After governmental land purchases, his heirs were given an equivalent amount of land further west, including land near Prescott, which is where the current O RO Ranch is located. In 1940, the ranch registered 250 mares and stallions with the fledgling American Quarter Horse Association, and in 1973, its 257,000 acres were purchased by John N. Irwin II’s JJJ Corp. Today, it is majority owned by Irwin’s daughter, Jane Irwin Droppa, and her family. “It is an honor to recognize this great ranch, which has produced world-class ranch horses for more than 150 years,” said Karen McCuistion, the AQHA senior director of member programs. “Their

million yet,” Pacheco told PBR.com on Sunday night. “When I warmed up my rosin, I hear everything they started to say, and then I knew, but I just try to clean my mind like I do every time. I needed to do my job. I needed to ride my bull.” No bull rider in the history of the sport had ever even attempted to ride for $2.1 million until Sunday afternoon. It should come as no surprise to anyone the Ice Man, as he is so fittingly nicknamed, would not flinch. Pacheco took care of County Jail for a picturesque 89 points – letting out a celebratory yell as he walked off the dirt – to pass seven-time PRCA champion Sage Kimzey (88.5 points on Gladiator’s Hammer) for the event lead. Pacheco’s celebration was by no means one of a rider who was about to win $2.1 million. Rather, he calmly hung up his bull rope and looked on with anticipation to see how the rest of The Shootout Round would go.

Pacheco wins record-setting $2.1 million at The American ARLINGTON, Texas – 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco was sitting aboard County Jail in the bucking chutes at AT&T Stadium when he began to warm up his rosin.

The always stoic and focused Pacheco was actually not even sure if he was still eligible to win $2.1 million on Sunday afternoon at The American. He had bucked off Jive Turkey in the long round and had only made it back to the four-man Shootout Round via buckoff time (3.49 seconds). The 27-year-old will often try to listen to the arena music as part of his chute procedure to block out any other distraction, but his concrete focus was cracked for a split second when he heard in-arena announcer Brandon Bates remind those in attendance Pacheco was about to ride for $2.1 million. “Before I get on my bull, I did not know if I was eligible for $2 18

NEW YORK, Feb. 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ --

Five New Episodes Ordered as“1883” Smashes Record as Paramount+’s Most-Watched Title Ever Globally

Total Company Revenue Increased 16% Year-Over-Year in Q4, Reflecting Growth Across All Revenue Types Quarterly Global Streaming Revenue Grew 48% YearOver-Year to $1.3 Billion, Driven by Strength in Subscription and Advertising Added a Record 9.4M Global Streaming Subscribers, Overwhelmingly Led By Paramount+, to Reach Over 56M Subscribers in the Quarter, and Achieved 84% Year-OverYear Growth in Streaming Subscription Revenue

Paramount+ announced more of its hit series from Taylor Sheridan, 1883, is planned for the service following a record-breaking performance that shattered the service’s record as the mostwatched title ever globally. Additionally, the service has ordered 1932, the next chapter of the “Yellowstone” origin story. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, 1932 will follow a new generation of Duttons during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression.

ViacomCBS See Streaming Revenue Grow 48%

Fueled By a Diverse Global Content Offering, Subscriber Acquisition and Consumption on Paramount+ Accelerated - Driven By Original Scripted Dramas 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown; Family Friendly Films Such As Clifford The Big Red Dog; and Live Sports With The NFL ON CBS Added 10M Pluto TV Global Monthly Active Users (MAUs) to Reach Over 64M and Grew Revenue by 45% Year-Over-Year Strengthened Financial Position by Generating $2.3B of Net Proceeds From Non-Core Asset Dispositions

STATEMENT FROM BOB BAKISH PRESIDENT & CEO “In the fourth quarter you saw the power of strategy and strength of execution across the company. Our success was evident across all lines of business, and spotlighted by streaming, where we achieved our best quarter ever in streaming subscription growth - more than doubling our subscriber additions from last quarter with a record 9.4M additions, expanding BOB BAKISH our total global streaming subscribers to over 56M. And, to top it off, we saw meaningful acceleration in our global Pluto TV MAUs, to reach over 64M and generate over $1 billion in revenue in the year. This sets us up well for 2022, where I’m tremendously excited to continue to build on this powerful momentum - investing in global content, distribution, and market expansion - to further drive scale.”

Next Chapter, “1932,” Will Follow a New Generation of the Dutton Family Even as the Duttons of 1883 will continue their journey, viewers will soon get to know a whole new generation of the family in 1932. This original series will follow the Dutton family during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression. There was no word on casting, but using simple math we can make guesses that one of Duttons at the center of the story will be the dad to Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in Yellowstone, which is also getting ready for its fifth season.

“The incredible storytelling and stellar performances behind 1883 have fueled phenomenal new records for Paramount+,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer, ViacomCBS Streaming. “Promoting the series through linear sampling on the Paramount Network during their latest record-breaking season of ‘Yellowstone’ further enabled us to introduce Sheridan’s loyal audience to this fantastic new series. We look forward to bringing fans even more of the Duttons’ origin story.” “While most shows franchise near the end of their run, we seized the opportunity to franchise in real time, to drive record growth for both streaming and linear properties, proving TAYLOR SHERIDAN the power of ViacomCBS’ differentiated model,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios. “With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding ‘Yellowstone,’ and with 1932 we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe.” “Taylor Sheridan has put roots down for the Dutton Family tree that stand strong and tall, with many branches that continue to engage record-breaking audiences,” said executive producer David C. Glasser. “It is awe-inspiring to work with Taylor, ViacomCBS and the entire team on this universe.” Created by Academy Award® Nominee Taylor Sheridan, 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana. 1883 is executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

The Run For A Million Open qualifier at the 2022 Cactus Reining Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona brought riders and horses whom traveled from around the world to take a shot at being a Top 10 Qualifier. Taking place Saturday March 26 at Westworld of Scottsdale, the open qualifier was a chance for riders to earn themselves a spot in the Million Dollar Competition at The Run For A Million, which is held in August in Las Vegas. Eighty-four riders trotted to the center of the arena and compete for a spot during an event that lasted late into the evening and included a starstudded field littered with National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Champions, NRHA Derby Champions, National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Champions and a Triple Crown winner. When the dust settled, Arno Honstetter and the celebrated show mare Ms Dreamy prevailed with a hefty score of 229.5, earning $11,514 for owner Frederick Christen. The pair is well-acquainted, with Honstetter qualifying for and competing on the daughter of Magnum Chic Dream and out of Gal With A Gun (by Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner]) at last year’s The Run For A Million, where they finished eighth in the Million Dollar Competition – which was won by Gunna Stop and Kole Price. Riders could ride any horse they wanted in the qualifier. They do not have to ride the same horse in the Million Dollar Competition at The Run For A Million. In past years, trainers who earned a spot in the event had a running list of possible mounts. “She was better than ever before. I don’t know if she’ll be my pick [for the 2022 TRFAM], it will be whatever Rick and Brenda [Joyce] decide,” Honstetter said. Nine other Open riders qualified for the 2022 The Run For A Million at the Cactus Reining Classic. They will be joined in the Million Dollar Competition field by five riders who previously qualified for the Million Dollar Competition: Josh Tishman, Andrea Fappani, Dany Tremblay, Matt Palmer, Francesco Martinotti and Jordan McBurney.

Draw Party for Reining at Scotts The Arabian Reining Horse Association Futurity draw party at the Bennett Fine Jewelry & Sculpture booth during the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show set the stage for the competition that would follow. Each exhibitor took turns drawing a number that would dictate the order of their run in the classes. The draw was managed by Phyllis LaMalfa and Cotton McNutt both of whom help to manage the Arabian Reining event as part of the Annual Scottsdale Show. Exhibitors hope to pick a high number, as competitors feel it is to their advantage to ride toward the end of the class. Each exhibitor picked their own Markel Insurance key chain fob with a draw number on the back that determined the order that they would compete for the prize money in the Purebred Arabian class of $15,000 and the Half Arabian competition for $32,000. A commercial exhibitor at the Scottsdale Show for over 40-years, Lesley supports the show in many ways. By sponsoring the party she had the opportunity to showcase, SuperSlide, her newest sculpture that is nearly finished. Super-Slide and her other bronze artworks are an extension of her passion for creating original equestrian theme designs in 18k gold and diamonds into tiny sculptures worn as jewelry. Over time, these designs developed a following from collectors all over the world, many of whom desire more than one piece, after discovering most of the jewelry connects with others created in Lesley’s collections. Her Joan of Arc medallions in gold with diamonds, are very popular and reflect Lesley’s interest in projecting women in a favorable light. She expresses her passion for horses in her many works including: Save the Wild Horses, Reining, Cutting, Arabian, Quarter Horse, and more equestrian themed creations. After decades of creating one-of-a-kind jewelry expressing her creativity in bronze sculptures has been exciting. “So many folks have stopped to really take a good look at my new bronzes and watch while I work on SuperSlide that it has been a lot of fun,” claims Lesley adding. “It’s exciting to see people engage and ask questions about the sculpture.” The first, smaller, version of Super-Slide in a limited edition was acquired by a collector from northern California. “It’s an emotional relationship folks have with jewelry and sculptures, it’s more than just the diamonds, gold and bronze. It’s a connection people feel with the piece that makes the entire process so rewarding” says Lesley. For more information on Bennett Fine Jewelry & Sculpture visit: www.bennettfinejewelry.com.

Jayne grew up always loving horses. Her mother, Patricia, was found of riding and the wonderful community that surrounded the sport. Jayne’s true passion for riding started in 1969 in Naperville, IL, when she purchased her first horse, Kari. The Oakbrook Hounds Pony Club would be her first job where she would clean stalls in exchange for vaulting lessons. Jayne quickly became President of the Oakbrook Hounds Pony Club and earned a top A rating from the prestigious group. In 1978, Jayne moved to Arizona and made the trip with her horses and her long-time friend and fellow Pony Club member, Pam Stubbs. Arizona provided new opportunities and Jayne she found a job at Jimmy’s Saddlery, a custom tack shop, where she worked from 1981 to 1982. In 1982, Jayne’s love of supporting the equestrian community birthed Greenway Saddlery Incorporated, a tack shop of her own that focused on the disciplines of hunter jumper, dressage, and eventing. The building was completed in January 1983 and the store officially opened that same month. Jayne dedicated her time 38

growing and supporting the equestrian community in Arizona. In 2004, she moved Greenway to Scottsdale, AZ, next to the West World Arena to better support riders during the many events held there. 2005 was a big year for Jayne. During this year she met the love of her life, David Merkes, and honed her snow skiing skills, another passion, to Olympic levels by traveling too many clinics across the western states. Jayne and David enjoyed many unforgettable adventures touring the Southwest on their motorcycles, watching live music, and attending horse shows. Jayne returned to competitive riding in 2013 with her horse, A Natural Artist, and went on to win competitions for dressage, hunter jumper, eventing, and AQHA throughout the United States including the Level 1 AM Hunter Champion in 2017, the Level 1 AM Champion for Amateur Working Hunter and Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation in 2018. She continued to show at events until 2020. Jayne dedicated her life to growing and supporting the equestrian community in the Southwest. Though out her life she was passionate about improving the lives of the animals and those they shared their life with contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to various non-profits and the equestrian community.

Jayne Hickey, age 65, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on February 5, 2022. Beloved partner to David Merkes. Cherished sister to Roger (Jeanne) Hickey, Robert (Paula) Hickey, Jill (Dan) Zak and Richard J Hickey II. Beloved Aunt and friend to many. Jayne’s life was lead from the heart. She was a caring and giving soul that used her passion and talents to build up those around her. She always brought light to any situation and was willing to put in the hard work to make something better than how she found it. Since her first horse Kari in 1969, Jayne understood the importance of building relationships that would last the test of time and we are all grateful that we were given the opportunity to come along for the ride. In lieu of flowers, Jayne loved supporting the following non-profit organizations: Animal Guardian Network A Place for the ones no one else would save (http://animalguardiannetwork.org) Or Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge (http:// healingheartsaz.org)

1972 Pony Club Rally

I have been close friends with Jayne Hickey since high school that we attended together in Naperville, Illinois. We met through our horses, taking lessons together, riding in horse shows, fox hunting with the Oak Brook Hounds Hunt, and Pony Club. We quickly became close friends and shared many great times together with our horses. Our families became very close as well and shared Christmas and special holidays together. Jayne was such a special person she loved her horses and would work tirelessly to be sure they had the best of care, she was very intelligent and no one had faster fingers on a calculator than Jayne. With her long legs she excelled in dressage, which was always my weakness I loved to jump. So many times, Jayne would work on my horse’s flatwork, and I would school her horses over fences. In Pony Club we worked and studied hard and obtained our “A” rating and had many fun trips on the pony club bus to rally’s and know downs which are kind of like Jeopardy for horse knowledge, we loved having Jayne on our team she always got the answers right!

We traveled together to many horse shows competing in the hunters and equitation classes. I assisted Jayne in the drive from Illinois to Arizona when her family moved here in 1978. We set out from Illinois for the 4-day drive in a bumper pull two horse trailer and a1972 pickup with roll down windows, and no AC in June. Neither of us had been to Arizona before and we were imagining that it was like the Sahara Desert with blowing sand. When we arrived in Flagstaff, we were thinking maybe it’s not that bad! But as we drove down the hill to the Valley and it got hotter and hotter and our skin was sticking to the vinyl seats, we started thinking what are we getting in to here! Her parents had purchased a beautiful 5-acre property at 100th Street and Cholla with several barns, two big grass pastures and large arena and a big swimming pool so we were delighted once we arrived. Before moving to AZ myself in 1984, our friendship continued with many long phone calls, and many trips back and forth to visit. We enjoyed skiing, tubing the Salt River, park and swap trips, concerts together as well as all the horse activities. Jayne was the most caring, giving, generous person I will probably ever know in my life I was so blessed to call her my friend.

One of my favorite things about Jayne is her generosity, her truthfulness, and her intelligence, especially in running a business. We have worked together for 35 years, and I have learned so much from her. It was like we were sisters in our relationship. We always trusted each other and after a while, when you work with someone that long, you start to think the same. She was always saying that “Great minds think alike.” Her horsemanship was incredible, she was a real horsewoman, she really was! Jayne was an ‘A’ Pony Clubber in Illinois. She took it seriously. Taking care of the horses and learned so much from her in that aspect as well. Her knowledge of horses was incredible and the care for them. Jayne was always so AZ Bike Week 2019 @ willing and generous to share her Westworld in Scottsdale knowledge with people. You would ask her a question and she was always able to answer it, even if it was to tell you to call the vet. She was a wealth of knowledge. Jayne personally took care of her horses. She got them ready to show, took them to the shows and did everything herself. Her older horses lived with her their entire lives, and they lived a long time with Jayne’s excellent care. She would trim the older horse’s feet herself, and she believed that when you get a horse that it is a lifetime commitment. She took the best of care of every horse until they were ready to pass on. She always kept that promise to the horse. As a great horsewoman, Jayne never had a horse that was not worth making that commitment on. She had a good eye and kept her really good horses going for a long time. Jayne was hands on…. There have been 10’s of thousands of people that have shopped at Greenway over 40 years. We loved when someone came in and were just starting. We loved asking them questions to make sure that we outfitted them the best way for them as individuals. If they were just starting with lessons, we gave them the best options without breaking the bank Jayne and her family built the first store on Greenway Road, then she pioneered buying the new building near WestWorld because she saw that Scottsdale was making the investment in the venue,

so she would as well. The reason she was a pioneer was because she envisioned what WestWorld would become before others. She saw that WestWorld was going to be THE PLACE. Jayne saw that and she took that big step and stepped up and then we stepped in. Her little store was paid for, and it was making money, so it was a big deal to make the move to Scottsdale. As WestWorld got very popular with all of the horse shows and events, so did our store! That was her vision, she knew that would happen. Smart, intelligent and savvy as a businesswoman, Jayne led the store and us thru economic declines and built her store into one of the best anyplace. We have both gone on the road a lot, and mostly alone. I remember when she bought the BIG RIG and she told me that this is going to be the vehicle that you will be driving. We were both in the truck, and she was showing me how to drive it. Soon, she pulled over and told me to switch with her so that I could drive. I got into the driver’s seat, and we drove around WestWorld, and she said, “Now, just take it home tonight and drive it for a couple of days.” She said, “You have got to get used to this thing.” I was like, Oh my goodness! And, I did it! The trust to give me that truck - I said, “You want me to take this expensive truck home and drive it?” Jayne said, “Yes, you have to get used to it!” Jayne became very serious about skiing, and in typical Jayne fashion she put all of her effort into it. She became an expert skier. She went to ski clinics for experts and became very good. Everything that Jayne did she did 100% and she did that with skiing too. Jayne became an expert level skier and she really enjoyed it a lot. My favorite story is when Jayne really did not know much about skiing, she took a couple of lessons. I had skied a lot when I was in college and lived in California and when I had first moved to Arizona. I could ski confidently on the Black Diamonds, I did not do moguls or anything like that. We were up in Flagstaff and we both took a lesson, then we were on our own for the rest of the day. We were just skiing for fun, the blues and the greens. Jayne was comfortable with those, and we were having fun. So, I brought up that there is a Black Diamond that I think that you can do. It is not very long, it’s steep at the beginning and then it kind of mellows out at the bottom. So, I told Jayne, “I will go down first, just follow my tracks and you will be fine.” I went down the hill, and was down at the bottom, and here is Jayne trying to follow my tracks but not really being able to stay right on them. She was trying to snowplow down this Black Diamond and it was the steep part at the top. She was snowplowing and tried to turn so hard that she started going backwards. Then she fell and was spread eagle all the way down the hill! All we could do was laugh, she was not hurt, but it was so funny to see her spread out like that twirling down the hill! When she stood up, she was laughing so hard, all we did was laugh and laugh, we could barely ski the rest of the way home, we were both laughing so hard…. I will never forget that, I can envision it right now……

Bull Rider Kaique Pacheco Wins Historic $2.1 Million at The American Rodeo 2022, Presented By Teton Ridge

Richest Single-Day Rodeo in Western Sports Awards Unprecedented $3 Million across eight disciplines ARLINGTON, Tex. (March 9, 2022) – In 2014 when Kaique Pacheco came to the United States from Itatiba, Brazil, he never dreamed that one bull ride would result in a historic $2.1 million payout. As the dust settled inside of AT&T stadium at The American Rodeo, presented by Teton Ridge on Sunday night, a mere eight seconds turned into the biggest single-day paycheck of the talented third generation cowboy’s career. “I grew up with the sport,” Pacheco said following the event. “My father rode bulls; my uncles were bull riders and bull fighters. I was determined to be a bull rider, too. I love the sport.” Shortly after arriving in the United States, Pacheco claimed the title of 2015 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Rookie of the Year and has excelled ever since. Rapidly launching up the ranks in the PBR world standings, the young Brazilian went on to claim the prestigious title of PBR World Champion in 2018. “I can’t describe this moment,” the 27-year-old continued. “I always dreamed about winning The American Rodeo and I finally made that happen.” Returning to the championship round after being bucked off earlier in the day, Pacheco knew he was embarking upon one ride that could forever change his life. Paired with an athletic bovine named “County Jail” Pacheco remained calm, matching the animal jump-for-jump for an impressive 89-point ride score. Acquired by Teton Ridge in 2021, The American Rodeo is a true open competition format bringing together top professional rodeo champions and every day, hardworking cowboys and cowgirls in a winner-take-all showdown, meant to crown the finest talent the world has to offer. Athletes from eight disciplines competed at the treasured celebration of western sports - bareback, saddle bronc, barrel racing, breakaway roping, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Top rodeo athletes from qualifier events across the country arrived in Texas beginning on Feb. 20 to compete at preliminary and semifinals events in hopes of making it through to Friday’s “Contender Round” and a chance to move on to AT&T Stadium Sunday afternoon for the “Crown Jewel of Rodeo.” As the field narrowed on Friday night, Pacheco and his fellow 44

competitorsset their sights on ultimately becoming a champion and earning the biggest single-day paycheck of their careers during Sunday’s competition at AT&T Stadium. In just nine short years since its inception, The American Rodeo’s payout earnings rival that of the Kentucky Derby. The 2022 competition boasted an unprecedented total purse of more than $3 million with each disciplines event winner collecting $100,000. Each year, the prestigious event offers a $1 million bonus to any Contender athlete who wins on of the disciplines. In 2021 no one claimed the bonus, so it rolled over to 2022 making the purse grow to unmatched sum. Other champions on Sunday included: Tilden Hooper (bareback); Caleb Smidt (tie-down roping); Dawson Hay (saddle bronc); Jesse Brown (steer wrestling); Andrew Ward and Buddy Hawkins II (team roping); Jackie Crawford (breakaway roping) and Shelley Morgan (barrel racing).

Clayton Edsall became For Edsall, part of his measure of success is not the newest Million Dollar only picking up the wins, but Rider to join the elite watching the horses he has club. If you do your homework earned $10,000 in the and keep a horse sound, not Finals and finished the only physically but mentally, it is great to watch a horse go on year with $1,016,157.75. and be successful. That means While the cows weren’t a lot to me.” cooperative during his First and foremost, Edsall Finals run, the in-arena thanks his wife, Chelsea, he says, for not only being his announcement of his wife and biggest supporter but milestone had the crowd also for being a great partner on their feet in the Will helping in his horse business. Clayton Edsall Newest Member in the Rogers Coliseum. The backing of his parents, all of NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Club Edsall, originally from Montana, recently moved his training operation from Oakdale, California, to Mineral Wells, Texas. His roots run deep in horses, where he started evolving his horsemanship riding ranch-raised horses in Montana. Today, he counts every major NRCHA premier event championship title to his résumé, bar the Snaffle Bit Futurity. “My success started in the bridle and went backwards, really,” Edsall, 41, said. “I started [my premier event earnings] winning the World’s Greatest Horseman on Skeets Oak Peppy in the bridle, then won the Stallion Stakes, won the Derby then Hackamore Classic. Now, it would be sure fun to win the 3-year-old Futurity. I just got to thinking about that and it seems a lot of times it goes the other way, but I’ve gone from bridle to snaffle with my wins. Most of those horses that I’ve won on are still showing—Metallic Train, Bet He Sparks, Bet Hesa Boon and Skeets Oak Peppy.” And, they all helped Edsall to achieve the million-dollar mark. His biggest paycheck has come aboard Metallic Train (Metallic Cat x Sparking Train x Shining Spark), owned by Beverly Servi, with $35,471 for first place in the 2018 NRCHA Stallion Stakes. The mare has amassed $172,250 in NRCHA earnings with Edsall, and along with the K&L Phillips-owned stallion Bet He Sparks (Bet 68

Edsall’s clients and customers that trusted him with their horses, and the support of his late brother, Roy, have all had a hand in helping him in his career. “When I was getting started [training horses] I was around a guy, Tink Elordi, who would harp on me about how it didn’t matter what you put on a horse’s face but it was about how you use your feet, ride with your body and the energy you put out,” said Edsall. “That has been a huge focus for me and been a positive in the older horses. I wasn’t raised in the industry and throughout my career, fellow trainers have helped me learn, whether they knew it or not. Watching someone else warm a horse up, bouncing ideas off each other, it is so valuable and helpful.” It takes a lot of support to keep a training operation running flawlessly, and Edsall recognizes the efforts from not only his family and customers, but also all of the veterinarians and farriers that help his horses get the job done in the show pen.“Dr. Marty Gardner of Western Performance Equine, Dr. Joe Carter of Oklahoma Equine, our farriers, the staff and so many more people help keep us going,” he said. “I’m humbled and appreciative of everyone that has helped me and the horses along the way.”

Mauricio Moreira wins Glendale, AZ PBR with three 90-point rides

Crimber and Yates ready to lead Arizona Ridge Riders PBR Team By Justin Felisko

By Mandi McCary GLENDALE, Ariz. – Mauricio Gulla Moreira (Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil) delivered three 90-point rides in three tries at Glendale’s PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB), winning the PBR U.S. Border Patrol Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, on Sunday afternoon and climbing to No. 2 in PBR’s world standings. After winning the first two rounds in Glendale, Moreira needed only 81.5 points to win the event. He nodded his head and, on the night’s last out, knocked down a 91.75-point score. Following a first-place finish on Saturday night, Moreira began the final day of the

event atop the leaderboard and was paired with WSM’s Nasty Wishes (WSM Auctioneers/ Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) in Round 2. Launching from the chutes aboard his bovine opponent, Moreira collected the highest score of Sunday’s opening round with an impressive 90.5-point score, his second 90-point score of the weekend, to sail into the championship round. The 22-year-old Brazilian then selected I’m Legit Too (Hart Cattle Co/ Hale) as his matchup in the final round.

Ridge Riders general manager Casey Lane explained Sunday during the Ridge Riders’ unveiling press conference that Crimber will serve as the team’s technical coach, while Yates will fill the role of

team manager. The two coaches will have shared responsibilities with the ultimate goal of delivering a championship to the city of Glendale and the state of Arizona. “We interviewed lots of guys, and we had lots of opportunities to talk with professionals in the sport who we thought were super competent candidates for coaching,” Lane said. “At

the end of the day, we wanted

to bring a mix of experiences, a mix of backgrounds, and a mix of skillsets that we just couldn’t get in one coach. We wanted to sort of juxtapose some things from a talent standpoint on the coaching side. So we brought in two guys who are going to split up the responsibilities rather than having one head coach in charge of everything. “We are having a team manager, which is a very similar approach you will see in European soccer, and then a technical coach. He will be the coach in the weeds, making decisions in the moment at the events. But we will have a broader approach with two heads is better than one when we are talking about the draft and bull choices and the way we are going to be implementing new training techniques, sports psychology, and some of those outside influences. We will have more of a brain trust with myself and our two coaches.”

Jim Eagle, an entrepreneur, inventor, stock speculator, “car guy,” poet, author, and weekend cowboy, lives in the shadows of Black Mountain, which looms over an old western mining town in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, called Cave Creek. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. WYATT DENNY WINS PARADA DEL SOL WIN

By Caoline Arendt, Special to ProRodeo.com It's not often a good gut feeling, and a last-minute plane ticket equals a paycheck and round win, but that was the case March 12 for bareback rider Wyatt Denny. No stranger to the winner's circle, Denny made a splash in the desert at the Parada del Sol Rodeo in Scottsdale, Ariz., winning with an 83-point ride on Salt River Rodeo Company's Captain Hook. The rodeo concluded March 13. Originally not entered, Denny's spring rodeo itinerary changed lastminute when he entered as a walkup replacement. He bought a plane ticket, matched up with the horse and rode to a win. "Captain Hook is a really good horse, a good campaigner and one that you can bet is always a winner," said Denny, 26. Denny had a feeling if he could ride Captain Hook, he could win the round. His hunch proved to be correct. He added $1,321 to his 2022 earnings and good momentum. For every good comeback story, there needs to be a setback. In rodeo, especially the roughstock side, contestants are no strangers to physical setbacks. After hip surgery and having to miss basically the entire 2020 season, the 2015 PRCA Resistol Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year said he's never felt better. "This year, ever since I started doing Doug (Champion's) workout program, I feel like I'm back 110%," he said.

In terms of goals, Denny said he's vying for another NFR bid. He qualified for the NFR in 2016-18. "Always set your goals high," Denny said. "That way if you miss them, you're going to end up where you need to be anyways." Of course, the bright lights of Las Vegas are kept in mind, but Denny prefers to keep his thoughts on the present. "I just try to focus on that one horse, that one ride at a time and focus on the moment," he said. "It's simple if you keep it simple." Other winners at the $67,856 rodeo were steer wrestlers Blake Knowles and Brock Powell (4.1 seconds); team ropers Audon Lutz/Clint Groff (4.7 seconds); saddle bronc rider Clayson Hutchings (79.5 points on Salt River Rodeo's Taos Timebomb); tie-down roper Bryce Derrer (7.8 seconds); barrel racer Megan McLeod-Sprague (17.47 seconds); and bull rider Hunter Kelly (85 points on Honeycutt Rodeo's Hillbilly Jitterbug).

The Run for a Million Partners with NRCHA

This August 17-20, in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Run For A Million turns up the reined cow horse heat to not only include the open Cow Horse Challenge but also showcase the roots of reined cow horse with a Cowboy Invitational.

“The cow horse was a fanfavorite at The Run For A Million in 2021,” said Taylor Sheridan, producer of The Run For A Million. “In 2022 we’ll be doubling down on cow horse, bringing you the very best NRCHA bridle horses and professionals in the Cow Horse Challenge, and some of the best hands from America’s biggest ranches in the Cowboy Invitational.” For the 2022 Cow Horse Challenge, which is expected to boast at least equal added money to the 2021 event, riders will have the opportunity to qualify at one of two qualifiers NRCHA will host on behalf of The Run For A Million. These qualifiers will be run concurrently with the Open Bridle classes at the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada, in March and the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale, Arizona, in June. The qualifier events will be an add-on to the Open Bridle and will have a $1,000 entry fee with $5,000 added money from The Run For A Million at each. The top 8 riders at each event will earn an invitation to The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge, plus a custom qualifier knife from Gist Silversmiths, an NRCHA Corporate Partner, courtesy of The Run For A Million. At these events it is the rider who earns the qualification, not the horse. Each rider can qualify only once, and does not need to show at The Run For A Million on the same horse they rode to qualify. NRCHA will announce the rider’s picks prior to the event through its social media channels. In August, cowboys will be coming to town with the Cowboy

Invitational at The Run For A Million. Using the NRCHA Cowboy Class format, the competitors in the invitational will complete a traditional reining and cow work run, and then will come back for a second turn in the arena for steer stopping. “Reined cow horse grew into a competitive sport from the traditional Vaquero way of training a horse to work cattle on a ranch,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “The connection between our sport and the ranching traditions we grew from is alive and well. This is where we started, and this event will more than showcase how rooted cow horse still is in ranch life.” Before riding for the $25,000 in added money at The Run For A Million in Las Vegas, cowboys from some of the country’s most historic ranches will be invited to a Cowboy Clinic to freshen up their skills. The following historic ranches are among those that have been invited to send cowboys for the inaugural event. Keep and eye on NRCHA.com for updates on who will throw their hat in the ring in Las Vegas! 6666 Ranch (Guthrie, TX) Bogle Ltd. (Dexter, NM) R.A. At the event, the NRCHA will host autograph sessions with the 16 qualified Cow Horse Challenge riders and the Cowboy Invitational riders, where event attendees can get to know reined cow horse’s brightest stars and connect with our ranching roots.

BLUE STONE TWO-TIME PRCA WORLD CHAMPION BULL RIDER PASSES AWAY AT 43

By Tracy Renck, PSN Editor

are around world champions day-in and day-out, you're either going to get better or you're going to go home." Bull rider Fred Boettcher, a six-time NFR qualifier, including 2001, also had high praise for Stone. "Blue came on the scene and won two world titles and it was like where in the heck did he come from?" Boettcher said. "He rode with a lot of pain and was very talented and this hits like a ton of bricks because he and I are around the same age. A guy like him isn't supposed to be dying right now. He was a great bull rider and the coolest cat who just showed up and did his job. He didn't brag. When I showed up at the NFR in 2001, I didn't even know who he was, and he kicked all our butts." Stone was the first cowboy to win back-to-back PRCA Bull Riding World Championships since Don Gay won three world titles in a row from 1979-81. Stone shares the NFR Round 1 bull riding record with Gay.

Blue Stone, who won PRCA Bull Riding World Championships in 2001 and 2002, passed away March 13 in Willard, Utah. He was 43.

Stone, who was born May 26, 1978, in Ogden, Utah, earned his first world championship by earning $174,772 to edge Cody Hancock by less than $10,000. He followed that up in 2002 by earning $157,707 and edged Myron Duarte by less than $9,000. Those were the only two appearances Stone made at the NFR. "Blue was like Sage Kimzey, the bigger the stage, the better he rode," Duarte said. "Blue was a competitor and he brought me to my best level, and he made everybody's game better. That's what world champions do. When you 84

NRHA Derby June 15-26th in Oklahoma City The 2021 6666 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel was a tremendous success by all measurements. The highest payout, plus the largest number of entries and stalls, resulted in a record-breaking mega-event. It also created real challenges in getting so many horses shown in the allotted time. NRHA Events Manager

86

Cheryl Cody explained, “Our entries grew amazingly. We went from 249 Non Pro entries in the previous year to 302 in 2021. The Open division increased from 247 to 274. In the four days allotted for the Open and Non Pro prelims, we had 80 more entries than in 2020. That was over a 16 percent increase with 576 horses to get shown.”

APRIL 2022

She continued, “Our officials and staff were faced with more than 150 runs per day in the Non Pro prelims and nearly 140 a day in the Open. Plus, the situation in the Adequan Arena was equally challenging, with comparable GARY CARPENTER growth, so we knew we had to make changes.” Cody and NRHA Commissioner Gary Carpenter met with the Oklahoma State Fair officials, Bill Allen, Vice President, Jim Norick Arena & Equine Facilities; Jonathan Fisher, Director of Jim Norick Arena and Equine Facilities; and incoming Oklahoma State Fair Executive Vice President Kirk Slaughter to work on the problem. Through those meetings, they were able to add two days to the Derby preliminaries and three days to the Adequan Arena classes. Horses will now be allowed to move into the Derby at noon on Tuesday, June 14, and classes will begin on Wednesday, June 15, in the Adequan Arena with the first section of the American Quarter Horse Association and American Paint Horse Association classes. The show will continue through June 26. The preliminaries of the Non Pro Derby will begin on Friday, June 17, and go through Sunday, June 19. The next day signals the start of three days of Open preliminaries. Carpenter noted, “As our growth continues to amaze us in a positive sense, it also creates scheduling challenges. The State Fair staff and leadership have gone out of their way to be innovative in helping us through these record-setting shows.”

Sarah Dawson joins NRCHA Million Dollar Club

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) welcomes NRCHA professional, Sarah Dawson of Perrin, Texas, into the prestigious NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Club.

Dawson crossed the milliondollar mark following her win at the 2022 Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby in Fort Worth, Texas,

aboard Selvarey. She is one of the youngest to achieve this milestone. Her Million Dollar Rider banner was revealed during the 2022 Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions when she was named the Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby Open Champion. “To reach the million dollar mark you have to have a lot of great horses and success on a lot of different kinds of horses,” Dawson said. “As a horseman,

for me, that is much more notable than winning a single show.” When asked about the horses that have made this milestone possible, Dawson said there were two that stood out the most; Shine Smarter and Selvarey. Shine Smarter (by WR This Cats Smart) is a 2012 mare that took Dawson to her first Snaffle Bit Futurity® Open Finals and Selvarey, a 2017 mare by Dual Rey, which

Dawson thanked her husband, Chris, for helping her achieve this goal, along with all of the owners who have allowed her to ride their horses. “Chris has been so instrumental in my success,” Dawson said. “He is my biggest supporter and the best set of eyes I have on me, both in and out of the arena.” Since its inception in 2006, the NRCHA Million Dollar Club has inducted 22 riders. Emily Emerson Wins NRHA Invitational Freestyle on Give Me Starbucks

Invitational Freestyle. Sponsored by the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau, the popular event will take place on Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m. Freestyle reining has been popular at the NRHA Futurity in the past but was moved to the Derby in 2022 to give it a more prominent position. Often compared to figure skating routines, Freestyle Reining pairs the athleticism and finesse of reining moves choreographed to music, often with clever costuming and props. NRHA Professional and Executive Committee member Shane Brown said, “By being held during the Derby, the Freestyle is returning to its roots. The freestyle event was created and began at the NRHA Derby in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are happy to have it as a crowd favorite in Oklahoma City to showcase our sport.” Brown noted that the invitationonly lineup will feature some of the top freestyle performers from around the country. He said, “It should really be a showcase of entertaining performances.” Sammi Miller, NRHA Senior Director of Corporate Relations and Communications, agreed that the Freestyle has been a favorite with Oklahoma City audiences. She was quick to thank the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau for its sustained support of the event, which is often a first introduction to reining for local attendees. She said, “The OKC CVB has been very loyal to the National Reining Horse Association. We are proud that our events have a substantial economic impact and grateful that Oklahoma City continues to invest in the NRHA Futurity and Derby.”

Two couples to join the APHA Hall of Fame in 2022 By Jessica Hein Pauli and Kenny Crull of Monticello, Indiana, along with Cliff and Martha Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, will join the APHA Hall of Fame in recognition of their lasting dedication to APHA and the Paint Horse breed. The couples will be inducted at the 2022 APHA Hall of Fame & Awards Ceremony, taking place July 1 at Whiskey Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas. Read more about these newest inductees in the March/April 2022 Paint Horse Journal. Kenny and Pauli Crull found their paths intertwined with the fledgling Paint breed in the late 1960s, and it was through the

organization that they met, married and founded Crull Paint Horses in Monticello, Indiana. In addition to owning, training, showing and breeding Paints, Kenny and Pauli were APHA ambassadors, serving as APHA state directors and advisory committee members. Pauli helped found the Amateur program and was later honored as a Distinguished Service Award winner and judge emeritus. Cliff and Martha Johnson were always ready to lend a hand to help improve APHA, and some called them “the backbone of APHA in the Midwest.” The couple owned, bred and showed Paints, including APHA Hall of Famer Durn Scooter. They also helped found several regional Paint Horse clubs and served on many APHA committees; Cliff was also an APHA judge and state director. The Johnsons were previously honored as Distinguished Service Award winners.

Cesar Chavez’s Legacy in Supporting Farmworkers

An American hero, Chavez led the non-violent movement in the mid-1900s that paved the way for better wages and working conditions which nearly 2.5 million farmworkers benefit from today. A Mexican American, Chavez grew up in a farming community in Yuma, AZ in the 1930s. During the Great Depression, his family lost their ranch and moved to California as migrant workers. To help support his family, Chavez began working in the fields at the age of 11. He witnessed firsthand the injustices, indignities, and discrimination that farmworkers suffered at the hands of growers. While the newly enacted Labor Relations Act of 1935 gave employees the right to join unions to collectively address unfair labor practices, it excluded farm and domestic workers – positions predominately held by minorities. In 1952, determined to earn protections for food and farmworkers, Chavez began organizing people to advocate for the reform of labor laws, so farmworkers could have basic human rights such as safe working conditions and living wages so they can provide for their families. “It’s ironic that those who till the soil, cultivate and harvest the fruits, vegetables, and other foods that fill your tables with abundance have nothing left for themselves,” Chavez once said. A servant leader, Chavez co-founded the National Farmworkers

The BLM budget requests $153.1 million for the Wild Horse and Burro Management

Washington, D.C. — The Biden-Harris Administration today submitted to Congress the President’s Budget for fiscal year 2023. The President’s Budget details his vision to expand on the historic progress our country has made over the last year and deliver the agenda he laid out in his State of the Union address—to build a better America, reduce the deficit, reduce costs for families, and grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out. The Biden-Harris Administration has proposed $1.6 billion for the Bureau of Land Management for fiscal year 2023 to meet a multitude of challenges, from addressing the climate crisis to strengthening the Bureau’s core capacity to deliver for the American people. The proposal is carefully designed to help ensure access for all Americans to the public lands, while also maintaining the Bureau’s multiple use and sustained yield mission that supports energy production, livestock and agriculture, wildlife conservation, watershed protection, and recreation.

96

Association (NFWA) in 1962, which fought to empower farmworkers to advocate for social justice reforms and respect in their workplace – the fields. NFWA later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers of America (UFW), which continues to protect the interest of food and farmworkers. Huelga! Huelga! Huelga! Workers defiantly chanted “strike” in Spanish on picket lines along California’s farming communities in 1965. Chavez galvanized the efforts of Mexican American and Filipino American farmworkers to push for industry change. The workers collectively refused to pick grapes in the region. During their five-year strike, Chavez would organize a 250-mile march to the state capital of Sacramento to bring public awareness to the mistreatment of farmworkers. Despite the physical abuse of protesters at the hands of growers and law enforcement, Chavez persuaded organizers to abstain from violence by going on a 25-day hunger strike. Chavez said “Being of service is not enough. You must become a servant of the people. When you do, you can demand their commitment in return.” A nationwide consumer boycott of grapes followed, crippling the industry, and forcing growers to negotiate with organizers. In 1970, the growers agreed to higher pay, to protect farmworkers against The budget makes critical investments in the American people that will help lay a stronger foundation for shared growth and prosperity for generations to come. The proposed 2023 budget is an increase of $238 million above the fiscal year 2022 Continuing Resolution and includes significant investments to address the climate crisis and accelerate clean energy development to reach the goal of permitting 25 gigawatts of renewable energy on public lands by 2025. “President Biden has proposed an important blueprint for our country’s future that reflects the importance of science, equity and collaboration in carrying out Interior’s important missions,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. Wild Horses and Burros - The budget requests $153.1 million for the Wild Horse and Burro Management program. The current estimated population of over 86,000 animals is more than three times greater than the carrying capacity of BLM-managed public lands, undermining the health of public rangelands and adversely affecting other uses of the lands and the species that depend on them. Combating the Climate Crisis - The budget request includes approximately $665 million to improve the resiliency and adaptability of BLM-managed lands to climate change and other stressors. The request also includes $12 million to support the Civilian Climate Corps, leveraging the skills of young adults and veterans to improve public lands and provide a pathway to good-paying jobs. Diversity and Inclusion - The BLM is pursuing a comprehensive approach to advance equity for all. The request includes $960,000 to support the Department-wide Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility initiative to address high-priority needs and to ensure we work to create an agency that is open to all Americans. The Bureau will continue to improve the visitor experience on public lands by addressing infrastructure and maintenance needs. The BLM will implement $95 million of mandatory funding provided through the Great American Outdoors Act to significantly reduce and restructure its longdeferred maintenance backlog to support public safety, visitor access, and enjoyment of our public lands.

The latest updates on the EHV-1 outbreak in California from the Equine Disease Communication Center

According to the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), it is currently monitoring the Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) outbreaks that have been reported in a number of counties in California.1 EHV-1 usually causes a mild and selflimiting respiratory disease. However, in rare cases, EHV-1 (and EHV-4) can cause equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM), a neurologic disease that affects the spinal cord and is potentially fatal.2 San Mateo County In total, 26 horses have been confirmed positive in this region. Three EHM cases (EHV-1 positive with neurologic signs) and 23

EHV-1 fever-only cases have been confirmed. Riverside County A second outbreak in California is associated with the Desert International Horse Show. To date, 21 horses have been confirmed positive. Three are confirmed EHM cases and 18 are confirmed EHV-1 fever-only cases associated with this incident. Orange County Two horses have been confirmed positive in this county. A 16-year-old Warmblood mare in Orange County displaying neurologic signs on February 22, 2022 was confirmed positive for EHM secondary to EHV-1 on February 24, 2022.

Jordan Halvorsen star of Netflix’s “How to be A Cowboy” hopes to use PBR Team Series Combine as springboard to success

By Darci Miller

When Jorden Halvorsen was growing up in Youngsville, North Carolina, she took figure skating lessons and rode hunter jumper horses – hobbies fairly typical of a young girl. But when she was 17, her horse trainer asked a question that would change her life. “Do you want to ride a bull?” “Um, why would we do that?” Halvorsen asked. “Well, how many people do you know that have ridden a bull?” the trainer replied. “We can at least say we did it and marked it off our bucket list.” Halvorsen, who had ridden all her naughty ponies and horses and even trained her own pony when she was 9, was used to getting bucked off and agreed. What’s one more crazy experience? So she forged her parents’ signatures and went to a practice pen to try her hand. “I went, fell off really fast off this bull named Snowball, and I was like, ‘Man, I know I can stay on longer than that,’” Halvorsen, now 26, said. “It happened kind of casually. I just kind of kept going back to this same practice pen every weekend trying to improve my time on that one bull, and then they were like, ‘Well, why don’t you try getting on another bull?’ “It just kind of went into this snowball effect, and it happened to start with a bull named Snowball.” Fast forward nine years, and Halvorsen is one of the most prominent female bull riders in the world. After appearing on the Netflix show How to Be a Cowboy, she has almost 100,000 followers on Instagram and says she’s recognized out in public. But that was no Hollywood gimmick. Halvorsen was on the show as the very real intern for Dale Brisby at his ranch in Texas and accepted the internship not quite realizing what she was getting herself into. She went purely to work hard, learn, and improve in all facets of the Western sports industry. “It honestly has set me up to really excel my bull riding, being at the spot,” Halvorsen said. “Dale’s a really great person. He’s really been able to help me with my bull riding. I took a year off last year due to some injuries, and so his place has really set me up for having a great comeback and really being able to pursue my passion for bull riding on all levels of it, including the stock contractor side to the ranching side to having a cow/calf operation

102

to being able to actually get on practice bulls during work. So it’s changed my life as in it’s helped me improve where I wanted to go with my bull riding and my ranching.” Recently, Halvorsen’s agent told her about the PBR Team Series Combine being held at the PBR Sport Performance Center in Pueblo, Colorado. She was intrigued, so earlier this month, she headed out to Pueblo to see what it was about. Halvorsen was a bit hesitant as she’s only been riding for two months since taking a year off and didn’t want to push herself too far, attempting better bulls than she was ready for. “I just put that all aside, and I went out there and rode a pretty good little bull, turned back to the left, and I rode him,” she said. “That made me feel good, and it made me feel like I actually belong there. And so my takeaway was that this is something that I can do. If I put everything into it, there’s absolutely no reason why I can’t be here.” While Halvorsen is thinking about declaring for the PBR Team Series draft on May 23, her ultimate goal at the combine was to gauge where she’s at. “One of my goals, when I really got to digest what was going on, to get out of it was to see where I was, physically, mentally, emotionally, compared to some of the other guys that are at the top level,” she said. “Being able to see what I need to work on in comparison. Do I need to work on my grip strength? Or do I need to be working more on my core? And stuff like that. That’s what I wanted to get out of it: to see where I can better improve myself, even if I don’t decide to declare for Teams, but just to be a better bull rider for years to come.” Halvorsen also hopes to elevate women’s bull riding overall. She competes with the Women’s Bull Riding Organization and wants to be the rising tide that lifts all boats. “I’m going to take what I’ve learned at the combine to get other girls on board,” she said. “I’m hoping that if I can show them the stuff that these guys are doing at the professional level, then we can work our way up to getting on the same stuff or close to the same stuff as they are. We might not ever be able to ride the rankest bulls. I get that. But we can at least get on pretty decent bulls and work our way up to that, and then be able to promote ourselves through our association that we have now.”

NRHA Year-end Statistics

Money won at NRHA events worldwide hit an all-time high in 2021 at $19,157,953, as did added money at $12,621,353. Total annual entries, at 112,929, were also the highest ever. The number of shows recovered last year, as well, after a drop of more than 50 percent in the number of events in 2020 at the peak of the COVID restraints.

As far as entries, both ends of the spectrum, from entry level Ride & Slide classes to aged events, set records in 2021. With the all-time high of 10,465 entries in entry level classes to the recordbreaking 28,959 entries in Aged Events – Categories 2 and 6, the growth was overwhelmingly positive. The number of unique horses shown, 10,211, was also the highest in the past five years.

Membership numbers tend to correlate to the amount of people showing, so it was not surprising that NRHA membership numbers fell off in 2020 when there were fewer events to attend. But the indomitable spirit of reiners showed in the 10+ percent upwards recovery in 2021. The number of NRHA professionals was at the highest in ever, at 1,833, and Non Pro numbers were the highest in the last three years, with 8,841 Non Pro members. At the NRHA produced shows, the news was overwhelmingly positive in 2021. The 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel was a record-breaker in number of entries, number of stalls, added money, and payout. The Four Sixes Ranch was joined by Yellowstone and Bosque Ranch in naming the event and along with Markel, the Story Book Stables Amateur Derby, the Tamarack Ranch Open 4-Year-Old Stakes, the GlycoGuard Novice Horse Derby, and the Colston Paving Inc. Non Pro 4-YearOld Stakes headlined the variety of opportunities for reiners. The 2021 NRHA Futurity paid a record $350,000 to L4 Champion Casey Deary on Ten Thirty, thanks to the efforts of the Futurity Challenge Sponsors and increased commitment from the Association. The show also boasted a 16 percent increase in total entries and paid out a record $2,668,910 – more than $400,000 above the previous year The NRHA Markel Futurity Sales were once again held on Thursday of Futurity week for an all-in-one-day sale spectacular. The event boasted the second-highest net income in history with $4.9 million in horses sold. Another key function that takes place during the Futurity, the Reining Horse Foundation Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch, set attendance and fundraising records.

Veterinary researchers discovered a molecule able to prevent COVID illness prior to exposure

A nasal-spray treatment developed by a virologist at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine may help prevent COVID illness in humans, as well as reduce severity of and mortality from post-infection.

Working with experimental mice engineered with human receptors for the coronavirus on their cell surfaces, researchers have identified a new molecule (N-0385) they say inhibits entry of the virus into cells in the body. The molecule, Cornell reports, could be sprayed into people’s noses to prevent COVID illness prior to exposure and provide early treatment if administered soon after infection. Indeed, N-0385, which was developed at Cornell in collaboration with investigators at the Université de Sherbrooke in Canada, was shown to protect mice from infection prior to exposure, while also providing effective treatment when administered up to 12 hours after exposure. “There are very few, if any, small molecule antivirals that have been discovered that work prophylactically to prevent infection,” says the study’s senior author, Hector Aguilar-Carreno, PhD, MS, an associate professor of virology at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. 106

Buster Welch Ranches Complete Dispersal Part of the Triangle Spring Sale

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA— The upcoming Triangle Spring Sale will include a complete dispersal of the last remaining horses bred and raised by legendary horseman and rancher, Buster Welch. The event is scheduled for April 29-30 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City and will begin Friday with a sale preview and continue throughout the day Saturday, featuring the Welch Dispersal. All of the Welch dispersal horses will feature the bloodlines of Peppy San Badger (Mr San Peppy x Sugar Badger by Grey Badger III), known as “Little Peppy,” which carried Welch to the 1977 NCHA Futurity Championship and later became an all-time Leading Sire. The covering sire for the broodmares selling is NCHA Futurity Champion, Metallic Rey Mink. The horses will be consigned by Welch’s granddaughter Amy Welch King and her husband, trainer Josh King, of Baird, Texas. The group of horses are the last in a line of stock Welch cultivated from his time as trainer and breeding consultant for King Ranch and as a West Texas horse and cattle rancher. Welch, who will be 94 in May, holds the record for the most NCHA World Champion Futurity titles with five wins from 1962 (the first NCHA Futurity), 1963, 1966, 1971 and 1977. He also won four NCHA World Championship titles in 1954, 1956, 1974 and 1976. He is part of the NCHA Hall of Fame and American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, among others.

Nathan Piper Surpasses $1 Million in NRHA Earnings It was nearly three decades ago that Nathan Piper showed for the first time in a National Reining Horse Association-sanctioned event. He and Faith Dry Doc topped the Youth 14–18 class at a Texas Reining Horse Association show, and the scene was set for a career that would take him to the highest levels of reining competition. In mid-March 2022, Piper surpassed a career milestone, becoming an NRHA Million Dollar Rider after a great week at the Cactus Reining Classic. On hand for the important moment? Several members of his family. “I knew I was getting close at the end of last year, and that it would just depend on how shows went. My mom, dad, sister, brotherin-law, and their two kids wanted to be there. They came to the NRHA Futurity in case it happened there, and then went again to the Winter Slide in Ardmore,” Piper explained. “I won about $1,400 there, and we were counting it down.” Piper didn’t expect his family to show up for the Cactus Reining Classic, but they traveled West for the event. “They drove all the way out to Arizona for it, so it was pretty special,” he shared. Piper, of Whitesboro, Texas, secured the necessary earnings aboard Patriot (Smart Spook x Dunit A Lil Ruf), owned by Shannon and Hershel Reid. The pair finished third in the Run For A Million qualifier, took third in the Level 4 Open Derby, and won the Level 3 Open Derby Championship. “To finish the first million with a run like that on Patriot was just icing on the cake. He’s one of a kind,” Piper said. “Becoming a Million Dollar Rider is definitely one of the major goals I’ve had. I remember when Bill Horn first won a million, and how much I looked up to him for that.” It was because of Piper’s sister, Lauren, that he first began riding horses. “My sister wanted a pony when I was a kid, so we got into 4-H and begin showing horses. We saw reining, and I got a ‘kind of’ reining horse, and have been hooked ever since,” Piper recalled.

114

As a teenager, Piper would go spend time in Marietta, Oklahoma with James Davidson and legendary horseman and NRHA Hall of Famer Dick Pieper to hone his skills. He then went to college at Texas A & M University to pursue a degree in Animal Science and continued to train horses on the side. It was at A & M that he met his future wife, Jean. “She’s the love of my life and the one who convinced me I could do this for a living. Other people had insisted I needed to pursue a ‘real job,’ but she encouraged me to just do it,” he said. “There have been a lot of ups and downs, and it’s a hard business to break into, but the good Lord kept picking us up, and setting us on the right path. Jean never gave up on me or this dream through it all.” Piper isn’t one to rest on his laurels, and he’s already looking forward to earning the next million. He’d also like to help a special horse become even more successful. “My next big goal is to get Patriot over $500,000 in earnings,” he said of the stallion.

NCHA ANNOUNCES AQHA LEADING SIRE AND DAM AWARD RECIPIENTS

FORT WORTH – The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) announces Metallic Cat, Junie Wood, and Metallic Rebel as the recipients of the 2021 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Leading Sire, Leading Dam, and Leading Freshman Sire awards, respectively. “The growth our cutting industry has seen over the years is largely due to our stallion owners and breeders,” NCHA Executive Director Jay Winborn said. “Their commitment to developing the next generation of champions will only propel the legacy of the cutting horse into the future.” Each year the leading cutting horse sire and dam awards are presented to the sire, dam, and freshman sire whose AQHA offspring have the most earnings within the NCHA point year.

METALLIC CAT

Metallic Cat, owned by the Rocking P Ranch, earned the Leading AQHA Cutting Sire award with over $7.6 million in offspring earnings. This is the sixth consecutive year that the 17-year-old stallion has earned this award. The Leading AQHA Cutting Dam title went to Slate River Ranch’s Junie Wood, whose offspring earned over $339,605 in the show pen in 2021. Her daughter, Janie Wood, sired by Stevie Rey Von, claimed the 2021 NCHA Futurity Open Champion title with a 230. Metallic Rebel, owned by Thomas Guinn, secured his title as Leading AQHA Freshman Cutting Sire with his first foal crop earning nearly $484,000 last year. During Metallic Rebel’s show career, he surpassed $411,000 in NCHA lifetime earnings. “AQHA is proud to partner with the NCHA to recognize the recipients of the 2021 NCHA AQHA sire, dam and freshman sire awards,” AQHA Registrar Tammy Canida said. “The American Quarter Horse is the world’s most versatile horse and excels in the discipline of cutting because of its athleticism, talent and true grit. The legacy of the American Quarter Horse lies in the efforts of breeders and the bloodlines they preserve through their hard work and dedication. These awards reflect the effort in place to continue that legacy, while also maintaining the integrity of the breed.”

Mexico earned the series title when the North and Central America and Caribbean division of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ series last took place in 2019. In front of a home crowd at Coapexpan in Xalapa (MEX), the home squad set the tone for a strong 2022 season with a statement victory over Canada and the United States. Led by newly appointed Chef d'Equipe Mark Laskin, the veteran squad of Nicolas Pizarro (Pia Contra), Federico Fernandez (Romeo), Patricio Pasquel (Babel) and Manuel Gonzalez Dufrane (Hortensia van de Leeuwerk) established a commanding three-rail lead in the first round with a perfect "0" score thanks to clear efforts from Fernandez, Pasquel and Gonzalez Dufrane. They finished things off with two rails in hand on a final score of 12. "I've been very impressed with the Mexican riders. I have a lot of depth and a lot of riders for us to select from. Obviously, my idea was to really start things off with a bang, and I think we accomplished that." Chef d'Equipe Mark Laskin (MEX) It was not quite as smooth of sailing for the United States, as a young American squad was shockingly eliminated in the first round, and with no drop score, every rail counted for Canada, who sat on 12 faults entering Round 2.

APHA/IEA partnership secures IEA Western Nationals at the By Jessica Hein World Show through 2025 The American Paint Horse Association and the Interscholastic Equestrian Association have expanded their partnership to help reach more competitive equine enthusiasts age 9–19 across North America.

The continued affiliation helps APHA and IEA bring more Youth riders into their folds, while also showcasing the organizations on a national stage via the co-hosted IEA Western National Finals at the APHA World Championship Show. Details of the partnership expansion include: IEA Western National Finals hosted at the APHA World Championship Show for 2023 and 2024, with an option for 2025 Most Valuable Paint award at IEA National Finals events (huntseat, Western and dressage) 10% IEA membership discount for first-time coaches who are APHA members

“This partnership allows APHA to showcase our breed to a large group of Youth exhibitors, and for IEA to expose their fantastic competitions to Paint Horse members,” APHA Senior Director of Judges, Shows & Education David Dellin said. “This is an important example of APHA’s commitment to the future,” APHA Executive Director Billy Smith said. “Along with hundreds of thousands of dollars paid out each year in scholarships, our relationship with IEA is the gold standard for Youth development.” Last year was the first in which IEA’s Western National Finals took place at the APHA World Show. The event takes place in Pennsylvania for 2022 in celebration of IEA’s 20th anniversary, and then returns to the APHA World Show in 2023. “APHA has been very generous and welcoming, and we look forward to expanding our relationship as well as developing educational opportunities through APHA’s interactive learning platform, HorseIQ,” IEA Executive Director Roxane Durant said.

Equine Disease Communication Center awarded federal grant to increase biosecurity awareness, mitigate spread of infectious disease The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) working with the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has been awarded a cooperative agreement from USDA-APHIS National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP) for $176,960. According to an organizational release, the federal grant is for increasing awareness of biosecurity and helping prevent the spread of infectious diseases in horses.

The EDCC says it will utilize NADPRP funding to develop tools to “improve disease recognition and practical biosecurity while communicating the importance of biosecurity to all horse industry constituents.” One of the projects the EDCC says it will work toward is creating user-friendly biosecurity information and procedures for distribution throughout the horse community. The EDCC also plans to provide ongoing sources of continuing education for distribution by veterinarians to their clients. In addition, the organization will work to assess the industry’s current level of equine biosecurity knowledge via a survey of horse owners and veterinarians. “Dealing with COVID-19 has highlighted the need for biosecurity procedures to reduce risk of infection; however, most horse owners are still not fully aware of the threat to their horses from both endemic and foreign animal diseases either at home or when 120

traveling,” said Nathaniel A. White II, DVM, MS, DACVS, EDCC director. “We need to understand the gaps in biosecurity knowledge. Armed with that information, we will create specific plans for facilities and events, enabling the industry to react to domestic and foreign disease threats,” he continued. The EDCC says its goal is for all facets of the horse industry (owners, producers, veterinarians, and allied industry) to benefit from the continuing education information and biosecurity templates created during this project. White and Katie McDaniel, EDCC’s communication manager, will work with the AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee to create “how-to” plans and resources that will be available on the EDCC website. These tools will help owners and veterinarians decrease disease risks during horse shows, events, race meets, breeding operations, pleasure horse activities, and travel. Infographic designs for signage, visual aids, and presentations will be made available through the EDCC, supporting member organizations and allied companies. “This is the first NADPRP grant awarded for an equine-focused project,” said Katie Flynn, DVM, and Kentucky State Veterinarian. “This is exciting news for the equine industry as the funding will dedicate resources to advancing biosecurity within the equine community. Promoting everyday biosecurity will have significant benefit to the health and welfare of our horses as well as ensuring the economic health of the industry.”
