exi Abrego is Houston’s new Billboard Bride. Selected from thousands of brides who attended the January Bridal Extravaganza Show at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Lexi demonstrated her enthusiastic passion for wedding planning along with her grace and beauty. You can meet her at the Bridal Extravaganza July 18-19, 2020 and see her on billboards throughout the greater Houston area. The Billboard Bride photo shoot was a whirlwind of excitement for Lexi. A magical trip to Ventura’s Bridal Fashions was the first step in the process. The vast array of gowns available makes Ventura’s the perfect place to search for the Billboard Bride’s dream gown. “Each gown was prettier than the one before,” says Lexi. With dress in hand, the photo crew headed to Blackberry Park in the woods of North Houston to utilize one of the latest crazes in entertainment. Tipis (also known as teepees) create festival-like settings for weddings and events and add interesting depth and detail to photos.

BILLBOARD BRIDE Lexi and Emilio’s relationship began in 2014 and has grown deeper with time. Over the years, they found their favorite restaurant: Gaido’s Seafood, located on the Seawall in Galveston. “It’s one of the most romantic dinner spots and great for date night,” says Lexi. For years, this has been a “go to” spot for the happy couple. On a particularly beautiful evening in early November, they were sitting at a special corner table at Gaido’s when “Emilio just leaped out of his chair and got on his knee and asked me to marry him,” says Lexi excitedly. The ring box even had a light in it. Was it the glow of the ring box, or Lexi’s glow that other diners noticed when they broke into applause and sent champagne to congratulate the couple? After dinner, the couple headed to the beach for pictures. Lexi found out later, Emilio’s original plan had been to ask for her hand in marriage during family Thanksgiving, but Emilio just couldn’t wait. “The whole family was supposed to do this as a team and then he ended up doing it intimately at Gaido’s, which was just as special,” she says.

BILLBOARD BRIDE Lexi has about a year to enjoy being engaged and plan her big day. Her wedding will be at Sacred Heart Church in Galveston and the reception will be at the San Luis Resort. An array of talented vendors from the Bridal Extravaganza Show put their creative genius together for this new and unique photo shoot. The design team at Holyoak Floral Designs, headed by Stacie Holyoak, added the perfect floral touches. “The boho chic look is definitely trending,” says Holyoak. “I’m trying to capture what mother nature has and bring the beauty to life in a different, meaningful way. ”A mixture of dry and fresh flowers creates an organic and natural vibe versus the traditional. “This look makes a statement for the brides who want to show their organic side,” she says. On the billboard, Lexi holds a light pink bouquet with purple accents created by the talented designers at H-E-B Blooms. Hair and makeup can create various looks. In this case, Mayra Malik of Simple Beauty Artistry knew braids would be a great addition. “Lexi has great hair to work with,” says Mayra. The setting at Blackberry Park is unique. “We are so excited to offer this new type of entertainment option to the Houston area,” says Lexi Snyder. Her team spent six months gathering items to enhance the aesthetic of the space. From silverware, to place settings and antique glassware; the venue staff
has lots of options. For this shoot, a macramé wall hanging was added as an additional focal point; baskets along with colorful rugs were incorporated throughout. Although the entire venue is actually outside, a ceremony site was set up right outside the tipi. Just before dusk, the light was simply perfect for Ivan Garcia of Ivan Garcia Studios. “Lexi is a natural; each pose better than the last,” he says. With the tipi wall as a backdrop, the floral arch and the individual vases, each holding a single flower, are highlighted perfectly. Benches take the place of pews leading to the altar.

Wedding Location: Paula & Alan were married under a giant oak tree at the groomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s private property in Cameron, TX, overlooking a pond and nearby hay bales. The altar area was centered between two beautiful ferns and the tree was adorned with flowing fabric that allowed the light to shine through it. The family farm was recently acquired by the groom and was the perfect setting for this Fall wedding with hay bales, changing leaves and a starry night sky. This loving couple read their own heartfelt vows aloud with teary eyes and joyful smiles.

Unique Details: All of the details including Paula’s bouquet were handmade by the bride. The decor featured an array of fall colors and green elements from silver dollar eucalyptus. The reception took place in the nearby home’s covered porch. The cake topper was first used by the groom’s mother when she was married in 1955. This was a surprise to her and a very moving gesture from the mother of the groom. Lit lanterns swayed in the gentle breeze, while Edison lights hung from the ceiling.

How you met Rocky and I met in 2003 in Allen, TX when we were in middle school. We were both playing basketball with our friends when he challenged us to play against him. Despite how bad I beat him in basketball, I knew in that moment that he was going to be my husband one day! We continued to be friends in middle school and dated through high school. Although, we parted ways for college in 2009, we both felt as though we were each other’s soulmate and would eventually find each other again. In 2013 after we graduated college, Rocky asked me on a first and last date, for the last time.

Proposal story On August 5, 2017, Rocky and I were on vacation with our family in Estes Park, CO. That afternoon, Rocky took me on a hike in the mountains while our family stayed at the campsite. I noticed he was acting different, and would not let me hold the backpack we took with us. We hiked to a waterfall and climbed down from a rock to get closer to the view. As we were both admiring the breathtaking scenery, he opened his backpack and pulled out a ring. I was astounded and I immediately asked him, “What are you doing?” before realizing what a special and life changing moment this was.

Honeymoon Rocky completely surprised me by planning our honeymoon! We relaxed near the blue glistening beaches, ate delicious food that had an explosion of unique tastes and enjoyed the history and tastings of the alcoholic beverages they created. This will always be the most memorable trip of our lives!
Anything you did that was unique Rocky has always surprised me with my favorite flowers, red roses. Coincidentally, my middle name is Rose! We knew the theme for our wedding would be centered around red roses and our hashtag, #RockandRose. We love the holiday season and had Christmas trees lined next to our sweetheart table hence, our wedding theme December to Remember. This, along with the lights and red roses, made the reception hall feel intimate, yet elegant at the same time.

For her special day the bride wore not one, but two beautiful gowns. For the ceremony she wore a long sleeve fitted gown with sheer accents by designer Michael Costello. For the remainder of the night the bride wore a solid white off the shoulder gown by designer LaQuan Smith. Erica made her descend from the second level down the grand marble staircase and onto the Italian cobblestone floor where her groom was waiting. Erica was given away by her Aunt who raised her; her late mother was honored at the wedding. The bride and groom exchanged personal vows along with a Cartier ring for the groom.

Frank and Natalie met on a stormy Houston night at a neighborhood lounge. Natalie had attended a charity fashion show that evening and was meeting friends afterward. When the time came to pop the question, Frank organized a surprise engagement party at the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newly purchased home. Since the space was still empty, Frank hired a caterer and bar staff and rented furniture. Then he invited and coordinated travel for out of town surprise guests. That evening Frank suggested that they stop by the house to celebrate their new home with a bottle of champagne but when she opened the door all their beloved family members and friends were waiting in the rotunda to witness the big moment. Natalie was surprised and bewildered; she had no idea why her family was in town or that she was about to be engaged. When Frank dropped to one knee and proposed to Natalie in middle of the crowd, she was overwhelmed with joy and the celebration began.
For their ceremony, Frank and Natalie decided on a Sunday, family-only wedding on Halloween weekend at Evelyn’s Park, a beautiful community green space in Bellaire. The couple loves to host and still wanted to include their friends in their wedding weekend, so they organized an all-day costume party on Saturday before the big day. They extended an open-door policy to their home throughout the day, inviting friends and family to enjoy pumpkin carving, yard games, music, open bar and grill, and general camaraderie. Walking along the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Johnny and Katie stopped to sit on a bench that sat off to the side atop a peninsula. Katie noticed her mom with her camera, which was not unusual as her mom is a journalism teacher and is always taking photos of the family. As they sat down Johnny asked Katie if she knew where they were, she said “a bench, duh”, as she said this Johnny began to get down on one knee. The next thing Katie heard from Johnny was “No, this is Marriage island”, as she realized what was happening, she began crying.

The couple chose to get married at their family-friends’ ranch, Rain Creek Ranch in Brady, Texas. They visit every year for Thanksgiving and knew it was the perfect place to begin their new journey together. As guests arrived, they were prompted to “pick a seat, not a side” where blue and black western blankets covered hay seating. Katie walked down the aisle in a stunning red custom gown from Renegade Bridal. Her veil was made from her first communion veil, which was made from her mother’s wedding veil. The couple celebrated with family and friends as the Texas night shone with stars.

Advice I really enjoyed having a small ceremony out of town with close family and friends and then a larger reception back in Houston a month later! Their Love Story Charmaine and Cornelius grew up in St. Louis, MO and attended middle and high school together. Although they did not date then, they did have some mutual friends. In 2015, Charmaine moved to Houston and reached out to Cornelius, who had been living there for a few years. As Charmaine says, “Cornelius was a great tour guide and things blossomed from there!”. After dating for a few years, the couple got engaged. One morning Cornelius offered to make breakfast for the two of them. Midway through breakfast he dropped down on one knee and proposed! With a mouthful of pancakes, Charmaine said yes! The couple chose to have their wedding at The Chicory, in New Orleans, LA. After their first trip together back in 2015, the couple fell in love with the city’s energy and culture. While planning their wedding, they knew they wanted it to be one big party, filled with great music and food and could not think of anywhere better than New Orleans. Charmaine and Cornelius decided on The Chicory because of the beautiful character of the building, amazing food, and prime location.

The couple had a second line parade that ended the reception. They were led by an 8-piece brass band through the warehouse district of New Orleans, where they danced and celebrated for 30 minutes.

Bride’s Advice Shop online – while I got inspiration from bridal magazines and IG I was able to find a lot of affordable alternatives just by shopping from non-bridal websites. Don’t feel pressured to have a perfect IG/Pinterest wedding and don’t compare your day to anyone else’s. Don’t ask for too many people’s opinions on what you plan to do for the wedding; it kills the element of surprise that you want guests to have. Invest in quality photography and videography. The day goes by so quickly so having photos and videos to look back on will help you relive the day over and over again. Give your phone to a family member or bridesmaid the day of so you aren’t stressed out by phone calls or text messages.

Proposal story After hiking 3,922 steps into the clouds, Allen proposed at the top of Haiku Stairs in Hawaii. Ashley and Allen’s wedding was held at Bell Tower on 34th, in Houston, TX. The couple chose Bell Tower because of their ability to cater a traditional Asian 7 course family style meal. To top off the night, Ashley and Allen surprised their guests with a choreographed first dance they learned on YouTube.

Advice DON’T LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE. No, I’m only half-serious, but really, I can’t tell you the number of times people would try to make unsolicited “suggestions.” They would tell us all the things they would do differently, [what to] not waste money on, etc. It’s easy to Mondaymorning-quarterback it when it’s over, but when it’s your wedding and you’re in the middle of planning it, only you know what little details are going to be the most meaningful and what you can live without. Also, and I think this applies to all weddings but especially large ones such as ours, if at all possible, try to find room in your budget for a coordinator. Whether you only do a day-of package or you have someone helping you from day one, it really makes a difference. Advice 0 We highly recommend doing your research on photography and videography and budgeting more money towards those vendors because those individuals are the ones who will capture everything about your special day. There is a lot that goes on during the wedding and there is a lot you won’t remember that day, but at least you will have great photos and videos to reflect upon and enjoy many years down the road.
Advice My biggest advice is to understand that in the end, it’s YOUR day. You can spend the entire engagement worried about who you’re going to upset by having this or that, who’s going to be mad they’re not invited, etc... or you can decide early on that you want your day to embody who you are as a couple. Clayton and I decided early on that although we were receiving help from family, and we were so thankful, in the end our wedding was a representation of US. We wanted people to walk in and say “Wow! I can totally see why they picked this!” Or, “That looks just like something Jackie/Clayton would love!” Also, take A LOT of pictures! Walk in front of cameras and pose for pictures, grab your photographer and make her take your picture. In the end, it will literally all be a blur! I can’t remember so many things about my wedding but the photos tell me the story all over again and I am forever grateful for my awesome photographer! Worth every penny! And lastly, branch out! Try something fun! During our fake walk-out, we used glow sticks. My husband busted one on the way out and it got on his tux. I was a little jealous he looked so cool in the dark and he asked if I wanted it on my dress. Without hesitation I said “YES!” and we have such a fun memory of that now. And the pictures turned out AWESOME! One professional cleaning later and the dress is as perfect as the day we bought it!

I’m so glad we did! We felt so comfortable working with him on our wedding day and the pictures definitely illustrate that. He did such an amazing job. We really couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful, talented photographer. • Make descriptive signs to show guests what to do and where to do it. Something like a “Date Night Jar” is very simple, but if they’ve never seen or heard of a date night jar before it might not be so cut and dry. If guests aren’t sure exactly what you want, they’ll be hesitant to participate.

Do something as a couple, to make the night memorable. My husband and I love latin music, and we are known for dancing. We had a mix of English and Spanish speakers at our wedding so our first dance was a Bachata song that has both languages in it. So when the song started we did a simple sway to the English words and when the Spanish part came on we went into the bachata movements and everyone LOVED it. You can self-soothe your fears and pain by remembering this: you are just fine and the situation is only temporary. Walk it off, shake it off, or suck your thumb, but when your beloved can’t be there for you, you don’t need to blame them for their inadequacy to be of service to your needs. If your mate doesn’t have to lift you or reassure you, when you’re feeling weak or insecure, then they get to meet you as an equal. Keep your mate from getting in the middle of your emotional process, as well, by soothing yourself amid disagreements.
3. What you are is greater than the you who is involved with another. You were you long before they showed up in your life. So, remember who that is, always. When you forget, don’t go to your partner to remind you who you are. Go to you, reclaim the best you that you’ve forgotten. The trick to avoiding romance sabotage is to be self-sufficient.
Be independent of your mate’s actions, so that you stay you. Be yourself, always. Don’t lose yourself to keep someone in your life, either, or in time you’ll lose them. If you ever wonder who you have to be, what they want you to be, you have lost your hold on you. Stop. Relearn you, before asking them whom they want of you.
4. Learn where or when you become dependent on someone else to make you feel better. When you’re in a gloomy state of mind, and you call on your mate to make you feel better, that’s just what friends do, right? Well, unfortunately, when your mate cannot improve your mood just by being present, he or she loses faith in your ability to feel better on your own. They’ll start to see you as needy, clingy, or a downer. For most people, depression is a temporary state with
many causes and triggers. For others, however, they have a habit to go into melancholy because it’s all they know how to do when dealing with immobile states of mind. Move out of depression with gratitude of thought. Begin by being grateful for all you have. Itemize these things you have and say, “thank you” deep within you, so your higher-self and higher power can hear you. There are so many who don’t have what you have. This is a way to remember the specifics of that disparity in your favor. With gratitude for the little things, you’ll not only feel better, but your better feelings follow you and lighten the mood everywhere you go.
5. Find independence from the opinions of another. Most people are mostly independent and self-reliant. Some, however, seek reliance through relationships.
Self-love means you don’t need someone else to tell you how to feel, or how you should behave. It means you take yourself seriously enough to know you are capable of being whole on your own. It also implies you don’t take yourself so seriously that you need others to do and say just the right thing, in just the right way, for you to love yourself. Your self-love ought to be independent of another’s mistakes in understanding you, too. You are not needy but you have needs. You are not pushy, though you might be pushed by unconscious conditions that you are learning to control better. You are not “too much,” even though you might feel more than most and have a dramatic way of being. These are examples of seeing yourself with love, instead of allowing someone’s opinion to force judgment on you. Self-adjustment suits the wellbeing of your relationship, without feeling attacked for just being yourself. When you are self-contained, you clear the heart for romance. You don’t need someone to agree with you, be sympathetic toward you, or over-concerned with your woe. That effort relieves them so they can focus on their inadequacies, rather than wasting precious romance on holding up your end, as well as their own.

Boil water in large pot with crab boil. Add potatoes and corn; boil until tender, about 20 minutes. Remove corn and potatoes with slotted spoon and place in warm oven. Drop live crabs into the same boiling water headfirst. Boil for 15 minutes. Place crabs, potatoes and corn lemon wedges on a platter and take pictures! After the Instagram moment, clean the crabs by popping off the big dome shell, washing out the insides and pulling off the lungs. Serve with melted butter. Little wooden mallets and cutting boards make great serving accessories and even create some fun as guests smash the shells to get to rich meat.

Beat the Texas heat with this themed wedding shower The scenery on an Alaskan cruise is breath taking, the wildlife is amazing and the experience is unforgettable. Our first port of call is Ketchican. We watch from wooden bridges in the middle of this small town as salmon work their way up stream to spawn, then die; seals splash through picking up carcasses. We dine at Annabelle’s Famous Keg and Chowder House. The place is packed; there are three cruise ships in town. As we wait in line customers leaving the restaurant assure us it’s worth the wait. And it is! We enjoy a spectacular boiled crab platter and their signature clam chowder. In Hoonah I catch a halibut, actually I catch several but can only keep one. Fortunately, my last fish of the day is the biggest I hook; the guide cleans it and sends it to Houston in a box filled with dry ice. Now, it’s my job to turn it into a memorable meal. After a little research I find only the hardiest vegetables survive the long boat ride north, so I incorporate those into my dishes. Join us for a tasty trip through Alaska.

over pan roasted fennel, topped with balsamic tomatoes and fried shallots.
Fry bacon in heavy pot or Dutch oven over medium heat until bacon is crisp. Place on paper towel and set aside. Add onions and celery to bacon grease and cook until translucent, about 10 minutes. Add garlic and continue cooking for a couple more minutes. Add potatoes, water, clam juice, Better than Bouillon, pepper and thyme. Increase heat until mixture boils, then reduce and simmer uncovered for twenty minutes.

Mix flour with one cup half and half and whisk until smooth. Add to the pot a little at a time. Bring back to boil, stirring constantly until soup thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Add clams and second cup of Half and Half. Stir to blend ingredients, turn off heat and cover. Let stand about 5 minutes. Chop bacon and parsley. Place chowder in bowls, garnish with a pinch of bacon and some parsley. Serves 6–8

Preheat oven to 150 (just to keep things warm). Season fish on both sides with salt and pepper, let stand at least 15 minutes. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a wide frying pan, add fennel in batches and cook until golden brown. Drain on paper towels, season with salt and pepper and place in oven. Toss shallots in oil and cook until golden brown and beginning to crisp. Drain on paper towel, season with salt, place in oven. Strain oil, now scented by the vegetables, to remove any remaining veggies and reserve. Wipe down pan with paper towels. Put pan back on medium- medium high heat, add ¼ cup of the scented oil. When hot, place fish in pan and cook 5 minutes. Flip and cook other side until fish begins to flake, about 5 more minutes, depending on thickness. Transfer fish to a plate and place in oven.

From the reception area, dining room, tree house (seminar area) and work out room; it’s hard not to feel as though you are floating on Lake Austin. You can even float to the spa via water taxi. It’s no accident a garden is the first thing you see as you enter the meticulously maintained grounds, herbs and vegetables are served daily in the dining room. The front garden contains a sugar kettle turned fountain from Louisiana, a nod to the heritage of one of the owners. As this garden

The Central Station Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton, has taken everything cool about an old train station, added music and art, and set Memphis’ South Main District on fire.

uilt in 1914 by the Illinois Central Railroad, the old train depot is now a 123room boutique hotel featuring mid-century architecture, Memphis-influenced music, expansive event areas and dynamic downhome dining. At one time 26 train tracks converged here; some of the original signage is still in tact. Don’t be surprised to hear a train whistle, the “City of New Orleans” still stops here on its way to Chicago. You know you’re in Memphis when you enter your room. The Central Station’s daily playlist greets you on custom designed,

The central meeting area is the bar, 8 & Sand. The house DJ spins records in a booth creatively designed from an old church organ. He selects songs from his 200K album collection and broadcasts them throughout the bar and lobby. If you don’t like the bar scene, the acoustically constructed Listening Lounge plays curated music and podcasts on specific Memphis music styles. The speakers are so good, it’s as though you are hearing the music live.
