Planning for a Future By Al Dunning

The Coronavirus has shaken the fiber of America. My hope is that this life threatening illness will pass and normal life will return fairly soon. Until then I hope everyone takes this seriously and are following the recommended precautions to stay safe and healthy.

Life will throw a curve at us every now and then. We sometime take for granted when our lives are just going along, full of busyness. I sometimes feel like I am on a treadmill. I rush from one project to another, one show to the next, and ride each horse thinking that they may be my next winner. I wake up every morning and have a plan. Most of the time I am fortunate to complete most of the list. Even with my experience and many wise advisors, I still fall short of taking time to make time for some important aspects of caring for my family and future. Status quo tricks us into a false sense of security. In 2008, we had an economy crisis that sent the USA into turbulent financial times. It effected a huge portion of the population. Businesses, personal finances, and the jobs were sent into a spiral. I want to share with you some advice I received in October of 2008, from my CPA firm. It absolutely relates to our present day pandemic predicament. Here is some of their wisdom. 1-Don’t panic! Review your spending and make intelligent decisions. Figure your anticipated cash needs. Budget after your evaluation for short and long term needs. 2-Take a fresh look at your monthly income and expenses. How much drop in revenue can your business withstand and for how long? What is your cash flow and payroll needs? Do you have sufficient reserves to weather the storm? 3-Check the status of your credit lines. Work to lessen the interest wherever possible. 4-Pay all bills. Do not to rely on credit. 5-Complete a financial statement. Do a complete inventory of your assets. 6-Keep a close eye on accounts receivables. Follow up on all slow payers or changes in payment patterns. 7-Analyze your expenses and reduce or control where you can. Communicate with staff about tightening spending. Prebill where applicable. 8-Contact your customers. Keeping them in the loop about what you’re doing can keep them involved. 9-Review all your insurance coverage. 10-Calm your employees by communicating with them. Sharing how the crisis affects the company will curtail speculation. This is a time to reevaluate your financial security and business strategies. Make this an opportunity to look at your life and business with clear eyes. Make changes! Improve your many things that you have overlooked, put aside, or deferred for lack of time. Don’t hesitate to seek qualified advisors. Years ago my father-in-law told me for my business to succeed, I needed to be good at what I do, be honest, work hard, and have a trusted doctor, accountant, dentist, lawyer, and more. He said that I didn’t need to be an expert on all things but I need to know where to find quality advice and answers. I listened!

Stay healthy, happy, and safe! Love your family, friends, and embrace your faith! Contact Al at al@aldunning.com or check out his website, aldunning.com. 16

By Madison Staten Cronkite News Thousands of wild horses and burros roam across millions of acres of public land in 10 Western states, including Arizona. The Bureau of Land Management, which manages these herds, estimated last year there are 88,000 animals – more than three times as many as there should be. The bureau says the number of wild horses and burros exceeds the “appropriate management level” and leads to depleted grass and water resources, “threatening the overall health of the public rangelands and degrading ecosystems,” according to the BLM’s website.

This means deteriorated health among wild horses and burros, which can lead to starvation, dehydration and death. The agency rounds up some of the animals yearly and works to find them new homes through adoptions. The BLM estimates a manageable population would be 27,000 wild horses and burros. John Hall, the Arizona wild horse and burro program lead for the bureau, facilitated an adoption this month in Marana, north of Tucson. He said the agency began its Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) last year, giving adopters up to

$1,000 for an untrained wild horse or burro. “I’ll typically adopt or sell close to 75 percent of them,” Hall said. “Now before AIP, we were seeing somewhere around 50 percent. It’s definitely bumped up our adoptions quite a bit.” Hall gathers horses and burros for rotating adoption events like the one in Marana. At any given time, continued on page 22

Hall has 450 to 1,000 animals in his care. “We try to hit new spots every year so that people understand that we do have this program,” Hall said. “It really brings more attention to us, helps us actually get these animals in good homes.” Rancher Steve Temple came to the Marana adoption in search of a burro to be a friend to a retired rope horse. “It was excellent,” Temple said of the adoption process. “You know, we came through, we looked around, we looked at all the animals, and we found the staff helped us provide which ones were real docile.” Temple’s excitement over Arizona burros is somewhat unusual. Hall said the general public often overlooks burros in favor of wild horses. “People call this the horse program – it’s not just horses,” Hall said. “We have a lot of burros in Arizona. We

have a lot of burros in California. They create the same nuisance issues that we see with horses. They also do the same damage to the range that horses can do.” In 2019, the BLM reported more than 6,900 burros and about 530 wild horses in Arizona. “The BLM has been criticized from both angles, from the cattle growers to the horse advocates,” said Julie Murphree, who’s doing her doctoral research on wild horses at Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability. “One of the concerns I have with adopting the horses out is if the public is ready for this. It’s difficult to follow up, to see how they are doing once they are adopted.” She’s not the only one who’s concerned. William Perry Pendley, the acting director for the BLM, has called the wild horse and burro issue one of the biggest challenges facing the agency. “We have 88,000 wild horses and burros on our Western federal lands,” Pendley said. “We’ve increased our adoption program to get people to adopt these wild animals – that’s not going to solve this problem. It’s a tens of millions of dollars problem. But the bigger problem, for me, is

The Bureau of Land Management estimates there are 6,900 burros and 530 wild horses in Arizona. The BLM is rounding some of them up and making them available to the public for adoption. (Photo by Michael Hannan/Cronkite News) the existential threat to the quality of these lands.” In Arizona, some of the horses that are adopted already have been trained through a program with the Arizona Department of Corrections. The goal is to help reduce the population so overgrazing doesn’t happen. Brandon Grede is one of the Arizona inmates who works at Hall’s facility to train horses for adoption. “They come in wild and don’t want anything to do with you and will pretty much do anything to get away from you,” Grede said. But when

the animals are ready to be adopted, “I mean, you can pretty much walk around without a lead rope and they’ll just follow you like a lost puppy.” Grede acknowledges it’s a bittersweet training process. “You’re sad to see them go, but you’re happy because you know that they’re being spoiled and someone’s going to love them as much as you did,” he said. Some of those trained horses and burros will be up for adoption at the end of April in Williams, where financial incentives will be offered.

Hershberger Horse Sale Results

Hershberger Performance Horse Sale Company, Jason and Nikki Hershberger, held their 15th Annual Performance Horse Sale Friday, February 28th, at WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ. The sale kicked off the AZ Sun Country Circuit, the largest AQHA circuit in the West. Horses were previewed on Thursday at 2:00 in a jackpot team roping. The jackpot was won by Alex Carbajal, riding hip # 83 SB Two Eyed Moon and Bode Baize, riding hip # 82 Jake. It was a tough roping and fun to watch! Alex and Bode were awarded 30-30 rifles which were sponsored by Terry Larsen and Southwest Risk Management. Horses were previewed again on Friday at noon. Horses were demonstrated in the events of roping, reining, and cow horse. The sale began at 4:00. A professional staff included: Auctioneer, Joel White, announcer, Jayson Jackson, and bid spotters Stacy Lee, Jody Doescher, Justin Morris, and Spence Kidney. Wyatt Hershberger did a great job announcing the preview. The High-Selling Horse, Wimpys Shining Jac, a 2010 Palomino gelding, was consigned by Mozaun and Sara McKibben. This pretty rope horse/reiner/ranch rider is a very cool horse. He sold for $83,000.00 to Billy Brenton from Casper WY. Other top sellers were, MC Sugar Lad at $55,000.00, also consigned by Mozaun and Sara McKibben. Dakota Kirkenschlager was the agent for Ron Thompson on the great horse RY Buckskin Bandit who sold for $49,000.00, Jordan Allyn consignment

38

BQH Baron Eyed Skip commanded the price of $40,000.00. Other topten selling horses were consigned by: Brady and Shelby Black, Ryan VonAhn, Phil Tearney, Kelton Hill, Bode Baize, Chad and Paje Turner, and Jace Thomas. The top-ten horses averaged $41,000.00. Jason is always excited to see good horses from the sale go on to be successful with their new owners. We were excited to see the quality of horses that were brought by consignors from all over the US and Canada. The over-all average sale price on the horses sold was $17,044.00. Despite the high average there were some good buys of really nice horses for under $15,000.00. Thanks to the consignors who brought these quality horses. This year’s lucky buyer was Joe Verhun. Uncle Joe took home the Corriente trophy saddle (sponsored by Western Drilling and The Pump Co./Bill Wood) from the raffle drawing at the end of the sale. Uncle Joe has been attending and buying a horse from our sale since the very first year. A special thank you to Terry Larsen and Southwest Risk Management for the trophy rifles to the High-Volume Buyer, High Seller, and Highest Placing Rope Horse (from the sale) in the American Rope Horse Futurity, the following day. Good food, beautiful Arizona weather, elite equine facility, shopping, and great horses to watch and bid on made this year’s performance horse sale a success. Hershberger Performance Horses would like to thank all that attended. We are grateful to all of our buyers that trust in the quality brought to the Hershberger Performance Horse Sale.

Sun Circuit’s Diversity Draws Even Larger Numbers

It was apparent from any vantage point that the 2020 Arizona Sun Circuit was even bigger than last year: more trailers, more stalls, more horses in the arenas. The 9 day equine extravaganza was held February 29 through March 8th at the expansive WestWorld facilities in Scottsdale Arizona. The show’s reputation for providing a tremendous diversity of classes along with a superlative experience continues to draw exhibitors of every level from all over the country, and the world. Sun Circuit concluded just before a cascade of horse show cancellations due to the coronavirus sweeping the nation.

Increases in class entries were seen across the board. There were 22,609 AQHA entires and 4,647 NSBA class entries, including NSBA Color Breed classes. NRHA and NRCHA classes also saw increases. Sun Circuit utilized every inch of the WestWorld show grounds. Ten arenas held classes and additional arenas were available for warm up. It seems fitting that the iconic western imagery of Arizona served as a backdrop for the burgeoning numbers of exhibitors in Ranch related classes. No silver draped saddles, no bling, no fancy clothes were to be found in the ranch pens, but there were plenty of versatile, athletic and phenomenal horses. The increases in Ranch entries required show management to distribute some classes to an additional arena. Ranch Riding classes saw 30, 40 and more entries across the divisions, including a staggering 57 horses in the Senior and 47 Select. Dozens of amateur and open Ranch Trail horses of all levels navigated naturalistic obstacles. There has been a noticeable surge of Select exhibitors in Ranch Trail with 23 dragging logs, opening gates and crossing bridges. Though Arizona Quarter Horse Association’s Ranch on the Rail classes are non AQHA, that did not dissuade exhibitors. This fan-favorite class saw 33 amateur entries and a sizable number of open and L1 riders as well. Ranch exhibitors had their own prize line up with High Point awards, Best of Show and Circuit Awards. Carly Lueck and Smooth Cat Man won 42

the Amateur Ranch High Point award of a Superior Saddlery Saddle. The Open Ranch High Point title and Superior Saddle went to Anne Macrea and Pretty Smart Guy while the L1 Open Ranch High Point was picked up by Oraz Holdings’ Lil BevAt Bar. The show also offered a full slate of VRH classes which drew more exhibitors than previous years. An all-breed VRH Open High Point Superior saddle was the award many exhibitors were aiming for. When the points were tallied, it was Kalahari Moonshine and Kathy Torres who came out on top. Cow Horse exhibitors came out in droves in AQHA, Versatility and NRCHA classes. Some of the best in the nation were showcased in the 10th Annual Smart Boons Fence Challenge with $20,000 in added money. Corey Cushing was the last to go on One Fine Vintage, owned by Bradley and Mary Roberts. It had been a night of spectacular runs and Corey knew he had to pull out all the stops for the win. The pair dominated their cow with ease and marked a 149 to win $6,375, the buckle and an embroidered cooler. The total payout was $26,000 along with other great prizes. The Farnam Golden Cowboy Champion was announced at the conclusion of the Smart Boons Challenge. The Golden Cowboy is an event in which one horse and rider have their scores combined from the Smart Boons, Herd Work, Muley Steer Stoping, and Wednesday’s Jr or Sr Cowhorse. Farnam donated $5,000 to the purse for the event along with a fabulous prize line that included a custom saddle from Superior Saddlery, a Preston Williams Hardware buckle, a cowhide chair, embroidered coolers, bronc halters and more. Corey Cushing and One Fine Vintage had a composite score of 370.5 to secure the title of 2020 Golden Cowboy. The $25,000 added ARHFA Sun Circuit Rope Horse Futurity event had an increase in entries as well. A limited rider division, with an additional $5,000 added to the pot, was also offered in the Futurity. This was the first year that the Maturity was added to its class list, and a NonPro event was held as well. The total payout was over $108,000 this year. Shesa Royal Cat with Casey Hicks won the Futurity heading and a check for $7,828. JD Yates rode Marlboro Cat for the heeling win and $8,750. JD was back in the Maturity heading on BB Cooper. The pair took the top spot and $2,520. Hermanito Cat got Andy Holcomb to the right

place on each run so the pair could win the Maturity heeling and $3,160. Rail and pattern class exhibitors found a lot to love at Sun Circuit. Level 1 classes gave newer folks the opportunity to participate in a top tier show, while Level 3 saw the many titans of the Quarter Horse world at their finest. Given its own covered arena for the duration of the show, Trail kept busy with AQHA and NSBA riders. Western Pleasure, Western Riding and Horsemanship all had a great deal of participation in NSBA concurrent classes. The NSBA held its Riders Cup at Sun Circuit again this year. The event awarded hefty checks and elegant silver trophy cups. A total payout of $80,000 was distributed. On Tuesday evening, the highly entertaining and rather whacky Cowboy Ninja Warrior games were held. Seven 4-person teams were auctioned off to raise $13,560 for the NSBA Crisis Fund. The National Championships in Horsemanship, Equitation and Showmanship were decided at Sun Circuit after 3 goes of tournament style competition reduced the field of nationally ranked amateur, select and youth exhibitor down to just four in each division. The Four showed in head-to-head matchups that were both fun and exciting. All of the finalists received embroidered leather bomber jackets, and each champion won a gorgeous silver buckle. Farnam Horsemanship National Championship saw Kent Ray Taylor and Dont Think Twice prevailing in his head to head match ups to become the Select champion. Giorgia Medows and Wimpys Show Stopper were the Youth champions and Natalia Devencenty riding Moonlite Madnez was the Amateur champion. Adequan Showmanship National Championship saw Scott Reinartz and Investing a Good Bar progress through each round of the Select with one exceptional pattern after another and ultimately win the championship. Tony Anderman and Solo Invested arrived at Sun Circuit in the top position on the Amateur Showmanship Rankings list and made it all the way to the champion buckle. Grace Himes and Essentially Good ranked 3rd in the nation among youth and showed with exquisite form in each round right up to the finals to win the championship. The Equine Chronicle was the title sponsor of the Equitation National

Championship. Grace Himes and Essentially Good were back as one of The Four, and prevailed to collect her second Championship. Carey Nowacek and Lethals Hot Weapon’s final two patterns earned whistles and shouts for its grace and precision and won her the Amateur Champion buckle. In the Select, Karen Lee Tegner-Manseth and Definately A First were crowned champions. Fantastic awards are another reason people love Sun Circuit. Rod Patrick Boots were the Best of Show prizes that awaited youth, amateur and select exhibitors in both the all-around and ranch and cattle divisions. There were 33 saddle awards across disciplines, ages and levels. Non Pros in L1, L2 and L3 accumulated points to win Bobs Custom Saddles. They had their points tallied from showmanship, horsemanship pleasure and halter. Megan Neugebauer riding DW Krymsun Advantage took top honors in the Level 1. Good N Plenty Gold was shown in Level 2 by Griffin Holliday to claim the saddle award. Youth rider Isabella Burkley won the Level 3 saddle with Roses Only. The Non-Pro English saddle was won by Laurel Champlin and Look N Hott. Amateur roper Paul Bogart Riding Jacks Ichi Cat caught himself the High Point Roping Caliente Saddle. Garrett Hershberger showed mastery at heading and heeling to win the High Point Youth Roping award of a Caliente Saddle Shop saddle. A full list of award winners can be found at SunCircuit.com Sun Circuit strives to make the show fun and rewarding for everyone. The Prize Patrol was busy roaming the grounds with fun give-aways. After 9 days of boot races, bouncy horse races, trot races, trivia, name that tune challenges and other games, over $60,000 worth of electronics, products and gift certificates were distributed thanks to generous sponsors. Exhibitor parties hosted by The Johns Family, AQHA stallions Mechanic and The Mile High Club and by D Designs Show Clothing and Hot Ones Only provided great food, entertainment and social time for everyone. A welcoming environment, fantastic awards, great give aways and the opportunity to enjoy Scottsdale’s coveted sunshine, Arizona Sun Circuit was bursting at the seams with all the makings of a memorable horse show. Those memories will certainly be cherished as we all weather the challenges of taking care of our families and our horses in the coming months.

In a clinical trial, Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at Texas A&M University and the University of Georgia (UGA) found gallium maltolate (GaM), a semimetal compound with antimicrobial and antiinflammatory properties, might be a viable alternative to overprescribed antibiotics in treating foal pneumonia. The infection, which is among the leading causes of death in foals, does not have an effective vaccine, Morris Animal Foundation says. Pneumonia in these animals is often caused by Rhodococcus equi (R. equi), a bacterium that occurs naturally in soil; however, current methods to screen for this pathogen are imprecise. As such, many foals are treated with antibiotics, such as the combination of a macrolide antimicrobial with rifampin (MaR), even though they have not developed pneumonia. This unnecessary administration of the treatment contributes to drug resistance, says Noah Cohen, VMD, MPH, PhD, DACVIM, the Patsy Link Chair in Equine Research at Texas A&M, a primary investigator on the study along with colleague, Steeve Giguère, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM (deceased). “While that treatment strategy saves lives in the short term, it’s really driving this resistance problem because for every one foal that needs treatment, you treat several foals that don’t need treatment,” Dr. Cohen explains. “For the sake of foals, we want to offer veterinarians a better, nontraditional option.” More at / www.veterinarypracticenews.com

Can detomidine cause post-procedure colic?

With detomidine, some side effects can be anticipated, but horses are unlikely to be at risk for more serious complications By David W. Ramey, DVM

50

APRIL 2020

Available to veterinarians as detomidine hydrochloride, detomidine is a selective α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist used in horses as a sedative to assist in performance of a variety of clinical procedures. In addition, it is used as an analgesic in the treatment of abdominal pain (colic). Detomidine activates α-2 catecholamine receptors, which reduces the production of excitatory neurotransmitters through a negative feedback response. The main therapeutic effects occur due to stimulation of α-2 receptors in the brain stem, resulting in a reduced sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system (CNS). Because of its effects on the sympathetic nervous system, detomidine can cause decreased heart rate, stroke volume, and blood pressure. Detomidine also acts as an antidiuretic. The many uses of detomidine Administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or orally, detomidine is a potent sedative, causing horses to quickly lower their heads and become less sensitive to stimuli. Effects can vary, depending on the dose and the individual animal. However, horses sedated with detomidine can still react quickly to stimuli, requiring a cautious approach when working around them. Detomidine is also a potent analgesic—its effects have been demonstrated in a number of pain models. Of particular clinical importance is its use as an inhibitor of visceral pain. In this regard, detomidine is so effective at inhibiting visceral pain that care in administration to horses with colic is warranted, so as not to mask signs indicating a horse is a candidate for abdominal surgery. When detomidine is used to treat colic pain, the duration of effect can last as long as three hours. For the treatment of abdominal pain, studies have shown detomidine is more potent and longer-acting than the other α-2 agonist, xylazine.

"We as a younger generation got to step in and realize the fruits of guys like my dad, Walt Alsbaugh, Harry Vold, Cotton Rosser and Mike Cervi and Neal Gay and guys I've missed who came before us deserve a lot of credit. My dad started from nothing and he established a lot of stuff and he did it on his own and I'm proud of him for that fact. I'm also proud of him raising a great family in the midst of all of it." Jerry, his younger brother Scott and younger sister, Janet all worked in the rodeo business with their dad. In 1886, Honeycutt’s greatgrandparents homesteaded to Alamosa from New York. Virginia was the daughter of Walt and Alice Alsbaugh. Walt Alsbaugh was a legendary PRCA stock contractor who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1990. Virginia’s brother, Art Alsbaugh, and his wife, Linda, were the recipients of the 2012 Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award. “I was involved with my fatherin-law, and I appreciated that so much,” Roy said. Jerry said Roy's start in rodeo came from Walt Alsbaugh. "He had a truck and trailer, but he didn't own any bulls or horses, didn't own one saddle, not one flank, nothing," Jerry said. "He got along with people and he leased everything from my grandpa (Walt Alsbaugh). At that time, my grandpa was running 700 to 800 head of horses and 200 head of bulls. My dad would pay my grandpa a lease and then my dad would go put on his own rodeos." Virginia and Roy met in 1963 and were married 55 years. continued on page 56

BLM TO TEMPORARILY SUSPEND ENTRANCE FEES ON PUBLIC LANDS ACROSS AMERICA

WASHINGTON – After careful consideration and at the direction of Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, the Bureau of Land Management will temporarily suspend the collection of all entrance fees until further notice. As a result, site-specific dayuse fees at BLM recreation sites and areas will be waived for the

54

foreseeable future. Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals, group day use, and use of special areas, will remain in effect. “I’ve directed the Bureau of Land Management to waive entrance fees at recreation sites and national monuments that remain open. This small step makes it

a little easier for the American public to enjoy the outdoors across the 245 million acres of public lands managed by the agency,” said Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt. In an effort to support social distancing, the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and

APRIL 2020

Wildlife Service and other states and municipalities recently made similar announcements to temporarily suspend entrance fees at parks, refuges and other public recreation sites. “Our vast public lands overseen by the Department offer special outdoor experiences to recreate, embrace nature and implement some social distancing.” Secretary Bernhardt continued. At a majority of BLM-managed locations where it is currently possible to adhere to public health guidance, outdoor spaces remain open to the public, while many facilities will be closed. The Department of the Interior and BLM continue to urge visitors to do their part when visiting your public lands to follow CDC guidance by maintaining a safe distance between yourself and other groups; washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze; and most importantly, staying home if you feel sick. Specifically, the CDC recommends high-risk populations, such as the elderly and people with underlying conditions, take extra precautions to be best protected against the spread of coronavirus. Updates about the BLM response to the coronavirus will be posted on www.blm.gov. Please check with individual field and district offices and visitor centers for specific details about operations in your area. BLM-managed public lands offer a wide array of recreational opportunities, including hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, boating, whitewater rafting, offhighway vehicle driving, rock climbing, and more. Americans make approximately 67 million visits annually to BLM-managed lands, supporting approximately 48,000 jobs nationwide and contributing almost $7 billion to the U.S. economy.

Full Scope Naturopathic Medical Practice Prolotherapy Platelet Rich Plasma Dr Mike Cronin Stem Cell Therapy NMD IV Nutrient therapy

Prolotherapy is effective in treat-

ing chronic joint pain by stabilizing the joint capsule, rebuilding collagen and strengthening ligaments, and relieving pain. Injured tissues are infused with a nutrient solution of 12-20% glucose, vitamin B12, and lidocaine. Glucosamine may be added to increase stimulation. Generally, 3-6 treatments provide resolution.

PAIN RELIEF and

JOINT REPAIR

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

treatment concentrates platelets from your blood which are then injected into ligaments and joints. PRP heals moderate to severe joint degeneration, cartilage tears, and arthritis damage. PRP provides stronger healing stimulation than prolotherapy. When pain is combined with joint inflammation, we often start with 1-2 prolotherapy treatments, followed by 2-3 PRP treatments.

Stem cell therapy can heal

severely injured joint tissues, including osteoarthritis. Stem cells and associated growth factors stimulate healing and regenerate new tissue in ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, replacing what’s been damaged.

FDA Approves Use of Chromium Propionate in Horse Diets market today and has been fed to millions of animals around globe. KemTRACE Chromium is a highly bioavailable, organic source of chromium propionate that helps stabilize insulin receptors in animals, improving glucose use and reducing the negative impacts of stress. Every cell in the horse relies on glucose to fuel its

for Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – North America. “Chromium supplementation is one way that Kemin has advanced nutrition and performance in livestock and poultry in recent decades, and we are proud to now offer the same quality, safe, efficacious product to horse owners, nutritionists and veterinarians.” With more than 20 years of research and 50 peer-reviewed chromium research studies, Kemin established chromium propionate as safe and efficacious. Published research across many species has shown chromium may have the ability to reduce cortisol, which is a hormone secreted in response to stress. The reduction in cortisol during times of stress may decrease negative impacts from stress events – such as extreme heat or cold, diet changes, changes in routine and more. KemTRACE Chromium is manufactured at Kemin in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. This facility has the Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) 22000, which is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) as a rigorous food safety management system, certified by approved third-party organizations. The certification covers the manufacturing of food ingredients used for further processing and is designed to deliver greater confidence in food, reduce health risks, lower audit costs, improve brand protection and improve supply chain management. KemTRACE Chromium is also available for use in horse diets in Mexico. Additionally, KemTRACE Chromium is available for use in more than 35 countries around the world for a variety of species.

What are coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that can cause a range of symptoms, including a runny nose, cough, sore throat and fever. Some are mild, such as the common cold, while others are more likely to lead to pneumonia. They’re usually spread through direct contact with an infected person. The coronavirus gets its name from the crown-like spikes on its surface (“corona” in Latin translates to “crown”). The genus coronavirus is composed of at least three groups that cause mild to severe enteric, respiratory, or systemic disease. Other well-known coronaviruses are SARS and MERS.

Are there coronaviruses in animals?

Coronaviruses are common in several species of domestic and wild animals, including cattle, horses, dogs, cats, ferrets, camels, bats, and others. Did this coronavirus spread from animals to humans? Although not common, coronaviruses can be transmitted from animals to humans. Bats can be reservoir hosts for viruses which can cross species barriers to infect humans and other domestic and wild mammals. In the last two major coronavirus outbreaks that were transmitted to humans, transmission occurred through intermediate hosts: the masked palm civet (SARS) and dromedary camels (MERS). Health officials are working to identify the animal source of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCOV), now known officially as COVID-19 or Corona Virus Disease. Investigations are ongoing. The first infections were linked to a live animal market in China, but the virus is now spreading from person to person.

Can my pet contract the COVID-19 coronavirus?

According to organizations such as the AVMA and the World Organisation for Animal Health, at this point, we do not have sustained evidence that animals such as dogs and cats become ill from this virus. It’s important to remember that viruses can sometimes infect a species but not cause illness in that species, nor become transmissible to others. In late February 2020, Hong Kong authorities quarantined a dog after samples from the dog’s nasal cavity and mouth tested “weak positive” for the virus. The dog’s owner had tested positive for COVID-19. Authorities believe it is a case of human to animal transmission but stress that it is not cause for alarm. The dog did not show signs of illness. After a period of time, the dog tested negative and was released from quarantine. It later died from what experts believe were other health issues, possibly related to its older age (17). We are following news of a second dog testing positive for COVID-19 in Hong Kong. The owner tested positive for COVID-19. We will provide updates on this case, if needed. Echoing other world health authorities, Hong Kong officials state that there is currently no evidence that pet animals can be a source of COVID-19 for humans or that the virus can cause the disease in dogs.

VERSATILE STANDOUT HORSE DINERO PASSES AWAY BY TRACY RENCK

Dinero, a versatile, reliable horse, passed away March 23. He was 25.

The horse was ridden by Cory Petska, the 2017 team roping heeling world champion, and his wife, Sherry Cervi, a three-time world champion barrel racer. “(Dinero) just started having some issues and we didn’t want him to suffer,” Cervi said. “Cory probably rode Dinero for three years. He

won Salinas (Calif.), Nampa (Idaho) and numerous jackpots on him, and he helped him get to the Finals. He never rode him at the Finals. I rode at the Finals in barrel racing in 2005. (Dinero) had a great personality. He was a real personable horse, was really gritty and tried really hard, it didn’t

matter what event he did.” In 2006 in Nampa, Petska, Walt Woodard and Richard Durham rode Dinero in the team roping short round before unsaddling him in order to re-saddle him for Cervi to compete on him in the barrel racing. “He was a horse that it didn’t matter what you did, he tried,” Cervi said. “Everything was just another job to him. He was a super-talented horse. The horse I won my last two world championships on (in 2010 and 2013), Stingray, is by him. And Sister, Hailey Kinsel’s horse that she has won the last two gold buckles on, is by him.” Petska, a 15-time Wrangler NFR qualifier (2003-11, 2013-18), rode Lori, a daughter of Dinero's, at two NFRs. Steer wrestler Todd Suhn, a 16-time NFR qualifier, rode Maximus, a son of Dinero's, for several years. Barrel racer Tammy Fischer also rode a daughter and son of Dinero's at the NFR. Dinero was 14.2 hands and weighed 1,250 pounds. Mel Potter, Cervi’s father, bought Dinero at age 2. He was buried at the family ranch in Marana, Ariz. “(Dinero) was definitely part of the family,” Cervi said. “He will not ever be replaced, but there are some good sons of his standing and hopefully they go on. Obviously, his daughters I think will go on and be producers. His legacy will live on.” 62

BUCK THE VIRUS TO HELP RIDERS IN NEED

BY: ANDREW GIANGOLA

Bobby DelVecchio was one of the most unlikely cowboys to make it as a star in the PBR. Bobby D., a.k.a. “Yankee” and “Bronx” to fellow riders, left his fifth-floor walk-up on 182nd Street and the mean streets of New York to barnstorm the country as a rodeo star before becoming a founding member of Professional Bull Riders. The colorful, swaggering boy from the Bronx would wow crowds with his flashy chaps and colorful victory dance while finding favor with the media in turning a phrase as adeptly as he hung onto the rankest bulls. Bobby D. once summed up his profession this way: “In bull riding, it’s money… or mud.” Indeed, PBR cowboys make the 8 and some money… or get a mouthful of dirt and no paycheck. During the live sporting event shut-down that was brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic, which is hitting DelVecchio’s hometown especially hard, PBR riders are finding alternate ways to make a living to put food on the table for their families. To assist its riders in this time, PBR has now unveiled a #BuckTheVirus T-shirt, which is now available on the league’s online shop. All proceeds after manufacturing costs will go directly to “Protect the Ride” – a new fund set up within the Western Sports Foundation (WSF) to help cowboys and their families who may be in need. (PBR is the primary financial supporter of WSF.) #BuckTheVirus is an offshoot of the campaign, #BeatTheVirus, which calls attention to behaviors we all must adopt to collectively defeat COVID-19. This website https://beatthevirus.org/ shares the most up to date information and social guidance available. #BeatTheVirus, now with PBR’s support through #BuckTheVirus, is a social media campaign aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. Core to the campaign are short, fun selfie videos based on messages grounded in science for simple personal actions everyone can all take to slow the spread. PBR fans are encouraged to join in and record a performance (spoken, sung, rapped, or rhymed) that commits all of us to doing our part to help beat the virus by preventing the spread of COVID-19. Fans can post their videos on social media (Instagram, Twitter, Snap, TikTok, Facebook) with the hashtags #BuckTheVirus and #BeatTheVirus, and call on their followers and friends to record their own video with the hashtags. Bobby D., the PBR and WSF encourage fans to have fun in helping spread this important message, to practice what you preach, and most of all to be safe. 64

In Loving Memory of Kenny Rogers “I’m sure you’ve all heard the sad news of the passing of country icon Kenny Rogers. Kenny played a pioneering role in bringing country into the pop mainstream, and his music and his fans transcended genre – from country to rock, pop to R&B. We at Warner Music were blessed to be part of Kenny’s musical life at several points in his phenomenal career -- going all the way back to 1967, when Kenny Rogers and the First Edition signed to Reprise and released their first hit single, “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),” followed by a string of albums. As a solo artist, Kenny released a trio of albums on Reprise in the late-‘80s/early-‘90s, and then we had the good fortune to bring him into the Warner Nashville family in 2013. We were the final label he signed with, and home to his two final studio albums before he retired in 2018. In that short time, I came to know Kenny as one of warmest, funniest, and most genuine people on the planet. When he walked our halls, it was a joy to watch the smiles of all who experienced his charm and his humanity. That we had the chance to work with that wonderful music man was a thrill and a memory of a lifetime! Above all, he was the consummate artist, whose golden, husky voice and amazing songs touched and moved people across the globe. He will be deeply missed.” - John Esposito, Chairman & CEO of Warner Music Nashville
