INTERVIEW - TAYLOR SHERIDAN

Hello Taylor, we want to thank you for the time today and the prior interviews with us, plus all of the things that you have done for the horse industry. The Run For A Million sure has been a game changer in so many ways and we want to make sure that you know that before we start.

“Well Tracy, the New York Times called me and asked to do an interview. I told them no. They said, well you have the cover and 5 pages in the Bridle & Bit, why won’t you do an interview with us? I replied, well the answer is no, and you can read into that what you want.”

Q - What inspired you to create “The Run for a Million” event

A - During the first season of Yellowstone, I did a scene that included NRHA riders. When I was talking to these guys about the industry, there was some discussion about the current state of the industry and how it could improve. I thought about it and started work on creating an event that would showcase and elevate the western performance genre. Originally, the first year, we started with only reining. Then we set out to create something that had never been done before with a horse show. We were going to produce a horse show that was an event experience like you have at the NFR. With the help of Mandy Brumley and her team the pieces came together.

Part of that is, I had the idea to film a non-scripted tv show that would showcase the event, the horses and riders. We would film this show during competitions all season long, and then culminate with The Run For A Million competition. Each season of The Last Cowboy TV show gets better and better, just like the live event. It is exciting to watch and is a real hit. We show the World how cool all of this is. It is available to watch on cable, or stream on Paramount+ and CMT.

Every year we add more excitement, competition, concerts, and things to do. This year we added 2 more days to accommodate new events and competition. Working with the Brumley team and South Point are all part of why we can make this event bigger and better every year.

Q - The performances run like a Swiss watch; how do you lead the team to execute the plan?

A -The team gets all the credit, headed up by Mandy Brumley. They have done a phenomenal job of running the event with South Point. The South Point staff, the manager, the staff, the Gaughan Family, everyone does what it takes to make this event happen. We could not do it without them, and they have done exceptional work, year after year. The Run For A Million would not be what it is today without the hard work and dedication of South Point and Brumley Management.

Q - How can people watch the event if they can’t make it to Las Vegas?

A -We now have a cool livestream available and have added interviews, videos and commentary to really give the folks that cannot attend a feel for the excitement of the competition and to be part of the event. Even in the Rookie class, we have the best competition in all categories at this event.

Last year we added a huge video screen, a stage and bar in the ballroom where the vendors are. Everyday there is a concert, the riders all draw their order of go and sign autographs, and you

can watch the show live on the big screen. We keep that area very busy with things going on, it is fun and exciting every day of the event.

We have made it so you can enjoy the event without a ticket. The tickets sold out this year in 10 minutes! But now you can come to Las Vegas, stay at the South Point and enjoy so many aspects of the event. There are so many things going on, and most of the time the concourse is open, and you can walk around everywhere. Then when the ticketed event starts anyone can watch on the huge screen, shop with the vendors, eat, drink and dance.

Q - A New competition was added this year, the Bareback Buck Out Invitational. Where 10 cowboys compete for $150,000. What motivated you to add that layer of excitement onto the event?

A -The top ten PRCA rodeo bareback bronc riders will be competing on the best horses there are. These horses love what they do. They are best bucking horses, and they are bred to do this, they love it. These horses are true athletes. These horses and cowboys are the best in the world, the Top 10. There will be so much excitement, and this competition will have you sitting on the edge of your seat!

Q - You get a lot of bang-for-the-buck attending The Run for a Million, with world-class competition, entertainment, shopping, and socializing. How does it feel knowing that the audience, and competitors look forward to your event, every August, in a very similar emotional way folks feel about the National Finals Rodeo?

A -As I shared earlier, the NFR is the most exciting western performance event that there is. It is an honor to have been able to capture some of that magic. That is what we strive for and keep working hard at since our first TRFAM held in 2019. We work to make each year better and better, with so many new things to do, that you will have something to do every minute that you are there. We also have continued with a focus on having the best of the best in the western performance genre competing and concerts with talent like Lainey Wilson live at the South Point Showroom.

Q - How important do you think Las Vegas and South Point are in the overall success of The Run for A Million?

A -We could not have the event that we do without the hard work and dedication of South Point and their amazing team. They support us in every way possible. I cannot say enough about how great they are to work with. They start planning next year’s event in September! As soon as this year’s event ends and moves out, the South Point management start working with the Brumley Management Team to make it better and better every year. The logistics are crazy. Each day the arena footing, and set-up changes multiple times. Cutting pen, reining, they add chutes for the broncs. It’s high-speed excitement with a lot of logistics and South Point gets it done every time. We could not have done with this event without South Point!

Q - Two years ago, my son and I were in the car driving. On the radio we heard an interview with Lainey Wilson where she gave you a lot of credit for helping her career. She said you heard her sing, spoke with her on the phone, and gave her opportunities that she was so blessed and thankful for. Lainey also credited you

ODED FEIN: ‘THE LORD OF THE RINGS’

Born and raised in Israel with a passion for horses passed on by his father, Oded Fein’s interest in reining horses came later in life thanks to long-time friend Steve Braun. Fein was ‘hooked’ on sliders in no time at all and today owns a breeding facility — MS Stables — in Texas as well as multi-awarded stallion and NRBC Open Classic Champion, Modern Gun, who stands stud at Foals-R-Us.

Taylor Sheridan presents The Run For A Million Championship Ring with Oded Fein, the owner of MS Diamonds TX & the ring designer to winner Kole Price with his wife Kelsey, and the Gokey Family.

Though horses have always held an important place in his life and lifestyle, the passion for diamonds and for carefully hand-crafted jewelry is the business man’s main activity with MS Diamonds TX and Sleipnir World by MS Diamonds TX. Fein joined his passion for high jewelry and horses in 2016 when he produced a custom made ring for the NRHA Open Futurity Champions.

Since championship rings have long been part of North American sports and an athlete’s number of championship rings is often used as a tally of their personal success, Fein set his mind to make that happen in equestrian sports. “This is was exactly what I was thing when in 2016 I decided to bring forth the idea of a Championship ring for the NRHA Open Futurity Champion and owner of the winning horse,” he says. “The big major professional sports leagues in North America have trohpy rings and when my team and I designed the first draft of the NRHA Futurity ring, I kept saying to myself ‘the NBA and NFL have it…NRHA will have it too.’” Fein credits NRHA past president Frank Costantini and NRHA past Commissioner Gary Carpenter for helping him make it happen.

“Thanks to their support, we came up with the one-of-a-kind diamond ring, a unique hand-crafted masterpiece inspired by the deep traditions of the western horse, adding the National Reining Horse Association to the list of professional sports where the championship ring is a testimonial for the riders and owners to keep for themselves symbolizing their victory in the world’s most prestigious reining event,” says Fein.

In 2019, when the first edition of The Run For A Million was announced, Fein contacted Amanda Brumley with the idea of producing a ring for the owner of the Champion horse in the Invitational Million Dollar Championship and the idea was welcomed by Taylor Sheridan and Brumley.

Fein felt it was important that the owner be awarded the ring as an being an owner himself. He found that owners play such an important role in the sport and needed to be in the spotlight. In no time, the custom-made ‘Vegas Ring’ was produced. Each and every detail was studied carefully: The central yellow diamond represented Yellowstone, the series. Since the first edition saw 12 riders taking part in the invitational, 12 white diamonds on one side represented the number of participants, and 12 yellow diamonds on the other side were the “yellowstones” for each rider. To make it all the more special and connected to the series, the ring’s shape represents a movie camera and the round ring inserted inside represents the lens of the camera and it spins…as reining horses do! The internal ring may be taken out of the ring and worn by itself: One size has one million written on it and on the other side RFM. The inside has the wording ‘champion.’

INTERVIEW - DARRIN & DUSTIN HAALA

Q - Darrin & Dustin Haala, you started HAALA Denim as a fashion brand. When did you start on this journey, and what was the inspiration behind this new endeavor?

A - We started HAALA Denim in 2010. Early inspiration came from our hobby of doing custom washing on raw jeans out of our own bathtubs and sinks. We were inspired from being premium denim enthusiasts as consumers. We didn’t know exactly where it would take us, but decided to make a run at it with an

as the best place to build a manufacturing team for premium denim. Throughout a five-year brand development process we learned a lot, made mistakes, and invested everything we had (time and money) into creating a brand that could become special.

Q - Starting a new business and premium jean brand from the ground-up, in a market that many would say is crowded with other brands, is intimidating. How did you stay true to the brand ideals, while continue to move forward with your plan?

initial investment from Dustin to start R&D. When that decision was made, Darrin was still working as a model in NYC, making trips to the garment district and working with a pattern maker to learn the basics of sampling. Dustin was working in the corporate world and the plan was for Darrin to develop the product and build the manufacturing structure while Dustin financed it until he could join full time.

In order to do that, we both moved to Los Angeles together because we saw it

A -It’s definitely a lot to take on! Manufacturing a product at this level is a passion driven journey itself, but then there’s the business aspect. When you first start and nobody’s heard of you, there is a lot of rejection. When we were a few years into our men’s fashion line (2013), we had a nice product, but we were at the mercy of the store buyer. Someone else was going to decide whether we were getting placed into a store or not.

have forced us to drastically reduce the quality of our product and payment terms that would potentially bankrupt us. Initially, this experience felt like a major setback. In hindsight, it made us think differently and ultimately made us better.

Selling to numerous boutique stores allowed us to stay true to our brand ideals but didn’t necessarily produce the volume of sales we needed. We garnered interest and even a contract from a large national retailer but quickly realized how lobsided the terms were; pricing terms that would

All we needed was a direct path to the consumer so they could experience the quality. That opportunity came from the Equestrian / Western world when we began testing a customized performance stretch riding jean.

DARRIN & DUSTIN HAALA

Q - How long did you work on this project before Haala Jeans really started to gain traction?

A - 8 years.

Q - What attracted you to make a riding jean for equestrians? The lifestyle and need for a great pair of jeans on a daily basis. We also really liked the idea of being able to reach the audience directly.

A - After researching and building a show schedule, being a vendor at horse shows throughout the country has been monumental in providing customers a location to try our product on. We felt this would be the best way to connect with our customers and be a part of the community at the same time.

Q - The Haala jean is generally seen under the tough conditions of riding and showing horses, however these jeans can go from the barn to the red carpet. What makes Haala Jeans different?

A - Our goal was to offer women a pair of jeans they could depend on for riding but also dress up in and look fashionable. One of the most noteworthy parts of the jean is the custom fabric. It’s our secret sauce and has some ingredients in it that are made specifically for this fabric to be comfortable, breathable, light weight, durable, and hold their shape. “They stretch, but don’t stretch out” is a common phrase we often hear from our customers. The fit and overall quality in sewing, wash, and attention to detail are the extras that separate the jean into its own category.

Q - You have opened a storefront at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida. Are there any other Haala pop-up retail locations in the works?

A - Not currently, but perhaps at some point in the future!

Q - Where can we shop for Haala jeans?

A - Shop online at www.haaladenim.com or check out our extensive show schedule on the website if you want to shop our various traveling locations across the country. Also make sure to stop by our store in Arena 2 when visiting the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, FL.

Q - Will you be at The Run For A Million in Las Vegas?

A -Yes, we will have a booth with our entire product line available for purchase. Stop by and try a pair on! We love this show and all the excitement surrounding it. The Reiner’s have been a great supporter of the brand.

Pro rodeo’s 2016 world champion barrel horse, Mary Burger’s

“Mo,” died in July

With great sadness, the Burger family announces the passing of Sadiefamouslastwords, aka “Mo.” As the 2016 WPRA world champion in barrel racing, he won both the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo Houston in the same year and set a new season’s earnings record. His most important role was being Mary’s best friend. Mo was eager to get his cookies every morning

and night and was part of the family. We loved him fiercely and are heartbroken that he is gone.

Mo was 15 years old. Kerry and Mary purchased him around 2 years of age, and Mary trained him to be a champion like she had many before him.

Mo ran from 2013 to 2016 and earned roughly $530,000 in that short time. In his rodeo career, he won numerous rodeos. Mo’s efforts led to Mary being inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, where you can see a picture of them running barrels on the large exterior window.

Wind Her up to a Million

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is proud to announce Wind Her Up Chic has officially joined the esteemed ranks of NRHA Million Dollar Dams. This exceptional milestone marks a significant achievement in the world of reining and solidifies Wind Her Up as the ninth Million Dollar Dam in NRHA history.

Owned by Tim Anderson of NRHA Corporate Partner 21 Ranch, Wind Her Up Chic has consistently demonstrated exceptional talent, athleticism, and versatility in her offspring. The David Nogle-bred mare also boasts an impressive performance record of $102,711 in NRHA lifetime earnings (LTE) all with NRHA $2 Million Rider Todd Bergen and NRHA $3 Million Rider Jordan Larson at the reins.

“It is a huge honor for me that she is in our life,” said Anderson. “Most people around the industry would say I show stallions and geldings, and I am not a purchaser of mares. But I come from a family whose respect was mainly for mares. When mares have this accomplishment, it is huge. They can only have so many foals, so the odds are so slim to reach this milestone, not to take away from the stallion’s accomplishments.”

“Windy,” by NRHA Hall of Famer Smart Chic Olena and out of Wind Her Up Doc, is a half-sibling to another NRHA Million Dollar Dam, Wind Her Up Shiner—further showcasing her royal lineage.

“What is really amazing about this story is that she and Wind Her Up Shiner are two of nine Million Dollar Dams,” said Anderson. “I cannot imagine it will happen again. Wind Her Up Doc [dam of both] was a treasure of a mare. To produce two million dollar producing mares is major and, to me, makes her the most important mare ever in reining.”

NRHA extends its heartfelt congratulations to Wind Her Up Chic, Tim Anderson and Kim Niven, and everyone involved in her incredible journey. We look forward to witnessing the continued success of her offspring and the lasting impact she will have on the reining community for years to come.

Windy’s first foal, Wound Up Wimp, was born in 2009 and was sired by NRHA Hall of Famer Wimpys Little Step. The mare went on to earn $40,284 in NRHA LTE and launched Windy’s offspring record for the history books. At 21 years old, Wind Her Up Chic has already produced an NRHA Level 4 Open Derby Champion, a National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Level 4 Open Champion, and an NRHA Level 4 Open Futurity Reserve Champion.

Wind Her Up Chic’s journey to become the ninth million-dollar mare is a testament to her extraordinary capabilities, the dedication of her trainers, support team, breeders, and successful crosses that led to outstanding offspring.

Wind Her Up Chic’s leading offspring:

Jerseys Baby Driver (by Yellow Jersey), owned by Janice Laney, bred by Cardinal Hill Training Center LLC, earning $250,253

Winding Inferno (by Inferno Sixty Six), owned by Teton Ridge Ranch, bred by Cardinal Hill Training Center LLC, earning $218,038

Starfire Sixtysix (by Inferno Sixty Six), owned by Kevin Corcoran, bred by Cardinal Hill Training Center LLC, earning $79,539

Wimpys Slidewinder (by Wimpys Little Step), owned by Ben Hirschfeld, bred by Oldenburg Farm LLC, earning $67,751

Gunners Chic Magnet (by Gunner), owned by Josef & Tamara Ahorner, bred by Oldenburg Farm LLC, earning $60,926

Wind Her Up Chic joins the prestigious club of NRHA Million Dollar Mares with 23 offspring having NRHA earnings in the show pen. This achievement not only highlights her exceptional talent but also underscores the importance of breeding, training, and nurturing top-tier reining horses.

Lide, Conner Top Earners Over Cowboy Christmas

The 2024 rodeo season and world standings race are heating up and throughout the whole month of July it will be at a fever pitch. The first wave of big money and standings shuffle comes after the Fourth of July week, known in rodeo as Cowboy Christmas.

The top money earner over Cowboy Christmas on the barrel racing side was Halyn Lide of China Spring, Texas, finishing with $32,550 which moved her to No. 11 in the world standing with a total of $60,892. As you might recall she got her year started sharing the win at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver with Hailey Kinsel in January. Lide is now looking for her first trip to the Wrangler NFR and is riding a wave of momentum right now.

Lide’s biggest Fourth of July check came north of the border at the Ponoka Stampede in which world champion Lindsay Sears won. Lide won $14,743 there and added another $10,099 at the Greeley Stampede aboard Jettin’ Ta Heaven, better known as “Keeper.” Her third and final check came at Oakley, Utah, totaling $7,708. “I went into this set of rodeos with big goals, and apparently Keeper had big plans,” wrote Lide on her Facebook page. “At Greeley, Keeper placed in both rounds, won the finals and the average and won Oakley too!” Keeper also got the call in Ponoka and seems to be loving these big rodeos.

Emily Beisel was a close second in total money, after having been the top money earner in 2023. Beisel finished with $30,211 and moved to No. 1 in the world standings. She picked up checks in Ponoka ($17,460), St. Paul, OR ($11,086) and Red Lodge, MT ($1,665). Beisel definitely seems to have her

Fourth of July run figured out. This year

Dat Guy “Chewy” to her arsenal.

On the breakaway roping end Josie Conner was the top money earner cashing checks for

$15,815. Her biggest windfall came in Killdeer, ND, winning $6,322 followed by St. Paul, OR ($4,745) that added breakaway for the first time this year. She also picked up checks in Belle Fourche, SD ($2,612), Cody, WY ($1578), Oakley, UT ($558).

When new standings were released, Conner moved to No. 4 in the world with $62,141. Jackie Crawford held onto the No. 1 spot extending her 2024 earnings total to $90,028 as she looks for her 24th world title in the WPRA. Taylor Munsell, who won the Reno Rodeo the week before the Fourth of July, is second with $77,970 and Danielle Lowman is third with $75,091.

Their work will be on display at live events and through virtual streaming with the goal of creating excitement while providing entertainment for horse enthusiasts around the world.

“This is a dream opportunity for me. The 100X team isn’t scared to run a show differently for the benefit of the horse, rider and industry, which means I can elevate my work to a level the industry has not yet seen. As an industry, we need to retain our current participants and attract new ones. We aren’t just competing for their attention against breed shows, or Ranch Riding, we are competing against pickleball and golf. CBS Sports should be airing reining, not competitive marble racing, and we are on a mission to make it happen.” - Chelsea Sutton

NRSHA CROWNS SIX ALL-AROUND CHAMPIONS

National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance, Amarillo, Texas – During the National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance National Championship Show which was held in conjunction with the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championship at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Amarillo, Texas, six All-Around Champions and 35 class Champions were awarded.

After winning the 2023 High Point Horse of the Year in the Rookie Amateur, Meredith came in with high expectations which played out in her favor. In addition to this competitive milestone, Meredith was able to reconnect with friends and fellow competitors.

brought a new group to the show. It was so much fun just to see and connect with all of the friends and people that we love to go to horse shows with. That’s why we do it, it’s not to win, it’s to go have fun.”

National All-Around Champions were also crowned in four other Amateur and Youth divisions as well as in the Open division. Brianne Hight of Clovis, New Mexico, clinched the win by one point in the Limited Amateur Division aboard her mare Eureka Wild Card also known as Charlie. The 2012 mare is by Wild Card Dun It and out of Colonel C Boonie and was bred by L.A. Waters Quarter Horses in Utopia, Texas.

“Charlie is not really bred to do all this. She’s more in the lines of a rope horse, but she’s got the heart and a willing attitude,” Brianne said. “She just steps up and she’ll do whatever you ask her to do. It’s almost as though this mare wanted it as much as I had, we had been drilling and working so hard on our weak spots, she came in with her game face on and it was outstanding.”

“We got to see friends from across the country, some that we hadn’t seen in a couple of years,” said Meredith. “Amarillo definitely

CDC reports fourth human case of avian flu linked to dairy cow outbreak

CDC reports fourth human case of avian flu linked to dairy cow outbreak

A dairy worker in Colorado reported eye symptoms to state health officials, received oseltamivir treatment, and has since recovered, according to the agency

A human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) has been detected in Colorado, marking the fourth case in a multistate outbreak linked to dairy cows and the first in Colorado, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Previous cases were in Texas (one) and Michigan (two).

The infected person, a dairy farm worker, reported only eye symptoms to state health officials, received oseltamivir treatment, and has since recovered. The CDC is closely monitoring influenza surveillance, and there has been no unusual influenza activity among people in affected states.

According to the agency, this recent infection does not alter the current low-risk assessment for the U.S. public, but highlights the need for precautions for those exposed to infected animals. The agency shares the following recommendations:

Avoid close, long, or unprotected exposures to sick or dead animals, including wild birds, poultry, other domesticated birds, and other wild or domesticated animals (including cows).

Avoid unprotected exposures to animal feces, bedding (litter), unpasteurized (“raw”) milk, or materials that have been touched by, or close to, birds or other animals with suspected or confirmed A(H5N1) virus.

Observe CDC recommendations for prevention, monitoring, and public health investigations of A(H5N1) virus infections in people. CDC also has updated recommendations for worker protection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). For more information about the virus, visit the CDC website.

Marty Yates stays red hot with win at Ogden

Pioneer Days

Nine-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Marty Yates continued an impressive stretch at the Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days Rodeo on Wednesday.

Yates used a third-place finish in the first round and a top finish in the second round to win the average at 14.5 seconds on two head and pocket $16,246.

“I had two really good calves over there. Things just worked out,” Yates told the ProRodeo Sports News. “You know, my horse worked good. I got to run both my calves this morning because I was up in the short round at Salt Lake tonight.”

Yates also nabbed average wins at the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, on Wednesday and at California Rodeo Salinas last weekend.

In less than seven days, the

30-year-old pulled in $34,614.

“Things just started going in the right direction,” Yates said. “For anybody, there’s ups and downs, and when it’s your turn, it’s your turn. It’s nice to finally capitalize a little bit and win some good checks to keep me up there at the top of the standings.”

Yates opened his trip to Ogden with a 7.7-second run to tie for third in the first round to tally $3,181. He followed with a 6.8-second run in the second round to nab $5,226. The average win added an additional $7,839.

On Wednesday, Yates sat sixth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $106,018,

thanks in large part to his late July tear.

“I haven’t had hits like this in a pretty good while,” he said. “It’s just nice to get them here going into the later part of the season. It’s nice to still see your name up there at the top with a good chance to go back to Vegas.”

Yates missed out on the NFR last season for the first time since 2014.

The Stephenville, Texas, resident said things didn’t go

his way last season, but it gave him the opportunity to head home early in the fall and spend time with his family ahead of his daughter’s birth.

“Things worked out the way they maybe should’ve because I got to be home when my little girl was born,” Yates said. “And I got to be around them instead of being gone for the Finals. There was good and bad from missing the Finals, but it will be great this year to take her and enjoy it all.”

New collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim and Sleip leverages AI-technology to help detect lameness in horses

A new global commercial partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim and Sleip will expand access to AI to enhance detection, diagnosis and treatment of lameness in horses. This partnership delivers on the shared commitment of Boehringer and Sleip to deliver innovative solutions that help veterinary

professionals continue to advance their profession and improve the care and wellbeing of horses.

Changes in gait and signs of lameness can be less pronounced at first and difficult to detect. The Sleip app can help make a real difference. Veterinarians can record the horse in

action using a smartphone – no sensors or complicated camera system needed. Sleip’s AIpowered technology then analyzes the horse’s movements and displays the results in the app within minutes, including stride-by-stride analysis video with synchronized biomechanical data. The veterinarian can

follow up immediately, leading to better health outcomes for horses.

“Our aim is to better serve the equine veterinary community, and the Sleip app will help us drive awareness and improve diagnosis and treatment compliance rates for lameness in horses,” shared Saskia Kley, Global Head of Equine at Boehringer Ingelheim. “With this innovative technology, we now have the opportunity to have an even greater positive impact on the lives of horses, and the people who care for them.”

“Sleip draws on decades of equine biomechanical research and advances in artificial intelligence to aid in a better understanding of how and why horses move the way they do,” said Elin Hernlund, DVM, PhD and Chief Medical Officer at Sleip. “Our vision is to improve horse welfare by making Sleip’s technology available for all those who care for horses – improving diagnostics and promoting collaboration around the health of each individual horse to support early detection and prevention. We are thrilled to partner with Boehringer deliver on this mission.”

Have you ever wondered about the intricate digestive system of a horse? One crucial component of their digestive tract is the hindgut. But what exactly is the hindgut and why is it so important for the overall health of a horse?

What is the Hindgut?

The hindgut refers to the latter part of a horse’s digestive system, which includes the cecum, colon, and rectum. This section of the digestive tract is

What is the Hindgut and Why is it Important?

responsible for fermenting fiber and extracting nutrients from the horse’s diet.

Why is it Important?

The hindgut plays a vital role in a horse’s overall health and well-being. Here are a few reasons why the hindgut is so important:

1. Fermentation: The hindgut is where fiber from the horse’s diet is broken down through

fermentation. This process allows horses to extract essential nutrients, such as volatile fatty acids, which are crucial for energy production.

2. Water Absorption: The hindgut is also responsible for absorbing water from the digesta, helping to prevent dehydration and maintain proper hydration levels in the horse.

3. Microbial Population: The hindgut is home to a diverse

population of beneficial microbes that aid in the digestion of fiber and the production of essential nutrients. Disruptions to this microbial population can lead to digestive issues and overall health problems.

4. Health Maintenance: A healthy hindgut is essential for maintaining a horse’s overall health and well-being. Digestive disturbances in the hindgut can lead to conditions such as colic, diarrhea, and laminitis, which can be life-threatening if not properly managed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the hindgut is a crucial part of a horse’s digestive system that plays a significant role in nutrient absorption, hydration, and overall health. By understanding the importance of the hindgut and taking steps to support its function, horse owners can help ensure the well-being of their equine companions.

Americasnextgunmodel New NRHA Million Dollar Dam

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is thrilled to announce Americasnextgunmodel as the association’s tenth Million Dollar Dam. This prestigious achievement recognizes Americasnextgunmodel’s exceptional breeding influence within the reining community.

During her time in the show pen, Arcese Quarter Horses USA’s Americasnextgunmodel (Gunner x Cee Dun It Do It)

earned nearly $290,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE), all with NRHA $4 Million Rider Casey Deary at the reins. The duo reached the pinnacle of success in 2012 when they rode to the NRHA Level (L) 4 Open Futurity Championship, earning $165,000. They also had remarkable finishes at other premier reining events, including the NRHA Derby, the National Reining Breeders

Classic (NRBC), and the High Roller Reining Classic.

While the David Silva Sr.bred mare undoubtedly had a successful show career, her true legacy lies in the remarkable achievements of her offspring. Twelve talented reiners sired by various stallions boast her bloodlines, collectively earning more than $1 million in NRHA competition. This accomplishment places Americasnextgunmodel amongst the elite company of NRHA Million Dollar Mares, a distinguished group of females who have demonstrably shaped the future of reining horses.

The 2009 mare’s most renowned offspring, Americasnexttopgun, has added nearly $426,000 to the dam’s offspring earnings. And, just like his mother, all earnings came with Deary at the reins. Together, they won championships at both the 2020 NRBC L4 Open and the 2022 NRHA L4 Open Derby. Their top check came during their third-place finish at the 2022 The Run For A Million’s Million Dollar Competition.

Americasnextgunmodel’s top-earning progeny nclude:

Americasnexttopgun (by Walla Walla Whiz), owned by Puno Performance Horses LLC and Jody Puno, bred by Arcese Quarter Horses USA, earning $425,893

Americas Supermodel (by Walla Walla Whiz), earning $231,254

Celebrating Unprecedented Success at the 6666 NRHA Derby Presented by Markel

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is thrilled to announce another record-breaking year in the 45th edition of the 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel. This year’s event, held June 11-23 in Oklahoma City, set new records in both participation and prize money, solidifying its status as a premier competition in the reining horse community.

Record-

Breaking Purses and Participation

The 2024 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel saw an unprecedented level of competition, with record-breaking entries and purse. The total prize money awarded exceeded $1.67 million, thanks to the consistent, increasing success of the NRHA Nomination Program, generous sponsor support and the dedication of participants. As an additional bonus, exhibitors were paid out at record-breaking speed! Checks were available in the show office the next day, including the Level 4 Non Pro finalists’. The open finalists’ checks were sent out only three days later, with only a handful of champions’ checks held pending medications testing results.

Ride Guess, powered by Spooks Gotta Whiz, was a new edition to the show that brought in participants from across the globe. This interactive game placed reining fans in the judge’s seat at the Level 4 Open Finals—allowing them to guess the scores of each horse and rider pair and receive points for the correct answers. Produced by NRHA Corporate Partner Teton Ridge, Ride Guess is a product of Inside Rodeo sweepstakes games, which has taken the Western industry by storm. On a peak night at premier Western events, this game sees 100-300 players. At the 2024 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel, over 500 players worldwide participated.

Ceremonial Honors

The event also featured the NRHA Buckle Ceremony on June 15. Champions and top performers were recognized for their exceptional achievements throughout the 2023 season. The World and Reserve World Champions were presented with custom-crafted buckles by NRHA event sponsor Montana Silversmiths, a testament to their hard-earned victories. The Top 20 Professionals, Non Pros, and Owners were also honored, reflecting the depth of talent and commitment within the NRHA community. This year, the NRHA Professionals of the Year were also recognized on stage and received custom Abby Cosenza spurs.

Highlighting Excellence and Dedication

For 45 years, the NRHA Derby has been a celebration of skill, dedication, and the incredible partnership between horse and rider. This year was no exception, as riders from across the world showcased their talents and the culmination of countless hours of training and preparation. The exceptional horsepower was a testament to the dedication of breeders, nominators, and owners who continue to propel the industry forward. The heightened purses rewarded excellence and highlighted the sport’s growth and popularity.

Growth in Fans

This year there were many ways to be part of the action at the OKC Fairgrounds without being physically present. The free live feed at nrhaderby.com hosted 20,545 viewers for the non pro finals and 31,984 viewers for the open finals.

The Level 4 Non Pro and Open Finals were also streamed on the Cowboy Channel with 952 total hours streamed. Additional television coverage was featured on local Oklahoma City news stations, highlighting the horse and rider bonds featured in reining and the excitement of the Derby itself.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate the success of this year’s Derby, NRHA looks forward to continuing to elevate the sport of reining. We remain committed to providing premier events, enhancing prize opportunities, and supporting our members in their pursuit of excellence. The record-breaking achievements of the 2024 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel are a testament to the bright future of reining, and we are excited to build on this momentum in the years to come. Join us at the The World’s Richest Reining—the 2024 NRHA Futurity—the last Futurity to be held in the historic Jim Norick Arena, November 26–December 7.

Thank You to Our Sponsors

We extend our deepest gratitude to our title sponsors, 6666 Ranch and Markel Insurance, and all our NRHA corporate partners, event sponsors, and buckle sponsors, whose support has been instrumental in making this year’s Derby an unparalleled success. Lexington, Ky. – US Equestrian has announced new dates and location for the 2024 Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals – West, which will now be held during the National Sunshine Series 2, from November 6-10, 2024, at the Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, California.

The Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Program plays an important role in developing top jumping athletes by encouraging junior and young riders to develop skills laying the groundwork and foundation for future international success.

Athletes will test their skills over three days, and four phases including Phase I, the flat phase, where athletes will demonstrate flatwork movements while being judged on their position and seat as well as correctness and effectiveness of the aids. Phase II, the gymnastic phase tests competitors over a series of gymnastic lines and has a score multiplier of a point and a half.

Competition concludes Sunday with athletes returning for Phase III, the jumping phase with a jumper-style course a score multiplier of two points. The top total combined scores from the first three phases are used to determine the top four athletes, who will return for Phase IV, the ride-off, in which they swap horses and ride the same course on each of the final four horses to determine final placings.

Kristen Coe, the 1996 Talent Search winner, will judge the 2024 edition of the competition alongside Michael Tokaruk. Coe represented the U.S. on multiple Nations Cup teams and qualified for FEI World Cup Finals on three different occasions. ELEMENTA Welcomes Tribbiani To His Forever Home in Italy

Last week, during the successful AQHA/APHA/ NSBA ELEMENTA Goes West show held at the ELEMENTA Ranch located in Rome, Italy, past NRHA Futurity and Derby Non Pro Champion Tribbiani crossed the big pond to join the elite string of horses owned by one of the top reining horse owners in the world, Maria Cecilia Fiorucci.

Exactly two years ago, at the 6666 Ranch NRHA Derby presented by Markel, young Jack Medows rode a beautiful dark palomino stallion with a big-time name to the Level 4 Non Pro Championship: Tribbiani. Named after actor Matt LeBlanc’s character in the hit series “Friends,” Tribbiani is by NRHA Eleven Million Dollar Sire Gunnatrashya and out of Chicsdreamofdiamonds, a daughter of Eleven Million Dollar Sire Magnum Chic Dream that Medows rode to the 2016 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Non Pro Championship. If his mother’s accomplishments weren’t enough — with $124,433 collected during her show career – Tribianni’s pedigree gets another boost from his maternal granddam, NRHA One Million Dollar Dam Princess In Diamonds.

A little over a week before the 2024 National Reining Breeders Classic, Cooper Smith purchased the talented stallion from the Medows family and handed the reins to NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider Cade McCutcheon with only three days to prepare for their debut together. The duo marked a 224 both in the prelims and in the Level 4 Finals, the seventh highest score of the evening. “This horse is stellar-minded and is more fun to ride in the show pen than he is at home,” said McCutcheon. “He reminds me a lot of Custom Made Gun who I rode to the The Run For A Million co-championship in 2019 for Maria Cecilia. The plan is for me to show Tribbiani at the upcoming 100X show in France and to carry on showing him in Europe. I look forward to being part of the ELEMENTA team and repeating our past success together.”

Thrilled to have McCutcheon on the team and to have the duo show under ELEMENTA colors, Fiorucci was at the ranch to welcome Tribbiani. “He was so calm, cool, and collected when he got off the truck,” she said. “You can tell he is very level-minded and attentive to all that happens around him; we are in love with him and, as all the horses that come to our ranch, this is his forever home.”
