HOLIDAY SADDLE EVENT DECEMBER 2017
Barrel Saddles Trail Saddles Roping Ranch Penning Sorting Reining Cutting Working Cowhorse 31
*New record crowd with 13,129 over the two days;
Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Shatters Numerous Records At Lastest Event (SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) Wow. That’s the only way to describe the world’s greatest polo party which took place for the seventh time on November 11th and 12th at WestWorld of Scottsdale.
The records and highlights include: *New record crowd: 13,129 over the two days; *Sold out tents and tickets including the Molina Fine Jewelers VIP Tent, Barrett-Jackson Champagne & Jazz Lounge, Sideline Parking, Premier Sideline Parking and Elite Sideline Parking; *An approximately 70% increase in ticketing and food and beverage revenue from 2016, which had previously been the event’s record year; *Record number of vendors; *Thanks to new sponsor Bottled Blonde, the field-side Bottled Blonde Polo Lounge: Presented by
Polo Player Ashley Busch and NASCAR driver Kurt Busch. with Craig Jackson.
Stella Artois was expanded by 50%. It’s a party tent like none other in the world of polo, hosting drinking, dancing and DJs for one thousand people and often saw lines to get in throughout Saturday; and *New concepts were successfully incubated such as the debut of “Fried & Fizzy,” a pop-up restaurant featuring the unusual culinary combination of fried chicken and champagne. The joint venture between M Culinary and the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships had big sales, so much so that it may lead to an expansion of the concept beyond the event. The weekend also enjoyed several other firsts including performances by the Southwest Shakespeare Company, Phoenix Opera, hip-hop artist Ali Tomineek and Red Bull skydivers. On Saturday 7 DJ’s or bands were playing at the same time throughout the venue and a new fan favorite was created too, World Arm Wrestling Champion Travis Bagent. He took on all comers in one competition, hosted some of Arizona’s best in another and concluded the day arm wrestling a bevy of local and national elected officials, business leaders and celebrities including Daytona 500 Champion Kurt Busch. Overall the event solidified its mark as being the most attended polo event in the United States and best-selling champagne event in the state of Arizona. This year also marked the first time the greatest American polo player of all-time, Mike Azzaro, played at Wells Fargo Private Bank Field at WestWorld. He was part of the winning Barrett-Jackson Aspen Valley Polo Team, along with Melissa Ganzi and Ashley Busch, that captured the event’s signature Molina Cup for the third consecutive year. They defeated the first time visitors, the Monte32 32
Carlo Polo Team sponsored by Bentley Scottdale, 11 to 8. Other exciting matches on Saturday and Sunday also saw Evan’s Furs’ Polo Azteca prevailing in a Saturday match against Northwestern Mutual’s Santa Barbara team 8 to 5. Then Talking Stick Resort & Casino’s Arizona Polo Club defeated Molina Fine Jewelers’ Seattle Polo Club 7 to 3. Saturday concluded with SOHO Scottsdale beating Stick & Ball in the Women’s Sunset Match. On Sunday, the ladies representing Talking Stick Resort & Casino’s team proved to be victorious in the Battle of the Sexes match, honoring the late Sunny Hale, beating Scottsdale Maserati men’s team 6 to 5. The day concluded with Stella Artois’ St. Moritz Polo Team defeating Bentley Scottsdale’s Clogau Wales Polo Team 7 to 6. “Whether it’s the next Phoenix Open as one of our
guests called it this weekend, or ‘the best polo event in the world,’ as the Captain of the Wales Polo Team does, there’s no doubt that this year was a record one for the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships, and the moment that saw the event truly become a spectacle like few others,” The Polo Party’s Co-Founder Jason Rose said. Rose said “it couldn’t have happened without the blue-chip roster of sponsors, partners, and guests that make it all possible. We’re grateful. We’re appreciative. And we’re very fortunate to be in their very good company.” Here is a list of this weekends’ sponsors. In its fourth year as title sponsor Bentley Scottsdale said it’s been a great partnership and platform as the event has grown in size and ambition. “Bentley and polo go together and we see so many of our clients coming here year after year. We also like to show the audience the latest and greatest Bentley models available like the Bentley Bentayga, the fastest SUV on the market that hit this year. The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships is growing every year and is getting better as well. It’s fun for sure and many clients are already asking us to send them invitations for next year’s event,” Bentley Scottsdale General Manager Beli Merdovic said. The event will be returning on the same weekend in 2018 and the goal, according to Rose, “is to become the biggest polo event in the world, one day surpassing the crowds even in Buenos Aires.”

51st Arabian U.S. National Championship
Aurora, Colo. – Nearly 1,800 Arabian and Half-Arabian horses and 7,200 exhibitors, trainers, and support staff made Tulsa Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., their home for two weeks during the Arabian Horse Association’s (AHA) Arabian and Half-Arabian U.S. National Championship Horse Show. National and Reserve National Champions were crowned across a number of diverse disciplines, from hunter and Western pleasure, to trail and reining, to breeding in-hand and driving classes. This event truly showcased the diversity andathleticism of the Arabian and Half-Arabian breeds. Over $600,000 in prize money was awarded across these disciplines through AHA’s Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes and Halter and Performance Futurity/Maturity programs, along with the Arabian English Performance Association (AEPA) and Arabian Western Pleasure Association (AWPA) prize money classes. These programs were created with breeding incentives in mind. Breeders and owners alike can win prize money through competition for eligible horses, by nominating to these individual programs. Designed to incentivize owners and breeders and grow the breed, an additional prize money program will launch classes at the 2018 show through the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Association (AHPA). Support of the Arabian horse community and fundraising is also a large part of U.S. Nationals. A philanthropic sister organization to AHA, The Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund (AHDF), is a 501(c)(3) that provides financial sup-
34
port for AHA members who experience catastrophic, unexpected crisis. Over the years, AHDF has disbursed hundreds of thousands of dollars to horsemen and women in need in the Arabian horse community. U.S. Nationals generally serves as one of their largest fundraisers of the year. The 2017 event, Chips for Charity, was a new concept in 2017, replacing a traditional Wine Walk and a pro-am Western Pleasure class. Several large sponsors stepped up to support the event, including AHA. Monies raised not only supported AHDF and their mission, but also the Warrior Horses project, created by the Arabian horse industry’s own Ryan Melendez. Sponsored signature drink bars representing key stallions in the industry, craps and poker tables, a DJ, and more made the evening a fun break from the seriousness of competition. “It’s amazing that this event happened, out of a new idea to replace the Wine Walk that was already in place,” says Lester Martin, AHA member and exhibitor. “Everyone enjoyed [the Wine Walk]. We hope that Chips for Charity is going to be a fun, new event. We had to have sponsors, and they came to the table, big time. Everyone needs to acknowledge that the Arabian Horse Association came together to help make this event happen and make sure that the new event was as big and as sponsored as we could make it. This is an event that supports anyone and everyone associated with the Arabian Horse Association, and it supports them when they are in their biggest need.” Raising nearly $45,000 in one evening, the Chips for Charity event was inspired by the need to include all members of the Arabian horse community. “Somebody came to us and said they didn’t have $10,000 or $15,000 extra to bid on a horse,” said Chips for Charity event co-organizer, Leslie Sommer. “This is for everybody; whether you have $10 or $10,000, you can come here and have a great time and know that the money is going to benefit the people that we love.” On top of all the fun and competition excitement, the 47th Annual AHA National Youth Judging Contest took place in conjunction with U.S. Nationals, as it does each year. This prestigious contest, known for the $10,000 in scholarship money awarded to contestants, allows youth judging individuals and teams the opportunity to evaluate national-caliber halter and performance Arabian and Half-Arabian horses. Contestants are challenged to learn basic horse judging principles and develop their decision-making, public speaking, and reasoning skills. The contest is composed of two parts: placings through classes the contestants judge and oral reasons. The 2017 contest had 84 contestants, comprising 27 teams. The highpoint individual winner was Bridgett Stanton from the Riley County 4H team. She also won the contest in 2016.

The Future Mrs. Wild Bill
Born on August 26, 1826, Mary Agnes Messmann grew up in Ohio after the six year old left her German homeland with her family. At age 19, Agnes runs off with a circus clown. On May 1, 1846, she and William Lake Thatcher apply for a marriage license in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and get married in or near New Orleans. Thatcher is billed as a “Shakespearean Jester” with the Great Western Circus, among other traveling “mud shows” (so called because the wagons transporting these traveling shows invariably get stuck in the mud since the roads are so bad).

DECEMBER 2017
A Clown of Renown Billed as “Master Thatcher” early in his career, East coast native William Lake Thatcher performs equestrian acts with multiple companies between 1834 and 1840. A bad accident during a dangerous horseback stunt forces him to switch roles and work as a circus clown. He has worked at multiple circuses by 1846, when he meets and marries Mary Agnes Messmann. For the next 20 years, the two travel the country, with Bill becoming “master of the arena” and “director.” The Lakes start their own circus in the spring of 1863, after getting tired of going unpaid whenever a show went out of business. Bill develops a reputation as a solid performer and a steady employer. Lake’s Hippoolympiad and Mammoth Circus is doing so well that Will and Agnes plan to buy a horse farm in Kentucky, right across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio, at the end of the 1869 season. Bill Blake was murdered and killed August 21, 1869.
A Future Circus Queen To draw customers to her husband’s circus, Agnes Lake walks up and down the Big Top on a slack wire. She also pushes a wheelbarrow carrying another performer up the slope and back. Crazy stunts like these are Agnes’s stock in trade. But her main claim to fame is her horse training.

More fun than any history book should be and a must have addition to every Western collection.”
On March 5, 1876, only weeks before his assassination, “Wild Bill” Hickok married Agnes Lake in Cheyenne, Wyoming (re-enacted in the photo, left). After their honeymoon back East, the former lawman met his fate.

Spectacular Setting, Strong
Business Results At Del Mar’s First Breeders’ Cup
DEL MAR, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2017) – Gun Runner’s thrilling victory in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic capped a picture-perfect day at the Del Mar racetrack, the first-time host of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Racing fans responded to the full fields of the world’s fastest horses with their support at the betting windows, as the two-day wagering totals for the event were the strongest in several years. The two-day on-track wagering total of $25,181,317 is the highest for the event, which expanded from one day to two in 2007, and a 21.4% increase over the two-day total of $20,742,847 in 2016. Common-pool handle on Saturday’s 12-race Breeders’ Cup card was $113,803,603, a 6% increase over the $107,210,210 wagered in 2016.
Saturday’s full-card on-track handle of $15,900,813 was the highest since 2006, the last year the Breeders’ Cup Championships were conducted over one day. Common-pool wagering for the two days was $166,077,486 an increase of 5.9% over the 2016 total of $156,861,811. The total handle was the highest since the 2010 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs when there were two additional Breeders’ Cup races. Saturday’s on-track handle was $15,900,813, an increase of 18% over the $13,563,884 wagered on track at Santa Anita last year. The on-track handle at Del Mar for the two days was $25,181,317. “We were treated to world championship performances over two days of the very best in international racing, combined with spectacular weather, smooth operations and excellent customer service from our hosts at Del Mar” Breeders’ Cup President and CEO Craig Fravel said. “Del Mar proved to be an extraordinary venue for our Championships and we want to thank its staff, our volunteers and the greater San Diego community for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality extended to our guests from around the world. We also want to thank racing fans for their enthusiastic support of our event.” “Del Mar, its staff and the community of San Diego absolutely shone for this Breeders’ Cup,” said Joe Harper, president and general manager of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. “I could not be more proud of the effort that was put forth by everyone at our racetrack and all the folks in San Diego who jumped on board for this marvelous event and made it into something spectacular. This was racing at its best; it was Del Mar at its best; and it was San Diego being all it could be. It was a complete winner.” Saturday’s attendance was 37,692. The two-day attendance was 70,420. For the comfort of its guests and because of Del Mar’s smaller capacity, Breeders’ Cup limited ticket sales to 37,500 for each day.

Herb Drinkwater, 61, the Mayor Who Guided Scottsdale's Growth
January, 1997 - Herb Drinkwater, who as Mayor for four terms oversaw Scottsdale's transformation from a sleepy village to a resort destination, died last Sunday. He was 61. The cause was salivary-duct cancer, which was diagnosed last year. Mr. Drinkwater was known for his easy manner and foresight, which helped this Phoenix suburb retain its character as its population grew. He moved here with his family from upstate New York when he was 7, on the advice of doctors. Mr. Drinkwater suffered from asthma and rheumatic fever, and he credited Arizona's climate with saving his life. Mr. Drinkwater was Mayor of Scottsdale from 1980 to 1996. In that time, the suburb's population more than doubled, to more than 179,000 people, and Mr. Drinkwater helped lure the Princess Resort, among others, and the Mayo Clinic, which opened a medical center here. He was known for his efforts to preserve Scottsdale's natural beauty, including pushing for a preserve near the McDowell Mountains and a park system along Indian Bend Wash, a stream bed that runs through much of the city. He also lobbied for less development in the city's growing northern section. The owner of a home-building business and a liquor store, Mr. Drinkwater was elected to the City Council in 1970, after promising voters that he would safeguard the character of their small town.

Handling several challengers from the get-go, Scott Stevens kept Kaabraaj focused on the prize and pulled away in the final sixteenth of a mile for a 2 ¼ length victory over Keller’s Gold with Leadem in Ken third in the field of nine colts and geldings. The favored Shrewd Move tired to finish fifth. Owned by Warlock Stables and Horseplayers Racing Club and trained by Jeff Metz (also trainer of BCZ Middleton), Kaabraaj raced the 6-furlongs in 1:09.25 for his seventh win in 26 efforts. Listo finished third in the field of seven fillies and mares. Owned by Charles Garvey of Alberta, Canada and conditioned by leading trainer Robertino Diodoro, the 3-year-old Fight to Glory, redeeming herself after finishing third to BCZ Middleton in the Princess of Palms Stakes, raced the 6-furlongs in 1:09.70 for her fourth victory in nine starts. Mo Town Rallies to Win Hollywood Derby Mo Town © Benoit Photo
Magnier, Tabor and Smith’s Mo Town, making his West Coast debut, rallied from next-to-last under jockey John Velazquez to win the Grade I $300,000 Hollywood Derby Saturday. Patiently handled by Velazquez after a slightly slow beginning, Mo Town swept by his embattled rivals in the final sixteenth to win by a length in the fast time of 1:46.36 for the nine furlongs on the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course. The previous mark was 1:47.73 set a year ago by Annals of Time. Mo Town, a son of Uncle Mo trained by Anthony Dutrow, was considered a prime prospect for the Kentucky Derby early this year after winning the Remsen Stakes as a two-year-old at Aqueduct. However, he was winless in four starts in 2017 until transferred to the grass at Belmont Park where he defeated older horses handily, by six and one-half lengths, October 12. On the basis of that performance, Mo Town was a solid 2-1 second choice in the Hollywood Derby and returned $6.20, $4.60 and $3.60. Channel Maker nosed out Big Score for second. Mo Town was recording his fourth triumph in nine starts and first money of $180,000 increased the colt’s earnings to $509,600. 52

The $6,035 first-place check gives them a running total for the year of $134,666, out of reach of second-placed Eazee E and Tatum Rice, with two working rounds and a pencil finals remaining. Sweet Reyvenge is a 9-year-old gelding bred by Bobby and Francie Butler by Reys Dual Badger out of Sweet Camille. Middleton rode him to win Mercuria NCHA World Series events at Houston and El Rancho Futurity this year, after winning both Novice NonPro divisions at last year’s NCHA Eastern Nationals. rich history of rodeo competition. This iconic rodeo was ongoing for decades before becoming a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo in 1970. Since, numerous records have been set and broken as cowboys race to the finish line of the regular season in hopes of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. Trevor Brazile set the Stephenville record for most money won in all-around with $6,797 in 2001. Bareback rider Steven Dent’s 91-point ride has been the arena record since 2014. Steer wrestler Bray Armes’ (pictured at left) 2015 record of 3.0 seconds is unlikely to be broken as only two bulldoggers have topped his time across all PRCA rodeos for the 2017 season. Both Damian Padilla and Straws Milan clocked in at 2.9 seconds earlier this season – Padilla in Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Milan in Edmonton, Alberta. Team ropers Luke Brown and Martin Lucero set the Stephenville record in 2011 with their 3.7-second run. Jacobs Crawley made his hometown proud by setting the arena record in 2012 with an 86-point ride. Three cowboys share the Stephenville arena record of 7.3 seconds in tie-down roping. Originally set by Kurt Goulding and Fred Whitfield in 2002, their record-setting time was matched by Tyson Durfey in 2016. Barrel racer Cassie Moseley set the arena record in 2011 with her 14.59-second run. Brazile holds the steer wrestling arena record of 8.6 seconds with his 2008 run. Three bull riders share the arena record of 91 points. Originally set by B.J. Schumacher in 2003, his score was matched by Cory McFadden in 2005 and J.W. Harris in 2008. Stephenville’s record total payout was set in 2016 with $142,540.

Top Dressage Riders
Leave Their Mark on the 2017 US Dressage Finals James Koford
(Lexington, N.C.) and Sherry Koella’s Friesian Sporthorse mare, Adiah HP (Nico x Marije Ant by Anton)
Lexington, Ky. – Every year the nation’s top dressage horse-andrider combinations head east to the picturesque Kentucky Horse Park for the United States Dressage Federation’s (USDF) US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan®. Held November 9 through 12, the 2017 event hosted over 390 entries representing nine USDF regions from 38 states.
Vying for 30 titles, competitors riding horses of various breeds competed in Training Level through Prix St. Georges and Grand Prix Freestyle open and amateur classes. Highlights of the competition included Kristy Truebenbach Lund’s (Wellington, Fla.) win in the Intermediate II Adult Amateur Championship aboard Blue Marlin Farms, Inc.’s 14-yearold Spanish Warmblood gelding Akvavit (Silvester x Onni by Jazz) and the winning performance by Michael Bragdell (Colora, Md.) and Hilltop Farm, Inc.’s nine-year-old Oldenburg stallion Qredit Hilltop (Quaterback x Dream Rubina by Dream of Glory) in the Intermediate II Open Championship. Read more about Lund and Bragdell’s journey to the 2017 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan here. Lehua Custer (North Hollywood, Calif.) and F.J. Ramzes (Juventus x J. Rambiance by Rampal), the seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding she owns with Wendy Sasser, traveled nearly 2,000 miles for just one 66
class. Scoring a 72.991%, Custer and F.J. Ramzes claimed the championship title in the Third Level Open Championship after Custer’s USDF region and friends rallied around the combination, fundraising so they would have the chance to compete. After placing third in the Markel/USEF Young and Developing Horse Grand Prix National Championship in August, James Koford (Lexington, N.C.) and Sherry Koella’s Friesian Sporthorse mare, Adiah HP (Nico x Marije Ant by Anton), left their mark on the US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan, winning the Open Grand Prix Freestyle Championship with a score of 71.133%. Additionally, riders cheered on their fellow competitors from their own regions as they competed for the Third Annual Regions Cup Team Competition title. With a regional team of three athlete/horse combinations representing each USDF region, the winning region held top-scoring eligible athlete/horse combinations from Training/First Level and FEI-level Regional Championship classes, and the highest-scoring eligible adult amateur athlete/horse combination from the Second through Fourth Level Regional Championship. Region 3 was named the champion with a score of 70.425%, while reserve honors went to Region 8 with a 70.314%, and third to Region 9 with 69.939%.

As Congress continues to negotiate a final spending package for FY2018, the horse industry and its allies have an opportunity to assure that lawmakers include H-2B guest worker visa relief in the final bill. Federal lawmakers must address this issue prior to the expiration of the FY2017 appropriations measure, which occurs on December 8. This creates a short window to contact your elected officials in Washington and tell them you need common-sense, guest worker visa flexibility. Please contact your federal lawmakers today! Take action and urge them to support any provision that will provide H-2B visa cap relief within the context of FY2018 appropriations bills.

For years Strictly Diesel has repaired, serviced, and redone the 47-48 RE platform that comes in the Dodge 2500-3500 trucks from 1998.5-2007. As of November we are now offering an overhaul/ rebuilt unit from Strictly Diesel. These will now be done in house under our control and our warranty. We have grown tired of the “well my Nate Brekken neighbor knows a guy” that can overhaul and or rebuild these units, As well as our big aftermarket manufacturers who claim to build a Heavy Duty unit, but come so far from that when it comes to the longevity of the unit. Strictly Diesel recently purchased a 1999 Dodge 2500 to R&D with. This truck had a “recent” overhaul and was the perfect candidate to back up why we have so much troubles with the inexpensive and expensive rebuilds and overhauls. Our teardown and inspection of this unit found serious end play issues on the input shaft, excessive clutch pack clearances on all clutch packs, worn bushings, gasoline light duty planetary assemblies - the list could fill up this page. After sorting things out, we put back in this unit what was supposed to be there, including some 47RE- 48RE goodies, new electronics and a new single disc torque converter. The results are pretty amazing - how a few simple parts, that were omitted, and supposed to be there, make a difference. The shift quality and firmness is much improved, so you can seriously feel the torque the motor puts out now. We are confident that we can help our customers even better now that we are offering these units with complete overhauls. Strictly Diesel is here to help. No matter what the transmission is behind your diesel, we can help improve shift quality, performance, or just keep it maintained for you for the long road ahead. Visit us today at Strictlydiesel.com. give us a call at 623-582-4404, or stop by the shop for all your Diesel transmission needs.

Punch was born November 5, 1928, in Roswell, New Mexico. His father, A.D. Jones, bred and established the Debouillet breed of sheep, and he himself was a lifetime rancher. Punch married Suzanne Norton in 1953, and together they established a breeding dynasty from the Thoroughbred mare Maroon. The filly turned out to be a rewarding wedding present for the couple. She went on to set three track records at Ruidoso and two track records at Albuquerque. This prized filly started the Jones’ in the horse industry, and they bred more than seven generations of broodmares all founded on her. The A. D. Jones Ranch ran “closed herd,” which meant they did not allow any females to leave the ranch. One of the biggest success stories is Rule The Deck, a fourth generation female out of the original filly that went on to win $522,165 on the track. Punch and Suzanne also owned Kuhi Kuhi, a granddaughter of Rule The Deck. Kuhi Kuhi became one of the top racing mares of the time. Punch helped to organize the New Mexico A&M Rodeo Association in 1947, and became a member of the rodeo team, contesting in bareback and bull riding. He later added bulldogging and saddle broncs to his curriculum. Though always interested in the Quarter Horse, or ‘Steeldust,’ as it was then known, it was at Las Cruces he first became interested in racing. Here they had match racing almost every weekend. He acquired a definite set of ideas on conformation. Not liking the extreme bulldog type, which was the fashion then, he wanted a horse with a little more leg, well-set withers that ran well back into the horse’s back, flat bone and a broad flat knee. He would focus on the breeding and administrative route. He served as a director in NMQHA and AQHA, and was a member of both the racing and stud book and registration committees. He was also president of the New Mexico Horse Breeders Association. Punch was honored in 2000 with the first Annual Southwest Cowboy Celebration, which highlighted the A. D. Jones Ranch’s contribution to the culture of the Southwest. He was also inducted in 2004 into the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. Suzanne Jones was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1999. He followed her into the hall in 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne, in 2015.

Trident System Installed to Recover NPK Nutrients from Cow Manure
“Trident’s nutrient recovery process
for dairy manure is now installed at a second location at Prairie’s Edge Dairy Farms,” announced Kerry Doyle, CEO of Trident Processes LLC. “Trident’s new cold manure process makes nutrient recovery viable for thousands more dairymen.” Trident is the leading company in the US for nutrient recovery technology for agriculture with processes that
enable dairy farms to manage their livestock manure more effectively. “Our system turns a liability into assets,” says Doyle. “The concentrated nutrients recovered are ready for precision land application or fertilizer production, and the water sent to the lagoons is clean enough to be irrigated directly through center pivots without clogging.” Prairie’s Edge (formerly Fair
Oaks Farms) is located on I-65 between Chicago and Indianapolis. The farm is known for its leading role in the industry implementing sustainable technologies and its managers continue to pursue and share their vision of sustainable agriculture. This is the second Trident nutrient recovery system installed at Prairie’s Edge Dairy. The first system was installed in April 2015 at Prairie’s Edge’s 14,000-cow site only a few miles away. It was one of the first successfully implemented wastewater treatment systems on a dairy farm in the US.
74
DECEMBER 2017
Carl Ramsey, Operations Manager at Prairie’s Edge Farms, is tasked with managing all the manure for the farm and strongly advocates for advanced nutrient recovery. “Because Trident’s system is fully automated our manure is now much easier to handle and manage. It separates the beneficial parts of manure and converts it all into usable byproducts. When you compare the components of milk and manure, it’s clear that there is a lot of value in the manure too. Trident’s system is allowing us to capitalize on that value, and at the same time reduces our operational costs.” About Trident Processes, LLC. - Trident Processes, LLC. is an integrated resource recovery company offering proprietary technologies for processing wastewater and sludge. Trident’s technologies process and recover valuable components from waste and turn them into valuable commodities for operational and commercial reuse. Trident’s equipment and processes are custom developed with solutions for agriculture, municipal and industrial wastewater applications. In 2016 the EPA recognized Trident for its achievements at the EPA Nutrient Recycling Challenge. Trident has operational locations in Canada and the USA.

Gates and Alex Claim 2017 $100,000 at USEF National Championship
Lexington, Ky. – The 2017 $100,000 USEF U25 Show Jumping National Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday morning at the CP National Horse Show. The $30,000 two round competition served as the final leg of the championship and determined the overall standings. Jennifer Gates and Alex delivered under pressure to clinch the national title. The championship began Thursday with 17-year-old Madison Goetzmann (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Prestigious, her 10-year-old Westphalian gelding, winning the $15,000 faults-converted competition. Gates and Alex won Friday’s $20,000 jump-off competition to move into the lead in the overall standings. In Sunday’s $30,000 two round competition, 18 combinations entered the Alltech Arena for round one. Twenty-oneyear-old Gates (Medina, Wash.) and Evergate Stables LLC’s 13-year-old Westphalian gelding stayed cool and had a clear round to remain on their overall score of zero faults. A new course was set for round two and 11 combinations returned in hopes of a one last shot at a top placing. The new track proved difficult with no combinations going clear. Gates and Alex had some breathing room when their closest competitors, Goetzmann and Prestigious, had a rail down at fence six to finish in the overall standings on six faults. However, the pressure was truly on when Gates and Alex had a rail at fence 5. They needed to keep their composure through the tricky remaining related distances and the triple combination and finish with no more than one time fault to stand atop the podium. Gates and Alex did not disappoint, incurring no more faults in the remainder of their round to finish the championship on four faults. Watch their winning round. “The U25 classes have added a lot of depth to my learning, and I think the riders next to me would agree,” Gates said of the U25 program. “It’s an incredible format. It gives us young riders opportunities to jump really hard tracks and
76
put us under a little bit of pressure in similar formats to World Cups, so it has been a priority of mine to hit as many [U25 classes] as possible. And especially coming here to win is a huge honor and I can’t thank USEF enough for sponsoring such an amazing championship for us.” Gates took over the ride on Alex this summer. He had previously campaigned with Audrey Coulter, and he and Gates are quickly forming a partnership. “He is super sweet, down-to-earth, easygoing, but you can also go fast and have a lot of confidence, so I am really excited about him.” Goetzmann and Prestigious earned the reserve champion title for their determined effort with a final score of six faults. Twentythree-year-old Abigail McArdle (St. Charles, Ill.) was once again the third-place finisher in the championship, Jennifer Gates and Alex, 2017 $100,000 having also placed third in USEF U25 Show Jumping National 2016. This year, she piloted Championship gold medalists Chuck Berry 8, Plain Bay Sales’ 10-year-old Hanoverian (Shawn McMillen Photography) gelding, to the final podium spot by finishing on nine faults. U.S. Show Jumping Youth Chef d’Equipe DiAnn Langer summed up the weekend nicely, saying, “I have three incredible athletes [sitting next to me]. I met all three of them four years ago as young girls, and now you see them as young women who are so fantastic, talented at what they do, courageous, committed, and it has just been an incredible journey to watch their careers. They have all been on a team or in educational programs that we have given to help enhance their experience and I could not be more proud of what they showed us today. A big congratulations to the trainers who have done a fantastic job developing these talented athletes.” U.S. Show Jumping Assistant Chef d’Equipe Anne Kursinski added, “I think the U25 [national championship] is a marvelous invention … it is great to have that level of pressure over the four days. It is the management of the horses, the management of your nerves, and these girls, to see that under pressure is what we look for and what you have to develop. It is great doing it now, then they are going to be ready by the time they are going to the World Cup Finals or the World Equestrian Games.” With the $30,000 two round competition format not requiring a jump-off to determine a winner, six combinations shared the top placing after finishing on four faults: Gates and Alex, Goetzmann and Prestigious, McArdle and Chuck Berry 8, 17-year-old Daisy Farish (Versailles, Ky.) and her nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding Great White, 17-year-old Coco Fath (Fairfield, Conn.) and Hillside Farm LLC’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Huckleberry, and 24-year-old Haley Gassel (Lenoir City, Tenn.) and Westwind Equine Training Center’s 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding Quite Dark 2.

Logan Bird
Logan Bird Soars to Canadian Victory
EDMONTON, Alberta – For the first time since 2008 a Canadian won the highly coveted title of Canadian Tie-down Roping Champion thanks to Logan Bird of Nanton, Alberta.
“It’s a dream come true,” Bird said. “I’m Canadian and I’ve been dreaming of winning the Canadian title since I was a kid.” Just like the PRCA’s world title, winning the Canadian title is a yearlong process with countless miles and many competitions. “I thought I roped good this year and I have a good horse and drew good calves and was able to win a lot throughout the year,” Bird said. Bird was mounted on his well-known American Quarter Horse, TJ. At only 14 years old, TJ has won more than $500,000 with numerous appearances at the CFR and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER with some big names in ProRodeo on his back, Bird said. This was TJ’s fifth time at the CFR and he’s competed at the WNFR twice. Among his many accomplishments, TJ took Shane Hanchey to a CFR victory in 2015 and Ryan Jarrett placed eighth in the average with 94.1 seconds on nine head at the 2016 WNFR. “At first he wasn’t trained to rope, but he had potential and my dad (Manerd Bird) made him into a rope horse and now he does the same thing every time,” Bird said. Bird’s focus is primarily on competing in the Great White North. Having joined the PRCA in January 2014, Bird ranked 54th with $23,042 in 2016, 123rd with $9,716 in 2015 and 166th with $6,277 in 2014 with the PRCA. However, his story north of the border is more successful. “I’ve made the CFR three times, so I hope to make it 20,” Bird said. For PRCA rodeos in 2017, Bird was co-champion at the Broncs and Honky Tonks Springs Rodeo with Morgan Grant in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in April. He also won the Medicine Hat (Alberta) Stampede in July and the North Peace Stampede in Grimshaw, Alberta, in August. Bird took that momentum and went on to win $22,138 at the CFR, making him the Canadian tie-down roping champion for 2017 with $52,045. “I had a really good year and had a good week,” Bird said. “At the end, I knew with my last one, if I tied him down I’d have a good chance at winning it.

Despite its scarcity in a horse’s natural diet of forage, fat has proven to be a useful additive in equine rations for two primary reasons: to bump up energy and to boost coat condition. Fat may be offered in one of three ways, and horsemen often choose the method best suited to their management scheme. Many horsemen prefer stabilized rice bran over vegetable oil because it’s a cleaner supplement to feed.Feed a high-fat concentrate. Feed manufacturers sell high-fat feeds for various classes of horses. In particular, products designed especially for performance and senior horses often contain high levels of fat. Many high-fat feeds have 10 to 12% fat, and occasionally 14% fat is included.
“In these feeds, fat is used as an energy source, just as starch and fermentable fibers such as soy hulls and beet pulp are,” said Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). “A mixture of energy sources fuels performance and weight gain efficiently, allowing for optimal results.” What feedstuffs push up the fat content in these feeds? Namely, feeds manufacturers add vegetable oil and stabilized rice bran, though dried distillers grains, flaxseed, and full-fat soybeans are also used. Augment with oil. Horsemen have been feeding vegetable oils for decades, and for much of that time corn oil was the hands-down favorite. From a nutritional perspective, vegetable oil is 100% fat. As equine nutritionists began to better understand the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and their relationship to omega-6 fatty acids, they recalibrated their recommendations, choosing instead to suggest oils that are more naturally abundant in omega-3s. “Because cereal grains are already high in omega-6 fatty acids, adding more omega-6s through the provision of corn oil skews the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in the entire diet. Other vegetable oils such as soybean oil are richer in omega-3 fatty acids than corn oil, and most feed stores carry these
DECEMBER 2017 1
products. If they are unavailable at the feed store, check the local grocery,” she advised. Most horses readily accept vegetable oil top-dressed on feed. Add oil slowly, first drizzling a small amount onto the feed and mixing thoroughly. Gradually increase the amount given every few days. How much total oil added to a diet depends on the condition of the horse and is limited somewhat by what the horse will tolerate. “Working up to 8 oz (1 cup; 240 mL) each day is a reasonable goal, and some horses will accept twice this amount. Keep in mind that it might not be possible to add much supplemental oil to a feed already high in fat,” Whitehouse commented. EO•3™ is the most potent, effective source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids available. In addition, EO•3 has demonstrated benefits to the cardiovascular system, reproductive performance, and bone development in numerous research studies in a variety of animal species. Learn more. Employ stabilized rice bran. Much like the widespread use of vegetable oil, stabilized rice bran has been a staple feedstuff in the equine industry for many years. Rice bran is naturally high in fat and extremely palatable, which makes it an appropriate energy source for horses. In order for horses to derive the most nutrition from rice bran, it must be stabilized or heat-processed to denature enzymes that eventually cause rancidity in raw rice bran. Once stabilized, though, the product has exceptional value in feeding programs. No consideration should be given to rice bran that has not been stabilized. “Stabilized rice bran contains between 18 and 20% fat, and that can add significant energy to a horse’s ration. For most horses, 1 to 2 lb (0.5 to 1 kg) of stabilized rice bran per day mixed into the feed works well to enhance the energy density of a ration,” said Whitehouse.
Many horsemen prefer stabilized rice bran over vegetable oil because it’s a cleaner supplement to feed. Oils tend to be messy, often requiring regular scrubbing of bins and troughs to wash away unsightly, sticky grime. Because rice bran is usually packaged as a pellet or a meal, it is easily churned into a textured or pelleted feed.

Researchers recently identified a specific type of protein called glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) as a potential therapeutic target for horses with insulin dysregulation. By blocking the action of GIP, equine scientists hope that insulin levels can be better controlled which, in turn, will help control obesity and limit laminitis. In live horses, GIP concentrations circulating in the bloodstream were higher in horses with increased body condition and cresty neck
Managing Insulin Dysregulation and Obesity in Horses: Beyond Diet scores.“Insulin dysregulation refers to various abnormalities in insulin metabolism, including abnormally high circulating levels of insulin and insulin resistance. Due to the continued increase in the number of horses affected by insulin dysregulation and the lack of a cure, GIP offers a glimmer of hope for affected horses,” explained
Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., an equine nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). According to the study*, the GIP protein falls into a category of hormones called incretins. These hormones are produced in the gastrointestinal tract and enhance insulin release following a meal. “In addition to stabilizing blood glucose concentration, GIP promotes the production and survival of the pancreatic β-cells that produce insulin and modulates obesity,” added Whitehouse. The study also found: Horses express incretins in various tissues, such as the pancreas, heart, liver, kidney, and duodenum but was not found in gluteal muscle; Insulin production by pancreas cells in cultures was stimulated by glucose in a concentrationdependent manner; Insulin production by pancreas

cells was decreased after a GIPblocking protein was added to the cell cultures; and In live horses, GIP concentrations circulating in the bloodstream were higher in horses with increased body condition (BCS) and cresty neck scores. “These data show that blocking GIP could ultimately prove to be a valuable treatment option for horses suffering obesity, insulin dysregulation, and metabolic syndrome. Until such products are commercially available, owners are encouraged to maintain their horses at an appropriate BCS to help prevent insulin dysregulation,” Whitehouse explained. If your horse already suffers insulin dysregulation and laminitis is a concern, consider supplementing with KER’s Bio•Bloom PS, a nutritional supplement containing key nutrients for hoof health. “Bio•Bloom PS contains biotin, methionine, iodine, and chelated zinc to improve hoof growth and strength,” reported Whitehouse.

You’ve got kind, hardworking, handy people the country over, who enjoy making solid, dependable ranch horses or bridle horses. Some will start in the snaffle, advance to the hackamore, then to the two-rein, until they’re straight up in a spade bit, and some will take the Californio route, by skipping the snaffle altogether – choosing to start their colts in a bosal instead (there’s a great story about that in the August-September Performance Horse Journal). And there are plenty of people who go from a snaffle or side pull to a curb bit. Pretty much everyone who ranches and works their cattle horseback has roped at one time or another, and they’re very often a handy team roper, a handier ranch roper and, maybe, they’re even good in the show ring. There’s even a handful of people who live on ranches who run barrels, ride broncs and can throw a dang fine houlihan. The things that remain steady, regardless of who you are or where you ranch, are Quarter Horses, great dogs, great friends, quality gear and a lifestyle that’s often imitated but rarely duplicated.

Brazile, who has won a PRCA record 23 world championships, has captured 13 all-around gold buckles, his last coming in 2015. Cooper, meanwhile, is making his first run at winning an all-around title. Brazile and Cooper likely will decide the all-around championship as they are both competing in tie-down roping at this year’s WNFR. Cooper is first in the tie-down roping standings with $190,445. Brazile is sixth in the standings with $101,433. East of the river in Prudente, Brazil. South Dakota, you’ll find that a lot of the farmers that run cattle calve them earlier because they don’t want calving to coincide with planting crops. We choose not to calve until the middle of April so we’re not fighting those potential spring blizzards. There’s a reason why – if you look around in the spring, when the weather is nice, there are babies of multiple species everywhere. It’s because with our “hands-off” approach to calving, they’ve a better chance at survival when there’s sunshine and warmer temperatures, as opposed to below-freezing temps with potential for snow. While it seems as though this would lead to lower weaning weights, it makes more sense for our operation. By avoiding feeding hay or feeding less hay by calving later – made possible because the cow’s needs are at its peak when the grass is at premium nutrition – we are leaving more room for profit. When inputs are factored in, the difference in sale prices have been minimal for any lighter-weight calves. That’s just how we do things on this outfit – in addition to raising and making excellent ranch horses. I love and respect that everyone has their reasons for doing things. 1

Ranching Heritage Breeders must breed and register at least five American Quarter Horse foals each year and must maintain a remuda of horses used on a cattle ranch. The American Quarter Horse Association has had great success with its Ranching Heritage Breeder program and is now recognizing both breeders and owners with more than $7,500 at various events. “The AQHA Ranching Committee wanted to recognize Ranching Heritage-bred horses that excel in competition,” said AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey. “These great athletes epitomize the versatility of the American Quarter Horse and we’re proud to reward their breeders and owners.” The owner of the highest-placing RHB horse at the events listed below will receive $250, along with a specially created ranch horse trophy, and the breeder also will receive $250. A new CT scanner that has been available for less than a year was a virtual game-changer for Nathaniel A. White II, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS, and the hospital faculty and staff at Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center. The scanner is the Pegaso, which is a CT made by Epica Medical Innovations. Dr. White, a professor emeritus of equine surgery at the Virginia Tech, believes there are only two such units in operation in the U.S.—one at his school and one at Colorado State University. “It allows us to see things we can’t see any other way,” White said. “It’s extremely helpful.” CT on horses isn’t new, but the units until now had been designed for human medicine—not too accommodating for capturing images of a horse, he said. The bore on the CT unit is big enough to accommodate a horse’s legs, neck or head, White said, adding, “this allows a lot more of the horse to get scanned.” The unit enables a horse’s head and neck to be scanned with the horse sedated and standing. “It doesn’t take long—just a few minutes to get the scan, which is the other advantage,” White said. “There are horses we can put through the machine, take a scan, and then roll it into surgery to fix whatever gets diagnosed.” The EMC faculty, which has become quite familiar with the machine, have scanned some 70 horses since November 2016, White estimated. The imaging is taken in slices, enabling a more detailed view of a horse’s head, sinuses, teeth or whatever anatomy is being examined. Does it improve diagnoses? “Basically it gives us a threedimensional view so we can know what to do, where to go,” White said. “It helps make an exact diagnosis to know what surgery to do.” Also new for the large animal industry is Biovision’s Veterinary

Endoscopy’s NeedleView 18-gauge micro-arthroscope, which is standard of care for diagnosing lameness of the stifle as well as other joints, said John Small, company president. “Where digital radiography fails, it 100 percent conclusively diagnoses the lameness,” Small said. “It compliments and competes with MRI, CT scan and ultrasounds.” The stifle lameness diagnosis was limited prior to the introduction of the NeedleView micro arthroscope, according to Small. “With the introduction of this technology, the practice can use the scope system to determine the root cause of the lameness and whether or not it can be fixed,” he said. Beside stifle lameness diagnoses, veterinarians also are using the product on other joints, such as carpus, fetlock, hock, coffin joint and navicular bursa, Small said. Josh Zacharias, DVM, MS, Dipl. American College of Veterinary Surgeons – LA, Dipl. American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation – EQ, is an avid user of the scope. “What I like about the needlescope is the ability it gives me to evaluate a synovial structure in a less invasive way than even standard arthroscopy,” said Dr. Zacharias, who practices at Countryside Large Animal Veterinary Services in Greeley, Colo. “In many cases the procedure can be done in a standing, sedated horse.” The most common application in Zacharias’ practice is stifle diagnostics. Horses with a lameness that blocks to a stifle are examined usually via radiographs and ultrasound, and certain lesions can be seen on radiographs but not ultrasound or ultrasound and not radiographs, he said. continued on page 100

Three Chimneys Farm’s Gun Runner ($6.80) went to the front shortly after the break and never trailed as he defeated Collected by 2 ¼ lengths to win the 34th running of the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) for 3-year-olds and up Saturday afternoon to close the first Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar racetrack before a crowd of 37,692. Defending champion and favored Arrogate finished in a dead heat for fifth in his bid to join Tiznow (2000-2001) as the only back-to-back winner of the Classic.

Runner covered the 1 ¼ miles on a fast main track in 2:01.29. Gun Runner is a 4-year-old Kentuckybred son of Candy Ride. It is the sixth Breeders’ Cup victory for Asmussen and second in the Classic, having prevailed 10 years ago at Monmouth Park with Curlin. It is the fourth Breeders’ Cup victory for Geroux and first in the Classic. It was the fifth victory in six starts in 2017 for Gun Runner and fourth Grade 1 triumph. It also avenged his lone defeat to Arrogate, who had prevailed by 2 ¼ lengths in the Dubai World Cup in

March. Gun Runner went to the front at the break and Collected immediately took up the chase. The two raced through early fractions of 22 2/5, 46 1/5 and 1:10 2/5 in their own little duel. Leaving the far turn, Collected made one more run at Gun Runner but was quickly rebuffed as Gun Runner drew away to improve his career mark to 18-11-3-2. West Coast finished another 1 ¼ lengths back in third and was followed in order by War Story, Arrogate and Gunnevera who dead-heated for fifth, Churchill, Mubtaahij, War Decree, Pavel and
Win the Space. Winning trainer Steve Asmussen (Gun Runner) – “It’s a good team and he’s an incredible horse. Incredible horse. Everyone is part of the team and they did a phenomenal job. Scott (Blasi, assistant trainer), Angel (Garcia, exercise rider), Florent (Geroux, jockey), the owners... we did the right things at the right time and all that made it special. What an awesome feeling this is. Florent has the ultimate confidence in Gun Runner and he rode Gun Runner. It’s all part of the process. We had discussed what we’d see (in the race) through the day and I told him to ‘ride Gun Runner.’ I’m the lucky trainer of the Horse of the Year.” Winning jockey Florent Geroux (Gun Runner) – “This (win) means a lot. It’s the biggest win of my career. It’s the big race with Horse of the Year on the line. I’m glad he was the best horse.” Were you surprised you were in front? “No, not really. I think he was the quickest horse in the race from the beginning of the race.” “(Trainer) Steve (Asmussen) was the one who gave me the opportunity to ride this horse. the real deal. We were so confident going into the Kentucky Derby; we really thought it was his best chance ever to win it.” (Collected was pressing Gun Runner) “It wasn’t like my horse was going crazy and would lose his chance. I really like (Collected) and I respect him a lot. He was the horse for the course for sure. He showed it today. He was just second best; my horse was the best horse today.”
Bob Baffert (Second with Collected, third with West Coast, fifth with favorite Arrogate and eight with Mubtaahij) – “My horses ran well. Arrogate...I don’t know. He just can’t find the plate. He’s like a pitcher who can’t find the plate. Gun Runner is a really good horse and he ran a great race. My other horses ran great. I hate to make any excuses for the big horse (Arrogate), but he’s just not the horse he was. He struggles over this track, but when I got him up to Santa Anita, I thought maybe...When he broke, he broke flat-footed and broke in and he weaved in. He lost a lot of momentum there. We were hoping to really send him away from there. I don’t know what happened to him. I don’t know if it’s this track or what. He’s just losing interest and I think that’s what it is. He’s run so many incredible races that I really think he’s just losing interest. That’s what it is. It’s time (for him to retire). “But he has done so much. What he accomplished in a short period of time, the Travers win (in track and stakes record time), beating California Chrome (in the 2016 Classic), winning the Pegasus and the way he won in Dubai. You have to give Gun Runner credit. He laid it down and he took a lot of heat. Collected is a really good horse. We know how good he is. “West Coast ran really well. He’s a horse that wants to be forwardly placed. It looks like they were just marching around there. They just sort of didn’t change positions. They just stayed the same all the way around there.”
Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.
USE NEPROFIN FOR:
Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Why Less is More when it comes to equine dental care
By David W. Ramey, DVM
“… the emphasis placed on making sure that the horse’s mouth is attended to according to some preconceived notion is probably not as important as some people make it out to be”
Over the past three decades, care of the horse’s mouth has apparently become a huge concern. When I graduated from veterinary school, care of the horse’s mouth was the concern of an equine veterinarian and part of our overall job of taking care of the horse. However, now it’s become the subject of a good deal of controversy about who should be taking care of the horse’s teeth, how often, what constitutes “proper” care, etc. From a scientific standpoint, much of what has passed for “routine” horse dental care—filing down sharp points, leveling the chewing surfaces, etc.— has been shown to be largely unimportant. That is, when researchers have looked at the results of routine procedures performed on horses’ teeth, they largely haven’t been able to find any differences in how the horses do before and after the interventions (in feed digestibility or feed particle size, in jaw movement or on test scores in dressage horses). That’s not to say that care of the horse’s teeth isn’t important, it’s just that some of the emphasis placed on making sure that the horse’s mouth is attended to according to some preconceived notion is probably not as important as some people make it out to be. Routine care of the horse’s mouth, of course, is an entirely different kettle of fish from true oral pathology, such as the treatment of diseased or broken teeth. There are certainly serious problems that can occur in the horse’s mouth. True oral pathology is a job for a veterinarian, often one with specialized surgical training. But as for leveling and smoothing of the dental arcades (teeth floating), three distinct possibilities exist: Care can be overdone, there’s neglect, and there’s care that’s just about right.

Unfortunately, while “just right” is the standard that everyone should be shooting for, even if that’s a standard that doesn’t have a real definition. In fact, just right almost undoubtedly varies from horse to horse. But if just right is elusive, attending veterinarians should probably err on the side of caution: “Above all, do no harm.”
Equine Tooth Structure
The hypsodont teeth that horses have are characterized by high crowns that extend high above the gum line and lots of hard enamel that extends down past the gum line. This tooth structure gives the horse extra tooth material so that it can put up with the wear and tear that comes from eating tough, fibrous material like hay (or fences, stall doors, trees or any of the other things that horses insist on eating). Other species with hypsodont teeth include cows, goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas and camels. It’s interesting to consider the fact that as much as people assert that grinding away on a horse’s mouth with alarming regularity is essential for the horse’s health, there seems to be a remarkable lack of attention given to the teeth of cows, goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas or camels, and these species don’t appear to be suffering too much as a result. While one might opine that horses get ridden, and thus should be spared the discomfort of sharp teeth, camels are ridden— and even raced— but camel teeth seem not to have attracted the same level of attention.
What’s Worse? Too Much or Too Little Care?
Horse teeth are designed to tear and shred forage. All of the ridges and points and other structures are there for a reason. While veterinary medicine can’t state why they are there for any definitive reason, it’s likely that they have some importance and that dental interventions to “correct” such structures should be considered with caution. There certainly is a point where dental care can be overdone. continued on page 100

Sharp teeth can certainly be associated with trauma to the insides of the horse’s cheeks; however, teeth that have been ground excessively can cause difficulty for horses in chewing and processing their feed. Less is often more. Given that there are other people— nonveterinarians—who assert that they are “experts” in the care of the horse’s mouth, veterinarians still have an opportunity to stand out by providing good dental care as part of an overall strategy of horse health care. Rather than focusing on regular attention to performing procedures, veterinarians might consider regular oral examinations with attention to the mouth on an as-needed basis (as opposed to a set schedule). Of course, this makes some sense. No one would allot a human dentist to put a filling in a tooth, or an endodontist to do a root canal, without first performing an examination to determine whether there’s really a problem. If, clini-

injuries in the stifle has significantly increased our outcomes of stifle injuries.” He credits the improved outcomes to an earlier and more accurate diagnosis, which typically leads to a more appropriate treatment, and a more realistic prognosis and case selection. “A number of times radiographs and ultrasound were not sensitive enough to give me the confidence to make retirement type of recommendations, however it is really hard to argue with the visual presence of a lesion that the owner can be looking over your shoulder and say ‘Wow, that looks bad,’” Zacharias said. cally, a horse is healthy, one should be circumspect about subjecting him to aggressive dental procedures. In fact, some dentistry specialists (Dipl. ACVD) are now advocating that proper care may even involve only a few teeth (rather than grinding away at the horse’s entire mouth). More care is not necessarily better care. It can be difficult for clients to tell the difference between work done by “specialists”—who may assert that veterinarians lack the knowledge, skill or concern to take care of the horse’s mouth—and that done by veterinarians. In order to differentiate themselves, veterinarians should move past the point where work on the horse’s mouth is done according to some preset schedule and according to some preconceived “ideal.” Rather, veterinarians should focus on providing good client relationships, good care and regular oral examinations to make sure that dental work is only done as needed, and only after a thorough exam. Best practices for managing laminitis
Diagnosis isn’t difficult, but laminitis is a frustrating condition to treat
Recognized for centuries, laminitis is an all-to-frequent, and sometimes devastating, condition affecting the connections between the horse’s hoof wall and the vital structures inside the hoof. Although diagnosis usually isn’t difficult, laminitis remains a frustrating condition to treat. What is laminitis?
Laminitis is a failure of the attachments of the epidermal layers (laminae) of the hoof wall to the dermal laminae attachments of the third phalanx. The laminae suspend the distal phalanx inside the capsule formed by the hoof wall. Although inflammation develops as the condition progresses, inflammation does not appear to be the primary insult. The commonly used term, “founder,” refers to “sinking” of the third phalanx within the hoof capsule. Downward force from the horse on the failing laminar attachments, combined with pull from the deep digital flexor tendon’s connection to the third phalanx, can result in displacement of the bone inside the hoof capsule. Some cases may resolve spontaneously. In more severe cases, pull of the deep flexor tendon may
100
result in “rotation” of the third phalanx, where the toe of the bone moves distally. Loss of sufficient laminar attachments can result in a complete distal displacement of the third phalanx (“sinker”).
What causes laminitis?
Laminitis, is a severe clinical sign from many different diseases, including infectious diarrhea, pleuropneumonia, retained placenta, or endometritis. Carbohydrate overload, used experimentally to create laminitis, is similar to what happens when horses overindulge on green pastures or accidentally engorge themselves with grain. Other causes of laminitis are endocrine related. Insulin resistance/ metabolic syndrome, or pars pituitary intermedia dysfunction (PPID, aka, equine Cushing’s disease), can result in laminitis, although the underlying pathology is quite different from cases related to diet or disease. Laminitis also occurs from mechanical overload to the structures of the affected limb. If a horse bears weight primarily on one limb, (e.g., after fracture repair), the contralateral limb will be forced to carry the additional weight, causing the supporting structures of the limb—including the laminae—to give way. Yet another cause of laminitis is from toxicity, no-
tably from ingestion of black walnut shavings.
What is the best treatment for laminitis?
Currently most treatment efforts are focused on treating the initiating cause, controlling inflammation and pain, trying to restore blood circulation, and making adjustments to the hoof to try to alter hoof mechanics. Attending to the initial insult It’s not always possible to eliminate the underlying cause of laminitis. For example, the underlying cause of PPID, benign enlargement of the pituitary gland, cannot itself be effectively treated. Similarly, if a horse refuses to bear weight on one limb, it is virtually impossible to stop excessive weight bearing on the contralateral limb. Such cases can be very frustrating. In cases where there is a treatable underlying cause, the underlying cause must be treated. Treatments may include dietary modifications, antibiotics, fluid therapy, or a variety of anti-inflammatory medications. Controlling pain and inflammation In acute laminitis, icing the feet is often advocated. Icing may slow down inflammatory processes and may also impede enzymatic processes associated with the deterioration of the laminar attachments. Icing should be prolonged; as long as 72 continuous hours has been advocated. Due to the unique circulatory architecture, prolonged immersion in cold water will not harm the horse’s foot. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a potent industrial solvent with anti-inflammatory activity that has best been demonstrated in vitro, may also be advocated. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are commonly used to relieve pain and inflammation. Alas, NSAIDs may not be very effective in relieving
DECEMBER 2017
pain in more severely affected horses. Other pain-relieving medications that have been tried include gabapentin and fentanyl patches. Unfortunately, no medications are consistently successful in relieving laminitis pain. Restoring blood circulation It has long been thought that laminitis is due to a failure of the digital circulation. Although histopathology casts doubt on that theory, attempts to “improve” digital circulation are common. Acepromazine maleate has been advocated because of its demonstrated ability to cause dilation of small blood vessels, although recent work has cast doubt on its effectiveness. Aspirin has been used as an anticoagulant. Isosxuprine hydrocholoride has been shown to be virtually biologically unavailable to the horse, and would seem to have little use in laminitis treatment. Mechanical adjustments Mechanical adjustments are directed at trying to adjust the hoof capsule in accordance with theoretical concerns, although those concerns may be contradictory. Trimming of the horse’s foot in response to changes seen during laminitis is thought to be a hallmark of successful treatment. A stall filled with deep sand or shavings may allow a horse with laminitis to stand more comfortably. Various pads and boots have also been advocated to try to give the horse’s sore feet a soft place to rest. Raising the heels has been advocated in an attempt to reduce the pull of the deep flexor tendon; however, elevating the hoof also has been shown to increase tension in the laminae of the dorsal hoof wall. Wooden shoes have been advocated to help cushion the foot and allow break over in a direction of the horse’s own choosing. In severe cases, tenotomy of the deep flexor tendon may be suggested in an effort to reduce the pull of the deep flexor tendon.
Laminitis prevention
Laminitis prevention is far more successful than laminitis cure. Appropriate diet and/or pasture management is essential in at-risk horses. Horses should be kept at an appropriate weight so as not to incur the risk of laminitis associated with obesity. When disease is recognized, it should be treated immediately. Unfortunately, laminitis associated with endocrinopathies due to aging may be unavoidable.

New documentary Wait for Your Laugh is the story of Rose Marie and has a “Horsey Connection” Some of you might be surprised to learn the new documentary “Wait For Your Laugh” that chronicles the life of Rose Marie, does have a horsey connection with Rose Marie’s daughter. Georgiana “Noopy” Guy-Rodrigues. Georgiana has been involved with horses since her father gave her her first horse at 11 years of age. He paid $200 for her. Noopy has always loved horses since she can remember. She went on to become a top western rider showing western pleasure, trail, stock horses and reining horses. Her first horse, Chubby became Los Angeles County Horse Show Exhibitors Assn. Western Pleasure Champion when Noopy was 17 years of age. Noopy later learned that Chubby had a story herself in that it was learned that in Chubby’s younger years, she was one of the best bucking horses on the rodeo circuit. As you will see in the documentary, Noopy lost her father when she was 16 years old. She continued to show western horses continuously in-between working as a television producer. When Jason Wise approached her about doing a documentary on her mother, she decided to take a chance on this young filmmaker and give him the go ahead. She is Executive Producer of the documentary. What he turned out was an extraordinary documentary on her mother. The documentary is now premiering around the country, and Noopy and those involved with the documentary, have been doing questions and answers after the premier screenings. Noopy gets asked at almost every screening why she hasn’t had the problems that other children of celebrities have had. She always responds, “its because I have horses” and grew up around horse people. “They keep me grounded as to what’s important. You don’t have time for drugs, or partying all night long. You have to get up and ride and take care of your horses. That’s the priority. Noopy and her Mother, own The Residual Ranch. Noopy’s mother named the ranch because in the beginning, it was supported on Residuals. It no longer is, and again, if you see the documentary, you will understand why. Her mother has had an amazing life and career. Noopy has never left the horse business. She was the first woman president of the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Assn. She is currently First Vice-President and has been on the PCHA Board of Directors for over 35 years. She owns two horses now, and as soon as things calm down with the documentary, she hopes to buy another reining horse and get back in the show ring. She also is Chairperson for the popular PCHA Baker Reining Classic, a job she has done for over 10 years. She has stated emphatically that she will always be involved with horses and the wonderful people connected to them.

Why Equine Acupuncture is Gaining Ground - A look at the research
National Geographic released a minidocumentary, “Treating Animals with Acupuncture,”1 in early 2016. The video highlighted veterinarians learning acupuncture from one of the long-term equine practitioners in the field, Dr. Kevin May, who stated in the interview: “As far as the things we treat most often, [those] are the things that respond the most. So musculoskeletal problems, pain, nerve damage. … Acupuncture stimulates the body to heal itself. [That’s] pretty much it in a nutshell.”
A growing number of veterinary schools offer equine acupuncture in their teaching hospitals, including Colorado State University, the University of Illinois and the University of California, Davis. Illinois assistant professor Kara Lascola, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, in a recent issue of The Horse discussed opportunities for healing that acupuncture brings to her patients. She stated, “I mainly use acupuncture to help manage chronic pain associated with musculoskeletal problems, such as back injuries, although it can also be used in management for other conditions, such as laminitis or neuropathies.”2 Further, she described the improvements she witnessed in an equine patient diagnosed with chronic back pain when acupuncture was added after corticosteroids and shockwave therapy failed to produce sufficient improvement.
Effects of Hippotherapy
In addition to treating horses used for pleasure riding and performance, acupuncture can provide significant benefits for those working in therapeutic riding centers. Horses involved in hippotherapy experience their own
stresses and strains, and they must compensate for the added impact of the non-equestrian rider who may have physical, cognitive or emotional dysfunction. Many of the human participants in hippotherapy sessions have disorders of movement. Over time, these children or adults may show improvements in posture, balance, mobility and sensory processing.3 However, this work can take a toll on the horses. Bearing the weight of an imbalanced and potentially unyielding rider means they have to continually adapt to unevenly distributed forces. Can acupuncture help these horses? A research review from 2012 reported that over 4,000 U.S. veterinarians practice acupuncture.4 The authors found over 10,000 Englishlanguage papers pertaining to acupuncture science and theory, with nearly 300 specifically related to veterinary medicine. They wrote, “Despite the challenges inherent in designing clinical trials for acupuncture (e.g., difficulty blinding a study and standardizing a single treatment for all animals in a group), research supports the use of acupuncture as a safe and effective treatment for many disorders in animals.” Regarding musculoskeletal pain, particularly in performance horses, the authors stated that clinical trials involving electroacupuncture (EA)
“provide clear, scientifically based evidence that three sessions of EA treatment can successfully relieve signs of back pain in horses and the analgesic effect can last two weeks. In contrast, medicating with oral phenylbutazone alone did not effectively
relieve pain.”5
What One Study Found
Since that review, more research has emerged. A 2016 study published in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia compared the effects on lameness of three acupuncture treatments over eight days to no treatment.6 Two board-certified surgeons, blinded as to treatment status, reviewed videotapes of the horses moving. Results showed that acupuncture reduced hip hike differences under all conditions and led to other objective and subjective improvements as well. Of course, not all equine acupuncture studies reveal positive results, just as studies on drugs and surgery are not uniformly positive. This does not mean the treatment itself is invalid, but instead causes us to question whether the methodology is faulty, the numbers are too low7 or if acupuncture is inappropriate for the condition in question.
No Gallbladder in Horses
Another challenge facing equine acupuncture pertains to misleading nomenclature. One paper described the analgesic effects of needling local and distal sites along the lateral aspect of the horse where both bipeds and quadrupeds frequently exhibit myofascial dysfunction.8 In acupuncture parlance, this linear and often tender connective tissue route corresponds to the “gallbladder meridian,” as denoted in humans. However, horses have no gallbladder. Furthermore, while acupuncturists who practice Traditional Chinese medicine have adopted the term “me104
DECEMBER 2017
ridian” to describe the acupuncture pathways, the word “channel” serves as a more accurate translation of the Chinese term “jing-luo,” connoting correspondence to nerves and vessels, not mysterious energy routes.9 By recognizing the neuroanatomic basis of acupuncture, we can take that information—i.e., that acupuncture works through a process known as neuromodulation—and design needling protocols capable of helping normalize nerve function, balance autonomic tone and relax both body and mind. However, extrapolating the human acupuncture point matrix onto the equine form poses several challenges that call for careful anatomic research. First and foremost, the distal limb of the horse differs dramatically in both form and function from the human. As such, several sets of points located on four out of five digits on the human hand and foot have no comparative location in the horse.10 This limits veterinarians’ ability to extrapolate and test comparative locations across species and requires a fresh approach to point location and nomenclature.
Extra Vertebrae
Other challenges posed by anatomical variations involve paraspinal points identified by their vertebral locations. The equine thoracic spine has six more vertebrae than does the human, leading to a curious placement of points seemingly determined by convenience of needling rather than actual neuroanatomic relevance.11 These points that closely parallel the spine exhibit somatovisceral and viscerosomatic relationships to internal organs by dint of crosstalk between somatic and visceral interneurons within the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Precise mapping of autonomic nervous system and internal organ networks in the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord of the horse would greatly improve the reliability of treatment effects associated with acupuncture on the equine back. Moreover, as stated by the author in the article ”One Medicine, One Acupuncture,” “Reconciling inconsistencies [between human and nonhuman acupuncture maps] will bolster the ability for researchers and clinicians to better understand and interpret findings from acupuncture studies on various species so that more can benefit from these insights.”12

“In 1959, John Van Cronkhite created the NFR to showcase the sport of rodeo with the idea of matching the best contestants against the best stock, allowing the contestants to have their complete degree of glory in the arena,” said Davis. “Following this theme has made the National Finals Rodeo the success that it is today. I feel that Boyd Polhamus has the experience, the ability and the determination to continue and enhance this original idea. I look forward to working with him and supporting him in the endeavor to take the NFR to greater heights.” In 2007-09 and 2012, Polhamus’ peers selected him as the PRCA Announcer of the Year. He also received the Lane Frost Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. “To be honest, this is very intimidating,” said Polhamus. “Shawn and his staff have set the bar very high. He has taught me so much and I’m going to use what I’ve learned. The ultimate goal is to make the Wrangler NFR even more fun and engaging for fans, sponsors, and contestants while protecting the integrity of the race for a World Championship. It’s a daunting task, but I’m determined.” …

ITHACA, N.Y. – When traditional treatments for atrial fibrillation (AF) fail, a new procedure offered by cardiologists at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, provides an alternative way to reset the quivering heart of a horse back to its normal heartbeat: transvenous electrical cardioversion (TVEC). “I’m very excited to be able to offer this procedure,” said Dr. Bruce Kornreich, associate director of the Feline Health Center and staff cardiologist. “AF is a very common condition in horses that we’re often asked to diagnose and treat. This is another tool in our toolbox to convert these patients back to a normal heart rhythm.” TVEC, which involves placing electrodes in the heart to reset its rhythm with an electric shock, was offered by the Cornell University Equine Hospital until about five years ago when the hospital could no longer purchase catheters needed for the procedure. Recently, the catheters came back onto the market. At around the same time, Cornell veterinary students examined OnStar, a 19-year-old mare from the Cornell Equine Park teaching herd. “The students picked up the arrhythmia, and we diagnosed it as AF,” says Dr. Gillian Perkins, medical director of the Equine and Nemo Farm Animal Hospitals, who coordinated the procedure. AF is the most common cause of irregular heartbeat in horses, and veterinarians often diagnose the condition in racehorses. AF occurs when the organized electrical signals that normally control heart rate and contraction become disorganized, causing a rapid and erratic heartbeat. Horses can survive for years with AF, but the condition often causes poor performance. Traditionally, veterinarians have treated AF with quinidine, a drug that can reverse irregular heartbeat in about 85 percent of treated horses. The drug has several possible side effects, however, and for horses that don’t respond well to quinidine, or that have had AF for several years, TVEC may be a better treatment option.
TVEC works like the paddles of a defibrillator doctors use on humans, and even makes the horses “jump” from the muscle spasm. But horses’ thick chest muscles and lungs make it impossible to shock the heart from the outside; veterinarians place 3-foot-long catheters tipped with electrodes into the heart via the right jugular vein. “The most difficult part of the procedure for us is to guide the catheter,” said Cornell cardiologist Romain Pariaut. “In horses, it’s a long path to the heart from the outside.” They use a cardiac ultrasound to monitor their progress and perform an X-ray to verify the metal electrodes are sandwiching the right atrium. Finally, they anesthetize the horse, stand back, and apply a timed electric shock to return the heart to a normal rhythm. On-Star’s procedure took approximately four hours and required a veritable village of clinicians: cardiologists, internists, radiologists, anesthesiologists and licensed veterinary technicians. Combined with the expense of the catheters, the initial diagnostic evaluation and hospitalization, the procedure costs $3,500 to $4,000. TVEC carries its own risks, not the least of which are associated with the general anesthesia. With this in mind, Pariaut and Kornreich tried to reduce the amount of time On-Star was under anesthesia through careful attention to electrode placement. With TVEC and quinidine there is also the possibility that horses will spontaneously go back into AF. One recent study found that between one-third and one-half of horses successfully converted from AF to normal heart rhythm will revert after treatment. So far, On-Star is doing well and has had no complications. Funding from the Harry M. Zweig Memorial Fund and the large animal medicine and cardiology sections made TVEC possible for On-Star and for future patients diagnosed with AF.
