THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE
The earth is split in the middle3 by an invisible4 line called the equator5. The part above the equator is called the northern hemisphere6 and the part below it is the southern hemisphere. THE EQUATOR
WHAT'S IN EACH HALF?
All of North America and Europe, and most of Asia and Africa are in the northern hemisphere. New Zealand, Australia, and most of South America are in the southern hemisphere. About 90% of the earth’s population* lives in the northern hemisphere. It’s also where most of Earth’s land is. But the southern hemisphere has much more water.

SEASONS7 AND WEATHER
The seasons in the northern and southern hemispheres are opposite to each other. So when it’s summer in America and Britain from the end of June to the end of September, it’s winter in Australia and New Zealand. In July, Americans go swimming and Australians go skiing. From the end of December to the end of March it’s summer in Australia and winter in America. DECEMBER WHY?
The seasons are opposite because of earth’s movement8. In June the northern hemisphere tilts towards9 the sun and the days become longer and warmer. Plants also bloom10 and trees grow back their leaves. When that happens11, the southern hemisphere tilts away12 from the sun, so it’s winter there.

The school summer holiday in America starts in June and ends in August. In Britain it goes from July to August or September. In New Zealand and Australia the summer holiday goes from December to January or February. VOCABULARY
OUTDOOR FUN
In the summertime, children in both hemispheres do lots of different outdoor activities. In Australia children go snorkelling13 and surfing. In New Zealand they go hiking14 and do watersports like kayaking. In America children play team sports like baseball and go camping. In Britain they go to the seaside or to a summer camp*. Summertime is when children everywhere relax away from school and go on trips with their families. So children everywhere get really excited for summer. TASK

A RIDDLE What Am I?
The part of the earth below the equator is called the northern hemisphere. Ninety per cent of the earth’s sand is in the northern hemisphere. From December to March, it’s winter in Australia and New Zealand. In June, the earth’s northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. The summer holiday in America starts in December. Wait. What? Yes, it is. Not here. For us, it is the summer solstice, the shortest night and the middle of summer. For everyone in the southern hemisphere3, it is the longest night. N
A POLAR DAY (6 MONTHS OF DAY)
Long Northern Days On June 21st in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the sun will rise4 at 4:52 a.m. and set at 9:15 p.m. The sun will shine5 for 16 hours and 24 minutes. That’s a long day. But further north, the sun shines for even longer. The northernmost6 town in the world is Longyearbyen in Norway. There, it is already midsummer day7. The sun rose in April and will shine for 124 days. Yes, that’s days, not hours. It’s colder than here, though. Last year on midsummer day, we had temperatures8 of about 30˚. In Longyearbyen, it was less than 10˚.
Long Southern Nights The southernmost9 town in the world is Puerto Williams in Chile (it’s even further south than New Zealand). Puerto Williams is about the same temperature in June as the Czech Republic and Slovakia in December. It doesn’t snow often, but it rains a lot. There are no towns further south, but there are people. Hundreds live at McMurdo Research Station10 in Antarctica. Their sunset11 was at 1:39 p.m. on April 24th and sunrise12 will be at 12:33 p.m. on August 19th.
Countries Without Summers So when it is summer here, it is winter in the south, right? Well, yes and no. Countries close to the equator13 don’t have winter and summer. They have a dry season and a wet season. For the tropical countries north of the equator, it is hot and wet in June. For the ones south of the equator, it is hot and dry in June.

Young Elizabeth The Queen was born in London on April 21st 1926. Her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. She and her younger sister never went to school. They studied at home. When Is Mother’s Day?
Today, people have Mother’s Day in many countries: the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, even China. And in most EU countries, including5 the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This year it’s on May 12th here. In the UK, “Mothering Sunday” was on March 31st. Not Only for Mothers You can also wish a happy Mother’s Day to grandmothers, aunts, sisters, or any other woman who has children.

Here are some FUN FACTS about the moon landing.
1 A Famous Mistake When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon for the very first time, he was supposed to6 say “This is one small step7 for a man, one giant8 leap9 for mankind10.” But he made a mistake. He forgot one word, and said, “one small step for man”. Since “man” and “mankind” are both old ways11 to say “humanity12”, it made some people very confused13.
2 The Changing Flag The astronauts left some things on the moon: footprints14, some tools15 and an American flag. This was to show that the US was first on the moon and winners of the space race. But 50 years is a long time. Today, the colours on the flag are bleached16 away by the sun, and the flag is totally white. A white flag means peace17. Isn’t that nice?

What do you like doing when the weather is hot and the sun is shining1? Do you go swimming? Do you go canoeing2? Are they too boring for you?
Today there are many new water sports. Some are exciting and adventurous 3. Some are more relaxing. Do you know any?
KITEBOARDING
What Is It?
Kiteboarding is a very exciting sport. You stand on a short board4. You wear a harness5. The harness is connected to a kite and the kite pulls you over the water. The kites are much bigger than normal kites. They are between 5 and 15 metres long. You inflate6 them. When you are on the sea, you can jump over waves. When the wind is strong you can fly. In competitions7 people jump and fly and do tricks. When it is cold you can still kiteboard. Some people stay on the beach. They sit in a small kart8. The kart is connected to the kite and the kite pulls the kart across the sand. The good thing about kiteboarding is that you can do it anywhere – you just need wind. So kiteboarders fly and jump with their boards from Scotland to the islands of Hawaii.
Being the Best
There are many kiteboarding competitions around the world. It is a very young sport. The competitions are mostly free-style9. This means that they judge10 entrants11 on how they jump over waves and fly, and the tricks they do. It’s a bit like snowboarding jump competitions but on water with very strong winds. In 2024 in Paris kiteboarding will be one of the Olympic sports for the first time.
The Czech Republic and Slovakia
In the Czech Republic people kiteboard on lakes like Lipno, Rozkoš, Nechranice and Nové mlýny. The sport is becoming popular in Slovakia, too, in places like Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros reservoir12, Liptovská Mara and Vel’ká Domaša. Unfortunately13, the waves aren’t as big as on the sea, but the wind can be strong. Do you want to try it? Maybe kiteboarding seems too dangerous for you. But there is another new water sport. It is calmer14 and more relaxing. What is it? 22

Do you like making things? There are lots of YouTube channels that can teach you how to do tasks, or give you ideas for fun things to make. 5-Minute Crafts HOME is a great example. They have lots of videos with ideas for fun things parents can make. Some of them help make your life easier, some show you how to fix cars, some show you how to make ugly and fashionable10 things, and some are just silly11 and fun. The videos don’t have any music in them, just videos you can watch and understand in any country. Our favourite video is “22 Great Ways to Use Old Clothes”. Someone took Lagun, the little squirrel monkey1, from the zoo. It’s time to talk to the zookeeper2 again. I think I know who has the monkey now.

The zookeeper looks very sad. She knows why we’re here. To finish her story, fill each gap3 with on, at, or in. Some of the words have wrong letters in them. Circle the wrong letters4.
