Lindsay’s Message “I will definitely be back” are the words I said to my travel companion and fellow stylist, Stephanie of Town & Country Bridal in St. Louis. Our trip to Barbados to participate with brideLIFE magazine in a bridal photo shoot was an amazing opportunity and one not to be forgotten.

Of course leaving for a tropical island in the middle of February in Ohio, one can only have the utmost anticipation for blue skies, warm weather and complete paradise. What we were greeted with was so much more! One would think that being such a small island that the talent would be slim, meaning one true expert in each field, but I was amazed at the number of top notch vendors we had the pleasure to work with. From the makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and models……there was no shortage of beauty happening from all angles! La Jeune Mariee is my life and has gained a reputation for outstanding style and service since 2004. I love collaborating with other vendors that fit this mold! The gowns I chose to bring to Barbados were not simply the “destination” styles one would imagine in a tropical location. I wanted to really show brides that no matter your destination, if you want traditional, ball gowns or even bling, it’s ok to wear that on the beach! There are no rules! Let’s leave the fur for those northern brides though, ok? HA! I truly hope that everyone enjoys this amazing edition of brideLIFE magazine as much as I enjoyed planning and executing the shoot with all of the other vendors. Getting married in Barbados

is easy.

If either party was married previously and widowed, a certified copy of the marriage certificate and death certificate in respect of the deceased spouse; If either party was divorced , an original decree absolute or a certified copy of Final Judgment not decree Nisi. If either party was previously married and widowed, a Certified copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse. Where necessary, all documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. A marriage may be solemnized immediately after the issue of the licence. A letter from your marriage officer stating the date and time of the wedding. $25 BDS stamp fee for overseas couples and $10 BDS for Barbadian Citizens $200 BDS for Marriage License for overseas couple or $45 BDS for Barbadian Citizens.

Helpful Information CHURCH WEDDING. If the Bride and Groom decide that they want to get married in a church, the couple needs a written confirmation from their priest that they are both practicing Christians and have participated in pre-marital counselling. ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

There is no waiting period or minimum length of stay to get married in Barbados. Application for a marriage license must be made by both parties in person, at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bridgetown (Tel: 246-228-8950).

If you are requesting a Roman Catholic Church wedding these are the requirements needed: Parties must be interviewed by their Parish Priest in the home Diocese of the Catholic party. It is he who will undertake the necessary investigations, obtain a dispensation if required and provide information about participation in a pre-marriage preparation programme. Your Parish Priest will then forward the relevant papers to his Diocesan Chancery. The chancery should then send them well in advance, to the Diocesan office in Barbados. The Sacrament of Marriage may not be performed on Holy Saturday.

JEWISH SYNAGOGUE. There is no Rabbi in Barbados and non-Jews are not allowed to use the Synagogue. Those who would like to get married in the Synagogue must bring their own Rabbi. There is a rental fee of US$1,500. For further information about the Synagogue and couples may contact Jimmy Altman at: altman@caribsurf.com 11

Q : First things first! Where are you from and how did you and your hubby meet? A : Our’s is an amazing love story! We began this ride as students in 2000 at University of Oklahoma and we dated for a year while there, but ultimately went our separate ways after graduation. Marvin went on to travel

the globe as a comedian and I became entrenched in my career as a physician and worked on obtaining my MD. We kept in touch, a few emails, random phone calls and finally a reunion. After that we spent a year, many long distance phone calls, visits and challenges while true love flourished. Marvin proposed on April 27th 2012 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and our dream wedding was held in Barbados on November 25th 2012. It was an exotic extravaganza, full of love!

Q : What made you decide to get married in Barbados? A : We both wanted a small intimate wedding and thought a destination wedding would be the answer. While studying I had visited Barbados and just fallen in love with the island. I have a West Indian background

(Jamaican heritage) so I really wanted that Caribbean heritage to be a focal part of our special day. I thought Barbados would be ideal for the wedding, it’s a beautiful island and we felt our guests could explore and enjoy it while here.

Q : Walk us through the process...how did you choose your planner, church, location etc...? A: Honestly, the first place I turned was the internet. Finding a wedding coordinator for the service was easy, there was a lot of choice and having emailed several organizers we ultimately chose to go with Weddings by Malissa. After just a few phone calls with Tanya and Malissa, I really felt very comfortable with allowing them to manage all the aspects of the day.

Q A : The most important part of this celebration was that we got to spend as much time in Barbados with our loved ones, friends and family who had travelled all this way to be with us. Every day there was an event

: You’re photos tell a beautiful story, they encapsulate the whole trip, your family, the emotions really come through them. Would you recommend to other’s that they capture more than just the day?

for the guests to enjoy. The first night was spent at the Fish Fry in Oistin’s where we really enjoyed the fresh seafood and the music in the open air, some of our friends even went on for a late night karaoke session! We had a lovely rehearsal brunch and then a catamaran cruise where we took in the sunset along the west coast of the island. It was intimate and we got to spend quality time with everyone which was very special to us. Our wedding was on Sunday at the beautiful Bellevue Villa in Waterford, where we exchanged romantic vows in front of 65 guests. All of it was captured beautifully by our photographer Christopher and I do love that we have these memories to look back on in our album along side the actual day.

Q : Tell us a little about your vision for your day and where you drew your inspiration for your themes.

A : Our theme was Exotic Extravaganza! We highlighted

everything with peacock feathers with the main colour of Emerald Green and accent colours of Orange, fuchsia and purple. We wanted the guests to experience an elegant event that they would remember for many years to come.

Could you tell us about your experience with professionals in the wedding industry here in Barbados?

: Our experience with Weddings by Malissa, Bianca of Idovideoart, Hair Styles by Donna, MakeUp by Tessa and Daily Cookie was very professional and the wedding day was stress free and very relaxing for the entire wedding party and the bride and groom. It was perfect!

Q : What was the most memorable moment for you? A : Marvin will tell you it was when the ring bearer

alerted him that he could turn around while standing at the alter and seeing me for the first time. For me, the most memorable moment was being able to express my vows with the love of my life in such a serene and peaceful setting, with friends and family to witness. We have heard from so many of our guests that this was the best wedding they have ever been to and how much they enjoyed the island as well as all the people they met. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so pleased to be here in brideLIFE magazine and cannot wait to share this again with our friends and family!

Wedding Co-ordinator Manager of Events Unusual Michelle and Richard share a joie de vivre which is evident from the moment you meet them, so it was essential that this was reflected in the details of their wedding. Richard is well known in Barbados as one of the leading figures on the local Entertainment scene, which played a role in bringing the pair together, as Michelle has an undeniable love for all things Carnival. Quirky elements such as the Pan around the neck steel band dressed in all white which led guests from the ceremony to reception. Colourful rum and vodka â&#x20AC;&#x201C; infused sno cones and the surprise appearance of the internally known Soca artist Ruppee left an indelible impression on their guests. For this wedding we chose to celebrate the vibrant colours of the Caribbean countryside, where the 370 year old Fisher Pond Great House, nestles in the lush valley of Sweet Bottom. We used all local materials and flowers to produce a kaleidoscope of colour and texture. An orange bamboo arch festooned with pink and orange bougainvillea and hibiscus flowers for the bride to walk through. Orange bamboo tripods for glowing candles, with raw silk orange and fuchsia pink bows and garlands of dendrobium orchids, framed the carpet of fresh petals. More dendrobium orchids decorated the backs of our handmade raw wooden ‘Market Chairs’. The 300 year old ‘Drip Stones’ formed the focus in the intimate walled side garden, with Maiden hair ferns and Beaumontia flowers used for finishing touches. For a centrepiece for the tables we used sugar cane, freshly cut from the nearby field, in cylindrical glass vases on bright lime green cloths to create local colour and texture. The 200 year old Barbadian Mahogany table was decorated lavishly with pink and orange bougainvillea forming a magnificent centrepiece. Breadfruit leaves were used as table mats and the table was finished off with orange and green wine glasses, Kings pattern silver cutlery, and orange and bright pink linen napkins. Cuisine featured: Roasted Vegetable and Feta Salad. 49

BEFORE THE ALTAR Planning your Caribbean wedding,it’s easy to understand that the mind often wonders to finale, the honeymoon! Waking up to the sound of waves crawling along the white sand beach, florally scented gardens outside your window, time and space coming to a standstill in the most beautiful place on earth. And indeed....these are memories every newlywed will cherish!

But before you get too far ahead of yourself...Barbados isn’t all about the beaches. The island is mapped with historical churches and architectural marvels that date back centuries, boast gorgeous views and carry a special place in the hearts of the people. We’d love to introduce you to three of our personal favourites and encourage you to celebrate your future by stepping back into the past.

FOR THE TRADITIONAL

For a heavenly view we highly recommend St. John’s Anglican Church. Settled atop the rolling hills on the East Coast of the island, this Barbados National Trust Building is almost two hundred years old and our top choice for a classic church ceremony. Built in 1836 the churchyard is famous for being the resting place for Ferdinand Paleolgous, direct descendent of Roman Emperor Constantine; but it’s the expansive breezy gardens that enthrall visitors. The gorgeous view will have you on cloud nine; the panoramic vista makes for a scenic backdrop for photos against the North and East Coasts, the countrysides tenderly roll into the Atlantic waves crashing against the shore. The Church itself is a gorgeously grand building full of character. It’s ideal for larger weddings, with ample parking and generous space inside. Dark woods and marble floors keep it cool and classic, the traditional stained glass windows cast droplets of colourful sunshine across the altar and pulpit (expertly crafted from 6 different types of wood: ebony, locust, mahogany, manchineel, oak and pine). We love the tradition, the craftsmanship, the peaceful tranquility

of the church, it’s definitely made it a favourite among visitors and locals alike.

OUTDOOR

We’ve explored pretty much every idyllic church on the island and believe whether you choose to hold your ceremony here or not....you should as a vistor to the island go and see the Codrington Theological School. A short drive from St. John’s Church, this historical building is secluded in the eastern countryside and boasts expansive grounds aching to be transformed for your special day! For those who wish to tastefully blend the old world with modern concepts, this estate has high potential. Established in the mid 18th Century as a theological school for young gentry on the island, brides looking to build their ideal ceremony and reception from the ground up will give this private locale their nod of approval. Despite having been ravaged by both fire and hurricanes at various points in it’s near 300 year history, the gorgeous coral stone buildings now stand majestic and regal on the well-manicured lawns. The setting is ideal for afternoon nuptials; the lawns expansive enough to hold marquees for a seated dinner, while the famous lily pond and coral stone exterior of the college provide picturesque photo opportunities. The delightful Royal Palm Avenue, kitchen facilities and private chapel add value to the location as it’s both budget friendly and uniquely positioned to be one of the few churches that can host both ceremony and reception on it’s premises.

JEWISH

Far from the breezy and serene east coast, the Nidhe Israel Synagogue lies cradled in the heart of the capital Bridgetown. This Synagogue in Barbados is the ultimate location for members of the Jewish faith planning a Caribbean wedding, not least because it is the most ancient synagogue in the western hemisphere. For over four centuries it has stood quietly and proudly, and while it’s looks do not betray it’s age, it’s rich history is palpable. The stunning interior was restored thirty years ago when the synagogue was bought by descendants of the island’s early Jewish immigrants; and it is truly resplendent and the adjacent museum reminiscent of the perseverance of the Jewish people. The beautiful building combines Gothic renaissance with traditional Barbadian architecture and couples who hold their ceremony here are surrounded by artifacts retrieved for a time forgotten. Delicate glass and metal chandeliers

hang from high ceilings, family and friends have a special vantage point from the balconies propped on tall stone pillars and loved ones will appreciate the history around them. The recently discovered Mikvah is thought to be the only one in this part of the world and is still connected to an underground spring. The synagogue currently serves as a Barbados National Trust building and house of worship and a donation of US$1,500 is requested for use for weddings while the Nidhe Israel Museum made available for small receptions for just US$500. Today, Barbados has a wealth to offer anyone looking for their dream wedding. If you dig deeper than perfect beaches and a turquoise sea, you will discover truly unique locations to make your special day memorable. Sometimes, to step boldly into our future, we must first raise a toast to our past.

esign seems to be inevitably entwined in everything around us. Nature has an effortless way of pulling it all together and surprising us with the sheer brilliance and beauty that is possible. It is the role of fashion and its branches to interpret those natural inspirations and transform them into wearable expressions of self and environment. As consumers and creators, our dilemma often lies in the quest for freedom and self-expression and our need to fit in and conform to the acceptable and present trends. For me it is important to explore what is inside oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self but equally vital to appreciate and understand ones surroundings and using it to uncover deeper parts of ourselves and our creativity. It is a delicate balance that must be achieved.

This collection seeks to combine the things of nature that have always spoken to me and to bring to life the creativity and self-expression that they invoke in me. My inspiration is in everything I see, but mainly the softness and delicacy of the flowers in and around Barbados. The interaction between the wind and trees and the ensuing dance and conversations is a beautiful energy that I want to capture and bring to my work. This is a sophisticated teardrop fascinator trimmed with beaded lace and handcrafted silk petals.

About Shev

hev Kalekshan is the dream of Deniese Dennis, a young Jamaican residing in Barbados. From an early age she displayed a keen interest in fashion and modelling. Being from a humble background, on many evenings the family’s entertainment consisted of Deniese dressing up and modelling for the family. She often, with the help of her mother, transformed her mother’s old skirts into creative clothing for her family’s entertainment. She grew up attending the United Pentecostal Church - where it was customary to wear hats - and practiced with her mom to make flat patterned pillow box hats to complement their church outfits. And so her love for fashion and millinery started. In 2004 she was discovered by Saint International’s Deiwight Peters and

started modelling. She soon discovered that she loved the designing aspect of the industry and endeavoured to follow her dream. While studying psychology at the University of the West Indies, Deniese participated in and organised numerous fashion shows. She has showcased her work in Jamaica (2006, Style Week Jamaica) and Barbados (2011, Barbados Fashion Week). Today, her main focus is in millinery as she seeks to grow her Shev Kalekshan brand. Much of her work is centred around bridal hair accessories, but in the near future she also wants to make wedding gowns. She explains, “I have always loved weddings, as a little girl and teenager I use to day dream about my wedding and what my dress would be like”. What Shev seeks to offer to its clients is an opportunity to discover and express who they are and inspire confidence through fashion. Besides fashion, she has also worked in the area of community development and disaster management. She enjoys watching sunsets, writing poetry and reading. Her dream is to make Shev a success and aid in the improvement of the regions fashion industry. She also enjoys being a mother to her three nieces who reside with her in Barbados. ~

Never has any cultural tradition carried with it more superstitions, warnings or amulets promising good fortune than a couple’s pledge to spend eternity together. Of these, one of the most wellknown and most commercially adopted is the old English poem, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe.” This adage originates in the superstitious middle ages, when it was believed that evil spirits existed everywhere and were particularly active during rites of passage, such as weddings. It was important to use good luck charms to keep the bride and groom safe and any type of talisman, from a horseshoe to a lucky coin was considered a good omen. With the tradition of “Something old, Something new…” comes the assurance of continuity (something old); optimism for the future (something new); acquired happiness (something borrowed); purity and fidelity (something blue); and good fortune and prosperity (a sixpence in your shoe). It has inspired the creative and commercial premises of many bridal collections and designer trimmings, and carries with it various opportunities for selfexpression… “Each day learn something new, and just as important, relearn something old”. - Robert Brault

Something Old is a representation of the bond with the bride’s own family and the past, particularly with the mother or grandmother or even the most distant relations. It is emblematic of continuity. To symbolise this link, brides may choose to carry an heirloom such as a vintage purse, or to wear a piece of antique family jewellery which belonged to a relative. The bride may select something from the mother or grandmother’s wedding gown, such as a piece of a veil, to be used in their wedding bouquet or sewed into the bridal gown. Actress, Jessica Biel, adorned her Giambattista Valli veil with heirloom pearls that came from her grandmother’s wedding day tiara and country singer, Miranda Lambert, donned her mother’s very own wedding dress in her nuptials with Blake Shelton. Something New signifies optimism and eager anticipation for the future. It is a simple exercise to incorporate any number of new items into the nuptials or the wedding attire, but if one seeks to step outside of the box, some personalised options can include a gift of jewellery, presented to the bride by the groom and monogrammed with her new initials. “It is smarter to borrow from nature than to reinvent the wheels” - Philip Emiagwali

Like “Something Old” the symbolic nature of “Something Borrowed” lies in the philosophy that the past carries with it great promise for the future. It is believed that to wear something that was offered by those who had a happy and loving marriage will bestow luck on the bride and groom. A mother or grandmother of the bride or groom can offer a wedding band or engagement ring for the bride to wear as a pendant or on her own finger. Hair pieces, brooches or veils can also be borrowed from previous family nuptials. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wore a 1936 Cartier “halo” tiara, on loan from the queen herself, to her wedding with Prince William. The groom can also choose to carry an old handkerchief that previously belonged to the parents or grandparents, personalised with their initials. “Marry in blue, lover be true.” - 19th century English Proverb

The blue tradition is said to be the eldest of them all, dating back to ancient Israel, Rome and England, symbolising a promise of purity and fidelity. Before Queen Victoria set the standard for marrying in white, blue was the common colour to be wed in, representing purity. From the ultimate in something blue for fashionistas, such as Christian Louboutin’s blue sole wedding shoes, to invisible accessories, such as Oscar de la Renta’s “Something Blue” perfume- this is the tradition that carries the most creative promise. Fans of the HBO series, Sex in the City, no doubt recall Carrie’s blue Manolo Blahnik shoes that she wore in her nuptials to Big in the feature film adaptation. Something blue can be incorporated into various aspects of the wedding. Actress/ model Rebecca Romjin and Kate Middleton both incorporated a blue bow on the inside of their wedding dress, while many brides have opted for a blue garter, possibly even offered by a relative, to double as something borrowed. A blue flower can be included in the bride’s bouquet, or blue could be the dominant colour in the wedding décor. The possibilities are quite extensive. “You remember how it goes? Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence for your shoe?” “I remembered,” I said, thinking of the sewn quarter. During the early 1600’s it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give his bride a piece of silver as a wedding gift. This was symbolically represented by a sixpence coin. It later became a tradition to include a sixpence in the dowry that was given by the bride’s family to the groom. That tradition of the sixpence as a symbol of good luck continues in England today, but is less commonly used in other parts of the world. So, draw a picture with your mind’s eye- it is your wedding day and you’ve never been more beautifulevery detail, every accessory carries with it the promise of a life of luck and love, prosperity, fidelity and happiness. You make your entrance where you have long been awaited by your eager guests. In

On the Saturday 26th May 2012, two successful young New York residents were pronounced husband and wife on the immaculately prepared grounds of Codrington College, in the beautiful parish of St John, Barbados. These two individuals were Nicole Spooner, a New York attor ney, and Kevin Campbell, a hedge fund analyst. The guest list consisted of eighty-five persons, three quarters of which flew in from various countries around the world. Nicoleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main concer n was to make sure her guests had a truly unforgettable time in Barbados! The wedding day was filled with beautiful blue skies, breathtaking sceneries, monumental buildings, talented musicians, elegant decorations, kind and genuine people with plenty of smiles. This ceremony was held on the east lawn of Codrington College overlooking the lush green east coast of Barbados. Emotions ran high when the beautiful bride walked down the aisle to join her future husband. While the bride and the groom signed the register, to seal the deal, their guests were being serenaded by outstanding saxophonist Nicholas Timothy. After the ceremony, a live jazz band entertained the guests on the west lawn, with the magnificent backdrop of a grand pond with beautiful pink flowers sitting on lily pads. Icy cold cocktails and delicious canapĂŠs were enjoyed by the guests as the couple took their first pictures as husband and wife together. There was also a photo booth which everyone, including the couple, frequented and enjoyed.

At 6pm the guests were invited into the elegantly decorated dinning tent where they all took their seats. The Bride and Groom were announced into the dining area to a mix of songs from Barbados and Jamaica, prepared by one of Barbados’s very own DJs, Randy King. After half an hour of partying the guests were finally seated for dinner (a plated menu created by one of Barbados’s most renowned chefs, Michael Hinds, featuring a variety of delicious local foods). After dinner the couple and their guests partied the night away! Kristen and Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wedding was somewhat different from most, as the bride was immersed in studies for upcoming exams and was unable to be as involved in the planning process as she would have liked. As a result, most of our correspondence was with Michael, who did an admirable job of guiding the process along according to Kristenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes. The gardens of Nelson Gay Villa provided the inspiration for the design and this was reflected in the classic white fabric treatments, accented by shades of green. Candles, in a variety of vessels added warmth and a touch of romance to the setting.

The vows have been uttered, the rice thrown, champagne flowed, speeches given, tears shed, fireworks and cake cut; at the end of your special day the single most important thing will be that you captured all of these moments. The brideLIFE team sat down with one of our favourite photographers Steve Cumberbatch from Magical Moment’s to get an insight into the world behind the camera. BL: What is the biggest challenge wedding photographers have on the day? SC: Actually the thing that makes wedding photography so unique, is both it’s strength and it’s greatest challenge. Each wedding has

its own dynamic in terms of personalities, relationships, setting, light, which is what makes the day so special. At the same time itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the unexpected aspect of those dynamics that present a challenge as there is only so much planning you can do to reflect the very best of whatever mix of circumstances that each wedding presents. BL: What is your most popular request by the couple? SC: Most couples come to me because I have a brand that is fairly well known and recognized, so they already know what I do and how I do it; which puts me in a good position in terms of expectations. I always try to reflect the wedding day in a natural storytelling way, recording not just activity but emotion. You get a great sense of personalities and relationships that way.

BL: When you look through your lens, what is your perfect moment? SC: Ahaaa now this is the key. This is my life passion, this is what I call decisive moments, that classic picture that as they say tells a thousand words....and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all captured in a micro second. There is a natural cycle in everything in life, even in a smile or an embrace, there is a point, a peak to that emotion that tells the story most effectively. I think it is both an art and a skill to consistently be able to capture those defining moments; the key is to be always looking for them, to know them when you see them, to be prepared technically to get them, and to help create an environment as a photographer where they flourish naturally. You also have to have some emotional sensitivity, as these moments can sometimes be quite subtle .... a touch of the hands, an extra twinkle of the eye, a little movement in the shape of the mouth, and you have to make that connection to see and feel those moments.

BL: We think the photography is one of the most important aspects of the day, as the man behind the lens how do you work with the couple to keep it flowing, natural and without ‘intruding’? SC: This is the great balance that I strive for, and it is like a dance. The key is to keep the couple’s interest at the center of your actions. There is no one approach that fits all. What I want to do is capture the most decisive moments as naturally as possible, but you are also recording history, so you want to do so as thoroughly as possible. Realistically some people are anxious or tense and then you have the overall timeline of the wedding that has to be respected, so you never want to intrude or control the process, but have the expertise, personality and communication skills to just do enough, so that you get the best out of the everyone.

BL: What about kids? Any tips for those photos? SC: There is only one rule, don’t follow it and you’re in big trouble and that is to work according to their schedule. Most kids are naturals actually, in many cases they are better than adults at letting go of their inhibitions and letting their personalities show but you do have to be patient and aware and attentive. What happens mostly though, is that the parents are feeling all of the pressure , because they (like all of us parents) want their kids to be great right at the point that is needed, so they transfer that anxiety to the kids, and it ends up getting the opposite response. With kids you have to physically get down to their level, make a connection even if it is just a high five, and keep it fun, and fun is definitely not ( if you are two ft tall) having 10 adults shout instructions at you at the same time.

BL: And finally, tell us a little about yourself, your professional portfolio and maybe why you think Barbados is the ideal wedding destination? SC: Anyone who knows me knows that I love and enjoy interacting with people and my greatest love is music. You can image how much I love a wedding!! I actually came into this business unexpectedly; I was on a fast track in the corporate world and I’m sure many people thought I was nuts at the time, but my grandfather and a couple uncles were photographers and I just felt this calling, like it would be a cool thing to do to honour them. I threw myself into it, and took to it like a duck to water! I’ve been doing it now for over 20 years and it’s been a wonderful journey. I am big on continuous improvement, so I was from the start, and still am constantly involved in retooling and training and being mentored. I think I’m in a good place. I’ve got experience, skill and confidence and while

I don’t have the power to control the weather or the circumstances, I think I have the attitude and aptitude to make sure I take away the best of what the day has to offer. Watching the evolution of photography has also been fascinating. I was at the leading edge of the digital revolution and have watched this evolve and seen the opening up of the practice of photography over the last five years in particular to just about everyone. Anyone over the age of 15 years is now actively engaged in some form of activity with photography and I think it’s such a great thing! In a way it underscores just how important my role is, when I be that one person, applying my experience, creativity and passion to recording those moments that will be treasured for years to come by so many. It really is an honour in many ways. As for why Barbados is the ideal wedding destination? Have you seen our beaches? Have you met our people? Have you had a taste of our culture? This really is an island paradise that will charm anyone who visits and give those couples lasting memories of their first steps together into their new lives.

The designs created by the bride used colours, such as, soft blush pink, ivory and champagne in all of her linens and flowers and bridesmaids dresses. Anna and Shane’s dream was to create a wedding where there were lots of food and good music and all their guests will have the best party. They both achieved that by blending their two cultures of Trinidadian and Barbadian dishes together and used the talents of Anna Went to cater for the night. Their other love was Sushi, and they had the best Sushi Chef from Trinidad come to the wedding to prepare on site the most sumptuous sushi station their guests ever had. Guests danced the night away till the early hours of the next mor ning, to music of all genres that was played by a DJ from Trinidad. Anyone who was a part of Anna and Shane’s special night will forever remember the love which was the driving force behind this magical night … these soul mates began their jour ney in life together.

Our Barbados Wedding

While I love Barbados, the island was not my first choice. My husband’s family is from Barbados and St. Vincent. I was born in England and grew up on Kauai so I knew that I would always get married on an island. I was sure that island would be Kauai. My husband convinced me that Barbados was not only a beautiful island but also an equidistant location for our friends and family to join our celebration. He continued on “I proposed to you on Kauai so we have to get married in Barbados.” As you can see this was my husband’s Bajan/Vincy logic, hence we were destined to begin our marriage in Barbados. Well I couldn’t plan a wedding on Island I had never visited, so off we went for a comparison test. Barbados was enchanting, I loved the water; warm beautiful blues hues, calm sea or great body surfing. The amazing sky; spectacular cloud formations, sunrises & gorgeous sunsets. Barbados has some

delicious food; Oistins on Friday nights, flying fish, roti & authentic black cake for our wedding. We found the perfect spot for our wedding at The Crane Hotel perched on a cliff overlooking one of the best beaches I’ve ever seen. I had to admit it Barbados was the perfect island for our wedding. While we were at the Crane, I dared my fiancé to jump off the cliff after the Officiant pronounced us man and wife. We were both crazy enough to do it. The rest is history. I never intended on “trashing the dress” as much as I wanted to share a moment, with the man I love, that we would never forget. The dress didn’t want to be packed away to be admired fifty years later. In fact the dress was stunning & vibrant post trash. Trashing the dress gave it more life! We could not think of a better way to begin our life than to literally jump right in.
