Because horses can go where SUVs and ATVs can't. - The U.S. Space Force may be the most high tech branch in the U.S. military, but it has one of the lowest tech vehicles known to man: a horse named Ghost. Ghost helps patrol Vandenberg Air Force Base, located in southern California. Vandenberg, the third largest air force base in America, includes rough terrain that makes getting around on a horse a must. The U.S. Space Force, America’s newest military branch, has its eyes on the stars—and its hooves firmly planted on Earth. The Space Force, entrusted with the absolute latest in military technology, also relies on a millennia-old vehicle—a horse named Ghost. The United States Space Force has a new recruit in their mission to keep planet Earth safe. His name is Ghost, and he likes to go clip-clop on the beach. Ghost, a 5-year-old mustang, is the newest addition to the Conservation Military Working Horse program, which the Space Force recently inherited from the U.S. Air Force. According to a video tweeted by the Space Force, Ghost just joined a stable of four Military Working Horses at Vandenberg Air Force Base — a 99,600-acre (40,306 hectares) chunk of land on the California coast. (That's roughly

By Rodie Owen "It's 100% payback, a rodeo for the kids, by the kids" was the immediate response by Blake Huerta when I asked him "Why do you like riding at Arizona Mafia Rodeo events?" It quickly became evident that is what they stand for through and through. My son has been begging to ride for 2 years, so when I saw the poised, polite, well dressed rider, Rodie Holland, standing in front of our local farm supply store working a booth to raise money for their next rodeo, I knew this was the group to ride with. " By the kids, for the kids" is taken very seriously. Its the kids selling the merchandise like stickers, t shirt, hats (available at http://www.azrodeomafia.com) plus raffle tickets for 50/50 and 14

100 times the size of Central Park in New York. Let's just get this out of the way: No, Ghost is not going into space. Horses are notoriously bad at operating computers, and NASA has had enough trouble sizing their space suits for bipeds lately. Nor is Ghost being trained for combat, despite his cool military

credentials. So, how does Ghost spend his workdays, if not dreaming of the stars or distant shores? According to Staff Sgt. Michael Terrazas, manager of the Military Working Horse Program and one of Ghost's handlers, Ghost is sort of a quadrupedal conservation cop. Ghost and his equine colleagues

buckle drawings that allow Dan Holland, co-founder of ARM, to keep the policy of 100% payback to the kids, so they can keep riding in the sport. Just for reference, the jr riders earned back $3100 this weekend! So what does it take to be a roughstock rider? It's way more than just a desire to ride that bull

over and over and paying an entry fee. "Even though its an individual event, it takes a team effort," says Jesse Huerta, Board Member of Arizona Mafia Rodeo. We saw first hand how much support family, other riders, and rodeo personnel give to the young ones. Everyone pitches in whether its rides to and from rodeos, gearing up, settling

help the human members of the Working Horse program traverse the vast hills and beaches of Vandenburg, keeping an eye on the area's many protected species and any intruders that might pose a threat to them. Related content "We enforce fish and game laws, and the horses help us walk off the beaten path to complete our mission," Terrazas said in a 2019 news release (before the Space Force took ownership of the program). "We have even responded to lost hunters and hurt animals." According to the Vandenburg website, 15 endangered or threatened species live within the base's borders. When patrolling the base's far corners with motor vehicles proves too difficult, program members turn to the horses. Ghost has a smaller ecological footprint than an ATV, Terrazas said, making the horses crucial to accomplishing environmentally friendly patrols. Like an astronaut, Ghost is undergoing rigorous training before he can go full-time, currently riding three times a week with a personal trainer. Cleaning up beaches and writing citations for hunters might not be as romantic as exploring the Horsehead nebula, but it's arguably even more important work. Way to go, Ghost! That's four small steps for horse-kind. in on the stock, advice and just moral support. The atmosphere behind the shute abounds of manners, teamwork, (often sharing gear as something can be forgotten easily), mentoring, pride and a revered dress code followed proudly. Seasoned riders gravitated to our young boys, gearing up for their first big ride in a real rodeo, with advice, high fives and "good lucks", followed by "do you need any help?" For us, a family new to the circuit, it took just one ARM rodeo to realize its the type of environment we want our kids surrounded with. A real, "for the kids by the kids" event. “We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!” Melinda Carter

“I had an extended recovery period after an emergency surgery and I was unable to ride. In April 2019 I went on a trail ride with my family and strained my hip flexor. In search of options, I started physical therapy which only brought limited relief. In Feb. I started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation with Dr. Cronin, and now am pain free and am back to riding! My husband has just started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation and is quite pleased after just one treatment! Our daughter is also receiving chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Cronin. We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!”

Blake Shelton’s "HAPPY ANYWHERE" Conert

In a unusual response to the Covid crisis Shelton ensured that fans everywhere could be “Happy Anywhere” by bringing his live show to nearly 300 outdoor venues across the nation and into Canada on Saturday night (7/25). The event with Encore Drive-In Nights featured cinematic interviews with

and all-new performances from the entertainer as well as special guests Stefani and Trace Adkins. Country superstar Blake Shelton can be “Happy Anywhere” – but it sure doesn’t hurt when that “anywhere” is at the top of the charts. The hit-maker shot to No. 1 on the iTunes all-genre

chart on Friday with the release of his newest single with duet and real-life partner Gwen Stefani, and today the song becomes the week’s most-added at country radio with 119 total stations. With 116 Mediabase stations already on board, “Happy Anywhere” earns the third highest first week add

Buzz the Police Horse retires from the force after 15 years and will live with His Patrol Partner

Animals have long been an important part of the police force. While K9 police dogs often rightly get credit for their work in the line of duty, the police horses of the mounted units sometimes don’t get their due. But a police horse and his

partner have worked hard to promote the good these horses do for their communities… and now after years of service, Buzz is retiring from the force. Officer Lorie Phillips is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s mounted

www.MistAmerica.com

division, and her partner is a horse named Buzz.

The two formed a strong bond, and Phillips hoped they could help reach people and inform them about police horses. “I want to let everyone know how beautiful and useful mounted police horses are,” she told Horse Nation.

“I often feel mounted patrols are forgotten or misunderstood, and wanted to reach across the world and let everyone know mounted units are needed and still a valuable asset to our citizens.” Buzz, named after astronaut Buzz Aldrin, has been part of the mounted patrol since 2005. He is now 19 years old. While police horses have a longer lifespan than dogs and have longer police careers, Buzz has reached the age of retirement and is stepping down from the force. Luckily, he’ll have a good home: he will still belong to Officer Phillips. While she is sad their professional career together is coming to an end, she’s happy they’ll still be together. Phillips says she’s looking for a trailer so they can continue to travel the country and appear at events, continuing to spread the word about police horses. And his social media accounts will continue, following Buzz’s adventures as a civilian -

Charlie Daniels – It Don’t Get No Better Than That (1936-2020)

By Brian Hurlburt

Charlie Daniels and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo fit together like horse and saddle. Or cowboy and hat. Or a barrel racer and a fast, talented horse. And, most appropriately, they fit together like Charlie Daniels and his world-famous fiddle …

The legendary country musician and icon passed away at 83 on July 6, 2020. His songs and presence at the Wrangler NFR will be missed by fans, competitors and event organizers. Daniels was such a huge part of the Wrangler NFR that in 2015, Las Vegas Events and PRCA leadership asked him to record the definitive NFR song. During the 10 days and nights of the NFR, Daniels regularly performed at Las Vegas venues and also at the Thomas & Mack Center prior to the rodeo action.

20

Charlie and his NFR song, “It don’t get no better than that”, were a 95 ride, right from the start. As part of the festivities surrounding the song’s release, Daniels was given the key to Las Vegas by Mayor Carolyn Goodman and also performed it live at the Thomas & Mack Center prior to the eighth go-round. As I wrote in 2017 after

interviewing the legend, it took him about 8 seconds to say yes when asked to write the definitive rodeo song. “There’s no doubt about it … the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas is my favorite time of year,” Daniels said that day. “Being such a big rodeo fan, writing a song about cowboys and cowgirls, broncs and bulls, and

AUGUST 2020

the excitement that surrounds the Wrangler NFR in Vegas every year was a natural for me.” “I absolutely love rodeo and I believe it’s the ultimate sport, and there’s no doubt to me that the Wrangler NFR is the greatest show on earth,” Daniels said. “ This is the best of the best battling for 10 nights in a row. Everything about it is world-class, from the pyrotechnics to the grand entry, and watching the cowboys and cowgirls lay it on the line like they do is unbelievable and inspiring.” Even the newer generation of rodeo stars loved and respected Daniels for his talent and personality. Daniels’ many accolades included the 1998 Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music, and the 2005 BMI Icon Award at the 53rd annual Country Music Awards and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016. As only Charlie could write it, sing it and fiddle it, we give him the final word, just as he wrote in the NFR’s theme song. “At the NFR … it don’t get no better than that.”

COLE HAUSER Cole Hauser’s great-grandfather was movie mogul Harry Warner a founding partner of Warner Bros., one of the greatest production companies of all-time. His mother Cass Warner founded her own production company Warner Sisters, and his father Wings Hauser was an actor the son of Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dwight Hauser.

Hauser's parents divorced in 1977, when he was two years old. According to him, at roughly fifteen, he first met his father after years of separation. His father took him in for a year and taught him about auditioning. Prior to that, his mother had moved Hauser and his half-brother and sisters from Santa Barbara to Oregon to Florida and then back to Santa Barbara within a 12-year-span. At the time, he participated heavily in sports, but half-heartedly pursued school. He was admitted to a talent summer camp in New England, then won the leading role of the stage play named Dark of the Moon, which earned him standing ovations for his performance. At 16 years old he decided to leave high school to try to break into acting. Hauser made his film debut in School Ties (1992), which starred many young and up-and-coming actors such as Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnell and Ben Affleck. A role in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused also starring Affleck came along subsequently. In 1995, Hauser played the role of the leader of the campus skinheads in the John Singleton film Higher Learning. Hauser would later re-team with Affleck and Damon when they appeared together in Good Will Hunting (1997). In 2000 he played William J. Johns in Pitch Black and voiced the character in the prequel video game. In 2002, he played a American prisoner-of-war in Hart's War with Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. Then in 2003, he played a Navy SEAL in Tears of the Sun alongside Bruce Willis. He also appeared as a mob boss in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He has since had several leading roles in Hollywood films, including the Mel Gibsonproduced Paparazzi and The Cave. In 2007, he starred with Anthony Anderson in the FOX series K-Ville. That same year, Hauser starred in The Stone Angel adapted from a novel by Margaret Laurence. The film played in various festival circles and had a limited release in Canadian theaters in May 2008. During that same year, Cole filmed other indie productions such as Like Dandelion Dust from a novel by Karen Kingsbury, Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys and the CBS television pilot The Tower. Cole acted in 22 episodes of Chase in 2010, and spent 20142017 on the tv series Gogue, as well as staring in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles in 2015. It was 2019 when he appeared on Yellowstone, with his starring role as Rip Wheeler. Hauser's wife is former actress and photographer Cynthia Daniel, who played Elizabeth Wakefield in the TV series adaptation of Francine Pascal's hit novel series Sweet Valley High alongside her twin sister Brittany Daniel. Hauser and Daniel have three children: son Ryland (2004); son Colt (2008); and daughter Steely Rose (2013). Photos Courtesy of the Paramount Network

Update: AAEP parasite control guidelines 2020 by Rosemary Bayless, DVM, MS, DACVIM (LAIM)

This succinct review of equine internal parasite control measures reflects modern strategies now in place to reduce development of resistance. Many horse owners have heard about parasite resistance from other equine professionals, members of the horse community and internet sources but may not be familiar with the most up-to-date recommendations for responsible equine internal parasite control programs. Veterinarians continue to play a key role in educating horse owners about comprehensive parasite control strategies designed to keep horses healthy and limit parasite resistance. To help veterinarians stay abreast of current recommendations, the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee and Parasite Control Subcommittee collaborated in 2019 to update the AAEP Parasite Control Guidelines (initially published in 2013). The updated guidelines offer a concise review of clinically relevant equine intestinal parasites, explain several key terms that are central to understanding the basis of modern parasite control and highlight the following important components of a comprehensive internal parasite program:

Methods of estimating parasite burden and degree of resistance Environmental measures for controlling internal parasites Judicious use of anthelmintic drugs (i.e. dewormers) Assessing parasite burden Gone are the days when blanket administration of a dewormer to every horse on a strict bimonthly or trimonthly schedule, often using a rotation of multiple classes of anthelmintics, was considered the best practice for controlling equine internal parasites. Today’s approach reflects what the equine veterinary and scientific communities have since learned: Horses, even those residing on the same property, are not uniform in their internal parasite profiles or their need for anthelmintic treatments. A major feature of modern parasite control recommendations is targeted treatment of young horses, horses showing clinical signs consistent with parasite infections and horses shedding high numbers of eggs in their feces.

Fecal egg count testing

To establish an idea of which horses are moderate or high egg shedders (relevant for devising individualized deworming plans), fecal egg counts (FECs) should be performed on fresh or recently collected and refrigerated manure samples obtained after the effective period of previously administered anthelmintics is expected to be over (typically 8 weeks post deworming for most anthelmintics). Because the intent of FEC testing is to provide information about a specific horse’s innate ability to regulate parasite burden, collecting fecal samples too soon after deworming can interfere with interpretation of basal FEC, although intentional repetition of FEC testing before and two weeks after anthelmintic administration is useful for assessing parasite resistance. Ideally, FEC testing should be completed on all horses because the egg shedding profile is individualized for each horse (low, moderate or high shedding for adult horses; strongyle-type eggs versus ascarid eggs for young horses). Conducting several FEC tests over time may yield a more complete idea of a particular horse’s egg shedding status. However, there is evidence that an adult horse’s FEC category is typically stable given systemic health, a consistent environment and appropriate pasture management, so once an egg shedding category has been established, 50

the usefulness of annual or semiannual FEC testing is uncertain in adult horses maintained in the same environment. When interpreting FECs, it is important to keep the following in mind: Eggs of certain parasites (e.g. tapeworm, pinworm) are not readily detected in standard fecal flotation protocols. Large strongyle and small strongyle (i.e. cyathostomin) eggs cannot be differentiated without fecal culture to yield larvae that can then be identified, although a vast majority of strongyle-type eggs tend to be from small strongyles. Only patent infections, with adult female worms laying eggs into the gut lumen, will be evident. FEC testing can provide information about the shedding status of strongyle-type or ascarid eggs in horses, but the results should not be interpreted as reflecting the total adult strongyle or ascarid burden.

Fecal egg count reduction testing

The most widely used method for evaluating the efficacy of an anthelmintic is fecal egg count reduction testing (FECRT) to determine the number of eggs per gram of feces (epg) prior to deworming and again 10 to 14 days later. FECRT results can be averaged within a group of tested horses on the same property. FECRT findings should be interpreted at the farm level, not on an individual horse basis, as percentage reduction in FECs can vary widely among individuals. Exposure to resistant parasites should be similar among horses housed in the same environment, so it likely is not necessary to conduct FECRT on every horse on a property. However, use of post-deworming samples from at least six horses in which parasite eggs were detected prior to deworming is recommended. Horses that have resided on the property for at least one year and have the highest pretreatment egg counts should be prioritized for FECRT sample collection. Repeating FECRT on the same property at least every three years is suggested for reassessing anthelmintic efficacy. Veterinarians should keep in mind that low percentage reduction in egg counts after deworming is not definitive for true parasite resistance to a particular drug, as other factors, including incorrect dose (based on inaccurate body weight estimates or due to accidental losses during administration), improper dewormer storage and use of expired anthelmintic products, may also reduce efficacy. For properties where an anthelmintic appears to be efficacious and clients wish to be proactive, monitoring of the egg reappearance period— the amount of time between deworming and detection of strongyle eggs in feces—can be used to help anticipate the emergence of resistance. When compared with the expected egg reappearance period for a particular drug, a shorter egg reappearance period (i.e. less time elapsed between deworming and reappearance of strongyle eggs) is a harbinger of developing resistance.

Environmental parasite control measures

Many veterinarians recognize that horses with asthma often respond poorly to appropriate medications when environmental modifications are not implemented as recommended. In the same way, even the most carefully planned and executed deworming protocol can have limited efficacy and may promote parasite resistance if not combined with proper environmental control measures: Frequent removal of manure piles from pastures or dry lots is ideal for reducing the chance that eggs passed in feces will mature and

subsequently expose grazing or browsing horses to infective life stages. However, this is not practical on all horse properties, especially those with large acreage or many horses. Climate should be considered when making recommendations for other environmental parasite control practices, such as rotation of pastures, as the potential benefits of pasture rotation for reducing the parasite infection risk in horses and the minimum time needed to keep horses off a pasture can vary, depending on temperature and moisture level. Any manure intended to be spread on pasture should first be properly composted to achieve the high temperature needed to kill parasites.’

Strategic use of anthelmintic drugs

As with antimicrobial drugs, responsible use of anthelmintics is critical to extend the useful lifespan of available equine dewormers. The guidelines advocate separate approaches to deworming for adult versus younger horses.

Adult horses

In mature horses, the frequency of dewormer administration should be guided primarily by the results of individual FEC testing (i.e. targeted treatment or selective therapy) in an effort to reduce selection pressure for anthelmintic resistance. Horses classified as low shedders (0-200 epg), which typically constitute a majority of horses in the general equine population, should receive once- or twice-yearly deworming with products predicted to be effective against small strongyles (including encysted forms), large strongyles, tapeworms and bots, along with Habronema and Draschia spp, the causative agents of summer sores. Timing of anthelmintic treatment should reflect seasonal patterns of parasite transmission (e.g. targeting tapeworms and bots in the late fall/ early winter and encysted small strongyles at the end of the grazing season when mucosal burden is often highest); the goal of treating horses when pasture refugia is high is to facilitate maintenance of susceptible parasite populations. The common spring/fall deworming schedule also avoids administration of anthelmintics during periods of the year (e.g. hot summer, freezing winter) when conditions are not conducive to larval survival and transmission because of temperature extremes. Additional dewormer treatments during the year are indicated for horses in which FECs demonstrate moderate (200-500 epg) or high (>500 epg) levels of strongyle-type egg shedding, in large part to reduce the number of eggs being released into the environment.

Young horses

Strategies for deworming young horses (<3 years of age) differ from those used for adult horses in two main ways. First, although FEC is a cornerstone of designing anthelmintic protocols for mature horses and remains important for evaluating predominant egg type (strongyle versus ascarid) as well as anthelmintic efficacy in young horses, current recommendations discourage using FEC findings to decide which young horses should be dewormed. Instead, the guidelines advocate deworming at standardized intervals, beginning at 2 to 3 months of age and continuing every three months through 1 year of age. Regardless of fecal egg densities determined by FEC testing, yearlings and 2-year-olds should be considered high shedders and dewormed three to four times per year with appropriate drugs.

For background information and more specifics on current equine internal parasite control recommendations, including practical aspects of designing and implementing parasite control programs, check out the current AAEP Parasite Control Guidelines, available at aaep.org/guidelines/parasite-control-guidelines. Second, because ascarids pose a unique health threat to foals and weanlings, the medications used for the initial deworming should be efficacious against Parascaris equorum (e.g. benzimidazole class). FEC testing should be conducted

$300K grant to protect Arizona Reservations from deadly parasite

PetSmart Charites has partnered with CDC Foundation on a project to prevent the spread of Rocky Mountain spotted fever A pervasive and deadly tick-borne disease has infiltrated communities in Arizona, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Foundation is determined to put a stop to it. The group has received a $300,000 grant from PetSmart Charities in support of a threeyear project, aimed at eliminating Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) from Tribe lands within Arizona. These communities, CDC says, have seen a surge in the disease in recent years, with rates in some areas more than 150 times higher than those of the national average. Further, RMSF cases have been identified in areas of the state where the disease had not previously been seen. The parasite responsible for transmission in Arizona is the brown dog tick, which is typically spread by dogs roaming freely within the Tribal Lands. Animal wellness plays a key role in the disease’s prevention, CDC says, including ensuring community dogs are healthy and tick-free. “Although RMSF can rapidly progress to a serious, life-threatening illness, it is preventable with proven interventions,” says the group’s president and CEO, Judy Monroe, MD. Funding received from PetSmart Charities will support a program coordinator to assist CDC and the communities with scaling up proven prevention methods, as well as facilitating training and coordination of integrated partner outreach related to vector-borne disease prevention and animal wellness. “Working with Tribal, state, and federal partners, CDC has conducted studies showing RMSF prevention is possible,” says Gil Kersh, PhD, chief of the rickettsial zoonoses branch within the division of vector-borne diseases at CDC. “This partnership with CDC Foundation and PetSmart Charities will engage communities and improve animal wellness, putting proven prevention methods into practice.” Specifically, the project, “Preventing Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever on Tribal Lands,” will support communities through:creation of integrated support networks for RMSF prevention and animal wellness in impacted communities; development of resource guides for Tribes to support animal wellness, spay and neuter services, and adoption programs within Tribal communities; and development and dissemination of educational materials on RMSF risk and prevention techniques for Tribal communities. prior to deworming at weaning (age 4-6 months) and at 9 months to assess whether ascarid eggs are still present or the primary target for anthelmintics has shifted to strongyles. The potential for ascarid impaction should be considered when planning anthelmintic programs in foals, especially those with unknown prior management and deworming history. Tapeworms should also remain on the radar in young horses, and use of a cestocidal compound may be beneficial in areas where tapeworms are a recognized problem in adult horses. China Virus

Kills 25% of Pig Population

- Feed additives could mitigate the spread of deadly ASF

Kansas State researchers say antiviral chemical additives help save the global pig population Feed additives might be the key to controlling a rapidly spreading animal virus that is killing the world’s pig population and threatening human food security. This is according to a newly published study out of Kansas State University (KState). The research, led by Megan Niederwerder, DVM, PhD, assistant professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology in the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine, explores how antiviral chemical additives in food can help mitigate risk of African swine fever (ASF) transmission. The findings, Dr. Niederwerder

58

AUGUST 2020

says, could be a game-changer for the global swine industry. “Over the last two years, ASF is estimated to be responsible for the death of at least 25 percent of the world’s pig population due to the emergence of the virus within China and subsequent spread to over 10 other Asian countries,” she says. “In 2019, we published the first report of African swine fever virus (ASFV) transmission through the natural consumption of plantbased feed. Our subsequent work has focused on mitigation of ASFV in feed through the use of chemical feed additives and heat treatment.” At this time, there are no commercially available vaccines or effective treatments to cure the disease caused by the virus, Niederwerder says. Thus, control of ASF instead focuses on biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of the virus into negative countries or negative farms and regions within a positive country. Additionally, large-scale culling of infected or high-risk animals is used to contain the spread of ASFV.

Border Patrol Agents Rescue Missing Horse in Imperial Beach

A horse that had been reported missing since May was rescued last week by U.S. Border Patrol agents in San Diego County, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Monday.

Agents assigned to the Imperial Beach Station found the missing horse named "Ollie" July 15 in the Tijuana River Valley area of San Diego.

Members of the Imperial Beach Station's All-Terrain Vehicle Unit were tracking a group of people who crossed the border illegally

when they discovered a horse tangled in thick brush in the Tijuana River Estuary in Imperial Beach, according to CBP agent Jeff Stephenson. A K-9 team and horse patrol agents joined the ATV team to clear a path to access the trapped horse, which appeared to be weak and in distress. "Once freed, agents checked the horse for visible injuries and

Final time for the dash was 1:10.41 after early splits of :21.58 and :44.73. Prat was winning his sixth stakes of the nine-day old meet and his second victory of the day to assume command in the local jockeys’ race with 16 firsts. For Collusion Illusion’s trainer, Mark Glatt, it was his first Grade I stakes victory. Collusion Illusion is owned by a quartet of Washington State partners -- Dan Agnew, Jerry Schneider, John Xitco and Dr. Rodney Orr. Running third in the $250,000 Crosby was Law Abidin Citizen, who races for the same group that owns Collusion Illusion and also is trained by Glatt. As the favorite, the Floridabred winner paid $5.80, $3.60 and $2.80. He earned a check for $150,000 and moved his bankroll up to $398,751. He now has won five of his six lifetime starts. The Crosby was a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Race meaning Collusion Illusion has won a guaranteed starting spot – with all fees paid – to the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, which will be held at Keeneland in Lexington, KY, on Saturday, November 7. Earlier on the card, the 2-yearold Governor Goteven scampered to a three and one-half length victory in the $100,000 CTBA Stakes for California-bred juvenile fillies. She was ridden by Tiago Pereira and trained by Lisa Bernard, who was winning her first stakes race, as well as first race at Del Mar. Late last year the conditioner took over the horses of now-retired trainer Walther Solis and trains out of San Luis Rey Training Center. The winner is owned by her breeder – Templeton Horses – which is the nom du course of Linda Templeton of Warner Srpings, CA.

BY: JUSTIN FELISKO PUEBLO, Colo. – Jose Vitor Leme to this day has been unable to find another copy of the movie 8 Seconds with a Portuguese voiceover and subtitles since watching the famous movie about the late Lane Frost when he was a young boy growing up in Brazil. The world No. 1 bull rider believes he can learn from the careers, mindsets and lifestyles of previous bull riding legends, and even though he admits his knowledge of Frost is somewhat limited, he still remembers the lasting impression 8 Seconds had on him. “In fact I just learned of him from the film,” Leme said this week. “I don’t know exactly how he was and the titles he won, but for the little that I watched him

in the film, I saw that he was an excellent bull rider and that he certainly would have made a lot more history if he hadn’t suffered that accident. “I watched it dubbed just one time. I already looked for this dubbed movie to buy, but I can’t find it anymore.” Thursday is the 31st anniversary of Frost’s death at the 1989 Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. The 1987 PRCA bull riding champion was 25 years old. For the last three decades, Frost has continued to serve as an inspiration to future generations of bull riders all over the world as his legacy lives on through family and friends, those who have seen the movie 8 Seconds and others who have gone on to read about him or watch highlights of his career.

TUF COOPER SHOOTING FOR ANOTHER ALL-AROUND TITLE

BY TRACY RENCK

Tuf Cooper always had gold buckle dreams.

The Decatur, Texas, cowboy accomplished that goal when he won tie-down roping PRCA world championships in 2011, 2012 and 2014. However, he didn’t believe winning the coveted all-around world championship gold buckle to be realistic. “I never thought I could win it, especially when Trevor (Brazile) was full-time rodeoing,” said Cooper, 30. It was not only a possibility but became a reality for Cooper in 2017. Cooper was crowned the all-around world champion at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas that year, beating out Brazile for the prestigious honor. Cooper earned $301,983 in tiedown roping and $60,107 in steer roping. “It was a dream come true and

one of the coolest things ever,” Cooper said. “God had plans for me to win the (all-around world championship) when Trevor was rodeoing. It was great to get to go head-to-head with the most decorated all-around cowboy ever who happens to be my brother-inlaw.” Cooper is leading the all-around

PRCA | RAM World Standings this season with $66,944. “I just keep on pushing forward with multiple events,” Cooper said. “I wish I could add more events to my plan because I love competing, but for me it is very important to make the Finals in two events (tie-down) roping and steer roping.

Last year, I was the only cowboy to make the Finals in two events, but I didn’t win the all-around. Still, you have to give yourself the best opportunity and as many chances as possible to win the allaround.” Cooper finished third in the 2019 all-around world standings – $32,129 behind champion Stetson Wright. “My first thought was that I was just going to pick up steer roping and do it,” Cooper said. “It might work out here and there, but to be a consistent, really good steer roper it takes years to master. I just try to keep putting in the work every day because I do want to win the world in (steer roping) multiple times. I want to be a world champion in everything I do.” As of July 14, Cooper was second in the tie-down roping world standings with $55,303 and 14th in steer roping with $14,625. Cooper finished fourth in Torrington in 2019 and was in the mix to win the event in 2018 but registered a no time in the finals.

If you Like Aliens, Cowboys, and Cooler Weather, this Ranch in Young, AZ could be for you! By Michelle Shelton, Horse Property Specialist You won’t believe this story…or maybe you will. If you’re like me, and you like aliens, cowboys, and cooler weather, you might want to buy this property in beautiful Young, Arizona. I can’t say if the story is true or not. It can’t be verified. I would encourage you to come and check it out for yourself. The first time I walked the ranch, my clients told me that years ago, when they bought the 20-acre property, they were surprised to find that the survey showed their land included a one-hundred-year-old ”line shack,” a type of cabin used by cowboys. The tiny cabin was propped up on some old cottonwood logs. All the windows were broken, and from one of them hung an old corn shucker. The former occupant ran a dress shop from the property and hundreds of clothes hangers were scattered both inside and out. The shabby, (definitely not chic), rustic little cabin had seen better days. My clients had a vision, and put the cabin on piers, scrubbed the floors, covered them with plywood, and replaced the windows. They also added insulation, interior walls, brought in electricity, and added a screened-in porch. They went on to live in the little cabin for over a year while they built their new living quarters and barn. During the cleanup, they unearthed a few treasures such as antique tools, a hand-hewn table, and an old ceramic cookie jar. We ended the ranch tour in the cabin. I looked around and stepped out of it, I walked 10 feet away and stopped. I looked down and noticed tiny, purple, and yellow flowers around my boots. The air was perfect, neither hot nor cold. I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of the trees gently rustling together and I heard a bird in the distance. I inhaled deeply. A peacefulness filled me. Eyes still closed, I reflected on my drive that morning. Driving away from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix, I could physically feel the stress leave my body. My hands were looser on the steering wheel. I relaxed in my seat, and I cranked up Martina McBride bellowing out, “This One’s for the Girls”. As I drove down the road toward Young, the trees drew long shadows. I could feel the heat diminishing. No traffic. No people. I put the window down and smelled the fresh pine smell and I let the cool wind whip through my hair.

Now as I stood there reliving the experience, I suddenly opened my eyes and blurted out, “I love it. I want it. I need to buy it!” My imagination conjured up the fun this property had to offer. Summers escaping the heat. Horseback riding, quads, and trail hiking on state land. My sellers had erected two Quonset huts they fondly referred to as Thelma and Louise so there was storage for all of our cars and toys. My husband would love the garage’s 10-foot doors through which he could pull both camper and truck to be protected from the elements.

And then there was the barn. It was amazing. An American made MD Barn with plenty of room for the horses and our little donkey, Wilbur. It also included hay storage, covered shelters, pastures (which were fenced and cross-fenced), and living quarters which included a kitchen, two bedrooms, and 2 baths. Ah yes, and the cabin. I was shocked at what had just come out of my mouth and covered it with both hands. "What the heck? I came here to SELL your ranch, not buy it!” I stated. My clients glanced and smiled at each

other then nodded. One of them gestured for me to follow. As she turned toward the house, Becky nearly shouted, “IT’S THE CABIN. I know it sounds strange but the cabin has power. It’s been that way for over a hundred years. Folks around here think it is because, in the Spring of 1914, an old cowboy named Charles Robbert Naegelin encountered aliens.” “What?” I asked. “It’s going to curl your hair,” She trailed off. There was an uncomfortable silence while I waited. And then she began to talk. I leaned in to listen.
