A New look at Thanksgiving
Communist teens Remembering the ’80s
Dear Readers,
I always say that November is the month that I would most gladly cross out of the calendar. It’s wet, everything is wrapped in fog and it’s just unpleasant. Christmas is too far away… and Christmas madness too close. But it’s true that without the eleventh month, we would miss some major anniversaries. In the Czech Republic we celebrate the day when the country got its freedom back and became democratic after 40 long years of communism. In this issue of Gate we looked at the time before 1989. We asked two people who were teenagers at that time to remember what it was like to come of age in a system where free thinking and being way different was suppressed. In their memories, they also talk about more practical things like fashion and music. It might explain the
weird tastes of your parents. We also prepared a little photoalbum from the time of the Velvet Revolution. Of course, we also didn’t forget about the American holiday of Thanksgiving. So you might find out how the English-speaking Indian Squanto was really important to the birth of this popular US celebration. And if you want to test your English skills and compare them with other schools, you can take the Scio test. We also bring you an extra CD with test listening exercises and some music to make your autumn go by faster. Whatever holiday you celebrate, enjoy the second issue of Gate.

Growing Up Under The Communism is part of our history. But what was it really like to grow up under communism? Gate asked two people who were teenagers in the 1970s and 1980s.
s y a D s n a e J t M y C arro Alice Zavadilová,
What is communism? It’s a way of political thinking that believes all people are equal1 and have the same things. It’s a nice idea but in reality it didn’t work. Only the members of the communist party2 had all the power and advantages3. They controlled people’s lives, you couldn’t travel to the West and say anything against the party.
In the ’80s, we all wore jeans called ‘mrkváče’ because they had a shape like a carrot. They made a perfect outfit. I even had a pair of carrot stonewashed jeans called ‘plísňáky’.

West? Forbidden!
Teen loves
We loved western clothes and toys. But we were not allowed4 to travel to the West. At home we talked about the lack5 of freedom in our communist country. But we were quiet about it at school.
When I went to a secondary school, I became interested in English and American music and films. My best friend and I were not interested in disco music like Modern Talking and Samantha Fox. We preferred ’60s music, especially The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Rolling Stones… Every evening after school we listened to the old vinyl records9 that my parents brought from England in 1968.
“Do you want some bony?” The one thing that everybody wanted was good jeans! But you could only buy them from a special store called Tuzex. It was a shop that sold goods6 from the West. But to shop there you needed special money (bony). Money changers called ‘veksláci’ exchanged this money on Wenceslas Square in Prague. They usually asked “Do you want some bony?”. They looked funny in their stonewashed jeans7 and perms8.
Shall I stay or shall I go? Because we were crazy about everything Anglo-American and we didn’t want to live in a communist state, we decided to emigrate with my friend to Canada. Luckily, the Velvet Revolution came...

Do you remember something from your school days? The Soviet Union was untouchable10. One time in my history class, I asked why the Soviet Union declared war on Japan after Hiroshima. The teacher wrote my name down. I knew that I was in trouble, and that I could be an enemy of the system. How about travelling to the West? Well, you could visit the West. But usually the communist leaders made sure that you would come back. For example, my parents wanted to visit West Berlin. First we left our sister behind11 in Prague. It meant that we would return. And we got a document called a ‘výjezdní doložka’ for visiting the West. Every teenager likes music. What did you listen to? The Czech radio had a lot of stations that played ‘dechovka’. Later, I tried

to listen to Radio Luxembourg*, but it was hard to tune into12. I remember when John Lennon died in 1980; the newspapers wrote about it a lot. I was really surprised because you couldn’t find his music anywhere.
2 What is the most difficult thing about living in a communist system? Complete the sentences with ‘Jiří’ or ‘Alice’ so that they are true.
What did people wear? There wasn’t much fashion – we all wore similar clothes. But we had a West German magazine called Burda! My family and friends made clothes using the patterns13 from the magazine.
1 ______ planned to leave the country but didn’t do it. 2 ______ left the country to live abroad. 3 ______ wore hand-made clothes. 4 ______ wore jeans named after a vegetable. 5 ______ had original English records. 6 ______ read about the death of a Beatle.
When did you leave Czechoslovakia? I left the country when I was 19 years old. My dad had escaped two years earlier to the United States and was living in San Francisco. My sister and I went to visit him on holiday and decided to stay. It was hard because we had to leave family and friends, my university, and our home.
Learn a phrasal verb: Grow up It means to get older. “I don’t want to grow up and go to work.”
Take a look at these crazy outfits! This is a photo from a popular film at the time Discopříběh (1987) about a teenager in love.

NOVEMBER 1989 Just the beginning… It all starts with a peaceful student protest on the 17th November 1989. Police stop the protest using violence1. The newspapers and media don’t report2 the story, but the news still spreads3 among the people and more and more demonstrations start against the communist system.
DECEMBER 1989 Losing power…
There are more protests, people across the country go on strike4 and the communist regime starts breaking apart5 – the Velvet Revolution is working! The communist president Gustáv Husák resigns (leaves his job).
Go west… The borders (= lines between countries) to the west open! Now people can go to West

Havel for president A few days before New Year’s Eve the popular leader of the Velvet Revolution, Václav Havel, becomes president of free Czechoslovakia. The people stop their strike and the Velvet Revolution ends! Later in June 1990 Czechoslovakia becomes a democracy! For the first time in 40 years the people are free to vote7 for more than one party in an election8.
AUGUST 1990 The Stones roll into Prague The rock and pop bands from the west that Czechs and Slovaks secretly listened to start to come to the country. One of the first was The Rolling Stones. Finally people could listen to music freely and enjoy rock concerts!
OCTOBER 1990 First pirate private radio A group of friends start a pirate radio station called Radio Stalin (it broadcasts9 under the former statue10 of Stalin in the underground tunnels of Letná). The police try to stop the radio station, but it is too popular. Later it becomes legal11 in 1991 and changes its name to Radio One.
JUNE 1991 … and the Russians go home! Hip, hip, hooray!!! Finally after long discussions the last Russian soldiers leave after more than 20 years of occupation (= foreign army enters a country to take control of it).

Floorball fever
Floorball is the fifth most popular sport in the Czech Republic, with more than 50,000 players. And all you need is a stick, a special ball with holes and lots of energy! But what is floorball? Floorball is a type of indoor hockey, but without the ice. It is played on a small court3 about 40 metres long and 20 metres wide. Players, called ‘floorballers’, try to get the ball into the opponent’s goal, using their stick. There are two teams of six players: five players in the field4 and one goalkeeper5. Players can touch the ball only with their stick; they cannot play with their hands or their heads. Goalkeepers catch the ball with their hands because they don’t have a stick.
The beginning of floorball The game started in Sweden in the early 1970s. Soon Finland and Switzerland started playing it too. Now floorball 8

is popular around the world, even in Nigeria and Pakistan! In the Czech Republic floorball began in the mid’90s. The Czech Republic has seven different floorball leagues with over 1,000 teams. One of the most famous tournaments6 is the Czech Open, which takes place every summer in Prague.
Simply the best The countries that fight for the title of the best men’s floorball team are the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland. Sweden has won the most gold medals. But the world’s most famous player is Mika Kohonen from Finland. The Finnish also won the last floorball championship.

What is your biggest success in sport? Before my accident, I played floorball just for fun and at school. I tried playing it in a wheelchair only two years ago. What do you know about Thanksgiving? People eat a lot of turkey and it’s a big feast before Christmas. But how did it all start and why do Americans love this holiday? Squanto, the English-speaking Indian Luckily for the Pilgrims, the Native Americans in the area were friendly and helpful. And there was one native who spoke English! His name was Squanto. He was kidnapped7 and taken to England when he was young and came back home after a few years. Squanto and other natives showed the Pilgrims how to grow corn and other crops8. At the end of the summer, the Pilgrims had enough food for everyone. To thank the natives for their help, the colonists invited them to a three-day celebration and this was the first “Thanksgiving”.
An official holiday Even though the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, it was just a tradition, not an official celebration. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln was the first president to name Thanksgiving as an official holiday. Other lawmakers changed the date and Thanksgiving is now celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of November.

Prague is known for its castle, churches and bridges. But each year 1.2 milion tourists visit one attraction out of the city centre – Prague Zoo in Troja. When it first opened in 1931, there were only a few animals. Today the zoo has about 5,000 different animals. Many of them are endangered1, such as the Komodo dragon2, the largest lizard3 in the world. Did you know that the zoo can only get the dragon as a gift from the government of Indonesia?
Zoo babies Prague Zoo is famous for its breeding programs4. For example, the zoo experts breed Przewalski’s horse, which is the last wild horse in the world. Over 200 foals (= baby horses) have been born in Prague Zoo. Some of them were put back into the wild.
Get your own tiger! Animal adoption Become an animal parent and adopt an animal of your choice for a year. Your money will help feed them and take care of them. Of course larger animals like bears and elephants are more expensive. People who adopt an animal get free tickets to the zoo and their name is placed next to the animal’s living space. Go to www.zoopraha.cz, and click on the “Pomozte nám” section on the menu and don’t forget to fill in the form. You can also sponsor an animal by sending minimum CZK 100. Sitting around in cages isn’t much fun. So workers plan special activities for animals. They teach sea lions5 and elephants tricks6 or they make ice cream for polar bears.

Badgers are experts in self-defense6. Their skin is very hard, and it is covered by thick fur7. They also have very sharp claws8. And finally, honey badgers have a secret weapon9 – anal glands10. They can produce a terrible smell. It is so bad, that everyone will quickly run away!
Devil the badger is different from most other badgers – he has a steady11 girlfriend. Most badgers in the wild12 are loners13, but Devil had Káca. One day Káca ran away from Devil and left him alone! But Devil is not a badger who likes to think about the past14. He is now in a happy relationship with a new girlfriend, Bára.

Philip (everyone simply calls him “Fry”) was a pizza delivery man2 in 1999, when he had an accident. While he was delivering a pizza to a laboratory, he fell into a cryogenic chamber*. When he gets out on December 31, 2999, he can see all the crazy new things from sci-fi movies: spaceships and robots and other advanced3 technologies. He quickly finds out (= discovers) that the future has everything he needs. Fry starts to work for a cosmic delivery service called Planet Express. He travels around the universe with his colleagues and they have many funny adventures.
The father of the show
Does the animation in Futurama look familiar4? Can you guess the creator of the series? Yes, it’s Matt Groening, who is famous for The Simpsons. But the animation is the only thing they have in common5. Futurama is a very different show. Groening was a sci-fi (science fiction) fan6 as a kid so he used many of his old stories and books for inspiration. Because the show takes place in the future, there are almost endless7 possibilities for stories, jokes, and funny characters. So, if you like silly humor, clever storylines and science fiction, take a journey to the world of Futurama!
Did you know that the word robot is of Czech origin? It was first used by the Czech writer Karel Čapek in his drama R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) in 1920.

Weather and geography Leaves in Europe are generally more yellow than in North America and Asia. Sunny, clear days usually create (= make) more red-colored leaves than cloudy ones. So, the next time you look up at the colorful leaves, remember: it’s just science!
Why do leaves look different? When the leaves on trees start to change color, we know autumn is here. But do you know why this happens at this time of the year? And why are there so many different colors?
Some scientists say that colorful leaves warn the insects in the wintertime. “Hey, I’m red. I am poisonous, don’t lay eggs4 on me!”
Autumn chemistry Leafy1 trees have many natural pigments which give them color. They get their green color from the pigment2 called chlorophyll. Near the end of the summer, there is less light and so trees stop making chlorophyll. The green slowly disappears3 and other yellow and orange pigments show. We can only see these colors when there is less chlorophyll. And if you see red leaves it is because they have a pigment called anthocyanin. It is only produced when chlorophyll production stops. And what about brown? Surprisingly, there is no pigment in brown leaves.
Can you match the numbered leaves on the page with the tree they belong to? a maple (javor), B oak (dub), C birch (bříza), D linden / lime (lípa), E chestnut (kaštan) → solution on page 3
Science
The VIP pigment
Chlorophyll, the green pigment, is very important during photosynthesis. Do you know what photosynthesis is? It’s a chemical reaction: plants breathe CO2 (carbon dioxide) and together with H2O and sunlight they make O2 (oxygen) and glucose. Chlorophyll catches the sunlight.

She is happily married to Edward and they have a baby called Renesmee… but the baby is just the beginning of their problems. The Volturi, the largest and most powerful1 group of vampires, want to kill the Cullens. They think that Renesmee is an immortal2 child, so they don’t want her in the vampire world. The Cullens will do anything to stop them. They even join3 a foreign vampire family. And – shock, horror! – they also join their old enemy, the Wolf Pack•! Will Bella and Edward finally find peace? Dear readers,
don’t be fooled (or don’t be sad); this might not be the end of the saga! After the success of Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn part 1 and Breaking Dawn part 2, there will be one more movie (we think it could be called, After the morning but before lunch...), which could show the FINAL TRUTH about the relationship between Edward and Bella. And maybe in this movie Bella might smile!

Hi Grandma, This is a map of my neighborhood. It’s quite different from the last one. There is a lake where I can go swimming, and a forest beside the lake. There’s also a park not too far away. There is a small duck pond but you can’t swim in it. Our house is on the corner of Hyde Street and Oak Street. There is a church across one street from us. And across the other one, by the lake, there is a small sandwich shop. The school is very close to my house. If go past the school, there is a cinema less than a mile away. I have lots of friends in the neighborhood, too. A boy named Bobby lives on Park Street, next to the school. You can see the school playground from his bedroom window, where we can play sports all day! And the park is very close to this house, too. Then another boy lives on Hyde Street. His name is Michael and he has a swimming pool! Three houses in the neighborhood have swimming pools, as you can see. But I don’t know the people in the other two houses yet. The people in the house next to us have a Porsche! Oh yes, and there is a post office across the street from the park. But I can send you e-mails, so I don’t need to go there. There’s just one thing I don’t like about the new neighborhood. The house on the corner of Oak Street and Park Street has a really big dog in its garden. He scares me, so I don’t like to walk that way. Maybe I’ll have to walk a different way to get to school. I hope you and Grandpa can come and visit soon. Love, Kenny.

čísle 234 705 555 do 16. 11. 2012 objednat u společnosti Scio testování s 20% slevou.
