Yellowstone’s Fate Hangs in the Balance: Paramount Considers Season 6

Yellowstone fans may have more to look forward to as Paramount Network is reportedly in discussions to extend the popular series beyond its fifth season. Despite earlier expectations that the series might conclude, talks with stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser suggest that a sixth season could be in the works. This development follows Kevin Costner’s departure, which initially led to speculation that Reilly and Hauser would helm a spin-off. However, it now appears the original Yellowstone series could continue its narrative.

The second half of Yellowstone’s fifth season is set to premiere on November 10th, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Additionally, a spin-off series titled The Madison, set in the present day, is still slated for a 2025 release, further expanding the Yellowstone universe.

Special Event Distribution Grows for Bridle & Bit

Bridle & Bit gave away 1,000’s of copies of the August edition at The Run for a Million event in Las Vegas, where the exclusive interview with Taylor Sheridan attracted significant attention. This heightened interest led to a strong pick-up of the magazine at numerous racks positioned throughout the South Point Arena during the event.

This distribution is part of Bridle & Bit’s broader strategy to leverage key equestrian events throughout the year, ensuring that advertisers’ messages reach a highly targeted and engaged audience. The magazine is distributed at major events including:

NRHA Futurity in November, focusing on the reining horse community.

National Finals Rodeo in December, engaging top-tier rodeo fans and competitors.

Scottsdale Arabian Show in February, appealing to those interested in Arabian horses and related disciplines.

Sun Circuit in January, targeting the competitive

western riding community. Cactus Classic in March, reaching western performance horse enthusiasts.

NRHA Derby in June, connecting with the reining horse community at one of the year’s most significant events. Many other events are reached in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada, and California. By placing the magazine in the hands of event attendees, Bridle & Bit extends advertisers’ reach to a demographic that is deeply involved in and passionate about the equestrian lifestyle. This approach ensures that the advertisers’ messages resonate with individuals who are actively participating in and financially supporting the industry, making it a highly effective platform for reaching this valuable audience.

World Champs Tops in Cheyenne

Sunup to sunset, the 2024 edition of Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) was filled with great performances by world class athletes, great entertainment options, and inspiring stories.

The “Daddy of ‘em All” has a 128-year history and while events have been added, the legacy lies in the rodeo. This year’s theme, “Year of the Cowgirl,” showcased women in and out of the arena. On June 28, CFD dedicated a bronze statue named “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls,” by Wyoming sculptor D. Michael Thomas. It is in a place of honor next to the Chris LeDoux statue. Miniature versions of the bronze were awarded to the Women’s Ranch Bronc Riding, Breakaway Roping and Barrel Racing champions this year.

Over 1,500 rodeo contestants made their way to Frontier Park to be part of the 1.2-milliondollar rodeo. The rodeo’s qualifying rounds were July 13 -17. The quarterfinals began on July 19, where contestants were vying for a spot in the semifinals, July 26 – 27. Championship Sunday featured the top 12 contestants from the previous rounds of competition where everyone started with a clean slate.

Reigning breakaway roping world champion Shelby BoisjoliMeged was emotional on the winner’s platform after winning her event with the fastest time of this year’s rodeo – 3.7 sec-

Champion Jordon Briggs and her horse Famous Lil Jet that she calls Rollo took the win in Frontier Park, a place where her mother Kristie Peterson won four championships in the 1990s. Champions in Cheyenne get a prize package that includes a trophy buckle and trophy saddle. Peterson also took home a trophy bit from the 100th anniversary of this rodeo. Briggs received a special three-foot tall replica of Frontier Park’s new How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls statue as did BoisjoliMeged.

“I missed my calf in the wild card and had to fish my rope around the neck,” she said. “I credit that “cowgirl try” with getting me to today’s finals. Today I thought I had broken the barrier for a couple of strides until I

Her husband is none other than PRCA World Champion TieDown Roper Haven Meged, who recently picked up the silver medal at the Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City. Having someone like that in your corner is priceless. With the win in Cheyenne, Shelby added $16,280 to her 2024 earnings keeping her in a position to try and defend her world title.

In barrel racing 2022 World

Briggs took most of the rodeo season off as Rollo recovered from an injury to a suspensory ligament and had won no money in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association competition as of June 1. Since then, she and Rollo have been taking home paychecks and the $17,000-plus they earned in Cheyenne is an important boost in her quest to return to the NFR or at least end the season in the top 30 to qualify for the big winter rodeos.

Briggs and Rollo captured the win in Cheyenne after stopping the clock in 17.06 seconds, just ahead of LaTricia Duke with a 17.08. Wenda Johnson was third in 17.24 and Leslie Smalygo, who has won Houston and Calgary this year was fourth in a time of 17.40.

With two months left in the regular season it will be an all out push for both Meged and Briggs to move up the standings to put them in a better position for a shot at gold once again in December. These big wins in Cheyenne could be just the boost they need to finish out the year strong.

Make it $1 Million for Muehlstaetter

Kim Muehlstaetter has had a summer of success competing as a non professional in the show pen. Now, she adds National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Million Dollar Owner to her list of accomplishments.

Muehlstaetter first became an NRHA member in 1991 and competed in youth classes. Since then, she has climbed the ranks of competition and has won two NRHA Derby Championships, including the 2024 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel Level 4 Non Pro Co-Championship on Smoky Mountain Rein.

Muehlstaetter said she and husband Martin, an NRHA Million Dollar Rider, found Smoky Mountain Rein as a yearling. Martin trained the Texas Horse Power Ranch LLC-bred horse, who they purchased from Sleipner LLC in 2023 so his wife could take over the reins to prepare for the NRHA Futurity.

“It is special when we get to raise them, and we try to buy a few, too,” she said. “It has been a journey for our family, and now our 13-year-old daughter, Sydney, is also part of it. It has become a passion for our whole family. It is fun that we can all share in it and enjoy doing every part of it.”

New internal parasite control guidelines

Last revised in 2019, the guidelines account for recent advances in knowledge concerning increased anthelmintic resistance and optimization of parasite control management practices. The guidelines also address common misconceptions and offer parasite control program recommendations for senior horses (over 15 years old), mature horses (between 5 and 15 years old), and young

horses (under 5 years old).

The American Association of Equine Practitioners recently released updated guidelines on internal parasite control that account for 10 years of advancements in this area.

Dr. Martin Nielsen, chair of the AAEP task force that wrote the updated guidelines, said in a statement, “We have seen dramatic development in the field of equine parasite control over the past 10 years, since we first launched these guidelines, and we work hard to keep our recommendations up to date.”

The guidelines include several key considerations, such as the following:

Perform fecal egg count reduction tests annually to ensure that you are using effective dewormers in every herd or barn. Recognize that no anthelmintic will eliminate all parasitic stages from a horse.

Continue using fecal egg counts once or twice per year to stratify horses into low, medium, and high shedders to reduce pasture contamination.

Deworm all horses at a baseline rate and target selected horses more often based on fecal egg counts.

Do not use fecal egg counts to diagnose disease in horses as there is no correlation between fecal egg counts and disease-causing parasite life stages.

Discontinue deworming all horses with fixed intervals yearround and stop blindly rotating anthelmintic classes.

In addition to Dr. Nielsen, the task force was composed of 10 AAEP members predominantly board certified in veterinary internal medicine, veterinary parasitology, or veterinary microbiology. The updated guidelines were reviewed and approved by the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee and board of directors.

Horse Feed contamination kills at least 70 bucking horses on Oklahoma ranch

The Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. in Elk City, Oklahoma, is facing an unprecedented tragedy: the loss of 70 to 80 bucking horses, a devastating blow to its 95-year-old family-owned business.

Founded in 1929 by Elra, Jake, and Lynn Beutler, the company has grown into a cornerstone of the rodeo community. Elra’s grandson, Bennie, and his son, Rhett, continue the legacy. The sudden loss of so many horses is an irreparable setback to their generations-deep breeding program, which cannot be easily replaced or replicated.

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry said that in a statement on Thursday that it became aware of the issue on August 23, when a veterinarian reported a potential problem with a bulk feed order linked to the deaths.

On August 26, an ODAFF inspector visited the Beutler ranch, collected feed samples, and determined that the feed originated from Kansas. These samples are being analyzed in state-certified laboratories. ODAFF has also coordinated with the Kansas Department of Agriculture as part of the investigation and has assisted with carcass disposal to ensure all state regulations were followed.

State Veterinarian Dr. Rod Hall has advised livestock and pet owners to carefully review feed labels and consult with veterinarians if they have concerns about feed safety.

Dr. Gregg VeneKlasen, the veterinarian trusted by the Beutler family, has provided crucial updates on the situation, as reported by Kendra Santos. Her post this week has been share tens of thousands of times across social media.

Contrary to early reports that the horses were mistakenly fed cattle feed, VeneKlasen clarified to Santos that the horses consumed a horse feed mix contaminated with a lethal amount of monensin, a drug typically used in cattle feed but highly toxic to horses.

The presence of monensin in such high quantities proved fatal, and all the horses that ate the feed have died, they said. The only surviving bucking mare, Black Kat, was spared because she was at VeneKlasen’s Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital in Canyon, Texas, at the time the contaminated feed was delivered.

“‘The only Killer Bee baby that is still alive refused to eat the feed,’” Santos said VeneKlasen told her. “I cried. We all cried. These bloodlines were five generations in the making. Many of the stars of this breeding program are gone. To see what’s happened here to these horses will make you puke.”

This tragedy has left the Beutler family and the broader rodeo community reeling. The loss of these horses, many of which were integral to the Beutlers’ breeding program, represents not just a financial blow but a profound emotional one as well. The rodeo community has rallied around the Beutlers, with other stock contractors offering their horses to help the family through this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, with ODAFF and other authorities working to determine the exact cause and prevent future incidents, the Beutler family has asked for privacy and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss. The rodeo community remains supportive, with many offering assistance and expressing their deep condolences for a family whose way of life has been so deeply impacted.
