Teton Ridge, a multi-platform, wholly American-owned media company, is devoted to the iconic American west and western performance sports. Teton Ridge is proud to continue their support of Taylor Sheridan, his efforts in western performance sports and Teton Ridge’s elite roster of athletes – Andrea Fappani, Corey Cushing, and Todd Bergen – who are competing in the event. Teton Ridge is also committed to the breeding and preservation of some of the world’s greatest bloodlines of performance Quarter Horse for the continuation of athleticism and top performance in western equine sports.
“When I was looking at [the cowboy invitational] this year, I noticed there wasn’t any money allocated for the cowboys, so I called up Taylor [Sheridan, producer] and said, ‘We’d love to give the cowboys something to compete for,’” Knowles said. “For us, with the preservation of the American cowboy and the traditions and horsemanship, it’s really a natural extension of what we believe in and what we’re all Foundedabout.”in1885 in the Texas Panhandle, the XIT Ranch at its peak spanned over three million acres and was once considered the largest cattle ranch in the world. Knowles, who is the third-great-grandson of one of its original owners, operates the current XIT Ranch out of La Veta, Colorado. The ranch is involved in the NRCHA as owners, breeders and sponsors.“ForThe Run For A Million to have reining and cow horse, and now the Cowboy Invitational, it just speaks volumes to the resurgence in the Western way of life and the global interest of Western sports,” Knowles added. “I think that in this day and age, there’s a rekindling of the romantic idea of the Western way of life. To add in the heritage ranches, which are the epitome of the Western way of life, is just the perfect way for The Run For A Million to further develop as an event.”
The 11 invited ranches are: 6666 Ranch (Guthrie, TX), Bogle Ltd. (Dexter, NM), King Ranch (Kingsville, TX), Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company (Guthrie, TX), R.A. Brown Ranch (Throckmorton, TX), San Lucas Ranch (Santa Ynez, CA), Singleton Ranches (Lamy, NM), Stuart Ranch (Caddo, OK), Tongue River Ranch (Dumont, TX), Waggoner Ranch (Vernon, TX), Wagonhound Land & Livestock (Douglas, WY) The 2022 TRFAM will be held Aug. 17-20 at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas. Prior to the competition, the Cowboy Invitational ranches will be invited to participate in a cowboy clinic at the 6666 Ranch in June to help their cowboys get ready for the big stage in Las Vegas. The Run for a Million, reining’s richest event, is excited to announce Teton Ridge’s return in 2022 as presenting sponsor. “We are very pleased to be working with Teton Ridge again this year Our goals align with the preservation and promotion of the western lifestyle and traditions. The support we have received from Teton Ridge has enabled us to expand this event in many ways. Offering additional prize money and performances. We look forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come,” said Amanda Brumley, Brumley Management Group, Co-Producer of the event.

The Run For A Million (TRFAM) may be reining’s richest event, but after the success of last year’s $150,000 Cow Horse Challenge, held during TRFAM, it’s clear fans want to see even more of the Western way of life. This year, TRFAM will host the $25,000 Cowboy Invitational, allowing cowboys from some of the country’s most historic ranches to show off their horsemanship skills. Eleven ranches have been invited to each send a cowboy to compete in the Cowboy Invitational. Some of the ranches chosen are American Quarter Horse Association Best Remuda Award winners, meaning they not only have significant livestock operations, but also prominent horse breeding programs. Many of the ranches are also involved in National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) competition.
“Last year was a great test to see how the cow horse would complement The Run For A Million event, and I think it proved to be a real fan favorite,” said Anna Morrison, Executive Director of the NRCHA. “To add on the Cowboy Invitational, which highlights how connected cow horse is to training traditions that are so important for ranch work and ranch life, is incredibly meaningful.”
This continues to build on Teton Ridge’s commitment to reining and reined cow horse sports, and furthers Teton Ridge’s vision of elevating western performance sports to newcomers throughout the world, helping to preserve the legacy of the western lifestyle.
“Since 2021, our commitment has deepened in the level of investment in our breeding program as well as our Team: TR athletes,” said Joe Loverro, President, Teton Ridge Sports. “Together Teton Ridge and The Run For A Million are joining forces to showcase working western sports to an ever-growing audience.”
The Cowboy Invitational will follow the NRCHA’s cowboy class format, designed for working ranch cowboys that are wanting to venture into the competitive arena. Competitors will complete a reining and cow work run, then return to the arena for a modified steer stopping run Thanks to inaugural sponsor XIT Ranch, these competitors will have a chance at $25,000 in prize money. With its long history rooted in ranching and the Western lifestyle, XIT Ranch’s owner Drew Knowles stepped up to sponsor what he thought was a good fit for their operation.
The Run For A Million Inaugural $25,000 Cowboy Invitational Presented By XIT Ranch
TRFAM tickets can be purchased here. The events on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning are free to the public. Friday evening’s $170,000 Cow Horse Challenge presented by Teton Ridge and $30,000 Cowboy Invitational presented by XIT Ranch are ticketed, as are Saturday night’s Bull Fighters Only Fight for $50,000 and $1,000,000 Run For A Million Competition.

Q - Yellowstone – did you expect it to be as big a hit as the series has become? A - I knew from the beginning that it had the potential, it relied upon my execution. It relied upon a lot of things, but yes, I did. I knew it had the potential to be the biggest thing on TV, and it is, now. But what happened over the past two years, our numbers after Season 3 were a massive 10.5 million viewers worldwide with the season finale. But then what happened was COVID. Then all of the city kids found it. They discovered it in New York, in L.A. and it became hip to be a cowboy again. Which was the goal. But now it has become such a juggernaut. Season 4 of Yellowstone is the most purchased show of any TV show on iTunes! Those were preorders. I feel like, there is no telling what the numbers will be for Season 5. I am really anxious to see. Real curious to see. The goal was to have it bigger than the “Who shot JR on Dallas.”
Q - When you wrote the part of Rip, did you realize going into it he would galvanize such a large fan base? A - No. I knew the character was iconic, and sort of this throwback to the black hat with the good heart. I did not even know at the time that I was going to write this romance between Rip and Beth that seems to have just enamored the audience. I had this unique opportunity to avoid all of the cliches that we see in these romances and let these two hideously flawed people be the perfect couple. It has been a lot of fun to explore that. ‘ Q - I think that everyone can relate to being flawed and still find the that perfect someone else that is flawed, can they?A - 100%, I mean show me the perfect person.
Q - Why did Kevin Costner support you in playing John Dutton? A - He was really intrigued by this world. When he read the script, he really responded to it. This is a genre he is familiar with. He has done a few Westerns, and he was fortunate that all of the Westerns he was in were very well done. A couple of them, he directed himself. He enjoys this world, and thru this lens. He had never seen something about a modern-day ranch, albeit highly dramatized and fictionalized, but he had never seen this world presented this way before. He splits his time between California, and he has a ranch in Colorado, so it is a world that he knows. He also wanted to be a part of something like this that was physical. We were very excited to have him. We had met before and had tried to find a couple of projects to do together. When I sent him this script, and he read it, he was in.
Q - Cole Hauser had not worked with you prior - Why did you choose Cole Hauser for the part? A - No, but I was a big admirer of his work for a long time. He is a big guy, but there is also a quiet intensity to him that perfect for the character. I did not even read him for it, I just offered it to him. When I told him about the part, he wanted to do it.
In my business, which is largely dominated by people that have come from two places, and both are these massive urban areas. Many times, they say that “The Western is dead,” but it’s dead because people do not know that World. Its authenticity is the most important element of it and the audience knows when it is fake. Even an audience that is not made up of equine enthusiasts, they still know. I strive to make everything real. I figure if it looks real, it will be dramatic. I don’t try to make things look dramatic; I try to make things look real. That is the reason I spend so much time with these actors at what I call Cowboy Camp. They are on horseback 8 hours a day, and we are trying to get them as comfortable as possible, so I can utilize them to do things on horseback. The more comfortable they are, the more I can film it, the more that I can show the World.

28 AUGUST 2022 TAYLOR
A - The journey was so difficult. I had met my wife, and we had fallen in love, and we were moving to Wyoming. I was trying to buy this little place in Wyoming when I was renegotiating my deal with Sons of Anarchy for Season 3, and they offered me really poor money. Like not enough to be able to buy a $300,000 house in Star Valley, Wyoming. They said, “Look, you are right.” I still remember when their attorney said, “You do deserve more, but we are not going to pay you more because we don’t have to. You are just a Journeyman, that is all you are ever going to be. So, take your licks and be quiet”. I realized right then that they are right, and how can I raise my son in this town and tell him he could be whatever he wants to be, but I am going to miss his Soccer practice because I am going to a Windex commercial audition, or whatever the case may be. So, I decided I was done telling other people’s stories, I was going to tell my own, and I quit and started writing. It was two years before I sold a script, and we were down to our last nickel. In fact, I had gotten a job up in Wyoming at the headwaters of Grovont as the wrangler to wrangle all of the horses for this Dude ranch. They didn’t allow kids in the employee housing, so my wife and my baby were going to have to stay in a trailer park in Pinedale. Which, as you can image, none of us were happy about. We were pretty desperate, so I sold all of my horses, we got moved out of our house and into a crummy apartment. My wife took jobs, and I took any job that I could get, as far as anything! Mow lawns, do anything. I taught acting classes, I did everything I could and then finally I sold “Hell or High Water”. The day it sold I had $800.00 in my bank account and rent was coming up. Q - You really did it, looking back on that time, and knowing that you said how you would write your way out of trouble, it sounded rather far-fetched, Hollywood is so tough – and you’ve done it now over, and over. Back then, what did you think your chances were of hitting it big? A - What I believed was what I had worked for as an actor. I had read, I don’t know how many scripts over my career, 500 or a 1,000? I could not remember 5 that were great stories. Now, I wasn’t Brad Pitt, so I wasn’t getting the scripts he was reading, but I sat down one day and said, “I have no idea how to do this, but I know how not to do it. Because I have been reading bad scripts my entire career”. So, I decided to tell a story about something I cared about. To be honest, to be very disciplined and economical, don’t explain things with the dialogue, explain things with the vista of what I am seeing and then just let the characters talk about it. It is really that simple. Hell or High Water for me, was a story about where I lived in West Texas as a kid. It was on fire, everybody was selling everything they had, as far as horses and cattle because there was no food. All the auction houses even closed down. They would not even take any more cattle. It was watching this way of life, that seemed like a constant to me die. So, Hell or High Water was for the love of Texas, and an homage to a way of life that seemed like it was disappearing.
Q - The first season of Y:1883 aired right after Yellowstone, and Mayor of Kingstown with Jeremy Renner, truly one of my favorite actors, right after Yellowstone. A real double, doubleheader! Wow, imagine the pressure as an artist, producer, and businessman-
Continued on page 30
Q - Back then it was tough times for you making it in LA on the acting pay from Sons of Anarchy – and you walked away and really struggled. Then, boom you hit it big! Biggest swing for anyone we’ve ever seen, the real comeback-kid story American’s love. How does that make you feel?
29AUGUST 2022
A - I grew up on a ranch and rode my whole life. The funny thing is, I didn’t really like it that much when I was a kid. We had to do it. I worked on some ranches during the Summers, and you know, when you are 14, 16, 18 years old and getting a horse job is not that exciting. When I graduated from High School, I don’t know that I got on a horse again until I was in my late 20’s, when I would go up to Wyoming. I bounced around up there, pulled some pack trips, and again, it was a job. It wasn’t really until I discovered Reining that I really fell in love with it, the riding. I enjoyed the horses, but it was Reining that made me fall in love with the horses.
Q - When we first meet at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, back in 2010, you were the best on horseback of any of the celebrities that rode there. How did you learn to ride?
30 AUGUST 2022 TAYLOR SHERIDAN INTERVIEW from page 29
A - It is very possible, yes. If I can figure out the story. It must benefit the Ranch and it has to benefit the audience. I have no idea what it will be about, look I had no idea what 1883 would be about until it came to me! The Network said, “We want you to do another show.” I said, “OK. “They wanted to do a spin-off of Yellowstone, and I did not want to do a spin-off. I said, “Look, let me do the origins story. If we do the story of these folks going West, that is an interesting story! Let’s tell that story.” So, that is what we did. I told them that, and they bought it! Then they called and asked, “When are we getting the script?” I said, I don’t know, I haven’t figured it out yet. I can’t write it until I know what it is! Then one day it hit me. I was actually talking with Sam Elliott and the whole thing hit me. Then I met the actress that is playing one of the leads in it, and then the structure made sense to me. Then I wrote it and that is how it is with all of my scripts. Until I understand how the thing ends, and the reason I am telling the story, I cannot begin it.
Q -You fixed all the problems with the horse showsA - I made it for the audience! I did not make it for the riders. I
Q - Yellowstone has opened the door for more Western, and equestrian exposure in movies, television, videos, movies and online. Since Paramount’s production of Urban Cowboy and CBS’s production of Dallas in 1978 (the year Bridle & Bit began), there has never been a bigger impact made in this genre of television than with Yellowstone. You’re actually shaping how people perceive our Western culture on a global scale. You are the man responsible for defining and sharing that culture. How does that make you feel? A - Well, that was the goal. Look, I was alive when Urban Cowboy came out and when Dallas was a hit. I was a kid, but I remember it. We had been wearing Cowboy hats and boots always because I lived in Texas, but then they popped up everywhere! But Urban Cowboy, even the name denotes it, it had nothing to do with Cowboy’s. It’s about a guy that is going to ride a mechanical bull in a bar in Houston. Dallas was about a rich oil family. No one had ever made a story of Cowboys; you saw it just like I did. In 2010 I was with Tom Foran, he is a good friend of mine, and the horse market and everything else just collapsed, it felt like that era was ending. I wanted to do something to revive it. If you think about horses, it is really the only sport that you can do with your kids. You can drive them to soccer, you can watch them do motor-cross, you can take your daughter to gymnastics, or dance or your kid to baseball, or whatever. But you can’t do it with them. This you can do with them! I think it is so important to have things that you can do with your family. I ride a lot of Cutting horses now, because my wife likes to show the Cutters. I said, “Ok, I’ll get a Cutter too.” My son loves to rope, so I said, “Ok, I’ll get a rope horse.” We do these things together! So, I wanted to do everything I could to show the real world and shift the wrong thinking about what a Cowboy really is to what the Western Lifestyle really is. To make it cool, not trendy, because it is cool! Nothing is cooler than going out at 4:30 in the morning and gathering 300 head of cattle. There is just nothing cooler!
A - I do it very different that anyone else does it and Paramount lets me. I don’t know how to make a TV show, I know how to make an independent movie, because that’s what I had made. What I did, was make Yellowstone like I made a movie. I wrote all the scripts and then we went and filmed it. Then I cut it together and then we aired it. By Paramount trusting me, and letting me just treat it like that, without committees and all these things and notes and whatever. They said, “Just go make it good Taylor.” Which is what I did. It streamlined the process. Mayor was quite difficult because it shot in Canada. I just keep my head down and keep working, if I look up it gets to be too daunting. So, I just keep my head down and work.
Q - The Last Cowboy Season 2 aired on CMT in November 2021. We were excited about that because it is part of what you said previously about keeping the lifestyle alive. How do you feel about that? A - It is a funny thing about that, I don’t even get paid for it really. It is such a labor of love, and it’s done exactly what I wanted it too! It has brought an excitement to the Horse Shows again. It has increased interest. Call any trainer, call anyone. I was speaking to Gary at the NRHA, call him and he is going to tell you how many more members they have now. We have more people just going to Horse Shows. Just showing up to watch. I believe it is the future, which is why I keep adding so much money to these events and getting media attention, is because the future of this is as a spectator sport. Watching The Run for A Million, and you were there too, there is not a more exciting hour of athletics on the planet!
Cynthia & Cole with Taylor & Nicole
Q - Just imagine a kid from a little town in Texas grows up to hit it big in Hollywood and comes back to buy the 6666 Ranch and you did it! Now it could be the landscape for a new series with Paramount, called the Four Sixes. Please share a little insight as to what that series could be about.
A - Well, Thank You. All I want to do is bring happiness and excitement to the Horse World. This World, for 40 years of my life, told me “No” in everything I tried to do. When I had a kid and I had a wife that believed in me, I stopped taking “No” for an answer. That does not mean that I don’t still hear it all of the time, I just do not accept it. I was determined that I was going to do something that was going to have a big impact. And look, I am lucky because I have this platform where I can continue to do it. To introduce people to the real riders. I had Todd Bergen, Bob Avila, Andrea Fappani, the entire McCutcheon and McQuay family and I worked it into the story, and we do a lot more of it in Season 4 of Yellowstone. I really show the World what is like to be a Cowboy and I really show the World what the Horse Show life is. Because now that I know that the audience really, really likes that, I am feeding them more and more and more of it.
A - Well, thank you Tracy. Sometimes it is better to be lucky that good! I just recognized there was an opportunity, I had a window and I jumped through it. And then, everyone jumped with me. People have tried this before; I am not the first person to try this. Everyone got on board, and everyone trusted and supported me and as a result we have this great thing. The goal is never to make money with The Run for A Million and when you give away 1.3 million dollars at a horse show you are not going to make any money! I am not trying too either. What it pays me in satisfaction to see an industry reenergized, and with so many new people coming into the sport, to all of the equine sports, that was my goal. That was the goal with The Run for A Million and it will continue to be my goal. I think the World is a better place with horses in it and people riding them. With more people riding them, the more people can set differences aside and focus on what we have in common. That is the goal.
Q - You have done so much in such a short time; I have spent 38 years promoting the horse industry and you have done more in 5 years than most in a lifetime, how does that make you feel?
Q - Last year at The Run for A Million, you added Cow Horse. With the Top 15 Cow Horse Open riders one night going down the fence, and the next night the Top Open Reining riders, all showing the best horses for a lot of prize money was one of the most exciting events ever witnessed - it was a real made for TV show just with those 2 nights - there was no live streaming of the event, folks had to go, and they knew it was going to be a real show because they trusted you - they knew that you can make a show.
31AUGUST 2022 gave the riders an opportunity to win a whole lot of money, because that’s their job! They are professional riders. But I make the horse show for the people sitting in the stands. Because at the end of the day that is what I am, I am a showman, and I am putting on a show! I also did an aged event in Cutting, it was a Derby called the Brazos Bash. It is the highest paying 4, 5, 6 and 7 year old event of the year. It had the highest attendance it ever had. And, I treated it just like I treat The Run for A Million, it was a rock concert and people had fun again. Because at the end of the day, that’s why the NonPros (who drive the business, they are the horse owners) are doing it. They are doing it because the love it! Now, for an Open rider to be successful, he has to love it too, or he is not going to want to sit on horses for 12 hours a day, haul all over the Country and sleep in hotels and be on the road all the time. The Open riders have to love to do it obviously, but it has to be an experience for the Non-Pros. The horses are too expensive, it costs too much, it takes too much time to not enjoy. My goal is to effect all of the other shows. It is going to bring more attention to the sport, it is going to bring more sponsors, it is going to bring more awareness, it is going to up the prize money everywhere, and it already has! Not just in Reining, it has happened in Cutting and the Cow Horse already. The bigger the horse shows get, the better it is for the whole industry. I have some plans that I cannot talk about yet, but it is where I am going to start getting all of these finals on television. The Networks are now noticing, and the Sponsors are watching. If you look at the PBR and what they did. They did a fantastic job of marketing the experience, the excitement of Bull Riding. Yet I still find it more exciting to watch someone put together a 228 run, or a 230 run in Reining. I just do not think there is anything like it, and it is so conducive to television! I think the future of Reining, and quite honestly all of the Performance Horse events is going to be as a spectator sport, that is aired on television.
A - Yeah, it is! It was the hardest lesson that I ever learned. It was not accepting NO, and the flip side of that coin is knowing when to say it yourself.
A - Yes, and they did! The first year of The Run for A Million took a lot of trust. When I started reaching out to the riders, the first one was an invitational because there was no other way to do it. They hung it out there, and then when they went to the event, then they all got it. And now, it is the premier event in Reining!
Q - Not listening to the word “No” - isn’t that very hard to do?
Q - Speaking to you today is an inspiration. Taylor, we have covered all of the questions, do you have anything that you wish to add?

The stars of ProRodeo converged when the 2022 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees led by Trevor Brazile, the King of PRCA cowboys with 26 world championships, were inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame on July 16. Brazile is joined in the star-studded 2022 induction class by four-time PRCA World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote (2002, 2007, 2009-2010), World Champion Team Roper Bobby Harris (1991), stock contractor the late Jake Beutler, rodeo clown Rick Young, four-time PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year Frontier Rodeo's Medicine Woman, rodeo notable Mel Potter, World Champion steer wrestler Roy Duvall's horse Whiskey and late World Champion barrel racer Ardith Bruce and WPRA notable Cindy Rosser. The rodeo committee from Nebraska's Big Rodeo in Burwell also was also put into the Hall.
The 2022 Ken Stemler Pioneer Award, which recognizes those who have provided groundbreaking, innovative ideas and forward thinking that help the development, advancement, and success of the PRCA and/or the Hall of Fame and their missions is being awarded posthumously to John Van Cronkhite, the first general manager of the National Finals Rodeo in 1959.Brazile, ProRodeo's only $7-million cowboy, has 26 gold buckles that include a PRCA-record 14 in all-around (2002-04, 2006-15, 2018), three in tie-down roping (2007, 2009-10) and one in team roping (2010) to go with the National Finals Steer Roping gold buckles in 2006-07, 2011, 2013-15 and 2019-20. "It takes a while to sink in in theory," Brazile said about his induction. "But it doesn't really hit you until you walk through these halls and see people who have been icons in the sport, who you don't hear about everyday but when you come through this Hall you realize what they have done and their contributions to the sport. Accolades are great, but to know you have contributed to make this sport better than you found it, that's probably the biggest compliment anybody could ever give you."Brazile also has won a PRCA record 74 career round wins at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – in tie-down roping and team roping – and steer roping.
2022 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Class Mote takes time to celebrate Mote, who retired in 2017 at the age of 41, qualified for 15 consecutive NFRs from 2001-2015 and was reserve world champion in 2001 and 2006. "It's a tremendous honor, there's no other way to put it," Mote said. "I've had a lot of time to think about it as I've been trying to work on my speech and think about what it means. In rodeo we are sort of conditioned to try to be as humble as possible because it doesn't matter what you've accomplished or who you are. Because every time you nod your head you can get a mouth full of dirt pretty easily. Rodeo has a way of humbling you. "The nice thing about this is like obviously I'm done riding bareback horses. I'm not concerned with whether I'm entered or if my last ride was good or not. It kind of doesn't matter anymore. It sort of brings a little closure to a cowboy's career and at the end of it it's an atta' boy from the rodeo world to say you did good and we recognize it. There's only been 21 bareback riders
Brazile has won 36 rounds at the NFSR, second only to Guy Allen's 48. "I would probably debunk all the laws of positive thinking because I had just hoped at some time, I would be fortunate to be to get a world championship, that would be awesome. To have multiple world championships and records is great. Records are made to be broken and I have no doubt someone is going to come along and break more records, but I will know if they break those records, they will get to hang out here one day at the Hall of Fame."
Most PRCA cowboys today don't compete in three events, but that's something Brazile took great pride in during his decorated career. "It just wasn't an option for me," Brazile said. "I didn't want to be specialized. There's nothing wrong with it, it just wasn't for me. I wanted to be known as a cowboy and not specialized in any one discipline. That was the way I went at it. Yeah, there were some ups and downs, but when you are standing here on a day like today it is well worth the sacrifices it took. "My grasp of reality knowing that there were guys who were more talented and more physically adapted to what we do was probably my biggest strength because it kept me working hard. It kept me refining my horsemanship because in everything I did, horses played such a big role in my success. We did that in a way that it made up for some of the shortcomings. My horses made me better than I thought I ever would be."
34 AUGUST 2022 TREVOR BRAZILE HEADS UP STAR-STUDDED 2022
PRORODEO HALL OF FAME CLASS
Potter is Hall-bound As for Potter, back in 1951, at the age of 16, he began his journey in the Rodeo Cowboys Association, now known as the PRCA. At his peak, back in 1959, Potter competed in the inaugural National Finals Rodeo in Dallas as a tie-down roper, finishing 14th in the final standings. As recently as 2010, he qualified for the RAM Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo as a team roper, and on July 17, 2013, Potter and partner Garrison Dixon won the Green County Fair ProRodeo in Monroe, Wis. Combine Potter's longevity
Harris humbled with Hall of Fame induction Harris qualified 18 times in team roping in 1981-82, 1984-95 and 1997, 1999, 2002, and 2010. He also qualified for the NFSR in 198691 and 1993, 2006. Harris, a team roping heeler, captured the 1991 team roping title while roping with fellow team roping Hall of Famer Tee Woolman."It'san honor when you're elected on other people's thoughts and stuff. It's really humbling to be included with the other Hall of Famers in ProRodeo," Harris said. "It means so much to me because the PRCA has been my whole life since I was little boy. I always wanted to be a cowboy. To be able to be included in this Hall of Fame is just really humbling and very honorable. "I can say for myself that this is something I never thought about. You're thinking about competition and trying to win a championship or whatever your goals are. The special thing about the Hall of Fame is it's looked at after you're done rodeoing. They look at your career and it means that they thought it was respectable and meant a lot to people. That's the big thing about it, that's what's so nice about it. This is the standard that the PRCA has put in place to be included in this group of people." Jake Beutler joins family in Hall Lynn Beutler of Elk City, Okla., was an integral part of professional rodeo for 40 years, becoming one of the sport's most widely known stock contractors in the family rodeo company known as Beutler Brothers. The company, started in 1929 with Lynn, Jake, and Elra Beutler, was recognized as one of the top stock contracting firms producing rodeos across the Southwest and Northwest. Jake passed away in March of 1975. He was 72. Now, Jake is a ProRodeo Hall of Fame member like family members Lynn, Elra, Jiggs, and Bennie. "Jake should've been in there when Lynn (Beulter) went in there, Lynn went in there in 1979. Jake is very deserving of it because he worked really hard. Our entire family is going to be there to celebrate his accomplishment, it'll be great," Bennie Beutler said. "This is something we are all really looking forward and it's an achievement that's long overdue." Rick Young soaks in Hall experience In 1974, Young was selected to work the NFR in Oklahoma City and in 1980 he was named PRCA's Clown of the Year. He was named Coors Man in the Can at the NFR in 1991, 1994 and 199697. "Everybody has been calling me, so I hope (it's set in). I tell you what I've never seen anything like it with the outpouring of support I've gotten for my induction," Young said. "It's really something and it's an experience that everyone should have the opportunity to experience because it really is something special. "All my friends are going to be there, that's what I'm looking forward to the most. Especially Mel Potter. I worked for Mel Potter for years at Rodeo Incorporated. He called me the other day and he said, 'I'm sure looking forward to seeing you.' It's amazing to be here and have my friends of a lifetime and family here as well. It's something I'll never forget I can tell you that."
Star horse Medicine Woman of Frontier Rodeo enters Hall Medicine Woman was the four-time PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year (2011, 2014-16) and the two-time saddle bronc horse of the National Finals Rodeo (2010 and 2015). She retired after competing at the 2020 Wrangler NFR at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. She passed away this past December at the age of 19.Only ProRodeo Hall of Famer Descent of Beutler Brothers and Cervi has won more saddle bronc horse of year honors than Medicine Woman. Descent won the honor six times from 196669, 1971-72. Medicine Woman was a ranch-raised mare out of Big Medicine (sire) & Showtime (dam). Frontier Rodeo has won PRCA's Stock Contractor of the Year seven years in row – 20152021."Idon't whether this has sunk in yet or not," said Frontier Rodeo's Jerry Nelson. "I know this is really special. To have one like (Medicine Woman) in the Hall of Fame is special and what makes it even more special to me is that we raised her. It isn't a horse we bought at a sale. Her mom and daddy were on the ranch, and she was born on the ranch, and it is just a special deal."

Medicine Woman was selected to the Wrangler NFR 12 times. Her first trip was in 2009 in the bareback riding, she made her debut in the saddle bronc riding in 2010 and never looked back. She was selected in saddle bronc riding from 2010-2020. Duvall thrilled Whiskey is entering HOF Duvall, who won world titles in 1967, 1969 and 1972 spent nine years riding Whiskey. "He was a great horse and the greatest horse that I ever owned. I owned some pretty darn good horses, and he was by far the best. He was part thoroughbred and tough as nails. We'd go to Houston and rodeos like that and probably 30 or 40 guys would make runs on him. That horse never did quit on me, and I hauled him for nine years."Itdidn't matter what the conditions were, he loved to compete. He ran in mud, sand, just about everything you could imagine. He was tough and never got hurt in nine years of competition. After those nine years of work, I thought he deserved retirement, so I just put him out to pasture. There's no doubt in my mind that Whiskey deserves a spot in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame for all he did for me and other cowboys."
35AUGUST 2022 that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. There's a lot of guys that are in the Hall that are truly great, so to be in the same Hall as those people it truly means something. I'm really grateful for this honor because there's a lot of great contestants that aren't in the hall. So, it's something I'll allow myself to celebrate."
Once entered, related program NRCHA Scoring provides premier event draws, scores and results throughout the event in real-time.
Entries in National Reined Cow Horse Association events across the country continue to rise, and the association’s premier events are no different. That influx of interest fueled the creation of a specialized online entry program to ease the burden of time entering and managing entries—NRCHA CowHorse+.
The scoring platform garnered the attention of Cindy Perez, owner of 2014 stallion The Animal (Cat Ichi x My Little Abra x Abrakadabracre), a National Cutting Horse Association Summer Spectacular Open Derby Champion as well as an NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Perez’s own interest in communications systems through her company, Cat5 Resources, peaked watching NRCHA Scoring assist in communicating information quickly and correctly to reined cow horse fans. Now, Perez backs the cow horse community as a Corporate Sponsor through NRCHA Scoring powered by The Animal.
Online entry to NRCHA premier events began with the 2022 Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions in January 2022 through NRCHA CowHorse+. The custom program offered NRCHA members a quick and efficient way to enter one or multiple horses in the show, and the information was easily integrated into the association’s scoring program.
Potter was humbled by his enshrinement "It's pretty darn nice, I don't really feel like I deserve it honestly," he said. "I won some big rodeos, but we had a great stock contractor firm that we put together. I was on the Board of Director for a while, and I think I kept them from blowing up, but that's about it. "I think learning to fly was what really helped my rodeo career. I could take care of business with the cranberries in Wisconsin in the morning and steer rope in the afternoon in Cheyenne (Wyo.). It allowed me to live two lives and rodeoing was a really big part of that. Those years rodeoing were the best and most fun times that I've ever had. I have a connection with a lot of these people that are going into the Hall of Fame with me. It'll be an honor to share a stage with them." Nebraska's Big Rodeo joins Hall The ofProRodeothewasRodeoNebraska'scommitteerodeofromBiginBurwellthrilledtojoinprestigiousHallFame.Despite a destructive windstorm that damaged its rodeo grounds on May 12, Nebraska's Big Rodeo is still scheduled to take place July 27-30. "I think us being inducted became more surreal this morning walking through the Hall of Fame and seeing our display. It kind of made it feel like you know this is really happening," said Jess Helgoth, President of Nebraska's Big Rodeo Board of Directors. "When I got the call, I had goosebumps and yes, tears in my eyes. Burwell has such pride in our 1,200-volunteer rodeo. The wind blew over the stands, but the white picket fence is still standing. "It's a great honor for the Board (Of Directors), past board members, and the community. Basically, anyone that's ever been involved in Burwell. It's just an honor to be inducted into something this big for our rodeo. We are maybe the second smallest rodeo that's been inducted into the Hall of Fame. For a town of from page 35 Hall of Fame
“We support the NRCHA because they are an organization that is continually trying to stay ahead of the curve, and NRCHA Scoring powered by The Animal is just another example of that,” Perez said. “Along with that, their extremely well-produced events draw people from every Western performance discipline and Western performance enthusiasts from all over the country! It is a great opportunity to capture the attention of such a diverse audience. Finally, we will always continue to support those who strive to support us!”

NRCHA Powered By XIT Ranch
“At the Stallion Stakes in 2021, NRCHA launched its first public interface for our real-time draws, scores and results system,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “We continued to improve the system as the 2021 show season progressed, and now the NRCHA Scoring platform provides a brand new way to look at NRCHA premier event entries, whether you’re interested in exploring by horse, rider, sire, dam, owner or breeder!”
“There was resounding positive feedback on the speed at which our members could enter this event, whether they did so on a laptop or on their phone,” said Emily Konkel, NRCHA premier event manager. “Paper forms have been the norm in our industry, creating a massive amount of manual data entry. With CowHorse+ the information is literally at our fingertips and in our systems in a click. Horses and riders are stored in the program, helping to eliminate minor spelling issues or other problems seen with the paper entry. It is revolutionizing our ability to manage entries, get them verified and them have the draws done and posted in NRCHAToday,Scoring.”NRCHA’s intuitive CowHorse+ is powered by a historic brand, XIT Ranch. The original ranch was founded in the Texas Panhandle in 1885 and spanned 3 million acres. Today, third great-grandson of XIT founder John V. Farwell, Drew Knowles, and his wife Abby raise the highest quality beef cattle and Quarter Horses in Southern Colorado near the original XIT’s ranchlands. It was a logical fit for the XIT to lend support to NRCHA as a Corporate Partner. “We believe in preserving ranching traditions and the Vaquero style of horsemanship. Supporting the NRCHA honors our family’s ranching legacy through the support of the next generation of riders, trainers, and equine athletes. It is an exciting time to be part of reined cow horse and we look forward to supporting the NRCHA for years to come.” as a competitor with his decade of success (1964-73) as a stock contractor with Rodeos Inc., and his time served on the PRCA Board of Directors and being selected as the 2015 Legend of ProRodeo, and it adds up to him going into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. "It's pretty neat, really a surprise for me. It was more my hobby than work or anything like that. "My dad asked me when I got out of college what I was going to do and I said, 'I'm going to rodeo and make a lot of money.' But after my first year he asked me again and that time I said, 'well I think I better go up there and learn to grow cranberries now.' That way I can afford my rodeo hobby."

The National Reining Horse Association Markel Futurity Sales have long been the place to find and purchase top reining prospects from reputable programs. Over the past 22 years, millions of dollars have changed hands, and countless horses have gone on to great success at major NRHA events. There is a long list of notable Sale graduates, including reigning NRHA Futurity Champion Ten Thirty, who was ridden to the title by NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider Casey Deary. Ten Thirty, Hip number 1030 in the 2019 Select Yearling Sale was consigned by Brooke Wharton and purchased by Cooper Smith for $44,000. The colt, by NRHA Seven Million Dollar Sire Gunnatrashya out of Dainty Little Step, was registered at the time as Gunna Go Rogue. When Rancho El Fortin purchased the colt, they renamed him to his hip number, Ten Thirty. This year’s NRHA Markel Futurity Sales will be held Thursday, December 1, in the Sale Arena of Oklahoma State Fair Park, continuing the one-day Sale arrangement that has been extremely popular with both consignors and buyers. According to Angie Honeywell, NRHA Senior Manager of ReinerSuite and Futurity Sales, there have been some exciting changes in the format for this year’s Sales. The Futurity Prospect Sale, which has only been open to two-year-olds, has been changed to a Performance Horse Sale that will include show horses of any age. “The Performance Horse Sale will have horses for every level of rider and will include prospects, futurity and derby horses, and ancillary horses,” Honeywell explained. “This is an exciting new addition to the Sales’ lineup because now there will be show horses available of all ages.”
The other change is in the Elite Yearling Sale. Traditionally, the dams of consigned horses had to have $25,000 or more in progeny and/or lifetime earnings in NRHA only. While the threshold remains $25,000, that money can now be earned from the National Reined Cow Horse Association and the National Cutting Horse Association as well. The NRHA Markel Futurity Sales Consignment Deadline is September 7, and consignments can be made online at NRHA. com/Sales

When Casey Deary and Americasnexttopgun won the Level 4 Open Championship at the 6666 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel, an incredible $75,000 was added to the lifetime earnings of both the horse and rider. That meant that Deary, already an NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider, was elevated to the fifth position on NRHA’s Leading Rider list. With lifetime earnings of $3,058,233, he is one of only six riders to have won more than three million. That money was won on 161 horses, bringing his average earnings per horse to Interestingly,$18,995.it was on Americasnexttopgun (Walla Walla Whiz x Americasnextgunmodel) that Deary surpassed two million dollars in lifetime earnings. That happened when Deary and the stallion, owned by Jody and Jolan Puno, won the 2020 Level 4 Open Championship at the National Reining Breeders Classic. Deary has won the most money on Ten Thirty (Gunnatrashya x Dainty Little Step), his 2021 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion. The stallion, owned by Rancho El Fortin, and Deary have generated payouts totaling $369,069. Deary’s fourth-leading earner, Shesouttayourleague (Walla Walla Whiz x Wimpys Little Chic), boasts $252,470 in lifetime earnings. In fact, it was Shesouttayourleague that gave Deary his first NRHA Futurity Open Championship, and that 2015 win was enough to make Deary a Million Dollar Rider for the first time. 48 AUGUST 2022 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Becomes NRHA Global Partner
In May, Clark’s Pump-N-Shop became the newest Global Partner for the National Reining Horse Association. As a Global Partner, Clark’s PumpN-Shop will directly support the NRHA European Futurity and Derby, the NRHA European Affiliate Championships, in addition to the North American events. The company, headquartered in Ashland, Kentucky, will also become the naming sponsor of the Open and Non Pro Novice Horse Derbies at this year’s 6666 Ranch NRHA Derby presented by Markel. Clark’s Pump-N-Shop, which operates nearly 70 stores in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Florida, was established in 1976 by John W. Clark. The convenience store chain is now coowned by John’s sons, Rick Clark and Brent Clark. Rick Clark is a familiar name to those in the reining horse industry. He is currently serving his second term as NRHA President and has been a member of the association for nearly three decades. He has been involved in all aspects of reining, as an owner, breeder, competitor, Board and Committee member for NRHA and the Reining Horse Foundation. He’s also served on the NRHA Sale Committee and as a leader in the Futurity“RickChallenge.hascontributed to NRHA on a variety of levels and has for so many years. A lot of that commitment has been behind-thescenes through the volunteering of his time, but this Global Partnership is a more visible representation of the support he’s given to reining over the years,” noted Gary Carpenter, NRHA Commissioner. Clark said, “I’ve been around the sport for over 25 years now and I love it – it’s my passion. My brother Brent is my business partner and he’s come to some events – even bought a cowboy hat and we now partner on some horses. The more we looked at it, Rick Clark, John W. Clark, and Brent Clark in 29th Street Marathon in Ashland,KY we knew becoming involved in a sponsorship capacity was a good idea.”Clark has long sponsored individual events across the country, so it was a natural way to extend his support of the industry. He said, “NRHA is not just about the big events – it’s all over – and when there is a reining in Kentucky, Ohio or Florida, I have felt like it was good to be involved. Reiners reciprocate by doing business with Clark’s Pump-NShop and we appreciate their support! Our hope is to keep promoting our sport along with our convenience store chain. Even after 12 hours of driving, even after the legs stiffen and the back aches, even after scant sleep, bull rider Josh Frost finds easy motivation.
"I have a strong reason to keep doing it every day -- that gold buckle at the NFR," Frost said. "There's been 10 years of hard work to get to this point. It's been a strong season, and I have built up some good momentum. But there's one goal in Frostmind."began his NFR experience refrigerator cold, failing to post a score in his first 12 rides, spanning 2019 and part of 2021. Then he got hot, and he hasn't stopped simmering since. Frost finished second in the PRCA | RAM World Standings last season, and he sits there again with a blistering run of performances. He continued writing his diary of success at the California Rodeo Salinas Big Week of Bull Riding. Frost won the twohead average with 167 points on Corey & Lange Rodeo's Shaved Ice and Flying U Rodeo's Wing and Barrell. He relished the environment. "It was cool. They had us right up there on the racetrack in front of the crowd," said Frost, who earned $10,959. "It was super exciting. In the long round, Shaved Ice, I knew that was a bull that could do anything. And he finished by blowing up in the air. And in the short round, that was a little bugger that I had seen five or six times. He got a little flat, but he made it through strong." Frost, 27, continues to draw from his last NFR experience. It drove home the importance of consistency and mental toughness. "You look at the top guys in the sport, like Stetson Wright and Sage Kimzey. I watched what they have done, and you see where they show the most growth and it's how to control the mind. I have read books on it and talked to coaches, done a little bit of everything," Frost said. "The key is the ability to do well day in and day out." Frost has won double figure events this season. He is riding a wave of excellence. But he's not about to take anything for granted. His eyes remain focused on looking through windshield and the prize in the distance. " You know the biggest part I appreciate is the challenge of it. It is a certain lifestyle out here with great friends. And it's important to remember how blessed we are to get to travel and do this," Frost said. "I love the grind of driving 12 hours and then working eight seconds. But there's one goal in mind, that top prize at the NFR."

Also making history, the contest between the Oklahoma Freedom and the Kansas City Outlaws ended in the league’s first tie, as neither five-rider roster was able to log a qualified ride.

As the inaugural season for the groundbreaking PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team Series got underway Monday evening in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the world’s best bull riders made history at the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, squaring off in the first of four games for the new sports league.
The evening was highlighted by a slugfest between the Nashville Stampede and Carolina Cowboys. In a game where 70% of the outs ended in qualified rides, veteran rider Ryan Dirteater delivered the game-winning score, emerging from retirement to give the Stampede its first regular-season victory.
The Missouri Thunder earned their position in the league’s record books, registering the first game win in the PBR Team Series, edging the Ariat Texas Rattlers by one ride score. The final game of the evening between the Arizona Ridge Riders and Austin Gamblers was also decided by one score, with the Ridge Riders collecting the victory to bring the evening to a climactic end.
buckoffs by Alisson De Souza (Taubate, Brazil) for the Ridge Riders and Conner Halverson (Gordon, Nebraska) for the Gamblers, it was Marco Eguchi (Poa, Brazil) who would deliver the go-ahead score for Arizona. Matched up with Surprise Package (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger), Eguchi reached the requisite 8 for 86.5 points. The Expo Square team members are professional and completely customer service oriented. We look forward to years of growth and success in Tulsa and to welcoming our exhibitors to this wonderful facility.” Cody added, “Along with support from Expo Square, the Tulsa Convention and Visitors Bureau have pledged monetary and auxiliary assistance to the NRBC.”
With the news of the venue change comes the announcement of new benefits and increases for exhibitors and owners. The NRBC Board has noted the first of several changes that will begin with the 2023 event, including a giant increase in added money for the Open Development Division (novice horse) plus the addition of the Non Pro Development division. The Open Development Division added money has tripled, increasing from $10,000 to $30,000 and the new Non Pro Development Division will debut with $20,000 added!
“Expo Square is excited that the NRBC Board of Directors has selected our facility to host their event,” said Brandi Herndon, Chief Agribusiness Officer of Expo Square. “We were fortunate to have the opportunity to do so in 2020 and look forward to working with the wonderful staff again. Expo Square is dedicated to positive and progressive movement for the success of all our equine partners and we look forward to NRBC being here through 2027.”
58 AUGUST 2022 NRBC Announces Move to Tulsa in 2023
Ashleigh Bachert, Interim Senior Vice President of Tulsa Regional Tourism, added, "Tulsa is thrilled to welcome such an incredible event to our community as it further adds to our focus on serving as a toptier equine destination. Between the Tulsa Convention and Visitors Bureau and Expo Square’s amazing team and facility, we are ready to put on an amazing event in 2023.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic firocoxib tablets for pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in horses. Firocoxib Tablets for Horses contain the same active ingredient (firocoxib) in the same concentration and dosage form as the approved brand name drug product, Equioxx Tablets, which was first approved on July 24, 2016. Firocoxib is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID). Like many NSAIDs, firocoxib works by affecting certain enzymes that trigger pain, fever, and inflammation. Although NSAIDs are effective medications for pain and inflammation, there are potential risks associated with their use. Firocoxib Tablets for Horses, like other veterinary NSAIDs, are only available by prescription because a veterinarian's expertise is required to determine if Firocoxib Tablets for Horses is an appropriate treatment and to monitor animal health while taking the drug. Veterinarians and animal owners should be aware of the potential risks associated with the use of NSAIDs. Serious side effects associated with NSAID therapy in horses can occur with or without warning. The most common side effects associated with firocoxib therapy involve the tongue, lips and skin of the mouth and face (erosions and ulcers of the mucosa and skin) and the kidney. Gastrointestinal, kidney and liver problems have also been reported with other NSAIDs. Veterinarians should provide the Firocoxib Tablets for Horses Client Information Sheet with each prescription and refill of the product. Firocoxib Tablets for Horses are available as half-scored tablets in 57 mg of firocoxib and are to be administered once daily for up to 14 days. The tablets are supplied in 60-count bottles.
“The Great Southwest Equestrian Center has been like home to us,” said NRBC President Tom McCutcheon. “We thank Jeff Hildebrand (GSEC owner), manager Amy Uniss, and the entire staff for being great partners, and we know this unique facility will continue to present exceptional events in the future.”
The Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, has been home to the National Reining Breeders Classic for more than two decades. In the past 22 years, the openair design and sheer beauty of the GSEC, combined with the multiple schooling areas and large competition arenas, helped make the NRBC the can’t-miss event it is today, drawing thousands of participants from around the world. The growth trend has always had an upwards trajectory, and because of that, the 2022 NRBC was bursting at the seams. The increased number of entries is precisely the reason that the NRBC Board of Directors made the difficult decision to move the event to Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., beginning next year. The 2023 event will maintain its springtime date and will be held April 16-23.
Cheryl Cody, Secretary-Treasurer of the NRBC, noted, “While it is difficult to move after so many years, the NRBC Board felt that the time had come and there was no better venue than Tulsa.
Expo Square in Tulsa was a logical choice for the move. In April of 2020, when the COVID-19 protocols caused the NRBC to be cancelled, it was ultimately held there 4 months later, creating a record-breaking event. As in 2020, the Ford Truck Arena will be the center-stage venue for the NRBC. There are multiple other competition and warmup arenas, which allowed the NRBC to become the first reining event in history to have four competition arenas running simultaneously in 2020.
Both the Open and Non Pro champion’s pay have been elevated as well. Beginning in 2023, the NRBC Open L4 Champion will receive $100,000 and the Non Pro L4 Champion will earnMore$50,000.news of exciting changes for riders and owners will be released soon. McCutcheon summarized, “I’m excited about the future of the NRBC going forward. The entire NRBC Board is looking forward to sharing more announcements of enhanced benefits for riders and owners soon as we move into this new era for the NRBC!”

BLM SEEKS PUBLIC
COMMENT ON PROPOSED WILD HORSE RESEARCH
The BLM has analyzed the potential impacts of the three proposed research projects in a draft environmental assessment (DOI-BLM-HQ2600-2022-0001-EA) as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. Instructions to access the draft analysis and to submit a comment can found by visiting the BLM’s ePlanning page. The deadline to submit comments is August 22, 2022.
The BLM identified the development of safe, effective, and long-lasting fertility control methods as a top research priority in its 2021 Wild Horse and Burro Strategic Research Plan. The three proposed projects were submitted to the BLM by two federal agencies, four universities, and other organizations in response to a solicitation seeking new research projects in November 2021.
60 AUGUST 2022 LATE STAR ACTOR JAMES CAAN WAS PRCA TEAM ROPING AND TIE-DOWN COMPETITOR
BY TRACY RENCK, PSN EDITOR
James Caan, the veteran screen actor known for his work in films such as Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather," "Misery" and "Elf," passed away on July 6. He was 82. "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6," the statement read. "The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time." They did not disclose a cause of death. What fans of Caan may not realize is he was a PRCA tie-down roper and team roper. Caan earned $2,404 in his PRCA career – all in teamCaanroping.loved sports and acknowledged in stories that he found competing in the PRCA a challenge. He became interested in roping when he was on location in Nebraska, filming the movie "The Rain People," which came out in 1969."Ididn't really know what I was doing in the beginning, but I'm really a good mimic," Caan was quoted saying in the 1983 Official ProRodeo Media Guide. "I worked hard at my roping and learned it." Caan added that he thoroughly enjoyed competing with PRCA cowboys. "Being around the people," Caan said in a newspaper
Caan first found fame playing Chicago Bears halfback Brian Piccolo in "Brian's Song," a widely seen 1971 TV movie. The tear-jerking film chronicled Piccolo's real-life battle with terminal cancer and drew praise for its treatment of the interracial friendship between Piccolo and his African-American teammate, Gale Sayers. effectiveness of vaccines for preventing pregnancies in wild horse mares: one would build upon previous research to develop a longterm one-dose vaccine, and a second project would test a fertility control vaccine that has some preliminary studies in horses and other animals. The third proposed research project would test specialized intrauterine devices (IUDs) in a wild horse herd management area on public lands. All the proposed projects would be required to follow BLM’s animal welfare policies when handling wild horses. Also, researchers would follow guidelines set by their respective Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees.
The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comments for three new proposed research projects focused on developing better, longer-lasting fertility control methods for managing and protecting wild horse herds on public lands.“Developing humane, safe, effective and long-lasting fertility control methods for wild horses is a top priority for the BLM,” said Dr. David Jenkins, BLM Assistant Director for Resources and Planning. “I encourage all interested members of the public to review this preliminary environmental assessment and submit comments about these proposedAbsentprojects.”intervention, wild horse herds typically grow very quickly – doubling in size every four years. There were approximately 82,000 wild horses and burros roaming public lands as of March 2022, which is more than three times the appropriate herd size. An overpopulation of wild horses can degrade important ecosystems and lead to starvation and/or dehydration. Existing fertility control methods are short-lasting and require multiple doses, which limit their effectiveness as a management tool. Longer-lasting fertility control methods would be potent tools to better control herd growth and protect animal and land health. Two of the proposed research projects would quantify the article. "I like the way they treat me. It was hard to win their acceptance and respect. At first, they figured here comes this Hollywood actor wantin' to play cowboys. I had to win to be accepted. After you win a few times, they treat you like just another guy out there competing and who can beat them sometimes. You can just be yourself. I don't know what it is. It is partly being able to act out a kid's fantasy. But I like being around them. It cleanses my brain." In 1980, Caan, a heeler, competing with 1974 PRCA Team Roping World Champion H.P. Evetts won money at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver with a 7.3-second run. "I think the reason the cowboys accept me is because I'm at a rodeo to win," Caan said in Jan. 14, 1980, PRCA press release. "I'm not some Hollywood guy who acts like a professional roper, I am one. As a matter of fact, my rodeo accomplishments mean more to me than my Oscar nomination for the "Godfather." There's something about rodeo dirt that makes me feel clean – it gets me away from the fakery of Hollywood, and back to the basics."

This week, the Board of Supervisors scheduled a public hearing to hear comments and consider a petition to establish the Rio Verde Foothills Domestic Water Improvement District (DWID). "I look forward to August when we finally address this issue at the Board level.
Rio Verde is an unincorporated community in Maricopa County that has seen a lot of growth, but property owners get water in different ways. Some residents have wells or private water companies, while hundreds are paying for water to be hauled from Scottsdale. Due to the drought, Scottsdale officials decided to stop supplying water haulers to Rio Verde at the end of 2022.Maricopa County does not have water rights or regulate water. The issue before the Board of Supervisors has been the request for the DWID from one group of residents. Those with wells and other water sources have openly worried about adding this level of local government in the community.

100 AUGUST 2022 Brad Elrod President / Owner 480-595-7528 office 480-595-7529 fax elrodfenceaz@hotmail.com ROC # 103548 Fencing Arizona for Over 50 Years! STETSON WRIGHT REPEATS AS CHEYENNE CHAMPION
"That horse was really good, I knew I needed to get a good strong mark out on her to setup the whole ride," said Wright, a fivetime PRCA World Champion. "She kind of jumped down the gate, which made me question whether she was going to hit my leg or not. I was able to hold through it and luckily everything went well. Then once she started setting up it just felt amazing."
By TANNER BARTH, PRCA Media Coordinator Stetson Wright has proved over his five-year ProRodeo career that he's never been afraid of the big moment, and he proved that once again in front of a sellout crowd in Cheyenne, Wyo., July 31. Looking to defend his saddle bronc riding title from a year ago, Wright matched up with Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics' Pendleton Roundup's Marquee and made it count. The duo put together an 88-point trip to capture the coveted Cheyenne Frontier Days title, a key stop on the NFR Playoff Series presented by Pendleton Whisky.
It's been nearly a month since Wright was forced to miss the Cowboy Christmas run with a wrist injury that required surgery. He admits there has been mental hurdles to get over, but he feels like he's back in a good position with nine weeks left to go in the regular season. "There are definitely no excuses when you're out here rodeoing," he said. "If you show up no one wants to hear you cry I feel like I'm back. I finally got all my doubt to myself out of the way. This is a really good way to cap off the week here in Cheyenne."Intotal,Wright walked out of Cheyenne with $12,198 added to his name. He currently sits No.1 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in bull riding and third in saddle bronc. He said while this win is an important confidence boost, he knows there's still a lot of rodeoing left. "I try not to overthink anything when I'm doing good or I'm doing bad. The only thing that runs through my head is I'm healthy, wealthy, handsome, and happy," Wright said. It's been the same for years and that's how I look at it. "I think it helps me some that I don't ride the highs or the lows. I just try to stay even keel. As excited as I want to be right now, I'm trying to keep it calm, cool, and collected. There's nine weeks left, so it's far from over. I'm just going to keep chipping away at it."

HempMy Pet and Tarleton University reported that higher doses of CBD (0.6mg/kg of body weight) are more effective overall compared to lower doses of CBD (0.3mg/kg of body weight). In both dosages, CBD was non-detectable after 24 hours with the highest blood concentration levels peaking at 4 hours after it was administered.According to the study, there was no difference observed in the effects of CBD in male and female horses, but there was an increase in feed eating times in both the low and higher CBD dosages. The higher dosage was seen to have a much longer feed time compared to the lower dosage. Research showed there was a decrease in cortisol levels in the transportation portion of the study and that there were not any long-lasting effects of the CBD in both the low and high dosages.1Kimberly Guay, PhD, PAS, Tarleton University stated in the release, "My research goals are to perform as many projects as necessary to better understand the physiological and behavioral responses of animals when they consume CBD and Hemp processing byproducts such as hempseed meal. It is important to recognize the differences in these products so that we can categorize and utilize them in safe and useful ways. There is still much to be done, and we will continue to fill in the blanks that remain regarding these products in our animals.” The stress from transportation can sometimes affect a horse’s behavior including weight gain, feed efficiency, and excessive aggression.NatalieMondine, HempMy Pet co-founder and COO, said in the release, "This is our second clinical trial study overall, but it is the first study we have done with horses, and we are very pleased with the results. Being approached by Tarleton University to collaborate on a study was very exciting for us, as it shows that the interest in the therapeutic benefits of hemp are valid and have a real future in medicine."
"If we look at the science and data behind all of the research that has been done so far, it's impossible to ignore that CBD and hemp derivatives have an overwhelmingly positive effect on a myriad of health concerns and are a real alternative to pharmaceuticals."

Tim O'Connell admitted he "feels good" and that's bad news for the competition. O'Connell rode his way to three consecutive PRCA world championships from 2016-18, but tough luck and a nasty injury interrupted his run the past two seasons. His recent activities suggest O'Connell could return to the top of the sport in the crown jewel event. He has hit his stride in the past four rodeos. He split third at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede and the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo, took fourth at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, and won the World's Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz. The latter holds particular significance because of the stock. O'Connell rode Boom Boom Girl for the first time in Prescott, a stop on the NFR Playoff Series presented by Pendleton Whisky, though he had some inside intel. His brother Will O'Connell, a former bullfighter, saddle bronc rider and pickup man, provided the horse from Championship Pro Rodeo. "He said he was going to be good. He sent me a couple of videos and he looked really nice," O'Connell said before flying off to his next event. "He really put the trip together." Competing for the first time in a week, O'Connell produced an 87.5-point score, netting a purse of $6,556.

AQHA Past President Marten Clark of Pebble Beach, California, died July 28, 2022. He was Marten93.was born and raised near Soledad, California, and grew up in the farming, produce and beef and dairy cattle industries. While attending California State Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo, he became involved in the horse industry, and bought his first Quarter Horse while he was still in college. After Marten graduated from Cal Poly, he returned to his family’s farming business, but he also became even more involved in the horse business. He often said that the beginning of his success in the industry was with a mare that he raised called Nevada Starlet. By Nevada King out of a daughter of Waggoner’s Rainy Day, he bred Nevada Starlet to such horses as Poco Tivio, Doc Bar and Par Three. Among her produce were three AQHA Superior halter horses as well as a number of other horses who earned points in halter and performance events. Marten always said that his mentor in those early days was Charley Araujo, who owned Poco Tivio.

A well-known figure in the cutting community, Brenda Binion Michael, 81, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away July 27, 2022.Brenda was the third of Benny and Teddy Jane Binion’s five children. Born in Dallas and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, she spent many summers at the Binion ranch in Jordan, Montana. As a child, she got her first taste of cutting on a retired NCHA World Champion owned by her father who’d three-peated the title in 1946 - 47- 48. Like so many others, she was hooked. Brenda attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth to be near the heart of the cutting horse industry. She helped her family full-time in Montana before buying a ranch near Santa Rosa, New Mexico. She moved to Amarillo in 1969 and continued her ranching interests. When she was 17, her father assigned her the job of registering all the eligible horses on his Montana ranch with the American Quarter Horse Association. The job was more challenging than it might sound. “Daddy always ran at least 200 mares, so we had 10 to 15 stallions all the time,” she told John L. Moore for an article in America’s Horse magazine.TheBinion ranch stretched over 95,000 deeded acres in the badlands of eastern Montana,
