Randy Helm will be teaching ‘Confident and Safe Riding (for you and your horse’) Clinic Objective: In this clinic you will learn the importance of ground work, being the leader, knowledge is power, communicating effectively, the huge difference between "riding" and "sitting on a horse going places.” This clinic is limited to 5 participants!

Rick Badousek will teach ‘Gaining Respect and Control under Saddle’ Clinic Objective: Participants will learn how to gain their horses respect by controlling the horse’s feet and keeping the horse’s mind focused on the ride. 20
Cowboy Dressage of Arizona will offer ‘Cowboy Dressage and the Art of Horsemanship’ Clinic Objective: Learn about Cowboy Dressage and the Principle of Soft Feel- how can we communicate with our horses with the lightest of touch and create a partnership of understanding, harmony and oneness.
Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo welcomes Shari Rowe!
A concert Saturday night will feature Arizona’s own Shari Rowe. The concert will be from 7-11pm. Attendance to the concert is included in the Saturday ticket. Shari Rowe has earned a reputation for capturing simplistic beauty, crafting each lyric and melody with truth, sincerity and artistic integrity. This Southwestern troubadour has spent her career captivating audience’s countrywide, from front porch performances to concerts on the big stage, alongside artists like Wynonna Judd, Three Dog Night, Aaron Carter, and Diamond Rio. Combining classic country and bluegrass elements with a stellar lineup of Nashville players, Rowe is changing the pace of modern country music. On stage, Shari Rowe is nothing short of enchanting, but it’s her ability to translate that same intangible star-power into her recordings that sets her apart from all the rest. With a voice that sounds like home, Shari lives her life in the true spirit of country music, infusing her love of faith and family into everything she does, which ultimately led to her appointment as a Celebrity Ambassador for the Scott Foundation, as well as the Red Note Foundation. Most recently, Shari was selected to perform with industry legends industry legends Reba McEntire and Barry Manilow at the 25th Annual Celebrity Fight Night—wildly known as one of the nation’s most elite charity events. Arizona Horseman’s Challenge Judges The AZHC judges this year are bringing years of wisdom and training experience. Randy Helm has been training wild horses for over 20 years and is the supervisor of the wild horse inmate program at Florence State Prison in Florence, Arizona. Lee Anderson is a highly skilled horseman with well over half a century of horse training experience and research. Travis Lyons has spent countless hours training and learning from his mentors, developing his own method and strategies for breaking colts and working with problem horses. Rick Badousek is a Clinton Anderson Method Ambassador. He trains horses for the public, teaches lessons and holds clinics. Arizona Horseman’s Challenge This years the group of accomplished trainers that have been gathered for the Arizona Horseman’s Challenge is impressive. Jeff Cook out of Tucson, Arizona grew up in a ranching family and has been training horses his whole life. Eric Palmer out of Aguila, Arizona is a mule and horse trainer originally from Iowa. Brandy Stevenson discovered a love and passion for horses that led her to become a Chris Cox certified trainer. Regina Richter hails from Germany originally, and trains out of Tombstone, Arizona. Stillman Colt Robinson rounds out the group. He currently lives and trains horses in Texas and has been immersed in the horse industry his whole life. This year will provide some excitement and incredible learning opportunities as you witness the connection between these trainers and their BLM mustangs. The first session starts Friday evening at 6pm. For more information on these trainers, and our complete schedule visit azhcexpo.com

Bonnie & Clyde: Lovebirds On The Lam The deadly lovers were quite young when they went on their crime spree. Clyde was only 25 when he was killed and Bonnie, only 22. Although the two are known today for their dozen, or so, bank robberies, Bonnie and Clyde most often preyed upon small stores and rural gas stations. They are believed to have killed at least nine police officers and several civilians. Bonnie chain smoked Camel cigarettes but she never smoked cigars except in the gag photo, which branded her as a cigar-smoking machine-gun wielding killer.

Inside the Death Car The lawmen who ambushed Bonnie and Clyde found inside their bullet-riddled car, Clyde’s saxophone, three BARs (Browning Automatic Rifles), two sawed-off shotguns, a dozen hand guns, fifteen sets of license plates and a book, “The Saga of Billy the Kid,” by Walter Noble Burns.
Clyde was always a snappy dresser and he insisted that in posing for photographs, the Barrow Gang look sharp, in snazzy suits.
Frank Hamer Gets It Done When the Barrow Gang seemed uncatchable in 1934, Texas turned to its greatest Texas Ranger to track them down and bring them back, dead or alive. Frank Hamer was born in the Texas Hill Country in 1884. The son of a blacksmith, Frank grew up to be the deadliest Texas Ranger of the 20th Century. He survived 53 gunfights, was pronounced dead twice and was retired when he was called out of retirement in 1934 and along with other lawmen ambushed the outlaw lovers near Sailes, Louisiana on May 22, 1934.
Two special issues detail the real Bonnie and Clyde and the real trackdown against the new movie, “The Highwaymen,” currently running on Netflix. Order today! Store.TrueWestMagazine.com • Amazon.com APRIL 2019

Gracie and Ruby the dog were my personal chauffeurs around the ranch after surgery!
Congratulations Becky!!
Grady's handicap is now a 7!
My wonderful intern Mariah
Greetings from the Almosta Ranch!
It's been a while since we have done an article, so here you go!
The big news is on December 31st, 2018, I had my left hip replaced. My hip had been in pain for a long time, making walking and riding uncomfortable. Currently, I am in recovery and doing physical therapy. I look forward to getting back on the horse - pardon the pun - and riding with no pain! I owe thank you to many people for taking care of me, my horses, and clients while I have been on the IR (Injury Reserve). My son Grady returned to Arizona from New York in October and the whole family is thrilled to have him and his dog Ruby back in the fold! Grady has taken some time off and has been enjoying a lot of golfing and family time. Becky was surprised at the AZCHA Awards Banquet by receiving the Don Dodge Award! I won this award in 2011. It recognizes an outstanding contribution to the sport of cutting. It is wonderful that the Cutting Horse Association recognized Becky for her dedication in announcing their shows, sometimes into the wee hours of the night. Don Dodge was a great friend of Becky's and mine. He lived on the Almosta Ranch with us for many years and I learned a great deal from him. Then Becky and our good friend and neighbor Peggy Kimes were inducted into the Arizona Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame on February 2nd! These two ladies have selflessly given of their time in many ways for the love of horses. They started America's Horse Cares, an arm of the AQHA Foundation to benefit therapeutic riding programs. This is well deserved for the love, time and warm hearts they share! Scientists Just Solved the Mystery of Why Zebras have Stripes By Making Horses Wear Zebra Costumes Why do zebras have stripes? To hide from predators? To stay cool? To attract a mate? These are questions that have long baffled zoologists, but researchers at the University of Bristol and UC Davis, California, USA think they have the answer. The zebra's stripes confuse parasites. All 11 species of zebra are subtly different, but what unites these African equids is that they have a two-tone coat that, according to the latest research, helps avoid blood-sucking parasites such as horse flies. To set-up the experiment, researchers at the University of Bristol's School of Biological Sciences used video analysis on tabanid horse flies and captive zebras and domestic horses at a livery in North Somerset, UK. Researchers think zebra stripes are to help confuse flies and other parasites.Jamie Carter At a distance, the zebra's stripes made no difference, and the horse flies began circling the zebras and horses alike. However, when the horse flies got closer to the zebras, they failed to slow down, so couldn't land. "Horse flies just seem to fly over zebra stripes or bump into them, but this didn't happen with horses," said Professor Tim Caro, Honorary Research 40
APRIL 2019
Fellow from the University of Bristol's School of Biological Sciences. "Consequently, far fewer successful landings were experienced by zebras compared to horses." Dr Martin How, Royal Society University Research Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences, added: "This reduced ability to land on the zebra's coat may be due to stripes disrupting the visual system of the horse flies during their final moments of approach." "Stripes may dazzle flies in some way once they are close enough to see them with their low-resolution eyes." If zebra stripes are so good at getting rid of parasites, why not dress-up horses as zebras? In a second experiment, horses were dressed in different colored cloth coats: black, white and zebra-striped livery. The horses wearing coats with striped patterns experienced fewer horse fly landings compared to when they wore single-color coats. The research could make 'zebra coats' common for horses, which is more ethical than when a zoo in Egypt was accused of painting a donkey to look like a zebra. Either way, there's now more evidence to back-up the theory that zebras have stripes to battle parasites, and not to disguise themselves from predators.

NTR National Finals V
The National Team Roping Tour (NTR) hosted its fifth annual National Finals March 4-9, 2019, at Rancho Rio Arena in Wickenburg, Arizona, continuing its tradition as one of the highestpaying divisional ropings in the industry. The six-day “Duel in the Desert” consisted of 18 individual ropings over seven divisions. Ropers from across the nation competed for more than half a million in cash and prizes including trophy Cactus Saddlery saddles, custom Gist Silversmith buckles and a one-of-a-kind new Ford F350. The 2019 edition boasted #11.5, #10.5, #9.5 and #8.5 National Finale divisions along with #10.5 and #8.5 VIP Championships—for VIP members 21 and over—plus the #13.5, #12.5, #7, Legends Over 50 and All-Girl Championships and an Open to the World #8.5 Truck Roping. Winners in the four National Finales took home fullytooled trophy saddles and buckles in addition to large cash payouts. First through fifth place in the #7 Championships also took home trophy saddles. Top hand Whip Peterson, of Paradise, Arizona, was the one to watch at this year’s NTR National Finals. Peterson, 14, topped the National #9.5 Finale heading for his dad Ace. The father-son team picked up $17,000 in cash plus saddles and buckles for the win. Peterson switched ends the following day for another victory 44
in the National #8.5 Finale heeling for Zane Compton, Tombstone, Arizona, splitting $20,000 for their efforts. With an additional fasttime on two paycheck, Peterson’s total cash earnings in two days came to $18,500. Larry Goss, of Redmond, Oregon, and Johnny Phillips, of Casper, Wyoming, teamed up at the suggestion of a mutual friend to rope in the Legends Over 50 Championships. The duo roped
four steers in 40.16 seconds to pocket $10,600 and the trophy Gist buckles. Goss, who qualified for the NFR in 1966, 1973 and 1978 and won the BFI in 1978, is no newcomer to the winner's circle however, a bout with cancer has had him out since May 2018. "This was my first win since going through chemo and radiation," Goss explained. “It felt good to be back.”
APRIL 2019
Ivan Hernandez, of Rifle, Colorado, finished second and eleventh heeling in the #8.5 National Finals Truck Roping aboard a borrowed horse they call "Sheeza Hot Mess" to earn the title of High Point Champion Team Roper and drive home the new Ford F350. Kanden Coronado, Kanarraville, Utah, and Cort Crume, Grants Pass, Oregon, roped three steers in 23.21 seconds to top the average in the truck roping and split $5,000. The NTR National Finals is also home to The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio, which draws spectators and buyers from all over the U.S. and Canada. The fifth annual event saw record sales of more than $1.1 million. Lot #20, Lets Roo It, was the top seller at $85,000. A full-brother to the 2018 high-seller, Im Brad To The Bone, the sorrel gelding, “Tank”, is a 2013 model sired by Roo Star out of Probably Not A Shiner. A finished head horse, he was consigned to the sale by Melissa Miller, Belton, Texas, ridden by La Cygne, Kan., horseman Brad Lund and purchased by Laurie Mills, Mills Livestock Company, out of Casper, Wyoming. For additional sale results visit ranchorioaz.com. The NTR National Finals VI and sixth annual Horse Sale will take place in Wickenburg, Ariz., in March 2020. 1000 Wins for Trainer Kevin Eikleberry
Trainer Kevin Eikleberry celebrated his 1,000th win when Nevadan won the second race at Turf Paradise March 12th. Kevin wasn’t sure he would ever make it to 1,000 wins given he is based in a smaller circuit. One of his most memorable horses was Da Hoss who started at Turf
Paradise and later went on to win the Breeders Turf Mile twice. One of his favorite horses is Peppy Miller which recently retired. Kevin said, “She did everything I ever asked her to do. She would run in the dirt, she would run in the grass. Probably one of the hardest trying horses I ever had.” Kevin’s father and grandfather

Scott Stevens Wins Prestigious Woolf Award
Jockey Scott Stevens, whose lifetime thoroughbred wins number 4890 and counting, has been selected by a nationwide vote of his peers as the winner of the 2019 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Stevens outpolled fellow riders Joe Bravo, Kerwin Clark, John Davila, Jr. and Julien Leparoux for the honor. Stevens considers the award a highpoint of a career that began in 1976, “There’s so many deserving riders and I probably came from one of the smallest circuits that’s ever won it so you’re not as famous as some of the riders riding at the big tracks.” Stevens spends much of the year at Turf Paradise and lives in Phoenix. At Turf he is a fan favorite, with a record that includes nine times as the top jockey of the meet. He is also a good will ambassador of horseracing. “I have always tried to conduct myself in a good manner. Horseracing has been my life and I have tried to present myself and the sport the best I can. I guess it finally paid off,” said Stevens. At 58 he stays in shape and has no plans to retire, “I’m still having fun. This is what I do.”

WHY RISK IT
CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES HOW IT WORKS
A Service to Improve Your Footing
We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

USDA Assists Farmers, Ranchers, Affected by Flooding (Washington, D.C., March 25, 2019) - To help Iowan residents, farmers, and ranchers affected by the devastation caused by recent flooding, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to aid people in their recovery efforts. USDA staff in the regional, state, and county offices are responding and providing a
variety of program flexibilities and other assistance to residents, agricultural producers, and impacted communities at large. “Recent flooding in the Midwest and along the Missouri and Mississippi River Valleys has caused devastating impacts across the region, and USDA has personnel and resources devoted to helping farmers and communities
recover after this storm,” Secretary Perdue said. “I encourage area farmers and ranchers to contact their local USDA Service Center so we can work with them to identify the resources and tools needed to reestablish their operations. While farmers and ranchers in the area are resilient, the pain is real. We will do everything in our power at USDA to be as helpful as we possibly can.”

calls it a career after 28 years
By Levi Ismail One of the most accomplished cowboys in rodeo history calls it a career after one last ride in Houston. A recent Friday would be Fred Whitfield’s last night of competition, bringing an end to his storied career. Fred failed to qualify and move on to championship night in tiedown roping. world champion, you’d figure there’s nothing new about any of this for Fred. Well, you’d be wrong. “I don’t actually own a horse for the first time in probably 30 plus years,” said Whitfield. Whitfield hasn’t competed in a professional rodeo in nearly a year and since, he’s sold off his horses and his ranch. Whitfield took a job in sales with a gas and oil company. His focus from there on was to spend more time with his family. What Whitfield didn’t expect was an invitation to once again put on the spurs and handle the lasso. Whitfield began practicing as soon as he could, knowing in some cases his competition could very well be half his age. At 51, Whitfield entered the ring knowing one way or another, it would be his last time doing so. Under these lights on the rodeo stage Whitfield has done it all. A cowboy who overcame humble beginnings to go on to become one of the most accomplished riders and one of few African Americans to do it. “It means the world to me. I’ve brought in countless fans, whether they be African American, White, Asian. My legacy is going to live on for a long time and that’s what makes the most proud,” said Whitfield. For the man who now calls Magnolia home, it was one hell of a ride no one will soon forget.

It’s Gold for The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team at FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ USA
Wellington, Fla. – For the second day in a row, it was gold for a U.S. team as The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team secured the top spot on Thursday, March 14, in the FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ USA CDIO3* presented by Stillpoint Farm and held during the 2019 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) 10 in Wellington, Fla. Earning the win for The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team with a total score of 437.693 were team members Jennifer Baumert (Wellington, Fla.), Shelly Francis (Loxahatchee, Fla.), Ashley Holzer (Wellington, Fla.), and Charlotte Jorst (Reno, Nev.). They were led by Chef d’Equipe Debbie McDonald. The silver medal went to Canada on a score of 433.685, while Germany finished in the bronze position with 402.724 points. The top three scores from each team’s combinations from Wednesday’s competition (the FEI Prix St. Georges and FEI Grand Prix CDIO3*) were added to the top three scores from Thursday’s competition (the FEI Intermediaire I and FEI Grand Prix Special CDIO3*) to make up the team totals. Starting out the team results on Thursday was Holzer, who rode her own Valentine, a nine-year-old Hanoverian mare, to a score of 71.265% in the FEI Intermediaire I test. “It definitely is a different mindset for me,” McDonald noted. “I have had athletes I coached in the Olympic Games; I’ve been on a team in the Olympics. I’ve never been a Chef [d’Equipe] for a team to bring home a medal. I keep thinking way forward now. I’m thinking of Tokyo [2020], and we want this to keep being a progression and an uphill trend. “It was really good sport today because the Canadians were right there,” she continued. “It was down to the wire, to the last horse in the ring. If you’re just looking at the sport, that’s what we need more of. We need that element of suspense that we had today. I wish we had more Nations Cups for that reason. People can get involved and look at it in a different light. I’m incredibly honored to be the new [technical advisor] and hope we can keep moving in this trend.”

New DataSource Launched The World’s largest database for Arabian Horses
Aurora, CO – March 5, 2019 – The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) has launched an upgraded version of DataSource with more features and better usability. In DataSource, a user can search more than 677,000 purebred U.S. Arabians, 408,000 Arabians from foreign registries and 373,000 Half and Anglo-Arabians. Users can view AHA/AERC competition results, add and view photographs of listed horses, search owners and breeders and view and print pedigrees and progeny listings.
With this upgrade, DataSource is now hosted on a modern, secure and maintained Web server usingthelatestv ersionsofoperatingsystem,Webservers oftwareandsecurityprotocols. In early 2018, due to out of date DataSource hardware and software AHA halted all online credit card payments in order to protect users’ personal data
and immediately started a rewrite of DataSource’s program code to come into compliance with all major Web browsers (Explorer, Chrome, etc.) By migrating DataSource to the new Web environment, users will now have single sign on capability. Users can sign into their AHA and DataSource accounts at the same time and will no longer have to login to two separate portals. Anyone can sign up for a free AHA account, which is required to access DataSource, at www.arabianhorses. org/datasource. From there, they can subscribe, renew or merge to an existing DataSource account. An updated feature of DataSource is the new photo upload tool. Users can easily select photos from their computer or online files to submit for approval with a click of a button. Once approved by AHA, they are loaded into a photo archive for the horse. The new server also makes the DataSource site PCI (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant. Users can subscribe or renew a membership online and immediately pay with a credit card or through a PayPal account. This gives the user instant access to DataSource after completing their transaction. • enews@ArabianHorses.org

A never-before released Dr. Seuss book is coming out this fall By Michelle Lou and Saeed Ahmed
Children will soon be cheering yea and neigh.
A new Dr. Seuss book, titled "Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum," is hitting the shelves 28 years after the acclaimed author died. The book, which comes out in September, celebrates art and "how we all see the world in different ways," publisher Random House said in a recent statement.

Fans of Seuss' previous works will be delighted to see some of their favorite characters again. Some of the classic Dr. Seuss characters, including the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, and Horton the Elephant, also make cameos in the book. Dr. Seuss, whose real name is Theodore Seuss Geisel, died in 1991 at age 87 after writing and illustrating dozens of playful children's books, including "Green Eggs and Ham" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" The manuscript for "Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum" was discovered in the late author's La Jolla, California, home 21 years after his death. Using Geisel's original sketches and taking inspiration from his past work, Australian illustrator Andrew Joyner completed the unfinished artwork. "We're so excited to have 'Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum' to share with readers, and to give them an inside look at how Ted thought about art, and how he viewed the world—which was with a creative eye, and a passionate belief in imagination," said Susan Brandt, president of Dr. Seuss Enterprises. In 2015, the posthumous release of Dr. Seuss' "What Pet Should I Get?" became a #1 New York Times bestseller.

Offering Up to $1,000 to People Who Adopt Wild Horses
BY KRISTINA BRAVO
The federal government is offering up to $1,000 to people who adopt untrained equines.
The Bureau of Land Management promoted its Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Incentive Program with a tweet on Monday. “The goal of the program is to reduce BLM’s recurring costs to care for unadopted and untrained wild horses and burros while helping to enable the BLM to confront a growing over-population of wild horses and burros on fragile public rangelands,” the agency said in a statement.
Late last year, federal officials in Northern California began rounding up 1,000 wild horses to be put up for sale and adoption. The U.S. Forest Service said the Devil’s Garden Plateau near the Oregon border had exceeded the limit for how many horses it could hold. The agency built a new corral northwest of Reno, paving the way for the death of wild horses sold for as little as $1 each to buyers who might send them to slaughterhouses. Under the BLM’s program, those who adopt a wild horse or burro will be eligible to receive $500 within two months for the adoption and another $500 within the same time period for the titling of the animal. 78

YELLOWSTONE:
Season Two; Paramount Sets Return of Kevin Costner Series Paramount Network today announced that season two of hit series Yellowstone will premiere on Wednesday, June 19 at 10 p.m., ET/PT and shared a first-look photo of Season 2. The first season averaged 5.1 million total viewers per episode, making it 2018’s most-watched new cable series and ranking second across all cable TV series for the year. Starring world-renowned actor and Oscar(R)-winner Kevin Costner, Yellowstone is co-created by critically-acclaimed, Oscar(R)-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario), and John Linson. The impressive cast list for Yellowstone also includes Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White and Gil Birmingham. Yellowstone returns to the air after its hit first season, in which it was 2018’s most watched new cable series and the most-watched watched drama series premiere on ad-supported cable television since 2016’s The People vs OJ Simpson. Over the course of the season, the show averaged 5.1 million total viewers (P2+), beating cable hits like American Horror Story (4.8M), Vikings (3.7M), The Alienist (3.5M), Better Call Saul (3.3M) and Westworld (2.7M), among others. During its nine-episode first season, Yellowstone garnered more than 20 million digital views. The show’s fanbase grew throughout the season, with four of the last five episodes hitting series-high ratings in its demographic (P25-54) and season one’s finale outperforming the premiere, with 5.4 million viewers (P2+) tuning in. Yellowstone, Paramount Network’s epic scripted dramatic series, stars Costner as John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park. The Paramount Network original drama is co-produced and cofinanced by 101 Studios. Executive producers for Yellowstone are John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner and David C. Glasser. 82

Neurologic Horses
Euthanized in AZ, CA By KIMBERLY S. BROWN
Two horses in Arizona and one horse in California have been confirmed or suspected positive for equine herpesvirus. One horse in Maricopia County, Arizona, was ill with herpesvirus, but it did not have the neurologic form. The other two positive horses had neurologic signs and were euthanized.
One mare that had non-neuropathogenic herpesvirus was at the St. George/Hurricane, Utah, Dixie Classic horse show at Washington County Legacy Horsepark.
84
California The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) confirmed a case of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Alameda County on March 26. The horse was a 3-year-old Thoroughbred mare that had onset of severe neurologic signs on March 23. The vaccination status was not reported. The mare was euthanized. One barn of exposed horses was placed under quarantine with enhanced biosecurity measures and twice-daily temperature monitoring. CDFA personnel were on-site and continue to monitor the situation. Arizona The Arizona Department of Agriculture confirmed an 8-year-old Quarter Horse mare was positive for EHV-1. Her onset of clinical signs was March 21, and those signs included fever, tachycardia and limb edema. She was sent to a vet hospital and tested positive for nonneuropathogenic herpesvirus. This mare had been at the St. George/Hurricane, Utah, Dixie Classic horse show at Washington County Legacy Horsepark.

OUR MAGNIFICENT STALLIONS ARE BORN PERFORMERS. FROM THE BEGINNING THESE HORSES ARE STARS IN THE MAKING. Did you know that Medieval Times is North America's Largest breeder of Andalusian Stallions? Located in Sanger, Texas, Chapel Creek Ranch is 230 acres of sprawling fields and beautiful horses. Here, our pure Spanish horses are born and
Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament
begin their path to stardom! Following their performing years, our magnificent horses travel back to the ranch for a serene and peaceful retirement. Learning the Ropes The beginning of life on the ranch is a beautiful event. Early human contact is important, and the young foals are attended with the best veterinarian care. As soon as the yearlings are ready, training
begins with simple steps, like an introduction to lead ropes and halters. Once they understand how to work with the ropes and halters, which generally takes a year or two of gentle workouts, they're ready to graduate to saddle training. Long reins and simple exercises such as lunging follow. Around the age of three, the horses move to their new homes – one of our royal castles – where they find clean, comfortable and secure stables fit for
a queen. At the castle, they continue their training and learn advanced-level dressage from the Master of Horses The relationship between the horses and trainers is a powerful one. The Master of the Horses spends years working with our royal horses, training them to stay true and strong in the most heated moments of battle. Each horse, no matter the breed, has its own personality. The Master of Horses works with their temperaments, helping the bashful to grow bolder and the wild to grow tamer. The Master of Horses uses these personalities to help pair the horses with the right rider. Each horse works with a specific group of knights. This bonding in the form of daily walking and riding, can take weeks or months. But, once the bond is made, the rider and the horse become one in the performance, expressed in grace, strength and speed. The Master of Horses ensures the health and happiness of the horses, who can serve a knight for 12 years or more. The Master of Horses tends to the castle's stables, ensuring all the horses are comfortable, clean and fed with the finest hay and grains in the kingdom.
Retirement
Once our horse performers start to slow down a little, the Master of Horses determines if it is time to bid a kind adios and ease them into retirement. It is a sad moment when a horse has to leave the castle for good. The bond between the horses and the knights is so strong, it can be bittersweet for all. But, a long and happy retirement awaits the horses back at the place they started, the Chapel Creek Ranch. In the serene setting, we make sure our horses live out their lives in royal treatment. They give us so much. Our horses enjoy a retirement with the best veterinarian care, delicious food, warmth, comfort and socializing with all of the other horses on the ranch, young and old. 88

Once forgotten and neglected horse earns NATRC’s highest award
A grade chestnut mare owned and ridden by Victoria Whitehead of Tuskegee, Alabama, was named the 2018 winner of the North American Trail Ride Conference’s highest award, the President’s Cup, at the organization’s national convention held March 8-9, 2019 in Reno, Nevada. Life wasn’t always the winner’s
92
circle for Grace. Whitehead originally discovered Grace in 2011 in a pasture with little grass and no hay. The young mare was a walking skeleton. “She was so emaciated that when I went to catch her, she didn’t even bother walking away,” said Whitehead, recalling that day. She named the two-year-old
APRIL 2019
“By the Grace of God” because of Whitehead’s faith in God and what He brought into her life. The pair spent the next three years working on trust, including lots of groundwork, and rebuilding Grace’s health. At just six weeks under saddle, Whitehead decided to enter a NATRC competitive ride. It was to be Grace’s first and only Victoria’s second competition. Whitehead describes what happened in a single word– disaster. Regardless, she took it as a sign to persevere with Grace and NATRC. “Because spirits are easily broken on the ground and it is the act of getting up that gives us strength, I realized NATRC was exactly what both this filly and I needed,” said Whitehead. Another three years and many NATRC competitive rides later, Whitehead’s goal for 2018 was simply to earn a national championship. They achieved that goal in April, with much of the ride year left to go. By mid-year, they found themselves at the top of the national NATRC standings. “I have never been one of those hard core competitors, riding for points and glory. My competition has always been within myself. Do my best, have fun while I’m doing it and the rest will work itself out,” said Whitehead. Friends and fellow competitors encouraged her. Whitehead says her reaction was, “Okay, I will continue to ride Grace the rest of the year and do what we can do. Why not raise the bar and shoot for the moon? We might just land among the stars!” After more than 10,000 miles of trailering to different states and regions to compete in 16 NATRC rides, they did land in the stars. Together, Whitehead and Grace earned her region’s heavyweight top award, top national honors in NATRC for overall heavyweight horse, overall heavyweight horsemanship, the overall combined horse and horsemanship award, a national championship and the high point grade horse award.

drive, the weather is awesome so we know you will be getting ready to be on the road Nate Brekken hauling either to a favorite place or a new destination! We want you to get there safe and have fun! Tire safety and maintenance is huge for anyone hauling a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer. The same checks you perform on your truck can also be done on your trailer. Look for side wall cracks or dry rot, look into the tread of your tire to see if you see the same concerns. If your truck and/or trailer has been sitting in the sun, these will be obvious. Have the tires replaced if there is any sign of these concerns. Other Things To Check For And Consider In Your Tires: * Have your tires balanced and rotated every 5 thousand miles for best wear and life of the tire * Any major tire sales store can perform this service for a minimal fee * Have your suspension looked at for loose parts (i.e. ball joints and tie rod ends) * Check your tire pressure - this can also be a huge deal since correct tire pressure helps the tires wear correctly * Helps with fuel economy * Typically our trucks have a load range E tire which has an inflation pressure max of 80 PSI * Towing and/or normal driving should keep the tire pressures in the manufacturer's specs which should be between 60 and 80 PSI * Trailer tire pressures may vary per tire and trailer * The higher the tire pressure, (i.e. 80PSI tire kept at 75 PSI) the cooler it will run. This will extend the life of the tire and improve performance of the tire during towing. Strictly Diesel, we are here to help. Strictlydiesel.com 623-582-4404

THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the
Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.
