ROAD WARRIOR TIPS FOR SUCCESS How to travel during COVID
MASK UP Even if the state/county/city does not require masks, every hotel is making masks mandatory in public areas. The Bellagio in Las Vegas even makes guests wear masks at the pool, and the “mask police” are everywhere searching for exposed mouths or noses. SeaWorld in San Antonio requires masks at all times. “No Mask, No Entry” is posted on virtually every business door. TAKE OUT AND TO-GO Most restaurants are open to 50 percent capacity, but social distancing is limiting capacity and wait times can be long. Many travelers are opting to bring a to-go order back to their rooms. SURVIVING THE LINES Lines are long. Sometimes social distancing creates illusions of long lines, but they move fast. Elevator lines are the worst. Most elevator cars are designed to carry groups of people, but are limited to one person or one family at a time. There’s no way that elevator systems can keep up with the social distancing rules. Book rooms on the first floor to bypass this inconvenience. 4

SELF-PARK AND VALET Although we have seen a few valet services, in most cases self-park reigns supreme, for now. PLAN FOR NO HOTEL MAID SERVICE In order to limit surfaces being touched, rooms are being super-sanitized before arrival. After that, you are on your own. Call if you need more towels. DISCOVER DRIVE-IN OFFERINGS Bearizona, a drive through wildlife park in Arizona, has been busy during the Covid-19 crisis. Families stay in their vehicles and don’t mix with other groups. They enjoy a great day of wildlife sightings in a safe environment. RESERVATIONS MAY BE REQUIRED As resorts and activities open safely, many limit occupancy and reservations are required for simple things, like swimming in the hotel pool. So, be sure to ask if reservations are necessary. Mount Zion National Park’s free sight-seeing shuttle system limits capacity on their buses, so now they don’t have enough buses to handle demand. You must sign up days in advance and buy your seat for one dollar. With all the proper precautions being taken, poke your head out the door! When it feels safe for you and your family—hit the road. There’s a lot of beautiful country out there.

OVID -19 IS HORRIBLE! Those who have contracted the virus are in our hearts and prayers. Everyone suffers the inconveniences of masks, lockdowns and loss of privileges. Our family decided to get out of town. We left Houston and traveled west and just kept going across deserts, over mountains and through forests and national parks. Virtual school happens in the back of our SUV; work for grown-ups is done in the passenger seat, gas stations and hotels. And we take lots of breaks to check out the scenery and history. For our road warrior readers, here are some things we are noticing in our travels.

Inside Camping in the Present Tents Dear Mom and Dad, Camp Wanakawa is really great. So is the food. I like my counselors and I’ve met a lot of neat guys. My two favorite classes are canoeing and starting a fire Indian-style with just flint, straw and napalm. Camp rules forbid having electronic gadgets such as smart phones, iPads, even stereos and satellite TVs. Luckily, our mattresses are lumpy. I seem to have left a few items at home, so could you please mail me shoes, socks, sheets and Spot. I really miss him. Your son, Motley PS: Please send a few dollars for the camp store. by Lynn Ashby
Dear Mom and Dad, Camp is still great. The food is not so terrific, but I sort of like my counselors. Maybe the reason I haven’t been getting your letters is because Camp Wanakawa’s name has been changed. My counselors say this is necessary since the U.S. Dept. of Victimization has ruled “Wanakawa” is a Comanche word for “white babies’ scalps” and thus is insulting to the Comanches. The new name is Camp Empathy. Dear Motley, we just received a letter from your counselor. He reports you are doing well in your various activities, although we didn’t know Camp Empathy taught tattooing. We are sure you will get the hang of bear wrestling soon. We have called FedEx to mail the items you requested, plus some you didn’t request like toothpaste and soap. Back at home, we miss you very much, but the family of gypsies that rented your room say you apparently never swept under the bed or emptied your fly traps, and are moving out. Dear Mom and Dad. Yesterday we visited Camp Koo-Che-Koo-Me right across the river and took them on in softball, tennis, swimming and arm wrestling. We lost in every event. Our counselors called us “a bunch of wimps” and “total losers,” which made a lot of us cry and ask for our mommy and bankie. The food is not so great but just okay. However, gruel three times a day is getting monotonous. Did I mention that Camp Koo-CheKoo-Me is a girls’ camp? Exciting news! Sheriff’s deputies came to camp and arrested a counselor. What’s a pedophile? Your son, Motley PS: Please send a few dollars to cover expenses at the camp store. Thanks. Dear Mom and Dad. Camp is getting worse. The chef changed the menu after the food riot. I’m getting

used to oatmeal for dinner. Today we went for a hike and almost everyone returned. My cabin mates have a new nickname for me, Drippy. You’d think they’d never seen a bed-wetter before. The food is much better now that we use John-Bob’s smart phone to order from Domino’s. Your son, Motley Dear Motley, glad you are having fun at camp. We just received a letter from your counselor. He says you are an “exceptional” camper for the most part. He apologized for your stay at the camp infirmary but explained they have “a first-rate snakebite clinic.” He wrote you are getting along fine with your fellow campers outside of the occasional tar and feathering. He also wrote that he can’t understand why you would need money since items purchased at the camp store are paid by the parents at the end of camp. Sorry we could not send you Spot. He was run over by a FedEx truck. Love, Mom and Dad Dear Mom and Dad. The movie last night was A Few Good Men, which explains why I was given a Code Red treatment by my cabin mates. When I complained to the counselors they just laughed and said it was “a camp initiation rite.” In our Native American lore class we were told that Sen. Elizabeth Warren is not really Pocahontas. I have had to change classes just because I showed my ability to start a fire Indian-style with flint, straw and napalm. When is camp over? Your son, Motley Dear Motley’s parents. Enclosed is a bill for $1,200 for one canoe. Dear Mom and Dad. They closed the camp mess hall due to health department violations. We were told that real campers could live off the land. I’ve lost 10 pounds. We went on an overnight hike to Lake Rancid where we put up tents, slept on the ground (fortunately, I brought my lumpy mattress so we could watch The Bachelorette,) and sat around the campfire telling stories, some about our parents. I wrote them down, and you won’t have to send me any more money. Oh, I forgot to tell you, Camp Empathy is being sued by the Wanakawa tribe, which claims it sold naming rights to the camp in exchange for 40 guns, a keg of firewater and a subscription to Netflix “to last as long as the rivers flow, the buffalo roam and the Great Spirit personally advises Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.” Dear Motley’s parents. Please come get your kid. We’ll refund the fee. Dear Mom and Dad. Camp has been over for a week. Isn’t it time you picked me up? My last letters have been returned, stamped: “Addressee Unknown—No forwarding Address.” H Ashby camps at ashby2@comcast.net.

HAT A YE AR! WHAT A YE AR! WHAT A YE AR! 2020 has been like none other we have experienced—a pandemic, losses, gains, changes, masks, heroism and an election... Our community continues to struggle with the effects of shutdowns and slowdowns, and Houstonians continue to openheartedly support the community.
by Warner Roberts Our Houston Rockets fell to the L.A. Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals and Coach Mike D’Antoni stepped down as the Rockets’ coach. Our Houston Astros saw A. J. Hinch, manager, fired for his role in the sign-stealing in past seasons. And, they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays in playoffs. Our Houston Texans also saw major changes. Bill O’Brian, Texans head coach and general manager, was fired after a 0-4 start to the season. The Houston Texans Foundation donated $100,000 to launch the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund Texas partnering with the United Way of Greater Houston and the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
It’s finally time to vote! I heard this on a podcast this morning, and I always get chill bumps when I hear the truth. The statement immediately covered me with chill bumps. The moderator was saying that if Martians landed on our planet, actually in our cities, all over the country and the world, without hesitation, we would all come together to protect our families, to safeguard our friends and even strangers alike. We would spring into action to protect everyone in our vicinity. We wouldn’t stop to ask whether they were Republican, Democrat or Independent. We wouldn’t stop to see if they were Black, White, Asian, Indian, Italian, Greek, Iranian, Palestinian, Israeli, Chinese and on and on. We would jump in the same fox holes and unite. Our human being instinct would kick in as well as our love for humanity. We would instinctively do our best to protect each other. A great analogy is 9/11 in New York City. The human being in all of us kicked in, and humans did everything they could to help each other. No questions asked. As this important election winds down and the dust settles, we must remember our best selves. We must remember how important it is to love each other, through thick and thin. Bottom line is that we are all alike, we truly are each other and belong to each other. We don’t really need a disaster to remind us and unite us. Have you done something for somebody today?
Houston Texans’ Owner a True Gift to Our City One of the most generous people who ever lived in our city is Janice Suber McNair, the co-founder and senior chair of the Houston Texans and co-founder of McNair Interests. Following her husband Robert McNair’s death in 2018, Janice became the team’s principal owner. Her son, Cal McNair, is the current CEO and day-to-day head of the franchise. But, it is Janice who represents the Texans at NFL owners meetings and other league functions. She is one of only ten female NFL team owners. Since moving to Houston in 1960, Janice has raised four children and embarked on a lifelong career of giving back to the community. She is also a

longtime breast cancer survivor. The McNairs have been champions of philanthropy for decades. Combined contributions made through The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, Houston Texans Foundation and The McNair Educational Foundation total more than a half billion dollars to charity. With the inception of the Texans in 2002, the McNairs started the Houston Texans Foundation. Since 2002, more than $35 million has been raised through annual fundraising events, disaster response programs, United Way campaigns and partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
This year, Janice and the McNair family donated $500,000 to Interfaith Ministries, Meals-on-Wheels and the Houston Food Bank. The Houston Texans Foundation donated $100,000 to launch the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund Texas partnering with the United Way of Greater Houston and the Greater Houston Community Foundation. When I asked her what was the hardest part of owning an NFL team, she said: “The hardest part about being an NFL owner is losing games. The best part about being an NFL owner is winning games.” Win or lose, Janice, you are our hero!

I’m a Believer Orange Theory’s competitive environment keeps enthusiasts coming back for more.

XERCISE WAS NEVER SOMETHING I ENJOYED. I’ve avoided friends’ invitations to go on walks for years because I’d rather hang out on the couch. Due to my mom’s health freakishness, I’ve always considered myself what many people call “skinny-fat”—being pretty slim but also having no tone or muscle. When I got to college I had freedom over my own eating. I learned the hard way that I couldn’t down all the “free” food in the cafeteria (Did you know you have to pay for that?!) and had open access to soda for the first time in my life. Hi Dr. Pepper. One year and 10 pounds later, my roommate took up running and eventually was running up to 10 miles every single day. I couldn’t believe that people actually chose to do that... just not my thing, I guess. Until it was. Over the years, I’ve heard several friends from different circles rave about Orange Theory. At first, I thought, Ugh another workout cult. I envisioned the candles and kumbaya that I had experienced and despised in other workout classes. Little did I know that I would soon be joining them as a loyal “OTF-er.”
This past January, my roommate convinced me and two other roommates to sign up for a free class at Orange Theory. She too was weird. One of those people who loved to work out. But when she showed me her transformation photos, I could see why she wanted to keep going back. When we arrived for our class, we were welcomed by the manager and walked through the Orange Theory strategy—monitors worn on your arm measure your heart rate which is projected onto screens inside the room along with the other clients. As your heart rate changes, your sector of the screen will change from blue to green, to orange, to red depending on how hard your body is working. The goal of the class is to reach at least twelve “splat points,” or minutes within the orange and red zones. Attaining this goal gives you the bonus of post-exercise oxygen consumption, referred to as “afterburn.” This means your body will burn calories at a higher rate for hours after your workout. Of course, having all of our information like splat points and burned calories on the screen made me want to do better than everyone else, especially my roommates. By the end of the class, I couldn’t believe how many calories I had burned. The class was so different from what I had expected. Initially I was scared of being the leastfit person there, but it accommodates all levels of ability. Coaches don’t yell at you, or make you share your hopes and dreams—two extremes that I was weary of in any fitness class. It was a perfect balance of challenge and feasibility. I signed up for a membership that week and started going eight times a month. Routines are developed by specialists and change every day, with a focus on either power, strength or endurance. The feeling of hitting personal bests is one that really translates into confidence and energy outside the gym. Being able to run faster and at longer distances every class is something that kept me looking forward to going back. I’ve always been the person who quits as soon as I get tired, but when my roommates and I signed up for the Orange Theory Half Marathon together (13 miles split between us, not just me!) I was so proud to be the only one who could run a full mile without stopping. As little as it seems, for me, that was something I had never been able to do before and I felt a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what I could do next. I do believe Orange Theory is a special place that delivers on its promise. To join the Orange Theory team visit orangetheory.com.—Nora Brasher

What are your best tips for proper posture while working from home? Also: What’s your take on standing desks?
I tend to take a more client-centric approach to the workstation and to combatting sedentarism. The key is to move frequently. For example, a variableheight desk can provide diversity of work posture. When taking a call, stand up and walk around while talking business. Don’t be afraid to work from the floor or other surfaces when possible. The body is built with mechanoreceptors, which are sensory signals that tell the body we have been in any position for too

Let’s face it, the past six months have been turbulent times, filled with fear, anxiety and stress, all emotional eating triggers even in the best of times. It’s no surprise that you may turn to food as a source of comfort, since there is a biological connection between food and emotions. Serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates appetite, mood and sleep, is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby affecting how you feel. But while finishing that bag of chips or pint of ice cream might ease what ails you in the moment, it’s only a temporary fix that over time can have long-lasting ramifications for your overall health. The good news is, there are ways to break the vicious cycle and get you on track. Here are some of the best, science-backed methods: Keep a food journal. Record what and how much you eat, how you’re feeling at that moment, and the time of day. After a week or two, you will be able to identify the pitfalls that are derailing your diet. Then ask yourself, is it because you are skipping meals? Or you’re not exercising regularly? Are you eating very late at night, or is your diet filled with junk food? Do you eat when you’re mad, sad or bored? It’s important to get in tune with your body and differentiate between real and emotional hunger. Eliminate processed foods and refined sugars, which can have an adverse effect on your mood by causing blood sugar levels to spike, then fall dramatically. Start with a healthy breakfast, such as a low-fat yogurt smoothie, an egg-white omelet with
veggies and whole grain toast or oatmeal topped with fruit to provide the energy you need to get you through the day. Keep “danger” foods—things that tempt you to mindlessly eat—out of house. Stock your pantry with sensible, healthy snacks, like pre-portioned bags of air-popped popcorn or trail mix, or bananas and frozen grapes. If late night eating is an issue, have a soothing cup of chamomile tea to prepare you for a restful night’s sleep instead. No need to deprive yourself, though: Factor in some dark chocolate or a glass of red wine, which, in moderation, are mood boosters too. Too much and it has the opposite effect. Instead of turning to food, blow off steam and reset with some Pilates, a long walk or meditation. Even if your studio or gym is closed, schedule a Zoom class with your favorite teacher, or check out online workouts such as Pilatesology.com, Peloton or Obé. Or treat yourself to a bubble bath or mani/pedi for a little pampering to ease your nerves. Unfortunately, food won’t magically erase your problems; you need to tackle those head on. But by making even small changes, you will notice how much better you feel and will avoid tipping the scales in the wrong direction. Consuming a healthy, balanced diet, along with regular exercise, proper hydration and plenty of sleep are the keys to not falling too far down the emotional eating rabbit hole. —Leslie Horowitz, MS, is the author of the health blog alphabitesnyc.com

PROPHETIC CITY: HOUSTON ON THE CUSP OF A CHANGING AMERICA by Stephen L. Klineberg (Released June 2, Hardcover $17.69, Kindle $10.99, amazon.com) Author Stephen Klineberg is a demographics expert, sociologist, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research and a professor at Rice University. His book draws upon over three decades of research spotlighting Houston's changing economic, demographic and cultural diversity. It provides fascinating examples of both the progress, and sometimes the shortcomings of our city described as a "microcosm for America's future." He introduces readers to a fascinating mix of diverse populations he calls "new Americans" that include: a family who moved to Houston from Mexico in the early 80s, a young man born to Indian parents in an affluent Houston suburb who becomes a doctor and a man struggling after losing his job when his company downsizes, just to name a few.
MEMORIAL by Bryan Washington (Released October 27, Hardcover $24.30, Kindle $14.99, amazon.com) Named a "most anticipated book of the season" by the Wall Street Journal, Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning and more, author Bryan Washington weaves a fascinating and funny story about family in all its strange forms. Washington was born and raised in Houston and has a MBA from Rice. His new novel revolves around the lives of Mike, a Japanese American chef at a Mexican restaurant, and Benson, a Black day care teacher, living together in Houston. When Mike finds out his estranged father is dying in Japan, he flies across the world to say goodbye and discovers revealing truths about his family and its history along the way. Meanwhile back in Houston, Mike's Japanese mother was just arriving for a visit with her son, but instead must form an immediate, hilarious and eventually meaningful relationship with Benson.
SEX AND VANITY by Kevin Kwan (Released June 30, Hardcover $11, Kindle $9.99, amazon.com) The beloved writer of the bestselling Crazy Rich Asians returns with another novel illuminating the plots and passions of the over-the-top wealthy. Author Kevin Kwan, moved from Singapore to Houston with his family when he was 11, graduated from Clear Lake High School at 16 and earned a BA in Media Studies at the University of Houston. In his newest book, a young woman named Lucie finds herself torn between two men, the WASPY fiancÊ of her family's dreams and George Zao, whom she works hard to resist. Lucie is the daughter of a blue-blooded New York father and an American-born Chinese mother. Throughout the book, readers see her struggle between two cultures challenging contrasting biases from both. Readers are treated to a first-class ticket on the characters' decadent vacations, including the island of Capri where the story begins with a lavish wedding. Later it's on to their life of the rich and famous in the Hamptons before returning home to Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. —Laura Jackson 18

Social distancing is the most effective tool we have for slowing the spread of the coronavirus. And that means staying home, if you can. Work from home. Play at home. Stay at home. If you must go out, keep your social distance—six feet, or two arm-lengths apart. Young. Elderly. In between. It’s going to take every one of us. If home really is where the heart is, listen to yours and do the life-saving thing.

As a symbol of the children who have been lost, the photographers received shoes from grieving parents. “Our purpose was to create a global symbol in the form of a photograph to show the effects of war on family and children,” said Ramos. Using the rarest precious metals on Earth: 24-karat gold, platinum and palladium, the team created the world’s largest print made of these elements. In fact, they hold the patent on this technology. Its serene atmosphere showcases our city's rich biodiversity and impressive sustainability efforts, while providing a welcomed contrast to our fast-paced metropolitan vibe. The development of this 35-million-dollar project included 25 ecological scientists—all focused on the best approach to restoring this previously degraded forest area. Stormwater management is one of their restoration goals. The park filters rainwater to improve the water quality that flows to Buffalo Bayou. Along the border of the Glades are restroom facilities and structures for outside events. The buildings mirror the style of Camp Logan, the army training camp that took place on the land during World War I. Signs have been placed in front of the buildings to educate visitors on the park's history, amenities and conservation efforts. The opening of this beautiful nature sanctuary couldn't come at a better time for Houston. With more than 100 acres of open space, including nine acres dedicated to pinicking, it's the perfect pandemic respite. During the day you can watch the water birds, frogs, toads and turtles. OU MIGHT RECALL THE BIG RESORT ON L AKE CONROE . Over the years it has had several names: Del Lago, La Torretta, La Torretta del Lago and La Torretta Lake Resort. Perhaps your high school prom was held here. My college sorority formal was, and my husband’s office holiday party. No matter what you called it, the resort on that one particular harbor on Lake Conroe is back, newly renovated and celebrity-themed. Jimmy Buffet’s brand of fun has taken over— introducing the Margaritaville Lake Resort. From 24

the moment you enter the property, you feel the welcoming relaxation of the islands. A line of surfboards marks the entrance, a larger-than-life flip flop sculpture fills the lobby, 143 palm trees have been added to the landscape and the expansive lobby windows open up to a view of the lake. You’ll find the accommodations extremely well-appointed. Coral, blue and white create the color palette with pops of yellow, orange and green for a beachy vibe. Every surface is bright, shiny and clean. Faucet handles are shaped like whales' tales. Most rooms have balconies with great water views of the one particular harbor. The

So comfortable! Each room is a suite with a door between the living and sleeping areas—perfect when some of your sailors hit the hay earlier than others. There’s also a village of lake cottages, colorful buildings along the water. They could have been picked up from Key West and dropped off here. Designed for families, the accommodations include a full-size refrigerator, sink, microwave, living room and two sleeping areas. The crown jewel of the property is the expansive lakeside waterpark which is included with your stay. The waterpark is a dream. Whether you’re looking for changes in latitude or just a respite from city life, the waterpark is a great getaway. There are several pools, splash pad, lazy river, and the It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere Swim-Up Bar. Most splash pads are reserved for kids, but this exciting pad has a giant bucket that dumps water every couple of minutes—all ages alike anxiously wait here to be cooled off and get drenched. With so many options, you can write your own version of Margaritaville. Relax in the room with the blender as you enjoy the views, hang by the pools or join in the activities. There are morning stretch classes, water aerobics, scavenger hunts, water balloon tosses (second place, baby!), hula hoop competitions and family karaoke at Parakeets Kids Club. Parrot Island Mini Golf is included and it’s a great 18-hole course complete with water features, flamingos and parrots. You should also make time for the spa with its large hammam-type steam room and special putting green area. Boat rentals and a 18-hole golf course are located on the property. Landshark Bar & Grill sits right on the beach. Sand has been imported to enhance the sublime island vibe. The views are spectacular; almost every seating area looks over the water. One of my favorite places is the deck. Watching the sunset here takes you to the Caribbean, truly. The fish and chips are beer-battered and worth the calories. Looking for the cheeseburger in paradise? The extensive burger menu includes the BBQ Burger, Mushroom Swiss Burger and the Hawaiian Luau Burger. If you dare, The King of Somewhere Hot Burger is topped with spicy pepper jam hot sauce, cheese and jalapenos. Digital Stress While digital technology has many upsides, the downside of all of those hours spent glued to our devices is the toll they take on our physical and emotional well-being. Because we get that you’re not going to give up Instagram, let alone your job, we asked the experts for their savviest strategies for minimizing the impact of screen time. by Amanda Altman

I
’LL NEVER FORGET THE TIME I FIRST DISCOVERED AND DOWNLOADED INSTAGR AM (ACTUALLY, MAKE THAT THE FIRST FEW TIMES, SINCE ADMIT TEDLY IT TOOK ME A MINUTE TO FIGURE IT OUT). But back to my point: After delving deep into the abyss of likes and hashtags, suddenly I came up for air—with an intense craving for avocado toast. I looked at the clock and realized an hour had passed by. An entire hour. I was left wondering where the time had gone, how I’d spent 60 minutes scrolling and following, barely taking a breath and certainly not taking a break. (And then I went to make that toast, obviously.) If only the effects of engaging in social media, and the vast universe of apps, emails and texting, began and ended with avocado toast. Sadly, all of that time spent in front of screens is harming our health, both physical or mental, in both small and life-threatening ways alike. No need to take my word (or your tense neck and shoulders) for it; there’s plenty of science that points to the unfortunate ramifications of too much screen time on the mind and body. To wit: In 2018, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that minimizing social media use adds up to a significant decrease in loneliness and depression. That same year, a study
in the journal Scientific Reports pointed to blue light exposure from screens killing photoreceptor cells in your eyes, which can lead to macular degeneration. Recently, research in the journal Brain Imaging and Behavior linked media multitasking (when you switch back and forth between devices, such as going from your cell to your laptop) to a greater chance of developing food cravings and a decreased inability to resist them, which could up your obesity risk. A 2009 analysis from the University of California Los Angeles found a correlation between the increase of the digi-verse and a decrease in critical thinking and analysis (though the upside was an improvement in our visual literacy). A small (19-person) study out of the Radiological Society of North America in 2017 discovered that tech– obsessed teens demonstrate an imbalance in their brains, not to mention a markedly higher level of depression, anxiety, insomnia and impulsivity, compared to the control group. Sadly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg, with studies suggesting that too much screen time might be connected to other health issues, including carpal tunnel, back and neck pain, migraines, poor sleep quality, low self-esteem, even suicide. So how do we thrive in a culture that pretty much requires us to log on to our devices? Plug into these tips and tricks from our panel of experts.

TECH EFFECT #1: Chronic stress
PHOTOS BY BIGSTOCK
L AU R I E WA R R E N : With digital technology, there’s
this constant connectivity that creates stress and affects us physically. [Stress hormones] adrenaline and cortisol now course through our bodies every day, all day. People who are under stress experience bloating, headaches and digestive problems, and our immune system goes south. We don’t even give ourselves a break from the people we do like. Say you have a friend who is emotionally needy. They used to have to make a phone call or come over; now they have 24/7 access to you. People face a hurdle in maintaining boundaries. There’s this status symbol of being
busy, and it’s taking us down at the knees. What we see in adults is that they have become more irritable, more angry—there’s less emotional equanimity and more drama. Stress is, at its core, a feeling of being a victim (“I can never get a break”), that these things are happening to me and I can’t do anything about them. This can lead to both depression and anxiety. HOW TO REBOOT WA R R E N : It’s about changing your mind-set. Set
boundaries with yourself, such as, I’m only going to check email first thing in the morning, midday and when I close up shop. In terms of time spent on social media, don’t set rigid doctrines, set guidelines. FALL 2020

more of a lifestyle and connection replacement. We’re seeing higher levels of depression, low selfesteem and ADHD, to name a few issues. HOW TO REBOOT S E N I O R M O N R O E : As human beings, we’re
TECH EFFECT #2: A disconnect in our relationships A L E X L I C K E R M A N , M D : Like anything else, the
Internet can be both good and evil. There’s a tremendous amount of educational material, but it can also be a black hole and suck you in, completely disconnecting you from life. It’s way too soon to say digital technology is causing depression, but it might be correlated.
biologically hardwired for connection. A baby, while being held, actually releases endorphins and dopamine and all these chemicals that tell us that connecting with a human being is necessary for survival and safety. With disconnection, it releases cortisol and adrenaline, which teaches our body to get back to that connection. The way that you can create empathy and connection is with face-to-face quality time. Instead of texting for an hour, plan to meet up with a friend. L I C K E R M A N : My rule of thumb is, if it’s a tough
cyber bullying, meanness and hostility. With kids, there’s the issue that they don’t even know how to question [what they read online]. The suicide rate is up 70 percent for white kids and 77 for black. L I C K E R M A N : It’s very easy to hide behind digital
media, to avoid negative emotions such as having a difficult conversation. Being anonymous [on social media] also gives people the license to say things they wouldn’t otherwise say. There’s no shame involved, which ordinarily would regulate behavior; you’re unable to see the immediate effects of your vitriolic tweet. When you’re communicating digitally, you can’t communicate sarcasm, nuance or tone and that leads to tremendous miscommunication. If you were in the room together, there would be a level of respect. WA R R E N : It’s really sad how much we see this among the adult population, people writing things they would never say out loud.
conversation to have, have it in person. And don’t ever say anything on digital media that you wouldn’t say in real life. S E N I O R M O N R O E : If you want to do a digital detox and erase your apps, go for it. But another thing we can do is to set limits on how much screen time we have per day. Become mindful of how you feel, and if your mood dips, then you know it’s too much. Maybe 10 minutes is too much, let’s try for five next time. You can set an alarm, or there are apps that track how much time you’re spending; Instagram and the iPhone have a weekly summary of the hours you’ve spent. I also think it would be great to get friends involved and start a challenge, to see who can spend the least amount of time on their devices. Powering down your phone, especially if you don’t need it, is another smart idea, say, if you’re going to spend a few hours with your kids.
TECH EFFECT #3: Weight gain
H E AT H E R S E N I O R M O N R O E : I think that digital
technology can be a great tool, but it should in no way replace authentic connection between humans. Unfortunately we’ve taken that tool as

level to avoid excessive stress and load to the head, neck and shoulders. While working, sit upright with an awareness of your body positioning; make sure to support the natural curvature of the spine, head and neck. Try to avoid prolonged periods of work and static postures by taking a break every hour or doing a few stretches.
TECH EFFECT #4: Poor sleep quality S E N I O R M O N R O E : Our minds need a wind-down period to go to sleep, and looking at a screen keeps us stimulated. When you get off your screen, you’re feeling less than, which is not a feeling that promotes melatonin production. WA R R E N : When you and I look outside, the sun has yellow light that helps to regulate our circadian rhythm. But blue light [from a screen] is a humaninvented thing and can mess with our rhythm and impair sleep.
TECH EFFECT #6: Low-back pain C A S E Y: The increase in device use can cause “creep,” or excessive stretching of the passive structures of our skeletal system, and poor mechanical loading on the joints and ligaments of the spinal column. Weakness through the glutes, core and scapular stabilizers can often lead to stiffness and poor mobility and stability during daily activities.
HOW TO REBOOT S E N I O R M O N R O E : Invest in a separate device
like an alarm clock that helps you wake up, and give yourself that 40 minutes to focus on self-care before you look at your phone. Editor’s recommendation: A quality pair of blue-light– blocking glasses can work wonders, protecting your peepers from strain and dryness, as well as headaches.
HOW TO REBOOT C A S E Y: Try postural exercises, such as squeezing
your shoulder blades together, and chin tucks to align your head and neck.
TECH EFFECT #7: Elbow, wrist and thumb tendonitis/arthritis
We love the BLUblox BluLite range, which stylishly filter out harmful blue light. Need more help winding down? The Sleep+ line also filters out green light, which helps the body produce melatonin (blublox.com).
TECH EFFECT #5: Neck issues M A RY K AT E C A S E Y, P T, D P T: The average human head weighs approximately eight to 10 pounds. With an increase in neck flexion—i.e., looking down at your device—it can feel like your head weighs 27 pounds at 15 degrees of neck flexion, 49 pounds at 45 degrees of flexion and a whopping 60 pounds with 60 degrees of flexion. This strenuous load
C A S E Y: While we don’t often think of daily activities as simple as texting or typing as the cause of our injuries [that’s not always the case]. Prolonged use of small muscles and poor positioning can often lead to mechanical overload and overuse of muscles and tendons. HOW TO REBOOT C A S E Y: To avoid tendonitis, think about proper
positioning of your wrists and elbows and maintain upright posture. If you have a flare-up of the wrist or thumb pain, wearing a brace is a great way to manage the symptoms when you are unable to eliminate or reduce your activity. H

STAY: THE HARPETH The Harpeth broke ground in 2017 and opened in 2019; the development includes a hotel, apartments and retail and takes up an entire city block. Southern hospitality is the order of the day at what is destined to become “Franklin’s living room.” Arriving at The Harpeth is like entering a Southern home. It’s welcoming, friendly and the actual check-in space looks like a living room with couches and desks instead of counters. The concierge doesn’t have a desk, he glides over the chevron flooring and comes to you. Head straight through the lobby to a large courtyard with French doors opening to private meeting spaces on either side, fountains and plush seating. The grand staircase begs for a selfie or family photo

to be taken and the gas lamps provide the perfect candle-lit glow. The hotel is nestled on the banks of the Harpeth river, right in the heart of historic downtown Franklin. Rent an electric bike from Pedego in the lobby and head out on your Civil War history tour. The hotel has several dining options. A Eurocoffee bar by day, McGavock’s Coffee Bar & Provisions also has a select amount of premium wines, local craft beers and a small selection of liquors with a strong focus on French and Italian vermouths, aperitifs and craft cocktails. It is named for GG McGavock who lived in Carnton Plantation when it became a hospital in 1864 after the Battle of Franklin. The wood on the walls is reclaimed from a nearby tobacco barn. Honest Coffee Roasters is a great place for a quick pick me up, and another true gem is The Harpeth’s 1799 Kitchen & Cocktails. Named for the year Franklin was established, the decor is created to feel like the inside of a whiskey barrel. The menu changes seasonally and focuses on farmer’s market ingredients. The full-service bar has a heavy focus on handpicked bourbon, rye and American whiskeys. They work closely with Heath Clark of H. Clark Distilleries and sampling his Rye and Malt Whiskeys is a must. The Harpeth is sure to be full of Southern charm and hospitality. There's more than 5,000 square feet of flexible event space; the property features the Riverside Ballroom and Maury Boardroom, as well as a courtyard with a grand staircase and picturesque fountains. The town of Franklin offers a beautiful glimpse into true Americana. Historic Main Street offers unique, non-chain shopping, bars, restaurants, tasting rooms and more. You can easily explore all of downtown on foot, only returning to the Harpeth to drop off your bags. H

our own coach who assessed our skill level, then found a place where our entire group could ski together. The lesson is a full day and you even eat lunch with your teacher affording extra time to continue learning and improving. The family lesson is an ideal way to see the mountain with a skilled guide, learn valuable tips and remain together on your vacation. Whether you're a skilled or novice skier, it’s pretty cool to say you have skied where Olympians have. During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, three events took place here: the Men’s and Women’s Downhill, Super G and Combined events. You can ski or snowboard in the path of Olympians on the Grizzly Downhill and Wildflower Downhill that runs from the top of the Allen Peak Tram. The start elevation of the Grizzly Downhill is 9,289 feet with a vertical drop of 2,897 feet. The initial pitch is a 74 percent slope where athletes immediately accelerate into speeds of 70–75 miles per hour. You are also

TAH HAS LONG BEEN A FAVORITE SKIING DESTINATION FOR TEX ANS; MOST HE AD TO THE BEEHIVE STATE TO SKI PARK CIT Y. Utah would like you to know there are other mountains with great ski opportunities. Thirty-three miles northeast of Park City and less than an hour from Salt Lake City airport, you’ll find the adventurous mountain Snowbasin. Most famously, Snowbasin was home to three Olympic events in 2002. But you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy this mountain—it’s perfect for skiers of all skill levels. The ski school is exceptional and easily accessible, including a private entrance for easy drop-off and pick-up. And, there's a dedicated rental area attached to the school making sign up a one-stop breeze. For families and multigenerational travelers, the private family lesson is a fantastic new option. We were matched with
free to do as we did: take the tram up, look at the steep view, and video very experienced skiers struggling before you take the tram back down. On-mountain dining and after ski relaxation have always been a source of pride for Snowbasin. Ranked number two in North America for onmountain dining by Ski Magazine, Snowbasin Resort’s reputation for culinary excellence shines through at the Cinnabar for lunch and après ski. In Snowbasin’s other dining facilities, the awardwinning chefs offer a signature burger for Earl’s Lodge, Needles Lodge and John Paul Lodge. Each season the chili served at the John Paul Lodge is selected by guests when they vote for their favorites. All the general dining areas are simply the most beautiful you’ll see at any ski resort. They are more akin to a country club setting. Whether you relax inside or out, the approachable size of Snowbasin makes it easy to locate your friends. You can also gather around the outdoor fire as the final skiers of the day finish. WHERE TO STAY: COMPASS ROSE LODGE There is no lodging adjacent to Snowbasin, but the quaint city of Huntsville is less than fifteen minutes away. New to the luxury hospitality scene, the Compass Rose Lodge is the perfect location to stage your mountain vacation.
Arriving here is similar to arriving at a friend’s house. There's no front desk, you simply locate the staff and let them know you’ve arrived. You’ll be assigned to one of the highly appointed 15 rooms. Perfect for families, the loft rooms have two king beds with two lofts above them and a ladder in between. Kids of all ages love this offering. The living room atmosphere has great seats next to the fire place where skiers unwind at the end of the day before heading out to dinner. Pop over to First Lift Coffee shop which is adjacent to the lodge. Here you’ll find not just great Joe but sweet treats too. In the evening, check for wine. If it’s there, help yourself. After a day of adventure, whether skiing, biking or hiking the paved trails of the Pineview Reservoir, spend the evening stargazing through a high-powered telescope in the HALO Observatory located in the hotel. The owner’s son, Dakota, leads private tours at 7:00 pm, 7:45 pm and 8:30 pm. Check the weather if you plan to spend a couple days to find the clearest evening. We learned about Orion, the Seven Sisters, and even took a close look at the moon. The owner’s passion for astronomy is obvious in the three telescopes and an ultra-strong camera. At the completion of the tour, you can view actual pictures taken while you were gazing. H

San Antonio is Open
Socially distant, yet close to home. Photos and story by Laurette M. Veres
I
T ’S THE PERFECT TIME FOR A ROAD TRIP. The most popular destination in Texas has often been San Antonio and Alamo City's locals are rolling out Texas-sized safety measures to put you at ease.
OPPOSITE PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: A BALCONY VIEW
FROM THE WESTIN OVERLOOKING THE RIVER WALK; THE WESTIN IS ON THE QUIETER SIDE OF THE RIVER; A COUPLE POSING FOR PHOTOS ON MARRIAGE ISLAND; THE LUXE ACCOMODATIONS AT THE WESTIN.

WHERE TO STAY The River Walk is the second most popular attraction in San Antonio. (The Alamo ranks number one.) When selecting a hotel, proximity to the River Walk is always essential. The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio (westinriverwalksanantonio.com) meets all the right criteria for a destination river front property. It’s located on the quiet side of the river, which allows for tranquility on your patio, yet you are steps from the bustling restaurant and bar scene. Several balconies on the second floor overlook the River Walk, a serene setting highlighted by brightly lit tour boats. Just to the left, as you head to the action, you’ll pass the infamous Marriage Island. Expect to see weddings here every day of the week. As you arrive at the hotel, remember masks are mandatory in all public areas and only two people can be on an elevator. We were pleased to still see a bustling and active lobby, and even two brides taking photos on the grounds. When you enter your room, look for the sticker taped to the doorjamb “cleaned and sealed for your protection”. This is your assurance the room is ready for you. The plush accommodations feature pillowtop mattresses and marble bathrooms. Brown and gold tones create a relaxing vibe and spending time on your balcony looking out over the River Walk is the best part. Beat the heat at the Westin’s pool where there's always a party, just remember reservations are required to ensure social distancing.
OUTDOOR EXPLORATION The San Antonio Botanical Garden (sabot.org) is a welcome respite from the Covid-19 Pandemic. You can easily spend half a day at this treasure trove of local flora and fauna. Don’t miss the vegetable and herb garden, home to the chef program for healthy eating. Cooking classes have been temporarily converted to an online format, but when they return to the property again, amateur cooks are welcome to collect fresh herbs right from the garden. The family adventure garden is the perfect place to keep your distance while the children run and play. Kids love the teepees, rolling hills, and the splash pad. Not your ordinary splash pad, it looks like a real Texas river replete with boulders and waterfalls. For your safety, a Botanical Garden representative monitors the splash pad activities and limits the capacity to 20, which leaves plenty of time to explore the rest of the outdoor beauty. The most notable features are the five glass conservatory buildings. Each is a tribute to a local plant; the fern grotto looks like a plant scene from Jurassic Park. Another explains life in the desert. Photographers flock to this area for some of the best photo ops in town. Keep walking and you’ll see San Antonio’s first water reservoir from 1877, now an amphitheater. Take a short jog up a hill to one of the highest points inside the loop to take in great skyline views. To get a true picture of Texas’ past, the native Texas area has pioneer homes on property highlighting three areas: South Texas, the Hill Country and the Piney Woods. The setting is remarkable and the landscapes change to mimic the locations. The temperature really does go down as you stroll the Piney Woods. Over 300 species of birds have been sited at

South Texas’ birding area. The limestone in the hill country depicts the importance of aquifers to the residents. The Auld Home shows visitors a charming homesite from the 1800s where seven children were raised. To learn more about the types of landscaping that grow well in San Antonio, the cottage gardening area features Spanish courtyards and more. Walk through the Wisteria Arbor, or take a seat on a bench and enjoy the shade as you make your way to the great big lawn and the soothing Japanese Garden. The large lawn also plays host to children’s story times, with social distancing, of course. INDOOR LEARNING San Antonio’s oldest museum, The Witte Museum (wittemuseum.org) focuses on the history of San Antonio, from the dinosaurs all the way up to the beautiful gowns of the Fiesta celebration. Before you enter, note the dinosaur that properly wears a dinosaur-sized mask. You’ll be greeted with an explanation of the slight changes the museum has made as they welcome the new normal. Typically, it's an interactive museum, but today each guest receives a stylus to press the buttons on the exhibits to learn about the Comanche Hunters, ranchers and oilmen from Texas’ past. Did you know Texas is the only state in the Union to have Farm to Market roads? They are the result of a 1949 bill guaranteeing funding for the roads that help farmers bring their crops to town. Dinosaur Gallery, the first permanent dinosaur gallery in the 90-year history of the Witte. You will explore the animals that lived here more than 110 million years ago. SIX FLAGS FIESTA TEXAS You’ll feel great visiting this amusement park where every activity is outdoors. Large entry tents now contain walkthrough thermometers, guests are asked to wash their hands frequently and masks are mandatory throughout the park. When is the last time you remember your kids being the only kids on the merry-go-round? In many cases, you’ll be the only family on a ride. Feel secure knowing the rides close often for sterilizing. Six Flags is committed to the following six healthy axioms:
1. WEAR YOUR MASK. 2. WASH YOUR HANDS. 3. COVER YOUR COUGH. 4. KEEP YOUR SPACE. 5. SANITIZE OFTEN. 6. HAVE FUN.
And, no, your mask does not come off while riding a roller coaster! SEAWORLD AND AQUATICA My first visit to SeaWorld (seaworld.com) was in its inaugural year, 1988. At that time we saw a show or two and enjoyed a few exhibits. But this brand has grown and changed so much since the early
days. Most notably the roller coasters. Educational shows in the Ocean Discovery area teach about dolphins and beluga whales. As SeaWorld fans across the world will attest, the stars of the park are the killer whales who put on a spectacular show and get most of the audience wet. Speaking of the audience, SeaWorld does a great job distancing groups and dismisses by section to keep social distancing practices. As luck would have it, A Taste of Seven Seas food event was taking place during my recent SeaWorld trip. Culinary adventures from France, Germany, Greece and Italy popped up around the park. We enjoyed crepes while in France, braised beef in Germany, shrimp flatbread in Italy and a lamb burger in Greece. Chefs were on hand to prepare some of the best amusement park fare I’ve ever tasted. A ticket to SeaWorld also includes the waterpark Aquatica so plan accordingly. There are cabanas, a wave beach, lazy river and some seriously fierce water slides. The Tonga Twister has four slides, two are open air and two are enclosed. The enclosed rides are a thrill for your senses as flowers float by, music blasts through the speakers and colors change rapidly. DRIVE THROUGH ZOO The San Antonio Zoo (sazoo.org) offers Drive Thru Zoo, a one-of-a- kind experience where families can see the zoo while in the comfort, safety and security of their own vehicle. The experience includes a guided educational audio tour.
WHERE TO EAT History and taste converge on E. Houston Street just minutes from the Westin at La Panaderia (lapanaderia.com). This historic building is home to one of the freshest and most popular pastries in town, created by Mexico City-raised owners. Trip Advisor calls this the number one bakery out of more than 50, and we can see why. The most popular lunch item is the Mexican Cubana Torta bursting with cilantro mayo, chipotle mustard, ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, kielbasa sausage and pickles. The pride and joy, the Tequila-Almond Croissant, was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Perfectly flaky, with an almond filling and toasted almonds on top, it reminds you of everything great. Think flaky croissant meets stuffed donut, meets delicious fruit pastry. For dinner, head over to the Food Hall at the Pearl. As a former brewery operating from 1883 to 2001, Pearl is now a hotel, living and recreational area just outside downtown. The Food Hall is all to-go service and offers plenty of seating on the lawn. Mi Roti serves bowls and wraps of authentic Caribbean cuisine. For this build-your-own concept, we selected the Jerk chicken, coconut rice, and a choice of 12 toppings. The bowl was messy, but deliciously bursting with flavor. The Pearl is located on the Riparian portion of the River Walk, just a casual and beautiful stroll from home sweet home, The Westin, Riverwalk San Antonio. H

JOSE ORIHEULA Personal Injury
SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS AN ATTORNEY SPECIALIZING IN PERSONAL INJURY LAW. “Always be accessible to the client,” he says. “The client doesn’t hire your secretary—they hire you.” Making sure that the client is able to reach him is the foundation of his law practice. “Whenever a client calls me, it’s usually with bad news. I find that by making myself available, it eases their stress and reassures them that the wheels are in motion.” Not surprisingly, Orihuela, a Houston native, established his firm, Orihuela & Associates, out of a desire to assist others in need. “I became an attorney to help people. I primarily focus on people in the Latino community who are unaware of their rights. I am known to take the odd job every once in a while in order to help someone who’s in a tough spot,” says Orihuela, who’s fluent in both English and Spanish. Although Orihuela & Associates is a boutique firm, with a small, caring staff, the lawyers don’t shy from routinely taking on multimillion-dollar cases and large companies in the courtroom. “My job is to zealously represent my client. From day one, I prepare as if each of my cases will be going to trial. It lets the other side know that we are willing to go the distance, and that we will not be settling for pennies on the dollar. ” Orihuela works closely with victims and their families of car wrecks, truck wrecks, workplace accidents, refinery accidents,
premise defects and other catastrophic injuries. He prides himself on not only being supportive and a good listener, but on fighting for the rights of his every client. Orihuela is known for resolving cases as quickly and efficiently as possible, and never pushing anything—no matter how small it may seem to others—to the side. There’s no shortage of clients who will attest to these facts: “He treated me like a person—not just another file.” “Jose is tremendous. He gave us 100 percent from day one. He was there in a time of need. He’s compassionate and kind; my wife and I would recommend him in a heart beat.” “He helped me every step of the way—helped with doctors, always answered my phone calls and helped resolve my case in a fair manner.” “He has provided a level of service that goes above and beyond most other law firms.” After receiving his bachelor’s in economics from Trinity University in San Antonio, Orihuela was awarded a full scholarship to Northern Illinois College of Law. Today, his thriving practice continues to grow at a rapid pace. This is a direct result of Orihuela taking so much pride in being thorough and paying attention to every detail so his clients don’t have to. “Knowing I’m doing the job right is my favorite part of being an attorney. For me, it’s about making sure no stone is left unturned. At the end of the day, that is what will get you the best results.”

ROBERT WOODS
Personal Injury–Criminal AS A RETIRED POLICE LIEUTENANT AND A GRADUATE OF THE FBI NATIONAL ACADEMY,
attorney Robert Woods of Woods Law Firm has an advantage over most criminal and personal injury attorneys. With more than 20 years of experience in investigation and law enforcement, he knows how to build and defend cases. “I’ve dedicated my life to protecting Texans and upholding the law. As your attorney, I will investigate and process your case with the utmost integrity and zeal,” says Woods. The Woods Law Firm represents individuals and families facing personal-injury crises as well as those facing criminal charges. The primary focus of the firm has been representing victims injured in 18-wheeler, auto and motorcycle accidents, DUI accidents, commercial vehicle accidents and animal bites and attacks. Woods is wellknown among his peers for his quick recognition of liability and aggressive pursuit of justice. “At the Woods Law Firm, you get personal attention regarding your case. Our firm is small enough to give you the personal attention you deserve, but large enough to go against the big insurance companies,” explains Woods. Attorney Woods holds a degree in criminal justice from Sam Houston University and a law degree from South Texas College of Law. WOODS LAW FIRM, PC 2016 Main St., Ste. 111 Houston, TX 77002

LARRY CHAMBERLIN Family Law & Mediation
GRIEF, LIKE PHYSICAL PAIN, HAS A PURPOSE: SOME PROBLEM NEEDS HEALING, JUST LIKE A BROKEN ARM. Your response

counts! Once the pain signal is received it’s served its purpose and can be harmful by keeping you from getting treatment. Grief is mental pain such as the agony of losing a long-term partner in divorce. Grief lets you know healing is needed. Broken hearts are no less important than broken arms. Seek counseling or at least friends and family who empathize but offer support. Focus on where you want to be after the divorce. What steps will get you there? Then ask: What needs
to be done next? Do whatever that step is and ask it again. Focus on the goal, not the injury. Instead of living in the past you will be making your new future. Larry Chamberlin earned his Juris Doctor from Tulane Law School, and was elected to the National Order of Barristers in 1988. He received an M.A. in International Business Management at UT Dallas. He is Board Certified in Family Law, a member of Mensa and in 2006, while in a Juvenile Forensic Psychology Masters program, he was elected to Psi Chi, the prestigious psychology honor society.

litigation and child custody to high-asset property division and more, the firm provides exceptional service and insight to each and every client. “From the first time I stepped into a family courtroom, my role as a family law attorney was clarified. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else with my life. Few people get the opportunity to do what they love every day, and I am blessed in being able to pursue my dreams as an advocate,” says Ramos, who’s Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization with more than 16 years of experience. Together with her seasoned associates, Ramos is a firm believer in continuing education. To that end, the team is active in various legal organizations, with Ramos maintaining membership in the Texas Bar College, which warrants four times the education requirement for all attorneys. Membership is an honor bestowed to less than 10 percent of Texas attorneys.

YOU ALSO HAVE TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS,” argues Brian Ayson, the founder of Ayson Law Firm. “We are attorneys and counselors. Fighting for your clients while helping them through a difficult time is what attorneys should strive for.” It is Ayson’s devotion to his clients, combined with his tenacity in the courtroom, that has catapulted the firm into one of the city’s up-and-coming practices for personal injury and criminal defense. The firm handles criminal cases, ranging from DWI to murder, and personal injury matters, including automobile and 18-wheeler accidents. For Ayson, no case is too big—or too small. “I have helped many people charged with a variety of misdemeanor and felony cases,” he says. Not surprisingly, Ayson holds a Superb rating on Avvo, and has a peer-review rating of 4.5/5 on Martindale Law Directory.

Raising seven-year-old twins is a blast. Teaching them to play sports, do schoolwork and clean their room are all rewarding activities. We also want them to eat right and enjoy a wide variety of culinary delights, so at a young age we introduced Gourmet Night. Every couple of weeks we fix them something “fancy” they’ve never eaten before. They might love it or hate it, eat it or choose not to, but whatever is served is dinner. Over time they have developed a palate for some good stuff. Steaks, salmon, roasted bone marrow and crab are their favorites, along with many fresh vegetables—even brussels sprouts! In fact, if you let them shop for Gourmet Night, they will select everything just mentioned. It sounds extravagant, but remember they’re seven. They can only eat a few bites of each dish so a small steak, a crab leg and a piece of salmon go a long way for them. Mom and Dad are the only budget busters in the house. The real challenge is finding new, interesting things for them to try and keep them engaged. We are getting together for an upscale evening with friends amid the Covid-19 lockdown. Our hostess, Deborah Elias of Elias Events, is showcasing her beautiful home, serving and tableware and I agree to cook the main course. 72

As the plan is developing and the party is getting close, they push for a menu. Under duress I suggest, “How about doing Gourmet Night?” They have no idea what Gourmet Night is, but think it sounds great. So, I ask the twins what they want for a fancy dinner—that’s what I serve my friends. The following meal serves a Covid-19 safe party of eight. —Tom Flynn

Make the salmon: Heat a cast iron pan over a hot flame until smoking hot. You may want to use two pans so you have room to flip the fish. Add the butter and once melted, add the salmon. Cook for 3 minutes, flip and then place the hot pan in the oven for 3 minutes. Remove the salmon from the pan, cover and let rest for a few minutes.

When Laurette asked me to be a guest at the magazine photoshoot, I was excited about being included, but a part of me really wanted to have a dinner party and show off some of my hostess skills. So, I asked, well cajoled, her and Tom into having the event at my house. I am pretty sure Tom was a little nervous about cooking at my house (especially when I told him I had a stocked kitchen and of course the first thing he asked for I didn’t have). I couldn’t wait to show off my aunt’s china and my grandmother's glassware and silverware. I had the best time putting together a pretty tablescape. I was very excited about the plans and when I asked what the salad and dessert would be, he said “Whatever you are planning on doing.” I decided that both items were a must for a complete dinner party. I am a very informal “chef”, so my recipes are a little more relaxed. When the guests arrived, I treated them to the Ginger Splash cocktail served in delicate crystal flutes. For the salad, I did a very pretty Spicy Basil Watermelon Salad. —Debbie Elias
THE GINGER SPLASH This huge hit and refreshing drink was made of equal parts Domaine de Canton Ginger Liquer and sparkling wine with a lemon zest and raspberry for garnish. SPICY BASIL WATERMELON SALAD 2 TABLESPOONS OLIVE OIL 2 TABLESPOONS BALSAMIC VINEGAR 2 DASHES TAJIN CLASICO SEASONING ½ SEEDLESS WATERMELON, CUBED 12 GRAPE TOMATOES, HALVED 2 CUCUMBERS, PEELED AND CUBED SMALL BUNCH SPICY BASIL, JULIENNED SMALL HANDFUL MINCED THYME AND MINT 8 OUNCES CRUMBLED FETA SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE 1. Whisk together the oil, vinegar and seasoning in a pretty serving bowl. 2. Add the remaining ingredients and gently toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper and serve. PISTACHIO ICE CREAM DREAM In a springform pan, lined with crumbled Oreo cookies (or in my case, gluten free cookies but anything with cream in the middle will do nicely), but remember to scoop out the filling and discard (or save for devouring later). Scoop and press slightly melted Pistachio ice cream into the springform, filling it almost to the top. Whip up some fresh whip cream (please not readymade) and spread across the top. Drizzle dark chocolate and caramel on top. Scatter some fresh pistachios on top and you have yourself a beautiful and tasty dessert.

you'll want to use to get every last delicious drop of the sauce on the plate. Another must-try is the baked to perfection Oysters Montrose. Six fresh-shucked oysters are laced with garlic butter, topped with jumbo lump crab, breadcrumbs, Parmesan and spices—simply delectable. Love oyster shooters? We recommend the Buffalo Bayou, consisting of a fresh-shucked oyster layered with cocktail sauce, Worcestershire, hot sauce, horseradish and freshly squeezed lemon juice then finished with Tito’s vodka. Or, try the Boca Chica, fresh-shucked oysters—would you expect anything else?—covered with red and green bell peppers, cilantro, shallots and lime juice, then topped with Herradura Silver tequila. Another great appetizer is the Crab Danton, jumbo lump crab tossed in an aromatic Rémoulade sauce, topped with chives and served with crackers, tomato slices and pickled okra—simply to die for. On the lighter side, Eugenes’ offers a variety of salads. We suggest Bailey’s Salmon Salad, which is

YLE TE AS GREW UP IN HOUSTON KNOWING THAT TEX AS GULF COAST CUISINE WAS THE MOST DELICIOUS, WILD - CAUGHT SE AFOOD IN THE WORLD. His friends and family encouraged him to follow his dream to open a restaurant serving the finest authentic Gulf Coast dishes and Danton’s Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen was born. The restaurant was a big hit from the start and last year when a new and larger neighborhood location became available, Kyle and his family knew this opportunity was too good to pass up. With that move, Eugene’s Gulf Coast Cuisine was born. Eugene’s is affectionately named in honor of Kyle’s father, Dr. Merwin Eugene Teas, the man who inspired it all. The Oysters Kyle is a must try when visiting the Oyster Bar, which consists of six oysters sautéed in lemon garlic butter with green onions, herbs and spices. It's served with Parmesan bread that

Another selection is Kyle’s Crab Salad, romaine and baby spinach are tossed in a garlic remoulade and generously topped with bacon, tomatoes, jumbo lump crab and fried sweet potato strings. For entrees, we suggest the Seafood Courtbouillon. It’s an assortment of fresh fish, oysters, shrimp, green onion, bell pepper, celery and garlic sautéed in a rich spicy roux-based sauce. Another entree that our group really enjoyed was the Surf and Turf (Gulf Coast Style)—they know what they’re doing! An eight-ounce certified Angus beef filet topped with Oyster or Shrimp Kyle, four large grilled or fried shrimp or jumbo lump crab sauté, served with a large twiced-baked potato. Another signature dish sure to please is the Shrimp and Grits Montrose, large Gulf shrimp wrapped in bacon served over roasted poblano cheese grits with a side of steamed broccoli. They also serve
a line-up of fresh seafood po-boys, a crab cake burger and check out the Teas’ family version of a grilled cheese sandwich. Grilled or fried chicken served on a toasted bun with American cheese, aptly named, The Teas Special. Lastly, the two standout desserts for us were the White Chocolate Bread Pudding (toasted French bread made with heavy cream, eggs and white chocolate, topped with a homemade white chocolate sauce) and Jonny’s Dessert (a combination of cheesecake and key lime pie). Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine has semiprivate and private dining rooms and offers all the amenities you need for business meetings, private happy hours, celebrations, wedding receptions, along with personal planning assistance to create a one-of-a-kind celebration.
