, a Marketing Manager for a civil engineering firm, moved to Houston. Dylan, the owner of a marketing and graphic design firm, invited her to brunch. They have been a couple since the day he showed her around Houston.

Kelly’s Advice

Try to find a friend, family member, or hire someone for DAY OF coordination – the girls I had saved my sanity!

- 52 -

Dylan popped the question at his family reunion where he proposed at his favorite spot — under a huge, 100+ year-old oak tree on his greatgrandfather’s farm. The ceremony took place at Annunciation Catholic Church in Downtown Houston. “We loved the history of the church and location,” Kelly said. The reception was held at the Heights Villa— a venue that was conveniently located and very beautiful.

- 53 -

The bride wore a Sophia Tolli gown from Ventura’s Bridal Fashions. The cake was from “Who Made the Cake!” During the reception, Dylan surprised the guests by performing a song he had written about the couple’s first date. The crowd was wowed with a performance by Dylan’s friend, John Evans, of the John Evans Band. The couple honeymooned at Excellence El Carmen, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. - Laurette Veres

The Wooden Box

Kaylee and Josh met at Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas. On their one-year anniversary, Kaylee gave Josh a wooden box with mementos from their relationship. On the night of August 16th, Josh had written down several different date ideas and put them in a hat to be pulled out. Kaylee pulled out the second date idea and Josh took her to the Monterey

Church Garden where he led her (eyes closed) to the gazebo. Once she sat down, she opened her eyes to see the wooden box she had given him for their one-year anniversary with a ring inside. Later that night, at his parents’ house, the whole family came out to celebrate with them. Kaylee and Josh were married at the beautiful Willow Creek Wedding Venue in Waxahachie, Texas. Kaylee wore a Maggie Sottero Ivory over Ivory lace gown from Lulu’s Bridal Salon. A Slice of Life made the threetier, gold polka dot cake. Along with cake, guests enjoyed some of the family’s favorite desserts such as blueberry banana pie, Mama Hind’s Thumbprint cookies and “Nana’s Kisses” (jam sandwiched in between two cookies). The night ended with guests waving red, white, and blue wand streamers before the couple went off to St. Lucia for their honeymoon.

Kaylee’s Advice:

First, really consider a First Look. I was super traditional going into the planning, but once I stepped back and looked at things practically, I realized that it would make the day way less stressful. It was also such a sweet moment for Josh and I to connect because it was just his eyes on me, not 200 others. Second, remember your goal. It (should not be) to have the perfect wedding, it is to get married and strive for the most fulfilling marriage. Don’t lose sight of the goal in mind; it will make your big day a happy day!

— Marian Jacob

Third, consider waiting a day to go on your honeymoon! Josh and I waited one day before flying out because it was cheaper. The day after our wedding it was so nice to just be able to relax and not wake up at the crack of dawn! We did some local things and got to rest before we headed off to St. Lucia for some fun!

Last, smile and remember to be kind to yourself. The world puts enough pressure on brides…you don’t need to add your own.

REAL WEDDINGS

JOHN KWIATKOWSKI MATTHEW MCDOUGALL

Thomas G. Campbell

&

October 25,2015

Showers of Love

John, a bookseller and event coordinator, met Matt, a high school history teacher, at Rich’s, a popular Houston dance club, in 2002. Matt, who lived in College Station, had driven in to Houston with a college friend to go to his first gay bar. As fate would have it, this would be the night he met his soul mate. John, who lived in Houston, didn’t intend on going out that night. He planned a movie night with friends, but instead an old friend called up, plans changed and and out they went! John and Matt met on the dance floor that night and hit it off right away. Before they knew it, it was 2 am and the group ended up at another late-night Houston favorite, House of Pies. John and Matt starting seeing each steadily and for the next 2 years, they drove back and forth between Houston and College Station every weekend. When Matt graduated from Texas A&M, he moved to Houston right away to be with John. On the day Matt planned to pop the question he was glued to the Supreme Courts’ Blog waiting for the announcement of the Obergefell v. Hodges, same-sex marriage decision. When he heard the good news, he immediately grabbed John’s ring off of the kitchen counter, raced downstairs, and tearfully popped the question to his stunned but ecstatic partner. What perfect timing for the two to become engaged! Joyous and looking toward their future together, they began planning their special day. They had a date in mind but it was only 3 months away! Soon their joy was turned to anxiousness, when they began to search for a wedding venue on such short notice.

Finally, the couple decided on Station 3, a historically renovated and repurposed fire station in the Houston Heights area. The rustic exposed brick décor and fantastic staff were just what Matt and John were looking for. BONUS: Sliding down the fireman’s pole into their wedding party, “was the perfect entrance to start the dancing portion of the evening” said Matt.

The couple planned their wedding to be held on October 25th, 2015, the thirteenth anniversary of the day they met. The arrangements were all set and then it happened…the night before their big day they ran in to the worst wedding crasher of all, Hurricane Patricia. The storm was wreaking havoc in Houston and particularly in the Heights due to the unpredictable White Oak Bayou. Throughout the night they heard from many of their guests who could not fly in to Houston to attend due to the weather and the venue almost cancelled the wedding all together! Luckily, many of their loved ones and friends and the wedding officiate were all able to make it as scheduled and the wedding took place as planned. Matt wore a charcoal suit from Men’s Wearhouse and John wore a dark grey suit from Jos. A. Bank. The wedding cake was a small 2-tier cake from SWEET Bakery and for their guests; luscious chocolate and salted caramel cupcakes were served. The wedding cake was uniquely appointed with two custom made wedding toppers, cute Funko Pop figurines that looked like Matt and John. The tables featured travel-photo themed suitcase centerpieces. Each one filled with fun photos

from one of their hometowns or a city they had visited. After 13 years together, they had travelled frequently with friends, and there were thousands of photos taken in a variety of places, many of them included the very people in attendance that night! In fact, each suitcase was designed to include photos of Matt and John with the guests seated at that particular table on their various different adventures. Despite all the turmoil the day before, the day turned out lovely, but exceptionally wet. Since, the couple had to wait so many years to get hitched, they took two honeymoons. After four fun days at Disney World, the official honeymoon trip was to Italy, where they explored the beautiful sites of Rome, Florence, and Venice. - Jade Lewis

John’s Advice:

Google Docs! Setting up a joint email address with Google allowed both of us to access vendor emails on our phones. We also used Google’s online apps to create a spreadsheet to track expenses (and paying everything off ). There were lists of questions to ask vendors, lists of people we invited, as well as their RSVPs and any gifts received. Having this all on Google Docs helped both of us stay on the same page. When both people in the couple are handling different aspects of the wedding, having one central place to keep all the relevant information was a godsend. John could update the budget at work while Matt was getting info from the coordinator. Another tip is not to get too bogged down in tradition. The wedding should reflect who you are as a couple. If there’s something you don’t feel strongly about, don’t do it. We went simple on the cake and flowers so we could spend extra money on the photographer and venue— two things we had really strong feelings about.

REAL WEDDINGS

A Rivalry Turned Romance

Holly, an engineering technician and avid Texas A&M Aggies football fan, met Taylor, a petroleum geologist and Texas Longhorns fan, at the office. One night, they were out with a mutual friend who had to leave early, leaving them alone to begin a friendship that would eventually become something much more.

Holly’s Advice:

My best advice for any bride is to take the time to enjoy planning your wedding. Whether it’s a backyard barbecue, elopement at the courthouse, or formal affair with 250+ guests; enjoy the little things. Don’t let the stress of having a “perfect wedding” turn what should be enjoyable into a chore. Have fun shopping for that perfect (and comfortable!) pair of shoes, or crafting with your girlfriends. Whatever it is, don’t forget that this is supposed to be a joyful time in your life. So don’t worry too much about which shade of ivory napkins go best with the pearl tablecloths. Things are going to go wrong, but the only thing people remember is how happy and in love you and your fiancé are.

One weekend, Taylor found out Holly had been planning a surprise trip to Playa Del Mexico for his birthday— so he decided to plan a surprise of his own. On the last night of their trip, as the sun was setting, they were walking on the beach and Taylor knelt on one knee and proposed.

On July 3rd, 2016, the couple married at The Crystal Ballroom at The Rice, in Houston. Holly wore a beautiful wedding gown with a diamond waistline by Anna Maier Couture. The 4-tier wedding cake was from Edible Designs by Jessie, with floral accents by Gypsy Blooms.

Although the couple did not include traditions from their alma maters, she surprised him with a Longhorns-themed groom’s cake and later on that night Taylor surprised her with the “Aggie War Hymn.” The couple honeymooned in Anguilla, Caribbean Island. - Marian Jacob

REAL WEDDINGS

An Everlasting Love

Zachary and Jennifer met in Houston through a group of mutual friends. They didn’t see each for quite some time but then suddenly they began running into each other everywhere around town. It wasn’t too long until their connection grew stronger and they wanted to spend more and more time together. Scheduling became an issue when Zachary moved to Denver for work while Jennifer was still living in Houston.

& - 74 -

When Jennifer visited for the holidays, Zachary had his mind made up that he didn’t want to spend any more time apart, so he popped the question!

When it came time to plan the wedding, Jennifer fell back on a favorite. She had always loved the rustic elegance of the original location of Masraff ’s in Houston, Texas. Although the Masraff family had moved the original restaurant to another location, they opened a beautiful new event space called The Wynden in its place. The new space offers ample indoor seating and still features an amazing private courtyard with romantic, sparkling string lights dangling from above. The couple thought it was the perfect choice for the indoor reception and outdoor ceremony they had in mind.

Bride’s Advice:

Don’t stress the small details. On your wedding day, no one will know [about the details]. And take it all in, because the night goes by too quickly! Also, spend your money where everyone will get the most enjoyment. For example: food, music, and the bar. Do your due diligence before bookings vendors – if it’s too good to be true, it most likely is. Hire a day-of coordinator (a good one)!

Jennifer chose an exquisite gown from Brickhouse Bridal. It flowed elegantly around her as she walked down the aisle. For the reception, the celebrated pastry team at Alphorn Bakery designed a remarkable cake with

eye-catching floral arrangements placed around the edges for pops of color. The couple decided to challenge their guests to let loose by hosting a Hora Loca, or “Crazy Hour,” complete with a Columbian dance troupe to entertain and Samba dancers to get the crowd into the groove.

When the fun was over, Jennifer and Zachary spent their honeymoon in the Caribbean on the breathtaking island of St. Maarten. — Stephanie DiCiro

Love on the Jetty

Krystal, now a physical therapist, met Ryan, now an insurance agent, while they were working at Chick-fil-A. She caught his eye at 6 A.M. on his first day. April 23, 2016

Rosy Gaytan with Alba Rose Photography

Jack was a pilot for Hawaiian Airlines when he caught a glimpse of the most gorgeous girl he had ever seen, Effie. She was a Food and Beverage server for the Four Seasons Hualalai. He asked her out several times with no luck. However, his persistence finally paid off when she agreed to go on a date. Their first date was unforgettable. They started with a sunset sail in the waters off of Waikiki Beach and then they had a gorgeous oceanfront restaurant dinner. Finally, they ended the night with a stroll along the beach under the stars, where they had their first kiss.

Fast forward to the night of the proposal. Jack surprised Effie with a night in Waikiki at the same oceanfront restaurant where they had their first date. Jack even wore the exact same button down blue shirt that he wore on their first date. They ended the night in the exact spot where their first kiss was a year and a half ago and this was where Jack dropped to one knee and asked her to spend their lives together! Family traditions and holidays have always been close to the couple’s hearts and choosing their wedding location was easy for them. They tied the knot at Effie’s grandparents’ farm, 4K Ranch, in Edgewood, Texas. The farm was filled with the beautiful lush blooms of spring. The ceremony was held in front of the grandparents’ house and the reception was just a short stroll (or hayride) away, on another part of the farm.

Effie wore an exquisite Patience gown by Maggie Sottero. Effie’s hair and makeup was gorgeously styled by Janet Thai with Rose Gold Bridal Beauty. The delicious cake was created by Sweet Bee Bakery in Arlington, Texas. Effie’s mother hand-dyed stunning purple doilies for the guests’ place settings. They also had eco-friendly palm leaf plates and bamboo utensils that added to the rustic, chic theme. All of the DIY floral arrangements and bouquets matched the theme elegantly. They took a Celebrity Cruise and had multiple stops along the way making for a breathtaking experience! - Stephanie DiCiro

Bride’s Advice:

The festivities go by extremely fast! Make a conscious effort to take a moment, with EVERY change of scenery throughout the week or weekend and especially the day of. Stand back, soak-in, and admire your surroundings and loved-ones.

Once Upon a Time

KRISTINE MULLINS ADAM RIGGS

& - 90 -

February 13, 2016

Scott Kelley Photography

Kristine and Adam, two sales reps, met each other at their company’s boat party and hit it off instantly. One weekend, in June 2015, the couple took a carriage ride in San Antonio where Adam asked Kristine to hold her hands out and close her eyes.

He then placed a plastic Cinderella watch in her hand. She sat there, confused, until the end of the ride. He had her pull the pin out of the watch to stop the time. After asking her to close her eyes once again, she opened them to find him on one knee. Adam wanted her to stop the time so that she would remember the exact moment when he proposed. On their wedding day, Kristine wore a classy Vera Wang dress from David’s Bridal as she walked down the aisle at the Prince of Peace Church in Houston, Texas. The reception was held at The Gallery, in Houston. Edible Designs by Jessie made the wedding cake with amaretto and raspberry cream cheese filling, along with the groom’s cake, which was a German chocolate cake in the shape of an Aggie ring— a symbol of Texas A&M. The night ended with sparklers in hand as guests led them out to their Rolls Royce. Kristine and Adam honeymooned in Hawaii.

Kristine’s Advice:

I definitely recommend at least having a day-of coordinator. She was awesome with everything on the wedding day. I never had to think about the timeline. She would come and ask me when or if I wanted to move on to the next thing. All I had to do was enjoy and try to soak in all the excitement of the night! She also made sure Adam (my husband) and I always had a drink in our hand. I would also recommend either doing a little research before the bridal show or have a preferred vendor list from your venue to take to the bridal show. That way, you have a little idea of what you want to get accomplished and who you want to meet because it can be a little overwhelming with the amount of vendors that are present.

Love at First Bite! Work is a big part of anyone’s life, but meeting your true love there is just the cherry on top! The Stephens’ family lake house was a place very close to Scott’s heart and he knew this was where he wanted to ask his best friend to marry him. He proposed at Look Out Point in Possum Kingdom Lake and when he got down on one knee, she of course said “yes!” The celebration overlooked the sunset over the gorgeous lake. Family and friends swarmed in with champagne after the proposal and they all had a special dinner together to share the great news. Scott had visited Hotel Del Coronado on a previous trip and, when Natalie was shown the venue, she fell in love with the building, its history, and its gorgeous beaches. They both knew this was the perfect place to tie the knot.

The wedding took place outside the hotel with exquisite greenery and floral arrangements framing

the aisle. Standing under the eye-catching floral archway was so picturesque and unforgettable; the couple knew this was the spot where they needed to get married. White rose petals were elegantly arranged in a design leading to the altar. Natalie walked down the aisle in a stunning Oscar De La Renta gown.

Bride’s Advice:

First and foremost: hire a professional wedding planner to help you! It saved us so much stress— especially since we had a destination wedding. All of our guests, including us and our family, are from Texas, so it was so important that we had our wedding planner Wynn Austin to walk us through every step.

Natalie’s dream, ever since she was little, was to have fireworks at the wedding and Hotel Del Coronado didn’t disappoint. They arranged fireworks to display on the beach after the ceremony. After Scott and Natalie tied the knot, they escaped to Bali to explore the breath-taking beaches. - Stephanie DiCiro

REAL WEDDINGS

Quintessential Love Maggie and TJ, both Houstonians, met through mutual friends during their college years in Los Angeles. They began dating soon after. One night, while they were watching the sun set in Cabo San Lucas, with their favorite band playing in the background, TJ got down on one knee and asked Maggie to marry him. Maggie and TJ were married at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara, California. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Bacara Resort & Spa — a quintessential wedding venue with Spanish architecture and a beautiful

ocean view. Maggie wore a bejeweled lace Madonna gown by Galia Lahav. The three-tier, Signature Princess cake with boysenberry and Kahlua was made by the resort’s pastry chef, Brooke Martin. During the reception, TJ joined the band on stage and played a song on his bass guitar. Although the couple is not Jewish, some friends insisted on them doing the Hora dance to “Hava Nagila.” Part of the tradition requires that the couple be hoisted in chairs above the crowd.

Maggie’s Advice:

Over-communicate with all your guests and bridal party. Don’t assume that because the information is on your invitation and wedding website that everyone knows where to be and what to do at what time. People need reminder emails, texts, and calls. Weeks leading up to the wedding (and even hours before the ceremony began), we were still answering our guests’ questions about what time things started, how to book hotel rooms, and what to wear.

However, I really want to note that wedding planning should be fun! Throughout the planning process, my husband was so sweet and would regularly check in with me and ask how I was feeling and whether I was enjoying the planning. The answer was always “yes.” I recommend doing regular check-ins with each other, and if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, maybe your planning should go a different direction. Enjoy the time that you get to celebrate with your fiancé, closest friends, and family because it will be over before you know it.

REAL WEDDINGS

Love Rekindled

Nicole, a teacher, and Collin, a nurse, started dating after they met through mutual friends. Eventually, life took them their separate ways. Several years later, they reconnected and rekindled the friendship they once had. One night, on their way back from dinner, Collin took a slight detour to Nicole’s favorite spot on a hilltop. As they sat down on the quilt

Nicole’s Advice:

Use a wedding coordinator or make sure the venue has one, so you don’t have to worry about the timing and flow of events at the reception! At the end of the day, you are married and that’s all that truly matters.

decorated with lights, he asked her to marry him.

Nicole and Collin were married at the Marty Leonard Chapel in Fort Worth, Texas. They had their reception at the beautiful 809 at Vickery in the historic district. Nicole wore a long, lace La Sposa gown by Lewisville Bridal Boutique. Some of the bride and groom’s family members weren’t able to attend. In honor of those that couldn’t be there, empty seats were reserved during the ceremony. At the reception, guests were able to customize popcorn, from sweet to savory, at a popcorn bar and enjoy popsicles from Steele City Pops. Guests were also treated to games such as Cornhole and life size Jenga. The 4-tier wedding cake with C-topper and Groom’s 2–tier stethoscope

cake with chocolate covered strawberries were both made by Creative Cakes by Monica. At the end of the night, the guests sent off the bride and groom with sparklers before they were whisked off to their honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. - Marian Jacob

ASHLEY MARIE SIMIEN TREY MAYS

Making Memories of Us

Ashley was introduced to Trey by a mutual friend one evening at The Pastry War, a mezcaleria in Houston, Texas. Throughout that first night, they shared their fondness for chocolate chip cookies, a good game of pool, and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”. The chemistry that sparked between them that night would bring about many nights full of love, laughter, and happily ever after. One December day, Trey had strategically planned out the entire afternoon and evening full of surprises for Ashley! First, they would attend the Nutcracker ballet and then to America’s Latin American restaurant for an incredible dinner. They had also received an invite to Trey’s company Christmas party for that night and they had planned on going for weeks; however, Trey had something else up his sleeve for the evening. When they

Ashley’s Advice:

I know it is easier said than done, but try to stay calm and give someone else the stress to handle. One of the best pieces of advice my college roommate/ bridesmaid gave me was, “At the end of the day, it is about you and your husband.” No need to stress on who can’t attend, what type of flowers you have, or even the type of paper you use for the programs, at the end of the day, it really is about you and your husband celebrating unity and marriage. The details do matter, but they aren’t a life changing decision.

arrived at the hotel for the party, they went upstairs to visit some coworkers before heading back downstairs to the party. When they knocked on what Ashley thought was a coworker’s hotel room, she was surprised to walk into a beautifully decorated room complete with a romantic slideshow recounting their relationship. The room was scattered with rose petals and glistening with candlelight. There was an adorable portrait of the two of them and a

I will say, start planning early!! Venue, caterer, dress and colors would be the first things I would say to cross off your checklist. Having Rina as our wedding coordinator (3L Entertainment & Events) made the entire process fun, blissful and stress free! Also, as soon as you start receiving gifts, cards, etc. start a gift list and write down who, what, and their address! It will help tremendously when you and your husband start writing Thank You Notes. There are so many tips I could give, but above all I would HIGHLY suggest that you and your husband set aside two dinner plates on a small romantic table in a separate room from any guests so that you can dine and enjoy each other for even just 10 minutes. Spending just a few minutes by yourselves as newlyweds before the reception begins will not only give you a chance to embrace your first moments as husband and wife, but it will also give you a chance to eat! Trust me, you will be so happy that you did!

beautiful shadowbox of memories arranged on the table along with other endearing signs of love and faith placed around the room. Before she knew what was happening, Trey got down on one knee and asked to spend the rest of forever with Ashley. She, of course, said yes but the surprises weren’t over yet! When they walked into the party downstairs, she was overwhelmed to find their closest friends and family waiting to share a champagne toast. The best part was, there was never any Christmas party at all! The whole day had led up to that one special moment! Ashley and Trey tied the knot at The Springs in Angleton, Texas in the elegant Magnolia Manor. The couple fell in love with the plantation style of The Manor; the gorgeous wrap-around

balcony, classy chandeliers, and spectacular entrance lined with grand columns. Ashley already had the perfect dress for the ceremony! Her parents had once purchased an astonishingly beautiful white beaded gown

- 108 -

for her to wear in the Miss Texas pageant. Fast forward to five years later, Ashley met with a seamstress to make a few changes so she could refresh the dress. Her vision was to make over the dress to better fit the occasion and the person she is today, while still being able to cherish the old memories it held for her. She looked radiant as she walked down the aisle. Also, Trey and Ashley incorporated their individual cultural and religious traditions into their ceremony, creating a very unique and intimate experience that their guests are sure to remember for years to come. To top it all off,

Gladis Cakes created a delicious 4-tier wedding cake that was a little bit of heaven for the guests to enjoy!

For their honeymoon, Trey surprised Ashley with a romantic escape to St. Lucia. This tropical island, surrounded by gorgeous waters filled with coral reefs and laced with trails leading to pristine waterfalls offered an unforgettable experience. These two newlyweds checked multiple things off their bucket lists, including a helicopter ride to the resort overlooking the beautiful island and zip-lining in the incredible rainforest! - Stephanie DiCiro

Most Americans dream of visiting New Zealand and— thanks to a new direct flight— those dreams can easily come true!

New Zealand is a commitment. The introduction of a direct flight to Auckland on Air New Zealand makes this commitment much easier for Houstonians. The flight is perfectly timed— leaving at 8:00pm. Premium Economy seating includes hearty, and surprisingly tasty food. Air New Zealand has also smartly paired their food with delicious New Zealand wines. The flight also includes New Zealand Films, entertainment, and a hightech, in-seat console allowing you to instant message fellow passengers. With all of these great accommodations, the fourteen hour flight literally flew by (pun intended).

The perfect start to a day in Auckland is to go up the SkyTower right in Auckland. Viewing this breathtaking city from 1,076 feet above gives you the chance to really see the expanse of the harbor and to get a look at interesting buildings and neighborhoods. I was there during the holidays, so the giant Santa on the side of a four-story building caught my eye.

I walked to the Langham Hotel and had time to tour the Symonds Street Cemetery. This was the first official cemetery in Auckland, which has been closed to burials since 1886. High Tea at the Langham is a great holiday tradition. Enjoy some bubbly before selecting from over 30 different tea flavors. I opted for the white blossom tea, a delightful blend of white tea handpicked from China’s mountaintops. The lodge experience in New Zealand allows travelers to traverse most of the country, and see many facets of the land all the while enjoying five-star, luxurious service. Three wellknown lodges are Americanowned and offer distinct New Zealand experiences. All of them also offer stunning accommodations and first class food overseen by group Executive Chef Dale Gartland.

The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs

With their superb cuisine and an exceptional wine cellar, you’ll find yourself looking forward to drinks and canapés each evening before dinner. Many guests follow similar itineraries and it’s fun to see familiar faces as you compare travel stories.

The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs Because there are no security checks or lines, inter-island flights are fast, easy, and carefree. First stop: Bay of Islands and The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs. This quaint lodge is

set into 6,000 acres of farm, forest, and beach land. The Kauri trees here are anywhere from 700 to 900 years old. This slow growing tree was previously used to build houses and repair ships. Get to know the property by taking a guided quad-bike tour. Follow Malcolm

from SeaToys around the property or see what it’s like to be a farmer with Farm Manager Jonathan. Although I’m from Texas, I was up close and personal with more sheep and cattle on this excursion than ever before! Ride through the Pine Forest and livestock-filled paddocks while enjoying expansive breathtaking views of the Cavalli Islands and Pacific Ocean. Three private beaches and an on-property waterfall give you the opportunity for a quick swim. The Pink Beach is a great place for a picnic. It’s also a breeding ground for the tuturiwhatu and other native New Zealand birdlife. Manuka honey is known for its healing qualities; so hop on over to the spa for a signature Manuka honey treatment.

Once a week a local dance troop comes to the property. While we sip on Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc, the Kerikeri’s Kapa Haka’s authentic performance offers a glimpse into the area’s cultural heritage. The dancers mingle with the guests, inviting us to get involved in the performance.

FINDING A KIWI IS NOT GUARANTEED, BUT IF YOU’RE LUCKY, YOU’LL HOLD ONE BEFORE THIS TOUR IS OVER

Most of the fun is available right on property and with surroundings this luxurious, you won’t want to leave. However, some off-site options include Manginangina, a park where nature walks teach the story of the forest with its massive trees and lush vegetation. Here, see how the forest evolved from young trees to the mature established forest during a guided walking tour of the Puketi Forest. Barbara, from Adventure Puketi, can arrange a private or group tour for you. This is a great activity for team building, conferences, and weddings. The Marsden Estate Winery is also

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers The town of Napier is unique simply due to its unique architecture. It’s one of the few cities featuring Art Deco architecture. The city was re-built after a storm at a time when Art Deco was popular. The land here at Hawkes Bay is extremely fertile making it perfect for ranching, farming, and growing wine grapes. It’s here you’ll find The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, another stop on your luxury lodge tour. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers is a working sheep and cattle ranch. It’s also a nature sanctuary with fencing around the property to protect the flightless kiwi from predators. The kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand,

A great way to see the 6,000 acre property is to hitch a ride in a jeep as it traverses this vast terrain. The gannets have distinctive blue markings around their eyes and a pale gold crown. They are a slightly larger than seagulls. Visiting the colony, you’ll see adults and young nesting. Look closely to see eggs and chicks in various stages of development. You’ll be amazed at how close you can get! It was nothing less than a National Geographic experience. Visitors to the colony will see adults and their young nesting in rows, carrying out their daily routine.

The birds can be seen from September until early May when they leave New Zealand and fly for Australia. In September, they return and build their nests, ready for the hatching of chicks during December and January. Due to the migratory nature of the birds, this activity is only available from September through May. Designed by legendary golf architect Tom Doak, the Cape Kidnappers par 71 golf course challenges golfers of all skill levels. The course is located above the ocean, providing dramatic cliff views. Avid golfer or not, this course is an absolute must.

We only left this property once and it was in search of wine. See the sights on a bike ride that starts, stops, and ends at various vineyards. Lunch at Elephant Hill winery was perfectly paired with the delectable food that they had to offer.

Just when you think New Zealand can’t get any better, you step foot into Queenstown and the gorgeous Matakauri Lodge. This is the crowning jewel in the trifecta of luxury lodges on our journey. Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge stayed here. Need we say more? Queenstown of New Zealand is the “adventure capital” where bungee jumping was invented. It’s also a cute town with great pubs, restaurants, and shopping. A few minutes from town is Matakauri— a picture perfect location on the banks of Lake Wakatipu framed by The Remarkables mountain range and Cecil Peak. Taking advantage of the view is an absolute MUST. The main lodge and each of the twelve separate guest suites feature a wall of windows that overlook the lake. Speaking of the view; soaking in the tub will become a nightly ritual. For dinner, the view is spectacular. You are surrounded by so much water, it looks as though you could be on a ship. The bounty is local and plentiful with a degustation menu carefully curated to pair perfectly with New Zealand wines. If you’ve golfed at each stop in New Zealand, crown the trip off with an extreme golf experience like none other. Lift off with Over the Top Helicopters and enjoy a scenic flight over Queenstown before landing on Cecil Peak. Tee off from 4,500 feet at the world’s most picturesque golf course and enjoy a wine and cheese basket to celebrate! New Zealand is a once-in-alifetime trip for many Americans. Families return to The King and the Prince Beach Resort year after year. Southern hospitality, great beach access, and expansive resort pools are just some of the reasons to love this escape. The resort is nestled along a beautiful stretch of beach on St. Simons Island, off Georgia’s coast. Travelers come from all over the world to enjoy this amenity-rich property.

Steeped in History Frank Horn and Morgan Wynn opened this regal property in 1935. Fires, grand re-openings and Navy takeovers are part of this seaside tale. During the winter of 1942, German U-boats were sighted off the Georgia coast and the hotel became a radar training facility for the U.S. Navy. It reopened to the public in 1947.

A family escape IF YOU ENJOY HISTORIC HOTELS AND A BEAUTIFUL BEACH, THIS IS A GREAT WEDDING DESTINATION

Fun for the whole family The historic property has been lovingly restored throughout the years. From the stained glass windows to the portraits of King George II and Prince Charles Edward Stewart, you’ll note attention to history at every turn. The Ocean is the star here with most guests spending their days walking, searching for shells or participating in water sports. The beach is expansive during low tides; but only a sliver of sand is left to walk on when the tide rolls in. No worries, the luxurious pool area has two large pools and a kiddie pool; plenty of room to play and relax within the private, gated complex.

Recent revitalization in Mobile’s many historical districts provides a picture window to the past. The Steeple on St. Francis is one of old Mobile’s most inspired new event venues that has emerged from the hallowed halls of an old Methodist church. This vintage space holds history within its timeworn walls although it has been renovated and repurposed to host concerts, parties, and weddings. Couples are drawn to this space because it tells an interesting story while also providing the exceptional aesthetic of immaculate stained glass windows and intricate wood-working details. If you

visit in the spring, be sure to hit the Mobile Historic Homes Tour. Ancestral homes, churches and house museums are open to the public for this two-day event to benefit the Historic Mobile Preservation Society. Mobile holds the distinction of being the original and unsung home to the infamous Mardi Gras parade and celebration. Each spring the parade rolls through the historic streets of downtown with its elaborate and vibrant floats, flooding the streets with beads and pelting the townspeople with Moon Pies. This parade is a grandiose finish to the revelry of a two-and-ahalf-week citywide celebration called Carnival! Carnival time in Mobile is a family-friendly

The outrageously popular LoDa ArtWalk brings thousands of people together to appreciate the latest in local art, music, food and culture. If carefully curated art is more your style, the Mobile Museum of Art showcases approximately 10,000 eclectic pieces from around the world and hosts exhibits, classes, programs and special events for the community. John regards this part of the world as some of the most awe-inspiring, scenic terrain in creation and his vision is to share it with others. First, he built a ranch. Then he was inspired to add a car museum followed by a café and a few guestrooms to accommodate visitors. Today, Gateway Canyons Colorado Resort and Spa is a full-service, 58-room/14-casita luxury resort. This one-of-a-kind resort sits at the mouth of five converging canyons, creating a picture-perfect setting for your destination wedding. The

A rare and unexpected offering here at the Gateway Canyons is the Driven Experience, allowing guests to drive some of the world’s most luxurious cars. Feeling hungry? There are a number of great choices within the adjoining Marriott properties and the nearby local eateries to have an amazing dining experience. If you have a taste for Italian, Gustino Italian Beachside Grill boasts a phenomenal menu and a 4-Star rating from AAA. During my visit, Gustino’s hosted high quality tequila tasting in their private tasting room, offering a sampling of Don Julio Luxury Tequilas in a wide range of vintages. Are you ready for food that is as beautiful as it is tasty? Try the fantastic Sasi Thai Cancun restaurant in the CasaMagna

next door. Sasi Thai’s menu is a combination of nouveau Thai cuisine and traditional favorites. You simply can’t leave Cancun without getting out of the hotel and having some great tacos. Although good tacos are not hard to find in Cancun, I was lucky enough to attend the main event of Cancun’s annual Wine & Food Festival, the Star Chefs: Gourmet Taco Competition. This event invites you to taste signature tacos from 16 award-winning chefs along with the best wine, tequila and spirits and vote on your favorites. With loads of great adventures to be had in Cancun, it can be hard to choose but visiting a Mexican cenote is a definite must! The Cenote Samulà and Cenote Xkeken are located about two hours outside Cancun but this adventure is well worth the trip. Just 135 miles from Albuquerque International Sunport and a short, 90-minute drive from Santa Fe, lies the sunny town of Taos, New Mexico. It’s here that you’ll find world-class skiing, hiking, camping, whitewater rafting, kayaking, fishing, and mountain biking.

Taos is also a city steeped in culture and history. It is home to the country’s oldest continuously-inhabited Pueblo community. In fact, many cultures blend together in Taos’ rich heritage including Hispanic, Native American, African American, Anglo, and more. The diverse cultural traditions that built Casa Benavidez

this community are beautifully evident in the eclectic art and dining scene. Other hidden gems include cultural sites like the historic San Francisco de Asis Mission Church (a National Historic Landmark), the downtown plaza known as “El Corazón de Taos,” not to mention a wealth of museums and art galleries.

Hacienda Del Sol

- 174 -

New Mexicans have a tradition of inviting travelers into their homes and offering incredible hospitality. Bed and breakfast style inns all throughout Taos keep this tradition of hospitality alive. We started our B & B

tour at Hacienda del Sol, which is situated on 1.2 majestic acres. The hacienda adjoins 95,000 acres of Taos Pueblo land with Taos Mountain. This stunning, picture perfect vista provides the ideal backdrop for an unforgettable wedding ceremony. We stayed in the oldest of three historic adobe buildings, constructed in 1804. Each morning we awoke to the aroma of freshly-ground, special blend coffee and a delicious breakfast in the air. This property is the perfect launch pad to explore the streets of Taos, or if you’d rather ski, head up to the Taos Ski Valley. The big news on the slopes this year is the availability of the Mountain Collective Passes.

The Mountain Collective gives adventure seekers a two-day pass to 16 mountain resorts including Taos. The legend of Ernie Blake, founder of Taos Ski Valley, is alive and well as people are newly-introduced to skiing and

snowboarding daily at the Ernie Blake Snowsports School. It is often said that Taos Mountain has the ability to make you a better skier. Blake knew that a long day of skiing could improve your skills but it could also wear you down so, he planned ahead.

He buried martinis in Spanish flasks called Porrons at the base of certain trees along the slopes then marked the trees with a bow so skiers knew where to look. This tradition continues at the Martini Tree Bar where it’s always après ski time.

Also new this season is The Blake at Taos Ski Valley. The Blake, named for the Blake family, is an 80-room alpine guesthouse conveniently located next door to Lift 1 to deliver carefree mountainside adventures to its guests. If you’re looking for a unique wedding venue, The Bavarian Lodge & Restaurant provides a beautiful backdrop to make your Taos wedding celebration even more distinctive and memorable. In the main hotel, there are three glorious options designed to fit your unique wedding plans. For a smaller guest list, consider the Sunrise Amphitheater, a gorgeous flagstone area set against the canvas of the nearby mountains. The Sunrise is an ideal space for an outdoor ceremony particularly in the early evening. The light is just right for your closest friends and family to celebrate and snap

unforgettable photos of your happy occasion. This outdoor space can seat up to 350 guests and the adjoining veranda can be set up for cocktails or act as a backup location in case of inclement weather. For weddings during colder months or large groups, the versatile Tamaya Ballroom might be a better choice. You’ll love the dazzling chandeliers in this capacious yet functional room that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. Perhaps the most unique of these spaces, The House of the Hummingbird, duplicates the rustic charm of adobe pueblo ruins complete with views of the Sandia Mountains and the

flaming festivities by

Stephanie DiCiro

Roses, rendezvous, and romance come to mind when you think about Valentine’s Day. However, sometimes it’s nice to think outside of the box and fire up some new ideas to create a spark in which we celebrate love. I was recently commissioned to organize and implement a wedding shower on the night of February 14th. My vision for the event included bright red and gold linens accented by flowers with bold pops of color to capture the theme of “Red Hot.” For a next level experience I hired fire performers and an aerialist from LG Event Entertainment & Production LLC. continues on next page

- 187 -

When selecting the linens at House of Hough, I designed a few tables with fancy gold lace overlays above the red linens to make statement pieces in some areas. This worked perfectly with the fiery inspired flower arrangements as centerpieces. The fire performers greeted the guests at the entrance of the party and later met up with the aerialist for a duo performance that stunned the guests! On top of the spectacular performance, the aerialist poured champagne into the guests’ flutes while being suspended on an aerial rope. I also hired Sourced Craft Cocktails to pour custom cocktails for the guests as they enjoyed the show. Each drink was specifically created to match the party’s theme. Customized champagne labels were created that matched the invitations for an eye-catching display as well as a special keepsake. Cake balls, cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, candies, and of course, red hots filled the dessert bar. Cakes by Gina followed the party’s theme with pops of red décor throughout

- 188 -

their cake pops and cupcakes. I wanted to satisfy guests of all ages and their sweet cravings by offering a wide array of goodies. I also customized take-home goodie bags to pack up some sweet treats for the guests to take home. The most important aspect of party planning is staying on budget and keeping a spreadsheet that you can access from any location. This will help immensely with staying on top of organizing expenses and last minute purchases. Don’t be afraid to take some risks when designing an event and don’t sweat the small stuff— just think about the big picture!

MODERN CLASSICS

A Sneak Peek into Ryan Seacrest’s Fall 2017 Distinction Collection

I

In 2014, Ryan Seacrest, preeminent broadcast personality, producer and innovative entrepreneur, founded Ryan Seacrest Distinction (RSD), a menswear clothing brand known for delivering quality timeless looks for the modern day male with a contemporary eye. Masculine elements, geometric lines, superior design, exquisite fabric and distinctive colors, are combined in unique ways to create a modern classic look. The RSD brand incorporates an exceptional feature, the Style Made SmartTM matching system, in all of its product lines. This innovative concept provides expert style and colormatching tips that help guys create a seamlessly coordinated look every time they step outside the door. With a focus on versatility, Ryan Seacrest Distinction offers a variety of products from men’s tailored clothing and accessories to sweaters and outwear. Anyone who steps into this clothing won’t be disappointed with its individualized contemporary style!

by Stephanie

DiCiro “I launched the Distinction men’s tailored clothing and accessories line in 2014 to give guys smart and stylish options that were still affordable. Three years in, we were excited to bring Matteo on to help elevate the brand’s designs and help us expand into new classifications,” said Seacrest. “Our fall collection is an interpretation of how I actually dress these days. I may wear a blazer over a t-shirt or denim button-down shirt, or a more casual pant with a dress shirt and tie, or jeans with a sport coat with sneakers. We really wanted

In March of 2017, Seacrest and Matteo Gottardi, founder of The WRKshop studio and now the man behind the ingenious direction for RSD collection, presented a special first look at the Fall 2017 line during the Women’s Wear Daily Men’s Wear Summit in Brooklyn, New York. The new “lifewear” collection allows modern men to create signature looks and dress for their personalities in clothes that will take them from a day at work to a night out on the town.

to give guys more freedom and flexibility in their dressing because that’s where our culture is today. Everything needs to go together effortlessly. The RSD collection pieces are easy and comfortable, in addition to being carefully tailored. All of our product lines incorporate great colors, fabrics, textures and detail so that wherever you are or want to go, you can really let your individualized style shine through,” Seacrest added. Gottardi stated, “We felt that there was an opportunity in the market for a ‘modern classic’ American brand. We designed the line with a nod to the traditional everyday staples that men have grown up seeing their fathers wearing, but adding a provocative or sartorial twist. Whether that be making a pant in a suiting fabric but in a five-pocket denim model or a sport shirt with unexpected trims and eyecatching detailing. Distinction aims to give a man pieces that he needs but with more than enough personality to wear at the office as well as after work.” Providing top quality materials, Ryan Seacrest Distinction works with the following licensee partners: Peerless for the timeless suits, Randa for the stylish accessories, and Itochu for the fashionable dress shirts and sportswear. The RSD Collection is available exclusively at 150 Macy’s stores nationwide beginning September of 2017 and online. @ www.Macys.com

Rajani Obeso met Daniel Alvarado in Catholic education classes. At the time, they were freshmen in high school and had barely spoken, yet definitely had their eyes on each other. In ninth grade, she told her mom she wanted Daniel to be her boyfriend but it wasn’t until their senior year that she finally got the courage to text him. “That night we both confessed to each other that we had always had a crush on one another,” she said.

Daniel asked Rajani to prom while at her parent’s house in The Woodlands, the same place where eight years later, he would propose. They had both graduated from Texas Tech University and were back in the Houston area when Daniel made up his mind that he wanted to propose on Thanksgiving Day. He came up with a perfect plan and gave the family a week’s notice. The couple spent the first part of Thanksgiving Day with Daniel’s family. On the way to Rajani’s parent’s house they stopped for gas. This gave his family time to rush to her house and get into position.

When the couple entered the house, no one answered when she yelled hello. Then Daniel grabbed her hand and led her to the living room where she caught her first glimpse of the candlelit backyard. “It was a perfectly romantic and love-filled scene that completely took my breath away,” she said. The setting included a small tree hung with pictures of the couple, a heart-shaped cake and chilled champagne. Their dog, Geo, appeared wearing a chalkboard sign around his neck that asked “Will you marry my dad?” That weekend, they watched Texas Tech play at Cowboy’s Stadium in

They began to plan for their January 2018 wedding in Houston, Texas. Rajani attended the Bridal Extravaganza Show and applied for a chance to become the next Billboard Bride. Out of more than 300 brides, she was selected to represent the Bridal Extravaganza on billboards all over the city. The whirlwind experience began at Ventura’s Bridal Fashions, where she looked lovely in an array of beautiful gowns. The Billboard Bride photo shoot took place at Moffitt Oaks, a premier wedding event venue. Andy Hopper from Weddings by Design by H-E-B created two bouquets for the occasion. Hair and make-up was provided by the team at Simple Beauty Artistry. The husband and wife photography team of Ana and Ivan Garcia were on hand to capture every moment of the day. All the details fell beautifully into place for this lucky Billboard Bride.

The Bridal Extravaganza Show

TESTIMONIALS Photographer: Khanh Nguyen

The event offered something for everyone

Amanda “The Bridal Extravaganza show was a blast! It really exposed me to everything I needed for my wedding. Everyone was super helpful and I made some really good connections. Of course, I tried every single photo booth and have the pictures to prove it.”

“We had an opportunity to meet the vendors and get a glimpse of what they could offer to help create the wedding of our dreams. I am very grateful for the Bridal Extravaganza. We were able to interact and get a feel for each vendor’s style and ideas. Because there were so many vendors, we were able to talk to hundreds in a short period of time, which saved us countless hours of travel and meetings. Thanks to this wonderful event, we hired the majority of our vendors that day. Also, the event had a plethora of raffles and giveaways. Overall, my mother-inlaw, bridesmaids, fiancé and I had a great time and experience. The event offered something for everyone.”

- 206 -

Ashley “This was such a fun thing that I took my mom, my mother-in-law, and all of my girlfriends along with me! We had such a great time and [the show] got us excited about the wedding. I loved looking at all of the flowers and bouquets because they were all real. It was a great way to get ideas. All of the food and cake tastings were amazing! [There were] so many good choices, it would have been hard to pick! It was an overall fun and exciting experience.”

My mother and I attended the Bridal Extravaganza Show and really enjoyed ourselves.

“Yes, I attended in January with my best friend. We both got married within 4 months of each other, so it was a blast seeing all the wedding vendors together. I was able to see banquet ideas, lock down decoration ideas, and find some new inventive things.”

“My mother and I attended the Bridal Extravaganza Show and really enjoyed ourselves. When we first walked in, we were greeted warmly and then found ourselves overwhelmed at the size of the convention and the large number of vendors! After we gathered ourselves and began walking through the aisles, we had a blast. I found my ceremony musicians there (Divisi Strings) – I never thought about having strings play at the ceremony, but it was beautiful and I received so many compliments from the guests. Also, we found our Rolls Royce get-a-way car there as well and booked them on the spot with Monarch British Limousines!”

Matthew & John “Without the Bridal Extravaganza, our wedding would not have been as successful as it turned out. I attended the show while John was working. The show was overwhelming and not quite accessible at first, it seemed like I needed a guide. So much of the show was geared specifically towards ‘brides’ that a random guy walking around asking a few questions didn’t get the same attention from vendors as others. Thankfully, everyone I spent more than a few minutes with was charming and professional. The best thing from the Extravaganza was meeting our photographer. Thomas was shooting a wedding that day, but his wife Penelope spoke with me for a while and answered my questions. Booking with Thomas led us to our cake vendor and coordinator on his recommendation. That ticket to the Extravaganza led to our wedding being exactly what we wanted.”

Brides ADVICE “Add personal touches to your wedding. People remember weddings filled with personal touches. For example: Our officiate read the same vows my grandfather read at my parents wedding; we included ‘our love story’ in the programs- which we made by hand ourselves; Ben threw my garter wrapped around a football because he was a former college football player; we had only our brothers and sisters in the bridal party, which made the day very intimate and our guests knew everyone standing by our sides.”

ADVICE

“Work together. The wedding is for the both of you. It will be much easier if you work together as a team rather than one person taking control and doing all the work. Listen to what your significant other wants in the wedding and compromise. Also, something will probably go wrong at your wedding, but don’t worry about it. We never had our champagne toast and we were very behind schedule with everything, but no one ever noticed it. All your guests are having such a good time that the small things that you notice, they won’t notice at all.”

Kasey

Photography by: David Jones Photography

ADVICE

“When choosing your vendors, give preference to those who have previously worked at your venue. This will minimize logistical issues on your big day. For vendors new to your venue, I would recommend doing a walk through with them prior to the wedding, so they can familiarize themselves with the lighting, electrical outlets, sound system, etc. “

ADVICE

Erika

“My biggest tip, if at all possible, is give yourself some time to sleep on the day after your wedding. I promise you that you will never be more tired. We got up early the next morning to drive to Seaside and it was so hard on such a little amount of sleep! Luckily, once we got there it was a week of relaxation.

ADVICE

Bethany

Photographer: Morgan Lynn

Wear comfortable shoes!! You think people will notice what shoes you have on, but they won’t. You will be on your feet for a long time, especially when you’re taking pictures. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t worn flat sandals!”

Regan “I read this in an article and it works, so I feel like I must share-- when you have to go to the restroom, instead of having your bridesmaids lift your dress and stand awkwardly around… instead turn and face the back of the toilet. Probably too much information, but it works.

Kaylee

Photographer: Andrea Elizabeth Photography

ADVICE

The day of the wedding, I gave my cell phone to one of my bridesmaids and had her respond to my text messages and phone calls. She’s my best friend so she knew how to respond and when to ask me about something. This way I was able to fully enjoy and take in the entire day without having to hassle with responding back to texts about silly things or even being aware of silly things that may or may not have stressed me out.

“First, really consider a First Look. I was super traditional going into the planning, but once I stepped back and looked at things practically, I realized that it would make the day way less stressful. It was also such a sweet moment for Josh and I to connect because it was just his eyes on me, not 200 others.

Photographer: The Silhouette Studio

ADVICE

Second, remember your goal. It should not be to have the perfect wedding, it is to get married and strive for the most fulfilling marriage. Don’t lose sight of the goal in mind; it will make your big day a happy day!

Last, smile and remember to be kind to yourself. The world puts enough pressure on brides…you don’t need to add your own.”

Amy Photographer: ChrisWPhoto

Third, consider waiting a day to go on your honeymoon! Josh and I waited one day before flying out because it was cheaper. The day after our wedding it was so nice to just be able to relax and not wake up at the crack of dawn! We did some local things and got to rest before we headed off to St. Lucia for some fun!

The night before our wedding, after the rehearsal dinner, I had two of my bridesmaids/best friends spend the night with me. The next morning, I had preordered a ton of food to arrive because I read that the bride always forgets to eat the day of the wedding. Great friends and food was the perfect way for me to relax and start the morning. The morning of your wedding, do whatever it is that is relaxing for you. Also, surround yourself with the people that make you feel the most at ease.” “Make sure you order Save the Dates and invites for the number of households, NOT the number of people you invited to the wedding. Oops! :)

ADVICE

Also, your entire registry doesn’t have to be plates and mixers. Have fun with it. We added a Margaritaville Frozen Margarita Machine and a 2-person arcade basketball game. They were some of the first items to go and everyone enjoys them when they come over to our house!”

- 211 -

Photographer: Scott Kelley Photography

Alessia “You should sweat the small stuff, the big stuff is easy; it’s handled by planners and the venue. The small unique details enhance the event, and people do notice!

ADVICE

“First tip is to just BREATHE! Know what you want and do not shy away from making your wedding the way you want it. The guests are usually very eager to see the beautiful union, the unique details, and the personal touches that help depict who the bride and groom are as a couple. Also, my day-of-coordinator was a saving grace! She was able to assist me with certain items I did not even think about; a true asset to my wedding. Consider a coordinator if you can! Lastly, do not forget to stop to take it all in because it goes by so fast. “

ADVICE

Follow the color schemes you would wear or use in your home; don’t try new things for your wedding. My colors were gold, gray, and white; colors I wear daily!

Photographer: Bend the Light

Keep things flowing in a timely manner; lengthy speeches and a drawn dinner can kill the mood, if you’re trying to create a fun party! ”

Jillian “The biggest piece of advice I can give is to accept help where you can get it from someone you trust. My mom was such a huge help throughout the whole planning process. I was a busy medical student at the time we were planning my wedding. She did everything from contacting the caterers to even making all of the centerpieces and artificial floral arrangements and place cards.

ADVICE

We also hired a day-of-coordinator (Wedding and Event Designs by Pamela) who made it so much easier to enjoy the big day and allow my mom and I to relax and not worry about things (because, let’s be honest, the groom wasn’t going to worry about those things anyway!). I highly recommend it if it fits within your budget.”

- 212 -

Shauna

“Don’t settle for anything ordinary. Try to customize your wedding with your own personality and the things you and your significant other love so that, when you look back at the day, it’ll feel like your own. I know that I am personally happy that I took the time to find a venue and theme that spoke to me. It’s difficult and tedious as a bride to take the time to work on the details and how to make the wedding unique to you and your interests, but in the end it’s so worth it!”

ADVICE

Photographer: DC Stanley Photography

“I learned to see all of my options in person. I had them show me our inclusive package at the hotel and requested separate dressing rooms for our guests. Know that not everyone will RSVP, it’s stressful, but you will have to contact him or her, in the end, and ask if they will be joining. Plan for people to bring uninvited guests, people might bring unannounced dates. Stand back with your new spouse during your big day and view all of the guests having a blast during the party, they are all there for you all! It’s amazing to see so much love in one room. There are also things going on that you didn’t remember planning or picking out. If possible eat somewhere private with your new spouse. We didn’t do that and we barely were able to eat since everyone is coming up wanting to talk.

Why do you need a travel agent with hundreds of online sites available to you today? Let me give you a few reasons: 1.

Money- I will work within your budget to find you the best rates available. I search numerous suppliers and have access to special promotions to provide you with the best package prices out there. Some people shy away from travel agents because they think they will pay more. I don't add any extra fees for my services, so you're getting my experience and connections for free!

2.

Time - You could spend hours online researching the endless choices available, bouncing from one site to another. Planning a trip shouldn't be stressful. Just give me a call and I will take the hassle away, plus give you options you may not have even considered.

3.

Customer Service- I have been a top producer in the travel business for over 15 years. Through site inspections, supplier certifications and training seminars, I spend countless hours staying informed and up to date on travel products. Years of networking have given me extensive connections in the industry that I can call on to make sure my clients are well taken care of from the time they leave to the time they arrive back home.

4.

Troubleshooting- Perhaps the most important reason to use a travel agent is to have someone there for you when something goes wrong. Try calling that online booking website when your flight is cancelled or delayed and you miss your connection, or when your room with a view overlooks the entire AIC system, or even worse ... you arrive at your destination and the resort is oversold. These things and a thousand others happen every day. My clients know that I am just a phone call away and will work on their behalf to resolve any issue.

WEDDING WHINES? Higher Consciousness Can be Your Guide TRUE LOVE ADVISOR, SONDRA SNEED ATTUNES TO SPIRIT ON MATTERS OF MATRIMONY

Mother’s Mouth Sets Bride Off-Balance

SONDRA SNEED IS A SOURCE COMMUNICATOR, SOUL READER, AND GODSCRIBE. SHE CONVERSES IN Q&A FORMAT WITH UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND IS WORKING ON HER SECOND BOOK, “LOVE’S HIGHWAY; WHERE WILL IT TAKE YOU WHEN YOU CAN’T GET THERE ALONE.” FIND HER AT GODSCRIBE.COM

Bride’s Q:

Answer:

Dear Sondra,

Dear Bride,

My mother always tells me her opinion about how I look in clothes. I don’t want her opinion about my wedding dress because she wants me to wear something that I think looks cheap. How do I get her off my back without hurting her?

Unfortunately, your mother’s disapproval has given you feelings of insecurity about your looks for a long time. How do we know? The fact that you don’t already know how to ignore her means this runs deep in the family. On you, it shows-up in your body language and posture.

Your insecurity about how you look invites her criticism, whether you realize it or not. When your shoulders droop forward and your chest caves, it appears to her as if you aren’t sure about what you look like. So she makes recommendations based on what makes her feel pretty and proud of being feminine. However, when you wear feminine-frilly clothes, unfortunately, your lumbered walk cheapens the look that she’s trying to give you. You’ll need to learn how to glide with your head held high, to keep your fear of her at bay. Here’s the real clincher…It’s your quiet rebellion that makes you not want to please your mom, while simultaneously you desperately wish to avoid her biting criticism. Unfortunately, this has made you anxious and profoundly insecure in clothes around her. So we have an assignment for you. [Step One] Silence that voice in your head, which she has programmed. You’ll recognize it when you look in the mirror. If she’s the first thing that comes

- 222 -

Photos: Graphic Stock

to mind, instead of whether you like the neckline or how the waist sits on you, you’ll know which thoughts to “Shhhh.” [Step Two] Try on every dress that appeals to you with the help of a wedding gown advisor and try on as many as possible. Narrow it down to two or three of your favorites then call your mother and invite her opinion. Let her know up front you’ve narrowed it down to your favorites. Tell her you want to shorten the amount of time it will take to make a decision by working with an expert fitter. [Step Three] Most importantly, learn and practice good posture. Take yoga classes. Practice power poses. Take video of yourself walking and fix the problem areas of your stride by becoming aware of how you carry your insecurity. This will make a big difference in all areas of your life and in feeling comfortable in anything you wear. The commanding presence of your gate will say, “I don’t have a care in the world.”

Aligning with your mate is always the best arrangement

Florist Made to Honor Bride’s Q:

Answer:

Dear Sondra,

Dear Undecided,

My maid of honor has been my close friend since college. She owns a floral business with her mom and they are doing my wedding. The problem is that we argue over the colors. She says my choices are a mistake. I can’t decide if she’s right, or if she’s just thinking of her business because her suggestions are $2,000 more than what I was thinking. My fiancé thinks she’s too expensive and my mom thinks she’s too involved in every part of the plans. I don’t want to lose a friend and a maid of honor over a few thousand dollars! Should I choose a different florist or a different maid of honor?

We don’t think you need to change either of them. There are two issues annoying you. One, your mom feels left out. Two, your girlfriend’s aggressive personality is alienating your fiancé and overpowering your

mom. Because you are the least decisive of them, they are competing with each other for your attention on the details, but the choice is easy. Aligning with your future husband is the only choice. Your mother will understand that fact and your girlfriend will concede. Your man comes first over everyone else in your life… period. Now, about the flowers…your girlfriend’s suggestions are not based on business, they are based on her personal and professional tastes. Ask her to stay within a specific budget that you and your husband-to-be have decided upon. Aligning with your mate is always the best arrangement.

Don’t boss him around and think he’s going to respond favorably, either

Groom Gets Goofy Over Planning Bride’s Q:

Answer:

Dear Sondra,

Dear Frustrated,

My fiancé has no interest in the details of the wedding plans and when I try to get him involved he acts like he’s gone slow-witted! He either ignores me or says, “ You’re so much better than me at this stuff.” How do I get him to help? Grrrrr…I’m so frustrated!

Humans are more “monkey see, monkey do” than we like to admit. The truth is he’s not in the least bit “trained” by his father or society to be involved. It’s not that he’s lazy or wants you to do everything; it’s that he honestly feels stupid on the matter. Look around; are there groom’s magazines or “Say Yes to the Tux” TV shows? No. So, he has no idea where he’s supposed to step in and as long as there are no signs on the wall, he just doesn’t feel like he belongs in this “woman’s world.” Here’s how to handle your man’s inability to see himself in the planning… give him specific tasks that aren’t associated with “bridal” stuff. Like this, “Will you

- 224 -

please check out the prices on [event, wedding venues] in [add specific areas] and find out if they are available [on our date]?” Use words that he can associate with non-wedding research, like costs, dates, and activities. He may even put them in a spreadsheet for you. As long as there’s not a wedding dress associated with the subject, he can stay manly about it. Don’t get mad at him; get mad at media and its sexist pigeon-holing of men and women. Also, it’s really important to stay calm when you ask him to do something like this. If you get frustrated with him, he’ll feel like you’re going to be easy to disappoint and he might retreat right back to his ‘safety zone.’ It’s likely he would rather ignore you than disappoint you. Don’t boss him around and think he’s going

to respond favorably, either. He will avoid you or cower to you. Either reaction is not very sexy, so appeal to him as your equal partner. It’s also important to own your emotions. Don’t blame him for how he’s making you feel. Even if he’s triggering your feelings they are still your emotions. Say things like, “I’m sorry I’m getting frustrated with you, I don’t mean to. It’s just more than I can handle without you. Will you help me out? Be my partner? I really need to feel like this is our wedding, not mine.” Then give him a typed list of items to look into for “our wedding.” Be honest and direct. Give him a directory to work down. Let him “research” specific details and don’t micro-manage him. He’s your man, not your employee.

Studios

What do you think about people who meet on television and get married? When I meet them in person they act like they’ve known each other forever; just like my brides and grooms who come in and have been engaged for a long time. I just think it’s so hard to meet people right now. If this is the way they are going to meet the love of their life, and be on national television, I say why not? What does your firm specialize in and how do you use social media for wedding planning? We do everything from rustic to traditional to contemporary.

I feel a good event planner, wedding planner, can really listen, listen, listen. You have to be able to listen. A lot of event planners are fighting Pinterest and fighting social but I’m going with it because it’s not going to change. It’s hard for some people to visualize or explain what they want. So, I take their Pinterest boards, scale it down and I take the consistent ideas and that’s how I design their wedding. I used to be as young as the bride when I was planning weddings; now I’m as old as the parents. I don’t fight with Millennials; I listen. Do you allow brides to select their own vendors or do you insist they use yours? A lot of vendors think I’m stuck (on the same vendors). I’m such a loyal person and I enjoy working with someone who outdoes themselves every week. Sometimes the client comes and says I want to use a certain vendor.I’m very open

- 264 -

and with the Millennials; they come in and tell me exactly how it’s going to go down. I have met some really great vendors because of their research. I don’t have the time that they have to really dig deep. Where do you find inspiration? I shop vintage every Sunday. I may not buy anything but I’m completely inspired. Vintage will never, ever be gone but it’s definitely going out; it’s not a focal point. Remember when we were mixing all the vintage containers? Well, now we are mixing contemporary metallic, right? Now we are going rose gold, gold, silver, so it may not be vintage but it came from the

vintage idea of mixing out of your grandmother’s cupboard. What is your impression of Texas brides? What I love about Texas is they (brides) do it in a big way. Southern girls are the kindest, ever. I learned about Southern Charm when I planned Jessica Simpson’s wedding in Austin. There’s nothing like it anywhere. There’s no fighting. Everyone wants to help. And it’s part of a community of helping. I think Southern weddings stay traditional and big. What is trending in weddings? I like when you walk into a ballroom and it looks like

I USED TO BE AS YOUNG AS THE BRIDE WHEN I WAS PLANNING WEDDINGS; NOW I’M AS OLD AS THE PARENTS. I DON’T FIGHT WITH MILLENNIALS; I LISTEN.

someone’s living room, it’s my favorite. Then people stay longer, I love a completely twinkled ceiling; people feel like they are dancing under the stars. Later in the evening, outdoor ceremonies are a big trend because they are more romantic. People want hundreds of candles and you can actually see the candles. So,they are doing hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour first and then right from the ceremony we go into dinner.

Veil or no veil? I always want a bride to wear a veil. I love veils. It’s the only time you’ll ever wear one. You don’t even wear a veil when you are dead. I love them. And there are so many options it’s not like there’s only one veil. And you can take it right off after the ceremony if you want. What traditions are important for brides? I love traditions. I love the fact that we are not so ahead of ourselves that we don’t remember the past. And why we have a hanky and why we have all these little something blue. All that stuff is awesome and it’s great for the pictures too.

- 265 -

SO PREPARE FOR IT. I RESPECT THAT THEY ARE GOING TO FLIP OUT. I DON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY AND THEY ARE SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY ON EACH LITTLE THING. DON’T LET IT TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE. THE WORST THING FOR ME IS A BRIDE WHO COMES IN AND SAYS I’VE QUIT MY JOB TO PLAN MY WEDDING, THEN I WANT TO CRY.

- 266 -

What was it like to plan your son Jordan’s wedding. You know, doing your own, the expectations are so high. I am obsessed with my daughter-in-law. She loves vintage and she likes blue and green. We collected blue and green vintage glass and filled them with white flowers. We transformed a brick warehouse where they used to bind books for UC colleges (the kids love books). It was serendipitous how it came together. We brought in 18 magnolia trees

I had built. My son wanted to walk down the aisle to rap music. I didn’t understand. We played (a rap song) with 24 strings. That was unique and personalized. Sometimes today when brides want suggestions from me and I say you know what my son did... We’ve done it more because it’s so cool. What is your advice to brides? If it’s possible, you’ve got to go into planning your wedding with the goal of getting married. The end goal is the “I do” and not all the minutia before the “I do.” Stay focused on the reason why you are doing all this stuff. Keep your sense of humor. I always say to the bride, you’re going to have a flip out. You’ll get to the point where someone had set you off.
