Viel Spaß also!

Euer RR Team

S Y A D I L O H N M U T U DARK A
As the autumn days become1 dark, some of the holidays also become darker. Read on for some of the holidays around the world this season2.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
2 SONGS
October 31st is a big day for children in the US – it’s Halloween. Lots of children wear costumes3 to school on Halloween. They can be animals, ghosts4, superheroes, or anything they want. Lots of families also decorate5 their houses with ghosts and pumpkins6 with faces called jack-o’-lanterns7. In the evening, most American children go trick-or-treating. What’s that? You go to your neighbours’ houses or to local shops and say “trick or treat”. The person on the other side should give you some sweets – that’s the treat8. Some people in the UK celebrate Halloween, and it is really popular in the US, but Halloween is a holiday for everyone who wants to try it.
NOVEMBER DAYS TO REMEMBER
There are two religious9 holidays after Halloween with similar stories. November 1st is All Saints’10 Day and November 2nd is All Souls’11 Day. All Saints’ Day is a holiday in the Catholic12 religion and the Church of England. It is a day to remember important religious people. All Souls’ Day is more about friends and families. They remember those who have died. On November 2nd some religious families visit cemeteries13 and bring flowers or light candles14. It is not a popular holiday in the US or the UK, but it is popular in Europe.

MEXICO'S
DiA DE LOS MUERTOS
The Day of the Dead15 (or Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a lot like All Souls’ Day. It is a UNESCO-protected16 festival that is very important in Mexico. The Day of the Dead started many, many years ago with the indigenous17 people of Mexico. Today it has some traditions from the past and some Catholic ideas. The Day of the Dead festival happens on November 1st and 2nd all across Mexico and in some South and Central American countries. This is not a day to be sad about the dead. It is about remembering and celebrating friends and family. The celebrations include lots of words beginning with “p” – poetry18, parades19, paper art called papel picado, and the famous painted faces that look like skulls20. Día de los Muertos looks like a fun holiday, but it is also very personal to Mexican people. You should not dress up and paint your face for the Day of the Dead until21 you really understand the meaning and the culture. The animated film Coco is inspired by this Mexican holiday.

Some of the first Europeans to live here came from England on the Mayflower and they landed18 in Plymouth, close to Boston. That’s why my region is called New England. There’s a historical town there now where you can talk to actors19 who show you what life was like then. And they had the first Thanksgiving20 there, too, with the Native Americans.

S N A C I R E AM T S R I F E H T
For many years, Columbus Day was a popular holiday in the US. Now things are changing1. When Christopher Columbus came to North2 America in 1492, many Europeans thought it was a new land. However3, it was not a new land to everyone. There were people already living there: the Native Americans4. Many of them died5 or lost their land when Europeans came to the United States.
To show respect to history and the Native Americans, many cities and states are changing Columbus Day to a new holiday, Indigenous6 Peoples’ Day:
►
Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a state holiday7 in Minnesota, Vermont, Alaska, and South Dakota.
►
Many states do not celebrate8 Columbus Day, but Indigenous Peoples’ Day is also not a state holiday. This is true in Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Florida, and many other states9.
►
Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an official holiday in more than 50 cities.
►
About half of the 50 US states still celebrate Columbus Day. Some of these states are Montana, Arizona, Georgia, and New York.
Both holidays are on the second Monday of October. This year it will be October 8th. Most people don’t go to school or work, but there are not many traditions10 for these holidays. Most people just enjoy the long weekend. TASK

Neil Gaiman Neil Gaiman [niːl ˈɡeɪmən] is an English writer. He is most famous for writing science fiction1 (sci-fi) and fantasy. But he writes a lot of different things and in different styles2. He writes short stories, novels3, screenplays4 for television and films, comic books, poems5, radio plays and children’s books. But he started as a journalist6. He started reading when he was only four years old. As a child, he read a lot. Some of his favourite books were The Lord of the Rings (= Herr der Ringe) by J. R. R. Tolkien and The Chronicles of Narnia (= Die Chroniken von Narnia) by C. S. Lewis. He is very famous now. He has more than 2.5 million Twitter followers7. He was even on the TV show The Simpsons, as himself.

After his parents die13 he is adopted – by ghosts14. He lives with them in a graveyard. The book won both the Carnegie and Newbery Medals. These are very important book awards15. There are now plans to make the book into a film.

Here are some basic2 facts about cricket.
Track 9
Do you know the game of cricket1? About 15% of English (not British) school children play cricket. Cricket is very popular in many countries, especially India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the Caribbean islands. It is an English sport, but only 200,000–300,000 people in Britain watch cricket on television. About 400 million watch in India!
The Playing Area
The playing area is round or oval3. It is called the field. The middle of the field is called the pitch4. There are two wickets5, one at each end of the pitch. They are 20 metres apart.
OUTFIELD 1
INFIELD CLOSE-INFIELD 3
PITCH
How To Play
There are two teams of 11 players plus an umpire6. One team is at bat7 and the other team is in the field. A player called a batsman8 stands by each wicket. A player called the bowler9 throws a ball at one wicket. Bowlers take turns, with six balls each. The batsman tries to hit the ball. Batsmen can score10 points, called runs, by hitting the ball out of the field or by running between the wickets. If the ball hits the wicket, the batsman is out. All the people in the team have a turn at batting. The bowler’s 10 teammates are fielders11. They try to stop the ball. If a fielder catches the ball before it bounces12, the batsman is out. Each fielding position has a name. There is always a wicketkeeper behind the wicket. Sometimes there is a fielder very close to the batsman. This position is called silly13. Can you guess why? When the batting team are all out, they take the field and the other team goes to bat.

Some bowlers throw the ball very fast – more than 150 km/h*. That is less than one second from the bowler to the batsman. There are different types of game. The shortest (and the newest) is only about three hours long. The longest is five days. The islands of Polynesia have a special type of cricket. It is called Kilikiti. The bats are traditional war clubs14 and each team is a whole village. A favourite type of cricket for kids and families is called French cricket. You only need a cricket bat and a tennis ball. There are no wickets: the bowler tries to hit the batsman’s legs! When a batsman is out, the bowler and fielders shout15 “Howzat!” (i.e. “how’s that”). Sometimes they are very excited and they make the word longer: “Howaaaaiiyyyiiizeeeeeaaaaaaah!”

We can only show you some of the most popular ones here.
Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) - 2017 The newest Mario game puts Mario and his friends in the real world.
Bros. or Brothers? “Bros.” is a short way to write the word “brothers” in English. When you read it, you say “brothers”. Sometimes people use the word “bros” to mean brothers or male friends, but this is not good English. So confusing3. Who are the brothers in the Mario games? Donkey Kong (Arcade) – 1981 Mario is in this game, but he’s not called Mario yet. Mario Bros. (NES) – 1983 The first real Mario game. Super Mario Bros. Unboxing3 Some people think these videos are strange4, but they are very popular. An unboxing video is when someone buys something new, usually tech, and films themselves opening the box. They take out all the things in the box and show them in their plastic packaging5, then set up6 the new thing for the first time. Do you watch unboxing videos? What do you think of them?
Reviews7 If you need to buy something new, it’s not enough just to watch someone opening a box. But YouTube has lots of great tech reviews, too. Video reviews can show you much more than text reviews. They can give examples of video and sound quality, and the person making the review can show you how it feels8 to use it.

A TECH YOUTUBER INTERVIEW*: MARQUES BROWNLEE (MKBHD) How old are you, and where are you from? I’m 24 years old and I’m from New Jersey, in the US.
How did you start making YouTube videos? I started when I was only 16 years old, still in high school9. I am very young in my first videos. First I made videos about tech I had at home. People liked them and wrote comments10 asking me to look at other things. I made a video showing people how to install11 a program and it got 3,000 views12 in one day. I was already very popular on YouTube when I was in college13. I was a full-time student14 and a YouTuber. It was a lot of work. I got my first 1,000,000 subscribers15 when I was still a student.
I
Are you still a student now? No, I finished college in 2015. Now I am a full-time YouTuber. My channel has had more than 1,000,000,000 views now, and has more than 6,600,000 subscribers. My most popular video has 19,819,557 views and 8,843 comments right now.
What is special about your channel? I do a lot of fun things. I talked to Kobe Bryant (a basketball player) about his favourite tech. That was fun. And I have Smartphone Awards every year for the best smartphones.
Why do you make so many videos about smartphones? Smartphones are expensive. Choosing a smartphone is a big decision16. I want to help people find the best one for them.
Do you do unboxing videos? Yes, sometimes I do. But I don’t only open the box. I also talk about the tech and give people some information about it. *This interview was compiled17 from other interviews and online information.

I love toys and it is important that I have toys that are for me alone. WALKS. Going for a walk with you is the best thing. Please give me time to smell things. Smells are really important to me (remember your socks?) and I use my nose to see what is going on in the neighbourhood8. Walks are healthy for you, too. A STABLE9 ROUTINE10. I like things to be the same. Always. That means I like to go for walks at the same time every day. Always tell me when I do something you like. Always tell me when I do something wrong. I think you are angry with me and it makes me very stressed. And when you meet a new dog don’t look into its eyes. Let it smell you first. CLOTHES. I am not a human27.
