2011 PRODUCT

Our vision.

NEMO is founded on a commitment to adventure, to the fearless pursuit of uncharted paths, in everything from the equipment we build to the way we run our business. Bravely exploring new directions opens our minds, brings us closer to the people we depend on, sharpens our wits, and lifts our spirits. Adventure gives us purpose and perspective. It makes us humble and proud. We believe meaningful adventures are possible for everyone, anywhere. Possible, that is, if you bring the will, the imagination, and the right gear.

NEMO’S CUSTOM-BUILT CONFERENCE TABLE, THE NEXUS OF DESIGN INNOVATION

2011 PRODUCT OVERVIEW There is great responsibility in bringing more product into the world. New products, like new trails cut through the wilderness, should always bring significant improvement over existing choices, add commensurate value to our lives, and do the least amount of harm. From the introduction of our first tents in 2005 to our current lineup of over 100 products, we have remained absolutely committed to making the finest products for the enjoyment and appreciation of the outdoors.

LIGHTER

NEMO offers a comprehensive line of tents designed and engineered to support nearly every kind of outdoor adventure from a backyard campout to an Antarctic expedition. We’ve made refinements to some of our existing models, and enhanced our lineup by adding five new tents for 2011, including the Obi™ series, a new standard in the world of ultralight.

WARMER

We’ve added insulated models to our Cosmo™ series, developed an awardwinning new backpacking pad series called Astro™, and unveiled perhaps the lightest full-coverage sleeping pads on the planet, the Zor™ series.

GREENER

Manufacturing involves a lot of prototyping and sampling, scraps, and occasionally seconds. To reduce this waste as much as possible, we upcycle these materials into an innovative line of products called Ditto™.

LIGHTER Innovative Design When you stop and think about it, today’s backpacking tents are remarkably efficient in their use of material. What else produces so much usable space for so little weight, never mind that can be pinned down on dirt and rocks, withstand rain, snow, or high winds? The less weight we have to carry, the further and faster we can go. So we’re always looking to save weight; the key is to make tents lighter without decreasing interior space or eliminating features. The only way to do that is with a new generation of technical hyperlight materials. Enter OSMO™ Elite. For 2011, we’ve changed the space to weight ratio with revolutionary 10 and 20 denier fabrics, which have allowed us to make some of the lightest products on the market without nixing any headroom, skimping on vestibule space, or asking you to sleep on the bare ground. Check out the new Obi™ Series for proof that lighter doesn’t have to mean lesser.

OBI™ ELITE 1P, OUR LIGHTEST POLED TENT

AIRSUPPORTED TECHNOLOGY® NEMO’s AirSupported Technology® is a system of low pressure inflatable tubes, which we call airbeams, and lightweight pumps that provide a high performance alternative to traditional poles. Airbeams are made of two layers like a bicycle tube and tire. An outer layer provides the shape, strength, and puncture resistance, and a thin replaceable inner bladder holds the air. Airbeams have some remarkable properties that can be a real advantage in the backcountry. In every AST® tent model, airbeams make the setup of your tent fast and simple. They are also easier and less expensive to repair than metal poles. NEMO’s AST® also stands up better to high winds, since there are no poles to break, and can be packed into smaller and more irregularly shaped spaces like the hull of a kayak or panniers on a bike.

LONG TREKS ON SKATE DECKS THE LONG TREKS ON SKATE DECKS CREW includes three audacious adventurers who enjoy covering long distances in foreign lands via longboard. Adam, Paul, and Aaron have longboarded 2000 km across Morocco and 2400 km across Peru and Bolivia. Traveling these distances with everything on their backs, they rely on the durability, dependability, and minimal pack size of AST®. “Setting up our tents in random fields is how we do things,” writes Adam on the NEMO Adventure Anywhere blog. “Why pay for a hostel or hotel when you can be out in nature, breathing in the cold refreshing night air, snuggling up in your sleeping bag, not getting sleep due to the violent winds (hahaha), and waking to some of the most spectacular sunrises?” For more on their latest adventures, check out the NEMO blog or longtreksonskatedecks.com.

AirSupported™ Features Remarkable Strength When properly inflated, NEMO’s airbeams can be considerably stronger than traditional aluminum tent poles. In deflection testing, a Morpho™ 2P airbeam withstood more than twice the downward force compared to a high strength aluminum pole. One of the great advantages of airbeams is that even if you bend them all the way to the ground, they simply spring back into shape. Optimal air pressure for a NEMO airbeam is between 7 and 9 psi. NEMO pumps are designed to quickly deliver exactly the right amount of pressure, without over inflation.

AIRBEAM TESTING

Easy Setup Airbeams make setup of our AST® tents fast and simple. Velcro® straps keep the airbeams connected to the tent, so all you need to do is stake the tent out and inflate the airbeams with your included NEMO pump. There’s no fussing with separate poles. Inflation times range from 10–15 seconds for a Gogo™ airbeam to 30–50 seconds for a Morpho™ 2P airbeam. If it’s raining, you can stake your tent out, get inside, and take your time pumping up the airbeams while staying dry. Take down of an AST® tent could hardly be faster or more straightforward. Simply attach the deflation caps to the airbeams, and within seconds you can have your tent stowed away in its stuff sack.

EASY SETUP

Small Packed Size AST® tents can be packed into smaller and more irregularly shaped spaces than poled tents since there are no rigid elements. Leave your stuff sack at home, and stuff your AST® tent in the empty nooks and crannies of your pack. Their flexible packed shape and size facilitates more efficient packing in your kayak or canoe hull, bike pannier, or motorcycle side case.

MOTO™

ESSENTIAL OVERLAND KIT Many great adventures involve a vehicle, whether a bicycle, kayak, floatplane, or motorcycle. Packed size can especially be a concern when panniers, side cases, or storage compartments have small available space and specific dimensions. Moto™ 1P utilizes our AirSupported Technology® and a thoughtful combination of design features to provide a spacious interior and 37 inches of sit-up interior height in a package that weighs less than 3 lbs and could fit inside your motorcycle helmet. Moto™ 1P includes our ExoFly™ front canopy, which creates the option of a roomy interior with mesh for summer breezes or a vestibule for stormy weather. The Swallowtail patterning at the foot end with mesh vents allows you to tension the shelter above your sleeping bag to maximize interior ventilation. Using the included Integrated Pump, inflation takes about 30 seconds. WILLIAM KRAMER / Hollis, New Hampshire, USA

MORPHO™ EXPLORING THE FUTURE

There is no substitute for confidence in your gear, especially in your tent. We’ve carefully fine tuned the Morpho™ series tents to be the perfect all-weather shelters for extended travel. Morpho™ 1P is the solo version of our flagship Morpho™ 2P tent. Thanks to smaller diameter airbeams, Morpho™ 1P inflates faster and packs considerably smaller than its bigger brother, but retains the same comfort and spaciousness. Morpho™ 1P’s waterproof walls and breathable roof panel reduce weight, while smart crossbow-style vents provide good ventilation and funnel condensation out of the tent. Morpho™ 2P can handle it all: vicious downpours, high winds, and early season snow. Climate control is no problem for Morpho™ 2P with its full canopy of high-performance OSMO™ waterproof/breathable fabric, ExoFly™ front vestibule, and vents throughout. WILLIAM KRAMER / Stanley, Idaho, USA

MORPHO™ FEATURES 1. ExoFly™ Retractable Vestibule Morpho™ tents feature a unique morphing vestibule. The tent is designed to store gear inside where it can stay dry and close at hand, but if you need a temporary vestibule, simply unclip and retract the inner tent from the fly. 1

2. Morpho™ 1P’s expansive rear vent adds a feeling of openness to the tent and maximizes air circulation. Since the vent is mesh on the outside, it is easily adjustable from the inside to deal with changing weather conditions. Even if it’s raining, you can zip the vent shut but still use the small strut at the top to make a rainproof vent opening.

3. Rear scoop vent in Morpho™ 2P is a reinforced hoop that keeps the rear vent deployed at all times, allowing low-tohigh ventilation. The vent construction is fully seam taped and weatherproof. 4. Boot Cut™, located between the inner tent and vestibule in Morpho™ 2P, shields two pairs of shoes or a small pack from rain. This protected area adds versatility without compromising your usable tent living space.

POLE SUPPORTED TECHNOLOGY NEMO and our pole manufacturing partner, DAC, are constantly developing new aluminum pole technology, hardware, and frame configurations to maximize the strength, wind resistance, interior volume, weight, and usability of our tents. We pursue simplicity and pure geometric forms wherever possible. Classic arch shapes are used to fend off top loads and catenary curves transfer tension through fabric panels. Every design element is deliberate and has a functional purpose, much like nature itself.

COMMITTED: 50 CLASSIC CLIMBS MARK AND JANELLE SMILEY are on a quest to become the first people (and couple) to climb all of the routes in the famous 1979 book, 50 Classic Climbs of North America. The endeavor involves tackling more than 164,000 vertical feet of technical terrain on a road trip that will span more than 25,000 miles. To give an idea of the complexity of this project, Hummingbird Ridge on Mt. Logan, Canada’s highest peak and one of the 50 Classic Climbs, has never seen another summit since its first ascent in 1965 by the authors. Along the way, the Smileys have captured nail-biting HD footage and posted short videos on their website. So far, the NEMO Ambassadors are over halfway to their goal, having completed 27 of the 50 climbs. They have a three year plan of action that will make you wish you were along for the ride. You can keep up with their progress via updates on the NEMO Equipment blog or www. smileysproject.com.

Pole Supported Features DAC High Strength Aluminum Poles NEMO’s DAC Featherlite® NSL poles use a unique method for connecting at the ferrule (short tube inserts) which saves weight and improves strength. This connection allows two poles of different diameter to mate together without additional parts or areas of high stress. NEMO’s DAC Featherlite® poles are up to 15% lighter than aluminum poles of comparable strength, and are less susceptible to failure because pole linkages are based on extrusion instead of gluedin inserts. All of NEMO’s DAC poles are GREEN™ anodized, which avoids the use of toxic heavy metals in the finishing process.

Superior Hardware The DAC Jake’s Foot Corner Anchor System makes tent setup faster and easier. The main poles attach to the anchors by ball and socket. With the poles locked in place, setup is easy for a single person.

JAKE’S FOOT

The Intersection Hub and Swivel Hub are both designed to capture poles where they intersect. Locking the poles together at their intersection points dramatically increases the rigidity of the tent frame, allowing for better resistance to gale force winds and snow loading. Ball Caps™ are used in place of locking pole tips and grommets to secure the ends of ridge poles. The Ball Cap™ snaps onto an aluminum ball tip at the end of the ridge pole and can be released by twisting.

BALL CAPS™

Ergonomic Clips are easy to use and more durable than standard pole clips. Simply twist the clip to release the tent from the poles. Aluminum Hubs allow multiple poles to intersect at a single point. This enables a unique pole architecture to be created that allows free-standing support while minimizing the total pole weight for the tent. POLE HUB

CAD-Optimized Pole Configurations We use 3D modeling programs to carefully consider our pole configurations and evaluate factors like weatherproof entries/exits, usable interior volume, and versatile vestibule space. Analyzing our measurements in computer modeling programs allows us to optimize various aspects of the tent efficiently.

Versatile Setup Options

CAD OPTIMIZATION

NEMO pole supported tents can be set up in a variety of configurations to suit your adventures. Unique overhanging vestibules can be rolled out of the way, even in light rain, allowing air to flow freely through the tent. All double wall tents can be set up with just the fly, poles, and footprint to create a lightweight tarp structure. More protection needed? Set up the inner tent last to keep your interior space dry inside. If the skies are sunny, ditch the fly, and enjoy the fresh air through the airy mesh of the inner tent. VERSATILE SETUP

META™ BEYOND A TREKKING TENT

The Meta™ series is a striking example of the efficiency and weight savings possible with well designed trekking pole tents. They uphold the NEMO standard for comfort and usability, with tall peak heights, generous overall length, and multiple well-placed vents. A fixed webbing length to the vestibule anchor makes setup quick and straightforward. The unique vestibules on Meta™ 2P overhang the inner tent so they can be rolled back out of the way even in light rain, allowing air to flow freely through the tent. Smart side vents promote cross ventilation, funnel condensation out of the tent, and provide extra head room when guyed out. WILLIAM KRAMER / White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, USA

META™ FEATURES 1. For easy setup, stake out each anchor point and insert/expand your trekking poles until the tent is properly tensioned. Oversized grommets locate the tips of trekking poles and reinforced areas at the top of the tent receive the pole handles.

1

2. Head and foot vents can be deployed by staking out the guy-out cord at the side of the tent. Reinforced hoops keep the upper vents open at all times, allowing low-to-high ventilation.

2

3. Dual vestibules/entries on Meta™ 2P eliminate jostling for position and gear storage. 3

4

4. Vestibule options give you all-weather versatility. Deploy one or both doors for full protection from the elements.

PENTALITE™ ENTER THE FIFTH DIMENSION

Compared to conventional square pyramid designs, Pentalite™ 4P offers a near rectangular sleeping area and a roomy additional triangular vestibule area. Convert the Pentalite™ 4P shelter into a fully weatherproof and bugproof tent by adding the optional Wedge™ inner tent. To minimize weight, the Wedge™ only has one mesh wall that zips into the Pentalite™ 4P shell, while the floor attaches along the three remaining sides. A clever detail in the optional Wedge™ inner tent floor allows the included monopole to pass directly to the ground, preventing abrasion of the floor fabric. It’s also possible to support Pentalite™ 4P by lashed trekking poles or a kayak paddle. Unique volumizing side vents guy out the tent and increase interior volume. WILLIAM KRAMER / Park City, Utah, USA

ESPRI™ FEATURES 1. A Rear Scoop Vent keeps the rear vent deployed at all times, allowing low-to-high ventilation. The vent construction is fully seam taped and weatherproof. 2. Aggressive cutouts in the fly keep excellent tension and allow air circulation, even in the rain.

3

3. Interchangeable vestibules provide flexibility. The simple Ultralight Fly Door is a good way to save weight if you don’t need a vestibule. For just a few more ounces, the Standard Vestibule provides extra storage outside. If you travel with trekking poles, the optional Trekking Pole Vestibule (shown) adds significant storage space and a spacious dry entry.

4

4. Included Gear Loft adds overhead storage without compromising floor space or elbow room. The mesh Gear Loft has a gear storage pocket and two Light Pockets™ which diffuse light from your headlamp and cast an even glow throughout the tent interior.

LOSI™ OUNCES OF WEIGHT, TONS OF COMFORT

The Losi™ series has a unique pole configuration which provides exceptional strength and nearly vertical walls for maximum interior space. Setup is straightforward thanks to ball and socket attachments for the pole ends and an intuitive symmetrical design. Losi ™ series tents feature two doors and two vestibules, eliminating jostling for position and gear storage. With a full mesh canopy for summer evenings and a rain fly with large cutouts for air circulation on stormy nights, Losi™ tents are essential for the avid backpacker and camper. WILLIAM KRAMER / Saco River, Maine, USA

LOSI™ FEATURES 1. Jake’s Foot Corner Anchor System makes tent setup faster and easier. The main poles attach to the anchors by ball and socket. When the fly is attached, the Jake’s Feet act as cantilevers to pull the corners of the inner tent closer to the ground. 2. Unique pole configuration adds significant interior volume. The ridge poles run the long direction on the tent and terminate above the ground, providing nearly vertical walls on all sides of the tent.

EXTREME CONDITIONS TECHNOLOGY When your adventures take you to the barely inhabitable, most desolate and remote regions of our planet, you need our Extreme Conditions Technology to keep you safe and comfortable. We’ve developed a long list of features and technologies designed specifically to combat problems faced by alpinists and other winter adventurers.

NEW ROUTES IN THE MIYAR VALLEY LONG-TIME NEMO AMBASSADORS CAMILO LOPEZ AND ANNA PFAFF spend much of the year climbing in distant lands, often establishing new, big routes. They are serious about their climbing and need a tent they can rely on when enduring long weather delays. Most recently, they took Tenshi™ to the Miyar Valley in the Indian Himalaya and established two new routes. They successfully completed the first ascent on the North Face direct of Dome Peak (5700m) on a very steep and technical face after a 19 hour round-trip push. After waiting out ten days of bad weather, they decided to retreat, but first needed to retrieve their gear cache. Here’s Camilo’s report of how events unfolded while establishing the second route: On the morning of the 11th we woke to perfect blue skies. Simul-climbing moderate terrain on an exciting ridge, we reached a point where it ended below a headwall. On a good ledge we changed into rock shoes and contemplated the weather. We were close to the top, so decided to go for it. I led a full 70m pitch up a 5.10 finger crack through exposed, solid rock, and then Anna took over the lead and reached a roof, which she bypassed by a rightward traverse that proved to be the crux of the entire route. I followed, to find her on a hanging belay just a couple of meters below the summit. To reach the top involved crossing an exposed overhang with no protection. My lead was only a few minutes but felt like hours. Soon we were both hugging each other on the very top, having completed the 600m Southeast Ridge at III 5.10c.

Extreme Conditions Features OSMO™ Waterproof/Breathable Fabric Featured in Tenshi™ and Moki™ NEMO’s waterproof/breathable (W/B) fabric, OSMO™, continues to set the standard for breathability in single wall tents. OSMO™ is a 40D high-tenacity polyester ripstop with a hydrophobic microporous PU coating that is extremely breathable across a broad range of humidities. The polyester is naturally UV-resistant and doesn’t sag when wet. OSMO™ is also highly durable, chemical-resistant, lightweight, and abrasion-resistant.

OSMO™

APRI™ Featured in Tenshi™, Moki™, and Isopod™ Series The Air Permeable Removable Insulation™ (APRI™) is a custom fitted liner, designed to increase the interior temperature of the tent. APRI™ is a breathable, metalized fabric that acts much like a space blanket, reflecting the heat inside, making life below zero a little more inviting.

APRI™

Snow Skirt Featured in Tenshi™, Moki™, and Isopod™ Series When the weather gets rough outside, snow skirts are a special feature that help block wind from entering your tent. When weighed down with snow, they also protect you from snow drift and spin drift.

SNOW SKIRT

Internally Deployable Vents Featured in Tenshi™, Moki™, and Isopod™ Series Many ECT tents have large overhead vents designed to increase airflow and reduce condensation. Each vent is equipped with a small strut along the vent opening for easy adjustment from the inside. Vents can be closed during severe weather.

1. Dual Entries/Vestibules Two doors and two vestibules eliminate jostling for position and gear storage. Both vestibules can be used in multiple configurations depending on weather conditions and your need for privacy.

3. Overhead deployable vents on the fly and zipper flap vents on each vestibule give you plenty of options for air circulation. Alti Storm™ 3P’s fly pole creates a large internally deployable vent (shown).

2. Unique Pole Configuration The ridge poles run the long direction on the tent and terminate on the ground. This design feature significantly increases the strength of the tent, adds interior volume, and provides nearly vertical walls on all sides of the tent.

4. UVX windows on the vestibules allow you to check conditions outside without exposing your gear to the elements. The window is optically clear, non-yellowing, non‑clouding, UV resistant, and remains flexible in cold temperatures.

ALTI STORM™

BRING ON THE WEATHER If your definition of adventure includes heavy snows, wind-driven sand, or sideways rain, we’ve crafted the perfect armor for your battle against the elements. The Alti Storm™ tents are descendents of the Losi™ models, but with burlier frames and more enclosed canopies. The ridge poles continue to the ground, buttressing the tent against high winds, and the inner tent canopy is entirely breathable ripstop for blocking out driven wind, sand, and snow. The fly is full coverage with expansive vestibules and overhead deployable vents. Every exterior anchor, guyout, and zipper pull is reflective for easy spotting in the abyss of night. A total of four Light Pockets™ built into the corners of the tent provide an easy way to illuminate the interior. JED CONKLIN / Rattlesnake Range, Montana, USA

WARMER Outdoor Comfort For a few of us, the journey is about testing pain tolerance. But for most of us, it’s about the engagement with each other and with the landscape, the sound of dry leaves under our boots, the feel of sandstone on our finger tips, warm rain washing the dust off our packs—the pure and profound satisfaction of being outside and having an adventure. The right gear should not only make the journey possible, but should make it comfortable. The right gear can let us go places we shouldn’t be able to survive, and not just explore, but thrive. For 2011, we’ve developed new sleeping pads for anywhere and anytime, like our new Astro™ Insulated with Pillowtop™, winner of the 2011 Editors’ Choice Award from Backpacker magazine. Even the best days are better with a good night’s sleep.

TUO™ DOUBLE THE COMFORT

The Tuo™ series of inflatable sleeping pads brings a new level of comfort to the backcountry. Literally. The Tuo™ sleeping pads have a thin film inside that weighs almost nothing and divides the pad into two separate airtight levels, each with its own valve. Not only does this give complete redundancy in the event of a puncture, but it also means the base layer can be inflated firm for protection from rocks and roots, and the top layer kept partially inflated for maximum comfort. New for 2011, the Luxury model has a softer and stretchy top layer of fabric for an even plusher feel. All Tuo™ models include a stuff sack, compression strap, and repair patches. WILLIAM KRAMER / Stanley, Idaho, USA

TUO™ FEATURES 2

1. 75D polyester fabric is laminated with a high bond polymer film that keeps the fabric airtight and promotes high weld strength. The subtle NEMO shield embossing on the exterior helps increase tear strength and abrasion resistance of the fabric. 2. Easy inflate/deflate valves make

setup a breeze.

3. Two independently inflated foam

layers maximize comfort and add redundancy. The top layer of foam is cross drilled  to reduce weight and packed size. 4. Tuo™ pads pack small with the 4

ASTRO™ BACKCOUNTRY SUPERSTAR

Many miles from the hum and buzz of workaday life, the last thing you want to disturb your deep sleep is a pesky root or a fistful of gravel. Astro™ pads include a stuff sack, compression strap, and repair patches.

ZOR™ ULTRALIGHT TO THE CORE

We developed a unique method of constructing Zor™ pads to provide the optimal combination of weight and insulation for minimalist exploration. Most lightweight pads utilize cutouts in their internal foam to reduce mass. NEMO has taken this a step further and combined both vertical and horizontal drilling (2-Axis Coring™) to reduce foam weight to the minimum without losing comfort or structural integrity. 2-Axis Coring™ allows Zor™ pads to pack smaller while still having an inch of protection from rocks and roots. All Zor™ pads come with a stuff sack, compression strap, and repair patches.

GREENER Take Care We chose the hue for NEMO Green back in the spring of 2004 by sampling a birch tree leaf outside our shop in New Hampshire. We wanted our tents to stand out in the retail store, but to blend into the woods. After all, our eye should be on the landscape. And that’s been an important guiding vision for us ever since. Though we love our gear and love losing ourselves in a surf session, or out on the hiking trail, we can’t lose perspective on what really counts—to preserve the places that make adventure possible. Here at NEMO we’re working to reduce our footprint through smart design, sustainable operations, and repurposing the byproducts of manufacturing. Check out our Ditto™ line to see how scraps, seconds, and old samples can be reborn into new solutions for daily living.

DISASSEMBLED NEMO TENTS READY FOR DITTO™ PRODUCTS

DITTO™ UPCYCLED PRODUCTS FOR DAILY LIVING

Along with donations of production waste from partner companies including DimensionPolyant®, ITW Nexus, and Sterling Rope, hundreds of tent samples have been diverted from landfills to make our series of Ditto™ products. After tents are disassembled here in our Nashua studio, totes are sewn locally in New Hampshire. Backpacks include an integrated stuff sack to pack small for easy storability. Ditto™ wallets are optimized to use nearly every square inch of the manufacturing seconds generously donated to the project, and the unique closure keeps cash and cards secure when you’re on the move. We hand pick pieces, preserving details from the original tent (zippers, webbing, guy out loops, Velcro®, screened logos, mesh, etc.) that are sometimes useful and sometimes just add an element of style. Rarely are two Ditto™ products the same. See Ditto™ Product Chart on page 73 for information on specific models. SUZANNE TURELL / Silver Lake, New Hampshire, USA

LATER Adventure Anywhere™ In only a year, NEMO will be a decade old. With that milestone around the corner, we’ve been reflecting on our journey so far, where we’ve come from, and what’s ahead on the trail. Each year has brought interesting opportunities, growth, change, and lessons learned. Looking back on all the challenges, memories, and adventures, there are many ways we might measure progress, but none that means more to us than seeing a community grow around our products and our mission. Last year’s 164 blog posts really helped us connect with you, and it’s that connection that keeps us inspired and moving in the right direction. Thank you for being part of the team.

We’re a small company doing everything possible to make the highest quality and most innovative products for outdoor adventure. There are no suits at NEMO. Our office is filled with surfboards, bikes, and climbing gear. Mondays start with trading stories about the weekend’s activities: backcountry skiing on Mt. Washington, mountain biking in the Northeast Kingdom, rock climbing up at Cannon cliffs. Every new adventure brings new knowledge and a chance to further refine our designs. We don’t stand still for long, so keep an eye on NEMO. We have many new products in development and we’re always working to evolve our designs.

founded:

2002 NEMO’s official birthday is APRIL 24, 2002.

Cam Brensinger incorporated NEMO with the intention of bringing high-level design and engineering to the outdoor industry. Much of the first year was spent learning to sew and pattern while developing NEMO’s AirSupported Technology®.

2003

2006

Sales expanded to outdoor specialty shops in the US. The company assembled a top-notch team of designers and engineers, built a lab for product development, and forged relationships with industry suppliers. An elite group of Navy SEALs were impressed by NEMO’s AST® tents. After successful testing by the SEALs, NEMO developed new commercial and military tents. NEMO’s AST® receives Reader’s Digest America’s 100 Best award.

2007

The first AirSupported™ prototypes were completed and NEMO began developing its inaugural tent line. With its first employees hired, the team started consulting work to stimulate creativity and expand its expertise. The first projects included working on spacesuits and developing habitat module concepts for the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts.

Morpho AR™ was named “Coolest New Technology” by Backpacker and Tenshi™ received a B.I.G. award from Rock and Ice. International distribution starts to take off. NEMO created the Adventure Anywhere™ tagline which embodies the company’s idea that memorable and meaningful adventures can happen anywhere from the backyard to Mount Everest.

2004

2008

NEMO debuted its first generation of AST® tents and Extreme Conditions Tents to the outdoor industry. Team NIKE/Balance Bar asked NEMO to co-develop a tent for adventure racing. Burrito™ wins 2004 Good Design Award from Chicago Athenaeum.

NEMO pushed sustainability to the top of the priority list

and created G.R.N.™ (Green Rethinking by NEMO). The company adopted Jenness Beach, a favorite local surf spot. NEMO debuted its Ditto™ line of upcycled products, first sleeping pad, and a backcountry pillow. Moki™ won Backpacker’s Best All-Around Mountaineering Tent and top honors from Rock and Ice. Overland Journal gives Morpho AR™ their Value Award.

ofthe

2005

NEMO receives many major awards: overall winner of the 2005 ISPO BrandNew Award; AST® is named among the year’s Most Amazing Inventions by TIME; Sako™ is named one of Popular Science’s Best of What’s New; Sako™ wins ID Magazine’s Design Distinction Award; and Tenshi™ receives Editors’ Choice from Climbing.

2009

Losi™ 3P won big with the Gear of the Year award from Outside, Best All-Around 3 Person Tent from Backpacker and Gear of the Year from Men’s Journal. Tenshi™ was named Editors’ Choice from Backcountry. The NH Division of Economic Development gave NEMO their Innovation Rocks! award.

2010

NEMO expanded its tent line from 12 to 20 models and introduced its Modular Sleep Systems. Meta™ 2P was awarded Editors’ Choice from Backpacker. NEMO continues to thrive as a young company 2009 committed to making innovative and high 2010 quality equipment for outdoor adventure and survival, while protecting the people and places that make adventure possible.

TENT CARE & REPAIR  To Give Your Tent a Longer, Happier Life SEAM SEALING YOUR TENT Although most NEMO tents are fully taped and waterproof, two mountaineering tents (Tenshi™ and Moki™) are sewn through certain areas for extra strength. These tents must be seam sealed to be waterproof. Before first use, locate seams on the tent that require Seam Grip®. This includes places where stitches cannot be seam taped (all pole wraps, Light Pocket™ attachments, STAT™, etc.), and any place where more than two faces of fabric are joined in one seam, like the vent seams. Do not apply seam seal to the zipper.

Cut off tip of Seamseal™ applicator.

Carefully apply Seamseal™ to required stitching using several thin coats to cover seams.

If debris has accumulated in tent, shake it out before packing.

Store in a loose breathable bag, in a cool and dry environment.

Drying your tent thoroughly will prevent mold and mildew formation.

If the tent has signs of mildew, use McNett MiraZyme™ and soak the tent following the instructions on the bottle.

[ HINT: Dust with talcum powder before repacking. ]

STORING YOUR TENT When storing your tent, be sure to thoroughly clean and dry the tent to avoid mold and mildew. Store your tent in a cool and dry environment. [ HINT: Store your tent in the closet, it is usually cool, dry, and free from harmful UV rays. ]

CLEANING MOLD OFF YOUR TENT Mold and mildew not only smell bad, but also damage the waterproof coating on your tent. Prolonged exposure to mildew will cause seamtape to delaminate and make your tent leaky. The best care is preventative: always thoroughly dry out your tent before storing it. Once your tent is damaged by mildew, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to repair it. [ HINT: See NEMO’s Blog for a homeopathic recipe to rid mold from your tent.]

67 • 68 | TENT CARE & REPAIR

Let dry for 24 hours.

USING A POLE REPAIR SLEEVE If a pole breaks when you’re out in the field, use the included pole repair sleeve and some duct tape to temporarily fix your pole. The pole sleeve can be wedged into place with a stick if you don’t have duct tape on hand. [ HINT: If necessary, a tent stake or branch can be used to splint your damaged pole sections. ]

Be careful of sharp and jagged pole ends.

Slide the pole sleeve over the damaged pole sections.

Tape (or wedge) the sleeve in place.

If you can’t find the leak, place the pad in water and look for bubbles.

Clean and dry area of the leak, and cover with Seam Grip® to at least 1/4”

Keep the sleeping pad level and let the repaired patch dry for 24 hours.

Fully deflate airbeam.

Remove bladder through Velcro® access panel and find leak.

REPAIRING SLEEPING PAD LEAKS Thorns, rocks, and other sharp objects can puncture the airtight fabric of your sleeping pad causing a leak and a rough night’s sleep. [ HINT: If you are out in the field and need to speed up the cure time, mix in a few drops of water with the Seam Grip®. The patch should be fully cured in about 2 hours. ]

beyond the hole.

REPAIRING A LEAK IN YOUR AST® TENT Repairing a leak in your AST® tent is as easy as changing your bicycle tube inside the tire. If the leak is small, the bladder may simply be repaired with a small sticker patch placed over the hole. This patch is included in the tent repair kit. If the puncture in the bladder is large, the entire bladder will need to be replaced. [ HINT: Pull a spare bladder into place by tying it to the end of the damaged bladder. Or tie cord to the end of the bladder before removing to help get the bladder back into place once repaired. ]

Reinstall bladder, making sure not to twist, and close Velcro® panels.

After determining size of leak, patch or replace bladder.

SETTING UP CAMP  A Few Tips CHOOSING A CAMPSITE Choose a campsite carefully. Avoid areas with uneven ground, under trees, or near tall objects which may attract lightning. Stay clear of open flames and smoldering campfires. Be mindful of wildlife and areas with fragile vegetation. [ HINT: Face your tent into the wind to increase ventilation, decrease condensation, and keep pesky bugs at bay. ]

Look for high flat ground.

Fire and tents do not mix.

Be mindful of your surroundings so that others may enjoy.

STAKING OUT YOUR TENT Anchor your tent properly at all times to reduce the risk of loss or injury to the tent or occupants. Staking out your tent with proper tension can increase the usable space of your tent, enhance airflow by exposing vents, and help shed wind and water. [ HINT: Rock, sand, or snow filled sacks buried a few inches in the ground provide a great anchor if using stakes and trees is not possible. ]

Angle your stake in the ground away from the tent at about 30° from vertical.

2

3

1 START

Stake one corner then move to the opposite side, repeat.

GUYING OUT YOUR TENT In extreme weather, attach the supplied guy lines to the reflective guy-out loops on the rain fly and stake in place. Guy lines can increase the strength of your tent when there are high wind and snow loads.

A properly guyed out tent is much stronger against high winds.

USING YOUR EXOFLY™ NEMO AST® tents feature a unique morphing vestibule. These tents are designed to store gear inside where it can stay dry and close at hand, but if you need a temporary vestibule, simply unclip and retract the inner tent from the fly. Use this space to store muddy boots or prepare food while protected from the rain. [ HINT: On sunny blue sky days, stake the ring on the blue webbing. On foul weather grey days, stake the ring on the grey webbing. ]

69 • 70 | SETTING UP CAMP

An adjustable knot simplifies attachment to fixed objects.

Wrinkles in the floor indicate unequal tension.

USING YOUR JAKE’S FOOT The DAC Jake’s Foot corner anchor system makes tent setup faster and easier. The Jake’s Foot locks poles in place, enables easy fly attachment, and secures the tent footprint underneath the main tent body.

The main poles attach to the anchors by ball and socket, locking in place.

The fly and footprint quickly clip to bars on Jake’s Foot corner anchor.

Tension your tent so that water cannot pool and fabrics can breathe.

Use windows, doors, and vents to promote good airflow.

The pole end, fly clip, and footprint clip can be quickly removed with a simple twist.

AVOIDING CONDENSATION Condensation occurs when the air reaches a limit to the amount of water vapor it can hold. The colder the air, the less moisture it can hold. In tents, water vapor often will condense on interior surfaces such as tent walls, ceilings, and poles. The worst cases of condensation occur in environments where there are cool temperatures, high humidity, and very little wind. Though environmental conditions exist where condensation is unavoidable, there are certain steps you can take to reduce condensation when camping.

If all else fails, control condensation by wiping interior walls.

CATALOG GLOSSARY Condensation The change of water vapor to liquid when 1) air meets a cooler surface and is cooled below the dew point, or 2) air is already at 100% relative humidity while moisture continues to form.

Guy-out An additional anchor point on the tent shell used to increase the strength of the tent in inclement weather (high winds, snow loads, etc). This is usually created by anchoring a fixed line to a ‘guy-point’ sewn on the tent.

Packed Weight The weight of a tent with all the components included with the tent itself (stuff sack, stakes, gear lofts, guy-out cords, repair kit, vestibules, packaging, etc). See page 73 for more information.

Denier A unit of weight corresponding to the size of a fiber or yarn. It is defined as the mass in grams per 9,000 meters of a fiber. Lower deniers (i.e. 20D, 30D) typically refer to finer yarns and lighter weights, although this is not always the case.

Minimum Weight The absolute lightest a tent can weigh to still be a liveable and weatherproof shelter. For a double wall tent, this usually refers to the inner tent, fly, and poles. For a single wall tent, this includes the tent shell and poles/airbeams (and pump, if applicable).

W/B (Waterproof/Breathable) Fabric that is impermeable to water on the outside, but also allows water vapor to escape from inside to prevent condensation buildup. Many different types of W/B fabrics exist with different performance levels.

FR (fire-retardant) A treatment added to fabrics to prevent or resist the spread of fire. This treatment is required in CA, LA, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY, and Canada. All NEMO tents meet the FR requirement for tents (CPAI-84), unless explicitly stated otherwise.

OSMO™ NEMO’s proprietary waterproof/ breathable fabric that uses a polyurethane (PU) membrane layer coated onto a ripstop fabric to quickly transport moisture out of the tent.

PU Coated A polyurethane coating often used on tent fabrics for waterproofness. The ability of PU coating to resist water is measured in millimeters of hydrostatic head pressure.

UPCYCLED PRODUCTS

A NOTE ABOUT WEIGHTS Pre-2011, we defined packaged weight differently: as all the parts and pieces you would take if camping in a realistic and reasonable manner (stuff sack, vestibule, repair kit, stakes, guy lines) and not the packaging materials. Though this definition is much more realistic, it didn’t conform to industry norms and caused confusion with customers. As of 2011 product, NEMO defines minimum and packaged weight as follows: Packaged Weight is the total weight of all the included pieces/parts/ components shipped with a tent from the factory including stuff sack, tent body, fly, extra vestibule, poles, gear lofts, gear caddies, pole sleeve, repair kit, instructions, tags, stickers, plastic bag that protects it from dust, rubber bands wrapped around poles, etc. Minimum Weight is the total weight of the tent body, poles (if applicable), and fly (if applicable). In the case of airbeam supported tents, we count the airbeam and pump in the minimum weight since there are no poles. Stakes, stuff sack, guy lines, extra vestibules, etc. are not included. Basically, these are the bare essentials that you would need to make a weatherproof/ waterproof shelter.
