MODERN MOTIVATIONS
T
HE HYAT T REGENCY HOUSTON HAS JUST UNDERGONE AN EXCITING MULTI-MILLIONDOLL AR RENOVATION. Our writer, a native Houstonian, views this building with the Spindletop restaurant atop as a downtown landmark (page 22). This iconic destination represents almost 50 years of memories for locals, travelers and business folk. I too have fond memories of the building. When I started my event promotion business, it was this hotel that took a chance on me and my new ideas. I rented the exhibit hall and began to sell exhibit space to international telecommunications companies. I still recall the homemade potato chips my salesperson shared with me. The annual New Year’s Eve party complete with balloon drop is legendary and I’ve always enjoyed supporting Houston Children’s Charity
at this venue. I’ve also had many an international traveler add the Spindletop to their list of Houston must do’s. I love that the decor was influenced by expressionist artist Mark Rothko, designer of the Rothko Chapel in Montrose. The blue-grey accent wall in the hotel rooms creates a calming aesthetic that blends with the sleek black floor tiles to help you stay relaxed and tranquil during your stay. Both the Hyatt and The Rothko Chapel turned 50 years old and recently renovated. As the county continues to open safely, I hope you’ll take some time to revisit and enjoy these engaging and influential Houston institutions.
I too have fond memories of the building. When I started my event promotion business, it was this hotel who took a chance on me and my new ideas.

Next up was an Italian adventure starring Sharon and John cooking scrumptious spaghetti and meatballs, calamari and octopus carpaccio. So fancy, and we sang Italian songs. Halloween was amazing—with witches, ghosts and flowers in pumpkins centerpieces. Scott Evans and Jeff Henry were special guests with Scott bringing pumpkin cupcakes for dessert. Bob picked up fried chicken in boxes for dinner. Scary! For our Thanksgiving celebration, I made an appetizer of a turkey made of goat cheese, feathers from red bell pepper and olive eyes. (I was proud.) We served turkey and dressing from Cleburn’s cafeteria. Our “Godfather Wedding” event was decorated with all white table linens and white roses as centerpieces. Chris found tiny water guns as favors, and we offered a dinner nobody could refuse. We always served red and white wine, with other options also always available. We had a great Christmas celebration combined with Ray’s December birthday. The

HO COULD HAVE EVER DRE AMED THAT WE WOULD ENCOUNTER AND EXPERIENCE ANY THING AKIN TO THE DRE ADED COVID -19 PANDEMIC? Well, friends, we did, and how we handled includes very individualized scenarios. I was lucky to continue to work from home on the computer and by the way of Zooming. Zoom became the operative word for many. My life changed drastically in that I didn’t go out— period—except to my back porch patio. Though we have lived in this house for many years, my husband, Bob, and I never sat out there until COVID. But then we went out at about 5:30 to 6:30 every day, and I waved at all the people who walked by. Many waved back and had no idea who we were. It was a lot of fun for me, but a little embarrassing for Bob. After my husband and son, Cliff, measured off a full 8 feet to distance tables and chairs (not satisfied with 6), I was allowed to have a few friends over, starting with one or two at a time. Of course, Cliff and Angie, who live down the street, were here all the time. Son Bob and wife, Kristin, from Austin visited. Nieces, Kelly and Paula also came often. (If I try to name all the friends who came by, I’ll forget someone.) Then, things evolved into having six friends per visit at around 6:00, during the first of which I ordered 10 varieties of pizzas. By the second one, my friend Chris Kase and I had began to decorate as though we were going to a gala. All red and black Chinese decor and a great dinner from Cafe Ginger was amazing. Our longtime friend, and great musician, Ray Rogers joined us and set up his equipment for singalongs. Charity Yarborough and Wally Cox and Sharon Abercia and husband John Evans rounded out our group. Charity and Wally brought Mexican food from Escalante’s for our next “Ole” event. Remember that we decorated for each event, mostly from my attic, and this time we found sarapes, Mexican straw hats and colorful serving pieces. Add tequila, and it’s a party. We later took a democratic vote to name our group, and after much discussion, we settled on PPP—the Pandemic Patio Posse.
Christmas trees, Santas and Christmas Carols were beautiful, and Chris and Ray brought a luscious dinner from Post Oak Grill. The first celebration of 2021 was in January for Chris’ birthday. Hearts came out for this friend who has a heart of gold. The legendary Moehler’s bakery made a beautiful heart-shaped cake for her! In March this year, we celebrated the wedding of our PPP members, Charity and Wally. Chris outdid herself by wrapping the patio columns with wide pink ribbon, embellished with mammoth roses. We added pink table linens, pink roses and twin wedding cakes from Moehler’s bakery. What a great champagne celebration. We are planning a PPP reunion soon, and I believe it is going to be a “rumble in the jungle” event in Cliff and Angie’s tiki hut. A huge first-time happening for me last November was hosting a virtual event, The Wonderful World of the Women of Substance benefiting the Mission of Yahweh. My co-hosts were Ernie Manouse of Channel 8, Kristina Somerville, Chair and Paul-David Van Atta, Creator and Producer. We were so very grateful to raise $400,000 to further the programs for the homeless women and children at The Mission. I asked Janice McNair and the Houston Texans to become our premier sponsor in order to provide a new playground for the children. On April 6 last month, ground was broken for this wonderful new addition. Attending were Janelle and Greg Reid of the Reid Family Foundation, who are also major donors to the playground. Special guest was Houston Texans legend, Chester Pitts. One of my first luncheon outings was for the birthday celebration of Alicia Smith at Turner’s
with Deborah Duncan, Kim Moody, Sylvia Forsythe and Anne Carl. Beautiful! For my first nighttime outing adventure, I went with the PPP to Birraporetti’s downtown to listen to Ray who sings there every Thursday and Friday. Long-time Houstonians remember Ray from when he had the Bojangles Club in downtown Houston. He also toured with Liza Minnelli. When he and the late Jonni Hartman were married, they moved to Los Angeles and on to Nashville where he worked with Clint Black and Lisa Hartman. My second outing at night came with a visit to a most fantastic Indian restaurant, Musaafer in the Galleria, as the guest of friends Leela and Nat Krishnamurthy. It would take this full page to describe this adventure in dining and the amazing decor of the restaurant! The world mourned with Queen Elizabeth as she laid to rest her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. I mention this because I was fortunate enough to introduce the Queen at a gathering in front of the City Hall Reflection Pool. I was given instructions on how to greet and introduce her. A very handsome, stately man, Prince Philip, stood just behind her. And, as you would imagine, she was most gracious. I am so very grateful that my family and friends are well. I am grateful that life is slowly getting better; people are getting vaccinations, going back to real places of business. I am grateful if people remember to be thoughtful and wear masks or keep spacing if it seems appropriate. Kindness and consideration work. Have you done something good for somebody today? SUMMER 2021

UG AR IS BAD—WE GET IT. But calorie-free sweeteners like sucralose (Splenda), aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low), stevia and sugar alcohols (such as xylitol and modified sugar molecules) may be just as bad. A study in the American Journal of Public Health found that overweight and obese people who consumed
diet beverages took in 88 to 194 more calories per day compared to those who didn’t. “This may be because calorie-free sweeteners activate reward centers in the brain and disrupt appetite control, leading to increased food intake,” according to lead researcher Sara N. Bleich, PhD, an associate professor at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. So if you drink a diet soda, you may be more likely to
give yourself permission to splurge on a chocolate croissant or a Three Musketeers bar later on. What’s more, most faux sugars taste even sweeter than the real thing, so they may simply cultivate a preference for overly sweet foods. So the best strategy for subduing a sabersized sweet tooth is to reduce your intake of all types of sweeteners. —Matthew Kadey, MS, RD

AN’ T EVEN LOOK AT A NEEDLE WITHOUT WINCING? Try adding some heart-revving cardio to your routine, says a recent study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise; it just might increase your pain tolerance. Researchers at the University of New South Wales and Neuroscience Research Australia recruited 12 healthy adults motivated to begin an exercise program and another 12 who had no interest in hitting the gym. The first group was instructed to exercise on the stationary bike for 30 minutes at a moderate-to-vigorous pace, three times per week, for six weeks. After the six-week training period, both groups returned for further testing of their pain tolerances.
By using a probe to apply pressure to the skin, researchers discovered that the volunteers in the exercising group displayed an increase in pain tolerance—or being able to endure pain for longer—although their pain threshold did not change. The control group, not surprisingly, had no changes in pain tolerance. During a challenging workout, the body releases natural substances, like endorphins, which help to decrease pain levels. Called exercise-induced hypoalgesia, these endorphins typically carry the body through a workout and also may contribute to a decrease in pain for up to 30 minutes after, reason the study authors. YOUR DIET
EAT SMART. Feeling satisfied with your food is key. Make the most of your meals by including at least two components, with a balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats, and a beverage—anything but water—to extend the taste. Have three bites of a sweet or mint to finish. 12
HTEXAS.COM
ESTABLISH EATING RITUALS. Improve your digestion by creating habits before, during and after meals. Try these to help you slow down, increase mindfulness and prevent overeating: Wash your hands before you eat; count bites and chew well during meals; brush your teeth afterward.
COUNT YOUR BITES. Since your stomach can’t count calories— it only detects volume—reduce your eating to 15 to 25 bites per meal. RETRAIN YOUR PALATE. Instead of choosing foods by their nutrition facts—calories, fat grams, etc.—select your fare by the way it goes together. Let taste, texture and mouthfeel be your guide, and try to stimulate more than one of the five tastes (salty, sour, sweet, bitter and umami). This will help you to feel
content, and prevent overeating and binging later on. NIX THE NIBBLES. This form of eating overworks the GI tract, say researchers. Instead of snacking, space meals at fourhour intervals. WATER DOWN YOUR DRINKING. Excessive drinking of water throughout the day overworks the kidneys and leads to excess outflow—that means more toilet flushing! Drink as needed for thirst. —Amanda Altman

HURRICANE SEASON: THE UNFORGETTABLE STORY OF THE 2017 HOUSTON ASTROS AND THE RESILIENCE OF A CITY by Joe Holley (Hardcover, $27.00; bookpeople.com) There isn’t a single Houstonian who wasn’t inspired by the Astros’ 2017 World Series win, particularly since it came immediately after Hurricane Harvey, the devastating storm that left the city underwater for several days. The flood waters left $200 billion in damages behind, and Houston’s morale in tatters. But nine weeks later, the Astros' fought and won their firstever World Series victory, and Bayou City’s motto, “Houston Strong,” was everywhere. With this much-needed boost, the city’s faith was revitalized. Regardless of team affinity or city of residence, every single American will be inspired by this story of hardship overcome.
SANPAKU by Kate Gavino (Hardcover, $16.50; amazon.com) When her beloved grandmother dies, Marcine, a 12-year-old Filipino-American girl, becomes fascinated with the Japanese concept of sanpaku—the belief that if the whites of one’s eyes are visible beneath the iris, tragedy will strike. Of course, her grandmother was afflicted with this phenomenon and regaled Marcine with stories of famous people who suffered from it while alive, feeding her superstition. Set in 1995, this coming-of-age, black-and-white graphic novel will resonate with young adults as they struggle to navigate puberty, providing a unique world view—and plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor—for any teen to enjoy.
WOLF BOYS: TWO AMERICAN TEENAGERS AND MEXICO’S MOST DANGEROUS DRUG CARTEL by Dan Slater (Hardcover, $17.86; amazon.com) Told in Dan Slater’s journalistic style, Wolf Boys uncovers the inner lives of the “foot soldiers” of the Mexican drug cartel. Slater follows two Mexican-American boys from Laredo, Texas, as they become inextricably involved in a deadly drug war on the TexasMexico border. Both Gabriel Cardona and Robert Garcia are children of Mexican immigrants. As childhood friends, they grew up where extreme poverty and the billion-dollar illegal drug trade met and clashed, often with devastating results. Their similarities end there. While Garcia becomes a homicide detective in hot pursuit of the cartel, Cardona is trained as an assassin for Los Zetas, rising in the ranks of the drug underworld. As gut-wrenching as it is thrilling, Wolf Boys is a powerful cautionary tale and a rare glimpse into a world of desperation and survivalism.
PRINCESS TRULY IN I AM TRULY by Kelly Greenawalt, illustrated by Amariah Rauscher (Hardcover, $14.65; amazon.com) The books we read as children can impact the adults we become, and Houston author Kelly Greenawalt gets it. The adoptive mother of Calista and Kaia, Greenawalt saw a void in children’s books that empower little girls between the ages of three and eight—particularly little girls of color—so she wrote her own. Beautifully illustrated with Amariah Rauscher’s whimsical artwork, I Am Truly is about a princess who is everything and anything she sets her mind to—beautiful, brave, confident and smart. The picture book’s positive message is clearly conveyed through its words and images, not only reassuring little girls that they can accomplish major feats like becoming astronauts or engineers, but also smaller goals, such as learning to swim and tie their shoes. No task is too small or too big for Princess Truly, who is every little girl in the world.
SWABBED AND FOUND by Frank Billingsley (Hardcover, $17.76; amazon.com) If you’ve lived in Houston for the past 20 years, you’ll recognize Frank Billingsley’s warm smile from KPRC 2’s weather reports— Billingsley is, in fact, the chief meteorologist. In addition to helping Houstonians prepare for hurricanes and navigate the city’s sometimes unpredictable weather on television, Billingsley has been on the hunt for his family’s genealogical history and captured his journey on paper. Having been adopted as a child, Billingsley’s curiosity about his birth parents had been lifelong—until he delved deep into the world of DNA testing and genealogical research and pieced together his family tree. Written with Billingsley’s much-loved sense of humor and wit, Swabbed and Found is much more than a record of his findings; it’s a touching story of one man’s discovery that we are all part of the same big family.

Renovation ensures Hyatt Regency maintains its prestigious position and superb staycation status. by Elizabeth Craft
H
YAT T REGENCY HOUSTON ANNOUNCED THE COMPLETION OF ITS MULTIMILLION-DOLL AR RENOVATION OF THE ENTIRE HOTEL E ARLIER THIS YE AR , entirely transforming its 955 guestrooms and suites, lobby, front entrances, meeting and event spaces, Einstein’s, Shula’s Steak House and LobbiBar. A four-star hotel in the heart of downtown Houston, it opened to guests in 1972 and quickly became a hub for business and leisure travelers because of its proximity to Houston’s top entertainment and business districts. The update was inspired in part by the West Texas town Marfa which is known for attracting famous artists and architecture buffs. John Schafer, managing director for Hyatt Regency Houston, announced the completion of the extensive renovation in a press release this February: “With the updates now complete, we are excited to reintroduce the hotel as a one-stop destination that blends top-notch hospitality, world-class dining, and high-end meeting facilities paired with modern comforts and conveniences for business and leisure travelers alike.” Many Houstonians have long viewed Hyatt Regency Houston as a landmark of our great city, myself included, with its famous Spindletop restaurant that rotates, offering exceptional views of the gorgeous Houston skyline. The restaurant has been closed during the pandemic, but Hyatt also plans to do an extensive renovation of the restaurant soon, which considering the impressive new design of the rest of the hotel, is sure to be amazing. Growing up I always viewed Hyatt as the, “big, fancy hotel” and I remember my dad taking me twice to the Spindletop for my birthday! To me
that is what Hyatt Regency Houston represents— almost 50 years of memories for locals, travelers, and business folk. The Hyatt Regency Houston made an impression on my younger self and once again I am impressed by the grandness of this hotel. The lobby opens up to a dramatic 30-story atrium, one of the highest in Texas, with looping corridors in a triangle shape with a skylit ceiling. All this can be viewed from the elevators, which are open to the atrium separated only by glass, allowing you to look down into the lobby and bar as you get carried to your floor. The same goes for the elevators on the side of the building which look out to the city. Everywhere I looked I saw beautiful views of Houston.
Many Houstonians have long viewed Hyatt Regency Houston as a landmark of our great city, myself included, with its famous Spindletop restaurant that rotates, offering exceptional views of the gorgeous Houston skyline. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to stay at the Hyatt Regency Houston and I was genuinely impressed with the hospitality of the management and staff. Checking into the hotel was a socially distanced, comfortable experience. The check-in counters have been remodeled into

individual stations with protective shields between guests and staff that give guests the opportunity to be greeted by the staff personally and discuss their stay. This provides a more intimate and comfortable experience for guests. During the renovation, a strategic focus was on lighting, and throughout the lobby, guest rooms, meeting and event spaces, elegant light fixtures have been added to illuminate the modern aesthetic created by Hyatt adding to the welcoming milieu. The newly renovated rooms have been completely updated with modern furnishings and décor that are both beautiful and comfortable. The grey, blue and rose petal color pallet design
was influenced by artist Mark Rothko who became known for his abstract expressionist art which can be found on display at the Menil Collection 2.2 miles away from the hotel. The blue-grey accent wall, creates a calming aesthetic that blends with the sleek black floor tiles to help you stay relaxed and tranquil for your stay. In the bathrooms there is in-mirror lighting perfect for doing hair and makeup, one of the many small details the design team focused on to make sure your stay is perfect. For anyone traveling for business, you know the importance of always showing up looking your best and the fact that Hyatt included these fine details is very impressive. No expense was spared to ensure your stay with Hyatt Regency Houston is one you will never forget. Center to the lobby and looking up into the massive atrium is the stunning LobbiBar. Designed with Marfa in mind, several booths with woodslatted-canopies separate the bar from the check-in stations. Surrounding the beautiful quartz countertop bar is an inviting seating area for bar guests and throughout the lobby are several other intimate seating spaces for guests to do business, spend time with family or enjoy a cocktail or bite. Sharing the lobby space, you will also find an Einstein’s Bros. Bagels are perfect for a quick,
but filling breakfast to start off your day. Hyatt’s signature restaurant, Shula’s Steakhouse serves premium steak and fish dishes. Shula’s shows off a contemporary Scandinavian aesthetic with warm, neutral tones including dark wood features opening up the space while making it warm and inviting. To complete the renovation, all meeting and event spaces have been updated with increased broadband capabilities to ensure you will always stay connected with your peers. Additionally, like the entirety of the hotel renovations, all carpeting and wall vinyl was replaced, essentially making it as if Hyatt Regency Houston were a brand-new hotel. A top priority for Hyatt Regency Houston has been to provide a safe and healthy environment for its guests and staff, and so additional safety measures such as increased cleaning and disinfecting in public spaces, a focus on maintaining social distancing and keeping employees updated on policies are some of the protocols being implemented. Hyatt Regency Houston has received Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR accreditation which is the gold standard in prepared facilities, validating the hotel's cleanliness and safety. Hyatt Regency Houston also provides excellent access to all of the premier downtown attractions.
The hotel is within walking distance from the George R. Brown, the Toyota Center and Minute Maid Stadium. For further convenience, Hyatt Regency Houston is offering shuttle services for guests with the capacity to escort you anywhere in Houston you may need. More attractions include the theater district, the beautiful Discovery Green park, Downtown Aquarium and the Houston Museum District with 19 different museums and collections. If you will be using personal transportation, the hotel offers both valet services and personal parking, and for people with electric vehicles the hotel includes two charging stations. A wonderful resource for those planning to visit Houston is houstonmarketplace.com. Here you can easily purchase tickets to all the attractions and activities in Houston. For leisure travelers, business travelers or even locals simply having a “staycation,” Hyatt Regency Houston offers comfort, convenience and connection to Houston attractions all while staying in the heart of downtown Houston. HIGH ANXIETY.. WHEN TO CALL A PRO Everyone experiences stress once in a while, but there’s a difference between the occasional freak-out and struggling with persistent, lifelong anxiety. PERFORMANCE ANXIETY
S C E N A R I O : You have to give a big speech
before all the bigwigs at your company and are developing full-blown stage fright. The good news? You’re not alone. The 2016 Chapman University Survey on American Fears found found public speaking to be America’s top phobia. Equally nerve-wracking: asking the boss for a raise. Researchers say fear of rejection and insecurities about negotiation skills keep countless employees from requesting their due. T O P T O O L : Essential oils, especially lavender. “I always use essential oils before public-speaking events to calm my nerves and help me focus,” says Heather Edwards, LMHC, BCC, NCC, a psychotherapist and board-certified coach. “Oils with lavender, Roman chamomile, and tree or grass oils like spruce and vetiver have both calming and grounding properties.” A 2010 study in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology found that dental patients were less anxious if the waiting room was scented with lavender oil, and in a Florida study published in Holistic Nursing Practice in 2009, students who inhaled lavender oil before an exam had less anxiety.

Your self-doubt is compounded by social anxiety—a leeriness of new people and strange situations. Fears of humiliation loom. T O P T O O L : Exercise, especially Pilates and yoga. Physical activity directly reduces the flight-orfight hormone cortisol, explains Jaimie PerlaFurst, MSW, a former social worker. “When confronted with a stressful situation, our bodies release a wave of stress hormones to prime them to fight or flee. Exercise relieves that excess energy and tension.” Moreover, physical exercise increases strength and releases endorphins—both potent confidence-builders. exercise can dispel anxiety, Pilates and yoga in particular has an incredible way of bringing people’s focus to their bodies through gentle stretching, gradual conditioning and integrating the breath,” notes Perla-Furst. “Pilates can be incredibly powerful in providing a place for the body to relax, rejuvenate and release tension.” So if you have an intimidating new class or encounter coming up, definitely squeeze in a workout beforehand. “It will help center your mind and body,” says Perla-Furst.

AWKWARD AUDITIONS
S C E N A R I O : You’ve finally landed an in-person interview for the job you’ve been dreaming of. But it feels as if your nerves are going to take over and ruin your chance to show who you really are. T O P T O O L : Chamomile. Yes, it might sound like
hippy dippy baloney. But compounds (apigenin and luteolin) in this daisy-like plant promote relaxation by actually binding to the same brain receptors as drugs like Valium. A 2009 study at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center found that patients with generalized anxiety disorder who took chamomile supplements for eight weeks had a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms compared to patients who were given a placebo. T E C H N I Q U E : Brew up a pot of chamomile tea
the night before your interview or audition. It will calm your nerves, settle your stomach and promote more sound sleep to boot. And don’t be afraid to use extra teabags. You can never overdo it! Chamomile can also be taken as a supplement, with capsules usually containing 1.2 percent apigenin, along with dried chamomile flowers. Mom was right. Have a nice cup of tea! E X T R A P O W E R T O O L : Drink a cup of green tea 30
minutes before your meeting. A 2006 study in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy shows that the amino acid L-theanine, present in green tea, can stimulate the brain’s alpha waves, resulting in a more relaxed state without drowsiness.
THE " WHAT-IF" DISEASE
S C E N A R I O : An upcoming medical procedure (Lasik? Root canal?) has you fretting in trepidation. Fear of doctors, needles and blood may even cause you to avoid important steps necessary to maintain your health, job or well-being. These squeamish terrors haunt many of us and are often passed down in families. T O P T O O L : Walk—preferably in nature. “Walking is great for fighting anxiety,” says Perla-Furst. “Walking gets your heart pumping, which increases the breath, bringing more oxygen to the brain. It also activates soothing neurons in the brain.” In general, 20 minutes will produce the desired state of relaxation and return your mind to a more rational place where you’ll recall that millions of people have survived these medical ordeals before you—and lived to tell about them.
MORE TOOLS FOR COGNITIVE COPING Although medications such as Lexapro and Xanax can be helpful for generalized anxiety disorders, “pills don't teach you skills,” insists Robert L. Leahy, PhD. If your fidget spinner isn’t doing the trick, here’s a short list of his exercises for vanquishing panic. • Specify exactly what you think is going to happen. For example, “I will be humiliated by strangers at the party,” or “I will get fired.” • Remember how many times you have been wrong in the past. • Think of the worst outcome, best outcome and most likely outcome that you could expect. • Try doing the thing that makes you anxious—and do it over and over again. For example, touch the object that is “contaminated,” talk to a stranger, or ride the elevator up and down 20 times. • Use the boredom technique. Repeat your anxious thought for 20 minutes very slowly. For example, I could get fired. Repeat this until you’re bored listening to yourself. • Compartmentalize your anxious thoughts. Acknowledge that you have these thoughts, put them in a bottle on a shelf, and focus on productive activities even if you’re anxious doing them. Focus on goals, not anxiety. • Treat your anxious thoughts like background noise or telemarketing calls you “decline” to answer.
T E C H N I Q U E : Head into the woods. In a 2009 review
published in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, Japanese researchers found that people who walked through the woods (an activity they call shinrin-yoku, literally a “forest bath”) had lower stress hormone levels after their walk than those who took a comparable walk in an urban area. If you're stuck in a city, take your stroll in a park or quiet tree-lined street. E X T R A P O W E R T O O L : For a bonus hit of bliss, pet
an animal, encourages Edwards. Research from the journal Anxiety, Stress, & Coping in 2003 confirms the angst-reducing effect of communing with fourlegged friends. H SUMMER 2021

Uncover the Alluring Beauty of

S A SE ASONED TR AVEL WRITER , I DON’ T WANT TO SAY THAT TR AVEL GETS OLD, BUT ONE MIGHT THINK , ANOTHER ISL AND IN THE CARIBBE AN? What on earth could this island show me that the last one didn’t offer? Well, for one thing, Anguilla, was rated the Best Island for the third year in a row. Anguilla, a British territory in the Caribbean, is one of those islands that makes you stand corrected. The island itself is small, only 16 miles long by three miles wide, but the vistas, the beaches, the people and the food will undoubtedly leave you wanting more. Anguilla, affectionately called the Rainbow Island, is located in the Caribbean east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and directly north of St. Maarten. Anguilla is known for its coral reefs and beaches and includes many smaller islands and cays. The first thing you notice when you arrive at the island destination is the plethora of sailboats. Boats are everywhere. In fact, most tourists arrive on St. Maarten, then take a water ferry to Anguilla. Other options include puddle jumper planes or private jets. The luxurious Cuisinart Golf Resort and Spa has a panoramic view of the Caribbean. The open, Grecian-esque architecture blends perfectly with the turquoise, serene water. As you walk through the white, spectacular lobby entrance which seamlessly blends to the rest of the resort, you are greeted by the sounds of the ocean taunting you into its languid embrace. Trust me, it is a strong pull. The first resort was developed with the Amalfi Coast in mind. The stark white buildings opposite the crystal blue water showcase all that the resort has to offer. The Cuisinart spans many acres and can accommodate large families. They have a variety of rooms, bungalows, suites and apartments surely fitting any need. Each suite will boast a view of the water and a small balcony, should you be lucky enough to be on
the first floor, then you will have direct access to the beach. If you have the means to rent the “house,” I highly recommend it. This house boasts three to four bedrooms that are all detached but are connected by a central atrium. When you walk in the kitchen, the dining and entertaining area welcome you, as do the wall of windows that take you to the private pool and direct, private access to your own little section of the beach and resort. Should you choose to have butler and chef services, that can be made available. No luxury is spared in this dreamy setting. There is much to do at the Cuisinart Resort. There is something for everyone. The kids have their own bright, mesmerizing splash pad area that can entertain for hours, you might even see an adult or two on a hot day! There are pools throughout the resort for lounging, sunbathing and swimming. But they also have aquatic kickboxing/ cycling and stand-up paddle board yoga. These are all offered to all guests at no extra charge. Open, yet inviting, bar areas are the perfect respite for visitors to relax and soak up the views. The bar offers group tastings of Caribbean rums, flights of wine, etc. You have a vision? They have the reality. There are five restaurants on the main resort and each offers different cuisine to satisfy varying palettes. Asian-fusion, Spanish, French, local, no matter what you eat, you will be delighted, it is Cuisinart for goodness sake! A specialty of the Asian-fusion restaurant is their cooking classes. This was probably one of my favorite things about the whole trip. We were given a set menu, chef hats, all the ingredients (like in a Hello Fresh box) and a fun chef to guide us through the process on the hibachi grille. Nothing
When Cuisinart built this resort, no expense was spared. This is evident in every detail you see, especially in the spa and golf areas.

can bring a group together like a cooking class filled with yummy smells, good conversation and learning something new. When Cuisinart built this resort, no expense was spared. This is evident in every detail you see, especially in the spa and golf areas. The spa is a multi-award-winning blissful haven. The building is a 27,000-square-foot complete circle allowing windows for views of the resort and island. There are 16 full-service rooms. If you choose to indulge in one of the many spa packages, you are whisked to the waiting area on the second floor. This overlooks the peaceful water and there’s a breeze from the ocean that floats in and out of the room. They have Vichy rooms, couples massage rooms, hydrotherapy massage and private men’s rooms too. There’s a saltwater hydrotherapy pool for relaxing before or after your treatments. You may never want to leave. If spa treatments aren’t your thing, that’s okay, they offer classes on essential oils, a “blending” bar where you create your own body scrubs, oils, lotions and even candle making. Truly, something for everyone. Although I cannot say that I'm an avid golfer, I can appreciate beauty and precision when I see it. The Cuisinart Golf Resort is spectacular. Greg Norman, the legend himself, helped personally design this “fun, but challenging” golf course. It is well known across the Caribbean and most vacationers will make a stop at the course no matter what hotel/resort or island they are staying on. The course is fun but challenging because
there is water on 13 of the 18 holes. I guess we are on an island. If you are a guest of the hotel and decide to play, there are clubs for you to enjoy included in your stay. No need to pack those heavy sticks and lug them through customs. You can always upgrade to a “premium” selection of clubs for a fee, naturally, but it is nice to know that golf is an option for all. This golfer’s paradise is a sight to see for sure. Obviously, with all of the above-mentioned options at the Cuisinart resort, why would you need to leave? Well, technically, you don’t. Mr. Cuisinart decided he would just build another resort a few miles down the road “just in case” you got bored or wanted something else to do on the island. No joke. The Reef is a mile or so down the resort road and is a high rise building with 50 rooms in the main building with 25 beachfront villas/suites. We were unable to get a full tour of this fabulously posh resort because it had been rented out by a family for the week. (Hello, adopt me please.) Lucky for us, guests of both resorts can come and go as they please and use all the facilities the Reef has to offer. This Anguilla trip has quickly settled itself into one of the top three vacation spots I’ve been lucky enough to visit. The island, the people, the food, it’s heaven. The only negative thing I can say about the trip was the length I stayed. It wasn’t enough. If you are going to have a bit of a trek to get there, and you do, then you should enjoy your time there unrestricted. You will thank me later. Bon voyage! H SUMMER 2021

Shifting your mind-set to one of gratitude has the power to transform every aspect of your life. by Stacy Baker Masand

It’s like fertilizer for the mind, spreading connections and improving brain function in nearly every realm of experience,” says Dr. Emmons. will begin to neurally take the shape of anxiety, depression and anger,” he adds. “Ask your brain to give thanks, and it will get better at finding things to be grateful for and begin to take the shape of gratitude.” Read on for a few of the ways that a gratitude practice—or even just a grateful mind-set—can change your life.
IT MAKES THE GOOD IN YOUR LIFE EVEN BETTER. The more grateful you are, the more you have to be grateful about. “Like a microphone or amplifier, gratitude pumps up the volume on the good in our lives,” says Dr. Emmons. “The good that we see in ourselves, the good that we see in others,

of the trendiest and most effective ways to improve your health, your relationships and your outlook on life. Unlike some health fads, this one has roots in science and has been shown to actually change how our brains are wired. “Gratitude enhances performance in every domain that’s been examined— psychological, relational, emotional, physical,” says Robert Emmons, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis and author of The Little Book of Gratitude (Gaia, 2016). Stacy Chang, a Pilates teacher, turned to a daily gratitude practice after she hit rock bottom following a number of lifechanging upheavals: In the span of a week, she quit her job, broke up with her boyfriend and moved across the state. “I was devastated, heartbroken and terrified, as I was blind to what the future would look like with all these changes,” recalls Chang. Shortly after her move, her sister gave her Wayne Dyer’s book, Inspiration: Your Ultimate Calling (Hay House, 2007), which talked about starting a daily gratitude practice.
So each morning, Chang started waking up and naming 10 things she was grateful for, a habit she continues today. “At first, I thought it was silly and would never work,” she says. “But I started feeling the effects within a week. I began to see a lot of things change, especially inside me. I became aware of feelings such as deep compassion, love and a calm that soothed my soul. The negative mind shifted to seeing things in the light.” She likens it to finally putting on a pair of glasses and beginning to see a positive world. Now she still uses gratitude when experiencing flareups, blocks or physical pain. “I know that even pain can be transformed,” she says. “I’ve experienced excruciating knee pain that has been transmuted into complete blissful energy. The mind is so powerful and capable of so much more than we can fathom.” “Gratitude is medicine! It’s like fertilizer for the mind, spreading connections and improving brain function in nearly every realm of experience,” says Dr. Emmons. He says that’s because the thoughts that flow through our minds sculpt our brains. “Rest your mind upon worry, sadness and annoyance, and it

devices, our minds tend to hijack each and every opportunity for happiness,” says Dr. Emmons. “Whether stemming from our own internal thoughts or the daily news headlines, we are exposed to a constant drip of negativity.” The
IT INCREASES YOUR LONGEVITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE. New research from Northwestern
University found that gratitude can improve the quality of life even for those faced with a life-threatening illness. This makes sense, explains Todd Keeley, a life coach and founder of Miami-based Fruition Strategies, because apathy, anger, fear and grief can break down the body on a cellular level. “A mindset that focuses on moving through these limiting emotions and breaking through these mental states involves reframing one’s life and circumstances,” he

best weapon for this barrage of gloom? Remembering your own good fortune. Say you’re listening to the news about a natural disaster; shift your focus to feeling grateful that you’re safe and in a position to donate. By constantly replacing negative thoughts with grateful ones, you’ll be able to appreciate the good in your life.
says. “And one of the fastest ways to reframe is gratitude.”
IT EASES ANXIETY. Being thankful also reduces stress, experts say. “Instead of running loops in the mind of what’s wrong or fear of the future, practicing gratitude builds new neurotransmitters and weakens those old thought patterns,” explains Keeley. You worry less because you’re living in the moment.
there, it helps deescalate whatever disagreement we’re having at the time.”
IT SPEEDS RECOVERY FROM INJURY. When patients and doctors show gratitude toward each other, the recuperation process can be shorter, according to Karena
Wu, DPT, a physical therapist. She makes a point of expressing thankfulness to her clients when they follow her recommended exercise prescription. “I find that it helps them physically as well as psychologically in understanding their injury and their course of care,” she says. “It
can help them progress more efficiently and more quickly when we demonstrate gratitude in the dual participation in their rehabilitation.” She also says gratitude helps patients comply with treatments—and they are more likely to keep their appointments and show up on time.
IT ENHANCES YOUR LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS. “Gratitude is the moral cement, the all-purpose glue, the emotional spackle that squeezes into the cracks between people, strengthening and solidifying these relationships,” says Dr. Emmons. A 2017 article in The Review of Communication backs him up: It found that expressing gratitude for your partner has surprisingly longlasting effects—up to six months. Another study published in the journal Emotion in 2013 showed that loved ones who received thanks were more responsive to their partner’s needs and happier in their relationships. Lauren Thompson, a counselor, agrees that showing gratitude is a game-changer in relationships. “My husband and I both journal every night on the topic of gratitude and what we are grateful for about each other,” says Thompson. “In all honesty, there are some nights that it’s really challenging to go to a place of gratitude. However, once we get ourselves

IT CAN HELP YOU GET THROUGH A TOUGH WORKOUT.
IT HELPS YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.
Melissa Engelland, a fitness professional, starts all of her classes by giving gratitude to students for showing up and giving their best. “Your mind is the most amazing tool—it can help you through anything,” To help them persist through the tougher exercises, she recommends they focus on someone or something they’re grateful for. “It’s about shifting your mind-set to something you’re happy about rather than a painful or tough moment. If you’re having a hard time, tell yourself, I can do anything for five more seconds.”
Making gratitude a habit is key to a more productive, successful life, says Keeley. By taking stock of what’s working in your life and the gifts around you, you can pivot from being stuck in challenges and adversity. “Gratitude is a shift in mind-set that produces physical energy, mental clarity and a more open mind,” he explains. “Motivation, inspired thought and creativity follow. Working towards reaching goals becomes easier, and you overcome obstacles at a more rapid pace.” H

Ways to Practice Gratitude
Incorporating thankfulness into your life is easy—and fun. OF COURSE, YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO MAKE IT A LIFESTYLE, like Dr. Emmons, a psychology
professor, does. “Asking about my gratitude practice is like asking if I have a breathing or a walking practice. Every moment is an opportunity for gratitude,” he explains. “When I started to live this way, everything changed. I began to see opportunities where I once saw problems and began to see abundance where I once saw deficits. Looking at life through a grateful lens shapes our reality.” If you’re new to being thankful, try these small ways to show thanks.

1.
Make a list of what you typically take for granted, suggests Dr. Emmons. Instead of thinking of them as “for granted,” think of them as “as granted,” to remind yourself that most people in the world don’t have as much as we do. Repeat every month or so to make sure you stay on track.
2.
Substitute positive for negative thoughts. “Identify nongrateful thoughts, for example, thinking you deserve better circumstances, that other people are better off…that things have not turned out the way you wanted,” Dr. Emmons says. Instead, reframe using language that expresses thankfulness, like “gifts, givers, receivers, favor, fortune, fortunate, blessed, lucky.” For instance, if someone else gets a promotion you think you deserved, rather than complain, be grateful that you will have more personal time you can devote to friends and family.
3.
Try what Dr. Emmons calls the “George Bailey effect,” and imagine how different your life would be if a certain person wasn’t in it, or if a specific event or circumstance had never occurred. When you subtract something good from your life, it triggers feelings of thankfulness for what you have.
4.
Create a gratitude board. “I cut out pictures or words of gratitude I feel from magazines or online, and put them all together,” says Pilates teacher Stacy Chang. “This way I can see all the things I’m grateful for and be reminded of how sweet life truly is.”
5.
Go back to the basics of manners and kindness, suggests Dr. Karena Wu, a physical therapist. “Taking the time to ask someone how they are doing and actually attend to the person’s answer, saying thank you, holding a door or elevator
open, or asking if someone needs help…can have a major impact and help overcome doubt and bring a cohesiveness to our fractured world,” says Dr. Wu. “When we are givers, we reflect more clearly on what it is like to be a receiver,” adds Dr. Emmons. “Also, we are grateful for the opportunity to give, knowing that giving brings happiness to ourself and others.”
6.
Write an old-school thank-you note. “There’s something very intimate and powerful about hand-writing a letter to someone,” says Lauren Thompson. “How often do you get a letter or a card in the mail? I’m guessing not very often, but when you do get one, it’s an exciting moment.” It can be someone who’s done something nice for you recently—or someone from your past whom you never had a chance to thank properly. In a 2005 study in American Psychologist, subjects who wrote gratitude letters to people who’d helped them at a key moment in their lives experienced a positive glow for a month afterward.
7.
Express gratitude in the a.m. Pilates teacher Melissa Engellard sets the tone for her family’s day by showing them she’s thankful for them. “I used to be stressed and in a hurry most mornings, which wasn’t good for anyone,” she explains. “Now I choose to be grateful for each day, by starting with ‘good morning,’ asking how everyone is, and letting them know I’m happy to see them. Everything is so much smoother now.”
8.
Get yourself in nature, recommends life coach Todd Keeley. Observe the beauty around you, and breathe in the gratitude. “Shout, ‘thank you’ aloud toward a lake, river, mountain or tree,” he says. “Be a freak in nature, not a freak of nature.” SUMMER 2021

Dr. Pasha may unapologetically plunge into the personal and is truly in the business of wellness. “I don’t treat X-rays and computer sleep studies, I treat patients!” He states, “Not every sleep apnea patient needs a CPAP machine and not every sinus sufferer needs surgery.” His clinic is totally focused on something so unbelievably important—breathing freely and sleeping soundly both day and night. Being double board certified in Ear, Nose and Throat as well as Sleep Medicine, Dr. Pasha is an educator at heart and holds several academic appointments including Clinical Assistant Professor at UTMB School of Medicine. Dr. Pasha is often featured in the media and is a prolific author, publishing several books and peer reviewed journal articles in his field. This is a legacy practice—cutting edge and uncompromisingly competent.

KENNETH LEE, MD Modern Spine, PLLC
SPINE RELATED ISSUES ARE AMONG THE MOST COMMON AND PAINFUL MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS. Modern Spine,
PLLC was established to deliver comprehensive and stateof-the-art care for all aspects of spinal disorders in order to maximize each and every individual patient’s outcome. Dr. Lee is a board-certified spine surgeon, uniquely trained in both orthopedic spine and neurological spine surgery. This dual-fellowship training is rare and considered to be the highest level of spine surgery training. Dr. Lee’s treatment philosophy is focused on compassionate, conservative, and evidence-based care. Educating patients is of the utmost importance. Dr. Lee and his team strive to spend all the time necessary with their patients to ensure that they have a clear understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of conservative care and possible surgical intervention. During his time with each patient, Dr. Lee works to develop a genuine relationship based upon trust and mutual respect. In that regard, Dr. Lee has been awarded the Patient’s Choice Award for several consecutive years. He has been featured in the Newsweek “The Science of Healthy Living” issue, in the “Best Doctors in Texas” section. He has also been spotlighted in H Texas magazine’s “Ask the Expert” column and selected as one of the “Super Docs” in Living magazine. In addition, he has been featured on CBS and Fox as a pioneering surgeon using the most modern and minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. Dr. Lee is actively involved in research projects, as these endeavors help him identify and adopt new technologies and procedures to assist patients in returning to a normal and productive lifestyle. The majority of his patients improve from a multi-disciplinary conservative approach. If surgery is required, the practice specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, with many procedures performed on an outpatient basis. Dr. Lee and his team welcome the opportunity to provide you with personalized care using the most successful treatment and surgical options available to relieve your neck and back pain.

THE AESTHETIC CENTER FOR PLASTIC SURGERY Plastic Surgery
AWARDS COLLECTIVELY, THE AESTHETIC CENTER FOR PLASTIC SURGERY (ACPS) IS ONE OF THE NATION’S MOST AWARDED PLASTIC SURGERY GROUPS. Its surgeons’ game-changing contributions to
plastic surgery—the techniques they’ve developed, the safety standards they’ve instituted, and the research they’ve published— have made ACPS the gold-standard in plastic surgery in the eyes of many. ACPS was named the Best Aesthetic Practice in Texas at the 2016 My Face My Body Awards, based upon the votes of an elite international judging panel. Performing more than 8,000 face, breast and body cosmetic plastic surgery procedures a year—ACPS surgeons draw patients from around the globe because of their finesse in blending artistry with surgical precision, advanced technology and research in a caring environment. Surgeries
are conducted at ACPS’s expansive state-of-the-art private surgery center, which includes 4 operating rooms and a team of highly-skilled medical professionals who’ve been handselected by ACPS surgeons. ACPS offers women and men a wide variety of nonsurgical treatments for the face and body at its elegant Spa & Rejuvenation Centers, which are located at the group’s two office locations. Guests can relax and renew while ACPS’ talented aesthetic nurses and skin care specialists deliver procedures and products individually-tailored to get the best results possible with little to no downtime required. LTHOUGH WE CAN’ T TR AVEL TO ITALY YET, WE THOUGHT WE’D TAKE YOU ON A ROMANTIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE . In the Italian spirit, we invite you to come together, create great food and spend time to treasure with family and friends. For the lovely backyard setting, we placed a long table topped with burlap linen, wooden chairs, gold and white chargers, and a stunning centerpiece displaying crystal bowls, lemons, yellow orchids and stephanotis flowers. The seating cards were made of a vintage Italian demijohn jug with names written on the lemons and a white candle. All the decor was curated by Kirksey Gregg Productions.

Start your evening with a fresh and tangy Limoncello Spritzer. This easy recipe calls for equal parts of 1 shot of your favorite Limoncello (ours is from the Amalfi Coast), 1 shot Limonata San Pellegrino and 2 shots Prosecco. Shake and pour over ice and garnish with a lemon wedge and mint sprig. The Antipasti is served on a uniquely carved wooden tray piled high with everything from gourmet cheeses to artichoke hearts, fresh and sundried tomatoes, radishes, several types of pickles and meats, and of course Chianti as the paired wine. Entertaining tip: Have fun stylizing with different sized bowls. —Recipes courtesy of Deborah Elias

TOTALLY TUBULAR! Hungry Like the Wolf serves up comfort food in a rad setting. By Laurette M. Veres • Photos by Jose Piña

ROM THE PURPLE R AIN BELGIAN WAFFLE ON THE BRE AKFAST MENU (served all day) to the Motley Crudité appetizer plate and everything in between, you’ll have fun just reading the menu. Hungry Like the Wolf transforms the 1980s into a three-dimensional playground for the eyes. Think back to parachute pants and big, big hair—the decor takes you there. Each time the door opens you hear “chicka chicka” and then it hits you: that’s from the ‘80s movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Speaking of iconic ‘80s movies, the cast of The Breakfast Club is featured on the wall. Across the diner, five stills of Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High from 1982 highlights one of the most memorable bikini scenes in movie history. Look around to see Tetris wallpaper, photos of album covers you probably had on your wall like The Go Go’s and Men at Work. Local artist Hannah Bull painted her interpretation of Boy George, Prince, Madonna, a Run DMC jam box and a Hungry Like the Wolf mixtape. Look up for a larger than life Rubik’s cube. Guests of all ages are enjoying this traditional diner. The “Pour Some Syrup on Me” pancakes and the “Pretty in Pink” Texas Toast stuffed with strawberries and cream are available all day. The Angus burger is stellar—even better when you add an egg. Where’s the Beef? is the vegetarian burger option. The chicken fried chicken and homemade gravy are sure to be favorites. Salads are huge like the Our House in the Middle of the Street and the Duran DuRanch is made from scratch. There’s a full bar with drink names sure to have you laughing. They have all your favorites and originals like Social Distancing on a Beach, Blue Lagoon and the classic frozen margarita! Regulars love the vibe. A large screen plays MTV style ‘80s videos non-stop. One minute Rick Springfield is singing about Jesse’s girl and the next minute you’re bobbing your head to Wham. The ‘80s is alive and well at Hungry Like the Wolf. On the weekends DJ Mike Snow spins ‘80s tunes and the diner changes to 21 and over nightly after 9:00 p.m. H

VIBR ANT, CULTUR AL ASSET AT THE CORNER OF T WO NEIGHBORHOODS, THIRD WARD AND E AST END— SMITHER PARK is a work of art in progress providing a unique opportunity to see artists in action. The park was created for the community, by the community and serves as a venue for many special events. So far, more than 300 artists have contributed to the whimsical pieces of art in the park. Dan Phillips, known for his innovative and inspirational work worldwide, a long time friend of Stephanie Smither and her belated husband John Smither whom the park commemorates, is the artist and mastermind builder behind the unique design. The half-acre plot of land where the park is located sits adjacent to The Orange Show and features the Lindley Fish Amphitheater, the Vinson & Elkins Pavilion, Burguires, Hinton and Mathre Swings, the Marilyn Oshman Meditation Garden and a sprawling 400-foot memory wall—each adorned with mosaic artwork created out of recycled and found materials. Inspired by the Orange Show’s philosophy of promoting and sustaining self-taught art, the mosaic-covered park serves as a testimony to the vibrancy and creativity of the city of Houston. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk and the admission is free. But, special events may require tickets so be sure to call ahead. —Matthew Abernathy 80
