Q - Your Look -
The hair…when did that style start? A - Long hair, don’t care. So when you don’t care, the first thing you don’t care about is your hair! So, it gets long. A lot of people ask me if it is real, if it is my hair. Yes, its real and it is my hair, and I have the receipt to prove it.
Q - How to be a Cowboy. When did you
first start with that slogan? A - What I usually say is, “You Ain’t No Cowboy,” rather than How to Be A Cowboy. I teach people how to be a cowboy through my internship program. But, “You Ain’t No Cowboy” is more popular for what Dale Brisby tells people. Dale Brisby has set the rules on what it takes to be a cowboy. That is what gives him the authority to determine who is and who ain’t one.
To me it has been a lot of fun, all the way around. I enjoy making videos, I enjoy making people laugh, I enjoy being in a Rodeo Arena, on the back of a horse. I look forward to every single day, and I do not take a single day for granted. I don’t take a single fan for granted, I don’t take a single view for granted. People have asked me what I would do if it all ended. But, they don’t realize how cheap the cost of living is in Winnebago, Texas!
Q - You’ve used humor to define
your image Were you always funny? A - Yes, Ma’am, I was always the class clown. My Mom always thought I was funny! She always laughed. I loved making teachers laugh. I love making co-workers laugh. Sarcasm, comedy and humor have
Q - After building a large following
Q - How long did it take to get
traction? A - It took about as long as the first video we did on that subject, which was about three and a half minutes. That video went crazy viral! When that video came out in late 2016 or early 2017. That was a hit, but what really put my work on people’s radar was that we have consistently been putting out quality content for eight years. To be honest, it is the content. A lot of people in general try to identify the time this all exploded. Some people will say, “Man you all hit a lick,” or “man you blew up”. Those terms are relative. Essentially what it has been, is a really slow and steady grind for almost a decade that has gotten me to this point. A lot of people have come to watch and follow my content recently, and they may see it is a “recent” explosion, but for me it has been a long and steady, and very enjoyable but long road.
Q - That is inspiration for folks
that may not realize that things may take a lot longer to reach success than they perceive? A - Longer than most bull riders careers. I imaging the average Bull Riders career is six or seven years. You have got some of those that will stick to it a little longer, like someone I mentor that a lot of people may have heard of, J.B. Mauney. J.B. has been at it for 15 years. He has been at it longer than that. He has gone to the PBR World Finals 15 years in a row. Mauney is now about to walk into his first NFR as a 34 year old legend. 28
all. It paid for my lunch, and I came home with $36.00! That is when I knew I really enjoyed sales and I enjoyed hustlin’’. When I got out of High School and went into College, I realized what I wanted to do. I wanted to do something where I could be my own boss, mainly because I wanted the freedom to Rodeo. My Dad was a Cowboy and worked at the Pitchfork Ranch. He was a real Cowboy. He was a mix between John Wayne and Woodrow F. Call. My Grand-Dad was an entrepreneur. He was not the “Wolf of Wall Street,” but he was a hustler. Those two culminated into what I am today, and that is someone who is passionate about Rodeo, passionate about being a Cowboy, but also someone who really enjoys hiring employees.
always been a great way to cope with crappy situations in life, which I have had plenty of. Everybody has, let’s be honest. That is how I made it through 2020, it was Jesus and Memes. Laughter is the best medicine, unless you are treating diarrhea - of course!
Q - As a little kid what did you want
to be when you grew up; a cowboy, comedian, or actor? A - Everything was second to being a Rodeo Cowboy! As a young man I always had entrepreneur tendencies. My Grand-Dad was an entrepreneur, and my Dad was a Cowboy. That was the best combo, I think, for Dale Brisby. I went on a school field trip when I was in elementary school and we did not have a lot of money. I did not have money for lunch. So, I took a bunch of Yo-Yo’s, cause Yo-Yo’s were hot back then, and I sold them DECEMBER 2021
on social media you pivoted into NETFLIX, that is a move no one else has pulled off. Why you, what triggered that event? A - They called me, and that is one thing that is important. Anytime that you receive the call, you have a lot more leverage than when you make the call. I knew that every video that I put out, after a couple of years of putting out content, I realized that I was not as much concerned with how many views the videos got so much as who was watching each video. I was waiting on an opportunity that someone with a production company, someone with a network, someone with a streaming service would see one of those videos. And lo and behold, that is what happened. Video, after video, after video - YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, SnapChat, LinkedIn, Discord, everything, you name it, we are putting it there. Then finally somebody saw it. They made a call, who made another call and then we got the Netflix show. As an entrepreneur, I am always 20/20 looking at the horizon. Like, what am I going to do in a down economy when I have an apparel brand, etc. I thought, “Well a Netflix show, sure won’t hurt the brand.” So, that came to fruition and God really blessed us there. We were all very thankful to take advantage of it.
Q - What tips can you share other folks
trying to score some of the Dale Brisby magic or score a show of their own? A - If someone is coming after the greatest Bull Rider of All Time, what they need to realize is that the best that they will ever be is second behind Dale Brisby. Outside of that,
the things that I do, that I execute on daily, in terms of a Rancher, Cowboy, Rodeo Cowboy and an entrepreneur. There are fundamentals. Just like in Bull Riding, in business there are fundamentals. When you execute those fundamentals daily, over time, if you have persistence and you consistently and give it everything you have. No matter what you do, you have to have work ethic. If you execute those fundamentals over time, eventually you can’t help but be successful. Coming up with a good idea is the easy part. You and I, right now, could sit for 20 minutes and come up with 5 - million dollar ideas. That’s the easy part. It’s the execution that people don’t do. Everybody has a million dollar idea, they just don’t execute on it. With what I do on social media and business, with building a brand, there is nothing special about it. Outside of the fundamentals I am executing on. Now, having talent, is something that comes along with it in terms of business. If you want to be the face of the company, and you want to be on TV, and you want to make people laugh, and that is how you build your brand. Then you need to have talent, but if you do not have that talent, partner with somebody that does. Then you work behind the scenes. It is the exact same when being a cowboy, I have interns come in. I have had 20 to 25 people that worked for me that essentially were working for me to learn a craft. Whether it be Bull Riding, Bronc Riding or just being a Cowboy. One thing I told a young man, he had never been on a horse when he showed up, and he wanted to be a top hand cowboy. I told him #1, unless you are super creative, you might need to consider the fact that if you want to be a ranch hand you are not going to have a lot of money moving forward. If you are OK with that, and you still want to go down this path, what you need to do is wear a lot of leather off of that tree. What that means is that you sit in the saddle so much, that you wear holes in that saddle. And that is how you do it. Like Tiger Woods says in Golf, “Same boring strokes every day.” In terms of my faith, like you mentioned earlier, that is the absolute easiest to get started with. Everything else I talked about, whether it is getting a paycheck, being a World Champion Bull Rider, being an entrepreneur, you do the work first and then you get paid. The thing about being a Christian. In
Christianity it is the opposite, because it is a Gift. When you receive Christ, that is when you receive salvation. Then you work out your salvation after you receive it, because it is a Gift. It is a Gift, it is not a wage. It is actually the most simple thing to do. People over complicate it, but if you love Jesus and you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that He is the Risen Savior, well then you are saved. Then all of a sudden, the rest of your life is just a reflection of that salvation. The cowboy stuff, the business stuff, all that takes the hard work before your successful.
Q - How are you managing your
are alive. As far as my overall attitude. I have a Bible study every night with myself and every morning with myself. So, I try and start and end my day with that. That is where I try and put my hope and foundation. If you spend too much time on the news feed, or on the media, they literally make more money with the most depressing story they can find. So, that is not the best place to find hope. In terms of management, making big decisions, hiring, firing, supply chain issues, money. That is more of a one day at a time thing. I try to make decisions that I wish I had made 5 years from now. When it comes to money, or hiring, or when you consider debt is something you want to do or not do. Like those kind of major decisions, it is all based on what will I wish I had done.
Q - It is like living everyday as a
gift? A - 100%, and being a Christian, once you realize that, “Hey I definitely do not deserve salvation. I don’t deserve to be alive. I do not deserve the gift’s that God has blessed me with everyday”. That puts things into perspective like, “Oh wait, I am undeserving of all of these blessings. Yet, I am going to be grateful”. Then all of a sudden, you go and listen to Yeonmi Park, who escaped from North Korea and you hear what life is like over there. Then you are like, “Oh, wait, as bad as it is here, we still got it pretty good”. I am not saying as far as things that can’t be changed, I am saying that, as far as my attitude. I need to have an attitude of gratitude. That is what helps life day to day.
enriched celebrity? A - In terms of staying positive, one of the main things I try and give myself every day is perspective. I get really good, and this is going to sound morbid, but I get really good at imagining that those closest to me pass away that day. It is a trick that I learned from Gary Vaynerchuk. Essentially, it is a trick that will give you gratitude in the day. If your most closest family member, or best friend, if you were to not have those 2 or 3 people in your life. You realize, wait, I do have them! This does a couple of things. #1 it puts into perspective the little things that go wrong in your day, and #2 it also helps you with those relationships with those people. You are a little bit more forgiving when you are just grateful that they DECEMBER 2021
Q - Who is Gary V? A - Gary Vaynerchuk is a guy I met 6
years ago. He came over from the Soviet Union when he was a couple of years old, so he is an immigrant. He is a social media guru, an entrepreneur, a tycoon. He puts all of his content out there for free. The jokes on him, I would have paid more. He is the real deal. I try and emulate my business decisions after his.
Q - Filming and all that goes with televi-
sion production takes time. How has that effected your day to day life? A - It was pretty chaotic. Filming, it took two months. It was five days on, and two days off. They were Union workers. It was an all day deal. We did not start until about 9:30

in the morning. I could not talk about it on social media, and we had to continue to operate as a business for two months. I was filming a Netflix show, I still had my biggest months revenue wise on YouTube that I ever had. We put out more videos then we ever had. I still continued to post on social media. At the time we had 12 or 14 employees that I was managing. Now we have 18. I was still running all of those companies while we were filming for two full months. I was a Producer on the show and it took us two whole months to film 6, twenty-two minute long episodes. Stress level, through the roof! I did not take a break when it was done, we just kept on moving. We just kept going and we have not stopped since. It was crazy, but I enjoyed it. Again, my family, we were not stupid poor, there were definitely people that had it worse than we did when we were kids. Like Leroy, and Dancey and I, my two siblings who are in the show. We were fine, but looking back, we were not high class. We weren’t at the top, we didn’t have that much. Anyways, I have had points in my life, where I can look back and give myself perspective, so it is easy for me to push through stuff. Like filming a Netflix show was nothing. I have worked a graveyard shift at a feed-lot before. It’s 3am in the morning, you are 15 years old, processing cattle in a feed-lot. Thats sucks. Filming a Netflix show, talk about First World problems, go cry to someone else. Q - You have a team of people around you that are the real deal. How are they handling their new celebrity status? A - Yes, they all really work for me. There
30
are some parts on the show that are obviously just for fun. Like the very first opening scene. There are like 5 different camera angles, we are trotting thru the pasture where we take a call from my Mom. Like that, that was obviously for fun, it was scripted. But, the rest of it is real. Donnie is getting on real broncs. Those are real buck-offs. Leroy actually works for
and sarcasm, but we would do this without cameras.
Q - The characters on “How to be A
Cowboy” were so strong, almost seem like they were chosen just for the show? A - No, not at all. Cheech is a sales rep, so he is contract labor. He is outside sales and he does not live here, but he spends a lot of time here. We work together and he brings in outside sales and I pay him money for that job. Leroy, he films for me, 3 videos a week. So, he is contract labor also. I write him a check every week. The others are actually employees and they get a salary. Like Donnie and Jordan. What we do is a real thing. All of these people are people I am invested with. Cheech, he hangs around. He lives, eats and sleeps in his trailer. Those are real scenarios. Like, how we met that intern, that’s how we meet all of them. They roll up, cameras rolling, we put them on a bull. It is irresponsible, but we have a good time.
Q - What are your plans for the NFR this me. We go to actual Rodeos. That explosion, we had no idea it was going to be that big! Otherwise it would have been on camera. If you watch the camera angles, it blows out of the camera angle. We were not even set up for it. Carl Wayne getting out, Cheech breaking his finger, it was a real filming, That’s our life. There are some subtleties in our content on Netflix where there are mysterious things that we say, do and act. To be honest they are not really that mysterious, but at the end of the day, this is who we are. This what we do every day. I think that is what people can see in our work and filming. The way we commentate it is humorous and thru comedy
DECEMBER 2021
year? A - I have 3 booths this year at the NFR. One is at Cowboy Christmas, one at Mandalay Bay and also a third at South Point. I am doing the pre-show at the NFR at the Thomas & Mack Arena, right outside in the Fan Zone with the PRCA and then the after party at the Mirage - I will be doing both every day at this years NFR in Las Vegas. I will be at Cowboy Christmas for 7 or 8 of the 10 day event as well. Every morning I will be doing Pod-Casts as well in my room with some of the contestants.
Q - Dale, you have been doing a lot of
work lately with J.B Mauney the “2nd Most Famous Bull Rider” ever, can you tell us what you have been up to?
A - There ya go - J.B. and I are just good
friends. We have been friends for 6 years now. We have a lot in common. Now we have some Rodeo cows together, we have JBDB Bucking Bulls, which is a real thing. I have some of his bulls here and he has some of my bulls there. J.B is a bull man, so he actually has a lot of little partnerships. He will partner here and there with some of his buddies and he has several bulls of his own. He is just a bull guy, he has pens at his house in Stephenville and he is always going to have stock around. I think I am the only one that he has Rodeo cows with, and we actually raise them. He does a lot of trading. He will buy a 3 year old and sell him two months later. I don’t care for production, I do not want to actually put on Rodeos, I don’t want to raise stock, except for when J.B. called me. I thought man, if I am ever going to partner with somebody on anything Rodeo production wise, it is going to be J.B. Mauney because he knows what he is doing!
Q - You and JB are doing a lot of fun
stuff together right now online with content too, tell us about it! A - Right now that is the most all-around positive stuff that we do together. He asked me a couple of years ago to take over his merch. When I do a YouTube video, every quarter I will look back, and if he is in the YouTube video, we split the revenue 50/50 right down the middle. Like if his name is in it, his face is in it, etc. So, that is something we are doing and the merch. I handle the merch for him too.
Q - The Merchandise that you sell is
very creative with the fabric designs and the slogans so innovative - how do you come up with all of the designs? A - Some of them I come up with on my own, and some are from the 3 independent graphic designers I work with. I will reach out to them about once a year and then we have an in-house girl that does a really good job. Essentially we work with about 5 different people and when we rotate thru like that, it keeps everything fresh. Some designers will get kinda pigeon-holed into using one specific font more than others to often. We have a couple that we like to lean on so we can change it up. But, essentially it all revolves around the content that we put out. That’s where these shirts are sold. Long before the words are on a T-Shirt. Ya know like, “Your Moms Favorite Bull Rider,” “Ole Son,” “Rodeo Time,” and “Ridin’ Bulls - Punchin’ Fools”. They all mean something to people before they even see them on a shirt. That
is all part of the branding strategy that we go by here.
Q - How long have you been working
with J.B.? A - Six years ago we met at the Iron Cowboy at the AT&T Stadium. We were back behind the chutes hanging out and kinda bull crappin,’ and got each others SnapChats, and then were just sending each other funny SnapChats. That is really all it was. Then one day PBR called and they had just come out with Ride Pass and they wanted us to do a show called “Keeping’ it 90” which was one of my slogans at the time. We did 6 episodes together and he does not like doing stuff like that, but at the time he was willing to do it because I was involved. He knew we would have a good time. We share a good friend in common, Randy Quartieri and he was there, so it was fun time to get to film it. That was our first big project together. It has been all downhill since then, and we just kind of now done more and more stuff together.
Q - You and J.B. have a lot of chemistry
when working together is it real? A - I am going to give credit for that to J. B., he is a real dude. He is what you see is what you get. He treats everybody the same, he doesn’t show favoritism. It doesn’t
matter if its Brad Pitt, Donald Trump, Trevor Brazile or some 14 year old steer rider comes in, he is going to treat them the exact same. That’s just J.B., it always has been. That is the kind of respect he expects in return and I give him that respect and that is why I think we have always gotten along really well. When you get into the culture, the Rodeo culture, you will find some people similar to J.B. Like Tuff Hedeman is one and Jim Sharp. Those guys are all actually really good friends and they get along really well. That is part of the reason why, they are very similar in that they are all “No Bull Crap”. Its like this who they are. Tuff, he is going to treat everybody the same. You will find that in the guys that are “Old School”. That is what they call J.B. he is Old School. He is the way he chooses to live. Its like they plucked one of the early 90’s Bull Riders out and threw him into the next generation.
Q - The VICE show
about J.B., did it open the door for Cowboy in the mainstream to be cool again? The Yellowstone TV show, a Netflix TV Show, Dale Brisby? A - The VICE show came out in 2018, and I am not sure that that show could be responsible for all of that. But, it was a big deal, and there were many things that came from it. Like on that show J.B. showed everyone how he would stand on a medicine ball to work out. It was pretty much one of the only workouts he would do besides getting on practice bulls, he would stand on a medicine ball. Now a lot of kids stand on a medicine ball because of that video. But, the brand that J.B. has, he has been building for 15 years. Yes, it is something that Social Media and TV have helped grow that, because of the PBR is being televised and the YouTube videos, plus a little bit of Dale Brisby, but it is all because of what J.B. has done and built. He is a huge inspiration to young kids that want to be stand out Bull Riders. I think this is something that has been coming thru the last few years and with the advent of social media and what not, essentially all of these people that didn’t realize that we existed, now have a microscope into our world of being a Cowboy.

show came from mainstreams interest in this industry. That is why I have had the success that I have had, because I am one of the few people in this industry that puts out consistent content. There are a lot of people that put stuff out occasionally. Fallon Taylor is really good, she puts stuff out all the time. But, there are not a lot of people that are on a horse talking about “This is how you get
They are starting to see, “Oh snap, J.B. Mauney is a big deal,” “Dale Brisby is a big deal,” Trevor Brazile is a “big deal”. Yes, I put my name in between those two! But, the point is, the Internet as a whole, is a new way for the Cowboy to come thru to the World, but J.B., he is just been himself for so long, he has built that brand.
started,” or just putting out consistent content. The World is hungry for it, and Netflix was too! Right now, all of these networks are looking for a hit cowboy show. Netflix was not the only one interested in taking on this show. The point is, there is a wave. I see the future, and if we can manage our side of it correctly - the future of this industry is bright!
Q - Over the last 6 years, the interest
and respect for the Cowboy lifestyle has blossomedA - That is where the idea for the show came from. The production company was like, “Hey, what are we going to make a show about?”, we know that you have all of this content, and you’ve got the YouTube show Rodeo Time, but we need this show to be different. I said, we literally get 50 messages A DAY, from people who say, “How do I get started Ranching?” — “How do I get started Rodeoing?” - “How do I get started Riding Bulls?”. I had made videos on the subjects, “This is how you get started Ranchin,” “Five ways to get started Ranchin,” “Three things NOT to do when you get started Ranchin” I had made those videos. So I said, what we need to do, is have a show and then we bring on guests to each episode. I said, like Trevor Brazile, like Craig Cameron, like J.B. Mauney. I wanted to call it “You Ain’t No Cowboy,” but they decided to call it “How to be A Cowboy”. It worked out. We brought on J.B., we brough on Trevor and Craig and we added some humor to it. The plot of the 32
Q - Agreed, there is a wave of popularity right now-
A - Yes, like Yellowstone. Yellowstone is
similar to How to be a Cowboy in that, they are both depictions of the Cowboy lifestyle and they both have a storyline that offered entertainment as you learned about it. Those are the two big similarities that we both have. We do it in a form of comedy in an unscripted platform, and they are doing it obviously scripted with more drama, but they are both bringing entertainment (How to be A Cowboy on a smaller scale than Yellowstone). But we are all trying to make a positive impact, as positive splash for the industry. We are the ambassadors for the industry.
The last thing I have to say is check out “How to be A Cowboy” on Netflix, and check out DaleBrisby.com for all the merch. for J.B. Mauney and myself. DECEMBER 2021
JB MAUNEY
The 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is upon us with 21 cowboys and cowgirls making their debuts at the Thomas & Mack Center this December. JB Mauney has risen to No. 5 in the PRCA bull riding standings following an impressive Summer run, “I knew I just had to go back to having fun, and, hell, I started going to these and I started having fun again,” Mauney said. “Before I got to the PBR, I rodeoed and when I was in High School I did multiple events. I was always used to going to rodeos and it kind of changed and I went to the PBR. It has been fun to get back to go up there and watch the bareback riding, the bronc riding, the ropings and stuff, and get to ride bulls.” Mauney made it a goal this year to finally pursue the NFR with every ounce of effort possible following 15 consecutive trips to the PBR World Finals DECEMBER 2021

COLE PATTERSON CAPS RECORD-SETTING SEASON WITH FIRST CAREER GOLD BUCKLE BY TRACY RENCK, PSN EDITOR
Cole Patterson left no doubt who the best steer roper is in the PRCA in 2021. Patterson, who came into the National Finals Steer Roping with a $39,415 lead in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, was never threatened as he cruised to his first career gold buckle at the Kansas Star Arena.
"The hardest one to get is the first gold buckle and to get it this early is big," said Patterson, 26. "I have a ton of family here and I will be talking to them all night. This has been a long time coming. A lot of work has gone into this. I want to try and reflect on everything. To think just four years ago I was learning how to do this." Patterson won Round 3 and Round 8, as well as placed in eight other rounds to earn an NFSR-record $85,726. He finished atop the world standings with $190,242, a single-season steer roping earnings mark. Patterson's NFSR earnings broke the mark of $70,651 set by Cody Lee in 2016. Patterson also won the average with a 97.7-second time on nine head to collect $27,347. Scott Snedecor took second place in the world standings with $95,951 – $94,291 behind Patterson. Patterson earned $104,516 in the regular season, which ended Sept. 30, which set the steer roping regular season record. And he kept cashing checks at the Kansas Star. Cole broke the single-season steer roping earnings record of $142,350 set by his father Rocky in 2016. Rocky finished 10th in the world standings with $63,029. Cole joins his father as a steer roping world champion. Rocky won championships in 2009-10, 2012 and 2016. The Pattersons are the third father and son to win steer roping world titles. They join John McEntire (1934) and Clark McEntire (1956-57, 1961) and Charles Good (1975) and Gary Good (1979). "Anytime I get to rope with my dad no matter if it is in Mulvane or some little bitty rodeo in the middle of nowhere, I try not to take it for granted because I know one day it will not be there," Cole said. "He's one of the best to ever do it and he taught me everything. I couldn't ask for a better teacher, a better dad. He's helped me every step of the way." Rocky was thrilled to have his son reach the top of the PRCA summit like he has. "Watching Cole win a gold buckle is something else," he said. "It is pretty special to get to compete with him and then get to watch him put on a dominating performance like he did here was great to see. You can teach anybody to do this, but they have to be willing to bang their head against the wall every day to work at if they want
36
to rope like he did here (at the NFSR)." Cole placed second in Round 1 (10.3 seconds); fourth in Round 2 (12.2); and then won Round 3 (9.5). He followed that up with second-place finishes in Round 4 (11.2) and Round 5 (9.9). On Saturday, Cole failed to place in Round 6 and rebounded to take fourth in Round 7 (11.6). Then, he clocked 9.9 seconds to win Round 8. In Round 9, he took third at 11.2 seconds. The only drama left for Cole in Round 10 was to see if he could set the NFSR 10-head average record held by Trevor Brazile at 111.3 seconds and established in 2015. Cole needed a 13.5-second run, and he came up short with a no time. "Missing that last one is probably going to keep me up a few nights, but I think I did pretty well here," Cole said. "That just shows how good Trevor Brazile is." Cole still won the average and he and Rocky became the fifth father and son to accomplish that feat in steer roping joining the company of Jim Snively (1959) and Joe Snively (1961, 1972); James Allen (1971) and Guy Allen (1989, 1991, 1997, 2000, 2004); Charles Good (1976) and Gary Good (1979); and Jim Davis (1988) and Bryce Davis (2009). Cole was riding Tigger, 16, the 2021 Nutrena Steer Roping Horse of the Year presented by AQHA at the Kansas Star. "A lot of what I have been able to do comes back to this horse," Cole said. "I feel like I have an unfair advantage when I saddle this horse in the morning. That's not a knock on anybody else's horse. There were so many good horses that were in this building this weekend, but this horse right here has something special about him." Thomas Smith won an event-best three rounds. He won Round 1 with a 10.0-second time and then tied the Round 4 NFSR record with a 9.0-second winning time. Snedecor set the Round 4 record in 2020. Smith added the Round 6 win with a 10.3 run. He earned $32,807 at the NFSR. Chet Herren ($44,705), who was second in the average, and Jess Tierney ($43,779) won the second and third most money at the 2021 NFSR. Slade Wood won Round 2 with an 11.7-second time to win the Colby Goodwin Award. The Second Go-Round Award is given in honor of the late Goodwin, who passed away after being injured during the ninth round of 1999 NFSR. Wood, who finished sixth in the world standings with $82,307 also won the Dixon McGowan Award, given to the highest-ranked first-time qualifier to the NFSR. The award memorializes McGowan, who died at age 23 in an automobile accident May 10, 1997. Wood also was the Resistol All-Around and Steer Roping Rookie of the Year.

RICO AUSTIN - INTERVIEW Q - Rico, you are a man of
many passions-an awardwinning Author, hold a PHD, travel non-stop and now a new business venture. How do you do it all?
A - Answer – Yes, I do like to
keep moss from gathering on my boots. Well, the short answer is I’m a Gemini, born on the 4th of June which is ultimately the center of the Gemini chart and, no I’m not one of those star / galaxy guys who reads his horoscope every morning before shaving. I’m not even sure what my birthstone is??? Something blue or white, clear or turquoise maybe? Now for the long, windy answer: as a child my world was pretty limited growing up in the small town of Marsing, Idaho along the banks of the Snake River. I was the oldest of five boys and my Dad wasn’t around much, and then he unfortunately died at a very young age, so my mother pretty much raised us by herself. In order to pay the trailer house rent, the propane, put food on the table, all of us boys started working at an early age – milking cows, mowing lawns, feeding cattle, selling greeting cards, flower and garden seeds, shining shoes, sorting pop bottles, stocking shelves late at night, detasseling corn, changing sprinkler pipes, rolling bales of hay, picking up rocks out of fields, sacking groceries, picking fruit in the orchards – basically anything we could do, we did it. If anyone needed anything done, they would hire one of the Austin boys. So, all I wanted to do when I grew up was to see the world, get a college education, someday own a company or land and move to a warm state where in the winter I wouldn’t have to slip on ice and land on my ass and most of all, to make my mother proud of her eldest son. After my mother met a good man and remarried, I enrolled in college. I have been blessed to have earned my first degree at the age of 26 – an associate degree in Sales and Marketing from Boise State University and of getting 46
to play one year on the Boise State Football team as a walk-on player, a year before the famous Blue Turf of which there is a full chapter on that subject in my bestselling novel, MY BAD TEQUILA about a Spring Break Trip gone bad that spans for 50 years of poor decisions. I continued my education over the years including earning an MBA from Thunderbird, American Graduate School of
Rico with his first book and New
BAJARRIBA Tequila International Business and YES, finally a PhD in Tequila! Yes, that is a real thing of which less than 800 people in the world have. My motto, “I wasn’t drinking, I was studying,” when I’m asked about how much tequila I drank to get that degree. So, in finale, the answer is that I want to experience life to the fullest and feel thankful and blessed, and I thank GOD for this crooked road that led to one of the most incredible adventures I could not have imagined.
Q - What started you on the book journey?
A - As a child I’ve always loved
to read. The books I read took me too far away lands and introduced me to people I had never heard about and worlds I had never dreamed about. I liked to write and to take photographs, but it was always a hobby as I was
told by my mother that it would never pay the bills when once in a great while I might mention my dream of becoming a writer or a photographer. I was able to satisfy my writing and photography hunger by being elected the 4-H Reporter of the Eager Beavers and serving as the Reporter all three years in FFA (Future Farmers of America). Then many years later in 1996 while attending graduate school I was frustrated by the horrible method of how enrollment was being done and wrote an article about it in the school newspaper – Das Tor and it was put on the front page. The editor asked me if I wanted to write for the paper and I told him I already had two jobs, but he convinced me that I could write as little or as much as I wanted and would get paid by the article of which I could choose – voila, thus began my love again for writing and late one night after drinking mucho tequila on December 18th, 2007, I saddled up and began writing my first novel MY BAD TEQUILA of which a memorable Spring Break in 1986 occurred. My one and only Spring Break Trip for a cost of $200 included the bus trip from Boise, Idaho to San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. It was the first time I’d ever come through Arizona and seen a live cactus and fell in love with the beauty of the desert.
Q - You have published a
wide-variety of books-How does someone go about publishing a book with today’s technologies?
A - Yes, I have several genres
of books I’ve written and luckily in today’s world many writers have the opportunity to self-publish their books or to find small publishers who for a fee will do the work for the new author.
DECEMBER 2021
Years ago, writers were at the mercy of the big publishers and if the person reading the manuscript did not find it interesting or entertaining then the manuscript was never heard of or printed. It was a lousy system that only a handful of persons controlled what was published and again everything favors the publisher, so it is extremely rare for anyone to make the big bucks or get the million-dollar contract such as my fellow author friend Diana Gabaldon – wrote the Outlander Series which was picked up by SHOWTIME. So proud of her and her art of writing.
Q - How do you decide when you have an idea worthy of a book?
A - I believe if I find something
interesting and present it in a well written form that others too will find the same thing worthy of their interest. There are so many ideas I have for books, just don’t have the time with my full-time Sales Manager position covering the 13 Western states and El Paso, TX. I do try to write at least every other night or third night when on the road in my hotel room, it does help keep me out of the honky-tonks every other night.
Q - You’ve had a few folks look
to option your work to create a screen play for the movies. How does that work?
A - In the film industry, an option
is a contractual agreement pertaining to film rights between a potential film producer (such as a production company, a movie studio, or an individual) and the author of the material such as a book or screen play for an exclusive, but temporary, right to purchase the screenplay, given the film producer lives up to the terms of the contract for a specified time frame, let’s say two years and if nothing moves forward then author / writer keeps the option money, usually a few thousand dollars and her / his work is now free to seek other alternatives or another option. I have written a couple of screen plays from my books as

Q - Tell us about your newest book-
A - It is titled BOY to Successful
MAN, a Roadmap for Teens & Young Adults and was just published this last June 2021. I began writing this project late 2011, nearly 10 years of writing, rewriting, adding chapters, etcetera. It was quite different writing for me as this was not a fun write, but one that I felt like I needed / obligated to pen as a pay-it-forward sort of contrivance because I’ve been blessed as a human being and man to be living such a grand, beautiful life with many great friends and family. Growing up I always wondered why I was born into a poor family. I didn’t envy my friends, just puzzled and wanted always to better myself. This book was written to help anyone who feels misunderstood, for anyone who feels angry, for anyone who feels lost – this book is for you. There is no shame in feeling trapped or confused by the expectations for you to grow from a boy into a man. This book is a tool to give young men great lives, no matter their circumstances. For instance, the chapters consist of everything from Chapter One Accepting Responsibility; Chapter Four - Common Sense; Chapter Eight - Manners; Chapter Eleven – Education; Chapter Fourteen – Bathroom Etiquette; Chapter Twenty-Two – Get Involved and Volunteer; Chapter TwentyFour – Attitude and Gratitude; Chapter Twenty-Five – Proverbs Remembered and Restored. Basically, this book is everything I wished that I had been told while growing up, some of it I was taught, some I was not. “A grand life is when you assume nothing, take responsibility, do more, need less, dream large, laugh often and realize how blessed YOU are!” – Rico Austin

awards as an Author. What is your secret? what interests me, and I do my absolute best to offer the best novel, book, short story there is. I want my readers to feel that they chose the right book to read after finishing one of my stories. I am proud of the writing awards I’ve won, including being chosen in 2016 as “one of the top 50 great writers you should be reading,” but what brings me the greatest reward if when I read a 5 Star Review about one of my books or someone comes up to me at a book signing or at a restaurant and tells me that my book or story was one of the best they’ve ever read. Now that warms a writer’s heart. If you don’t mind, I’d love to offer this excerpt from a short story I did several years ago since this is a horse magazine and it fits the narrative: “I have always longed to live in a time and place where if you had a quick gun and an even faster horse, your chances of surviving the hot, desert climate, renegades and outlaws were greatly increased. I am living that dream: where cowgirls, horses, saloons, cacti and tequila abound. When my time on Earth is no more, I want to be buried in my boots, six feet under, covered with Arizona soil that is warm to the touch.”
Q - A new project you have
been working on is a boutique brand of Tequila. Please tell us a bit about this new project.
A - YES, so pleased you asked
about this as I am over-the-top intoxicated (pun intended) about our new BAJARRIBA Tequila which translates loosely to Bottoms Up! Our three founding partners, Jay Nance, Michael Hill and I – Tres Cabo Amigos are extremely excited to share our love for Baja in a bottle which has a unique design of the shape of the Baja upside down, so when pouring or drinking out of the bottle, the tequila is coming out of the southern-most tip – Cabo. This tequila represents many good times amongst three friends who have Cabo San Lucas,
México in common and a passion for some of the most exquisite tequila available in the world. If the term “Caboholic” resonates with you, then you too will understand what it is like to bounce around on the Baja roads visiting some of the most popular beach locations designated on our front label. Whether you are a cowboy, fisherman, farmer, an off-road racer, a traveler of dirt roads, a sailor, surfer, or just a fan of great tequila, we welcome you to share the exceptional taste of BAJARRIBA Tequila! Since our inception we have taken on two other minor partners (no, not that kind of minor, they are both over age of 21) – Mr. Jim Riley, a former Baja 1000 winning racer and he had his own tequila line in the past. The other newest partner is a Cave Creek, Arizona local celebrity and former All-Star Basketball Player – Mr. Tom Chambers who had his number retired with the Phoenix Suns. We are planning and hoping to launch in Cabo San Lucas on Saturday, February 5th through the 12th at various venues. Then again, we will introduce it locally, here in the Phoenix / Scottsdale / Cave Creek areas in March and April 2022. You are all kindly invited to attend.
There is only one you, perfect yourself because everyone else is taken. Secondly, I would advise that self-promotion should not be uncomfortable. Don’t push your product or service. Use it as a tool to help others while smiling and having fun. Thirdly, value matters most, not how many years you’ve been in the industry. One of the worst things a person can do when selfpromoting is to tell about all the past experience and years they’ve been in the biz. Self-promotion is about value not experience. And these last two tips of which I absolutely live by, (1) is to be excited about your product, your service, your art. If you’re not excited about it, how can you expect others to share in the excitement. (2) Do not take yourself too seriously and give your ego a rest. Have fun with your interactions, not only sharing serious articles, but also fun, entertaining stories and photographs. No one wants to purchase a boring butler’s artwork or book. Make fun of yourself once in a while. Heck, I make fun of myself and post some of the most unflattering photos of moi. It tends to make you more approachable and likable.
Q - Deploying social media is
Q - Where can one find out
harder than it looks. What tips can you offer folks trying to promote themselves online?
A - Social-Media is an incredible
tool for authors, artists, real estate agents as well as businesses and non-profit organizations if used correctly. I actually wrote a couple of personal how-to marketing books about this very subject – Author, Artist & Anyone’s Personal Marketing Guide, Financial Success with 11 Proven Promotions including Blogs and Social-Media, the other book is tailored more toward Entrepreneurs and Realtors. I believe one of the most important things to remember is to be yourself. Don’t try to be that gal or guy that you believe everyone tries to emulate. Be true to yourself and don’t be fake.

There are a handful of true roping hotspots that have developed over the years for a multitude of reasons: Arizona in the wintertime, Reno for a week in June, the Lazy E in Guthrie, Vegas in December during the Finale, and of course, Fort Worth, Texas at any given time throughout the year. Due to the climate and availability of good cattle coupled with the concentration of team ropers which then leads to more and more great events, it is pretty easy to see why Fort Worth

Cinch National Finals of Team Roping Heads Back to Cowtown
and the surrounding areas are hot spots for team ropers, not to mention competitive equine enthusiasts as a whole. For years, USTRC ropers looked forward to an annual trip every October that landed them a few hours north of Fort Worth, in Oklahoma City. OKC was the home of the Cinch National Finals of Team Roping until the recent move, two years ago, to a new
home a the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. The dates changed, the venue moved south a few hours, and the ropers were loud and clear on their opinion of the move! For two years in a row, 2020 and 2021, the US Finals has felt like its old self. The turnouts have been knocking on 6,000 teams and the "feel" of the event has been extremely positive for
DECEMBER 2021
everyone involved. Three arenas were used and teams could flow through their runs, starting at the John Justin Arena, moving outside to the Pavilion for the second run, and then wrapping up their long go-rounds with the third steer in the Will Rogers Coliseum. All of that happened in under 12 minutes! Ropers could stay "in the zone", didn't have to wait for their next round runs, and once the job was completed, ropers and their families had more time to spend at the shops in downtown Fort Worth or visit the newly redone Historic Stock Yards. With this many teams, horses, and ropers, the flow is always of main concern. Not just how the roping will flow, but how to keep everything efficient during the check-in and unloading process. The roping arenas are the easy part. Handling everyone who drives into the Will Rogers Memorial Center relatively at the same time to park, unload, stall, and hookup is where the true magic happens during an event of this size. Keeping all of the contestants happy and comfortable is one of the USTRC's main concerns. The Forth Worth city and facility allow this to happen. "We made some decisions when it came to parking, one-way streets, and traffic flow," says John English of the USTRC "The City of Fort Worth, the police, and the staff at the Will Rogers are so accommodating and helped us in every way possible to streamline parking, unpacking, and managing this many truck, trailers, and horses” As the 2021 season comes to a close and 2022 is ready to kick back off, the USTRC is grateful for the continued partnership with the City of Fort Worth and has locked in dates for the next three years. The 2022 Cinch National Finals of Team Roping will be held April 24th - May 1st, 2022. Keep checking back here at USTRC.com and on social media for schedules, updates.

PRCA & TETON RIDGE ANNOUNCE PIVOTAL PARTNERSHIP
TETON RIDGE NEW PRESENTING SPONSOR OF NATIONAL FINALS RODEO
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association®, and Teton Ridge today announced a multi-year deal for Teton Ridge to become the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
Teton Ridge is a brand dedicated to promoting and preserving iconic western culture. Since 1985, Las Vegas has played host to the NFR, except for 2020 when the NFR was moved to Arlington, Texas, because of COVID-19 restrictions in place in Las Vegas. The NFR is a culmination of more than 600 PRCA-sanctioned events within the regular season. Las Vegas Events, the special events coordinator for the rodeo, projects 17,000 people in attendance at every performance at the Thomas & Mack Center, or 170,000 total. The total estimated economic impact of the NFR was more than $175 million in 2019 according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. "This is great to partner with Teton Ridge as the presenting sponsor of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world," PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. "It's extremely pleasing when you can partner with an organization whose beliefs align with ours. We look forward to this being a great relationship moving forward." Emphasizing the same commitment to excellence that is exhibited in all Teton Ridge's integrations, the dedicated western-
preservation brand will place a special focus on elevating the PRCA World Champion crowning ceremony. "A PRCA world title received at the NFR is one of the most treasured achievements in rodeo," Teton Ridge CEO Jonathan Katz said. "Celebrating champions and the hard work that goes into rising to the top levels of each rodeo discipline is at the core of Teton Ridge. Aligning with PRCA and LVE as part of this iconic year-end event, we want to join them in honoring western sports and the tremendous professionals competing for world titles in a very prestigious way." The partnership comes on the heels of Teton Ridge's recent move to bring The American under the brand's umbrella and elevate the richest single-day rodeo in the world to new levels in March 2022 in Arlington, Texas, including an unmatched total purse of more than $3 million, non-stop rodeo action, live music, entertainment and more. The industry-leading event is the centerpiece of the brand's western sports portfolio. Adding the NFR partnership was a natural next step for Teton Ridge and further illustrates the significance placed on celebrating excellence at the top levels of the rodeo world. TETON RIDGE ACQUIRES 19,000 MEMBER
BETTER BARREL RACES AS PART OF ITS GROWING FOCUS ON WESTERN SPORTS
Barrel racers across the western sports industry scored a major victory today with the announcement that Better Barrel Races has been acquired by Teton Ridge, the new and rapidly growing Western culture brand founded and led by visionary business leader and Western culture enthusiast Thomas Tull. The acquisition comes on the heels of Teton Ridge’s recent moves to bring The American under the growing brand’s umbrella. Teton Ridge aims to bring Western sports to the national stage and to share the unique experiences and values of the iconic Western culture with audiences across the country and around the world. As an official sanctioning organization for The American, Better Barrel Races provides Teton Ridge and The American with a critical component that will help grow the annual March event, and provide ongoing continuity for the sport. Additionally, Better Barrel Races will benefit from improved capitalization, access to a broader and more deeply experienced financial and business management team, and an unprecedented opportunity for long-term growth. The exceptional team currently managing Better Barrel Races, that to date boasts more than 150 years combined experience in the barrel racing world, will continue to work alongside the team at Teton Ridge to advise, consult and assist with the historic partnership in order to become an unrivaled powerhouse. A sampling of the many ways competitors will see the benefits of this include expansion of the Better Barrel Races X-Tra program supporting local events across the country, expansion of the existing Better Barrel Races World Finals with significantly increased prize money, the addition of a handful of large-scale “regional finals” with divisional and futurity competitions and much more on the horizon. “We are very excited about this opportunity, not only for Better Barrel Races, but specifically for our membership and the entire barrel racing community,” commented, Corky Barder, co-founder of Better Barrel Races. “As a part of the Teton Ridge family, we can grow our events and sport like never before, increasing barrel racing’s reach to new audiences and taking it to the next level with additional large-scale races, elevated prize money and so much more.” 60
In recent months, Teton Ridge has actively acquired multiple Western sports properties, as well as invested in high pedigree bloodstock for its planned equine breeding and training facility, located near Weatherford, Texas. Integration of Better Barrel Races into Teton Ridge is expected to be immediate, so that qualifying events for The American will not be impacted- in order to give riders a chance to make the final field at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 6th of 2022.

“The Challenge program is designed to recognize and reward horses and exhibitors perpetuating ranching heritage and the spirit of the working American Quarter Horse.” Ranching Heritage Challenges are open to any horse bred by an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder and enrolled in the program. AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders are breeders who have been breeding American Quarter Horses for at least 10 years and whose horses are primarily bred to work on a cattle ranch. Horses foaled in 2010 and earlier are automatically enrolled in the program with no additional fees due. Anyone can own and show these eligible and enrolled horses in the Challenges. The Challenges offer multiple divisions for various ages and skill levels for both horse and rider. Classes include working ranch horse and ranch riding; some Challenge events also offer team roping and barrel racing. AQHA appreciates the generous sponsorship of John Deere and Nutrena in supporting these Ranching Heritage events. Jim Eagle’s THE SOUL OF A
MAN
Just released on Amazon
The Storyteller
The storyline… How does an innocent eighteen year old former altar boy and devout Roman Catholic morph into a deadly deep-black government assassin, by the time he is nineteen? Proceeding over the next two decades to carry out some of the most high profile assassinations , massacres and disappearances of our times - his first sanctioned kill being one of the most well know and revered personalities in the world ?
Answer ——
When denial, anger and grief lead not to acceptance but rather to guilt, vengeance and self destruction. Walk the path of a truly troubled soul - follow along as a man - code name “NewMex” - loses himself in alcohol, drugs, sex , violence and danger - to bury the deep-seated guilt and confusion that has lead him into a world where murder and mayhem are not only justified, but rewarded by a mysterious being known as THE KEEPER. Who trains him to become the deadliest assassin on earth. Then gives him a cause that makes it all “for the good of mankind”. That cause ? “PATRIOTISM “ Is he ? A patriot… ? Or is he just a high dollar assassin ? And who__or what__is THE KEEPER ? You decide - enjoy your journey into “THE SOUL OF A MAN”
Jim Eagle, an entrepreneur, inventor, stock speculator, “car guy,” poet, author, and weekend cowboy, lives in the shadows of Black Mountain, which looms over an old western mining town in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, called Cave Creek. Jim is well aquatinted with shadows, for he has spent the last fifty years of his life living in the shadows . . . of anger, guilt, and self-analysis.
The Backstory…
“When you lose a child, you lose yourself.”
THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

By ALLY GALLAGHER, Special to ProRodeo.com In 2019, rookie bareback rider Evan Betony claimed his first RAM Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo title. Since then, he's been craving the feeling of another circuit finals win. The 2021 finals brought him just that. "(Winning) still feels the same as the first time, it can't get any better than that," Betony said. When he took home the title in 2019, Betony was an underdog. But this year, he started strong from the start, winning the first two rounds, and clinching the win aboard Salt River Rodeo's Tonto. Going into the third and final round, Betony already had a 12.5-point lead, which he stretched to 19 points by the end of the night. Even with that lead, Betony knew he had to focus on his last ride. Also, a bull rider, he had to focus on not only riding

a horse each round, but a bull as well. "(I focused on) just staying relaxed," he said. "You know, you get kind of banged up from riding three horses and three bulls, but you just got to be cowboy." The 22-year-old cowboy
might be leaving Camp Verde, Ariz., with a win, but he's not getting on the road to the next rodeo quite yet. He's looking to take a little time off after a few injuries resurfaced. "I'll probably take some time off to heal and just hopefully get to the next one," Betony

said. "I sprained my ankle and contused my elbow, that I already had a previous injury on, so just going to rehab it again and take care of it." Winning $7,366, Betony's 2022 season is off to a strong start he's hoping to build off.
"Just staying consistent is the main thing," Betony said. "Drawing bigger horses at the bigger rodeos, where there's a lot of money, tough competition. There's a lot of talented guys out there riding a lot of good horses." Other winners at the $182,446 rodeo were all-around cowboy Seth Hall ($7,120, tie-down roping and team roping); steer wrestler Wyatt Jurney (16.0 seconds on three head); team ropers Lane Stock/Justin Simon (20.5 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Leon Fountain (228.5 points on three head); tie-down roper Seth Hall (29.8 seconds on three head); barrel racer Shannon McReynolds (51.41 seconds on three runs); steer roper Brian Garr (63.7 seconds on three head); and bull rider JaCauy Hale (262.5 seconds on three head).

BY NRHA During the Fédération Equestre Internationale General Assembly which began on November 14 and concludes today, November 17, reining was removed as an FEI discipline. According to former National Reining Horse Association President Mike Hancock, it was not an unexpected move. Hancock chaired NRHA’s FEI Task Force that was created in 2019 and has
NRHA Statement Regarding Reining’s Removal as FEI Discipline been involved with reining internationally in one capacity or another since the nineties. “We’ve had many conversations with FEI including face-to-face meetings in 2018 and 2020. Both entities recognize the value of and interest in reining and reining horses worldwide. However, we were never able to blend the two organizations and
their business models,” Hancock explained. He added, “Also with the difficulties during the 2018 World Equestrian Games as well as the ensuing announcement that there would be no multi-discipline WEG going forward, you might say the bloom came off reining as an international event for the reining community. For NRHA, there was less attraction, but we
continued with an International Competition Task Force created in 2020, and just days before the General Assembly we had conversations and tried to reach a working agreement with FEI officials. Unfortunately, this was not possible.” Current NRHA President Rick Clark was quick to thank Hancock and the International Competition Task Force and noted that he would repurpose it to address the possibility of future NRHA competitions in an international format. He said, “The NRHA still has an interest in International and Continental championships and will research resources that might allow them to take place. We are glad to hear that FEI and a good number of National Federations are supportive of us proceeding in that direction. The International Competition Taskforce created in 2020 will address this to determine if it is feasible.” NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter added, “All of us who have been involved thank the friends we have made at FEI for the years of support in jointly promoting the sport of reining.” Along with Hancock, the NRHA International Competition Task Force is comprised of Rick Clark, Rosanne Sternberg, Adam Heaton, Mark Blake, Andre DeBellefeuille and Paulus Beurskens.

The new research will support the goals included in the BLM’s 2021 Wild Horse and Burro Strategic Research Plan, also released today, which outlines the BLM’s wild horse and burro research priorities and lays out a plan to help address management needs through scientific advances.
The plan identifies the development of longer-lasting fertility control methods as a top research priority for the BLM. “The BLM is committed to finding the best, most effective and most humane ways to manage and protect wild horses and burros on public lands,” said BLM Director Tracy StoneManning. “Using the best

This topic of research includes work that would project the effects of climate change on rangeland resources and herds, or the effects of herds on ecosystems' resilience to climate change. Extreme drought conditions across the West last summer helped trigger emergency actions to gather more than 7,000 wild horses and burros – more than seven times what was gathered through emergency actions the previous year. “We’re already seeing the impact of climate change and prolonged and extreme drought on the resources that all animals who share the range depend on, including wild horses and burros,” said StoneManning. “This new research will help us better understand the effects of climate change and what actions we can take to best protect the health of our wild horse and burro herds and their habitat.”
Researchers are encouraged to submit proposals for consideration. Federal researchers should respond to a request for proposals for federal agencies. Non-federal researchers should respond to the notice of funding opportunity on Grants.gov. The BLM anticipates more than $1 million will be available, pending Congressional appropriations, to support projects that address either of the two top research priorities identified in the 2021 Strategic Research Plan. Research proposals will be evaluated by external peer reviewers and selected by the BLM for award in Fiscal Year 2022. The deadline to submit proposals is January 18, 2022.
“Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude.” - Steve N. “My wife, Debbie and I, work with Dr Steven Katz. He is the most compassionate and caring doctor I have ever had the privilege of working with. When I first called the practice to speak with someone about medical issues with our family, Dr Katz spent over a half hour on the phone with me. When is the last time anyone has heard of a doctor doing that. He is one cool dude. The entire staff and doctors at NPG are a cut above any other physicians I have come across. We really appreciate the quality of care they all provide.” - Steve N.

“Considering seeing a Naturopathy Dr? I wasn't sure what to expect either. From the staff to the Doctors, my experience over the last 5 years has been nothing but exceptional. I have foot drop and HAD chronic backpain. I no longer medicate with drugs thanks to this practice of fine individuals. I am able to hike miles and miles and enjoy intense Mountain biking. Thank you, Dr. Steven Katz.” - Scott S.
“I had an extended recovery period after an emergency surgery and I was unable to ride. In April 2019 I went on a trail ride with my family and strained my hip flexor. In search of options, I started physical therapy which only brought limited relief. In Feb. I started prolotherapy and spinal manipulation with Dr. Cronin, and now am pain free and am back to riding! My husband has just started prolotherapy and chiropractic adjustments and is quite pleased after just one treatment! Our daughter is also receiving spinal manipulation from Dr. Cronin. We are so appreciative of what Dr. Cronin brings for health and pain relief as an alternative to traditional medical treatments!” Thank you, Melinda Carter

Launching Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate
On November 2, at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the United States and United Arab Emirates officially launched the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) alongside 31 countries and over 48 nongovernment partners. In remarks at the World Leaders Summit, President Biden announced that the United States intends to mobilize $1 billion in investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation over five years (2021-2025). Previewed at President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate in April, AIM for Climate is a pioneering initiative uniquely focused on increasing investment and enabling greater public-private and cross-sectoral partnerships, intended to both raise global climate ambition, and underpin transformative climate action in the agriculture sector in all countries. AIM for Climate has already begun to bear fruit, garnering an “early harvest” of $4 billion in increased investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation over five years. AIM for Climate partners are mobilizing this investment to close the global investment gap in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation. Climate-smart agriculture is an approach that helps to guide actions needed to transform and reorient agricultural systems to tackle three main objectives: sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes, while adapting and building resilience to climate change and/or reducing/removing greenhouse gas emissions. AIM for Climate seeks to create incentives for, and mechanisms for maximizing the impact of, new investments toward an agriculture sector that is ready to face a changing climate. Government partners are providing the crucial foundation of AIM for Climate, through a wave of public investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation. Other sectors, including
88
business, philanthropy, and other non-government partners are invited to build upon that foundation with “innovation sprints” – investments in specific, impactful, measurable, expedited efforts – or by providing critical knowledge for identifying investment gaps, challenges, and opportunities.
AIM for Climate has three primary objectives:
Demonstrate collective commitment to significantly increase investment in agricultural innovation for climate-smart agriculture and food systems over five years (2021-2025); Support frameworks and structures to enable technical discussions and the promotion of expertise, knowledge, and priorities across international and national levels of innovation to amplify the impact of participants’ investments; and Establish appropriate structures for exchanges between Ministers, chief scientists, and other stakeholders as key focal points and champions for cooperation on climate-related agricultural innovation, to engender greater co-creation and cooperation on shared research priorities. AIM for Climate focuses on increasing and accelerating investment in, and other support for, climate-smart agricultural innovation in the areas of:Scientific breakthroughs via basic agricultural research through national-level government and academic research institutions; Public and private applied research, including through support to international research centers, institutions, and laboratory networks; and Development, demonstration, and deployment of practical, actionable, and innovative products, services, and knowledge to producers and other market participants, including through national agricultural research extension systems. AIM for Climate government partners announced at COP26 include: A full list of partners and more information on AIM for Climate is available at www.aimforclimate.org.

HRH The Princess Royal visits Queen's Award winner Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging
HRH The Princess Royal recently visited Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging—a staple in offering advanced imaging systems to the veterinary market—to recognize its 2021 Queen’s Award for Innovation, spotlighting the value of veterinary innovation to the greater community. According to a company release, the prestigious award acknowledges the unique, innovative Hallmarq 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner created from the ground up for small animal veterinary practices. Princess Anne toured the factory and offices while meeting staff from each department and Hallmarq’s guest, Kate Richards, BVM&S, DipM, MRCVS. “It was an honor for our team to welcome HRH The Princess Royal and show her around our Head Office in Guildford. Hallmarq has been at the forefront of developing innovative diagnostic systems for veterinary practices over the last 20 years,” said Mick Crosthwaite, Hallmarq CEO, in the release. “Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and this award is well-deserved recognition for the team’s passion and hard work in pursuit of our goal of improving the lives of animals and the people that care for them,” he continued. Hallmarq’s small animal MRI is the only 1.5T high-field scanner developed for veterinary use which addresses the challenges of imaging small animals of all breeds and sizes. The unique design integrates an innovative V-shaped bed and a 1-meter-long V-shaped spine coil to ensure correct patient positioning and spinal alignment. According to the release, it also enhances image quality compared with flat spine coils used in human machines and allows identification of more subtle changes to soft tissue structures. What's more, the small animal MRI features a radio-frequency shield which decreases project cost and complexity. Additional important design elements include veterinary-specific imaging software, flexible, open-top head coils for various patient sizes, and a comprehensive lifecycle customer support package called ‘Q-Care.’ “Our system requires no external radio-frequency shielding, reducing one of the key barriers to veterinary practices. This
Thousands of specimens show no evidence of COVID-19 in pets Aligning with statements from multiple animal and human healthcare groups, IDEXX Laboratories says there is no evidence companion animals have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. The veterinary diagnostics company says, to date, it has seen no positive results of the virus in the thousands of canine and feline specimens it has evaluated during validation of its new veterinary test system for COVID-19. The specimens were obtained from those submitted to IDEXX Reference Laboratories for PCR testing. These results, IDEXX says, align with the current understanding that the virus is primarily transmitted person-to-person and supports the recommendation against testing pets for COVID-19. “Should leading health authorities determine it is clinically relevant to test pets for the COVID-19 virus, IDEXX will be ready to make [the test] available,” says Jay Mazelsky, IDEXX Laboratories’ 90
makes advanced imaging more accessible to an increasing number of first opinion veterinary, emergency practices and referral centers, especially when combined with our innovative approach to customer support,” noted Steve Roberts, PhD, BSc, chief technology officer at Hallmarq. “These innovations have significant benefits for animal health and welfare, as improved diagnostic capability leads to more targeted treatments and better patient outcomes," he continued. While HRH The Princess Royal was on the tour she viewed a working system via a live video link and met with Hallmarq customer, Cody Alcott, DVM, DACVIM, a neurologist and owner of Tucson Veterinary Specialists in Arizona. Alcott has seen the advantages of the system first-hand to both his practice and patients and demonstrated the machine’s ease of use. Princess Anne was also introduced to Nick Bolas, DPhil, MBA, Hallmarq’s founding director, who unveiled the new standing equine leg CT system from Hallmarq, recognizing a mutual interest in horses and displaying a few advances in imaging technology since her last royal visit to Hallmarq 6 years ago. president and CEO. “Pets are important members of our family, and we want to keep them healthy and safe. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 and pet health across our global IDEXX Reference Laboratories network as this situation evolves.” The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) concur there is “no evidence at this time” that pets could be a source of infection for other animals or humans. However, those who are sick with COVID-19 should avoid contact with animals, just as they should with people, until more information is known about the virus. “When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick,” CDC says. “If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with pets and wear a face mask.”

Purses and Stakes Boosted for Turf Paradise’s Upcoming Meet
Overnight purses will get a 30% hike while the stakes program will receive a $1 million infusion as Turf Paradise prepares to kick off its 125-day meet, running through May 7, 2022, with racing conducted on a 5-day a week basis, Monday through Friday. “The increases are a result of State and Federal subsidies for horsemen’s purses,” said track general manager Vincent Francia. Last meet, a 79-day session, paid out $105,000 per day in purses. This upcoming meet will see $130,000 paid out per day. Both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses will benefit from the increases. In the stakes division, the track’s premier sprint race, The Phoenix Gold Cup, and marquee turf race, the Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile, have been raised from $75,000 to $100,000. The Arizona Oaks and Turf Paradise Derby have been raised from $50,000 to $75,000. Fifteen additional stakes have been boosted to black type status of $60,000.

Four New Champions Crowned at the 2021 USEF Endurance National Championships
by Leslie Potter/US Equestrian Communications Department
Four new national champions emerged over the weekend at the 2021 USEF Endurance National Championships for CEIYJI1*, CEI1*, CEIYJ2*, and CEI2* divisions. Horse-andrider combinations took on the South Carolina terrain at Broxton Bridge under cool and clear conditions on November 12 and 13, 2021. Geneva Soule and Syrocco Madrigal 2021 USEF CEI1* National Championship Geneva Soule (Frenchtown, N.J.) and Meg Sleeper’s 2011 Arabian mare, Syrocco Madrigal, took the champion title in the CEI1* division. “Maddie” is a seasoned competitor, with 1530 endurance miles completed so far over her sixyear career, and her experience helped take Soule to the National Championship win in the rider’s first time out at the event. Geneva Soule and Syrocco Madrigal. “I started competing in FEI rides last year ©Becky Pearman Photography with Meg’s horses, and this was my first National Championship ride,” said Soule. “The atmosphere was so friendly with everyone working toward a common goal: to keep the horses happy and healthy so we could get a completion. The Broxton Bridge trails and hospitality are something I always look forward to when I visit.” Soule has gotten to know Maddie well as one of her caretakers at home. “I hadn’t actually ridden Maddie in about two years, but I’ve known her and have helped care for her during that time as the manager of Meg Sleeper’s New Jersey farm, Goodwink Farm,” said Soule. “Maddie is a great mare and is very easy going around the farm. It’s fun seeing her Sydnie Tycer and Gypsy develop as a competitor, and she definitely lets Brocade. ©Becky Pearman her herdmates know that she’s an accomplished Photography endurance horse!” The Reserve National Champion title for the CEI1* went to Jose Ortega (Miami, Fla.) and Nazeefs Flashy Rose, a 2007 Arabian mare owned by Cheryl Van Deusen. Sydnie Tycer and Gypsy Brocade 2021 CEIYJ1* National Championship Sydnie Tycer (Natalbany, La.) and Gypsy Brocade, her 2008 Arabian mare, earned the National Champion title in the CEIYJ1* as well as the Best Condition award for the one-star division. Tycer and “Gypsy” have built a bond over seven years together, and that connection helped them to finish strong. “She has such a big personality and is always willing to please,” said Tycer. “She can be a little overdramatic and feisty at times, but she gets Charly Dugan and Southern Justice. calmer as the race goes on. crossing the finish line. She was extremely forward the entire time and never lost motivation to go.” Looking ahead, Tycer has ambitions of representing the U.S. in endurance competition on the world stage. “My goal for 2022 is to get all of my qualifications to be on the U.S. Young Rider Team,” she said. “I hope to reach these goals by the end of the year.” Reserve National Champion honors in the division went to Avery Betz-Conway (Kingsland, Ga.) and RR Soldier, a 2012 Arabian gelding owned by Stephen Rojek. 2021 USEF CEIYJ2* National Championship Charly Dugan and Southern Justice Charly Dugan (Muncy, Pa.) and her 2012 Arabian gelding, Southern Justice, rode to the win in the CEIYJ2* division. Dugan and “Roo” are capping off an exciting year of competition in which they competed as part of the U.S. Endurance Team at the 2021 FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Riders and Juniors in Ermelo, The Netherlands, in September. Roo is a former show horse re-trained for endurance by Dugan’s mom, Sally Jellison. Dugan took over the ride last year in the lead up to the World Championship. Dugan and Jellison were able to ride together for part of the course at Broxton Bridge, which Dugan cites as a highlight of the weekend. “Roo can be a spook monster, but he’s always well intentioned and he’s very sweet,” said Dugan. “When competing, he puts his big boy pants on and is all business. The first loop is always a struggle, but after that it’s smooth sailing. “Looking ahead to 2022, I have several goals for Roo,” said Dugan. “They are completing his first 3*, getting most of my rides with him to get my Elite Status, and continuing to spend time in the ring with him to work on equitation.” Erin Lemmons and Tuscarora John 2021 USEF CEI2* National Championship Erin Lemmons (Hico, Texas) and Tuscarora John, her own 2006 Arabian gelding, earned the National Champion title in the CEI2*, finishing the 120km ride with a time of 7:30:15. Lemmons and Tuscarora John have a long history together, having competed at the FEI level since 2016. The Reserve National Champion title went to Cheryl Van Deusen (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) and JG General, her own 2012 Arabian gelding. The Best Condition award for the two-star division went to third-place finishers Kelsey Russell (Williston, Fla.) and Tru Beau Sardi, a 2013 Arabian gelding owned by Cheryl Van Deusen.

possible at that stage of the game, but it also seemed very unrealistic that she would keep her streak going. “It was quite a roller coaster,” she said. “The carrot was always dangling. It felt like we’d gain a little, then we’d go weeks without winning anything, knowing in the back of our minds that we just had to win, win, win to ever think we could accomplish it. It was a
come-from-behind struggle without a doubt.” It was also well-deserved, and she’ll be back on the best-paying playground in ProRodeo with 14 other top cowgirls. “Is it about records? No,” Lockhart said. “I just kept thinking to myself, ‘What am I going to do this fall if I don’t make it?’ I tried to vision sitting on my couch watching and how much that was going to drive me crazy, so I just told myself, ‘Suck it up and go out and try to get there.’ ” Mission accomplished.
Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ 2022 Series Qualifier to Return to U.S. with New Location in San Juan Capistrano, California Communications Department After a yearlong hiatus of Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ series competition in the United
States, US Equestrian, along with the Federation Equestre International (FEI) are pleased to announce the return of a series qualifier to a new location at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., from May 10-15, 2022.
The competition will mark the first time the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ USA will be held on the West Coast of the United States. “Blenheim EquiSports is very excited to be hosting the U.S. leg of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup in 2022. It has been our goal to bring international caliber show jumping back to San Juan Capistrano and Southern California and highlighting the Nations Cup will be the pinnacle of our competition calendar next year,” said Stephanie Lightner of Blenheim EquiSports. The U.S. leg of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ series was last held in 2020 in Wellington, Fla., with the COVID-19 pandemic halting plans for a 2021 edition. As the only qualifier for the series held on U.S. soil, the return of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ USA will serve as an opportunity for teams from North/Central America and Caribbean to earn points towards qualification for the annual final competition held in Barcelona, Spain in late September. Additional details will be forthcoming and released over the next several months, including information on ticket sales, hospitality offerings, and further competition opportunities.

TEAM ROPING PAIRS REVEALED FOR 2021 WNFR
By TANNER BARTH, PRCA Media Coordinator
When team ropers qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo it's not uncommon for them to have to choose a new partner for the rodeo because their partners didn't finish in the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. That will be the case again at the 2021 Wrangler NFR presented by Teton Ridge. Four different cowboys have had to find different team roping partners headed into Las Vegas. Nine-time NFR qualifier Derrick Begay is teaming up with 12-time NFR cowboy
Brady Minor. The other duo joining forces in Vegas is Quinn Kesler, a three-time NFR qualifying header and last year's third place finisher in Arlington, Texas, Joseph Harrison. The other team roping pairs set to compete at the 2021 Wrangler NFR at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Dec. 2-11 are listed below: 2021 NFR Team Roping Pairs

Mauney in historic run at NFR PRO RODES NEWS
PUEBLO, Colo. – Two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney would roll over in his bed as a kid and excitedly turn off his alarm clock and run to the living room. Mauney was in elementary school at the time, and the aspiring bull rider was not allowed to stay up all night to watch the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seeing as he was in the eastern time zone in North Carolina. Mauney, though, was allowed to set his alarm five minutes before the bull riding would start at the Thomas & Mack Center so he could then rush to turn the television on and watch some of his childhood heroes compete inside the prestigious yellow bucking chutes.
One small memory like that is just another reminder of how special a qualification for the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo later this year would be for Mauney. The future PBR Ring of Honor inductee, and one of the greatest bull riders of all time, has never competed at the NFR after focusing his career in the PBR since he turned pro in 2006. “Growing up, yeah, I watched the PBR, but I also watched the NFR,” Mauney said Monday while making the drive to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. “I would have my alarm set and timed perfectly to where I could watch the bull riding, go to sleep and then head to school in the morning.” Mauney has risen to No. 5 in the PRCA bull riding standings following an impressive summer run, qualifying for the NFR for the first time in December.
